Must Do in Queenstown/Arrowtown

What an experience! My fiancé and I did the Gibbston trail to the wineries and it was incredible. Takes about 90 minutes each way or so to complete the trail but it is well worth it. Stunning views of the landscape and rivers. The bridge crossings are hold your breath exciting and the course is easy to follow along. Absolutely would do this again and recommend to all who travel to Queenstown/Arrowrown.

Fantastic Cycling experience in Arrowtown

We were extremely lucky to just arrive at Better by Bike in Arrowtown and pick up the last two ebikes for a ride out to the Vineyards and back. Having never ridden one of these modern mountain bikes I really enjoyed the ability to zoom up along in "TURBO" setting engaging the warp drive to get up really steep hills! The experience of cycling on a safe pathway , surrounded by mountains and falling leaves was fantastic. The 20 KM out to the Gibbston valley took us all of the two hours promised and more, as we stopped at every corner to take pictures of the beautiful countryside. Having already visited most of the Wineries in the valley we opted to ride the dangerous-looking Chard vineyard road. It was great...so easy on the ebike and the exhilarating cycle around steep drop corners was fantastic. Then the wine at the end of the two-kilometer road was even better. The return cycle seemed to be twice as fast as the outgoing one, probably due to less photography happening. All in all a wonderful experience. Thanks to Meg at Better by bike for all her help! I cannot recommend this experience enough as it was fantastic. OK, you have to put in a bit of effort but the reward was worth it!

Great family adventure from Arrowtown to Bungy bridge

Great bikes, good guidance, lovely ride

Great service

Best Bike Shop

Great Experience

Great bikes at short notice

Fun for all

What is included in the bike hire?

We provide bikes, helmets, maps, backpacks/panniers, and full trail support.

What is “Trail Support”?

As our rides are not guided, we have included trail support so if you happen to have any issues out on the trails for example a puncture, we are only a phone call away.

Will I be riding on busy roads?

Absolutely not! Both of our shops are located conveniently on the trails. The Queenstown trail network is 130km long connecting Queenstown, Kelvin Peninsula, Lake Hayes, Arrowtown, and the Gibbston Wine Region. There are only a few very short sections along sealed back-country and farm roads, however these are very quiet, rural areas with virtually no traffic.

What happens if I want to cancel my booking?

Our 24 hour cancellation policy allows for great flexibility when planning your trip. If you contact us at least 24 hours before your booking date we can transfer to a new date at no cost, or cancel your booking for a full refund.

In cases of inclement weather (very rare) we will make a call on the day whether it is acceptable riding conditions or not. If the ride can not go ahead we will try to reschedule or refund the trip.

How much is the return shuttle?

The rates of our shuttle vary depending on where you are going, they start at $35 per person, with a minimum of two people.

There is a flat rate for a family (up to 2 adults and 3 kids) of $100.

I think I might want a shuttle, do I have to book it?

We are very flexible with our shuttles. You do not have to book them – you can even ring to organize one while you’re out on the trail! If you think you might want one, just let us know at check-in.

If you know you will want one, you can book it alongside your bike – just look for the transfers option to add on at the checkout.

Can the return shuttle drop me at my accommodation?

With a standard shuttle, we will pick you up off the trail and return you to the Better By Bike shop where you started. If you have specific requests, we may be able to accommodate them if you call/email in advance.

Alternatively, we have a transport-included package for $205, where transport both ways between your accommodation and Arrowtown is included with your e-bike hire. If you wish to be collected from the Gibbston Wineries, an additional $30 fee applies.

Can I take the bikes in my own car?

No sorry, due to damage that has been caused in the past, our bikes can only be transported by staff on our purpose built bike trailers.

How long does the battery last?

This depends on what power setting you are using, cyclists weight and how good you are at using the gears. Rest assured we have the top of brand Bosch batteries, so they will take you as far as can be on any electric bike. We will explain all of this pre ride.

Where is the best place to park?

In Arrowtown there is a free public car-park right by the shop. At the Hilton Jetty you can either use the paid parking option offered by the Hilton, or you can catch the Ferry across the lake from town or the Frankton Marina.

Experience some of New Zealand's most scenic landscapes by bike. Queenstown is the gateway to six of New Zealand's Great Rides, making it the perfect base for your next biking adventure.

Queenstown is your basecamp for cycling in the lower South Island. Six of New Zealand’s Great Rides are accessible from Queenstown, five in the Otago region  and one in Southland . There’s no better way to explore our superb nature and scenery than on two wheels.

Our sunny alpine climate is ideal for bike rides and there are accessible trails everywhere for all ages and abilities. Whether you’re in the mood for a short ride or planning a multi-day mission, Queenstown has a cycle trail for you.

The Queenstown Trail is New Zealand’s most popular Great Ride, developed and managed by the Queenstown Trails Trust. Over 130kms of beautiful off-road trails lead from Queenstown to Gibbston wine country via Arrowtown. Ride past lakes, along rivers, through stunning alpine vistas, heritage sites and vines. Wherever you ride, you’re never far from a refreshing pitstop at one of our region’s celebrated cafés, cellar doors and restaurants.

The Otago Central Rail Trail, the new Lake Dunstan Trail, Roxburgh Gorge Trail and Clutha Gold Trail are only a short drive away in neighbouring Central Otago  and many operators provide pickup services from Queenstown. Or if you're planning to head south on The Around the Mountains cycle trail, this begins with a cruise on the TSS Earnslaw steamship to Walter Peak before you hop on your bike to start your cycling journey.

Bike tours, bike hire, and trail transport make planning and booking your cycling adventure a breeze. With trails of all abilities and world class amenities, Queenstown is the perfect base for a biking adventure and the gateway to a region where the biking options are endless.

Bike The Wineries  Full Day

Queenstown, arrowtown, and the gibbston wine valley, ride information.

Our Bike The Wineries Full Day ride begins with a shuttle from our shop in Queenstown out to Arrowtown, one of the most scenic settlements in New Zealand. Here we cover mountain bike fitting, navigation tips, and (very importantly) winery information. There’s the opportunity to explore the town – originally a gold-miner’s settlement – and visit one of the cafés, or hop straight onto your bike and get into your morning ride.

The route starts by following the willow-lined Arrow River Bridges Trail to the Kawarau Suspension Bridge, home of the world’s first bungy jump, along the way riding over scenic swing bridges and following a river gorge. From there, spend the afternoon biking at your leisure along the Gibbston River Trail, using our winery map to visit as many of the cellar doors linked throughout this easy-riding trail. Enjoy a picnic en-route or lunch at one of the many wineries. The riding distance to the first winery is 15 km, or it’s 25 km to the end of the wine valley.

We will pick you up at 4:30 PM from your winery of choice for the shuttle back to Queenstown.

Electric Bikes Are Highly Recommended!

We are yet to hear anyone say “I wish I never upgraded to an electric bike”, but we have certainly heard the opposite! Guarantee the good times, keep your group together and have a fun day out there. E-bikes are the business – you won’t regret the upgrade!

Winery Bookings

To ensure you have an awesome experience at the wineries, it is best to book your tastings and lunch in advance . We can help with timings once you have booked with us.

The wineries are independently owned and operated, so tastings are not included in the price of this package, but average cost is around $10 per winery; some are free!

For this Bike The Wineries Full Day ride, most riders reach the Bungy Bridge – the start of the Gibbston Valley Trail – at approximately 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM. From there, the riding times between each winery is shown below to help with booking your wine tastings:
