Paul McCartney once wrote that “your mother should know.” But it was Elsie Starkey, the mother of Ringo Starr , who was key to the creation of his first studio recording outside of The Beatles . Sentimental Journey, released in the UK on March 27, 1970 ,  was an album of remakes of standards designed to reflect Elsie’s favorite songs. They were the ones that she and the Starkey family would sing around the house and at special gatherings.

Starr began recording of the LP in late October, 1969, while The Beatles were still together. But by the time he finished, the group’s demise was close to being confirmed. The McCartney album followed three weeks after Sentimental Journey and, by the time Let It Be was released in May, The Beatles were effectively no more.

The 12-track Ringo Starr album was produced by the group’s trusted confidant, the much-missed George Martin. But it was constructed with the deliberate approach of using a different arranger on each track. They made an impressive line-up, too, with Quincy Jones at the reins for “Love Is A Many Splendoured Thing.” Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees on “Bye Bye Blackbird”; Elmer Bernstein for “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You.” Martin himself arranged Johnny Mercer’s “Dream,” with instrumentation by Martin’s orchestra throughout.

By special arrangement

English composers Ron Goodwin and Les Reed and jazz maestro Johnny Dankworth were also among the arrangers. So were American producer Richard Perry and Cuban musician Chico O’Farrill. Jazz saxophonist Oliver Nelson and Beatles collaborator Klaus Voorman were also on board, and McCartney did the arrangement for Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust.”

The pub shown on the album cover, the Empress, was in Wellington Terrace, off High Park Street, Toxteth, around the corner from where Ringo grew up. Elsie Starkey often frequented the hostelry, which hosted live music events for many years. In 2022, the  Liverpool Echo  reported that it was to be transformed into a Beatles-themed hotel.  Sentimental Journey reached No.7 in the UK and, when released in the US a month later, No.22 there. The solo career of the man who would become Sir Richard Starkey was up and running.

Songs are a great way to learn English. They’re good listening practice and research shows that singing along is a powerful way to improve your fluency and learn new words. Here’s a beautiful song sung by Doris Day and a lesson on some of the vocabulary first.

There are two videos here so make sure you scroll down for the song.

Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah What are you doing? I’m warming up for the song. What song? Today’s lesson is about a song. Remember? Oh, that’s been cancelled. Oh. You can go home now. Really? Yeah, we don’t need you. Oh.

This week’s lesson comes in the form of a song, and the wonderful Doris Day is the singer. The song is about a journey – a sentimental journey. Sentimental? It means it touches her heart. So it’s a journey she’s taking for emotional rather than practical reasons. Perhaps there’s a time or place in your life that you feel sentimental about too? Maybe it’s somewhere you yearn to return to. Or maybe there’s someone you long to see again. ‘Yearn’ and ‘long’ are both verbs here, and they have very similar meanings. We use them to talk about things we desire or want very much. We use ‘yearn’ when it’s somethings that difficult or impossible to do. And we use ‘long’ when it’s something that won’t happen soon. You’ll also hear this word in the song. This word doesn’t exist in English. It’s not a real word. The song writer made it up and I think it’s my favourite word in the song. So listen to the song and tell me what your favourite words are. And I have a question too. What sentimental journey would you like to take if you could. Is there a place or a time in your life that you’d like to revisit? Tell us in the comments.

But I thought the song was cancelled. No. Doris Day is singing it.

My sentimental journey is going back to my childhood time. Thank you Vicki for sharing this lovely song, but I would like to ask you. What’ s the meaning of ” spent each dime” and ” wild anticipation”?

' src=

Oh great questions. ‘Dime’ is an informal word for a 5 cent coin in the US. When she says she’s in wild anticipation she means that she is very excited about what will happen in the future.

' src=

Dime is 10 cent coin.

Indeed it is Gay. 🙂

I love the line “Countin’ every mile of railroad track that takes me back…“

I’ve always loved this song… from the time I was a child of five. I am originally from Gettysburg PA. This past weekend I went to a historic event there, and although I enjoyed it, ever since I returned I’ve been singing aloud “ sentimental journey“, sentimental journey home. I now know every word of the lyrics and think this is one of the most heartfelt songs ever written. Doris Day sings it beautifully and Les Brown’s band plays it perfectly! Have often wondered if it was an emotional journey or physical one. Now I know and it makes me feel incredible longing.

Oh what a lovely comment Susan! Thank you for this. It indeed is a beautiful and heartfelt song that has touches me too.

sentimental journey video

Sentimental Journey was originally manufactured and delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces for war service in 1944 where she flew missions in the Pacific Theater. After the war she flew for training, testing and at-sea rescue missions and was eventually sold for surplus and used as a fire bomber. In 1978 the aircraft was purchased by a Commemorative Air Force (CAF) member and donated to the newly formed Arizona unit of the world-famous CAF. She was meticulously restored and is today maintained in tip-top condition and operated by all-volunteer crews from the membership of CAF Airbase Arizona.

The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force, based at many airfields in central and southern England, and the Fifteenth Air Force, based in Italy, complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in the Combined Bomber Offensive to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for the invasion of France in 1944. The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific, early in World War II, where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields.

Doris Day (born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff, April 3, 1922) is an American actress, singer, and animal rights activist, who began her career as a big band singer in 1939, but only began to be noticed after her first hit recording, "Sentimental Journey", in 1945. After leaving the Les Brown & His Band of Renown to try a solo career, she started her long-lasting partnership with Columbia Records, which would remain her only recording label. The contract lasted from 1947 to 1967, and included more than 650 recordings, making Day one of the most popular and acclaimed singers of the 20th century. In 1948, after being persuaded by Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne and her agent at the time, Al Levy, she auditioned for Michael Curtiz, which led to her being cast in the femal… more »

Barbra Streisand Leaves Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone and More in Tears with SAG Life Achievement Award Speech

"I want to thank you for giving me so much joy just watching all of you on the screen," the film icon told the crowd

sentimental journey video

Barbra Streisand accepted the SAG Life Achievement Award with a speech that brought her fellow actors to tears.

At the 2024 SAG Awards on Saturday, Jennifer Aniston and Bradley Cooper , the star of 2018's A Star Is Born (Streisand starred in the 1976 version), took the stage to introduce Streisand, 81, and give her flowers.

Following Aniston and Cooper's introductions, the Funny Girl star took the stage, and she was met with a standing ovation and emotional responses from several audience members, including Anne Hathaway , Emma Stone and later, Joey King, all of whom had teary eyes.

After joking this is the best award to get "because you know in advance you're going to get it," Streisand began, "Thank you SAG-AFTRA. I'm very proud to be a member for over 60 years. I can't quite believe it."

The icon went on to recall her love of films, specifically black-and-white foreign films, as a teenager in Brooklyn, as well as seeing "the most beautiful actor," Marlon Brando on the big screen for the first time.

"That make-believe world was much more pleasant than anything I was experiencing. I didn't like reality," Streisand said. "I wanted to be in the movies, even though I knew I didn't look like any of the other women on the screen. My mother said, 'You better learn to type,' but I didn't listen. And somehow, someway — thank you, God — it all came true."

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty

Streisand also thanked Funny Girl director William Wyler and cinematographer Harry Stradling, noting that they were "extraordinary" and "had no problem with a young woman who had opinions."

She also noted that she "never went to college," and "always thought acting was my education."

Kevin Mazur/Getty

"It's really a privilege to be part of this profession," she continued. "For a couple of hours, people consider the theater to escape their own troubles. What an idea! Moving pictures on a screen. And I can't help but think back to the people who built this industry. Ironically, they were also escaping their own troubles."

The star went on to name several Jewish pioneers in the film industry who changed their names to avoid discrimination, including Samuel Goldwyn, Louis B. Mayer and the Warner Brothers.

"They were all fleeing the prejudice they faced in eastern Europe, simply because of their religion. And they were dreamers to like all of us here tonight. And now I dream of a world where such prejudice is a thing of the past," Streisand said.

Kevin Mazur/Getty Images

Streisand went on to discuss a recent experience with a film that not only left her in tears but also showed her "how you can make a profound connection with someone simply by telling the truth."

"It reminded me all over again how much I love film, and why we all strive to make the best movies we can," she continued. "So many people who have done that are sitting right here tonight in this room. So once again, I would like to thank SAG-AFTRA for this fabulous honor, and to say to my fellow actors and directors, I've loved working with you, playing with you and inhabiting that magical world of the movies with you."

"And most of all, I want to thank you for giving me so much joy just watching all of you on the screen," she finished. "Thank you for that."

SAG-AFTRA announced Streisand was the 59th recipient of its Life Achievement Award in December, describing the EGOT honoree as "one of the greatest entertainers of all time.”

“Ever since I was a young girl sitting in the Loew’s Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, I dreamed of being one of those actresses I saw on the screen," Streisand said in a statement at the time. "The movies were a portal to a world I could only imagine. Even though I was an unlikely candidate, somehow my dream came true.”

“This award is especially meaningful to me because it comes from my fellow actors, whom I so admire,” she added.

Fran Drescher , SAG-AFTRA’s president, also released a statement, calling Streisand "an icon and unparalleled talent, a force of nature who has seamlessly woven her brilliance through the fabric of our industry.”

"From her earliest days captivating audiences on Broadway to her unforgettable roles in cinematic classics like Funny Girl , The Way We Were and A Star Is Born , Barbra's ability to inhabit her characters with authenticity is nothing short of extraordinary," said Drescher.

“Her enduring career is a testament to her genuine performances, connecting with audiences on a profound level,” she added. “She is a colossal icon with a relentless work ethic, evolving with each stage of her remarkable journey. We celebrate Barbra Streisand not just for her achievements but for the enduring legacy she has carved.”

The honor, which is voted on by members of SAG-AFTRA's National Honors and Tributes Committee, went to Sally Field and Helen Mirren in 2023 and 2022.

Flowers, cards, notes, and drawings lie next to an oak tree in New York City’s Central Park as a memorial site for Flaco the owl.

Digested week: New Yorkers mourn death of Flaco, America’s first ‘celebrity owl’

Emma Brockes

Reaction to beloved bird’s demise typifies the eccentricity and warmth of the city

The death of Flaco the owl, erstwhile symbol of New York , beloved avian icon, and brief good news item in a sea of grim tidings, continues to reverberate two days after he suffered the most urban of fates and flew into the side of a building on the city’s Upper West Side. He was found late on Friday night, dead on the sidewalk, a few blocks from Central Park.

New York, a sentimental town, has not under-reacted to this event. In the year since escaping from Central Park Zoo after a random act of vandalism breached his cage, Flaco, who was 13, had what seemed to many to be the quintessential New York career, rising from his small-time origins in the zoo enclosure to become America’s first “celebrity owl”. In keeping with every ascent up that particular greasy pole, Flaco’s journey entailed learning to identify and kill rats, charm observers, and outfox those who would put him back in his pen. And like all homegrown celebrities, his death made the front page of the New York Times, whereupon the business of mourning began.

Within hours of Flaco’s death, a large oak in Central Park identified as Flaco’s “favourite tree” had become an unofficial shrine, attracting letters, portraits and tributes to the owl. A petition had been whipped up lobbying for a statue of him in Central Park, which has attracted almost 3,000 signatures.

And legislators in the state senate had suggested renaming an obscure bill known as the Bird Safe Buildings Act, the Flaco Act (Feathered Lives Also Count Act).

This was all lovely and apt. But the detail that did it for me was that of the woman who told reporters over the weekend that, prior to Flaco’s death, she and her friends had thrown an informal barmitzvah for the bird, as is proper for a 13-year-old male, and in a city where, despite soaring costs and corporatisation, New York’s essential eccentricity and warmth somehow always manages to slip the net.

Another finale, this one less moving, in the form of the last episode of True Detective: Night Country. Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the original show, had in the weeks prior to the finale popped up on social media to attack the fourth season as badly written and ill-conceived, an opinion that was, simultaneously, obnoxious, true, and also put Night Country in line with every other season of True Detective, including the ones written by Pizzolatto.

“So: the two women in the house at the end,” says a friend, days after the final episode has gone out.

“Was one of them a ghost?”

“No. At least – hang on. Why would Navarro be a ghost? I don’t think so. ”

“OK. But what about the tunnels?”

“I don’t know about the tunnels.”

“So who killed the clump of men?”

“I thought it was the Indigenous ladies.”

“How was it the ladies? They were busy throwing the orange out of the pit.”

“That was the ghost of the dead child.”

“I thought the ghost of the dead child was the one-eyed polar bear?”

I should point out it had taken us three episodes to recognise Christopher Eccleston, so not all of this confusion was on the writer. Still, lack of concentration aside, the only possible position to take in relation to this season’s True Detective is, “I feel embarrassed for Jodie,” and, “what was Fiona Shaw thinking.” (I think I know what Fiona Shaw was thinking, which was, “a few months filming in Iceland, how nice,” plus, since Jodie Foster had requested her specifically for the role, what was she going to do; say no?)

Joe Biden eats an ice-cream

Every few years a story comes along to remind us that, whatever trouble we get ourselves into in life, there is always someone making weirder mistakes. So it was this week with Christmas Tree Woman, a 36-year-old from Ireland called Kamila Grabska who, after suing her insurance company for a £650,000 payout on the grounds she hadn’t worked for five years after a car crash, was photographed winning a “Christmas tree throwing competition” in Ennis, County Clare.

There’s a lot to unpack here but let’s start with the competition, which took place at a charity fundraiser in 2018, and which Grabska won by chucking a 5ft spruce in the air in what the judge would describe as “a very agile movement”. Grabska’s lawyers argued tossing a tree in the air is not incommensurate with a life of pain, but smiling photos of Grabska that ran in the local newspapers made this line hard to defend.

In what must have been a busy week for the media team at the high court in Limerick, Justice Carmel Stewart threw out the woman’s claim, the photo of the winning tree throw went viral, and future TV writers on network shows based around the exploits of a low-rent private detective hired to sniff out insurance fraud, were gifted a new spin on an old favourite: the removal of a claimant’s neck brace caught on long lens and produced with a flourish in court.

There may be no further value to squeeze out of the Willy Wonka experience, the debacle in Glasgow last weekend that left children “in tears” when their immersive trip to candy land turned into a traipse around some old props in a warehouse. Still, in the interests of economy, let’s try. Even close followers of the story may be unaware that Paul Connell, described by Cosmopolitan as “one of the three actors who took on the iconic role of Willy Wonka” at the event, broke his silence midweek and weighed in on TikTok.

Connell, who was hired by organisers to greet visitors at the entrance to the experience, was given a script that he describes in his post as a “15-page monologue of AI-generated gibberish”, and included the lines, “there is a man who lives here, his name is not known, so we call him the unknown. The unknown is an evil chocolate maker who lives in the walls”. Don’t remember that from the book. In spite of his character’s obscure motivation, a complete lack of direction and a non-sensical script, video footage from the event showed Connell giving it his all, bringing show must go on energy to his performance in an effort to lift the spirits of the disappointed children. I hope he gets a tonne bookings out of it.

For reasons of taste I didn’t want to write about the Princess of Wales, but at the end of this week the discourse around her jumped from the internet into the New York Times, which ran a piece on the “feverish speculation” around Catherine’s whereabouts. This is an old trick of the posh press to get tabloid stories into their pages without seeming too gross, and I will continue the relay race here. “A Spanish journalist named Concha Calleja ,” ran the piece in the Times, “claimed that she spoke with a source within the royal family. The source supposedly told Ms Calleja that Catherine faced serious complications after surgery, requiring “drastic” actions to save her life”. The Buckingham Palace rejected this story as “total nonsense” but, of course, that hasn’t prevented anyone from repeating it.
