Find out what The Chuckle Brothers are up to now...

Chuckle Brothers getting a brand new TV show! 'Too me...'

Age-gap romances, party pensioners and charity singles... here's what REALLY happened to The Chuckle Brothers

They captivated our childhoods with their amusing on screen antics, but what ever happened to The Chuckle Brothers?

Are they still Chuckling?

The quick answer to that is no. Chuckle Brothers Barry, 73, and Paul, 70, made 292 episodes of their BBC series ChuckleVision between 1987 and 2009, but sadly it then came to an end. When asked if the show might return by one of the 200,000 strong fans who ‘liked’ a Facebook petition to bring it back, Barry said: "I doubt it’ll happen – the BBC aren’t interested."

So how did they start out, then?

It was actually Barry and Paul’s older siblings Jimmy and Brian who began performing as a comedy duo, The Patton Brothers, way back in 1954! The four brothers then appeared together as the Chuckle Brothers in the 80s, before Paul and Barry found kids’ TV fame as a duo with The Chucklehounds in 1985 and then ChuckleVision.

What do they do now?

They may be drawing their pensions now, but Barry and Paul rarely seem to put their feet up – they often do nightclub personal appearances or get paid for promotional events. And in 2014, in quite possibly the most comedic collaboration of all time, the pair teamed up with rapper Tinchy Stryder on the song To Me, To You (Bruv), which was recorded to raise money for the African-Caribbean Leukaemia Trust. After the official video for the track racked up millions of views within the rap community, the Chuckle Brothers’ manager Phil Dale said: "With all sincerity, the track wasn’t done to gain the Brothers street credibility."

In September 2015, the Brothers performed for twenty minutes at the music festival Bestival, citing it as the biggest crowd they had ever performed in front of.

What about their personal lives?

Both brothers are married – Barry’s wife is called Ann and Paul’s married to Sue.

Famous Friends?

In last year’s book Fifty Years Of To Me… To You, Paul revealed: ‘"In the summer of 1980 we used to go clubbing with a music promoter who I think was Simon Cowell." Blimey!

"Ch-ch-chucklevision, Ch-ch-chucklevision, Ch-ch-chucklevision…" is a theme tune embedded in the consciousness, for better or for worse, of generations of children. And there can have been few more incongruous sights recently than that of "Chuckle Brothers" Barry and Paul Elliott grinning toothily for the cameras outside Southwark Crown Court. But fear not – no cherished memories of innocent childish enjoyment were about to be trashed by unseemly allegations. The Elliotts have been accused of absolutely nothing; they were at Southwark to give evidence in favour of Dave Lee Travis in the bearded DJ's trial for alleged indecent assault.

Paul, aged 66, and Barry, 69, worked with Travis in pantomime in Crawley in the early 1990s and, giving evidence separately, Paul was interrupted by the judge when he referred to himself as "we". The collective pronoun is understandable. The brothers have been performing together since long before winning the ITV talent show Opportunity Knocks in 1967 and New Faces in 1974 – a unique double in what were The X Factor/Britain's Got Talent of their day.

Born into a showbiz family from Rotherham, their father, Jimmy Elliott (aka "Gene Patton"), was a well-known Gang Show performer who once appeared alongside an 18-year-old Peter Sellers. Paul and Barry's two older brothers, Jimmy and Brian, also formed a double-act, the Patton Brothers. And while another sibling, Colin, eschewed the family trade, their late sister, Sheila, married an actor – Coronation Street star Bill Waddington, no less, of sainted Percy Sugden memory.

Chuckle Brothers: From then to now

It was children's television that finally made Paul (he's the tall one) and Barry (he's the short one) – playing the accident-prone protagonists in BBC1's ChuckleVision. For 10 years following their New Faces victory, the brothers had trodden the variety-show circuit – even joining the circus for a while – before being spotted by BBC producers in 1984 and offered seven weeks' work in a new childrens' TV series called Roger the Dog. "It was like Laurel and Hardy", recalled Barry in 2010. "But we were dressed as dogs". It gives a whole new meaning to Ollie's "Here's another nice mess you've gotten me into".

Roger the Dog begat The Chucklehounds which, in 1987, begat ChuckleVision, with Paul and Barry finally allowed to reveal themselves as Laurel and Hardy in shell suits instead of dog-suits. They were physically mismatched slapstick clowns known for their catchphrase, "To me, to you"– which was, says Barry, "a family thing... we used to say it at home, when we were moving furniture for example."

It was a simple formula, with surprising longevity, ChuckleVision running for 292 episodes between 1987 and 2009, a fair number of the shows also featuring Paul and Barry's older brothers, Jimmy and Brian, who would take it in turns to play a character named after the catchphrase "No Slacking". And when the Chuckle Brothers won a Special Children's Bafta in 2008, it was presented by Queer as Folk/Doctor Who re-boot creator Russell T Davies, who had written for ChuckleVision in the early Nineties. There's a lesson for any aspiring television gods.

Outside TV, Barry and Paul have starred in at least 40 consecutive years of panto, as well as being prolific creators of such stage shows as Indiana Chuckles and the Kingdom of the Mythical Pout and Chuckle Trek – The Lost Generation. Their latest production, The Chuckle Brothers in a 2014 Space Oddity, continues its tour of major regional theatres later this month. "It's a friendly sort of humour," says Barry, so don't expect a satire of their latest outing; there will be no Barry Potter and the Legend of the Hairy Monster. "Oh dear, oh dear", as another of their catchphrases has it.

The Chuckle Brothers

chuckle brothers tour

Barry and Paul- 'The Chuckle Brothers ' combined successful careers in variety, pantomime and television to become the top 'double Act' to appear each year in pantoland.

They come from a 'Showbiz Dynasty'- their Brothers, the ' Patton Brothers ' and their Father, Gene Patton was a popular variety star. See also our Patton Brothers article.

Gene Patton began as James Patton Elliott- Jimmy Elliott, a whistling comedian and dancer. His wife Amy was a dancer with the Rodney Hudson Troupe. Their family consisted of Jimmy and Brian, Sheila, and Paul and Barry, The family lived in Rotherham, and were constantly on tour.

Whilst principal comic in the Number 10 RAF Gang Show in 1943, Jimmy (Gene Patton) discovered the 19 year old Peter Sellers was in his company- with a great desire to be a drummer in the five piece band. The Gang Show toured India and Burma, covering over 30,000 miles, and during this time Jimmy encouraged the young Sellers to take part in sketches and routines. By the end of the tour Peter Sellers was Gene Patton's feed, as well as performing his own solo impersonation spot!

The eldest brothers formed the 'Patton Brothers' while Paul and Barry later adopted the working names of ' Harman & Elliott ' before becoming ' The Harman Brothers ' and appearing in Summer Season, Circus and in Pantomime

Barry (24 th December 1944 - 5th August 2018) and Paul (born 18 th October 1947) began entertaining from a very early age. In the 1980's they underwent another name change, and became ' The Chuckle Brothers ' they had already appeared in over a decade of pantomimes as the 'Harmans' before they appeared on bills with their new name.

In 1967 they won 'Opportunity Knocks' on television, and later went on to become 'New Faces' winners in 1974.

In 1983 they appeared on television screens with a canine companion- not the Chucklehounds- that was to come a couple of years later- but with Roger The Dog and Ward Allan, in Ward's BBC 1 series ' The Roger The Dog Show '. Paul & Barry had previously been the 'warm Up' act to Ward Allan's ventriloquism in his stage tour. It was during this tour that a management saw them perform, and the road to 'Chucklevision' via the 'Chucklehounds' began.

In 1985, after appearing at Cardiff in pantomime, they got their break into the world of television appearing as ' The Chucklehounds ' on children's TV, and released from the confines of the lovable dog costumes, they followed in their success in 1987 with ' Chucklevision ', as popular now as ever with children and- it has to be admitted- adults throughout the country! They have a large student following for their TV and stage tours in the UK. The series is shown throughout the world- The Chuckles brought the skills and routines of pantomime into the living rooms, attracting new audiences with every series.

Following Barry's sad death in 2018, Paul continues to appear in Pantomime. Cinderella (Woking) 2018/19, Snow White (Bradford) 2019/20, Aladdin (Cardiff) 2021/22, Snow White (Milton Keynes) 2022/23 and Peter Pan (Woking) 2023/24.

Chuckle Brothers facts for kids

The Chuckle Brothers were an English comedy double act comprising real-life brothers Barry David Elliott (24 December 1944 – 5 August 2018) and Paul Harman Elliott (born 18 October 1947). They were known for their BBC children's programme ChuckleVision , which aired from 1987 to 2009 and celebrated its twenty-first series with a 2010 stage tour titled An Audience with the Chuckle Brothers . The comedy of the Chuckle Brothers usually derived from slapstick , other visual gags, and wordplay, and their catchphrases included "To me, to you!" and "Oh dear, oh dear!"

The brothers were born in Rotherham to Amy and James Patton Elliott, in 1944 and 1947. Their father was a Gang Show performer whose stage name was Gene Patton; he worked with the 18-year-old Peter Sellers in 1943 in The No. 10 Gang and gave performances in London , Orkney and the Hebrides , Iceland , the Far East, India, and Burma . Their two older brothers, Jimmy and Brian, were known professionally as the Patton Brothers until Jimmy's death in 2019. The Patton Brothers appeared in ChuckleVision , Jimmy as the nameless character known colloquially as "No Slacking", and Brian as another unnamed character known as "Getoutofit".

The Chuckle Brothers gained wider attention as a support act for singer Dorothy Squires.

The Chuckle Brothers, performing as The Harman Brothers, won the television talent show Opportunity Knocks in 1967, followed by success on New Faces in 1974. The brothers began their television careers as a double act, making their debut in April 1979 on the BBC comedy series Lennie and Jerry , hosted by Lennie Bennett and Jerry Stevens. They made two appearances on the game show 3-2-1 , hosted by Ted Rogers, in January 1980 and April 1982, and appeared on the long-running BBC programme, The Good Old Days , in June 1980. In August 1983, the Brothers appeared on The Freddie Starr Showcase alongside the comedian Freddie Starr .

Their primary work was mainly focused on children's television, beginning initially on Christmas Day in 1980 with their taking part in a televised children's show, A Merry Morning , in which the brothers entertained around 250 children from the Leeds area in Yeadon Town Hall.

In 1985, the brothers launched a pre-school programme on the BBC entitled Chuckle Hounds , in which they performed routines with no dialogue , while dressed up in giant dog costumes. Their success in children's television came in 1987, with the launch of their iconic children's show, ChuckleVision , in which their real-life siblings Jimmy and Brian Patton made occasional appearances. The show proved a ratings hit with children, running for twenty-one series over a period of twenty-two years, and giving them a Special Award for Lifetime Achievement at the British Academy Children's Awards in 2008. The final series of the programme was aired in December 2009.

The two contributed further to children's entertainment, performing at the Children's Royal Variety Performance in May 1992, and launching a children's game show titled To Me, To You! , which ran between 1996 and 1998 and which took its name from their signature catchphrase.

Outside of children's entertainment, the brothers have made appearances in many other television series, both together and separately. In May 2008, they appeared in the BBC documentary series Comedy Map of Britain , and won the 2010 series of Celebrity Coach Trip . In November 2011, the brothers starred in a series of TV advertisements for the UK-based van insurance comparison website Van Compare.com In October 2012, they appeared on Comedy World Cup on Channel 4 , while on 15 March 2013, they were featured in David Walliams ' sketch for Comic Relief. From 2013 to 2014, Barry made a number of appearances in the BBC comedy series Still Open All Hours as dog owner Mr Marshall, first appearing in the role for the 2013 Christmas special. On 13 March 2015, they appeared again on Comic Relief, this time in a sketch based around National Treasures . The duo appeared at the 2016 Royal Variety Performance , performing sketches with host David Walliams . In April 2018, it was announced the brothers were in the process of recording a new clip show for Channel 5, entitled Chuckle Time ; It ran for one series during the summer of that year, although it was cut short following the death of Barry Elliot in August 2018.

A box set of the two was also made available. A dress rehearsal of the duo's 1996 tour The Chuckle Brothers in Trouble was released on DVD in 2008. In addition, the brothers' 2008 tour, Indiana Chuckles and The Kingdom of the Mythical Sulk , set in Ancient Egypt , was released on DVD later that year.

The brothers toured theatres annually with their shows until 2015. Although, they performed regularly in pantomimes, festivals, events and holiday parks until Barry's death in 2018.

During their career, Paul and Barry performed in fifty one pantomimes together. Their first was Babes in the Wood , which they performed as The Harman Brothers in Malvern from 1967 until 1968 with Sandy Powell. Their final pantomime became Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton, which they appeared in from 2017 until 2018 with Craig Revel Horwood . They were awarded a Great British Pantomime Award for Best Double Act for this production. Since Barry's death, Paul has stated his intention to continue to appear in pantomime productions.

In 2010 the Chuckle Brothers won the first Celebrity Coach Trip .

From 2014 until 2018, the brothers made appearances at various nightclubs and student events, performing sets and posing for photographs. After Barry's death, Paul stated that he would continue with these appearances.

In March 2016, the brothers appeared in a promotional video for the computer game Hitman .

In 2017 both brothers appeared in The Funniest Man in the World , a short film directed by Jon Conway about Joseph Grimaldi , played by Barry.

Following Barry's death, Paul has appeared in a number of quiz shows for charity, including Pointless Celebrities , Tenable All Stars and Celebrity Mastermind .

In October 1995, the Chuckle Brothers released an album entitled To You to Me featuring eleven tracks. Many of the tracks were based on their catchphrases, such as "To me, to you" and "Silly You, Silly Me".

In October 2014, the Chuckle Brothers collaborated with Tinchy Stryder to release a charity single "To Me, To You (Bruv)" to raise funds for the African-Caribbean Leukaemia Trust.

In September 2015, the Brothers performed for twenty minutes at the music festival Bestival, citing it as the biggest crowd they had ever performed in front of.

In July 2016 the Chuckle Brothers released their first mobile app for Android and iOS titled "Chuckle World". It is a quiz game with Tinder style sliding mechanics and endless style mobile gameplay.

Personal life

The brothers regularly appeared at events and openings, an example being the unveiling of the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre in North Anston in South Yorkshire in July 2013, which Barry attended. Supporters of Rotherham United Football Club , they were made Honorary Life Presidents of the club in 2007.

Both brothers have been married: Barry was married to Ann from 1973 until his death and Paul has been married to Sue since 1988. Both brothers were smokers , although Paul had apparently quit by 2000. Paul lives in Serlby, Doncaster , whilst Barry lived in Ravenfield, Rotherham , until his death.

In April 2007, whilst on holiday on the Greek island of Cephalonia , Paul broke his nose and suffered cuts and bruises when he lost control of his motorcycle after suddenly braking to avoid a goatherd and herd. It was reported at the time that, instead of helping him, tourists who stopped at the accident shouted the Chuckle Brothers' catchphrase, "To me, to you." However, Paul later revealed on Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast that the story of tourists shouting out catchphrases was an invention in order to get the story in the newspapers.

An urban legend surrounding Barry Chuckle's supposed death from a heart attack had circulated since at least 2008. In 2010, the brothers issued a statement on their website stating that the story was "complete and utter rubbish". The BBC reported that the death hoaxes had upset young viewers, and had shocked Barry when they re-surfaced. The hoax was said to have initially spread via Facebook in 2008, but re-surfaced in 2010 via Twitter .

In December 2010, Barry announced his support for a proposal that one of the Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition government's planned free schools, a taxpayer-funded school independent of the local authority, should be established in Rotherham. In January 2011, it was announced that Barry had planned to incorporate a 100-pupil free school named Rotherham Central Free School in his hometown of Rotherham. His son's partner was to serve as the head teacher of the school. By February 2012, no premises, staff or pupils for the school had been confirmed, despite announcing an intention on opening in September of that year.

In February 2014, the Chuckle Brothers attended the trial of Dave Lee Travis. Paul stated that it was a "complete shock" that such an attack had occurred in their presence. After giving evidence, the pair posed for a selfie outside Southwark Crown Court with Paul sharing it to thousands of followers on his Twitter account. The Brothers had smiled for the photograph, and some deemed their actions inappropriate.

In March 2016, Barry received condemnation for sharing a Facebook post from the far-right political party Britain First. The post, originally shared in June 2015, called on politicians to strip migrants of their citizenship if they left the country to join a terror group. Following the unearthing of the post, Tommy Robinson, former leader of the English Defence League (EDL), came to Barry's defence, calling on people to "leave the man alone". Britain First subsequently described the incident as a "non-story".

In March 2020, Paul contracted COVID-19 and suffered mild illness (which he described as "not nice"). He recorded a video message for his Twitter followers, urging them to stay at home to slow the spread of the disease.

On 5 August 2018, Barry died after a period of ill health. Paul grieved Barry's death stating "I've not just lost my brother, I've lost my theatrical partner of many, many years and my very best friend."

Paul later revealed that his brother had been diagnosed with bone cancer, but had kept it secret from his manager, fans and Paul himself as he had wanted to perform for as long as possible. His funeral was held on 17 August at the New York Stadium, where Rotherham United play their home matches, and was attended by a number of show business friends; a large number of fans waited outside to pay their respects.

The Doobie Brothers ‘ 50th anniversary reunion, which is heading into its third year of touring, is yielding some new music as well.

Co-founders Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston tell Billboard they’re both stoked about the band’s next album, which it’s finishing work on with Michael McDonald. Simmons, the lone Doobie Brother to be part of the band’s entire 54-year career, shared the news with fans via a social media post.  “It’s very exciting,” he tells Billboard . “At one point I said, ‘Hey, we’re doing all these dates… As long as we’re doing this it would make sense to do a record. I think people would really get a kick out of that.'” With a chuckle he adds that, “We have yet to find out whether they’ll get a kick out of it or whether we’ll get kicked for it.”

The latter is unlikely, of course. McDonald’s tenure with the band — coming after he worked with Steely Dan — was among its most successful. Brought in to help the Doobies while Johnston was suffering burn-out, McDonald contributed hits such as “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “You Belong to Me” (co-written with Carly Simon) and “Real Love.” The triple-platinum Minute By Minute album in 1978, meanwhile, was the Doobies’ sole No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won three Grammy Awards including Record of the Year for the hit “What a Fool Believes.”

Simmons says he’s particularly happy to have himself, Johnston and McDonald — as well as fourth Doobies principal guitarist John McFee — fully engaged together on the new album. “It’s nice that Tom has an opportunity to interact with Mike musically because they have so much in common as far as their love of R&B and the people they admire,” he explains. “They never really got a chance to interact in this way before, so it makes me happy to see that happening. It’s more than the sum of our parts, I think.”

He’s particularly stoked about a gospel-flavored track called “Walk This Road” that features lead vocals by both McDonald and Johnston as well as guest Mavis Staples. “John Shanks had assumed I knew Mavis was singing on it, and I had no idea,” Simmons says with a laugh. “I hear this voice and I’m going, ‘What the…? Tommy is really killing it;’ it didn’t’ really sound like him but he has that quality to his voice. But it was Mavis, and… the three of them singing, I’m telling ya it just floored me. And there’s a bunch of other great tracks, just some killer — for me, anyway — great songs on this record, some ferocious tracks.”

Johnston, meanwhile, predicts that, “This one’s probably a little moreso diverse because Michael is involved in all the tunes, but that’s fine, man. It’s an extension of what we’re doing on the road.”

In addition to the album, McDonald is publishing What a Fool Believes: A Memoir , co-written with Paul Reiser, on May 21. He also contributed to 2022’s Long Train Runnin’: Our Story of the Doobie Brothers , which Simmons and Johnston helmed.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Simmons says of the continuing Doobies reunion. “We’re having a good time. It’s kind of continuing what we’ve been doing for the last 50 years and we still do things the same way for the most part, but having Mike on board again is great. I think it’s just having great artists, great creative people and talented guys that write the material… and then we have a great band. We’ve always had really great musicians, great singers. I think that really helps with how people perceive the band at any given time. It’s as strong now as it ever was.”
