Mighty 5 From Salt Lake City

It was the perfect itinerary. Our guide paid attention to the weather and to the participants and was able to make modifications as needed. He was also an amazing source of information and kept us informed and entertained throughout our travel time and on our hikes. Information about everything from geology to geography, from current politics to early settlers, Native American information and local flora. An excellent tour

Mighty 5 From Las Vegas Tour

Mighty 5 From Las Vegas

If you're looking for a reason to visit the American West, Southwest Adventure Tours' Utah Mighty 5 tour is it. The scenery in each of the five parks is incredible beyond description, and the whole trip is just super well-run - from the sights to the amenities, everything was wonderful. One of the best parts of all was our guide, Simone Kuzma, who was just a wealth of fascinating information about the landscape and a ton of fun to boot. The effort she put into making the tour a success was evident at every turn. I highly recommend this trip, and you'll be extra lucky if you get Simone.

Utah Parks Circuit Tour

Utah Parks Circuit

We did this trip during the government strike in 2013 which meant all the National Parks were closed. Intrepid did a WONDERFUL job mitigating the situation and we still got to go camping and hiking at some select state parks. Luckily, the Grand Canyon was re-opened before our trip ended which was awesome. What a finale! Thank You Intrepid for giving us an awesome itinerary despite the challenges.

Zion Glamping Adventure Tour

Zion Glamping Adventure

An absolutely incredible, picturesque trip, and our second experience with Intrepid. We explored Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, and the amazing Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon. Our amazing tour leader Kriss Urban was a book of knowledge and a great storyteller! This Utah trip is a MUST for outdoor lovers.

Zion and Bryce Lodge Based Tour Tour

Zion and Bryce Lodge Based Tour

THis was my first trip with Wildland Trekking and I had no idea how challenging the terrain and hikes would be. As it turned out, everything was well within the ability of the five of us in the group. Our guide prepared us each evening for the day ahead so that we could anticipate with pleasure what lay ahead. When the going got tough, Craig encouraged and distracted us! He also prepared delectable lunches on the trail that fueled us for the rest of the day. Craig is a seasoned guide....well informed about flora, fauna, and the geology of the area' and excellent company in general. All in our group were ready to sign up for another lodge based trip after this excellent experience with Wildland Trekking. I was also very impressed with the attention to safety and other details such as good meals and nice accommodations.

Reviews of utah tours.

Excellent trip small group tour, great hotels and guide.
Excellent tour. Our guide Robin, was very informative and had an entertaining flair. We went to a series of awe-inspiring viewpoints and did some wonderful hikes in what were referred to as “the mighty five” of Utah. An unforgettable trip with a terrific group of people and a very knowledgeable, gregarious guide.
the best way to explore the vastness and glory of the Utah desert is by camping and hiking in small groups. I enjoyed this trip immensely, it was challenging enough but not too much. Our guide was a brave and resourceful powerful woman. I am planning my next trip with you already!

Depart Salt Lake City for Canyonlands National Park & Dead Horse Point State Park

private tours of utah national parks

We’ll pick you up in Salt Lake City and begin our drive through the Wasatch mountains toward the incredible canyons of Southern Utah.  The first National Park on the docket is Canyonlands. This remote and intriguing wilderness hosts high plateaus, buttes, and mesas carved out by life-giving rivers that now lie far below. We’ll witness it all in the district known as “Island in the Sky” where we’ll hike to outstanding viewpoints.

Next we’ll stop at Dead Horse Point State Park for an incredible overlook of the mighty Colorado River.  This unique landscape has been featured in many movies and television shows such as “Thelma & Louise” and HBO’s recent series “Westworld”.

This evening we’ll arrive at our lodge in Moab and enjoy a group dinner.

Driving Time:  4 Hours Hiking:  3+ miles | Minimal elevation gain Accommodation: Hilton Moab, Red Cliffs Inn, or similar in Moab, Utah

Hiking in Arches National Park – Afternoon in Moab

private tours of utah national parks

After a fresh breakfast included at your lodge, get ready to explore the largest concentration of natural sandstone arches in the world. Arches National Park is home to over 2,000 of these formations which have been sculpted from the rock by the erosive forces of wind and water. We’ll see the Windows, Double Arch, and take a 3-mile round-trip trek to the infamous Delicate Arch.

“A weird, lovely, fantastic object out of nature like Delicate Arch has the curious ability to remind us—like rock and sunlight and wind and wilderness—that out there is a different world, older and greater and deeper by far than ours” – Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire

We’ll stop at the visitor center in Arches before heading to Moab where you’ll have an opportunity to wander around this unique Southwest town for a couple of hours. We’ll then head back to the lodge to relax for the rest of the night.

Driving Time: Local Hiking:  3-5 miles | 700+ feet elevation gain Accommodation: Hilton Moab, Red Cliffs Inn, or similar in Moab, Utah

Explore Goblin Valley & Capitol Reef National Park

private tours of utah national parks

This morning we have a 2 hour drive to the “alien-like” landscape of Goblin Valley State Park. This playground of rock is a guest favorite with it’s unique hoodoos—known locally as goblins—that are scattered over a former tidal plain. We’ll continue the scenic drive toward Capitol Reef National Park, named for white sandstone domes and rocky cliffs that form a barrier along a wrinkle in the surface of the Earth.

Capitol Reef National Park includes 241,904 acres of amazing red rock formations, cliffs, canyons and natural bridges. Due to the remote location, its the least visited of Utah’s National Parks, making it a rare treasure! This evening we’ll arrive to our lodge just outside of Capitol Reef National Park.

Driving Time: 3.5 Hours Hiking:  2-3 miles | 400+ feet elevation gain Accommodation: Red Sands Hotel or similar near Torrey, Utah

Witness the Hoodoos of Bryce Canyon & hike Queen’s Garden/Navajo Loop

private tours of utah national parks

This morning after breakfast we’ll depart for Bryce Canyon National Park. Stand on the rim overlooking the Bryce Amphitheater and watch the sun slowly rise over sandstone spires, painting them orange. We’ll then venture into the basin getting up close to the otherworldly hoodoos on “The world’s best 3-mile hike”.  This trail is rated as moderate and is a wonderful way to view a variety of geology, flora, & fauna.

Later in the day we’ll head to our lodge just outside of Zion National Park. You’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the property before we have an incredible dinner at one of our local favorite restaurants.

Driving Time: 3 Hours Hiking:  3-4 miles | 600+ feet elevation gain Accommodation: Driftwood Lodge or similar

Towering Sandstone Cliffs & Virgin River Oasis of Zion National Park – Return to Salt Lake City

private tours of utah national parks

Today we explore our 5 th  National Park in 5 days, Zion National Park! Known as “Mukuntuweap” by the Southern Paiute, red cliff walls tower 2000 feet above the lush canyon floor as the Virgin River winds peacefully through. Having once carved out the surrounding landscape, the river now nourishes serene cottonwood groves and golden meadows where deer and turkey forage.

After several hours of optional hiking and exploring, we depart from Zion National Park and begin our return 4.5-hour drive to Salt Lake City.

*Due to weather variability, we refer to the conditions provided by Mother Nature when deciding which hike will be preferred. Potential activities include: Upper Emerald Pools, Observation Point, The Narrows or similar.

Driving Time: 5 Hours Hiking:  3-6 miles | Minimal elevation gain

The Mighty 5 Tour of Utah

5 Utah National Parks in 5 Days

OVERVIEW The Mighty Five is fast becoming one of our most popular tours.  Five of the countries most beautiful national parks all located in a small geographical area.  And yet each one is so different from its neighbors.  Born of the Colorado plateau uplift these parks offer some of the unique landscape and rock formations you will find anywhere in the world.  In addition to the National Parks, we also visit two of our states most beautiful and unusual parks.

Areas Visited: Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Capitol Reef NP, Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument, Goblin Valley State Park, Deadhorse Point State Park, and Salt Lake Cities Mormon Temple Square (Temple Square has more visitors every year than most of the national parks in Utah, combined).

Generally, our groups are small with eight to ten passengers.  We use a comfortable modified van for larger groups and a suburban or similar for groups of 4 or less.

We begin the tour in Las Vegas and end in Salt Lake City. Our guides are the best in the area. They usually are natives of Southern Utah and have a lifetime of stories and insights to draw upon.  There is no substitute for experience. They provide a comprehensive overview of the history, geology, plant life, and culture of the West.

We look forward to touring with you,

The SUST staff, experienced tour specialists

Arrival Day: Las Vegas, and  St George. (The day before your tour begins)

After you arrive in Las Vegas and collect your luggage you will connect with a shuttle which will then transport you to St George, UT for your overnight stay.  Get settled in, enjoy the beauty of the city of St George. We will be getting started first thing in the morning. There will be two shuttle departures times, one at 12 pm PST and the second at 4:00 pm PM PST

Day One: Zion National Park

private tours of utah national parks

Zion – Virgin River

We begin our Mighty 5 tour with first thing in the morning from your hotel in St George UT. Our immediate destination is Zion National Park, a short, 50 min drive away.

Zion National Park is one of nature’s greatest wonders. Gigantic red and white rock monoliths tower around you like a skyscraper city of stone, concealing pockets of abundant flora and fauna. See the Great White Throne, Angel’s Landing, the Court of the Patriarchs, and the Narrows where the Virgin River has carved out a narrow canyon with 2,000-foot cliffs on each side.

There are some great trails to walk, from easy to moderate as we explore some of the key sites in Utah’s most visited national park.

After we are done we make our way to Bryce, UT for our night stay.

(Breakfast And Dinner Included)

Day Two: Bryce Canyon National Park

Sunrise in Bryce is a magical experience. A few minutes before sunrise we will make our way to one of the  most beautiful locations in the park to enjoy the sun break the horizon and light the beautiful landscape of Bryce Canyon.

There is no other place on earth like Bryce Canyon. Made famous for its pink and white uniquely shaped hoodoos, Bryce Canyon is a great place to experience. There are a couple of hiking/walking options to enjoy as well as fantastic viewpoints to discover.

private tours of utah national parks

Bryce Canyon Ampitheater

Later that afternoon, we drive over famous Highway 12, truly one of America’s most scenic highways, and into parts of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. No other place in the lower 48 is as remote and undiscovered as in this part of Utah. See why “Car and Driver” magazine and others have called Highway 12 one of America’s most beautiful drives.

Lodging and dinner will be in Torrey, Utah.

(Breakfast Included)

Day Three: Capitol Reef National Park

private tours of utah national parks

Capitol Reef – Barn

Capitol Reef is Utah’s least-visited national park so don’t expect large crowds of people.   We have a morning scenic drive in Capitol Reef’s Water Pocket fold.   We visit an ancient Petroglyph panel.  In the fall, seasonal fruit can be picked in the old pioneer orchards, and small pies and ice cream are available in the nearby Gifford House Museum year-round.

In the afternoon, we head for Utah’s most unusual State Park, Goblin Valley. The rock formations here are unique and do have an unearthly and strange look about them. Then, we drive to the John Wesley Powell History Museum in Green River, Utah. John W. Powell had a significant influence on this part of Utah. He and his group were the first to successfully float down the Green and then the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869. Powell named a number of the rivers and mountain ranges found in the area.

Lodging will be in Moab, Utah, that evening.

Day 4: Arches and Canyonland National Parks

We travel to nearby Arches National Park.  Here your guide will help you to explore some of the most amazing sites in the world.

Mighty 5 Tour in Utah

Turret Arch Through An Arch

The arches of the park are true wonders beyond comparison and will leave you awed and amazed that these stone structures are still standing.  We will take a walk up to the famous Landscape Arch, one of the longest spans of any arch in the world. Additional sites visited include the Windows Section where more than 9 arches are laid out for your view, Balanced Rock, Park Avenue, and the Delicate Arch viewpoint.

After we have finished in Arches we will give you some time to see Moab UT or if the group chooses to see some more of the local sites.

That evening we will have our farewell dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Lodging will again be in Moab, UT.

(Breakfast, Dinner Included)

Day 5: Deadhorse Point, Canyonlands National Park, Prehistoric Museum, and Salt Lake City

private tours of utah national parks

Deadhorse Point

After breakfast, we travel to the Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park and visit a few of the key sites including a walk to Mesa Arch and a stop at Grand Viewpoint. We also visit one of Utah’s most beautiful State Parks, Dead Horse Point. Here, a fantastic view of the canyons of the Colorado River is offered from a towering mesa, hundreds of feet above the canyon.

We begin our journey to Salt lake city making a stop in Green River for lunch, followed by a stop in Price Utah at USU’s Eastern Prehistoric Museum, where we will visit some informative dinosaur and Fremont Indian exhibits. From there, we go directly to Salt Lake City for our final night stay.

Overnight Salt Lake City

Day 6: Depart Salt Lake International Airport

Make your way to the Salt Lake City Airport for your departures home.  The Hotel offers a convenient airport shuttle throughout the day.

Open Sky Zion

This Eco-Tourism Destination Takes Glamping to Ultra-Luxe Levels

  • Visit our facebook
  • Visit our pinterest

Cruising on state Route 9, it’s easy to spot the canvas roofs and Conestoga wagons at several other glamping resorts near Zion National Park. But you won’t even catch a glimpse of Open Sky Zion. To say this glamping resort is secluded is an understatement.

Open Sky Zion sits on 80 acres located 4(ish) miles off state Route 9, up the unpaved Dalton Wash Road. Most people fly right by the turnoff without even realizing there’s a road there. And those folks don’t need to know everything we’re about to tell you, our dear Utah.com-rades. But now that you’re in the know, you’re in for a “treat yo’self” kinda getaway where you’ll reconnect with nature, as well as your favorite outdoorsy companion(s).

Off the Radar and Off the Grid

Once you reach Open Sky’s gates, BAM! You are hit with a jaw-dropping view of the Star Seeker Superior II luxury camp, situated high on the cliff surrounded by red rocks and juniper pines.

What you probably won’t see is the resort’s solar farm strategically concealed in a ravine away from the road. Open Sky Zion boasts one of the largest microgrids in Utah, and it powers the entire place. You won’t see many of the other sustainable initiatives in use, either.

This eco-tourism destination has its own water treatment and septic distribution systems. Generator usage is automated to minimize fuel consumption without sacrificing any of the comforts you’d expect at a luxury resort. Indoor gas fireplaces and heated bathroom floors for winter stays? Yep. Air conditioning and ceiling fans for the hot summer days in the desert? Of course.

Outdoor lighting is also designed in a way that doesn’t pollute the dark sky at night, and guests are provided with rechargeable orbs that glow just enough to safely walk around the property after dark. Yeah, these folks give a hoot. I’m sure Woodsy Owl (remember him?) is proud. This is responsible travel at its finest.

If You Build Around It, They Will Come

The four owners of Open Sky Zion did not want to change nature. They drew upon their construction background, sourced sturdy safari-style tents from Africa, and intentionally built the camps around nature. They started with three accommodations when they opened in 2021, solicited feedback from guests to make the lodging even boujier than before, and then added seven more tents in 2022. Another three luxury camps were built in early 2023.

Each of the 13 camps has a different patio or deck based on the terrain. And it’s not uncommon to see geological features incredibly close to the tent windows. There’s barely enough room to slide a sheet of paper between the side window showcasing the surrounding trees and cliffs in the sky lounge of a Star Seeker Luxury Camp . There is also a glass ceiling above the king-sized bed, so you can gaze up at the brilliant stars in the dark sky as you drift off to dreamland.

The outdoor showers are built around nature as well. Some have the face of a cliff acting as a wall on one side and a rustic panel providing privacy on another side. But there is so much space between tents that sometimes the extra panel isn’t even needed. Truly au naturale.

Seclusion doesn’t just speak to the location of the resort as a whole, but also the placement of each tent. You’ll feel miles away from everyone and everything. No wonder responsible travelers from all around the globe stay here.

The Sound of Silence

The mornings are magical at Open Sky Zion. All is calm. All is quiet. You might hear a chipmunk scurrying about as the sky changes from static gray to cotton-candy pink and pale purple, but that’s about it. And here’s a fun scientific fact: Coffee tastes better when consumed in these conditions. I tested the hypothesis and it’s true — especially if you’re sitting in one of the tear-drop-shaped hanging lounge chairs outside.

The a.m. conditions are also perfect for a private yoga sesh, and mats are provided in each tent. I had a pose-off with a beautiful blue Aphelocoma scrub jay that was perched in a tree directly in front of me. It outlasted my balance pose, but no worries. I still started the day strong after my final resting pose.

Ready for Recreation

Glamping at Open Sky Zion is equal parts relaxation and recreation. The mesa-top Guacamole MTB Trail is less than a mile up Dalton Wash Road from Open Sky Zion. The resort has a few bikes available to borrow, or you can bring your own. Intermediate and advanced riding options, combined with spectacular views of Zion

National Park, make this a world-renowned trail. No exaggeration. On a Monday afternoon, there were a couple of cars at the trailhead with California plates and another from Maine. A father and his teenage son from Australia were riding it soooo steezy, along with their friend from St. Geezy (that’s local slang for St. George, Utah).

Of course, you have to spend a day or two in Zion National Park while staying here. Emerald Pools has options for hikers of varying abilities. If you’re up for some advanced canyoneering, hike to Middle Emerald Pools then head over to Jacob Canyon. During the warmer months, The Narrows is a welcome wade through a shaded slot canyon. It can also be done during cooler months with the right gear.

There are also several miles of hiking trails being developed on Open Sky Zion’s expansive acreage. Scrambling is necessary in a few places, and sure-footedness is a must. Or skip the trail and try your hand at cornhole by the picturesque pond on the resort’s property instead.

Your multiday itinerary might also include a scenic helicopter ride or the Above Zion Via Ferrata tour. If heights ain’t your thang, there are plenty of other experiences to choose from in the area. Maybe a Jeep ride and tour of Grafton Ghost Town is more your speed. Ready for another fun fact? Grafton has been a filming location for several movies, including “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”

A Culinary Adventure

When in Rome, eat pasta and drink wine. When in the Utah desert, drink prickly pear limeade and order the local squash fritters as an appetizer. Trust me, these menu items are musts at Open Sky’s onsite restaurant, Black Sage . There are also several mouth-watering entree options for vegetarians, pescatarians and full-on carnivores. Mineral springs smoked meatloaf, anyone? Yes, please! (Seriously … I want some. Right. Now.)

The owners’ eco-tourism ethos is also reflected in the menu offerings. Some ingredients are grown in a garden onsite; others are sourced from local farmers. So naturally, the menu changes seasonally.

And even though you aren’t in Italy, you can still drink wine at Open Sky Zion. Order a bottle that pairs well with your dinner selection, or take one back to your camp for a romantic rendezvous.

Treat Yo’Self to a Stay

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone anniversary with that special someone, a solo traveler seeking serenity or a group of lifelong friends planning a glamping getaway just because, Open Sky Zion will leave you satiated in every way.

There are so many great things to do in Utah so the longer you can make your trip the better!

We’ll begin the ultimate Utah road trip in Moab. This is a great recreation area where you can do all the outdoor adventure you could possibly ask for as well as being a great home base to visit 2 of the Big Five Utah National Parks: Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park . There are more things to do in Moab than you would have time for! Here are our recommendations on things to do when you visit Moab.

Things To Do

We had no idea how much we were going to love this! There are some awesome jeep trails throughout Moab – we really enjoyed the Fins and Things trail or you can check Hells Revenge trail!

The nice thing is you can rent a jeep from one of the many rentals in Moab and head out on your own. Or if you aren’t sure what you are doing you can get a guide too. We highly recommend that if this is your first time!

Rent An OHV

Moab is essentially an oasis in the middle of the desert. The scenery is gorgeous and could be a destination just to take amazing scenic drives. You can also drive right in the scenery by renting an OHV or dirt bike at one of the many rental places on the main road in Moab. Check out these two 4×4 Driving Tours: Arches National Park or Canyonlands National Park

The OHV’s (Off Highway Vehicles) can also be driven on the streets of Moab as long as you follow some local laws.

Mountain Biking

If biking is more your thing, bring your own, or again you can borrow from one of the many Moab bike rentals along main road. There are some of the best bike trails in the entire country in Moab and have different levels of difficulty for all abilities. Definitely a great spot to bike.

Take a half day mountain bike tour!

Rock Climbing

Moab also offers rock climbing. You’re free to do it on your own, or hook up with one of the many guide companies in the area.

You can even climb inside Arches National Park as long as you pay attention to the rocks you are climbing. For the details on that check out https://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/rockclimbing.htm .

Take a rock climbing trip in Moab!

As for rafting in Moab, the Colorado River offers pretty much all you could ask for. From slow river floats to Class IV rapids, you’ll see it all. You can choose from half day or full day rafting options leaving from Moab.

You can also kayak and SUP the river.

Helicopter Tour

If you want to see more remote areas and amazing rock formations, you may want to check out this Arches Backcountry Helicopter Flight . This tour is a 20-30 minute flight that departs from Canyon fields Airport. Talk about breathtaking views!

Sound and Light Show with Dinner

For a more relaxed evening activity, check out the Sound and Light Show with Dinner . Enjoy a calm ride down the Colorado River while watching an amazing show that details the canyon’s creation. Don’t miss this unique experience!

Corona Arch

Another great hike in Moab is Corona Arch. This is about a mile and a half roundtrip that includes ladders and some steep rock scrambles. You’ll end up under Corona Arch which is just amazing.

Highway 128 Scenic Drive

Another great thing to do in Moab is to take the scenic drive on Highway 128. Your drive time can range from a few minutes to a few hours on this beautiful road. We stopped a few times where the road was near the Colorado River to check it out and toss some stones in the river.

Dead Horse Point State Park

Even though the name doesn’t make you think happy thoughts this is a gorgeous state park and worth checking out for sunset.

Arches National Park

Arches National Park is just a few miles north of Moab. Being one of the Big 5 National Parks, it’s a must-visit when in Moab. We really liked the park for the hiking trails as well as climbing near the arches and the beautiful red rocks.

It’s also incredibly busy and now requires a timed entry ticket to get in from April to October. If you want to maximize your time in the park, we have the perfect itinerary guide for you. It will show you a 1 day itinerary for Arches and a few bonus day activities.

There’s a single road that goes through the park that is 18 miles long, so you could see the whole thing in a day if that is all you had. I’d recommend giving yourself 2 or 3 days to see more of the park and to do some hiking while there.

Best Hikes in Arches National Park

Delicate arch.

There are several hikes that we really enjoyed in Arches. The most iconic being Delicate Arch. This hike is about 3 miles roundtrip and felt like it was uphill the whole way. It culminates at Delicate Arch which is just an amazing structure.

You can get right under the Arch for a great picture even though you’ll be the size of an ant in the picture. This is a must-do on the Utah road trip.

Another fun hike is the Windows section. It’s really a short hike that gets you up close and personal with several fantastic arches. We were able to do some climbing and rock scrambling here, which the kids loved.

Fiery Furnace

To hike Fiery Furnace, you either need a special permit or do the Ranger-led hike. This is because several people have gotten lost on the trail and that’s no good in the desert. We opted for the Ranger-led hike since we were first timers.

It was about $16 per adult and $8 per child (there are age restrictions as well), so it wasn’t cheap, but it was worth it. For one, we all made it out alive and secondly, we got some great information about the geology we were seeing. Check out their site for more info on the Ranger-led hike.

Landscape Arch, Devils Garden trail and Double Arch are other great hikes to check out in Arches. You can read more about hiking in Arches here: Best Hikes in Arches National Park

Check out these great tips on hiking with kids .

Canyonlands National Park

Stop #2 on the Utah road trip and another one of Utah’s Big Five National Parks close to Moab is Canyonlands National Park. There are 2 ways to get into Canyonlands from Moab. You can head north and visit the Island In The Sky which is an amazing place to drive through and check out all the amazing overlooks and grand views during the drive.

You can also head south from Moab and drive about an hour and a half to the southern section of Canyonlands National Park . In this section of the park you’ll find The Needles district. We did a couple of hikes in The Needles including Cave Spring and Slickrock.

Cave Spring was a fun, short hike that had a few ladders to scale throughout the hike. Slickrock was a bit more strenuous as it was 2.5 miles and very hot when we visited in October.

Mesa Arch and Grand View Point are a couple other great hikes to do in Canyonlands.

Where To Stay In Moab

RV Options:

The main road in Moab has several hotels, motels and resorts to choose from. We stayed at the OK RV Park at the southern end of the city during our Utah road trip. This was a nice place to stay and had full hook-ups and also has a deal through Passport America . I’d stay there again.

Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown Campground , Up the Creek Campground , and Sun Outdoors Arches Gateway are all good options for staying in the city of Moab.

There is also a ton of BLM land on the outskirts of Moab that offer free or very cheap dry camping (no hookups at all). This is a great way to stay on the cheap for a few nights while you explore. Here’s more information on where you can find the BLM land.

Rent an RV ! Utah is a super RV friendly state. Click here to learn more about renting an RV in Utah .

Hotel Options:

SpringHill Suites By Marriott . We keep driving by this hotel and I wish we were staying there! It is in a good location just outside Arches and right before you get into the city.

VRBO Options:

There are a lot of VRBO options throughout the city and some even offer the chance to stay in an RV! If you want a place downtown with the space to sleep 10, check out this modern downtown house that also offers trailer parking.

If you plan to spend time any time in Salt Lake City, Utah be sure to check out this post: Best Airbnb Salt Lake City .

Where To Eat In Moab

Along with many of your usual restaurants, Moab has a few unique ones as well. We really liked The Moab Brewery. They had a good selection of their own brews (despite Utah’s strange liquor laws), as well as many vegetarian options and a decent kids menu. Definitely worth a stop.

Moab is the perfect place to stay to visit Arches and Canyonlands National Park!

Goblin Valley State Park

Continuing on the Utah road trip, the next stop will be Goblin Valley State Park. This is a super cool state park that is a perfect place for kids. The park has several hikes, a small campground, a disc golf course, and the best part is the valley itself.

The parking lot for the valley sets the scene as you get out of your car and look down over the valley you see thousands of hoodoo structures below that are all in the form of little trolls, hence the name Goblin Valley.

The park is very relaxed in that they allow climbing on all the structures, which was a welcome treat for the kids. We played hide-and-seek and explored for hours.

The other thing we really liked about Goblin Valley was the dried up riverbed that runs through the park. It was about 5 feet deep and zig zagged it’s way through the valley. We hiked it for quite a way and it seemed we were in a giant maze.

The valley also has rock climbing along some of the cliffs at the back of the valley. Again, you can hook up with a guide group to get you set up properly. Check out this 4-hour Canyoneering Adventure !

For more information on Goblin Valley, check out their website .

Where to Stay

As for where to stay or where to eat when visiting Goblin Valley, your options are pretty limited. There is the campground in the park which has tent sites and a few RV sites, but all of those are without water or electricity at the sites, but there are flush toilets, showers and communal water available for campers.

They also have 2 really cool Yurts available for rent. These have heat and a/c as well as beds, furniture and a great porch to relax on. They looked really cool.

We stayed just outside the park on BLM land which was free and provided a great place to stay while only being minutes from the park. The BLM land had fire pits and was situated near some mountains that we hiked and explored. The night sky was amazing here since there weren’t any city lights for miles around. This is boondocking with no hookups so be prepared for that.

There aren’t many in the area. You could either make this a stop on your way from Arches to Capitol Reef and then continue on to Capitol Reef or you could stay in a cabin here (which is about 45 minutes from Goblin Valley State Park): Duke’s Slickrock Cabins.

Where to Eat

You’ll have to bring what you want to eat as there aren’t any restaurants or stores in the park or anywhere close. The closest town is Hanksville which is about a half hour away and has a few small restaurants and even a couple motels. This would be your closest option for food and other accommodations.

Capitol Reef National Park

After visiting Goblin Valley State Park, head towards Capitol Reef National Park . This was our favorite out of all the Utah National Parks on our Utah road trip. Between the hikes, off-road driving, fruit picking and scenery, it is hard to beat. We actually almost didn’t go since it is a little bit off the main road but we are so glad we did and wish we would have stayed longer!

Capital Reef National Park is defined by the Waterpocket Fold which is an almost 100 mile long warp in the Earth’s crust. It is a monocline formation with the step-up in the rock layers. It is pretty amazing.

There is a tour that leaves from Salt Lake City if you stay in that area and want a private tour of Capitol Reef National Park!

Best Hikes in Capitol Reef National Park

Cassidy arch.

This is a longer day hike but worth it since you can actually walk out on the Arch! The trail takes you up to the arch and it is a difficult hike with a few spots that had me gripping the kids hands to make sure they stayed close to us.

You’ll climb almost 700 feet up as you make your way 1.7 miles to the Arch. And then 1.7 miles back down – which is easier but you still hit a few spots that are nerve wracking with kids. All that aside, we still recommend going! When you get to the arch there is a nice area where you can sit and have a snack and the kids can safely run around and explore (not on the arch but overlooking it).

Capitol Gorge Trail

We had heard this was a good trail to do but we weren’t prepared for the amazing views and drive to get there! It is in the park but you actually leave the main road and drive on a dirt road to get back to the trailhead. It is tight drive but popular so the road is well defined. Just keep an eye on the weather since you DON’T want to be driving on here if it is raining since it can get flooded.

Once you come to the trailhead you walk on a dried up riverbed with huge gorges on each side of you. It is so cool! Once you get to the end of the trail (about 1 mile in) you can choose to walk up the mountain to see the Tanks – these are water pools at the top of the cliff. Honestly it isn’t worth it to climb up there to see the tanks but it is worth it just to have the fun of climbing up the mountain.

You will also see historic inscriptions on the canyon walls that are over a hundred years old and if you are walking back around sunset you may end up with bats flying around your hat as you walk back to your car through the canyon walls. It was one of those cool yet scary situations – I didn’t want a bat to get caught in my hair!

Hickman Bridge

This is a very popular hike and for good reason. The views are amazing as you are hiking to the bridge. It is about a 1.8 mile hike roundtrip with an elevation gain of 400 feet.

Once you reach the bridge you can walk up and behind it or view it from the bottom. It is a very cool natural structure and you just hope when you are there isn’t the day it crumbles and falls!

We found an amazing BLM location that meant we were 6 miles from the park entrance and a short distance from the main road (This is important to us with our big rig since we don’t want to get a situation we can’t get out of) and it was FREE camping ! We even ended up having good enough 3G Verizon coverage that we could work from the RV.

This allowed us to stay longer then we thought we were going to. Getting in was a little stressful since there were a lot of rocks and divots – but as long as we took it slow we were OK.

We would recommend it for a place to stay on your Utah road trip. The location was great and the views were beautiful too! This is the exact location .

Camping Near Capitol Reef National Park

Next to the Gifford House is the Fruita Campground. They have 64 RV/tent sites along with 7 walk-up tent sites. There are no hookups at this campground but they do have a potable water fill as well as a dump station in the campground.

Plus you are in the park which would be awesome. They also have apple picking here if you come in season. Here are some great apple picking tips .

If you don’t mind driving in to the National Park, Flying U Country Store & RV Park is located in Joseph, Utah about 90 minutes from the park entrance.

Hotel Options Near Capitol Reef National Park

If you’re looking for a hotel stay when visiting Capitol Reef, there are several resorts just up the road. Capitol Reef Resort is just a few more miles up the road and offers nice rooms, pools and other amenities.

Town of Torrey

About 10 miles up the road and 4 miles from the boondocking site is the small town of Torrey. They do offer more hotels, RV parks, restaurants and shopping but just know it is a very small town.

Where to Eat Near Capitol Reef National Park

We stopped for ice cream at Slackers in Torrey and also had dinner at the pizza place: Red Cliff Restaurant. It is a small dining room but the pizza and service was great and if it is warm outside they had a nice patio area!

You can also get ice cream cups in the the National Park at the Gifford House and yummy apple pie!!

Capital Reef and Goblin Valley were definitely our favorite places to visit on our Utah road trip. I don’t know if it was because they were less busy, the openness, the amazing views, the fun hikes, or all of the above!

Bryce Canyon National Park

The cool thing about the Utah National Parks is that they are all unique in their own way. None of the parks feel like each other and they all have their own unique flair. When you come into Bryce Canyon National Park your first stop is the Visitor Center.

We like to make that our first stop so we can ask the rangers what they recommend. They know the park the best and we have always been happy with the suggestions they have made.

However, if you want to take a tour with a local guide, check out this 3-hour Sightseeing Tour.  Another tour option if you are staying in the Salt Lake City area is this Private Bryce Canyon National Park Tour . A third great option if you are staying in the Las Vegas area is this tour that includes both Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park .

Also note when you are in Bryce they highly recommend you take the shuttle service vs. driving your car. There is very limited parking throughout the park and the shuttle runs consistently. We don’t normally like to go this route since with kids we like having immediate access to our car if we need it.

But the first day there we did do the shuttle and it worked out great. The next time there we drove our car and had no problem finding parking. We were there in October which is off season – so my guess is parking is out of control during the busy season and the shuttle would make sense.

Best Hikes in Bryce National Park

Navajo loop trail/queens garden trail.

This was definitely our favorite hike in Bryce and the one the ranger recommended. She actually recommend that we do “Wall Street” first and walk down there vs. walking up. This was a great suggestion and made the hike that much better for our family.

The people walking up looked exhausted!! Wall Street is a combination of switch backs that takes you down into the canyon. It was such a fun trail. We started at Sunset Point (you can start from either end of the trail).

Once in the canyon you are walking among the beautiful hoo doo’s that are such crazy and cool looking rock formations they almost don’t seem real. You also walk through holes in the formations and gradually make your way back up. I say gradually but it is definitely a tiring hike on the way up. Luckily the views are great and there are multiple places you can stop to take a breather or grab a quick picture.

For more information on this combo hike click here.

Mossy Cave Waterfall

This is a short hike at less then 1 mile roundtrip and is actually located at a location where you have to leave the main national park and go a few miles to get to the trailhead. For that reason it is less busy but totally worth the trip.

You hike to a fork where you can either go view the waterfall or the cave. You can easily do both and we definitely recommend that. The waterfall is beautiful and the cave was really cool!

View Points

You can drive the whole road of the park and make spots at the pullouts along the way for a variety of different views and observation points. Even though we did start to feel like they all were really similar and we didn’t really need to stop at every pull out. The one we do recommend is: Inspiration Point.

It is a short hike straight up the hill to get to the point but the views are worth it and it is also a great place to catch a sunset! The other place is Sunset Point which gives you another amazing view of the hoodoos or Sunrise point on the other side. They really are a sight to see. Bryce was spectacular with all of its sandstone cliffs and unique structures.

RV/Camping Near Bryce National Park

Bryce Canyon has 2 campgrounds right in the park. The North Campground has 99 sites in a mix of RV and tent sites with no hookups. There is a General Store in the area that offers laundry, showers, snacks and supplies.

There is also Sunset Campground, which is a mile and a half further into the park and consists of 100 sites. Again, no hookups at this campground either.

For more information on camping in Bryce Canyon click here.

We did not stay at one of these but instead stayed in Panguitch which was about a 30 minute drive from Bryce on Hwy 89: Paradise RV Park . We stayed for 2 reasons. 1 there were full hookups and after boondocking with no hook ups for over a week we were ready for hookups and 2 it was only $100 for the whole week! That is really cheap for an RV park. To get this price we did use our Passport America card again.

The town of Panguitch has a few restaurants, grocery stores, etc. It is by no means large but had what we needed.

Both Circleville RV Park and Duck Creek Village RV are about an hour from the National Park if you don’t mind driving in a bit.

Hotel Options Near Bryce National Park

The town of Bryce is located right outside the entrance and there are plenty of hotels and restaurants to chose from. The one that stuck out to us was Ruby’s Inn which is a hotel, RV resort, and campground.

It looked like they also offered activities like horseback riding, mountain biking and ATVing. I’m not sure who Ruby is, but she pretty much has the town of Bryce locked down!

Where to Eat Near Bryce National Park

We stopped for a quick dinner at the Canyon Diner (which is also part of Ruby’s conglomerate), which is a cafeteria style fast food joint. The food was OK but it offered a quick dinner for a reasonable price, so that worked for us!

Our top recommendation and where you can get great pizza at an amazing price is The Pizza Place in Tropic. One of the lady’s who worked at a gift shop in Bryce told us about it and we were so glad she did. The pizza was yummy and the price was right (more like normal small town prices vs. National Park town prices).

We did have to drive about 15 minutes from the park on Hwy 12 and if you blink you will drive right through the town. But we would definitely go back and highly recommend it.

Next time we come through Bryce I really want to stay in the National Park. The park has a great walking/biking trail and we liked the vibe inside the park. It would be fun to stay at the campground and be able to ride our bikes to the trail, visitor center, restaurants, etc. in the park.

Zion National Park

The last stop on the Utah road trip is  Zion National Park in southern Utah. We actually visited from the same campground that we stayed at for Bryce – because like I mentioned it was $100 for a week for full hookups! That meant we had to drive an hour to get there but it was a pretty easy drive and the campgrounds we found around Zion were expensive! And everything we found looked like there weren’t really many boondocking options especially for a large rig like ours (39 feet).

This meant when we got there we entered through the tunnel. This tunnel is no joke! It is about a mile long and feels like it goes on forever as you drive through the mountain. Quite an entrance!

We have heard it can get really back up since they only let one way go at a time. Luckily we only had to wait about 15 minutes.

For more information on the tunnel including vehicle restrictions and specifics on the special permit, please click here.

Once in we kind of got the feel that we were at Disney World. There were signs all over the place, LOTS of people, and only a shuttle service – so you didn’t even have the option to drive your car in the park. I have mixed feelings about the setup. I am glad so many people are visiting but we were definitely missing the more relaxed feel of Capitol Reef!

If you want to book a tour that includes both Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, check out this option!

Best Hikes in Zion National Park

The narrows.

The first thing we did was meet up with Arika from Zion Adventure Photog! They have a photography company where they will take your family pictures as you explore part of the park. How cool is that?! We met Arika and took the shuttle to the famous Narrows Zion hike that takes you in the water as you walk through the gorge with super high walls on each side.

It was cold but so fun to do this hike and have Arika capture it for us. She took amazing pictures and we love having family pictures that show us out doing what we love to do! Arika was great with the kids and I think the pictures do an amazing job of telling how great she was and how much fun we had.

If you are in Zion you should definitely plan on doing the Narrows. We love unique hikes and this is one of them. If you want you can rent water shoes and wet suits from a location outside of the park.

The nice thing about the Narrows is you can go in and hike as far as you want and turn around. You don’t have to hike the whole thing – which is 16 miles and you need a permit to do it. You walk on the Riverside Walk for one mile from the Temple of Sinawava before you get to the Virginia River and start to walk in the water. As you can see this hike is going to take some preparing but it is worth it.

We did it in our Keens with nice picture clothes on and brought a backpack with a change of clothes for when we were done. Being that we went in October it was COLD but I have heard no matter when you go the water is cold but it would obviously be warmer if the temperate was in the 90’s and not the 60’s. I have also of people going in the winter and loving it (with wet suits on).

Learn more about the Narrows hike here.

Book your own sessions with Arika from Zion Adventure Photog !

Emerald Pools

The second hike we did – on a different day was the Emerald Pools hike. This hike was OK we didn’t like that the views weren’t that good on the hike. There are 3 pools, Lower Emerald Pool, Middle Emerald Pool and Upper Emerald Pool that are fed from the Virgin River.

These are 3 separate hikes, but can be done all at the same time. It is about 3 miles round trip.

It was fun when we got up to the top pool and we really liked the part where you walk under the wall that has water falling down from it! Before this hike we had fun walking around the grounds by the Zion Lodge. It had a large grassy area, a cafe on the porch (that sold beer) and other things :). It was really cool that they had a place like this in the middle of the park!

For more information on hiking in Zion, including maps, check out their website . One of the hikes I know we want to come back and do when the kids is older is Angels Landing – it looks amazing but not for young kids!

I also think we need more days in Zion to really explore the park. We will be back!

Camping Near Zion National Park

Like I mentioned we stayed at the Paradise RV Park which was about 1 hour away. If you are looking for camping/RVing closer to the park there were a few options but like I had mentioned they are more on expensive side. There is also camping at the campgrounds inside the National Park.

Learn more about lodging options here .

If you want to splurge a bit, Glampers Inn RV Park is only about 30 minutes from the National Park in Hurricane, Utah and offers a really cool atmosphere and fun amenities.

Hotels Near Zion National Park

If you are looking for a hotel you would want to look into the city of Springdale . It is literally right outside of the park – like you could walk into the park from the city. The main road has a variety of hotels where you could stay.

Where To Eat Zion National Park

The city of Springdale had a lot of really cool restaurants but was also very busy. Instead of waiting for 30 minutes for a table we opted for the Subway. Which worked out great for us! If you want more of a restaurant experience Springdale will have you covered.

If you want to keep exploring Southern Utah also check out the town of Mount Carmel for some more great outdoor activities and hikes.

We had an amazing time visiting Utah and all of the National Parks. My sister and her family enjoyed driving down the east side of the state and didn’t see as many of the National Parks but really enjoyed the remoteness of that part of Utah too.

There are also a few other places we would like to come back to explore: Salt Lake City, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Monument Valley.

Update : Check out our post on Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and our video below on Monument Valley!

Here is our video of when we got to go back to Monument Valley:

The most challenging part for us while being in Utah was getting beer and wine! Utah has a law that they can only sell beer that has a 3.5% alcohol content. But still costs the same . . . Plus you can’t buy it at the grocery store so you have to find a liquor store.

If you like to have your beer and wine be sure you stock up before you head into the state!

If you haven’t yet we highly recommend taking a road-trip through Utah you could literally spend months exploring this park. But even if you only have a 2 weeks you could still see a lot of this amazing state!

Other places to visit in Utah:

We have now visited Grand Staircase-Escalante and it was awesome! You can take one of the most scenic byways in the US to get here – Hwy 12. We did it with our RV – it was scary at times but also totally doable!

Lake Powell, Page, Arizona , Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon are just a few ways that you can continue your road trip in and beyond Utah. Including the gorgeous Antelope Canyon.

Being able to see Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Arches and Zion National Park in the Colorado Plateau all in one trip is simply amazing and makes it one of the best United State road trips.

Rent an RV ! Utah is a super RV friendly state. Click here to learn more about renting an RV in Utah . Note – if you do rent a larger RV you may also want to get a rental car so you can get to some of the harder to reach hikes and locations.

Any other stops you’d recommend for a Utah road trip? What is your favorite part? If you want to continue your road trip head down to Las Vegas – always a fun spot!! Or go north for all the fun things to do in Salt Lake City !

The best time to visit a national park depends on what you want to experience on your trip. The US is a huge country with diverse weather, foliage, and wildlife. Most parks change quite dramatically from season to season. Our trips run all year round but spring through to early fall is the most popular time to go when the weather is mild, crowds are smaller, and hiking conditions are good.

What are the top 10 most visited national parks in the US?

The 10 most visited national parks (The National Park Service, 2020) are:

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  • Yellowstone National Park
  • Zion National Park
  • Rocky Mountain National Park
  • Grand Teton National Park
  • Grand Canyon National Park
  • Cuyahoga Valley National Park
  • Acadia National Park
  • Olympic National Park
  • Joshua Tree National Park

What is mobile/cell phone service and internet access like in US national parks?

Mobile phone service, Wi-Fi, and internet access vary, and some parks will have coverage while others may be completely cut off.

Most visitor centers, lodges, and restaurants will offer free internet access, but it’s worth reading up on coverage or checking with your guide before your trip begins so you can be prepared.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Poor marks handed congress for votes on national park legislation.

Share

Fewer members of the U.S. House of Representatives received A grades from the National Parks Action Fund for their votes on issues important to the National Park System and National Park Service/Rebecca Latson file

Congress's action on legislation favorable to the National Park System and the National Park Service showed a decrease in the number of politicians viewed as champions for the parks, according to grades handed out by the National Parks Action Fund .

The grades , based on House votes during the first session of the 118th Congress, showed a decline in the number House of Representatives members who received an "A," an increase in House members who received an "F," and counted 13 states where the entire congressional delegation received an "F."

The grades were based on votes taken by the House on:

  • Protecting Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida from harmful oil and gas drilling.
  • Allowing excessive, noisy air tours in national parks.
  • Jeopardizing the survival of endangered species.
  • Undoing protections around Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico.
  • Preventing funding for National Park Service workforce development.
  • Weakening the future of conservation under the Antiquities Act.
  • Cutting funding for the National Park Service.

No grades were handed out for senators, since that chamber has not voted on any of those issues.

“America’s national parks have long served as common ground for Congress, even in times of serious political division and strife,” said  Theresa Pierno, president and CEO of the National Parks Conservation Association and board chair of the National Parks Action Fund.  “Conservation unifies Americans in a way no other topic can. Time and again, we have seen members of Congress cross the aisle and forge unlikely bonds with their colleagues in the name of protecting our national parks. Our latest scorecard proves that kind of bipartisan spirit is certainly still possible, even in 2024.”

In the recent past, bipartisan Congressional cooperation on public lands issues culminated in victories like the Great American Outdoors Act. This landmark legislation, passed in 2020 to address billions of dollars in deferred maintenance projects at national parks, has already significantly improved conditions at national parks. The National Park Service has used Great American Outdoors Act funds to address crumbling infrastructure at iconic national parks like Yellowstone and Great Smoky Mountains, to name just a few successes.

“But despite the significant bipartisan gains afforded to national parks over the years, we are witnessing some inconsistency on important park votes in this Congress. For instance, many in Congress consistently vote in support of national monuments under the Antiquities Act but miss the mark on annual park funding,” noted Pierno. “Disappointingly, this year’s scorecard shows a notable decline in bipartisanship, and a slight decrease in members of Congress who received an ‘A,’ score for voting to protect national parks.

“As national parks continue to face sizable threats ranging from record understaffing and underfunding to the looming specter of climate change, now is not the time to abandon these priceless places. This scorecard should serve as a wake-up call for Congress to put partisan differences aside and work together to protect our one-of-a-kind national parks for future generations. Voters who love experiencing our outdoors and preserving our heritage expect nothing less from their elected officials,” she added.

Since its founding in 2016, the National Parks Action Fund has tracked the most impactful national parks legislation in each Congress and assigned members A-F scores based on their votes.

Fast facts from the National Parks Action Fund’s 2024 Congressional Scorecard:

  • Less House members received an A — a 4 percent decline since 2022.
  • More House Members received an F — a 6 percent increase since 2022.
  • In eight states, the entire House delegation received an A score: Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Hawaii, District of Columbia, Delaware, and Connecticut.
  • In 13 states and territories, the entire House Delegation received an F score: West Virginia, Utah, South Dakota, Puerto Rico, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Iowa, Idaho, Guam, Arkansas, and Alabama.

You can drive along 700 years of history at Mesa Verde National Park

private tours of utah national parks

One look at the iconic cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, and it’s easy to imagine the lives that once bustled within them.

In a free audio tour visitors can download, park ranger Thelma Jean Atsye, who is Laguna Pueblo, says, “I hope that when you hear our stories, you will begin to see these places as we do — not as ruins, but as homes.”

There are more than 600 cliff dwellings within the park, which visitors can appreciate from a distance or up close on tours.

Here’s what travelers should know about Mesa Verde, the latest national park in USA TODAY’s yearlong series .

Why is Mesa Verde so famous?

Mesa Verde is famous for its Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings , like Cliff Palace .

“They’re some of the most magnificent examples of architecture in our country from (nearly 1,000) years ago,” the park’s Chief of Interpretation, Kristy Sholly, told USA TODAY.

But they’re not the only places people lived. According to the park’s website, the Ancestral Pueblo lived on the mesa tops for 600 years before moving into the cliffs and continued to farm on mesa tops even afterward.

Why was Mesa Verde abandoned?

“We don't really have a lot of answers to why they might have left the Mesa Verde region; we have ideas,” Sholly said. “But obviously the people that were living in the Mesa Verde area are still in the region today. They just moved to areas south.”

There are 26 Native tribes historically tied to Mesa Verde:

  • The 19 Pueblos of New Mexico: Acoma, Cochiti, Isleta, Jemez, Laguna, Nambe, Ohkay Owingeh, Picuris, Pojoaque, San Felipe, San Ildefonso, Sandia, Santa Ana, Santa Clara, Santo Domingo, Taos, Tesuque, Zia and Zuni
  • Hopi Tribe in Arizona
  • Jicarilla Apache Nation in New Mexico
  • Navajo Nation in Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico
  • Northern Ute in Utah
  • Southern Ute in Colorado
  • Ute Mountain Ute Tribe in Colorado
  • Ysleta del Sur Pueblo in Texas

Can you go inside Mesa Verde?

Yes. From Oct. 23 through April 30, the park entrance fee is $20 per private vehicle. From May 1 through Oct. 22, that fee goes up to $30. Travelers can buy passes in advance online. Those who prefer to pay in person should know that only debit cards and credit cards are accepted at the park entrance.

Can you drive through Mesa Verde?

Visitors can drive into Mesa Verde, but not all the way through it.

“It’s an out and back,” Sholly said. “You really have to drive the full like 20 miles up into the park to really get into the ancestral sites and then you're going to be driving the same amount of time out.”

Visitors who are tight on time should budget for at least an hour’s drive, each way.

Can you see Mesa Verde cliff dwellings from the road?

Yes. Visitors can see various cliff dwellings along Cliff Palace Loop Road and Mesa Top Loop Road .

“It's been set up to really see 700 years of architectural history on Mesa Top Loop,” Sholly said. “And there's accessible overlooks where you can just get out of your car, look down into the canyon and actually see them there along the drive.”

Can you do Mesa Verde in a day?

Sholly recommends spending one to two days in the park, noting that there are lots of other things to see nearby.

Visitors who want to spend the night in Mesa Verde can camp or between April and October, stay at Far View Lodge onsite .

What is the closest city to Mesa Verde?

The town of Mancos is the closest community to the park, but Sholly said, “There's not as many hotels and restaurants there.”

Cortez is about 10 miles away. Durango, which is larger, is about 35 miles away. Both offer numerous visitor services.

Durango-La Plata County Airport offers regional service on American Airlines and United Airlines.

What is the best time to visit Mesa Verde National Park?

“It's great to come (in summer) when everything's in full swing, but I would say probably early June or September when it's a little bit cooler,” Sholly said.

She said the summer heat combined with the park’s elevation can be challenging for people who aren’t used to it.

“People will come from sea level … and then suddenly they're at 7,000 feet. There's less oxygen,” she said. “They get a lot more dehydrated more quickly, and we do find that there's a lot more medical issues when people are trying to adjust to the elevation and the heat.”

She recommended all visitors drink plenty of water and avoid traveling during the hottest times of day.

What do I need to know before going to Mesa Verde National Park?

“There's a lot of really great self-guided experiences at Mesa Verde,” Sholly said. “We do offer talks every day that are free to the public.”

But the only way visitors can enter cliff dwellings is on a ticketed ranger-led tour . The 2024 tour season begins on May 12. Prices will be posted on Recreation.gov when tickets go on sale, two weeks in advance.

“I think that even without the ranger-led tour, there's still a lot to experience at Mesa Verde,” Sholly said, calling out hiking opportunities and noting that the park was actually set aside for some of its scenic wilderness, not just cliff dwellings.
