I just returned from the most fabulous trip to India with the Travel Divas. From the moment we embarked on this adventure, it was evident that we were in for something extraordinary. The itinerary was a masterpiece, crafted with precision to unveil the very essence of India. Every day was a new chapter, each destination more enchanting than the last. But let's talk about the real stars of the show: the Travel Divas team. They were like magicians, orchestrating our journey with finesse and flair. Their passion for travel was contagious, infusing each moment with joy and excitement. From arranging immersive cultural experiences to ensuring our comfort every step of the way, they truly went above and beyond. And can we take a moment to appreciate the camaraderie among fellow travelers? Traveling with a group of vibrant black women and men added an extra layer of joy and solidarity to the experience. There's something special about exploring the world with like-minded souls who share your zest for adventure. So, if you're yearning for a curated trip that transcends the ordinary, look no further than Travel Divas. They canceled a trip, & refused to refund my money for 45-60 business days. They will not speak with me, return my phone calls nor reply to email. They gave me 1 of 2 choices for a refund: one was to put the money pd towards another trip with them or receive a company check. I foolishly signed it requesting full refund. After speaking with credit card company they were required to refund money within 2 weeks. But I did sign so I'm hoping I actually get refunded.

The Travel Diva Host and Media Crew assign themselves the better accommodations. I just returned from a trip to Turks and Caicos with Travel Divas for my birthday week - Sept 14 -18, 2023. I booked this trip 10 months in advance. The trip was nice for the most part, but I was disappointed that I had to address the issue of accommodations with the 5 star Ritz Carlton and waste 2 days of a 5-day trip negotiating adequate accommodations with the hotel when I paid Travel Divas a premium for a quality travel experience. When you take a trip to a tropical paradise you expect to enjoy views of the garden, city or ocean, ANY one of those would have been GREAT! However, when my roommate (also celebrating her birthday) and I received our room we had a view of a concreate wall. I did not necessarily need an ocean view nor did I ask for one, although it would have been nice. But I did not expect a concreate wall view based on the money we paid to Travel Divas for a 5 star hotel experience. When I asked the front desk about moving rooms, they said the room we received was assigned by Travel Divas hosts and they could not move us without it being an additional cost to us. This room was the only room with this view in the entire hotel, so I started to wonder what room did the hosts and media crew who are being compensated to be on this trip assigned to themselves. In that moment, I had to advocate for myself and negotiate a better room with the hotel in order to salvage this situation. The room we initially received was probably a complimentary room meant for the host or media crew, but my roommate and I were expected to accept this room and be happy while the hosts and media crew enjoyed ocean view rooms. When I shared my experience with host, she initially seemed concerned but later started blame me for negotiating with the hotel to absolve herself of the responsibility of assigning us the 'wall-view' room in the first place. It was classic blame you for your own demise. My questions to the hosts were: 1. Why were we assigned this room? 2. What kind of room do you have? Neither question answered Travel Divas were fully responsible for the accommodations we received because: * Travel Divas collected my money. * Travel Divas received a block of rooms. * Travel Divas assigned those room to paying clients. * Travel Divas promised a quality travel experience. I did not receive a quality experience as far as accommodations went. As fate would have it, we uncovered that there was a constant and steady leak from the ceiling of our room, and the entire closet area was flooded. The hotel had to move us to another room. The room reassignment was through no effort of Travel Divas because had there not been a leak, we would have spent the entire 5 days in the wall-view room. If the hosts were so concerned about the quality of our trip, they would have never assigned us to that room in the first place or would have offered to change rooms when we initially complained about the view. But instead, the host kept saying "my hands are tied, there is nothing I can do". Had they assigned us an adequate room from the start all of this situation would have been avoided. This is not hospitality and not the experience I was expecting. The remainder of the trip was very nice, well organized and fun-filled, but the experience with accommodations was draining and unsettling, it put a stain on the trip overall. I'm booked on another trip with Travel Divas for June 2024. I'm seriously considering cancelling now and cutting my loses. I just can't chance going through this again. I'm sharing my story for those searching for a quality travel experience but mostly because I'm hoping Travel Divas will make positive changes, because I want EVERYONE to win with the best possible travel experience. Good Luck All

I'm glad I read the reviews before booking. The fact that they don't give refunds and your money is not transferable to another trip was a MAJOR RED FLAG. Emergencies are beyond our control, and they take your airline milage. True Divas do not have a backup plan. Losing thousands of dollars is not worth my mental health. This is borderline a scam and comes across very money hungry. They should be called True Eaters.

Travel Divas is the absolute best travel company in the game. Period. Hands down. Not only do they provide FIVE STAR, WHITE GLOVE travel experiences, TD's customer service is UNMATCHED!! They make your travel experience truly seamless. I've been struggling with some personal loss and Travel Divas has been a bright spot during a difficult time. The love and care they show their divas exceeds "just business". They treat their divas like family. Do yourself a favor and become a part of the Travel Divas sisterhood. You won't regret it!

On Black Friday, I booked a new reservation with The Travel Divas. I guess I was so excited about their Black Friday discount that I made an error when finalizing the reservation. Well, that error resulted in a substantial charge to my account. With Christmas only a few weeks away, I was frantic. I contacted the TD (via email) at 5:37PM on SUNDAY. By 6:06 PM, that very night, Markel, the Client Account Director sent me an updated invoice with a refund for the overpayment -A after 6:00 on SUNDAY!! I have traveled with the Divas both domestically and internationally (New Orleans, Jamaica, DR, Dubai and Egypt is booked for March 2019) and one thing has remained constant- their customer service is exceptional and their attention to detail and professionalism is unmatched. They have a customer for life. If you want a first class travel experience and superior customer service, check out The Travel Divas. You will not be disappointed.

I am sharing a recent experience that has me livid. I want to ensure that none of my family, friends, or travel acquaintances get ripped off by The Travel Divas travel group. Be careful when spending your money with a group that is all about sales and marketing more than they are about taking care of customers. What seems to be a very professional and sophisticated travel group has been a complete nightmare to deal with. Travel Divas trips usually start around $5k so they are not cheap but they do a lot of marketing and leverage other women for "promos". They target black professional women who will pay to have a great experience with like-minded "sistas". It is all part of the promotions and marketing I fell to. In 2021 I booked three trips with the group. Dubai (2023) and Egypt and Australia (2024). They make it convenient to book with relatively low deposits and if you book well in advance like me, they offer a monthly payment plan that allow you to pay over time with your final payment being due about three months before the actual travel date. Ok sounds good, right? NO AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! No one can predict what might change in 12 months let alone 16-18 months out. You make monthly payments during that time but regardless of what happens in your life, THEY DO NOT OFFER ANY TRANSFERS TO SOMEONE ELSE, NO NAME CHANGE, NO REFUND, NO MOVING MONIES TO A LATER DATED BOOKING. NOTHING TO TRY AND MAKE THINGS RIGHT. YOUR MONEY IS GONE. Let's say this evening you saw a trip to Greece for 2025 and you pay $2k deposit and book it. Tomorrow you see they have now posted a new trip to Japan and that was really your dream trip and you want to do that one instead, NOPE, SORRY they will keep the $2k you paid already toward Greece, and tell you sorry you have to keep the 2025 Greece trip or cancel and forfeit that money you paid. BUT YOU ARE FREE TO BOOK YOUR DREAM TRIP TO JAPAN, JUST PAY ANOTHER $5k I work in the travel and tourism business. I can travel to these countries for FREE! I was willing to pay for an experience and to go with a group of professional women because of how they market the company. I also know that airlines and hotels allow groups to have the flexibility of changes and even refunds when travel is more than 9 months out. I have a trip with the group scheduled for Egypt in early March 2024 . I inquired with them whether they had considered the US government warning against tourists visiting that region right now. I am concerned about safety. They said the trip is still planned and you can cancel if you desire but you cannot get back the $3,000 that you've paid. I have a medical procedure that I was not planning for that just got scheduled for Mar 2024. I have the Australia trip scheduled for May 2024. My doctor can not clear me to travel in May 2024 until after my procedure and he sees my progress. I explained my situation and asked The Travel Divas if I could move the $6k I have paid already to another trip they have later in the year. I was told NO to that as well. I have to keep the original trip or cancel and forfeit the $6,000. I never asked for a refund on any of these two trips. There is no reason to not allow customers to transfer funds to another booking especially when they book so far in advance. I have lost respect for The Travel Divas® I want to let @Shanterria Earley know that this is not the way to do business. You do not steal from your good paying customers. And you do not want to mess with God's child!

I just came back from a trip with them to Dubai. The LACK OF COMMUNICATION, before and during the trip, AND THE UNPROFESSIONALISM WAS UNBELIEVABLE!!! We arrived at the airport in Dubai and were told to look for the person holding a "TRAVEL DIVAS" sign. We never saw that person and we followed the rest of the group to the airport lobby. The group left the lobby and went to the bus. On the bus, one of the hosts asked "is everyone here?" Of all the people on the bus, she and the other hostess SHOULD HAVE KNOWN the answer to that question. And...NEITHER KNEW! I received a text from a travel diva asking me, "Where is everyone, we are at baggage claim??" I stood up and walked to the front of the bus to Hostess A and let her know that we were missing a person...which actually wound up being 4 people. She looked at me, a person who is NOT EMPLOYED by Travel Divas, and said,"Are you going to get them?" I was shocked and replied, "uhmmmm...sure...?" I got off the bus and went back to the airport to retrieve the 4 divas who were LEFT. As we were walking back to the bus, my roommate, who was on the bus, informed me, "The bus just pulled off...!" When we get there the bus is GONE! They had to pull off and LEAVE because staying would have cost them MORE MONEY... My roommate let me know that there would be another bus coming to get us! We found the bus and we were taken to the hotel. My issues/question/concerns: 1. Why did I have to be the person to go get the left behind divas? There were 2 Hostesses...why didn't one of them say..."No you stay on the bus, one of us will go get them!" 2. Each Hostess had a roster, why was it NOT CHECKED and the missing people identified BEFORE boarding the bus? And DEFINITELY before pulling off? "Is everyone here" is not a responsible way to check attendance! UNPROFESSIONAL! 3. Why were we NEVER GIVEN A PHONE NUMBER TO REACH HOSTESS' A & B? We were told to communicate with them via the Facebook group! The left behind diva did that and no one responded...that's why she sent me a text. UNPROFESSIONAL!! 4. Why did NO ONE...say "Thank You" to me? They apologized to the 4 LEFT BEHIND DIVAS...but NOTHING WAS EVER SAID TO ME! INEXCUSABLE & UNPROFESSIONAL!!! The only person who ever talked to me about what happened was the Tour Operator, and he did so as we were sitting in the hotel at 4am about to board the bus to head back to the USA...While I appreciate his apology...HE WAS NOT THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY and he did not owe me an apology! Travel Divas has an EXCELLENT CONCEPT & if they ever figure out the PROFESSIONAL & COMMUNICATION part of it, they will have and provide an EXCELLENT SERVICE...until then...If you decide to travel with them...GOOD LUCK and I HOPE and PRAY that you don't get LEFT BEHIND or need to reach one of them if you have a problem. I WILL NEVER TRAVEL WITH THEM AGAIN!

I do not trust doing business with Travel Divas. They reneg and lie. I purchased two shirts for a friend in size Large and had them shipped to their home address. Although confirmed and paid for and supposedly shipped out/on the way, one shirt was cancelled but it wasn't until OVER A WEEK after it was ordered. No prior notification of an issue. After promising/confirming a size Large, I'm told that it's back ordered and they only have a size Medium. In contacting the store, the manager ignored my emails and phone calls for days and weeks. When he finally decides to contact me, he talks down to me with an attitude and pretends like he tried calling me when he really didn't. At this point, I contact the owner of Travel Divas, Shanterria, as I'm disgusted by the entire situation. She apologizes and promises to get the shirt sent out in size Large when it comes back in stock in about 6 weeks. She even sent me a gift of apology and tells me to contact her by cell/text as a reminder if I don't hear anything by a certain timeframe. I end up having to contact her when that timeframe passes and receive no response. I contact her over and over via phone call and texts. After the 4th or 5th time, I'm now ticked off because I was lied to and am being purposely ignored. I decide to send a message via messenger after some time and received no response there for some time. Then I proceed to make note of the issue via the facebook group and within 24 hours, I'm deleted from the group. Funny how quickly they can respond to delete me but never responded to messages and voicemails. If they don't keep their word with something small, I wouldn't trust them with anything big like a trip. The friend never received the product (shirt), and I have never received a response months later. Apparently, she doesn't' want negativity (even when truthful) getting out to the public. However, while she can remove me from her group, she won't have control over my public reviews. It's about principle and Shanterria has shown me WHO she is and the type of business that she does. Not the type of company I do business with, black-owned or not.

This is my first experience with this group and each time I call the office the customer experience is amazing. They return your call, answer all of your questions and some. My sister and I are preparing for Africa in December and she is already planning for Bali 6 months after we return. I am so excited, I can't wait to take off. By the way we have ordered t-shirts:)

I think 10 years ago they were better than they are now. Behind the scenes is messy. Lack of communication is the main problem and not keeping people fully informed. Last minute changes and most times you have to contact them vs them providing the info and breakdown. Back of house not organized and all over the place. For the price you pay I expected better service. Also, when they mess up, change things or cancel something, most times you don't get your money refunded. Keep in mind that if you book with them where your flight is included, make sure you get the flyer miles if your a member of that airline by contacting them and giving them the info, otherwise travel divas gets credit for those flyer miles They have all these trips but not enough people to handle the load and stuff falls through the cracks a lot. After this next trip I won't be booking through them. Too messy and I think it's all about the $$$ and the service suffers.

Buses and minibuses in a parking lot. The sky is dark blue, and a few stars are visible.

Aurora Tourism in Iceland: You Can Seek, but You May Not Find

The country markets itself as a destination to see the northern lights — especially this year, which is a peak time for solar activity. But they can be elusive, as one writer recently found.

In Reykjavík, Iceland, aurora borealis tourism is a booming business. Hopeful tourists board buses to head out into the night in search of the northern lights. Credit... Sigga Ella for The New York Times

Amelia Nierenberg spent four nights searching for the northern lights in Iceland.

  • March 25, 2024

From the outside, it may seem like the northern lights dance across Iceland’s skies each night. On Icelandair ads, planes fly across shimmering curtains in the sky. On social media, travelers gaze at the green bands above them . The lights are even on some recycling bins in Reykjavík, the capital: “Keep Iceland Clean.”

In the past decade or so, an aurora borealis industrial complex has boomed in Iceland. Many rent a car and go out on their own, but there are northern lights big bus tours and northern lights minibus tours and northern lights Super Jeep tours . There are private guides and boat cruises . There’s an observatory base camp . There’s even a museum .

Tourists line up outside a red minibus in the twilight. Behind them, there is a light green statue that is illuminated.

But the lights can be elusive.

“Tourists sometimes expect, like, ‘At what time do you turn them on?’” said Björn Saevar Einarsson, a forecaster at Iceland’s meteorological office , chuckling. “Like we have a switch in the back room.”

This year, the letdowns are especially intense.

The northern lights, which are also called the aurora borealis, are most visible when there are solar flares, which are big eruptions on the sun that send charged particles toward Earth. This year, the sun is approaching the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity , which some assume means that the displays could peak, too.

But the enhanced solar activity doesn’t necessarily mean the northern lights will be brighter or more frequent, scientists wearily explain. Instead, they mostly mean that the lights can be seen farther south than usual: In recent months, they have been visible in Arizona , Missouri and southern England .

That doesn’t mean much for Iceland.

In fact, Icelanders and scientists said, this winter is nothing special. Sometimes, the lights are there. Sometimes, they aren’t. Just like always.

Hunting the lights

But nothing special, with the northern lights, is still very special. And so tourists keep coming .

Last month, I joined the fray. For four nights, I looked for telltale sky shimmers in and around Reykjavík.

I booked my tickets riding high — this was the best year yet, right? But as I learned more, and as my flight neared, my hopes ebbed. Scientists and tour leaders gently told me that the skies were cloudy and the solar activity seemed quiet.

“Just to let you know the forecast doesn’t look too good” Inga Dís Richter, the chief commercial officer at Icelandia , a tourism agency, wrote in an email two days before I planned to take a minibus trip with Reykjavik Excursions , one of its tour operators.

“But,” she added, “this can change.”

To find the lights, guides and travelers often rely on aurora forecasts, which overlay cloud cover and solar activity. They check them constantly, like a bride with an outdoor wedding in mid-April.

Some of the forecasts are free, like the aurora forecast run by Iceland’s meteorological office or Iceland at Night , which includes space weather. (Some are not — Aurora Forecast , which costs $12.99 a year, sends alerts.) Many people also turn to Facebook pages , where enthusiasts hungrily swap sightings.

Luck, though, is everything.

“There’s only one thing less predictable with the northern lights, and that’s the Arctic weather,” said John Mason, a global expert on the northern lights. “An aurora forecast is barely worth the paper that it’s written on.”

The guides work hard to explain the science, and set expectations. Most companies offer a free rebooking option if the lights do not show.

On my first night of aurora stalking, despite Ms. Richter’s warnings, I joined an expectant group on the Reykjavík Excursions minibus. For $88, I got a seat on the 19-person bus, which left the city’s central bus station at 9:30 p.m.

Over the next three to four hours, we would drive through the Icelandic night together. I’d either see something astonishing with these strangers — the sky, banded with light — or shiver with them shoulder-to-shoulder, awkward in the cold.

As we pulled onto the road, Gudjon Gunnarsson, the guide, set the mood early. “We are going hunting for the lights,” he said, emphasizing the word “hunting,” “similar to going out fishing in a lake.”

He drove for about 45 minutes, letting Reykjavík’s glow fade behind us. The city has about 140,000 people, and no real skyscrapers, so there’s limited light pollution. Although the northern lights can appear over the city, it’s best to see them in total darkness.

Then he paused and consulted with another guide.

“It is too cloudy here,” he told his flock. “So we will keep driving.”

But as we kept driving, clouds turned to a dense fog, so thick that the moon all but disappeared.

Mr. Gunnarsson turned off the main highway about an hour after we left Reykjavík. He parked in a parking lot. Or maybe it was a side street? The darkness was so deep that I could only make out the moonlight on the ocean, and only then after my eyes adjusted.

We disembarked and stood dutifully beside him, staring up at the sky. Then, one woman pointed toward Reykjavík. Were those the lights? (No. That was light pollution.)

Christof Reinhard, 65, who owns a medical laser company and was visiting with his family from Paris, mused that our search was a little bit like a safari. Sure, the desert is amazing, but it’s much better with lions. Or, maybe, was this more like a whale watch?

“Instead of a boat,” he said, “you have a bus.”

Mr. Gunnarsson watched the group stomp their feet and bend into the wind. Fifteen minutes. Then, half an hour. The clouds hung thick above. “There’s nothing happening here, as you can see,” he finally said to relieved chuckles. “It’s one of those nights where you just have to give up.”

Tourists can get mad, Mr. Gunnarsson and other guides said. It’s rare, but it does happen.

“It’s the trip that has our worst reviews,” said Eric Larimer, the digital marketing manager for Gray Line Iceland , a day tour and airport transport company.

A wake-up call for the aurora

For some, the joy is in the search, even if there is no find. A few focus on astronomy, often opting to stay at Hotel Rangá , which is just off the main ring road (Route 1) near Iceland’s south coast.

The hotel looks unassuming — low-slung and wooden — but it’s one of the most famous in Iceland. (The Kardashians stayed there . So did the Real Housewives of Orange County .) A standard room costs more than $300, depending on the season.

But Rangá doesn’t just cater to celebrities. It also draws astronomy buffs, enticed by its “aurora wake-up call” service and its observatory, which has state-of-the-art telescopes.

“One thing is to sell them,” said Fridrik Pálsson, the hotel’s owner, speaking of the northern lights. “Another thing is to deliver them.”

About 20 years ago, before the northern lights industry took off, he delegated the night security guard to monitor the sky. The guard pokes his head out every few minutes to look for the telltale flicker. If he sees the lights, he alerts the guests.

The service aims to address one of the main issues with hunting for the northern lights: They are usually only visible on winter nights, when it is very cold, very windy and very late.

“To be a good northern lights observer, you need the constitution of an insomniac polar bear,” Dr. Mason said.

My room phone, alas, stayed silent. But I did dream about the lights — great Wonka colors swirling, strangely, behind the Chrysler Building.

Mr. Pálsson built the observatory, too. Even if the lights didn’t show up, he figured, the stars are still magnificent — and, for city dwellers, also rare. The hotel contracts astronomers to work the telescopes and explain the stars to guests. On my second night in Iceland, as twilight slipped below happy-hour skies, I crunched across the snow to the observatory with Saevar Helgi Bragason, an Icelandic science communicator who leads the astronomy program.

He bent into a toddler-size telescope, focusing it on the moon’s craters. They looked clearer than the hotel, just a short walk away. It was too early for the lights, he said. And that evening seemed too cloudy (on Earth) and too quiet (on the sun).

Mr. Bragason joked that the lights can get in his way — they create a mist over the stars he really wants to see. But tourists often come specifically to see them. And sometimes, he said, as they wait impatiently, they can miss the real wonder.

“You’re left with these beautiful skies above you,” he said. “Basically, literally, another universe opens up.”

Creating a lights season

Hotel Rangá was a pioneer in Iceland’s northern lights tourism industry: About two decades ago, people came to Iceland for the long summer days, and left as daylight slipped farther south.

“I found it rather stupid in the beginning,” admitted Mr. Pálsson, the owner of Rangá, speaking of northern lights tourism.

But spreading tourism throughout the year made sense. Partly, that was an environmental concern. The tourists would crowd the country’s extraordinary natural sites over just a few months. It was also economic. When the visitors left Iceland, tourism jobs would ebb with the sunlight.

So the northern lights, which are reliably visible from September to March, became the backbone of the country’s winter branding, said Sveinn Birkir Björnsson, the marketing and communications director at Business Iceland , which promotes the country.

“To be able to sell this product of cold and darkness, you have to have something to offer,” he said.

Now, even though June, July and August are the busiest months, tourism has evened out over the seasons. In 2023, there were about 1.1 million international visitors to Iceland during the aurora months, based on departures from Keflavík Airport, according to data from Iceland’s tourist board . From April to August, there were about 1.1 million, too.

About a decade earlier , when tourism overall to Iceland was lower, there were about 336,000 departures from the main airport in colder months, and about 446,000 in the spring and summer.

The winter travelers are drawn by the lights — and the hot springs, glaciers and icy waterfalls. It’s also cheaper than the summer season.

Some try to visit volcanoes , but the country recently warned tourists to avoid the lava flows — Iceland is living in an unusually active period of seismic activity . In January, lava flowed into a small town and last week a volcano erupted with just 40 minutes’ notice near the Blue Lagoon thermal springs, one of the country’s biggest attractions.

The final attempts

Near midnight on my last night, a Sunday, I drove to the Grótta Lighthouse , a popular spot on the outskirts of Reykjavík.

A few die-hard experts had warned me off — many tourists go there because it’s darker than most of Reykjavík, but then don’t think to turn off their headlights. It was also raining, greatly diminishing my chances of seeing the lights.

But I only had three hours before I had to leave to make my predawn flight. I felt a little desperate, a little dazed. I parked, and approached two people who were sitting in the rain on a wet wall, looking at the water in the darkness. I climbed over seaweed, and introduced myself. What would it mean to them, I asked, if the lights suddenly appeared?

“It’d be a little bit like the cherry on top,” said Catherine Norburn, 29, who was visiting from England.

She and her husband were set to fly out the next morning. They had not yet seen the lights.

“We don’t have high hopes,” said her husband, Reece Norburn, 29, “but it’s now or never.”

We didn’t see the lights. And I didn’t see them later, even after pulling off the highway halfway between Reykjavík and the airport at 3:30 a.m., half convinced by a shimmery cloud.

But I did spend more time looking up at the sky. And it’s a marvel.

In New York City, where I live, the night sky blooms orange-mauve. In Iceland, the nighttime darkness is just that — darkness. Clouds roll, breaking the deep blue. Stars actually shine. Northern lights or no northern lights, it was still cosmically beautiful.

7 Free Travel Planning AI and ChatGPT Apps to Get an Instant Itinerary

These free travel planning apps use AI and machine learning to prepare a holiday itinerary for you in seconds.

Quick Links

  • PLAN by ixigo
  • Trip Planner AI
  • Vacay Chatbot

Key Takeaways

  • Layla, Wonderplan, and PLAN by ixigo are AI travel planning apps with customizable itineraries.
  • iplan.ai offers detailed itineraries for popular tourist cities based on interests and budget.
  • Curiosio plans road trips on all continents, while Trip Planner AI helps with activity selection and cost estimation.

You can tell a travel agent your preferred dates, the place you want to visit, and your budget, and expect a full itinerary of what to do there based on your preferences. But can AI do the same job?

These free travel planning apps use AI and machine-learning tools like ChatGPT to prepare an itinerary for you in a few seconds, and we took them for a spin.

Layla describes itself as an AI trip planner, meaning you can use it to decide your vacation destination, create itineraries, and find suitable hotels and flights.

If you are uncertain about your destination or would like suggestions, you can ask Layla for advice regarding your trip. Otherwise, enter your destination and ask Layla to create your itinerary. Within a few seconds, you'll get a detailed plan for your trip.

As Layla is a chatbot, you can enter a prompt to ask it to change your itinerary. For instance, ask it to focus more on outdoor activities or include local restaurants. If you're unsatisfied with the activities planned on any particular day, you can give instructions and ask Layla to regenerate that part only.

Once you've perfected your itinerary, you can share it with your friends via a URL or add it to your bucket list.

2. Wonderplan

Wonderplan is a wonderful AI tool for planning your trip. To create your itinerary, Wonderplan first asks you to enter your destination country and city, your budget, the number of days you'll be staying, and your interests.

It then creates a travel plan within a few minutes, displaying various places to visit, their descriptions, and the time usually spent at each location. Although Wonderplan doesn't show the trip map, it does provide a link to Google Maps for each place.

It also displays different types of accommodation available (like Airbnb, hotel, or hostel) and their respective costs. Similarly, there are details about transportation, food, and activities. This way, you can estimate the potential cost of your trip.

In addition to your itinerary, Wonderplan also shows essential information about the country you're visiting. These include the currency conversion rate, electricity plug type, languages spoken, weather, and popular conveyances.

3. PLAN by ixigo

PLAN by ixigo starts by asking you about your dream destination. Then, it provides an option to describe the type of experience you want to have. This is just like a ChatGPT prompt, so you can enter anything you wish.

For example, you can specify the duration of your stay, your interests, the kinds of activities you're looking for, whether you have a family with you, and so on.

But if you can't think of any prompts, PLAN by ixigo provides a few trip ideas, so you can always select those. PLAN by ixigo then shows a day-wise plan, showing what you can do in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

However, if the suggested itinerary doesn't sound appealing, you can again enter a prompt to edit it.

4. iplan.ai

While iplan.ai doesn't mention which AI or machine-learning algorithm it uses, the results are fantastic enough to gloss over that. The app works beautifully on phones to give you a full itinerary for any one city at a time, depending on how many days you have there.

The app first asks you to name the destination city. As far as we checked, iplan.ai works best for popular tourist cities, not offbeat or obscure travel. Next, note how many days you will be there, and then choose your free time each day—a cool step to ensure a better itinerary if you already have some plans, but not a whole days worth.

Tell iplan.ai if you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or with friends, and then choose your interest among topics like history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxing, etc. Finally, choose between an economy, normal, or luxury budget.

After a few minutes, iplan.ai gives you a day-wise itinerary for your trip. It's plotted on a map so you can see all the locations, and each point of interest has a brief description along with estimated travel time.

The app has both free and paid plans. With a paid account, you can share the trip plan with your friends and access it offline. Another limitation of iplan.ai is that you can't get an itinerary for a multi-city trip. For now, you'll need to make a plan for each city you're visiting, one at a time.

5. Curiosio

The easiest last-minute travel plan is to get into a car and drive. Curiosio specializes in helping you plan an itinerary for a road trip to several major countries on all continents. It doesn't cover every single place, but the existing collection is impressive enough.

Curiosio uses its own AI engine, Ingeenee, which is trained on several crowdsourced travel-based resources, such as Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Freebase, DBpedia, GeoNames, OSMNames, and OpenStreetMap. Through this dataset, it can chart an itinerary that meets your requirements across various parameters.

You can set options for a round trip or a one-way trip with starting and finishing points. If there are any places you want to visit on the way, add them in. Then set the number of travelers, dates of the journey, what vehicle you're using, total budget, and whether you want to visit places that spark curiosity or are obscure. The AI will usually give you multiple plans and routes for these options.

The itinerary includes a map of your route and a day-wise breakdown of where you'll be going and what you'll be seeing. Each point of interest is clickable to find more information about it. There are easy ways to share your itinerary with co-travelers, print it out, or even export it to Google Maps. Curiosio is one of the best road trip planners for your next adventure .

6. Trip Planner AI

Trip Planner AI plans a perfect trip to your dream destination. Begin creating your itinerary by entering the city you wish to visit and traveling dates. You can add multiple destinations here.

Then, select the kinds of activities you prefer, the number of people, and whether you're traveling with friends or family. Trip Planner AI asks you about your dietary preferences and budget.

As an optional step, you can specify the place where you'll be staying so that it creates an itinerary accordingly. If you haven't decided on your lodging yet, you can explore hotels suggested by Trip Planner AI.

Finally, Trip Planner AI generates a detailed itinerary, a map, and basic information about the city you're visiting. For each destination, it provides the details of the place, expected traveling time, and cost. Though it provides a complete plan for your trip, you can manually add or remove activities from your itinerary. You can also invite your friends to edit the itinerary and download it as a PDF.

7. Vacay Chatbot

Vacay Chatbot is not a dedicated itinerary maker but an AI chatbot that acts like your travel advisor. So, you can ask it to give travel recommendations, compare different destinations, and, of course, create an itinerary. If you've previously used AI chatbots like ChatGPT, you'll find this trip planner easy to use.

Just enter a prompt specifying your destination and trip details and ask Vacay Chatbot to create an itinerary. You can include details like your trip duration, budget, preferences, number of travelers, etc. The more details you provide, the better your itinerary will be.

One of the downsides of using Vacay Chatbot is that it doesn't provide a map for your trip. However, you can use these apps to plot your itinerary on a map .

All these travel planning AI apps urge you not to use the itinerary as-is and only treat it as a template or guide to begin planning your trip. This is because they currently have several limitations, like databases that aren't recently updated or require specific prompts from the user.

A real human travel agent will still give you a more customized itinerary, but it will cost you a few bucks. If you want a free base guide, more basic travel planning apps are a good starting point.

Forget rest stops. Plan your road trip around playgrounds.

When toddler meltdowns strike, google maps is your friend.

Welcome to The Upgrade, By The Way’s series on travel hacks and hot takes. See how to submit here.

I don’t know where my 3-year-old picked up the phrase. Maybe it’s innate to all kids who’ve been stuck in the car for more than 10 minutes: “Are we there yet?”

Unfortunately for all of us, the answer is almost always “No.” We won’t be there for many, many hours. That’s when a playground pit stop can save the day.

Over the past few years, my husband and I have driven round-trip between Washington, D.C., and Florida nine times to visit family, see friends, take vacation, work remotely and thaw out in the winter. Since we break the trips into manageable chunks for young kids and elderly dogs, that equals more than a month on the road.

We started building playground stops into the schedule once our daughter was almost a year and a half old and needed more mental and physical stimulation than exploring the front seat during rest stops. It’s become an essential part of long drives now, giving us — and most importantly, our energetic passenger — a light in the middle of the road trip tunnel. We can answer her “Are we there yet?” question by saying we’re 30 minutes from a playground, even if the final stop is a day and a half away.

In the early days, we just wanted convenient spots for diaper changes and toddling around, with maybe a baby swing as a bonus. Now that we have a new baby and a preschooler, we’re thrilled to find tall slides, big-kid swings, bridges and bathrooms — or at least space to set up a tiny portable toilet.

There have been deserted, tucked-away neighborhood parks where we ran into fellow travelers. And some have been bustling with locals, giving us a unique view into a city’s culture. The unicorn of stops would be near the highway with good takeout food nearby, a playground, a restroom and a dog park.

We’ve come to appreciate the train-themed Jefferson Park , perched on a hill in Richmond with a majestic view of the city and proximity to a great local coffee shop . James F. Holland Memorial Park in Palm Coast, Fla., clicked every box we had and then some. Our daughter’s playground adventures have included testing the little-kid swings in Savannah’s Forsyth Park, playing an oversized xylophone in Palm Coast, braving a mini rock-climbing wall in Richmond, rocking in a giant ladybug near Brunswick, Ga., and taking her scooter for a spin in Port St. John, Fla.

On a shorter trip — or in a playground-less wasteland — we’ve found that a rest stop lawn might substitute. If there are dandelions to be picked and scattered, it might even be preferred. On a recent gas-food-bathroom break between New York City and D.C., an empty Starbucks patio served a greater purpose. My husband and 3-year-old used it as an obstacle course so she could run around while I fed the baby in the car.

There are plenty of resources to help pick a playground: Tripadvisor recommendations , Reddit threads , parenting blogs and an app called Playground Buddy . When we set off in the mornings, I try to figure out how far we’ll get in three hours and scout a good spot there. But because children require more of a go-with-the-flow approach, I mostly operate in the moment.

So I fumble around Google Maps to find the nearest playground as the baby wakes up from a nap crying, and then the 3-year-old needs a bathroom break pronto. If I have time, I check reviews for reports of broken swings or dirty restrooms. Sometimes I manage to search for a Starbucks and gas station nearby so we can maximize the stop.

I’m sure there will be a day when we can power through the long drive as models of efficiency, stopping only for fuel and relief. But I’ll miss the playground detours and those little snapshots of my kids’ joy. We may not be “there” yet, but at least it’s somewhere fun.
