With its origins in the late 18th century, the Underground Railroad (UGRR) was a network of African Americans and white allies who provided safe houses and different resources to enslaved persons who seek freedom from the South.

The Transatlantic Slave Trade

The Transatlantic Slave Trade was the largest forced migration of people across international oceanic borders which brought millions of Africans to the Americas. This event informed the cultural, social, and economic development of African descent in American culture.

One of the most iconic images that represents the horrors in the transportation of enslaved people was the Brookes slave ship diagram. Spearheaded by a British abolitionist group, the diagram illustrated how they were packed in tight spaces with little room for movement.

The Sale of Enslaved People

Enslaved Africans were brought to the Americas as a source of plentiful and cheap labor versus indentured servants who were poor Europeans. An internal slave trade also happened where they were forced to walk over long distances to be sold at a slave auction in the South.

Working as an Enslaved Person

Enslaved Africans worked both inside and outside of the master's plantation under extremely harsh conditions. While many recognized that they picked cotton, they harvested other crops like rice, sugar, corn, and tobacco, but they did so for their masters; not for them.

Food for the Soul

What is called soul food  today has its origins attached to slavery. Enslaved individuals were forced to eat the animal parts their masters discarded. Enslaved chefs who worked in the house created dishes that Americans consume like gumbo, ox tails, and greens.

The Turning Point

The Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th Amendment, and Juneteenth were events that impacted the end of slavery. While they did make an impact, it didn't stop the oppression of African Americans in systems like the Jim Crow laws and early mass incarceration.

Where Do We Go From Here?

While the Civil Rights of 1964 marked a shift in social justice for African Americans since the UGRR, the idea of freedom seeker has never been lost as they continue the fight for racial equity among various power structures in the United States.

Google Earth: Remaking the Classic

Broaden your horizons with guided tours in Earth’s new feature, Voyager.

The world at your fingertips

Experience our planet with the all-new Google Earth by diving into fascinating landscapes and inspiring global stories. With a major visual and functional refresh, Google Earth introduced exciting new features and tools. The highlight is Voyager, a storytelling platform with partner-authored content. Ubilabs is proud to be a contributor, supporting Google in the content production and processing for some of Voyager’s most exciting stories. Among them you’ll find two of our projects, Earth View and Miniatur Wunderland. Voyager takes you on trips around the globe, showcasing the stunning Earth View images and the real-life counterparts to the model railroad tracks. Wherever you go, a new story awaits!

With voyager there is always something more to do and learn about.

Gone are the days of dusty old atlases! Since its beginning, Google Earth has made the exploration of our vast planet a fun experience. After two years in the making, a  remake of the classic Google Earth  has finally been launched, bringing the world even closer to your doorstep than before.

google earth voyager guided tour the underground railroad

Voyager tells a global tale

One of Google Earth’s exciting new features is Voyager, a platform for stories around the globe. With Voyager, Google Earth not only takes you to your desired destination, but immerses you into a global adventure where there’s a lot to do, learn, and explore. Starting on launch day April 18, Google features compelling partner-authored content ranging from culture, to wildlife, to global treasures, spinning a tale around the globe.

For the past few months, Ubilabs has been supporting Google in the production and processing of this content. Coming up with unique approaches to storytelling and translating these ideas to Voyager’s functional and visual features has been an exciting experience. We are especially proud to have two of our favorite projects, Earth View and Miniatur Wunderland, be among the first Voyager stories to be published during Google Earth launch week.

Earth View: Beauty from above

From breathtaking coastlines to rugged snow-covered mountains – viewing the earth from above opens up a unique perspective. With  Earth View , users can access high-quality satellite images showcasing areas of exceptional beauty. What originally started out as a Google Earth “Easter egg” (i.e. a hidden function) has quickly become a source of inspiration for many. Having worked closely with Google on the Earth View layer for the past months, we’re excited for our Voyager content going live. Not only can our  favorite Earth View images  be accessed via markers on the globe, a brand-new color bar allows for a unique navigation through the images, creating a visually compelling global narrative.

Miniature worlds around the globe

Who wouldn’t want to be a kid again, given the chance? When creating 360° panoramic views for a miniature  Street View Trek of Miniatur Wunderland ’s model railway world in 2016, we were able to relive our childhood dreams of being a conductor. With the all-round refresh of Google Earth, we were given the opportunity to dive into the little worlds again. Creating a storyline around the  marvels of Wunderland , we connected a variety of real places around the globe with their miniature equivalents in the model railway world. In Google Earth’s Voyager, you can tour the valleys of the Grand Canyon, stop by the past U.S. presidents at Mount Rushmore, and go to a soccer match in Hamburg’s stadium, all while checking up on the details provided by Wunderland’s tiny renditions.

New features for continued exploration

Not only will the new Google Earth inspire explorers young and old with the immersive storytelling platform Voyager, but will surprise users with new tools and a streamlined interface. If you’re curious, hit “I’m feeling lucky” and let Google Earth take you on an unpredictable adventure. “Knowledge Cards” add to the experience, providing all the intriguing bits and pieces of information that make exploring our planet so worthwhile. The new Google Earth app will be available on the web via Chrome browser at  http://earth.google.com/web  and a native  Android app  available via the Google Play store. It rolls out on iOS and other browsers soon.

EDIT: We are Webby 2018 winners!

We are very proud to announce that we were awarded four "Internet Oscars" this year. Our Google Earth Voyager stories " Total Eclipse of the Sun " and " Google Earth View " were nominated in the categories "Best Data Visualization", "Best User Experience", and "Technical Achievement" and  not only won People's Voice in all of them but also a Jury Award ! We are beyond happy about the recognition of our Voyager stories and would like to thank all of you who voted.

Sometimes home is where the heart is, even if that home is very far away. With This is Home, Google lets you visit traditional homes from around the world. You'll even get to know about the history behind each of these places and get a glimpse inside the unique structures with Google Street View.

For instance, Jordan's House of Hair is a string of tents constructed from the hair of camels and other animals. It's located in the middle of the desert, but some of the other houses on this tour are located in even more far-flung regions than that.

4. Stop and Smell the Flowers

Stop and Smell the Flowers is a Google virtual tour that takes you on a journey through some of the most breathtaking botanical gardens and arboretums around the world. This tour highlights a total of eleven places, ranging from countries like Russia, Sweden, and Canada, to the Netherlands.

If you're into gardening, then this one is for you.

5. Pilgrimage to Mecca

Every year, many thousands of Muslims embark on a pilgrimage to Mecca, a holy city for practitioners of the Islamic faith. Google's virtual tour lets you learn about this practice, from landing at the Hajj Terminal Jeddah Airport to the final destination of Masjid al-Haram.

Have you ever had an interest in bustling flea markets? Experience them yourself with this Google Maps virtual tour. This tour walks you through nine of the most iconic markets worldwide, such as France's Les Puces de Saint-Ouen, India's Anjuna Flea Market, and London's Portobello Market.

While we're still on the subject: If you want to plan a dream vacation, here are some easy ways that you can travel more cheaply .

8. Comic Geek Destinations

Unleash your inner geek with this virtual tour that takes you on a trip through a bunch of iconic comic book spots. Comic Geek Destinations curates a total of ten locations known for appearing in various fictional universes. One of these locations is the Parkwood Estate. If you feel like doing some light reading after this tour, here are the best ways to read comics online for free .

9. Iconic Film Locations in the Mediterranean

Are you more of a movie buff than a comic book aficionado? Try out this tour featuring iconic film locations in the Mediterranean.

In this tour, you can travel to each selected landmark where a movie scene has been shot. If you don't want to use Google Earth to find these spots, however, here's how to track down your favorite film locations using websites.

10. International Year of the Reef

Coral reefs have been in peril for many decades now due to the threat of global warming. To raise awareness on this issue, a Google Maps virtual tour was set up to help familiarize the public with the basics.

With the International Year of the Reef, you can see how these marvelous underwater colonies are formed over millions of years. Each chapter in the tour also discusses fundamental topics like coral reef diversity. Additionally, it includes video highlights and subaqueous street view images.

11. In Mandela's Footsteps

Sometimes you can take a virtual walk through history. In Mandela's Footsteps lets you follow the journey of the legendary political leader and former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.

This tour highlights the places that played a critical role in Mandela's life. For example, there's a page devoted to the University of Fort Hare. It was one of the first institutions in the region that allowed non-white people to study for a post-secondary degree.

12. Reading the ABCs from Space

Perhaps one of the most intriguing virtual tours available on Google Earth is Reading the ABCs from Space. Developed by NASA, this tour consists of twenty-six chapters that reveal locations on the planet that form an alphabet from space.

Our personal favorite is the letter "J" off the coast of Australia, which is made up of a coral reef.

If space is your jam, here are great resources to learn all about Mars .

13. The Beautiful Game

If you're in a World Cup spirit, you might want to check out The Beautiful Game. This Google Earth tour takes you on a trip through some of the planet's most unforgettable soccer destinations. The destinations include the Allianz Arena in Munich, Barcelona's Camp Nou, and Old Trafford in England.

14. National Parks of the United States

Looking for natural wonders closer to home? Especially ones that will help you appreciate the great outdoors?

If so, then you need to check out the National Parks of the United States. It's a virtual tour that will take you on a journey through the most pristine areas of wilderness from coast to coast, ranging from Acadia National Park to Denali.

Use a Google Tour to Visit the World

While all of these virtual tours are absolutely amazing, we've barely scratched the surface in just how many there are. If you go deep-diving through the archives, you'll also find that the tours are divided into subcategories like nature, culture, education, and street view. The best thing about the tours is that they're entirely free. A reliable, high-bandwidth connection to view them is a must, however.

For those that want to dig deeper into this app, it might surprise you to learn that Google Earth is an offshoot of Google Maps. With that in mind, take some time to understand how Google Maps works .

Stuck at home and long to go outside? Here are a few more virtual outdoors tours you can do from home and live sightseeing webcams you can stream .

Updated Google Earth can give you guided tours and more

Revamped Google Earth will show you the world

google earth voyager guided tour the underground railroad

Google has launched a redesigned Google Earth with some nifty new features.

A guided tour function called Voyager is easily the coolest, with short videos linked to specific locations around the globe. There is something really exciting about looking at the exact location where David Attenborough shot a documentary alongside the clip, or getting a guided tour of the Tanzanian Gombe National Park by primate expert Jane Goodall.

If you feel like learning about somewhere random, Earth has adopted 'I’m Feeling Lucky' from Google’s main search engine, so you can be instantly transported to a random location at the click of a button. Once there, another new feature comes into play: Knowledge Cards.

Knowledge Cards are panels that pop up with useful information about the area that you are looking at. They are available on a remarkable amount of results, so we have to assume that a lot of the information is being harvested from Google’s search results for these locations.

Show me the world

Google has finally started bringing some of its search clout into Earth. It’s now capable of handling more obscure search terms, so if you want to see the capital city of a country but don’t know its name, you can search ‘Capital of Italy’ and it’ll appear.

That said, if you ask for the capital of South Africa, you get a list of results for businesses in South Africa called Capital. It clearly isn’t using the full power of Google’s search to generate answers yet, as the same search on the main browser brings up South Africa’s three capitals.

The lack of integration shows itself in other ways too. You can ask for the tallest hotel in Dubai and get nothing, while over in Google you get the answer suggested before you’ve finished typing. Earth will show you hotels in Dubai, but the tallest building was what we were really looking for to test out the 3D function.

Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox

Get the hottest deals available in your inbox plus news, reviews, opinion, analysis and more from the TechRadar team.

Tap on the 3D button and Earth will turn the map you’re currently looking at into a 3D rendered map that you can navigate around. 3D rendering has existed on Google Maps since 2006 but now there are additional controls. You can drag around the map as usual, shift and drag which keeps whatever you’ve selected as a fixed point, or Ctrl/Cmd and drag which keeps you as the fixed point, making you feel as though you are floating above your chosen landmark.

According to The Verge this redesign was two years in the making, and while it has some cool features, it still feels a way off. One thing this update has done is make Google Earth into an educational tool, which goes some way to explain why it deserves to be an entity in its own right and not just a feature of Google Maps.

The new Google Earth is currently available on Chrome browsers and Android phones, with an iOS version and other browser support in development.

Google Earth gets Voyager guided tours and 3D views; now available for Android and Chrome

The redesigned version of google earth is available today for chrome browser and android..

google earth voyager guided tour the underground railroad

The revamped version of Google Earth is finally here. The company is now rolling out an update for Google Earth for the web and Android.  The redesign took over two years, and includes a number of new features to make it social and interactive.

Google has added something called Voyager which will basically allow you to browse “interactive guided tours” created by scientists, nonprofits and other “storytellers”. For instance, a collection called “This is Home”, highlights “traditional” houses around the world like reed houses in Peru or Bedouin tents in Jordan. Initially, Google has partnered with BBC and Sesame Street but the company says it will continue to add more partners in the near future.

Google has also integrated its Knowledge Graph into Earth, meaning every location you search comes with “Knowledge Card” that highlights major facts about the location. The redesigned Google Earth also have the “I m feeling lucky” button. Essentially, if a user clicks on that button in Google Earth, it will take them to one of 20,000 random destinations that were curated by Google staff. There’s also a new 3D button that will allow users to explore new places in 3D instead of the archaic flat satellite imagery.

The updated version of Google Earth is already live. The new features are available today for Google Chrome browser and Android users. Google says it will bring them to iOS later in the coming months.

Festive offer

Google Earth offers a way to view detailed satellite images of the Earth in a simulation of the globe. The service was originally launched in 2001 under the name EarthViewer 3D.

Google Earth Gets Massive Update With Guided Tours, 3D View, and Voyager Features

New Google Earth

As we reported earlier , Google was planning to bring some significant changes to Google Earth. And today, Google has finally pushed a major update for it, which brings a slew of new features onboard that makes Google call it the "new Google Earth."

One of the major features that debuted on the platform is Google Earth Voyager. It offers “guided tours” around the planet presented by Jane Goodall or BBC Earth. There seems to be an excellent selection of tours listed under the list in Voyager. If you are looking to discover new locations for your next trip - Voyager is all you need.

Related Story Google Is Combining Android, Pixel, And Other Hardware, Software Teams Into A Single Unit Called ‘Platforms and Devices’ To Speed Up Work On AI

In addition, the tech giant has also added Knowledge Cards to Earth, which let you access in-depth information about places that you want to visit or are interested in. You can read these Knowledge Cards whenever you want to get enlightened by new information. These cards are also a part of Voyager feature. Other than searching for new places on the planet, you can also fetch Knowledge Cards to find about related places.

Regardless of how nifty these features are, you do need to know what you want to search on Google Earth. For the ones who have no idea about what to search, you can always use Google's old school "I'm feeling lucky" feature. If you're a curious globe trotter then the revampled interface of Google Earth would please your eyes. Besides, you can also click on the die icon in the left sidebar to let Google Earth fly you to a random location on the planet.

Google writes about new Home section under Voyager :

We hope that after visiting your house in the new Google Earth, you'll be inspired to see someone else’s. Get started with a special Voyager story called This is Home , a journey into traditional homes from cultures around the world. You’re invited to step inside a Peruvian chuclla , a Bedouin tent and a Greenlandic IIoq , and meet the people who live there. Check back to visit more homes in the coming months.

There is a new 3D button that lets you take an upclose and personal view of famous landmarks on the planet. If you come across your favorite landmark, then you can share it as a virtual postcard with your friends. Google has also included a new search function to Google Earth VR, which also bears support for Oculus headsets.

The better and bigger Google Earth update has overhauled the entire outlook of the software. You can have more fun on Google Earth with all the brand new features. It is currently live on Google Chrome and it will be available of Android, later this week. For iOS and other browser users, you will have to wait for some time.
