Senior Day Trip Tours in North Carolina

Standard Excursions

Custom tours, senior center outings, north carolina must-sees.

North Carolina, known for its retirement-friendly environment (it ranks 34th among the best states for retirement, according to MoneyRates.com) and a plethora of recreational options, is a top choice for senior day trips. Whether organized by private companies or senior centers, these tours offer opportunities to enjoy musicals, plays, shopping, wine tastings, and even casino visits.

With the several day trip destinations available in North Carolina for seniors, it’s important to take a deeper look at some of the options to compare and contrast based on your needs.

‌ Globe Treks (globetreks.com) ‌ arranges day trips departing from Hendersonville, conveniently picking you up and dropping you off at your residence. Their itineraries include visits to theaters, musicals, and operas in various cities across the state, often with breakfasts / lunches included before the show. Enjoy the comfort of luxury motorcoaches equipped with air conditioning and heat for transportation. The fees cover event tickets, meals, and taxes. In Winston-Salem, ‌ Travel on Tours (travelontoursllc.com) ‌ caters to small groups with motorcoach travel to nearby cities, providing meals and event tickets.

‌ Day Trips & Tours (daytripsandtours.com) ‌ specializes in creating customized trips for senior citizens, as well as schools and other organizations. Their monthly trips feature visits to casinos, scenic spots, and historic sites like the Biltmore Estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Comfortable 48-passenger buses with reclining seats, restrooms, air conditioning, and heat ensure a pleasant journey. Each bus is equipped with DVD players and television monitors for interactive entertainment. Snacks and soft drinks are included in the tour prices. Additionally, the company arranges visits to the Grove Park Inn Resort in Asheville for the National Gingerbread Competition and to the Rudy Theatre in Selma for musical productions.

‌ The North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services (ncdhhs.gov) ‌ offers a downloadable list of senior centers throughout the state, some of which host day trips. ‌ The Fayetteville Cumberland Parks & Recreation Senior Center (agingactivelyfay.com) ‌ stands out with its active programs. The staff arranges guided trips to various destinations, such as the North Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro and Christmas musicals that include a wine tasting and dinner. Other trips include annual visits to Southern Supreme Specialties, a mail-order gourmet food company in Bear Creek. Shopping trips around the holidays include visits to the Streets of Southpoint in Durham. All trips depart from the Senior Center in Fayetteville with transportation provided via mini-bus. Advance registration is encouraged because the trips fill up quickly.

Most tours include a small gratuity for your driver and a guide. If you feel that the service during the tour was exceptional, you can personally give the driver and guide an additional tip. Bring a small camera to take photos of your trip. For day trips, carry sunglasses for use once you step off the bus into the bright sunshine. A hat comes in handy to ward off sunburn during outdoor events.

Explore the vibrant city of Charlotte, historic sites in Greensboro, or the charm of Charleston during your day trips in North Carolina. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where waterfalls and state parks offer outdoor adventures. Discover the wonders of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, go kayaking in Cape Fear, and enjoy the coastal splendor of the Outer Banks. Don't miss the chance to visit the captivating Biltmore Estate or the enchanting towns of Cherokee and Boone. Experience the picturesque Lake Lure and explore the wonders of the national forests. With plenty of itineraries and options available, North Carolina offers unforgettable experiences for senior travelers.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Tips for Senior Travelers in North Carolina

The National Park Service (NPS) offers an America the Beautiful -- National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass -- Senior Pass (formerly the Golden Age Passport ), which gives seniors 62 years or older lifetime entrance to all properties administered by the NPS -- national parks, monuments, historic sites, recreation areas, and national wildlife refuges -- for a one-time processing fee of $10. The pass must be purchased in person at any NPS facility that charges an entrance fee. Besides free entry, the America the Beautiful pass also offers a 50% discount on some federal-use fees. For more information, go to www.nps.gov/fees_passes.htm or call the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which issues the passes, at tel. 888/275-8747.

Nearly all major U.S. hotel and motel chains now offer seniors a discount, so ask for the reduction when you make the reservation; there may be restrictions during peak days. Then be sure to carry proof of your age (driver's license, passport, and so on) when you check in. Among the chains that offer the best discounts are Marriott Hotels (tel. 800/228-9290 ) for those 62 and older, and La Quinta Inns (tel. 800/531-5900 ) for ages 55 and older.

Members of AARP, 601 E St. NW, Washington, DC 20049 (tel. 888/687-2277; www.aarp.org), get discounts on hotels, airfares, and car rentals. AARP offers members a wide range of benefits, including AARP The Magazine and a monthly newsletter. Anyone older than 50 can join.

Many reliable agencies and organizations target the 50-plus market. Elderhostel (tel. 877/426-5768; www.elderhostel.org) arranges study programs for those 55 and over.

Recommended publications offering travel resources and discounts for seniors include the quarterly magazine Travel 50 & Beyond (www.travel50andbeyond.com) and Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can't Get Unless You're Over 50 (2009), by Joann Rattner Heilman.

Seniors may want to contact the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (tel. 803/252-7734; www.seniorresourcesinc.org). When you're sightseeing or attending entertainment events, always inquire about senior discounts.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

trips for seniors over 60 near north carolina

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. 7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

An epic, whirlwind adventure! What an amazing trip! Our guide was Dylan and he was terrific. He was smart, informative, and funny. He customized our week based on our group - making sure we all had a say and got to experience these magical places in our own ways as much as reasonably possible. He even saved someone’s life from another van by doing the Heimlich Maneuver! We did the camping option. We had envisioned relaxing evenings by the campfire but that only happened a couple of times. Usually we were scrambling to set up camp in the dark and then get packed and ready to roll out with the sunrise so we could pack in as much adventure as possible. So many incredible moments along the journey - our van fam was wonderful, pizza at sunset on the Grand Canyon’s south rim, a night hike in Aches with shooting stars and the Milky Way, s’mores on our last night with the whole group, and Dylan’s playlists for every occasion… we came home exhausted and happy, with multiple bucket list items checked off. Highly recommend!

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour

Outstanding tour and tour guide. The trip was well organized, with half of the guests camping and half of the guests lodging. John, our tour guide, kept us informed and entertained us during the entire trip. Only criticism is that we had the same lunch just about every day. Highly recommend.

Canadian Rockies Tour

Canadian Rockies

Fantastic itinerary and a great 2 weeks in the Canadian Rockies. The trip covers all of the 'must see' destinations but the real highlights were the places we wouldn't of found ourselves including an amazing hike at Mt Robson (with a very cold swim in the glacial lake at the top!) and the overnight canoe trip in Wells Grey NP which was a highlight for the entire group. If you enjoy camping, pitching in to prepare meals and the great outdoors then I highly recommend this trip to see the Rockies!

Canada\'s Rockies (Base, 8 Days) Tour

Canada's Rockies (Base, 8 Days)

Let me state from the outset that our Journey through the Clouds on board of Rocky Mountaineer was a very pleasant experience. We would definitely recommend it to a friend. (And we already have!). However, this review is focused on the areas that need improvement. It starts with a mess. The train terminal in Vancouver is obviously not equipped for the number of passengers waiting to board the train. There is a severe shortage of chairs. The chairs or sofas that are there are more suited for a large dentist office, not for the train terminal. The poor passengers, most of them in their 50’s and 60’s are searching helplessly around for something to sit on. In the meantime all the management has to do is visit any airport boarding gate. The solution there is vivid and simple. Our departure was festive and joyous. The entire staff of Rocky Mountaineer lined up to wave us goodbye. But then, I discovered myself sitting at the very end of the car next to a big man. I couldn’t see my wife and daughter sitting in the row in front of me on those bulky but not very comfortable chairs. My neighbor and I found ourselves embarrassingly jostling for the elbow space. As I said, the seats are massive but are not as comfortable as those designed for the long-haul airline flights. While transcontinental flights take 12-14 hours, here, passengers will sit in their seats for 2 – 3 days. I complained and they moved us to another car where we were sitting much closer upfront and I was seated in the same raw as my family. We have made this reservation a year in advance. One would think that having made it so early we should have had better seating arrangements. A little more consideration for the family members, a little extra consideration for those who signed up first and finally a better software allowing people to change their seats (just like the airlines) would go a long way. Finally, let me address the major problem: inadequate dining room and kitchen facilities. Because there is a severe shortage of restaurant tables combined with an acute shortage of kitchen facilities we, the passengers are divided into two groups. Half of the car has breakfast at 9, the second – at 11. Likewise lunch: one group eats at 12, the other at 2 PM. The shortage of dining cars aside, the kitchen is very small and can’t keep up with the dining room demand. So, by the time I get my breakfast I am on the fourth cup of coffee and even that is already cold. This presents a particularly big problem with lunch. Usually, I go to bed early and get up early (4 AM). So, if I finish my lunch at 4 PM, I will not be ready to eat dinner at 7. Because I refuse to go to bed with a full stomach, if I don’t start dinner by 6:30 – 7, I will not eat dinner that day at all. That said the quality of food aboard the train was excellent. My compliments to the Chef and his team! Coming from me it’s a big compliment. I am a foodie and would routinely travel anywhere for good food, be it Lion or Bologna. To summarize, Rocky Mountaineer is worth the money. It’s a great way to spend a vacation. Even your teenagers would like it. Yet, there is a lot to improve. Being from the US, I hope that soon someone would take this idea to the US Rockies and make a fortune.

Rockies Premium Tour from Vancouver (34 Seats)

The itinerary was very structured and organised. Got to see many spectacular sights of the Rockies. Had an amazing time with the group (just a nice size) and we got to go to Banff, Jasper, saw many waterfalls and mountain ranges. Enjoyed myself thoroughly. Thank you to Luke for being such a cool, chill and wonderful tour guide throughout the trip! He really made sure we all had a great time, single-handedly driving us long distances to the different destinations and also helping out with our luggages. He also recommended us great sights to see and provided insights on some of the history of the Rockies and tidbits about the stuff we saw in our tour.

Heart of the Canadian Rockies with Alaska Cruise

A well organised tour, fulfilling our expectations of seeing some lovely scenery and also a little wildlife e.g. bears. As for scenery, the Canadian Rockies and Alaska's Glacier Bay were highlightsfor us. Of course it helps to have good weather - going up in the gondola of Banff's sulphur mountain is recommended for views: we had good weather that day but had the views been obscured by low cloud it would have been a different matter. Altogether a great experience.

Mighty 5 From Las Vegas

If you're looking for a reason to visit the American West, Southwest Adventure Tours' Utah Mighty 5 tour is it. The scenery in each of the five parks is incredible beyond description, and the whole trip is just super well-run - from the sights to the amenities, everything was wonderful. One of the best parts of all was our guide, Simone Kuzma, who was just a wealth of fascinating information about the landscape and a ton of fun to boot. The effort she put into making the tour a success was evident at every turn. I highly recommend this trip, and you'll be extra lucky if you get Simone.

Rockies Western Canada Iconic Sites: 7-Day Tour

I went on this tour with my mum and we both had the best time. I especially would like to thank Richelle, our amazing guide. If I ever do another tour with Discover Canada, I want Richelle to be my guide. She is knowledgeable, accommodating, respectful and very friendly (plus she is an incredibly skilled driver). She has a vast knowledge of Canadian nature and history. We learnt lots of interesting facts along the trip about Canadian flora and fauna as well as the history of the land. She is an experienced traveller herself and she made sure that we got everywhere before the crowds arrived and got the best views. The trip has definitely surpassed my expectations. The beauty of the Rockies is impossible to describe, you have to see and feel it for yourself. We definitely got lucky with our guide, the weather and the group of fellow travellers who were an enthusiastic bunch. I hope to come back to see more of Canada in the future

Reviews of North America Tours for Seniors

We thoroughly enjoyed the 7-day tour of the US southwest . We love the destinations included in the tour, every place we visited is on our bucket list. I wanted to pinch myself every day that I visited those iconic and beautiful places as shown in my photos below. We enjoyed all the extra, optional experiences that were suggested by the tour guide. They added more fun to the tour. The Hummer tour in Moab, Utah was one of the optional experiences and it was a blast! Not only it’s fun, you get to see the amazing scenery during the sunset. One previous review mentioned he or she was forced to participate in the Navajo taco dinner in Monument Valley. That comment is not true. You have a choice not to do that and the guide can make a different arrangement for you. The optional Navajo taco dinner is one of the highlights of the tour that we will remember for a long time. It would be a shame not to have this cultural experience when you get to meet Navajo people when you are in the Navajo Nation! Our tour guide, John did a fantastic job. He was full of enthusiasm and energy. He kept the tour well organized and always provided information we needed. We highly recommend the tour.
We real enjoyed our time away.

7 Fun Things for Seniors to Do in the Raleigh area

trips for seniors over 60 near north carolina

Welcome to the Triangle, originally named for the trio of significant research universities of NC State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but perhaps more widely used to describe cities of Raleigh and Durham and the town of Chapel Hill.

As the universities have grown and birthed major industrial and technological centers, the cities and town around them have also experienced a boom in entertainment, cultural events, restaurants, and more. In the Triangle, there is something for everyone.

Whether you enjoy big name Broadway spectacles, a night out at the symphony, or an evening with your favorite comic, the Triangle has you covered. The Durham Performing Arts Center features the Suntrust Broadway Series as well as concerts and events by many well-known musicians, comedians, and artists. The Carolina Theater is a performing arts center and cinema in downtown Durham. Playmakers Repertory Company is a theatre group in residence at the University of NC at Chapel Hill. The Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh houses multiple venues and showcases numerous plays, shows, and events, including NC Symphony concerts. The Red Hat Amphitheatre is the most recent addition to the downtown Raleigh landscape offering outdoor concerts throughout the year. Raleigh Little Theater is a community theater producing 10-11 productions annually as well as providing educational instruction in the theatrical arts.

With so many people relocating to the Triangle every year, there are an abundance of restaurants. Triangle Restaurant Week is an annual celebration where many of the top restaurants offer prix fixe menus to showcase their best recipes. Raleigh is home to Ashley Christensen , the 2019 James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef, and her 5 award winning restaurants, including Beasley’s Chicken and Honey and Poole’s Diner . The Angus Barn has been a Raleigh icon since 1960, serving in-house aged steaks, fresh seafood, local grown vegetables and homemade desserts prepared by Iron Chef America winner, Walter J. Royal, and his staff. Watts Grocery in Durham is a neighborhood shop transformed into a restaurant, serving up NC cuisine made with local ingredients. Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery in Chapel Hill, or TOPO as it has come to be known, offers local dishes and beer brewed on-site.

In addition to programs offered at the universities ( Great Decisions and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute e.g.), there are numerous museums and educational centers to explore. In downtown Raleigh, one can visit the NC Museum of History and NC Museum of Natural Sciences for free (though a charge may apply for special exhibits). Located a short drive away is the NC Museum of Art where the landscapes on the walls inside the museum are as stirring as the landscape of the grounds surrounding the museum. In Durham, the Museum of Life and Science boasts 84 acres of things to discover, including one of the largest butterfly houses on the east coast, while the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill takes guests on a journey to the stars.

The Triangle is rich in parks and greenways for walking, hiking, biking, and more. The Capital Area Greenway Trail System connects many of Raleigh’s parks, while the American Tobacco Trail crosses through Durham and surrounding areas. The Town of Chapel Hill also maintains several trails and greenways. If you enjoy camping as well as hiking and biking, you might visit William B. Umstead Park or Jordan Lake State Recreation Area . Are hiking and biking too extreme? A stroll through the Sarah P. Duke Gardens at Duke University may be more relaxing.

In addition to the collegiate sporting events of the three NCAA Division I universities in the area, the Triangle also offers a professional hockey team , a professional soccer team , and a minor league baseball team .

If you enjoy hunting for special treasures or bargain deals, there is plenty of shopping to be had in the Triangle. The State Farmers Market is open daily. Not only can you find seasonal fruits and veggies, you can also sample meats, cheeses, bakery items, and N.C. wines.  There is a wide variety of specialty shops with old-fashioned candies, N.C. gifts, soaps, and lotions. The Raleigh Flea Market located at the State Fairgrounds is open every weekend except when the NC State Fair is in town in October. With more than 600 vendors, you’re sure to find some excellent deals!

While there are many things to see and do in the Triangle, the hustle and bustle of such a populous area may encourage you to seek a weekend getaway. Luckily the Triangle is just a few hours drive from the beach to the east or the mountains to the west. North Carolina’s collective beaches are known as the Crystal Coast , with lighthouses , aquariums , and mouth-watering seafood waiting to be enjoyed. The fall is an especially lovely time of the year to explore the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains when the leaves are changing colors. A visit to the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC is beautiful any time of the year, but the candlelight Christmas celebration adds a bit of magic and wonder.

Historic walking tours are typically offered April to November, and 17th century houses that belonged to some of the original 101 Mayflower passengers are now museums and charge no or modest entry fees. The Spanish island of Tenerife attracts seniors with year-round warm weather, an outstanding diversity of landscapes, and good value, especially now that the euro is more or less on par with the dollar — prices generally are lower here than on the continent. The island's quality hotels, roads, and medical facilities make it a well-equipped and appealing alternative to more popular European destinations, and travelers can reach the island from more than 180 cities. Round-trip packages from New York City, including four nights at a 5-star property, start at $900 a person. Go in spring and fall to avoid the crowds.

Ditch the big-city excitement  and head upstate to the serenely magnificent Adirondacks. Whether you're active or sedentary, winter and summer sports, cultural events, shopping, and more can keep you busy for days on end. Several communities host winter carnivals, and miles of scenic byways and country roads beckon adventurous drivers. Unparalleled leaf peeping  in the largest publicly protected area in the continental United States draws crowds in the fall. Hop aboard a Trailways bus and save 10% on the fare just for being a senior. Lodging discounts for seniors are available as well. Blue Mountain Rest in Adirondack State Park, for example, shaves up to 35% off the weekend rate for a longer weekday stay for those over 62 and paying cash.

Estes Park, Colorado, During Summer, Big Thompson River in the Foreground with Trees and Shopping Behind

Estes Park, Colorado

There's plenty to keep active seniors busy at the YMCA of the Rockies , which stretches over more than 800 acres surrounded on three sides by Rocky Mountain National Park: archery lessons, swimming, a rock climbing wall, ropes challenge courses, zip lining, a craft and design center (think ceramics, jewelry, and basket weaving), fishing, ice skating in winter, miniature golf, horseback riding, and campfires with s'mores. You can volunteer to work at the property — as a laundry attendant or sales clerk, for example — in exchange for room and board and access to most activities. A weeklong stay in early May can cost as little as $109 a night; YMCA members get a $15 nightly discount.

Palm Trees and Colorful Buildings Line the Historic District, Mazatlán, Mexico, Brick Road

Mazatlán, Mexico

Cancún may attract the party crowd, but snowbirds have been seeking out the sun in Mazatlán, which is a good fit for budget-minded seniors. All-inclusive resorts are plentiful and even some of the higher-rated hotels can cost less than $160 a person per night. The beaches are beautiful and there are historic attractions to explore, as well as hiking, bird-watching, and all sorts of water sports.
