How to Choose the Right Insurance for EBC And ABC Trek ?

Vishwanath Radhakrishna

For those who have an astounding appreciation for the mountains, Nepal Himalaya is like a dream. While going out to summit some of the mountain peaks require a very high level of commitment and preparation, trekking to base camps of some of the highest mountains in the world can be achieved comparatively easily. Two of the most famous base camp treks are Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

If we go with expert opinions Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek might not be categorized as some difficult or explicitly dangerous treks but these treks take trekkers through some of the most remote regions of the planet. When we talk about some remote places, these places come in a package that involves various risks. Which can be as little as a misplaced or stolen gear to a fully equipped heli rescue from high altitudes that can burn some serious holes in anybody's pockets.

Travel insurance can not only be helpful in such dire situations but it has been made essential to have travel insurance if one wants to take on Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp Treks in Nepal.

How to choose the right travel insurance for EBC and ABC Trek

Buying insurance for Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp trek is quite different from general travel insurance for Nepal and finding the best suitable option to go with can be a daunting task sometimes. Here are some of the factors that you might need to check before committing to a certain service.

Travel insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek is pretty much different from general travel insurance. Because during these treks you will be standing trekking in altitude higher than 5,000 meters and general travel insurances don't cover these altitudes. Here we are listing some important factors that must be addressed before buying insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Altitude is probably the biggest difference in buying travel insurance for the Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Some high points of these treks will be taking you over an altitude of 5,500m above sea level, and most travel insurance policies cover only up to 3,000m. That is why you would need special insurance for EBC and ABC.

The most obvious illness that comes to anybody's mind while trekking in high altitude is AMS, Acute Mountain Sickness. For this is very true but it is not the only illness for which one needs to be prepared because hygiene level in this part of the world is not in line with western standards and that might cause some serious illness to people who are not used to this environment. That is why it is highly recommended to see if the insurance covers these illnesses.

Accidents -

Both Annapurna and Everest Base Camp treks are categorized as not dangerous or demanding treks so any major accidents are very uncommon but we can not rule the possibility out, especially due to high altitudes. Being some of the most famous trekking destinations in Nepal, while trekking towards ABC and EBC, one is never too far for any settlements and that means easy availability of first aid facilities but in case of any major accident, the only option is heli rescue and that is gonna cost a lot of money so it is advised that while buying the insurance one has to make sure that the insurance covers the cost of heli rescue if that is needed.

Delayed or Cancelled Flights and Lost Baggage -

Air connectivity of Lukla and Pokhara Airports that connect EBC and ABC trailheads to Kathmandu is quite heavily dependent on the weather condition of the region and there is no certainty about that. So one has to make sure that the insurance covers the cost of any delayed or canceled flights due to various reasons, not only weather.

Theft is not very common in higher altitudes but keep your valuables with you, because insurance covers lost baggage but only till a limit.

RecommendedIinsurance plans for EBC and ABC Trek -

There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to insurance for EBC and ABC, both from international and local Nepali insurance providers. The cost of insurance depends on the kinds of risks it covers and the duration of the travel. Safetywing and Worldnomads are two of the most trusted names in the travel insurance sector and they have some dedicated insurance plans for trekking in Nepal, especially EBC and ABC Treks.

Insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek: How to choose a right travel insurance?

Insurance for everest base camp trek:.

Everest Base Camp Trek is the most popular trek in the world. Every keen trekker, nomad, and adventure lover from all around the world want to experience the wonderful EBC Trek once in their lifetime. But, trekking to the base camp of the world’s highest peak is not as easy and simple as one normally thinks. The Everest Trek is a non-technical trek; however, it is challenging, adventurous, and high altitude trek. So, before trekking to the Himalayas, make sure you will include Everest Base Camp Trek Insurance in your priority list too. There are many enthusiastic trekkers who are unaware of the importance of insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek. They frequently ask about what is travel insurance, what does it cover, why is it necessary, and something more. Therefore, we have dedicated this article to clarify about travel insurance and everything related to it.

Table of Contents

Everest base camp trek insurance: what is travel insurance.

Travel insurance is an insurance policy that covers the losses while traveling to different parts of the world. It basically covers the flight cancellation, baggage loss or damage, theft, medical evacuation, and other expenses during the trek. Simply, travel insurance is a means of protection from uncertain loss and health hazards while you are traveling to an unknown country. The insurance premium depends on the destination, duration, possibility of risk, age of the travelers, and many more. There are many policies of insurance; but while trekking in the Himalayas, you need insurance that covers every loss that comes during EBC Trek.

Why do you need Insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek ?

What travel insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek normally covers?

Medical evacuation:.

While trekking in the higher elevation, you may face many difficulties due to the harsh climate and health emergencies. In the Everest Base Camp Trek, you have to walk for 12 to 22 days with an average walk of 7-8 hours per day. So, there is always a risk of getting injured or accidents as trekkers need to cross numerous bridges, narrow cliffs, gorges, and moraine glacial. Sometimes, there may also appear some medical complications like an ankle injury, muscle strain, or other accidents. Also, there is risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) while traveling to the Base Camp of the world's highest peak. Due to thin air in the higher elevation above 4,500m, some of the trekkers feel the symptoms of AMS and needed to be evacuated to the nearby hospital. As there are no means of transportation in the higher region. the helicopter rescue operation is necessary for immediate evacuation. So, the travel insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek helps to cover the medical evacuation over 6,000m during emergencies.

Flight insurance/flight cancellation:

Flight cancellation is a prime issue while trekking in the Himalayas. The flights get canceled or delayed for an uncertain time due to fluctuating climate, technical problems, strikes, or some serious virus. This kind of issue may ruin your holiday plan and your budget too. If you have insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek, you don't need to worry about it. The flight insurance covers your flight cancellation and compensates you for your loss. Even, flight insurance covers your life in case of a plane crash during the flight.

Baggage insurance:

Travel insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek

Everest Base Camp Trek is dream of many keen trekkers. But, it can be a nightmare due to some unpredictable calamities like an avalanche, landslide, accidents, and track lost. We have heard many issues like these before. And it can happen anytime to anyone. So, while buying insurance you have to make sure that it covers rescue operations during emergencies.

How to choose the best Insurance company?

There are many insurance companies that offer you the best policies for your trek. Taking a single insurance company's name can be bais. So, I recommend you to search on the internet and choose the highly rated insurance company in your respective country if possible. If you don't find a good insurance company then check the reviews of the insurance company on the internet and go for it. But, before purchasing the insurance, make sure they sell you the adventure insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek which covers above 6,000m. We personally request you not to purchase the insurance policy from the Nepali Insurance company. No Nepal based insurance company will offer you travel insurance as the government of Nepal cracked down the helicopter rescue scams done by the trekking companies to claim the charge of evacuation and hospital bills.

In conclusion:

The travel insurance is a means to get benefits from the unforeseen loss and expenses during the trek. It helps to minimize the risk and worries while you are trekking in the fascinating Himalayas. Therefore, you need to know that your travel insurance for the Everest Base Camp needs to cover the flight insurance, baggage insurance, accidents, and medical evacuation above 6,000m. There are only a few insurance companies that will provide medical evacuation above 6,000m. Most of the insurance companies cover only up to 4,000m altitude which will not be okay for Everest Base Camp Trek. Everest Base Camp is a high altitude trek and you need to trek to the higher altitude of 5,363m/17,597ft and 5,550m/18,208ft. So, you must buy the insurance policy which will cover 6,000m altitude from the authorized company after checking their reviews on the internet. Thank you! For more detail information, contact MMT .

Insurance For Trekking To Everest Base Camp

Post Template

Getting travel insurance is vital and should be on the top of any travelers list. However, you shouldn't be fooled, there are countless types of travel insurance policies and they all come with an incredible amount of fine print.

Travel insurance is especially important if you are planning on trekking at high altitudes. Therefore, if you're planning on hiking to Everest Base Camp , you'll need to make sure your insurance policy covers you adequately. Most companies don't provide cover over a certain altitude, and they certainly don't provide air support in case of an emergency.

To guide you in the best travel insurance options for your Everest Base Camp trek, we have put together this detailed article that outlines the key points to look out for when purchasing your policy.

World Nomads are a leading travel insurance provider and have standard insurance offer which we have used personally on all our treks in Nepal.

Disclaimer : The information we provide is as reliable and accurate as possible. However, we are not insurance experts and you will need to read the fine print of policy or discuss options with your insurance provider. The information we have provided has been taken from personal experience and talking with other experienced travelers.

Insurance for Trekking to Everest Base Camp Considerations

High altitude.

Trekking to Everest Base Camp involves high altitude, in fact at the highest point - Kala Patthar , you'll be over 5,500 metres.

Generally speaking, most standard travel insurance policies will not cover you over 3,000 metres. This is fine for most travellers, but not if you're trekking to EBC!

The reason most travel insurers don't cover over 3,000m is for the simple reason that the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is much higher above this height. Another contributing factor is that medical assistance is also far more difficult at these heights as it often involves air rescue.

These factors mean that standard insurance is not enough, and you will need to speak to an expert in trekking insurance to make sure you have the necessary cover needed. When hiking the Everest Base Camp trek, we suggest taking out travel insurance that covers you up to 6,000 metres. Remember to read the fine print though!

Trekking Accidents

Although no one likes to dwell on it, accidents can and often do happen whilst trekking. Whilst the Everest Base Camp trek is not considered dangerous in itself, any mountain trek has potential danger, especially at high altitudes. High altitude affects people in different ways and can, potentially inflame pre-existing medical conditions like heart problems. Even small injuries, like a twisted ankle or pulled leg muscle, can be a serious issue at high altitude. All of the above-mentioned issues make the Everest Base Camp trek riskier than your standard hike back home.

See more in our guide on the overall difficulty of the Everest Base Camp Trek .

Luckily, the trek is one of the most popular in Nepal and sees a lot of footfalls. Therefore, you're never far from a helping hand. Even so, it is crucial that you are covered for medical evacuation (preferably by helicopter) and assistance on top of standard hospital cover.

Mark-in-helicopter-Everest-Base-Camp-Trek-Nepal

Illness and Off-mountain Accidents

Travelling in places like Nepal increases the probability of illness as your body is usually not adapted to the food or hygiene levels in foreign areas. Anyone who has traveled to India can probably attest to this after experiencing 'Delhi Belly'!

Therefore, you need to make sure that your insurance covers you for a wide variety of accidents and illnesses in Nepal. The fine print will detail these, so make sure you read it! Also make sure you research what vaccinations are required depending on your country of origin.

Stolen, Lost or Delayed Baggage

Sadly, the feeling of arriving at an airport and finding that your bags have not arrived with you or that they're damaged is a familiar one to most of us. This causes a fair amount of stress, aggravation and hassle as you need to buy new things in time for your trek.

Luckily, travel insurance policies now cover lost, stolen or damaged luggage as standard. However, once again, you need to read the fine print to find out exactly how much you will be covered for as all policies will have a cover limit. Remember, you may be travelling with some pretty expensive gear!

Top Tip: Make sure you wear your hiking boots and carry any mission-critical items in your hand luggage. That way, if you are unfortunate and your baggage is delayed or lost, you can still hit the trail without too much bother!

General Travel Insurance Cover

When purchasing your Everest Base Camp trekking insurance you should also consider factors such as flight cancellations and delays. This is usually covered in standard policies, but it is definitely something you need to make sure of.

Make sure to also check the fine print for reimbursement policies such as if your actual trek is cancelled! Your provider should be able to tell you the details, but it is an important consideration, especially if travelling in winter.

There are a few other things to look out for in your trekking insurance policy that all add to the smooth running of your trip. If your flight is delayed or cancelled or, worse, your tour is cancelled, you need to be able to cover yourself.

Now that you’ve read the above, you're ready to make an informed decision on your Everest Base Camp trek insurance.

Over the years, we have used a number of different insurers. However, the one that stands out above the rest in terms of value and support is World Nomads . They have always been extremely helpful and professional.

Hi I would require a quote for ebc trek starting from 11 May 2017 to 24 May 2017. There will be 3 of us for this trip.

Hi Ann, we are not a tour or insurance operator, for insurance use the quote calculator on this page from our partner World Nomads, for tour operator recommendations complete the form on this page: https://ebctrekguide.com/

Hi Do you know of any insurance companies that cover you without a guide on ebc?

Hi Jack, Unfortunately I’m not aware of any insurance companies that will cover you on the EBC trek if you are not part of an organised and guided trek. The best thing to do is to read their small print as some companies might not explicitly state this. Hope this helps!

do you have any positive reviews from people who have needed assistance on the EBC and have had World Nomads as their insurance company? I am currently looking for insurance and World Nomads have terrible reviews online about the their communication and claims process? Thanks

Hi Craig, my experience with World Nomads has always been excellent. The trouble with reviews for a product as boring as insurance is that no leaves a review when things go well, but when something goes wrong they are very quick to review. World Nomads have millions of customers so there are bound to be some bad experiences, but for the vast majority of claims I think they are excellent. Hope this helps.

Avoid World Nomads at all costs! I bought their coverage last year for my EBC trek. Worthless!!! They make you jump through impossible hoops when you need them. This is my personal experience from April 2018. There are other options. I cannot stress enough the point. Its not the money spent… it’s the principal. They won’t do anything to help. Lot’s of friendly emails and lots of explanations, but zero help when you need them at 4,000 or 5,000 meters. You don’t know me, but trust me. I will never again use them or their affiliates. I think it’s wiser to use the more expensive rescue services. It’s what I should have done! Just say no to World Nomads

Just my advice from personal experience. Dont get world nomads if you are going to EBC. We were in Lukla waiting for our plane, and I got cancelled. There were no planes and we were about to lose our international flight.

So we had to book an helicopter to go outside Lukla. It is suposse to be covered by World Nomads but they won´t care shit. They will say its not covered. As this can happen to you, just take care that world nomas will not cover your 500$ helicopter to get outside of Lukla.

Hi Jay, sounds like you had a really bad experience. I don’t personally know World Nomads policy on the use of helicopters but my understanding is that if one needs to use a helicopter and wants insurance to cover it, the reasoning needs to be medical emergency, and I believe World Nomads have an an excess of $500.

In terms of taking a helicopter to catch a connecting flight out of Kathmandu, I don’t believe World Nomads covers this. Even if it is an emergency to catch your connecting flight.

As a general piece of advice for readers, Jay’s case of not being able to fly out of Lukla is relatively common. The weather changes dramatically at Lukla and flights get grounded quite frequently. I always recommend building in at least one extra day in Kathmandu after your trek to avoid connecting flight problems out of Kathmandu.

Hi planning trip to EBC in 2024 being 76 yers of age struggling with insurance can you offer any help

Hi David, yes, it’s very difficult to find insurers who will cover once you’re over 70 years of age. You could try the following providers: Snowcard, Dogtag, True Traveller, and the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) if you’re in the UK or American Alpine Institute if you’re in the States.

Hi Are you aware of any insurance company that will cover the EBC trek for a 70 year old. World Nomads only cover up to 65 years. One or two that I have checked cover only up to 4500 meters

Hi Feroz, I’m not sure which provider would cover EBC for people who are 70+ old. You could try insuremytrip.com.

We work with local guides to offer great value adventures at unbeatable prices.

Everest Base Camp Trek has become increasingly popular among Indians lately. As neighboring countries, Nepal and India share a cultural affinity, ease of access, and privileges on various services, even in the Everest Base Camp Trek.

Why is Everest Base Camp Trek Cheaper for Indians?

Flight waiting to take off in Lukla

Compared to most other countries, the Everest Base Camp is much cheaper for Indians.  For starters, Indians don’t need a VISA to enter Nepal, and there are a bunch of ways to get to Kathmandu. If catching a flight is expensive, one can opt for land transport or even bring your own vehicle.

In the Everest Base Camp Trek, Indians have an edge as the airfare prices and permit fees are lower by a third. Although the meal and accommodation prices are the same, the cost is significantly less.

Also, in order to restart tourism in the Everest Region, HoneyGuide has come up with a limited time offer (valid till 30 June, 2021) for Indian nationals.

The treks above (except Heli Tour and Namche Trek) includes:

  • Both Way Kathmandu-Lukla flights
  • Trekking Guide from Lukla
  • Accommodation during the trek on twin sharing basis
  • Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner during the trek.
  • 2 liter hot water / person / night.
  • Porters are available at extra cost.

However, the downside to it is the inflated cost and lack of flexibility. The departure dates and itineraries are fixed, and you don’t get to choose your services. A lot of times, the need to catch up with the pace of the group can also cause AMS as altitude acts differently on different people.

Companies like Thrillophilia and India Hikes are popular tour operators that run Everest Base Camp Trek for Indians.

Everest Base Camp Insurance for Indians

A helicopter flying in Khumbu

We cannot stress the importance of Insurance in Everest Base Camp Trek enough.

According to the research paper by CIWEC , over 30% to 40% of people who hike above 4000 meters in a period of 1 to 3 weeks get altitude illness . That’s because you will be sleeping at an altitude over 5000 meters where the oxygen is almost half than the sea level and not designed for a normal human body. Besides AMS, the other injuries like leg fracture, ankle sprain, slipping on the trails are a possibility. And in case of emergency, a helicopter evacuation costing up to INR 125,000 is your only way out in the Everest region.

When you are looking for insurance service providers, make sure your travel insurance covers both for high altitude trekking up to 5500 meters and helicopter rescue. World Nomads is one of the most reliable Insurance Providers with complete coverage that most travelers use. Besides, Insurance provided by India hikes with Religare seems to be a good option for Indians at a very reasonable premium rate that covers medical emergencies and evacuations up to 6000 meters. The premium rate stars INR 120 per day.

Everest Base Camp Trek FAQ

What makes the everest base camp hike special.

The iconic Everest Base Camp Trek leads you through the Khumbu Valley, allowing you to experience the immense beauty of the surrounding  Sagarmatha National Park  while simultaneously providing breath-taking vistas of 4 of the 6 highest peaks in the world – My. Everest (8.848m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 meters), Mt. Makalu (8,470 meters) and Cho Oyu (8,201 meters).

The classic trek retraces the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay and the countless other early pioneers of Mount Everest as you trek from Lukla to the Base Camp.

As a  teahouse trek  you will stay in some of the highest villages in the world as you explore the local culture and traditions of the native Sherpas by learning about their spiritual connection with the mountains.

On the trek you will have the chance to ascend  Kala Patthar , reaching an altitude of 5,500m and witness awe-inspiring views of Mount Everest.

You will also have the chance to explore the various Buddhist monasteries dotted along the trail and learn about a culture steeped in history and tradition, inextricably linked to the very mountains on which you have unforgettable views.

Below we have provided a brief overview of the classic route itinerary, with regional and trekking maps. We have also answered some of the most frequently asked questions on the logistics of the trek, permits, tour guides, weather, insurance, cost, difficulty and what to pack.

Where is the Everest base camp trek located?

All treks in the Everest region are located within the orange rectangle on the map below. The block represents the Everest or Khumbu region of Nepal and shows its location in relation to Kathmandu, where flights to and from Nepal arrive and depart.

The starting point of the Everest Base Camp Trek,  Lukla , is also visible on the map. Other variations of the trek which don’t involve flying to Lukla generally start at Jiri – you can read more about this route variation  here .

There are many great trekking maps for the Everest Region. Some take in the Gokyo region, whereas others cover Jiri and further Southern and Western aspects of the region.

We recommend Nepa Maps .

What is the best Everest guidebook?

nepal-trekking-guidebook

We recommended taking a detailed guidebook with you on the trek.

The Lonely Planet Trekking in Nepal Himalaya guidebook is updated regularly and is a well-known, trusted resource used by many trekkers worldwide.

The guide is very detailed and contains information for many treks, meaning you can use it more than once!

How high is Everest base camp?

Everest base camp is 5,364 metres (17,598 ft) high. The graph below shows the altitude profile for the classic Everest Base Camp trek. The order of the names on the horizontal axis shows the typical progression of the hike with the major stops on the way. The graph makes it easier to see the gradual ascent and more rapid descent of the trek.

The highest point on the EBC hike is Kala Patthar at 5,554 meters.

What is the day-to-day itinerary on the Mt Everest base camp hike?

The classic Everest Base Camp Trek starts in Lukla and leads you through the Khumbu Valley to the Everest Base Camp situated on the south-side of Mount Everest.

Most trekker’s adventures, however, begin in Kathmandu where the international airport for Nepal is located. From there it is a short, yet  unforgettable flight into Lukla  from where you will start the actual trekking (try get a seat on the left hand side of the plane for best first views of the Himalaya).

The entire journey including the trek typically lasts between 14 and 16 days, with 12 days on the trail. Of these 12 days, 2/3 will be spent acclimatising to the high altitude, so 9-10 days of actual trekking can be expected.

everest-base-camp-trek-route-variations

For those who don’t want to start their trek by flying into Lukla Airport, the  Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek  variation provides a unique alternative. This trek starts with a bus ride from Kathmandu to Jiri from where the trekking starts. Because Jiri is considerably further away than Lukla, this variation will add around 5 days onto the trek.

Here is a standard itinerary for a 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek experience.

Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu

If you have organised a trip with a tour operator they will usually provide airport transfers, otherwise there are loads of taxis available at the airport. Top tip: make sure to agree a price before getting in the taxi. Meters are sometimes used, but rare. We recommend staying in Thamel (which is about 15 minute drive from Kathmandu airport). There are many hotels in Thamel, Kathmandu, with varying degrees of hospitality.

thamel-ebc-trek

Vibrant streets of Thamel, Kathmandu

Day 2: Fly Kathmandu to Lukla. Trek to Phadking

Weather permitting you will fly from Kathmandu International Airport to Lukla in the morning. Flights to Lukla are prone to delay due to weather. We recommend building as much flexibility into your itinerary to cater for delays (i.e. having a day or two spare after the trek).

If trekking with a tour operator they will have arranged your flight, otherwise you can purchase tickets at the airport for around US$250-$300 return. If you are taking a guide the cost of his flight with be charged at a local rate of about $100 return.

Expect a nerve-racking flight into the famous Lukla Airport that provides great views of the region and of Everest – try to get a seat on the left side of the plane. Once landed, you will start the trek to the village of Phadking – on the way you will pass incredible boulders, carved with Buddhist prayers.

Day 3: Trek from Phadking to Namche Bazaar

This day will be spent trekking from Phadking through Mojo, ending up in Namche Bazaar. Some people cut this day short by stopping in Mojo (if you do the Mount Kailash Teahouse is great, and offers hot showers!).

You will enter the Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) on this day. You will have plenty of time spent in Namche Bazaar – a small Sherpa market town, with countless sightseeing opportunities including the potential to catch your first glimpse of Everest.

Sign with rules about entering Sagamartha National Park

Day 4: Acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar

At close to 3,500m, Namche Bazaar acts as an important acclimatization stop while doubling up as an opportunity to explore the village and surrounding areas. If it happens to be a Saturday, be sure to check out the market. Most tour guides will take you on a short acclimatization trek to the Everest View Hotel.

If it’s a clear day you should be able to snap some awesome pics of Ama Dablam in the foreground, and Mount Everest in the background. The hotel also provides WiFi at a cost so if you’re looking to call back home or just to connect, bring your device with you. For more information on internet on the trek, check out our detailed article .

Day 5: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

The day is spent trekking from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche, the home of the Tengboche Monastery – the largest in the region.

Some variations will take you through the ancient Tibet-Nepal trading route over the Nanpa La pass to Thami.

Day 6: Trek from Tengboche to Periche

The next stop on the trek is Pheriche – the home of the Himalaya Rescue Association . The route takes you through Phangboche, which offers amazing views of Ama Dablam towering above you.

Day 7: Acclimitization Day. Potentially Trek from Pheriche to Dingboche

Pheriche is usually used as a stop for the second acclimatization day. There are various activities to do in the area. Tshola Tsho Lake is a popular destination for trekkers stopping in Pheriche.

Your tour guide might even take you to the nearby village of Dingboche where you will be able to see great views of Lhotse and Island Peak to the east. Dingboche is used as the start to the  variation trek to Island Peak .

Day 8: Trek from Pheriche to Lobuche

This day is long and is spent climbing over 600m from Pheriche to Lobuche. On the way, you will pass the well-known Khumbu Glacier as well as various memorials to those Sherpas and climbers who have died on Everest.

You will be able to see Scott Fischer’s memorial here. You will also see Lobuche East (make sure to use the zoom on your camera or if you have binoculars to try see any climbers on the peak)

Day 9: Hike from Lobuche to Gorak Shep

Hike from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, the highest permanently inhabited village in the world. Here, you will rest for a while and have something to eat before climbing further to the Everest Base Camp.

The trekker stop point is just before the actual base camp.

Most tour groups are not allowed to enter or stay in Everest Base Camp so take the chance to experience the buzz and excitement of the climbing groups is often limited.

After getting your iconic picture taken at EBC you will descend back to Gorak Shep where you will stay for the night.

Day 10: Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar, then onto Dingboche

Another day of steep trekking allows you to reach Kala Patthar – the highest point on the trek at just over 5,500m. Its location and height result in the best views of Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse in the area. Just hope that the weather is kind to you on this day as it is one of the highlights of the whole trek.

That same day you will descend over 1,000m down to Dingboche where you will spend the night.

Day 11: Hike back to Namche Bazaar from Dingboche

Descend back to Namche Bazaar via Tengboche. Keep your camera on you as you pass through the rhododendron covered slopes – making for a great photo.

Day 12: Hike from Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Return all the way back to Lukla with a long day of hiking. Your last night on the mountain will be spent celebrating in Lukla.

Day 13 and 14: Fly back from Lukla to Kathmandu

Catch the return flight from Lukla to Kathmandu in the morning. Onward travel back home our to your next destination!

More Everest Base Camp hike FAQs

How much does it cost to trek to everest base camp.

You can trek to Mt Everest base camp for as little as $700 if you go solo without a guide. Guided tours that often include return flights to Kathmandu cost around $1000-1300 per person depending on the operator. For a detailed breakdown of costs, see our article on the cost of the Everest Base Camp Trek .

Can you trek to Everest Base Camp independently or without a guide / support?

Yes, but it is only advised for trekkers that have experience of high altitude multi-day trekking, and are comfortable carry 15-20kg a day.

Trekking independently is the cheapest option because you forgo any of the amenities and expertise that is typically offered with a guided trek. You will have to arrange your own domestic flights to and from Lukla airport, and arrange accommodation for each stop in the trek.

If you are comfortable organising the logistics of the trek, then this might be an option for you.

Should I join a guided EBC trek / group?

If this is one of your first high altitude trekking experiences then we recommend using a tour operator and joining a guided group. The typical package will include domestic flights, transport to and from the airport, accommodation for every overnight stop, all permits and passes, porters to carry your luggage and of course the expertise of a guide who will provide you with an insight into the region.

Local tour operators are abundant and often cheaper than western operators, but their level of service will be reflected in their price. Hygiene and ethical standards of some of these operators is also questionable. Prices range from £600 ($750) to £1000 ($1300).

Western tour operators will provide a much more consistent service. Without cutting prices, they offer affordable yet comfortable accommodation and will employ the best guides in the region who will be able to converse in English. Prices range from £1000 ($1300) to £2000 ($2600).

When is the best time to hike to Everest Base Camp?

Contrary to what you might think, the best time to go on the Everest Base Camp trek is not during the height of summer. The spring months of February through May is widely considered the peak season or best time to hike to Everest base camp. This is also the time when the region is at its busiest.

Weather during these months is stable and dry – perfect for trekking and for sightseeing. The lower mountains and foothills are most colourful during this time as well, so you can expect verdant fields and hillsides covered in rhododendrons.

September and October is another popular trekking period on the other side of summer that tends to be a little less busy. Another way to avoid the hustle and bustle of peak season is to try some of the trek variations such as the Gokyo Lakes hike .

Trekking in the winter months (November-January) is still possible, but be prepared for temperatures below freezing. Peak summer is known as monsoon season, characterised by short, sharp downpours. The trails are very wet and trekking during these months is not advised.

How difficult is the Everest Base Camp Trek?

Contrary to popular belief, Everest Base Camp trek is not very difficult. It requires no prior trekking experience or mountaineering skills of any sort. We have seen people from all walks of life, shapes and sizes completing the trek.

The round-trip length of the trek is 130km, which is spread over just short of two weeks of trekking. Expect to cover around 15km over 5/6 hours of trekking each day – a very achievable number. The hardest part of the trek is the altitude and the effect that it can have on your body.

All good tour operators will factor in acclimatisation days into their itinerary and will aim for a gradual pace of ascent that will ensure your body slowly gets used to the altitude.

We recommend undertaking a gym training programme and practice hikes 6-8 weeks prior to embarking on the trek. Read up more on the  difficulty of the EBC trek  and  how to train for the EBC trek .

Do I need a visa or permit for the EBC Trek?

Yes. If you are a national of a country other than India, you will need to purchase a visa. The 15-day multi entry visa starts at $25 and the 30-day visa goes for $40. The usual guided trek lasts around 15 days, but there is always the possibility of travel delay so we recommending opting for the 30-day visa for a slightly higher price.

You will need a Trekkers Information Management System card (TIMS) as well as a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit. Tour operators will include both in their price and will obtain them for you beforehand. If you plan to trek independently, however, you will need $20 for the TIMS card and roughly $40 for the Sagarmatha entry permit.

Make sure you bring at least four passport sized photos in case they are needed for permits.

Will I get altitude sickness on the trek to Mt Everest base camp?

Most people who follow the standard route itinerary, take a gradual ascent with acclimatisation days built in and monitor their symptoms will not suffer from any sort of altitude sickness.

That being said, altitude sickness is not correlated to age or fitness and can affect some people worse than others.

Because it is a potential risk, you must read up about  acclimatisation and altitude sickness  so that you understand the symptoms and how to prevent them.

What should I pack for the Mt Everest trek?

Condensing a packing list into one short answer is impossible, so we have compiled a very  detailed and comprehensive EBC Packing List guide  to help you plan and pack for the trek.

It is possible to buy most gear in Kathmandu, but we recommend bringing all the important stuff with you from home. Read our guide for recommendations on what to bring, which brands are trusted as well as items you won’t need during the trek.

What insurance do I need for EBC?

You will need to take out insurance that will cover you for hiking up to altitudes of 6,000m.

Typical travel insurance will not cover this so we have compiled an article that will help you find the right insurance policy that adequately covers delays, accidents and altitude related illness.

World Nomads provide insurance for treks to Everest Base Camp.

EBC Trek Route Variations

There are a number of route variations for the trek to Everest Base Camp. Below we briefly discuss the three most popular options.

Gokyo Lakes Trek

gokyo-lakes-trek-gokyo

One of the more popular variations of the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Gokyo Lakes Trek , also starts at Lukla and follows the classic base camp trek to Namche Bazaar where it forks north-west.

The trek proceeds through the towns of Dole and Machermo before reaching the stunning Gokyo Lakes. From there you can ascend to the peak of Gokyo Ri in the north, before crossing the Ngozumba glacier and Cho La Pass and re-joining the classic trek at Lobuche.

The detour adds 2/3 days onto the trek but provides the wonderful opportunity to summit a peak while also avoiding some of the busier parts of the trek.

Jiri To Everest Base Camp

jiri-to-everest-base-camp-nunthala

This variation of the classic trek offers an alternative to flying into Lukla from Kathmandu to start the trek. The  Jiri variation  starts with an 8-hour bus ride from Kathmandu to Jiri, where the trek begins.

The variation adds an extra 5/6 days onto the trip as you trek through the Solukhumbu region and make your way past Lukla, where the trek then follows the same route as the classic Everest Base Camp Trek.

It involves a scenic, yet long, bus ride as well as a lot more exposure to the Tibetan and Sherpa cultures. Expect to trek through more forests and streams as you start at the relatively low altitude of 1,800m and work your way up to Lukla and beyond.

Three Passes Trek

three passes trek

The  Three Passes Trek  is a tougher variation than the classic Everest Base Camp Trek because it involves crossing three very high passes as well as summiting some walking peaks which are not included on the classic trek.

The variation starts by following the classic trek from Lukla to Namche Bazaar before veering west towards Thame and the remote Nangpa Valley. The first of the three passes encountered is the Renjo La, where you will be afforded magnificent views of Everest before descending to the idyllic Gokyo lakes.

The next pass, Cho La, involves walking up a fairly steep and icy trail before reaching a small glacier at the top. From here, you descend and re-join the main base camp trek where you summit Kala Patthar – the iconic viewpoint. You continue onto base camp itself before descending to Lobuche.

You then head east over the third pass of Kongma La and continue onwards to summit the third peak of Chukking Ri. Once again you will have amazing views of the surrounding peaks that you would not get to see on the classic trek. The circuit is completed by returning to Lukla through the main Everest trail.

Island Peak Climb via EBC

island peak

Island Peak  is not so much a variation as it is an expedition in it’s own right. Summiting Island Peak is significantly harder than the trekking any of the routes mentioned above, but it does usually involve a visit to Everest Base Camp to acclimatise before the summit attempt. The climb to the peak is not considered technical although it still requires basic knowledge of jumaring, abseiling,  using crampons and ice axes. Standing at just under 6,200m, altitude is a real factor.

Most climbers of Island Peak use the traditional base camp trek as a means of acclimatising before heading to the Island Peak Base Camp via Dingboche on the main trail, or by traversing the Chongma La pass. Summiting from the base camp typically takes two days and the whole variation will add around 4 days onto the classic EBC trek.

Everest Base Camp Trek Insurance

Travel Insurance is a must for everyone who is planning of travelling abroad. It ensures the safety of the investment of the travelers in case of any bad things happen. Likewise, a traveler must have Everest Base Camp Trek Insurance before heading to Everest Base Camp Trek .

Despite being a moderate trek and not posing any direct risks, a traveler should consider travel insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek. In case of any bad happenings during the trip, it ensures travelers save their time and investment.

Indeed, the altitude ranging from 4000m to 5000m can be a real challenge for travelers as it can cause Acute Mountain Sickness (AMT) .

Generally, travel insurance is a must for any travelers who are going to trek in Everest Base Camp as small injuries can be really costly.

Everest Base Camp Trek Insurance Should Cover

High altitude.

The insurance for the EBC trek must cover altitudes above 3000 m and below 6000 m because the altitude of EBC Trek reaches 5545 m above sea level. This is because of EBC trek poses the risk of mountain sickness and other illnesses which are related to high altitude. However, most travel insurance cover only up to 3000 m.

When you go over 2500 m, then you may feel different temperatures and climates. This can lead to health problems. If you feel hard to inhale, then it is better to go down and down slowly to deal with high altitudes. In most cases, it works. But if the situation goes really harsh, then you may need helicopter evacuation immediately.

Accidents and Illness

Accidents are not common in mountain areas with trekkers or hikers. However, there are a few chances of happening. So, we can not avoid it. Indeed, it is a remote and high-altitude area where minor injuries can occur. But if it comes to severe pains like muscle pulling, it can become a serious problem.

EBC trek is the most popular trek. So, usually, you can expect people nearby you with first aid if you need it. But you still need to have insurance that should cover the helicopter evacuation in case of any harsh injuries.

I don’t think you can expect high standards of hygiene in the mountain area. This is why you must check whether your policy covers hospitalization.

Flights and Baggage

These days, most travel insurance usually covers stolen and lost baggage. As if you are bringing fairly expensive gears and packs, and unfortunately got stolen or lost, then it can ruin your whole trip. So, you should check the insurance provider to ensure how much they will cover.

Inarguably, almost anyone can plan and enjoy trekking to the Everest Base Camp but we believe that there are certain things that one needs to keep in mind to make their trekking experience smoother and more enjoyable.

Check out the below-stated tips and tricks to save your time and money to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime adventure experience.

Buy gear in Kathmandu

  • Undoubtedly, competition is all around the corner and Kathmandu is home to several trekking shops from where one can purchase the required trekking gear at very reasonable rates. However, you need to be very alert while selecting the gear as the quality varies.

Select a reliable and authorized travel agency

  • One needs to be very attentive and wise while engaging a tour agency for their trekking experience to Everest Base Camp. If you fail to do so then you are not going to complete your adventure activity with ease and comfort.

Keep count on your baggage weight limit

  • Your main pack should not exceed 10 kg of weight and the carry-on pack must be of 5 kg only and you need to strictly adhere to this weight limit policy or else you might not attend the flight. Although it is possible to carry extra luggage by paying extra cash we would not recommend you to do so.

Be ready for flight delays

  • Climatic conditions in high altitude areas are inconsistent which leads to delay in flights. We advise you to carry extra snacks, a book if you love reading, and most importantly a lot of patience.

Take care of your feet and overall health

  • Your safety and security are our topmost priorities therefore, we recommend you purchase a good pair of shoes to save your feet on the rough mountain slopes. Additionally, we also recommend you to binge on the meals offered by your travel agency and if you are thinking to taste something from a restaurant or hotel then check the authenticity and the hygiene level of that place first.

Carry your first aid kit

  • This is the most important point that you must keep in mind as none of us knows that how our body would react to the atmosphere of a new place. Also, if you are suffering from any prolonging illness then do not forget to carry the medications prescribed by the doctor.

What is travel insurance?

People who are used to traveling might know about travel insurance. However, some people who are starting to travel might not know about travel insurance or travel insurance for trekking in Nepal. Simply put, travel insurance is not a free policy but a purchased plan which will cover your uncertain conditions while traveling. Such as financial risk for a certain amount and other losses which you might accidentally encounter them.

Additionally, trekking insurance is much more than travel insurance because it is mostly for trekkers who ascend above 4,000m altitude. The benefit of having trekking insurance is that it will cover up to 6,000m altitude.

What is Everest Base Camp Trek Insurance?

As you already know how thrilling Everest Base Camp trek is. And we have to make ourselves prepared for any kind of unpredictable situation. While trekking if you have to face any kind of hazards then Everest Base Camp Insurance comes to play. Everest Base Camp Insurance means trekking insurance that covers all the losses or provides an evacuation policy during Everest Base Camp Trek.

Similar to travel insurance this Everest Base Camp Insurance is a purchased plan which will also cover your accident, illness, altitude sickness, flight cancellation for both national as well as international, and many more. And this insurance price may vary on the basis of your age.

Why do you need Travel Insurance for EBC Trek?

Travel insurance for an Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek is essential for several reasons. Firstly, trekking to EBC involves various risks and challenges, including altitude sickness, accidents, unforeseen illnesses, and theft. Travel insurance provides financial protection and assistance in the event of such incidents, covering medical expenses, emergency evacuations, and lost or stolen belongings.

Secondly, EBC treks are subject to unpredictable weather conditions that can result in flight cancellations or delays. Travel insurance typically includes coverage for trip interruptions or cancellations, ensuring that you are reimbursed for non-refundable expenses such as flights, accommodations, and permits.

Furthermore, the remote and rugged nature of the EBC trek can make access to medical facilities challenging. Travel insurance often offers access to 24/7 emergency assistance services, which can help coordinate medical evacuations if necessary and provide guidance in critical situations.

In summary, travel insurance for an EBC trek provides peace of mind, financial protection, and support in the face of unforeseen circumstances, enabling trekkers to focus on enjoying their adventure while knowing they have a safety net in place.

People always do not have good intentions. Sometimes, for trekkers, personal belongings can be stolen. Similarly, trekkers have to face the problem of baggage missing during the flight. Even trekkers might lose valuable tools such as trekking gear which can force them to abandon their whole Everest Base Camp trek.

In such cases, baggage insurance becomes dominant and it will cover the loss, theft, or damage that you face during the trek.

  • Travel Assistance

The Everest Base Camp trek is the dream of many trekkers. There is something we humans cannot control no matter how hard we try to accomplish something and that is nature. Trekkers might come up against haphazard circumstances like landslides, track loss, accidents, and an avalanche.

Equivalent to this situation insurance will provide access to travel assistance services such as 24-hour hotline support, medical advice as well a language translation facility.

P.s. It is very important to go through your insurance policy thoroughly to understand the coverage that is provided, the limitations of your policy, and whether it meets your specific needs or not.

As far as I know WN does offer heli-evac (when medically necessary of course). However, WN's terms and conditions may well be different according to the home country. It should be clear on the WN website but if not, I would make contact and ask.

Why is the Everest base camp trek cheaper for Indians?

The Everest Base Camp trek will be more fulfilling and budget friendly for Indian citizens as they can get several deals and discounts on treks and accommodations in the area. One of the main reasons why traveling in Nepal is so much cheaper for Indians than for other nationalities is that there is a special provision for Indian citizens to enter the country without a visa. Indian travelers can also exchange their Indian currency for Nepali Rupees, which often leads to them getting lower prices on accommodation, food, and other necessities. However, one of the most attractive features that make traveling and trekking in Nepal significantly cheaper for Indians is the unique cultural connection between the two countries.

Nepal has a long and rich history of being highly influenced by Hinduism, and many of its traditions, superstitions, and beliefs are derived from Hinduism. This cultural resonance gives Indian travelers unique affinity and comfort in Nepal. This, in turn, allows them to form strong connections with the locals and acquire an understanding of the cultural intricacies that make Nepal so special. As a result, Indians often have access to better deals than other nationalities regarding prices for accommodation, food, and services.

Going on a trek in Nepal is made easier, as Indian language-speaking guides and Trekking companies are in abundance. Not only do they offer discounts to Indian customers, but they also make trek preparation simpler by providing Nepalese guides who are more affordable than their Indian equivalents. Likewise, guides better understand the local terrain, making pre-trip preparations more reasonable and ensuring the overall trekking experience is budget-friendly.

What's not to love about the EBC trek? Its renowned cultural connection, coupled with tremendously picturesque views of the highest peaks in the world, makes it a favorite amongst Indian travelers. Additionally, the relative ease of the trek and the deep discounts offered by major tour operators and trekking companies makes it a great deal! Not to mention, the use of Nepalese guides, who are more affordable than Indian guides, is a bonus. Overall, the EBC trek is an unforgettable journey into a mesmerizing landscape and a celebration of the culture and traditions of Nepal.

The price of the EBC trek is lower than most other treks in Nepal, and this makes it even more attractive to Indian travelers who are looking for an affordable way to explore the country. Aside from this, the level of service provided to Indian travelers is generally higher than other nationalities can expect on any trek in Nepal. Indian travelers often receive better deals on accommodation and food, and they tend to be treated more respectfully by the locals.

Nepal is a much more affordable destination for Indian travelers than for other nationalities. The visa-free entry to the country, the favorable exchange rate of Indian currency to Nepali Rupees, and the strong cultural ties between India and Nepal make the EBC trek and traveling in Nepal particularly economical for Indian travelers. Here are some other reasons:-

Firstly, unlike other nations, Indians receive a free visa to visit Nepal, while non-Indians must pay at least US$30 for theirs. This alone is a major factor in the difference in cost to Indians and non-Indians.

The cost of a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to Everest Base Camp, is much lower for Indians. Lukla flights use small airline planes, and the price is around INR 10,000 for Indians , making it significantly cheaper.

Indians benefit from reduced rates on travel and permit costs . Permits for the Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal (Sagarmatha National Park Fees) for SAARC Countries (India) cost lower than for other nationalities.

India and Nepal have a much closer relationship thanks to their geographical proximity, making them culturally similar . This understanding means that Indians are more familiar with Nepalese culture and customs, making it easy for Indian tourists to adjust to when on the EBC trek.

Cost of Everest Base Camp Trek For Indian

The cost of Everest Base, Camp Trek For Indians, has elicited much interest in recent years. The mesmerizing beauty of the highest peak in the world has stirred the interest of many people. The question that is on the mind of many potential trekkers is the cost of this thrilling adventure. Everest Base Camp Trek is mainly undertaken by adventure seekers well-equipped with the capacity and enthusiasm to explore the world’s most spectacular mountains. It is also an excellent experience for those with a passion for mountaineering. Therefore, the cost of this extraordinary experience deserves to be discussed in detail.

While trekking to the Everest Base Camp, Indian trekkers must invest significant money. The cost of the trek for trekkers begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. This flight usually ranges from $190 to $400, depending on the number of passengers. Additionally, the cost depends on whether the individuals fly directly to Lukla or choose to trek by land from Jiri.

Foreign agencies, local agencies, and Indian agencies all offer different packages and prices, but which one offers the best deals? First, foreign agencies are generally the most expensive of the three. This is mainly because they are often a one-stop shop. They offer everything from transportation, accommodations, and food to a seasoned guide during the trek but at high prices. These agencies can also offer complete medical insurance and provide quality equipment with professional guides. Although this luxury can be expensive, the peace of mind foreign agencies offer can also be a huge benefit.

Indian agencies provide an appealing and cost-effective alternative for those seeking to stretch their travel budget. Offering transportation, basic sustenance, and a tour guide, these companies provide quality services while keeping the price tag low. All the necessary equipment and safety measures are provided, ensuring no corners are cut for your enjoyment and well-being.

For a cost-effective option to traverse to Everest Base Camp, look no further than dealing with a local agency. Not only will they be able to provide reasonably-priced rates, but they also have intimate knowledge of the area, meaning they can also offer discounts on transport. Opting for a local agency might be just the ticket to get to the summit of the highest peak in the world.

In today's world, stepping into the unknown bears a vow of uncertainty. Traveling is no different, with unknowns as less as what kind of cuisine they could discover as critical as life-threatening circumstances. Many crave the unknown, the surprises, the bliss, the fear, what-ifs, and the inevitable consequences. Thus, it behooves us to mitigate risks on an individual level or a higher one.

It is in view of the same that Everest Base Camp Insurance for Indian travelers has become an integral part of a complete excursion. Risk assessments must be done for any expedition; acquiring such coverage is pertinent. With insurance, travelers have various benefits, such as medical treatment and evacuation. They can receive remedies for emergencies such as lost documents and personal items and use their claims for other mishaps such as fractured limbs, natural disasters, and more.

At the same time, it is essential to understand the terms and conditions associated with the policies. Different insurances have different clauses, and the know-how of which can save you a large headache in case of an emergency. This can be understood by looking at the list of inclusions and exclusions. One should look deeper into the policy provided to ensure that the required coverage is being provided.

Above all, understanding the region you are traveling to, the embassies, and the preventive measures required is of utmost importance. Knowing who to contact in a crisis should be the first action item. Apart from the area-specific measures, basic ones must also be followed, such as wearing a seatbelt when travelling, going prepared with a first-aid kit, and more.

Likewise, always check the limitations and exclusions before purchasing Everest Base Camp Trek insurance. Some insurers may exclude coverage for certain activities, such as off-road trips, extreme sports, or self-guided trekking. Reviewing the policy carefully and ensuring that all proposed activities are covered is essential. In addition, it is important to check the maximum reimbursement amount, which may differ depending on the insurance provider.

When budgeting or insurance for the Everest Base Camp Trek, the cost will vary depending on the individual's age, the duration of the trek, the scope of coverage, and the provider. However, a rough estimate is that insurance for a single person of average age and health should cost approximately $250-300 USD. Depending on individual factors and the chosen policy, this cost can be higher or lower.

The Everest Base Camp is a great place to explore and offers an experience that is unparalleled by others. With the right insurance coverage, it is just as wise for Indian travelers to go as it is rewarding. It all comes down to being prepared for the unexpected and resilient enough to face whatever comes your way. The journey can be safe and enjoyable by ensuring every aspect is taken care of.

Nepal offers a wealth of trekking and mountaineering opportunities, and EBC Nepal Trek permits cost for Indian citizens is only one of the considerations needed when planning a trekking adventure in the Himalayan country. For any trekkers wishing to explore the beauty and culture of Nepal, applying for and obtaining the necessary EBC Nepal Trek Permits is a vital step. Mount Everest stands tall and proud, a feat of nature that draws thousands each year to witness its magnificence. Within the Everest/Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies a playground of glacial valleys, deep forests, and Sherpa settlements, making it a paradise for trekkers and adventurers, and nature lovers alike. Reaching Everest Base Camp (EBC) is the main goal of many who visit this beautiful place. Yet, only those with special permits like Sagarmathanational park permit, Pasang Lamu Gaupalika, Local Permit, Tims card, and Gurishankar conservation permit will ultimately get to step foot on its hallowed ground.

  • Sagarmathanational Park permit:- Exploring the Sagarmatha National Park, established in 1976, is a true privilege. Home to some of the most majestic plants and animals of the Everest Region, a permit is required to enter the parklands. Visitors may delight in observing a snow leopard or Himalayan black bear in their natural habitat and other delightful treasures such as red pandas and musk deer. Birdwatchers can enjoy the thrills of finding a blood pheasant or a Himalayan Monal hidden in the trees. The cost of a permit to explore the magnificent sites of South Asia may vary, but generally, it costs about USD 30 (NPR 3,000). Don't worry if you happen to be from a SAARC (India) country, your permit cost is only about USD 15 (NPR 1,500). Nepalese citizens only need to pay USD 1 (NPR 100). Remember to bring along your passport or other types of identification to avail of your permit.
  •  Pasang Lamu Gaupalika:- Beginning October 1, foreign visitors to the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality of Solukhumbu District will be required to pay an entrance fee of about $20. This was decided during an executive council meeting on July 19th, despite opposition from tourism organizations in Kathmandu. Thus, a small payment will now help fund the local community's journey of growth and development. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entrance fee is a true testament to the saying, 'all are equal.' Regardless of your nationality and background, if you wish to explore the municipality, it will cost each person US$20 (or NPR 2000, on average).
  • Tims card: - Explorers who trek near the highest peak in the world, Mt. Everest, no longer need to secure the rarely required TIMS card before their journey. The Trekkers' Information Management System permit is usually mandatory. Still, in the case of the Everest Base Camp trek, the Nepalese Government has altered its policies, causing the TIMS card to become obsolete. So, yes, you do not need extra time and energy to secure that extra permit for your Everest Base Camp adventure. If you're planning on venturing off the beaten path, it's wise to pack a TIMS card with you. That way, you'll have the necessary credentials no matter where your sense of adventure takes you.
  • Gaurishankar conservation permit:- If you wish to experience something different, taking the road to Everest Base Camp is the best option. You get to drive to the small town of Jiri, located at the foot of the Everest region, and begin an extended trekking journey through the Gaurishankar Conservation Area. It is an incredible way to take in the region's natural beauty and explore trails seldom taken. Be sure to take your permit for entry into the Conservation Area, and you'll be able to create a uniquely memorable experience. If you plan to explore the wonders of Nepal, a permit for visitors is obtainable from the Nepal Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu. You can get this passport to the world of mountains, rivers, and adventure at the entrance gateway of the country, or you can purchase it from the main office at Pradarshani Marg. Foreigners will be charged US$ 30 (NRs 3,000), while people from SAARC or Indian countries can avail of this pass at a discounted rate of US$ 10 (NRS 1,000).

Accommodation Costs

If you want to lower your overall EBC trek cost, our standard package offers a luxurious 3-star hotel experience, moderate budget-friendly, and budget-friendly options. Our team can recommend more modest lodgings that grant comfort and convenience, or you can even look into arranging your accommodation for a more affordable stay. You'll save a bundle in the long run, whichever route you choose.

Accommodation costs for Indian citizens on the route to Everest Base Camp (EBC) vary greatly depending on the type of accommodation and the specific location. For Indian passport holders, the cost of staying in an Eco Lodge or lodge guesthouse, known as a teahouse, falls within the range of 1000-2000 Nrs per night. The cost of staying at one of the higher-end lodges with more amenities and better food will be substantially more, ranging from 2000-5000 Nrs.

At higher altitude camps, like Gorak Shep and EBC, where the cost of staying in the teahouses is higher, camping provides a relatively cheaper option. A camping tent can be hired, and the price usually includes food and water. This can cost as little as 100-5000 INR per night. Hiring a porter to carry the additional load of the camping tent and other supplies will also incur an extra cost depending on the porter and the duration of the journey.

The further away from Lukla you travel, the more expensive the teahouses become. This is primarily due to the lack of supply and demand for accommodation, as most travelers to EBC focus mainly on reaching the summit rather than spending additional time in the teahouses.

One great way Indian passport holders can save money on accommodation during their stay in Kathmandu is by being creative and customizing their accommodation options. This can involve seeking accommodations not often considered when traveling, such as guest houses and homestays. These accommodations can often be off the beaten path, offering a unique experience that allows visitors to get to know the city's culture.

Additionally, travelers can save money by renting a luxury apartment or villa through online platforms. Such platforms provide access to various accommodation options at multiple budgets that can offer a luxurious experience while still providing cost savings. Not only do such accommodations often come with a fully-equipped kitchen and access to private amenities such as a pool or a rooftop terrace, but they also offer more space than traditional hotels.

Another great way Indian passport holders can save money on accommodation during their stay in Kathmandu is by taking advantage of seasonal promotions. Hotels and other accommodation providers in Kathmandu often offer discounted rates over specific periods, so it’s important to keep an eye out for any potential promotions or discounts applicable to your stay. Additionally, it is always worth inquiring with hotels or rental companies about any specials or discounts available for Indian passport holders.

Flights and Transportation Costs

The trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC) is an adventurous journey that attracts people worldwide. Travelers from India make up a huge chunk of these tourists. The best way to reach EBC from India is by air. However, depending on a traveler's budget and preferences, various other options for transport can be explored.

The Airfare:

The airfare for Indian passport holders on the route to EBC usually varies depending on the traveler's origin, the flight's seasonality, and the availability of flights. Generally, the return flight cost starts from roughly INR 10,000 and can extend to INR 14,000 or higher.

The other transport cost:-

Journeying to the top of the mountain could be the most expensive - akin to a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. With a round-trip costing up to 20,000 INR per person, it should be remembered that the airline only permits a maximum of 10 kilos of luggage to be carried along. Thus, you ought to carefully select the possessions you bring to the trek and leave the rest in the comfort of your hotel in Kathmandu.

You could take a scenic jeep or bus ride from Kathmandu to Jiri and then trek up to Lukla. If you desire a more leisurely journey and have time available, this would allow you to immerse yourself in the Nepalese countryside, with plenty of food and lodging opportunities on the way. The cost for Public transport is estimated at between $17 and $30.

Effective from the first day of October 2022, air travel to and from Lukla will depart from Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu. Airline companies have already issued an official advisory and notification. As reflected on the purchased tickets, the flight's scheduled departure and arrival dates and times will remain unaltered. However, to comply with the new directive, passengers must retrace their steps from Lukla to Kathmandu via Ramechhap, necessitating an initial journey from Kathmandu.

The Manali airport, standing tall at an altitude of 474 meters above sea level, is situated 132 kilometers to the east of the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu. Enclosed in the picturesque Tamakoshi River Valley of Manthali, it serves as the gateway to the beautiful Ramechhap District, the administrative headquarters of Manthali. The journey from Kathmandu to Manthali, though spanning 132 kilometers, would take approximately 4 to 5 hours to traverse by car.

Venturing to Everest Base Camp is not an inexpensive journey, particularly regarding food. All provisions must be carried in and can be costly - $25-$35 a day. Don't forget to come prepared with a bit of extra cash in case your supplies start to run thin. A bowl of nourishing dal bhat (lentils and rice) may set you back from $4 to $7, depending on the elevation of the teahouse. Don't forget your trail snacks, like chocolate bars, biscuits, and instant noodles, which can range from $1 to $5 each.

For a refreshing burst of hydration on your trek, a cup of warm boiled water will cost you anywhere from 3 to 10, depending on your location. Never turn down an opportunity for clean and safe drinking water, bring along plenty of purification tablets to keep your tank full. The region has enforced a ban on plastic bottles, so consider investing in some top-notch water filtration. Grayl and Lifestraw are two of the best-known brands on the trek, so taking one of these reusable bottles with you will guarantee safe and clean drinking water from any source.

The cost of water is slightly higher than in other countries due to the terrain and availability. Bottled water along the route costs around Rs.50-500 per liter, and the water from the various rivers and streams can be significantly cheaper. However, it is essential to ensure that the water received is from a reliable source, as the cost of medical attention for water-borne illnesses far outweighs spending a bit more for a good quality water bottle.

It is always best to opt for vegetarian/vegan cuisine while on your journey, as meat that may be available cannot be trusted. Any meat found on the trail is usually flown from Kathmandu to Lukla and carried up by mules or porters. Therefore, determining how long it’s been without refrigeration can be complex. Additionally, it is essential to note that the Sherpa respects the animal kingdom, so they do not hunt or kill animals.

Travelers can reduce airfare costs by booking their tickets in advance and opting for a layover or two. This will help them secure cheaper seats. They can also purchase economy class round trip tickets with all airport taxes.

Important Notice:

We'd like to bring to your attention a crucial update regarding your upcoming journey with TrekNomads. Due to ongoing developments and essential maintenance at Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport, your flight to Lukla will be rerouted from Kathmandu to Ramechhap Airport. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has mandated that flights to and from Lukla operate through Ramechhap since the 2019 post-monsoon season. This arrangement, initially temporary, has been extended, and CAAN is considering a permanent shift for all Lukla flights from Ramechhap. While some flights will certainly still go from Kathmandu, they are not always guaranteed, even when booked in advance and can be subject to unplanned and prolonged delays.  If your flight departs from Ramechhap Airport, your journey will commence on day two of your itinerary. You will travel for four to five hours to the town of Ramechhap, where TrekNomads will arrange accommodation and an evening meal. While the roads may be bumpy, this journey is essential to ensure your Everest Base Camp dream becomes a reality. Day three begins with an early start to be at the airport and a flight to Lukla. TrekNomads ensures you're on one of the first flights from Ramechhap, allowing for the best available weather monitoring and a swift start to your trek.

On the return, you'll fly from Lukla to Ramechhap and embark on an adventurous drive back to Kathmandu. Please note that traffic entering Kathmandu can be significant, extending the journey to approximately six to seven hours with breaks for food and rest.

Day 5: Namche Bazaar Acclimatisation

Today is the first of the two days set aside for "acclimatization." Health experts recommend we stay active and moving during the rest day too instead of being idle. We either spend the day taking a day's hike to Everest viewpoint or relaxing and exploring Namche Bazaar itself. Namche Bazzar is the main centre of the Everest (Khumbu) region and has government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, restaurants, a bakery, and a colourful market. Dinner and overnight stay at a lodge. Your dinner is included in our Mt Everest base camp trek package. You can view the  everest base camp trek cost here.

Day 6:   Tengboche

Altitude:  12,697 ft (3,870 m)

Trek Duration:  5 -6 hours, 10 Km

Upon breakfast in Namche, we set out towards Tengboche, enjoying a superb view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam and a close-up view of Thamserku. The trail today is more or less smooth with few ascents and descents. The view of the magnificent Himalayas keeps us company all through the journey. Along the way, we can spot wildlife Musk Deer, a herd of Himalayan Thar and multicoloured pheasants. The trail goes gradually down up to Kayangjuma. After having a relaxed lunch at Phunki Thenga, we gear up for a slightly tougher climb through the pine forests before we reach Tengboche. Tengboche is a great place for close-up views of Mt Ama Dablam and the popular monastery of the Everest region. Overnight stay at a lodge.

Day 7:   Dingboche

Altitude:  14,468 ft (4,410m)

Trek Duration:  5-6 hours, 9 Km

With mountains at its backdrop, the monastery at Tengboche looks more spectacular in the morning. we can take pictures of the monastery and the scenery around and as usual start the day's journey. to Pangboche village. We pass through several Chortens and Mani walls and small villages. The place where we stop for lunch allows a fantastic close-up view of Mt Ama Dablam. In the afternoon, we walk north to Pheriche or take the eastward trail beneath the towering north face of Mt Ama Dablam. From here onwards, the walk is fairly moderate as we enter the Imja Valley. The valley gradually unfolds as we approach the confluence of the Lobuche River. We descend into the river and begin the last and steepest climb of the day up to Dingboche. On arrival at Dingboche, overnight lodge

Day 8:   Dingboche Acclimatisation

We spend our second day of acclimatization at Dingboche. A refreshing breakfast while admiring a looming Ama Dablam (6,856m) to the south is fantastic. To better appreciate Mt Ama Dablam, Mt Lhotse and numerous other peaks visible from Dingboche, we climb the ridge on the north behind the village. This will be an ideal acclimatizing excursion. We can see three of the world's six highest peaks, Mt Lhotse, Mt Makalu, and Mt Cho Oyu. To the west, loom the towering peaks of Cholatse (6440 m) and Taboche (6542 m). As we look northwest, we see an array of peaks rising at the head of the Khumbu Khola valley. The Lobuche West and Lobuche East peaks are most dominant along with Lhotse, which stands over 8500 m (8501m). Overnight lodge

Day 9:   Lobuche

Altitude:  16,207 ft/ 4,940 m

Trek Duration:  4-5hours, 7 Km

After breakfast, we pass through the valley lunch place at Thukla. After trekking for an hour, we reach the memorial of Scott Fischer (American mountaineer) and Babu Chiri Sherpa (a Nepali mountain guide who summited Mount Everest ten times) who perished on an Everest climbing mission. As the trail drops to the Khumbu Glacier moraine, we find ourselves facing several great peaks - Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalangur Himal. We are now in the vicinity of Everest, but the great mountain remains elusive. Mt Nuptse towers to the right as the trail crosses the Khumbu Glacier. As we pass along a murmuring stream leaving the Khumbu Glacier behind, we now begin to feel a little out of breath due to high altitude. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 10:   Gorak Shep / Everest Base Camp

Altitude:  16,962 ft (5,170 m) - 17,598 ft (5,364 m)

The trail to Gorak Shep goes ahead through the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. Ahead on the trail we see the crest of the north ridge of Everest along with Mt. Pumori, Mt. Lingtern, Mt. Khumbutse, Mt. Nuptse, etc. A small ascent would take us to Thangma Riju from where we perceive a 360-degree vista of snowy mountains. Climbing steeply up to the top through the torrent of Changri Glacier, we catch our first glimpse of Kala Patthar, Mt. Pumori. As we reach Gorak Shep, we will find snow-capped mountains looming all around us, including the top of the world - Mt. Everest. After a brief lunch and rest, we take the trail to Everest Base Camp through the once-vast Gorak Shep Lake. Continuing the EBC trek  straight ahead, upon reaching the Everest Base Camp we appreciate the Everest climbers who brave the hazardous route through the Khumbu icefall. Mountaineer's tents stand out in bright colours against the monotony of grey surroundings (especially in the Spring). Nuptse, Khumbuste, and Pumori are the mountains we can view from the base camp. Everest is not visible from here back to Gorak Shep overnight lodge.

Day 11:   Kalapatthar Summit / Periche

Altitude:  18,192 ft / 5,545 m - 14,341ft/ 4,371 m

Trek Duration:  3+4 hours, 6+10 Km

Today is the climax of our trip. We start early in the morning to catch the dramatic views from Kala Patthar and witness the first light of day caress the peaks of the mountains, particularly, Mt. Everest. However, we need to prepare for an early morning departure, amid predawn darkness and cold temperature (-10 to -14 C).

Further, there is always the potential for chilly winds which are quite common. Familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse tower to the east even as Everest begins to reveal itself. During the ascent to Kala Patthar, we can pause to catch a breath at several outstanding viewpoints from where we can snap great pictures. After several hours of ascent, we reach Kala Patthar. From Kala Patthar, we scramble up to the top of a rocky outcrop marked by cairns and prayer flags. Mind-blowing Himalayan panorama unfolds before our eyes as they wander

Return to Gorak Shep and after breakfast trek back to Periche overnight at a lodge.

We cross the bridge over Imja Khola and pass through the Deboche village Tengboche The trail to Namche Bazar clings to the steep wooded slope beyond Kyangjuma, winding through several bends. We look out for wildlife such as mountain goats, snow leopards, and colourful pheasants while passing through the forest by the trail. We have enough time in Namche overnight at the lodge.

Day 13:   Lukla

Is acclimatisation essential for the Everest Base Camp trek?

Acclimatization is essential because Everest Base Camp is at an altitude of (17,595 ft / 5,363 m) where oxygen levels are low. You might get Acute Mountain Sickness if you don't acclimatise properly to the high altitude. Acute Mountain Sickness is also known as AMS in trekking parlance. Namche Bazaar and Dingboche(11,286 ft / 3,440 m) are where you will stay for an extra day for acclimatization.

You can spend the day visiting the Everest viewpoint or relaxing and exploring Namche Bazaar. It is in the main centre of the Everest (Khumbu) region and has government offices, shops, restaurants, a bakery, ATMs, cyber cafes, and a beautiful market.

At Dingboche, you will go on a hike to Nangkartshang Peak (5,615 M) It takes about 2-3 hours hike from Dingboche to reach the top of Nangkartshang Peak. You will get the best view of Imja Valley including the three highest mountains in the world Mt. Makalu (8,463m), Lhotse (8,749m), Cho Oyu (8,201m) and Island peak (6,189m), Amadablam (6,812m), Kangtega (6,782m), Thamserku (6,623m), Taboche (6,542m), Cholatse (6,440m), etc.

Physical fitness can help prevent AMS to some level but does not rule it out completely.

Read about AMS here .

What if I get Acute Mountain Sickness on the Everest Base Camp trek? Are there any medicines to cure AMS?

The best way to avoid AMS is to follow simple tips before and during the trek.

Avoid over-exerting yourself at the beginning of the trek. Climb slow, and enjoy the views. Trekking is not a race.

Drink plenty of water. Try to drink at least 3-4 litres of water during the trek. Follow the 2-sip rule - after every few hundred metres, take 2-3 sips of water.

NO Alcohol, Cigarettes and intoxicants before and during the trek. (These are things to avoid after the trek as well.) This increases your risk of getting AMS multifold.

Eat lite and easy-to-digest foods - fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates (rice, daal). Avoid fried foods, bread, noodles, and non-vegetarian items during the trek. These can cause stomach upset - which can cause dehydration and AMS. Also avoid any yak milk products during the trek if you haven’t tried them before.

Get enough sleep - Sleep for at least 8-9 hours during the night.

Check medicines with your doctor before taking them. Avoid over the counter drugs. Avoid medicines suggested by fellow trekkers, online blogs or google - unless you are very sure about it. You may never know how medicines may react to your body at high altitudes.

Make sure you are physically and mentally fit to take any trek. Exercise regularly at least 5-6 months in advance, reduce stress levels and be healthy.

Some of the symptoms you can experience when you have AMS are:

Disturbed sleep

Loss of appetite/nausea

Shortness of breath

Palpitation

Swelling of the hands and face

AMS does not discriminate between new and experienced trekkers; if you notice any of the above symptoms, please inform your trek leader immediately.

Our trek leaders and guides have received basic first-aid training and can effectively monitor you. However, if the situation gets worse, you might have to visit a doctor.

Do I need to carry a medical kit on the Everest Base camp trek?

We advise you to consult your doctor regarding the medicines you will need to carry. However, while our trek leaders do have a first aid kit along with a portable oxygen cylinder, we suggest you bring regular medicines as advised by your doctor.

Are toilets/washrooms available on the Everest base camp trek?

Most of the teahouses on the Everest Base Camp trail have western-style toilets. It is strongly advised to bring your toilet paper and other sanitary essentials. Depending on the package you choose, you may get a private (in the room) or shared toilet in the tea house. Please note that the water in the toilets may be freezing cold.

How do I get the Nepal Visa for the Everest Base Camp trek?

Indians do not require a visa to enter Nepal. Citizens of countries other than India will be required to purchase a Visa. The Visa fee can range between USD 30 and USD 50, depending on the days you must stay in Nepal. We always recommend getting a 30-day visa because there is a chance of unprecedented delays and setbacks during the trek.

Are ATMs on the Everest Base Camp trek?

ATMs are only available in Namche Bazaar and Lukla. However, the services may stop working or even run out of cash. So, we suggest you bring some extra cash on the trek for food, snacks, and other necessities.

What is the perfect time to trek to EBC?

You can trek to Everest Base Camp during two seasons. The first period runs from April to May (Spring), and the second from October to November (Autumn). The latter is considered a post-monsoon period, with fewer chances of rain along the trail. During the autumn, the Sagarmatha region is in full bloom, providing beautiful picturesque views for you to enjoy. During the spring season, many indigenous flowers also put on a colourful sight.
