The different itineraries

While all our Everest Base Camp treks take you right to Base Camp, there are some differences. For example, if you're a nature-lover and want to see the crystal waters of the Gokyo Lakes, try our 19-Day Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes Trek. If you want to immerse yourself in the local Nepalese culture, our 15-day Everest Base Camp trip might be for you, as it includes an overnight stay in the famous Sherpa Village.

Trekking experts

As owners of the largest inbound tour operator in Nepal , we have years of experience on the ground. Our English-speaking local leaders are more than just someone to make sure you don’t get lost on the trail, they are there to share their stories and insights about the culture and history of the region too.

safety icon

Safety first

Your safety is our number one priority. All of our leaders are trained in Advanced Wilderness First Aid and are qualified AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) specialists. Thanks to our specialised safety equipment and crew, our annual helicopter evacuation rescue rate is less than two per cent, well below industry average.

local communities icon

Local matters

All of our guides, assistant guides and porters are local to the Everest region and experienced in their field. But they’re not only trekking experts, they are your key to connecting with the local people, food, landscape and culture. With plenty of stories and tips to share, you’ll feel like an adopted local in no time.

Porter care

We are committed to ensuring respectful and fair working conditions for all trekking porters. Any leaders that join Intrepid must start out as a porter, even if they have led for another company before. This ensures that all our leaders understand the important role a porter plays on a trek.  Learn more about our Porter Policy .

plane icon

Our trips don’t only include our incredible crew but also all the safety gear required to help get you to Everest Base Camp safely. All accommodation and transport is included, plus a return flight to Lukla to get you to the start of the trek.

sustainable travel icon

Sustainable travel

We have a ‘bring in, bring out’ philosophy on our Base Camp treks, meaning any rubbish should be taken back to Kathmandu and disposed of there. Rubbish disposed of in villages along the trek has to be walked back to major hubs using porters or yaks, so the less we leave behind, the better.

Meet the team

everest travels and tours

We have very experienced crew, with most of our local leaders having worked with us for over 10 years. Many of our porters and assistant guides on Everest Base Camp trek are Sherpas. The term Sherpa is commonly misused by foreigners to refer to almost any guide or climbing supporter hired for trekking expeditions in the Himalayas, regardless of their ethnicity. However, Sherpas are a local ethnic group from the Everest region, renowned in the international climbing and mountaineering community for their hardiness, expertise, and experience at very high altitudes. Many Sherpas are highly regarded as leading mountaineers and specialists in their local area.

How far will I walk each day?

We walk for between four and eight hours each day, some days being more strenuous than others. Trekking is mostly done on paths, but there is the occasional rough terrain along the way, and some days will include ascents and descents of 500 metres or more. This, in addition to the altitude can account for the variation in hiking time and distance per day.

Do I need hiking boots?

Well fitted, comfortable and sturdy shoes are essential, and can make a great difference in the enjoyment of your trip. Make sure to break them in before your trip, either by wearing them on training hikes or even just around the house. The first time you wear your boots should not be on the trail!

Will I suffer from altitude sickness?

Everest Base Camp sits at 5,380m/17,600 feet. At this altitude it’s common for travellers to experience some adverse health effects – regardless of age, gender or fitness level. Everyone will adapt to the altitude and thinning air differently. This is why we always try to keep the ascent slow and steady, to allow your body to acclimatise and make your journey to the summit easier. Some pre-existing medical conditions are known to worsen at high altitude and be difficult to adequately treat on the ground, leading to more serious consequences, so it’s important that you discuss any pre-existing medical conditions with your doctor before you leave home.

Find out more about altitude sickness

What can I do to help reduce my chances of getting altitude sickness?

You can help your body to acclimatise and avoid altitude sickness by:

  • Drinking plenty of water – at least four litres per day on top of other forms of fluids such as tea or soups.
  • Avoiding alcohol, tobacco and substances that can interfere with good delivery of oxygen to the body or cause dehydration.
  • Eating small, frequent meals high in carbohydrates.
  • Taking it easy or have a regular break. Walk at a slower pace than you would at sea level and avoid overexertion.

What training should I do in preparation?

We have a number of different training guides available:

  • Top training tips for Everest Base Camp
  • Our trekking training guide
  • 5 things to know before you trek Everest Base Camp

How can I help myself acclimatise once I am there?

Your body needs time to adjust to the altitudes and acclimatise, which will make you feel better in the long run. We have taken this into account in our Itinerary by limiting the altitude we increase daily, and by giving you extra nights to acclimatise in Namche Bazaar.

What is the accommodation like?

Teahouses are the most common accommodation style on Everest Base Camp trek. They are simple but cosy, with shared toilets and washing facilities. As a general rule, the closer you are to Base Camp the more basic the teahouses are. While the views of Everest and the surrounding Himalayas are spectacular, the amenities are understandably basic.

Hot shower facilities are available in some teahouses for a price but occasionally a hot shower means a bucket of hot water.

Electricity to charge devices as well as paid WiFi is sometimes available. We suggest purchasing a solar charged portable charger to bring with you.

What is the food like?

Food along the Everest Base Camp trail is simple and filling. All food must be carried to your guesthouses by yaks or people, so the higher you get, the more limited and expensive your food options will be. The most common meal on the trail is Dal Bhat, sometimes served with a small side of cooked or pickled veg. Dal is lentil soup, and Baht is rice. It’s filling, delicious, and you can have free refills! You can get western style food like pizza but it’s usually quite expensive. Breakfast is typically a choice of noodle soup, porridge, fried bread, and eggs.

We do not include meals while trekking, allowing you to choose what you want to eat and when. We know from experience that the altitude and physical exercise can affect appetites differently.

Where do we eat on the trek?

While it’s not compulsory, our leaders will always encourage our groups to eat together to help build group dynamics over shared meals. The places your leader will recommend are usually the teahouses we use for accommodation. These teahouses have been inspected and approved by our local operations team and are continually tried and tested by our travellers, guides, and leaders that eat there.

The teahouses we sleep in do not rely on our travellers buying food and beverages for payment, as is sometimes the case with independent travellers and other operators. Intrepid pays the teahouses for the accommodation they provide to our groups and any other services they provide generates additional income for them.

How will I get clean drinking water?

It is essential to bring two 1-litre water bottles to refill along the way. While trekking, boiled or safe water is available for drinking, however you should also carry a water purification method. This could be in the form of filtered water bottles, purification drops/tablets, or ultraviolet sterilisation pens that are available in camping stores, some pharmacies, or online.

How do the porters work? Do I carry my own luggage?

The evening before you leave Kathmandu, you'll receive a duffle bag to pack all the clothes and necessities you’ll need for the duration of the trek (10 kilograms or 22 pounds maximum). Your excess luggage will be stored at our starting point hotel in Kathmandu.

Your team of porters will carry the duffle bags for you, together with the food and equipment for the trail. Keep in mind that you won't have access to these items until the end of each day, as the porters will always be ahead of the group. While hiking you will need to carry your own day pack with your water, camera, sunscreen, rain jacket, warm layers, hand sanitiser, and any other personal items.

What should I pack?

It’s important you refer to the packing recommendations in your Essential Trip Information, however, for a general guide check out our blog, ‘ What to pack for a trekking trip to Nepal ’.

Do I need to bring all my own hiking gear?

We understand that you might not own all the appropriate gear required to trek in the Himalayas. Thankfully Kathmandu has plenty of shops where you can rent or buy hiking apparel, sleeping bags, and trekking poles. While there are a few stores which sell real brand names, most sell knock offs with varying degrees of quality. Your trip leader can assist you in renting or purchasing the items you require.

When is the best time to trek?

Autumn: The most popular trekking season for Everest Base Camp runs from mid-September to November. October is traditionally the most popular time for this trek, when the views are great, the skies are usually clear, and the temperatures are not too extreme.

Winter: Some travellers prefer the colder winter months, from December to February, when the days are still sunny, but the trails are quieter. If you’re travelling over this time be sure to bring some extra layers of warm clothes.

Spring: If you go to Everest Base Camp over March, April and May you may be lucky enough to meet the people who will be attempting to summit the mountain. Mid-March to mid-May is one of the best times to see rhododendrons, Nepal’s national flower, in full bloom.

Summer: Is monsoon season, so we don't recommend trekking in June or July.

What is the weather like?

Depending on when you travel the weather can be vastly different, but it is best to prepare for all weather, as it can vary throughout the day. During the day in the earlier months of the trekking season it can get very warm and sunny, but during the winter months it can drop well below 0 degrees Celsius, so warm clothing is vital.

No matter what the temperature, or how cloudy it is, always use sun protection! The atmosphere is thinner at high altitude meaning the UV rays are more extreme. Snow can also reflect UV rays, which greatly intensifies UV radiation.

Are there ATMs along the trek?

ATMs are not common on the Everest Base Camp region. There are only two towns where you will see ATMs: Lukla and Namche Bazar. It is quite common for there to be problems with those ATMs or for them to be out of money, so we advise our travellers not to rely on them and make sure you leave Kathmandu with sufficient cash for meals and anything else you might require.

What is the difference between trekking to Everest Base Camp and summiting Everest?

At Intrepid, we offer treks to Everest Base Camp, not to the summit. Trekking to the summit of Everest can cost upwards of $60,000USD and is far more technical than the trek to Base Camp. The summit climb requires previous trekking experience and knowledge of how to climb ice, rock and use summit equipment. Base Camp, on the other hand, requires no technical trekking skills or experience and is considered much safer than summitting. The trek to Base Camp takes between seven to nine days, whereas a summit expedition takes between seven and nine weeks.

Most people who trek to Base Camp go for the experience of seeing Mt Everest, while exploring the local culture. Those who undertake a summit expedition have the primary goal of making it to the top.

Do the porters carry first aid kits?

Yes. We carry multiple, comprehensive first aid kits and our porters and leaders are fully trained on their use. We also take oxygen cylinders, oximeter, portable altitude chamber, and satellite phone.

Are your leaders trained to recognise the symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)?

Absolutely! Intrepid have invested in the highest standards of training of our staff, including advanced altitude training delivered by local doctors who undergo refresher training every two years. We also train them on how to respond in the case of a moderate or severe case of altitude sickness – which will always mean organising for the affected traveller to descend immediately. During your briefing on the first evening of your trip, your leader will talk to you about symptoms of AMS and how to recognise them.

Do you carry medicine for altitude?

Yes – there are three key, potentially life-saving drugs that our teams carry on the mountain. These are Dexamethasone, Diamox and Nifedipine and they used to treat cerebral and pulmonary oedema, which are the two potentially life-threatening complications of severe AMS. Our mountain guides are fully trained on the use of these drugs for altitude related illnesses.

Will oxygen be available?

We carry medical oxygen – and when a group has four travellers or more, this will mean multiple cylinders will be distributed among the team of porters to ensure that oxygen is always quickly available in the case of an emergency. The oxygen that we carry is strictly for emergency use only – and cannot be used by clients to assist in climbing.

Do you carry Gamow bags or PACs?

Yes. We carry PACs, a portable altitude chamber, which are used for sufferers of severe AMS. When a person is suffering from AMS a descent of just a few hundred metres back down the mountain is enough to make a difference. However, a rapid descent on foot is not always possible on Everest Base Camp trek, in which case PACs are more effective.

How do your leaders communicate on the trek?

Mobile (cell) phone coverage on the mountain is improving – but it's still patchy in many areas. For this reason, Intrepid leaders carry short wave radios to allow for communication in the case of an emergency.

Who is your trekking operator in Nepal?

All our trips in Nepal are operated by PEAK DMC Nepal, which is a fully owned Intrepid Travel company based in Kathmandu.

Responsible Travel

We use porters on our treks instead of yaks to carry bags and equipment. Even though animal transport is much cheaper, we have found the animals aren’t treated well and there is no weight limit enforced while using these animals as carriers. We have a detailed Porter Policy in place, to ensure our porters are respected and treated in a dignified way.

At the end of your tour please consider donating to the KEEP Porters Clothing Bank . Contrary to the belief that porters are well-adjusted to the cold and altitude of the Himalayas, every year many porters suffer from a variety of illnesses such as altitude sickness, snow blindness, hypothermia and frostbite and some even die as a result. The Clothing Bank was set up in 2009 to provide ill-prepared porters with better clothing suitable for trekking in a mountain environment and reduce the number of unnecessary illnesses and fatalities which occur each year.

Everest Base Camp Trek Tour

From the moment we booked tour with the initial emails (they were extremely quick to reply to any questions) to getting us back to the airport once our tour finished, everything was perfect. We had an initial briefing with Ganga at our lovely hotel explaining everything the day before our trip began. We then met our guides Gorkana and Ram who were both fantastic. They were both extremely attentive throughout the whole tour from allowing flexibility within each day to tailor the tour to our groups needs and wants to each and every meal, making sure our food order was in promptly and everything was served and cleared efficiently. Having two guides for a group of 6 was perfect, if some wanted to go ahead one guide could go and one could stay behind. There was flexibility on our acclimatisation days depending on how people felt to hike all the way or just half way. Everything was tailored too. We also had fantastic porters who made sure our bags were there at our rooms every night before we even arrived and picked up the following morning. We had a fantastic group of people which made it even more amazing, everyone got along so well and there were zero issues. Overall I would highly recommend this company and if we ever go back to do another tour in this region we will definitely be using them again! Thanks again!

Everest Base Camp Trek 12 Days Tour

Everest Base Camp Trek 12 Days

We recently had the opportunity to embark on the Everest Base Camp trek with Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Team, and I must say, it was an experience of a lifetime. What sets this company apart is their commitment to sustainable tourism and their use of local guides. This not only ensures that you receive authentic knowledge and cultural insights but also contributes to the local communities and economies. From the moment I joined the trek, I felt a deep connection to the local culture. Our guide, a Sherpa with extensive knowledge of the region, shared fascinating stories and anecdotes that brought the mountains to life. It was evident that he had a genuine passion for his homeland and was dedicated to preserving its beauty and heritage. Throughout the trek, we had the opportunity to interact with local communities, visit monasteries, and witness traditional ceremonies. This immersive experience allowed us to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of the region. It was truly a privilege to be a part of their world, even if only for a short time. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Team's commitment to sustainable tourism was evident in every aspect of the trip. They ensured that we left no trace, minimizing our impact on the environment. They also supported local businesses and initiatives, further contributing to the well-being of the communities we visited. The accommodations and meals provided were excellent, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and traditional Nepali cuisine. It was a delight to savor the flavors and experience the culinary traditions of the region. The team took great care in catering to dietary preferences and ensuring that we were well-nourished throughout the trek. I highly recommend Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Team to travelers who are looking for sustainable tours and authentic cultural experiences. Their use of local guides ensures that you have access to true, firsthand knowledge and insights. This, combined with their commitment to preserving the environment and supporting local communities, makes them an excellent choice for those seeking meaningful and responsible adventures.

Everest Base Camp Trek Tour

We had a wonderful time in Nepal. We did an Everest base camp trek in early January with alpine ramble treks and they were amazing, the team were super helpful and professional. From the begging to end, we all had a really great time. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by the friendly and cheerful driver Kumar and our guide Iman, and took us to the hotel where we met Dil (owner of the company ) and explained us everything about the trek and also helped us with the gear that we needed for our trek. The team is extremely helpful and very attentive. We really enjoyed the time Being with this team and already looking forward to come back to Nepal for another adventure. We will surely go with alpine ramble!

Epic scenery, amazing group of people - such a fun dynamic, and everyone was so supportive as the trek got into the higher altitudes. Loved every second.

Classic Nepal Tour Tour

Classic Nepal Tour

We had a really wonderful time on our trip to Nepal. Everyone at Everest Tours was really helpful and our driver Raju was excellent. Accommodation and food was good too. We got to see everything mentioned in the tour information. The only downside was the travel between locations which, due to the road works, was not a pleasant experience. We were in a small car which is really not suitable for the terrain, suggestion would be that the tour operator should be using 4x4 vehicles for these trips. This trip allowed us to get familiar with Nepal and we will be back!

A fantastic bunch of team and were expertly guided on the trip by our Guide Nawin and the porters. All in all, it was a trip of a lifetime and the helicopter flight back to Kathmandu was definitely a highlight of our trek. Guide Pasang Dawa Sherpa - An Amazing Man! By: Larry C In completing the challenging trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp in October 2022 with Ace the Himalaya, we were so blessed to have Pasang Dawa Sherpa as our guide! Pasang was absolutely amazing! He not only led us every step of the way, but he was always so positive and encouraging. Pasang literally guided us from our hotel in Katmandu, riding with us on the long, winding road to Manthali for the flight to Lukla, then following our trek to Everest Base Camp, and Mt. Kalapathar, he remained with us all the way back to Kathmandu. The following day, we met with him for a celebratory dinner, and he presented us with special certificates for completing the trek successfully. During the trek, Pasang took care of all arrangements, even helping serve our meals and making sure we all remained healthy and acclimatized to the high altitude trekking. Pasang is such a friendly, humble man, but he always took charge of everything, and every village we came to he was so well known and respected by everyone. Pasang had a great sense of humor and an unlimited knowledge of the mountains, the cultures, the religions, and the history of the Khumbu Region we were hiking through. He was such a great guide in every way, and I would feel so privileged to follow his lead again when I make my next trip to Nepal. Larry Compton

Everest Base Camp Trek Tour

Wow! What an incredible trip to Everest Base Camp with Sherpa Expeditions! The beauty of the mountains was simply breathtaking, with epic scenery that left me in awe at every turn. But what truly made this trek unforgettable was the amazing group of people I had the pleasure of trekking with. The dynamic was so much fun, and everyone was incredibly supportive as we tackled the higher altitudes. Our guide was a true gem - knowledgeable, experienced, and always ready to share fascinating insights about the region. Their presence added so much value to the trek, making it not just an adventure but an educational experience as well. The scenery throughout the journey was nothing short of spectacular, from the lush valleys to the snow-capped peaks. I cannot recommend Sherpa Expeditions highly enough for their exceptional service and support. The entire trip was well-organized, and their attention to detail was evident in every aspect. If you're looking for an unforgettable journey to Everest Base Camp with a fantastic group and unmatched support, Sherpa Expeditions is the way to go!

Everest Base Camp Trek Service Tour

Everest Base Camp Trek Service

I had a really good time on my EBC trek, my guide Arjun was very helpful, as he helped carry some of my things and told me exactly what was needed as we climbed up. He even paid for my lunches and dinner on the road, and I paid him back at the end of each day to make it easier for me. It was a tiring journey and quite cold at night, but I was very lucky with the weather being clear the whole time, so I had an amazing view of Everest. I highly recommend booking with Himalaya Heart Treks & Expeditions as they make everything easy and convenient, such as airport pickups and accommodation in mountains.

Everest Base Camp Luxury Lodge Trek Tour

We wholeheartedly recommend Peregrine Treks for this luxurious trekking experience.

Elbrus, Europe's highest peak, is a giant dormant volcano that separates Europe from Asia. The straightforward yet spectacular climb is contrasted by the cultural wonders of enigmatic Russia.

With short 12 or 14 day options, the Elbrus Expedition is an ideal objective as your first or second of the Seven Summits.

  • Get a taste of high-mountain adventure on one of the Seven Summits
  • Also one of the Volcanic Seven Summits, comprised of the highest volcanoes on each of the seven continents
  • Opportunity to discover the wonders of St Petersburg or Moscow
  • Experience non-technical moderate-altitude mountaineering
  • Options to Add-On climbs of Kilimanjaro or Peak Lenin

Adventure Consultants offers two options for climbing Elbrus. For those who wish to explore some of Russia's most beautiful cultural cities, Trip 1 is 14 days in duration and starts in St Petersburg and finishes in Moscow. Our shorter Trip 2 is 12 days long and starts and finishes in Moscow.

Being relatively high, Elbrus demands respect and we approach this by climbing higher each day during our acclimatisation phase whilst sleeping at lower elevations at night. A cable car takes us up to accommodation at the base of the climb where we learn basic snow and ice techniques from the guides prior to the ascent. The summit day entails climbing long snow slopes with views over the wooded valleys to the surrounding peaks.

‘Goddess of the Sky’: Nepal makes radical Mount Everest changes for the 2024 climbing season

Nepal has taken radical action to address the sorry state of Mount Everest – the sacred summit locals revere as the “Goddess of the sky.”

Inside state’s wild new resort plan

Inside state’s wild new resort plan

Radical new rules to protect Mount Everest are being brought in with its enduring appeal proving to be a disaster for the natural wonder’s once-pristine ground.

The Nepalese community is bracing for hundreds of foreigners to chase the elusive peak this season, and are hoping 2024 will not mirror 2023.

Nepal issued a record 478 climbing permits last year, and adding in one and a half Sherpa support per foreigner, that meant more than 1,200 people pursued the summit last spring.

The season, which runs generally runs between early April and June, saw 17 climbers, including Sherpas, die.

That figure cements the season in infamy as the peak’s second deadliest, topped only by 2018 when 18 climbers died in an earthquake.

The past season was also marred by concern over the state of the sacred summit that locals revere as the “Goddess of the sky.”

Headlines lead with imagery of immense summit queues, desecrated high-altitude camps strewn with trash, biological human waste including excrement and dead bodies, while Sherpas were also captured hauling seemingly ill-prepared climbers from the summit on other occasions at a significant risk to their own wellbeing.

Now, with just days until the world’s elite climbers descend on Kathmandu, Nepalese leaders are scrambling to avoid a repeat.

Khumbu Pasang Rural Municipality, a major authority over Everest, Base Camp and the tourism operations they facilitate, has brought in a suite of new regulations aimed at preserving the natural wonder while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of climbers.

Sherpa remembers forgettable 2023

Tenzi Sherpa, an experienced guide on the world’s highest peak, made global headlines during the 2023 season after the fed-up climber shed light on the sorry state of the sacred mountain.

He is among many Nepalese hoping for improvement this year, telling news.com.au he was glad to see local authorities exercise greater control over the mountain and Base Camp.

“Everest is melting every year, day by day from global warming and a lot of human movement,” he explained.

Concerns over the state of the mountain, including trash, human waste, and dead bodies, have led to new regulations being put in place. Tenzi Sherpa posted a video to Instagram of the mess building up at Camp IV – the last camp before the summit. Picture: Tenzi Sherpa/ Instagram

“This year, some rules have been changed, so it’s going to help prevent human waste.”

He supported a focus on preserving local tradition and employment on the mountain.

“The helicopter shouldn’t be there for supplies because there are many (local) people who supply all the stuff for the expedition,” he said.

“The government is looking for more sufficient tourism by protecting environment and culture and more than that, it is making new infrastructure and new roads to reach Base Camp more easy way.”

Tenzi Sherpa’s 2023 footage showed an abandoned mess at Camp IV – the last stop before the summit.

“The dirtiest camp I have ever seen,” he captioned a video that showed a group of climbers passing through what appears to be an abandoned camp strewn with mountains of unwanted climbing material.

The Khumbu Pasang Rural Municipality has introduced new regulations aimed at preserving the natural wonder while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of climbers. Picture: Tenzi Sherpa/ Instagram

He said the mess was an assortment of tents, empty oxygen bottles, steel bowls, spoons, sanitation pads and paper.

“I feel so sad every time cause I have seen many times doing expedition groups, and companies cut (their) companies logos and leave all the tents for the rest,” Tenzi said in 2023.

“I would like to request to the government to punish companies who leave their trash on mountain … it’s a huge problem we all face.”

As he gears up for the 2024 season, Tenzi Sherpa is hopeful a raft of new locally-led restrictions on climbers will see things improve.

Climbers face major changes this season

The Khumbu Pasang Rural Municipality’s recently announced Base Camp Management Procedure 2024 , introduces significant changes will likely reshape the Everest climbing experience.

One of the most notable changes is the prohibition of business ventures at the Everest Base Camp Area. Bars, spas, bakeries, and cafes will be no longer.

The regulations emphasise the use of local porters and yaks to transport expedition equipment. Picture: Heath Holden

Expedition teams will now be limited to a maximum of 15 members, a measure aimed at reducing overcrowding and minimising environmental impact.

The provision does allow for the enlistment of additional high-altitude and base camp workers as needed, ensuring that expeditions remain well-supported.

To address sanitation concerns, the new rules mandate the set up of designated toilet tents, with strict guidelines on waste disposal. Expedition members venturing beyond the base camp are required to carry back their waste in biodegradable bags, ensuring that the mountains remain unspoilt by human presence.

While trekkers and general visitors are still barred from overnight stays at the Base Camp, provisions have been made to accommodate family members, medical personnel, and sponsors of expedition members. However, strict guidelines regarding space allocation for dining and sleeping quarters have been put in place to prevent overcrowding.

In a nod to Nepalese tradition, the rural municipality emphasises the use of local porters and yaks to transport expedition equipment.

A check-in system has been implemented to track climbers’ progress beyond the Base Camp for safety and accountability. Picture: Lakpa Sherpa

Helicopter transportation is now available despite initially being heavily restricted, subject to approval, with three helipads designated for emergency use at the Base Camp.

To enhance safety and accountability, a check-in system has also been implemented to track climbers’ progress beyond the Base Camp, ensuring timely intervention in case of emergencies.

Climbers will pay a small fee for electronic devices the size of a thumb drive which will be inserted inside their jacket.

Additionally, expedition teams are required to bring back all logistics items and a minimum amount of waste, with agencies receiving a ‘Garbage Clearance Letter’ upon proper waste disposal.

As for the bodies of those who die, which notoriously litter the peak, tour and expedition agencies will be tasked with grim task of retrieving them.

The Himalayan Times reported that: “Tour and expedition agencies will be responsible for retrieving the bodies of their respective high-altitude professionals, including mountain guides, porters, and trekking guides.” Only then will they be given a clearance letter.

However, with just days until the first climbers head to the summit, the BCMP is still being ironed out, and some key points are already being rolled back.

The Nepal Parliament is also working on a new tourism bill, adding the prospect of further or more robust regulation.

Take three ‘poo bags’

As for faeces, climbers ascending Everest will now be expected to collect it in doggy bags and carry it back to base camp, according to new regulations from local officials.

Each person will be given three bags by Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, the body governing most of Everest, to reuse throughout the climb.

Extreme low temperatures mean excrement left on Everest does not fully degrade, with local authorities citing that human stools are visible on rocks, cause widespread odours, and even cause climbers to fall sick.

2023 Everest season headlines lead with imagery of immense summit queues, desecrated high-altitude camps strewn with trash, biological human including excrement and dead bodies. Picture: Tiktok

In February, the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee was hoping to source 8,000 ‘poo bags’ from the US which contain chemicals and powders that solidify human excrement and remove odour.

It’s thought the average climber produces 250 grams of excrement per day and usually spend about two weeks on the higher camps for the summit attempt.

Yaks to Base Camp in jeapordy

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality has already been forced to amended a rule concerning the transportation of materials related to mountain above Syangboche – a two day trek from Base Camp.

Part of the first amendment to the Base Camp Management Procedure of 2024, the regulation stipulated that materials for mountain climbing in the area above Syangboche must not be transported by helicopter.

The FAA Has Issued a Travel Warning Ahead of the Total Solar Eclipse

I n the event that you’ve been living under a rock these past few weeks, we’re fast approaching the next total solar eclipse, colloquially known as the “Great North American Eclipse.” Set to travel “a narrow path of totality from across 13 U.S. states” on April 8, this eclipse really has the people going. Case in point: when Delta announced it would be operating a path of totality flight , it sold out in less than 24 hours — and for good reason. Totality, the stage of a solar eclipse in which the moon completely blocks the sun, happens once every year or two and is typically only visible from Earth’s poles or the middle of the ocean.

That said, it might not make for an altogether smooth day of travel for those with plans to do so. In fact, the FAA has released a travel advisory stating as much. “The purpose of this notice is to inform airmen of the possible impacts to air traffic and airports along the eclipse path during the period April 7, 2024, 1000 UTC through April 10, 2024, 0400 UTC,” it reads.

Delta to Offer a “Path of Totality” Eclipse Flight

The long and short of it is that there may be a higher traffic volume than normal anticipated at airports along the path of the eclipse, which may cause delays — particularly during peak times — though fortunately, no better or worse than the delays we’ve come to associate with other high-travel days.

Aircraft, the notice says, should be prepared for “potential airborne holding” — a tactic designed to delay an inbound aircraft — “reroutes and/or Expect Departure Clearance Times (EDCTs) that may be issued for all domestic Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) arrivals and departures.” Further, practice approaches, touch-and-goes, flight following services and pilot training operations at airports might also be “extremely limited” and “possibly prohibited” during the aforementioned time period.

The advisory applies to airports within 50 nautical miles of either side of the path of the eclipse in the United States, so only travelers coming from or going to Texas, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and eastern Canada stand to be impacted.

What the notice doesn’t warn against, however, is looking straight at the eclipse (even if the sun is totally covered by the moon) from the plane. For the uninitiated, in the absence of proper eye protection like eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers, you run the risk of burning your retinas by looking at it. So be prepared for a little more congestion than an average Monday, subsequent delays and definitely do not stare directly at the eclipse.

Germany celebrates turnaround as confidence grows before hosting Euro 2024

Associated press.

everest travels and tours

BERLIN, MARCH 28

What a difference a game makes.

Real madrid midfielder kroos agrees to play for germany ahead of home euro 2024, leroy sané banned for 3 germany friendlies in blow to host's euro 2024 preparations.

The pessimism and frustration shrouding Germany's soccer team ahead of this summer's European Championship has been lifted and replaced by confidence that the host can now win the tournament.

All it took was a win over France for the Germans to cast aside their doubts.

"Everything fits together," former Germany great Lothar Matthäus said after the France game, which was followed up by a 2-1 win over the Netherlands on Tuesday. "The team not only can be European champion, it must be European champion!"

It's a remarkable turnaround for a team that had lost its previous games against Austria and Turkey in November, and which had only two wins from its previous 10 matches before beating France 2-0 in Lyon on Saturday.

"Something has come out of the last week that wasn't there before," said Toni Kroos, who came out of international retirement to rejoin the team for Euro 2024. "There's a confidence in our actions and I hope we take that with us toward the tournament because then we can be confident of always doing well."

Germany needed to dig deep to beat the Dutch in Frankfurt after Joey Veerman's fourth-minute goal for the visitors, but goals from Maximilian Mittelstädt and Niclas Füllkrug consolidated the team's new-found bullishness and rewarded coach Julian Nagelsmann for some brave calls in squad selection.

Nagelsmann had called up six new faces and coaxed the 34-year-old Kroos back from retirement.

The Real Madrid star's return had arguably had the greatest impact because of his leadership qualities and a calm composure that helped settle the players around him. Kroos began by setting up Florian Wirtz for Germany's fastest ever goal after just seven seconds in the win in France, then delivered both corners that led to the goals against the Netherlands.

"I know that the team is coming from a really tough time," Kroos said. "What's good is that few took that baggage with them, that it was left behind through the relatively radical changes."

Kroos' return allowed İlkay Gündoğan to push further forward, Wirtz and fellow youngster Jamal Musiala starred on the wings, and in-form Arsenal forward Kai Havertz started up front. Bayer Leverkusen's tough-tackling Robert Andrich made his second and third Germany appearances beside Kroos in midfield.

Nagelsmann named the same starting lineup for the Netherlands as he had for France, and - barring injuries - it will not change much from the team that will start Euro 2024 against Scotland in Munich on June 14.

"The spirit of the team is very good. It's a good mix," Nagelsmann said. "I think we've found a good mix of players who can take on the role of not playing and still give their all when they come in."

Of the new faces, three were from Stuttgart, which is playing some of the best soccer in the Bundesliga this season. Mittelstädt, the Stuttgart left back, made his Germany debut against France and starred in both games. A year ago, he was fighting relegation with Hertha Berlin.

"Everyone said, he hasn't played any international game, maybe it's too early," Nagelsmann said of Mittelstädt. "He's a very good player, a lot of ambition, a lot of power and also a top guy. He's good for us."

Nagelsmann made a point of selecting in-form players for their confidence, while omitting the likes of Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka and a host of Borussia Dortmund players.

Nagelsmann paid tribute to Leipzig defenders David Raum and Benjamin Henrichs for their impact as substitutes, as well as Pascal Groß in midfield, while Füllkrug, another substitute, was the one who scored the winner against the Netherlands.

All of the players, whether starters and substitutes, displayed a bite and commitment that had been lacking in previous Germany performances. Antonio Rüdiger and Jonathan Tah formed a formidable partnership in central defense, while Wirtz and Musiala in particular provided moments of inspiration.

"I think football is always about confirming things. A one-hit wonder is always possible," Nagelsmann said before Tuesday's match. "In the end it's about confirming the path that we're on. And I also said before I don't want to be infected by this hysteria. But I'm also not one to put the brakes on euphoria."

Nagelsmann was only given a contract through Euro 2024 after he was appointed successor to the fired Hansi Flick in September, but he's likely to have it extended before the tournament starts.

Germany next faces Ukraine and Greece for its final tournament warmups before its opening game against Scotland in Munich on June 14. Nagelsmann's team then plays Hungary in Stuttgart on June 19 and Switzerland in Frankfurt on June 23.

March 25 Moscow concert hall attack

By Antoinette Radford and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Putin says Moscow attack was carried out by "radical Islamists." But he also blames Ukraine

From CNN's Mariya Knight in Atlanta, Darya Tarasova and Sugam Pokharel in London

Russian President Vladimir Putin delivers a statement on Monday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that the brutal attack at a Moscow concert hall on Friday was carried out by “radical Islamists.”

“We know that the crime was committed by radical Islamists, whose ideology the Islamic world itself has been fighting for centuries,” Putin said.

He also again suggested that Ukraine was to blame for the attack.

“It is also necessary to answer the question why the terrorists tried to go to Ukraine after committing a crime, who was waiting for them there? It is clear that those who support the Kyiv regime do not want to be accomplices of terror and sponsors of terrorism, but there are really a lot of questions,” he said in a meeting via videoconference with government officials, special services and law enforcement agencies on measures taken after the terrorist attack, according to the Kremlin.

“We know by whose hands this atrocity was committed against Russia and its people, and we are interested in who the instigator is,” Putin said.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the massacre and released graphic footage showing the incident – but the Kremlin has alleged, without evidence, that the perpetrators planned to flee to Ukraine. Kyiv has vehemently denied involvement and called the Kremlin’s claims “absurd.”

Putin on Saturday also claimed that a “window” had been prepared for the attackers to escape to Ukraine. He did not provide evidence.

The post has been updated with more details from Putin's remarks.

Death toll in Moscow concert hall attack rises to 139, Russian official says

From CNN’s Dasha Tarasova in London

People place flowers at a makeshift memorial in front of the Crocus City concert hall on Monday.

Two more people have been confirmed dead following a brutal attack at a Moscow concert hall on Friday, taking the death toll to at least 139 killed, a senior Russian official said on Monday.

“Initial results of the investigation indicate that the attack was carefully planned and prepared,” Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, said in a live TV broadcast.

US says that it warned Russia in early March of possible terror attack despite ambassador's denial

From CNN’s Michael Conte

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller speaks to the media on Monday.

The US State Department said Monday that the United States had warned Russia in early March about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow “potentially targeting large gatherings, including concerts."

Spokesperson Matthew Miller was responding to a denial by the Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov that Moscow received any warning.

“We gave them that private warning consistent with our duty to warn ... when we see or when we gather intelligence of terrorist attacks or potential terrorist attacks,” Miller said at a press briefing.

He noted the United States on March 7 warned US citizens to avoid large gatherings in Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had described the security warning as “provocative” and “outright blackmail” before the attack.

“It was because of that warning that we passed on to the Russian government that we issued a security warning on March 7, where we again said to US citizens that we had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow… potentially targeting large gatherings including concerts,” Miller added.

Here's what you need to know about the Moscow concert hall attack that killed 137 people

From CNN staff

Flowers are left near the Crocus City concert hall on Monday.

All four suspects in the Crocus City concert hall attack case have been remanded into pre-trial detention until May 22. They are charged with committing a terrorist act, according to the courts of general jurisdiction of the city of Moscow, which under the Russian Criminal Code is punishable by up to life imprisonment.

Three of the defendants pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS.

All four are from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic, and had been in Russia on either temporary or expired visas.

On Monday afternoon, authorities said they had identified an additional three people who they believed were involved in the attack — two brothers and a father.

Friday's attack killed at least 137 people. The attack is Russia's deadliest in two decades .

Catch up on the latest developments:

  • Day of mourning: Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Sunday a day of national mourning for the 137 victims in Friday's attack .
  • Authorities work to identify victims: Procedures to identify those killed in the attack have begun, the city’s Department of Health said, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. The Russian Investigative Committee said 62 bodies had been identified so far, adding that "for the remaining victims, genetic examinations are being carried out to establish their identities."
  • Fighting terrorism in Syria and Turkey: Putin held separate calls with his Turkish and Syrian counterparts, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad, on Saturday and promised closer cooperation in fighting terrorism following the attack, according to a Kremlin readout.
  • Russian Embassy says no warnings from US: The Russian Embassy in Washington says it did not receive any warnings about a potential attack in Moscow from the US. Last week, Putin dismissed warnings by the US embassy in Russia that there could be attacks on large groups.
  • Putin links attack to Ukraine: Putin said the main suspects arrested planned to flee into Ukraine. Ukraine has denied any connection. The UK warned that Russia was creating a "smokescreen of propaganda."

Russian social media channels show apparent torture of Crocus City suspects

From CNN’s Nathan Hodge

Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, a suspect in the deadly terrorist attack in Moscow, sits behind a glass wall of an enclosure during a court appearance on Sunday. His ear was heavily bandaged.

Video footage and still images have appeared on Russian social media that appear to show the violent interrogation of several of the men alleged to have taken part in the deadly terror attack on a concert hall outside Moscow Friday.

One video appears to show one of the suspects, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, being held on the ground while having part of his ear cut off by a camouflage-wearing interrogator. Rachabalizoda later appeared in court with a heavily bandaged ear.

The Grey Zone, a pro-Kremlin Telegram channel, published a still photograph that claims to show the electrocution of one of the detained suspects.

Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of Russian state propaganda network RT, posted a video that appears to show the interrogation of another suspect, Shamsidin Fariduni, who is shown stammering and shaking as he is questioned by interrogators off camera. Fariduni subsequently appeared in court with a bruised face.

CNN asked the Kremlin about the “visible signs of violence” committed against the suspects, but spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment.

Russian Investigative Committee asks court to detain three more in connection with concert hall attack

From CNN's Tim Lister and Darya Tarasova

The Russian Investigative Committee says it has established that more people were involved in Friday's Crocus City terror attack beyond the four men alleged to have carried out the attack.

“According to the investigation, in order to commit a terrorist act, Shamsidin Fariduni recruited Aminchon Islomov into the organized group no later than January 2024, and Dilovar Islomov no later than March 11, 2024,” the Investigative Committee said on Telegram.

The three individuals are two brothers and their father, Russian state media agency TASS said. Investigators are asking the Basmanny Court of Moscow to choose a preventive measure for the three defendants, the court told TASS.

“Three more materials were received regarding the accused Islomov Aminchon Isroilovich, Islomov Dilovar Isroilovich, as well as the suspect Islomov IsroilIbragimovich,” the court said, according to TASS. Fariduni was one of those detained in Bryansk Saturday. Both Aminchon and Dilovar Islomov appeared in Basmanny court in Moscow Monday. State news agency TASS said that Dilovar Islomov is a citizen of the Russian Federation and works as a taxi driver, citing court documents.

Russian state news agency RIA said Dilovar Islomov “owned the Renault car in which the terrorists fled the crime scene, sold it in February, and the compulsory motor liability insurance remained on him,” citing a source familiar with the situation.

Here's what to know about ISIS-K, the group linked to the Moscow concert hall terror attack

From CNN's Jessie Yeung

A view shows the burned out Crocus City hall venue, the scene of Friday's attack outside Moscow, on Saturday, March 23.

ISIS, also known as the Islamic State group, claimed responsibility for  Friday’s deadly assault  on a concert venue in Moscow, releasing graphic footage purporting to show its gunmen carrying out what was Russia’s worst terror attack in decades.

Here's what we know about the group:

When was it formed?: ISIS-K was formed in 2015 and has been active in  Afghanistan , Pakistan and Iran. It is a branch of ISIS, the terror group that emerged in Syria and Iraq and, at its peak, controlled a huge stretch of territory. Five years since the  fall of ISIS’ self-proclaimed caliphate  across Iraq and Syria, the group has morphed into a terror network with cells spread around the world, including in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

How is it linked to ISIS? The connection between the groups is not entirely clear. The affiliates share an ideology and tactics, but the depth of their relationship – such as the chain of command and control – has never been fully established.

What is its ideology?: Like its parent organization, ISIS-K aims to create a “pure Islamic state,” according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) – describing the group’s vision of a “global, transnational caliphate” governed by Sharia law.

Why attack Russia?: ISIS has a longstanding animosity against Russia and Putin, several experts told CNN. “Russia has been at the top or near the top of the list of ISIS for many years,” said Daniel Byman, director of Georgetown University’s security studies program.

Russians return to site of Moscow terror attack to offer condolences

From CNN's Matthew Chance and Katharina Krebs in Moscow

A mans lays flowers at a makeshift memorial outside Crocus City hall on Monday.

Four days after Friday's Moscow terror attack, some 200 people gathered at the site of the attack Monday morning, offering condolences to the victims, a CNN team in Moscow reports.

While the crowd was much smaller than the numbers who were at the Crocus City hall on Sunday, a steady flow of people were bringing flowers and stuffed toys to the scene, according to the CNN team. Candles were also laid next to the memorial.

A Russian Red Cross tent is set up at the location to provide psychological help. The CNN team said volunteers are helping people with directions on where to pick up belongings or cars left on Friday. The main entrance of the Crocus hall remains barricaded off, with police buses and emergency vehicles clearing rubble. Search operations are still ongoing.

The victims: Moscow's Department of Health published an updated list of those still hospitalized in the capital's medical institutions after the attack, consisting of 76 names.

At least 137 people died in the attack after gunmen opened fire on people inside the hall, and set fire to the building. Of them, at least three were children. President Vladimir Putin declared Sunday a day of national mourning, vowing to punish the perpetrators and expressing condolences to those who had lost loved ones.

Tajikistan reiterates readiness to cooperate with Russia against terrorism after Moscow concert attack

From CNN's Anna Chernova

Following the identification of the four men charged with carrying out the attack in Moscow on Friday as Tajik nationals, Tajikistan has reiterated its readiness to fight terrorism together with Russia.

The Russian state news agency TASS published video Monday showing Tajik Prime Minister Kokhir Rasulzoda writing a note in the book of condolences at the Russian embassy in Dushanbe.

State-run RIA Novosti reported on its Telegram channel that Tajikistan is providing assistance to the Russian investigation “in the case of the terrorist attack in Crocus,” citing a source in Tajikistan’s special services. It reported that a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry had confirmed that “Tajikistan specialists are providing assistance to investigators from Russia in connection with the arrest of citizens of the republic in the case of a terrorist attack.”

On Sunday, the Kremlin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had spoken with his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon, who had expressed “deep condolences and feelings of solidarity with the Russian people in connection with the death of civilians as a result of the vile terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall."

“During the conversation, Vladimir Putin and Emomali Rahmon noted that special services and relevant departments of Russia and Tajikistan are working closely in the field of countering terrorism, and this work will be intensified,” the Kremlin said.
