Six days of racing across Switzerland add up to 13,400 metres of climbing and 712 kilometres

The 712 kilometres covered over the six-day Tour de Romandie provide 13,400 metres of elevation gain, which organisers say makes this the second-most difficult edition of the race in 75 outings. 

The prologue in Lausanne, Switzerland on Tuesday is a flat opening to a week of climbing, with a start around the new Stade de la Tuilière. Raiders will go around the old Stade de la Pontaise and then onto the runway at La Blécherette airport, which is a first for the race. Riders pass under the red kite halfway on the 1.5km section of the runway, then tackle a slight ascent with two technical turns to the finish line.

Stage 1 offers four category 3 climbs across 178km from La Grande Béroche to Romont.  The approach to the final includes two hilly loops of 46km each leading to the line at the fort of Romont Castle. The route has 3,000 metres of elevation gain, going up and down all day and the road rising again for a steep uphill finish in Romont. Back in 2019 at this same finish, David Gaudu won ahead of Rui Costa and Primož Roglič.

The riders head out from the port of Saint-Aubin-Sauges in La Grande Béroche, and hits the first climb just 30km into the race. The longest climb is Esmonts, 7 kilometres long at 4 per cent, with a little over 100km to go, and then the riders face a series of uncategorised climbs that pepper the rest of the route. The cat 3 Massonnens ascent is encountered twice, with its 2km of 6 per cent, and the second pass coming just 15km from finish. 

The routes for the next two days are loops, with the first on stage 2 travelling around the Gros-de-Vaud Region with the start and finish in Echallens. There are 2,600 metres of climbing with a flat 2.5km run-in for the finish. Spectators in Echallens will see the peloton pass through twice before the third pass ends at the finish line. In the meantime, the lone King of the Mountain climb is mid-way through the 168.2km stage at La Praz, a 6.7km ascent with an average gradient of just under 5 per cent, but steep pitches in double digits. 

The peloton will pass a lot of farmland on this rolling day, as Gros-de-Vaud is one of the top wheat growing areas in Switzerland. After a long descent of almost 20km into the valley, the race winds its back through the finish line area and then crosses a number of categorised climbs back to Echallens for the finale.

Stage 3 provides a loop around Granges-Marnand and through seven more villages as it begins and ends in Valbroye, located in the heart of the Broye Valley. 

The route has barely a a handful of kilometres strung together of flat terrain, as it bumps up and down with five categorised climbs in 165.1 kilometres. The first ascent begins after the opening five kilometres, pushing to the top of Dompierre, a category 3 ascent at a 5 per cent gradient. There are a series of four more cat 3 climbs on the route, with Dompierre ascended a second time as the penultimate obstacle before the finish. The final two climbs arrive with less than 20km to go for a great opportunity for a breakaway to attack. 

The Queen Stage is set for stage 4 , with six categorised climbs, four of them at category 1, and 4,160 metres of elevation gain over 180.1 kilometres between Aigle and Zinal / Val d'Anniviers. The start is from Aigle, known for its medieval heritage, wine-growing culture and site of the UCI World Cycling Centre.

After a flat start, the road tilts skyward after 40km for the first KOM at Nax. After a fast descent, the route will climb Les Pontis on the first of two passes. The road after the first ascent of Les Pontis continues to rise to category 1 Saint-Luc (1,564m) and second-category Les Ziettes d’en Bas. After a second pass of the intermediate sprint in Siere, the riders make the climb to Zinal across double first-category climbs, Les Pontis and Grimentz (1,563m). 

The race concludes with stage 5 , the individual time trial towards Villars-sur-Ollon. Riders will begin back in Aigle in front of the World Cycling Centre for 15.8 kilometres. The opening five kilometres are flat, leading to 900 metres of elevation gain from Oilan, through Huémoz, Chesières and into Villars.

Introduction

Né en 1947, au sortir de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, le Tour de Romandie vit en 2022 sa 75e édition. Modeste au regard d’autres compétitions de l’UCI World Tour comme le Giro ou le Tour de France, l'épreuve suisse a toujours su tirer son épingle du jeu. Elle a réussi, au fil des ans, à offrir un spectacle de qualité et à attirer les meilleurs cyclistes internationaux. Elle a également été le terrain de jeu des plus grands noms du cyclisme suisse: Kübler et Koblet en ses jeunes années, ou encore Rominger et Richard dans la première moitié des années 90. Tour de Romandie 1 1947: naissance d'un tour

En 1947, l’Union cycliste suisse fête ses 50 ans. A l’initiative du journaliste Max Girardet, une course à étapes est organisée entre le 15 et le 18 mai. Une quarantaine de coureurs y participent, répartis en 10 équipes. Quatre étapes, sur une distance totale de 755 kilomètres, sont inscrites au programme.

La Deuxième Guerre mondiale s'est achevée deux ans plus tôt. Durant les six ans de conflit, les frontières se sont refermées et la plupart des compétitions sportives ont été suspendues. Les cyclistes sont impatients de se mesurer sur le bitume, le public de pouvoir à nouveau vibrer aux exploits de ses champions.

Les organisateurs réussissent à attirer les vedettes du moment : l’Italien Gino Bartali, triple vainqueur du Giro et vainqueur du dernier Tour de France et bien sûr les stars du cyclisme suisse Ferdi Kübler et Hugo Koblet. Le premier Tour de Romandie est finalement remporté par le Belge Désirée Keteleer, devant Bartali et Kübler.

Tour de Romandie 2 Caractéristiques de l'épreuve

Le Tour de Romandie porte le label de l’UCI World Tour. A l'instar du Tour de France, du Giro ou encore du Tour de Suisse, il fait partie des compétitions du plus haut niveau du cyclisme sur route.

Dans le calendrier des courses, le Tour de Romandie, qui se tient habituellement fin avril-début mai, a lieu juste après le Tour des Flandres et la classique Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Il précède de peu le Tour d’Italie, dont il constitue pour de nombreux coureurs une sorte de prologue ou de répétition générale.

A ses débuts, le Tour de Romandie comprenait quatre étapes, dont une étape de contre-la-montre. Puis on lui ajoute un prologue. En 1973, une nouvelle formule est choisie : un prologue et cinq étapes, dont un contre-la-montre. Le caractère varié des configurations géographiques proposées, avec notamment des étapes dans les Alpes, est apprécié des cyclistes.

L'Irlandais Stephen Roche est le seul coureur à avoir conquis trois fois le maillot vert de l'épreuve. Douze autres l'ont gagné deux fois. Parmi eux, les Suisses Ferdi Kübler, Hugo Koblet, Tony Rominger et Pascal Richard.  Au niveau des nations, l’Italie est en tête avec treize victoires, suivie de la Suisse (douze victoires), la France (dix victoires) et la Belgique (six victoires). Le Vaudois Laurent Dufaux est le dernier Suisse à avoir remporté le Tour en 1998.

Tour de Romandie 3 Kübler et Koblet, la guerre fraternelle

Ils sont tous deux Suisses et qui plus est Zurichois. Ils ont fait les beaux jours du cyclisme dès le tournant des années cinquante. Ferdi Kübler (à gauche) et Hugo Koblet (à droite), surnommés les deux "K", seront les grands animateurs du Tour de Romandie naissant, et contribueront à populariser ce nouveau rendez-vous sportif.

En 1951, Ferdi Kübler est au sommet de sa forme. Vainqueur du Tour de France un an auparavant, il vient de remporter coup sur coup les classiques Liège-Bastogne-Liège et la Flèche Wallonne. Plus jeune, mais cycliste déjà confirmé, Hugo Koblet a dominé le Tour d'Italie 1950. Les deux hommes se retrouvent au départ du Tour de Romandie. En 1997, Ferdi Kübler se souvient encore de cette épreuve et de la rivalité complice qui l'a toujours lié à l'autre "K".

Tour de Romandie 4 La TSR couvre le Tour de Romandie

1954 : une première.

En 1954, année officielle de sa naissance, la jeune télévision romande commence à se faire une place dans le peloton (les images tournées avant cette date proviennent du Ciné-Journal suisse ou de cinéastes privés). Les journalistes Boris Acquadro et Humbert-Louis Bonardelli évoquent les conditions artisanales dans lesquelles les équipes de télévision ramenaient leurs images. Du point de vue sportif, cette édition sera dominée par le cycliste français Jean Forestier. Le Genevois Jean Brun remporte l’étape de Vallorbe.

Motard parisien, Michel Sergent a couvert près de vingt Tours de France. Inutile de dire qu'il connaît bien son métier. Le voici au travail sur le Tour de Romandie en 1976.

1976 toujours. Le quotidien d'un journaliste de presse sur le Tour de Romandie requiert des qualités proches de celui d'un cycliste, comme l'endurance et la rapidité.

Bertrand Duboux, Monsieur cyclisme

Journaliste sportif à la TSR, Bertrand Duboux fut durant trois décennies le commentateur de référence pour le cyclisme. Durant sa carrière, il aura couvert 25 Tours de Suisses, 30 Tours de France et 35 Tours de Romandie.

En 1997, à l'occasion du 50e anniversaire de l'épreuve, il réalise un documentaire qui raconte, année après année, les faits marquants de chacune de ces éditions. Réalisé à partir de documents d'archives, fourmillant d'informations historiques et d'anecdotes, ce document a constitué une base essentielle à notre dossier.

Tour de Romandie 5 Les stars internationales du Tour

La sensation merckx.

En mai 1968, alors que la révolution étudiante met le feu à Paris, un certain Eddy Merckx est au départ du Tour de Romandie. Quelques heures avant la course contre-la-montre par équipe qui inaugure la compétition, le journaliste Jean-Jacques Tillmann s'entretient avec lui à Genève. Champion du monde sur route un an plus tôt, le Belge de 23 ans a remporté en avril son premier Paris-Roubaix. La forme est là. Eddy Merckx sera le grand vainqueur de cette 22e édition. Le champion confirmera en gagnant le Tour d’Italie quelques semaines plus tard.

Le phénomène Hinault

En 1980, le Breton, déjà double vainqueur du Tour de France, s'invite au Tour de Romandie. Il va faire montre de son indomptable volonté en s'illustrant notamment lors de la montée de l’Alpe des Chaux dans une troisième étape d’anthologie.

Le triplé de Stephen Roche

Le Tour de Romandie a permis à des valeurs montantes du cyclisme de se révéler. Ce fut le cas pour Stephen Roche. Passé professionnel en 1981, il intègre l’équipe Peugeot. Il remporte trois courses par étapes, mais réalise une année 1982 plutôt médiocre. En 1983, son jeune talent s’épanouit sur les routes de Suisse romande. Il monte sur la plus haute marche du podium, tandis que son coéquipier Phil Anderson s’adjuge la deuxième place.

Un an plus tard, l’Irlandais doit faire face à une forte concurrence : celle de Laurent Fignon, vainqueur du Tour de France 1983, mais surtout celle du Neuchâtelois Jean-Marie Grezet, qui va frôler l’exploit.

En 1987, l’Irlandais est à nouveau de retour sur la plus haute marche. Avec ses trois victoires, il est et reste encore aujourd’hui le recordman de l’épreuve.  Après sa victoire de 1987,  Stephen Roche va remporter coup sur coup le Giro, le Tour de France et le championnat du monde sur route.

Tour de Romandie 6 Les Suisses à nouveau à l'honneur

Tony rominger et pascal richard : le renouveau helvétique.

En 1991, Tony Rominger a 30 ans. Il vient de gagner Paris-Nice. En 1989, il avait déjà brillé sur le Tour de Lombardie. Maîtrisant aussi bien la montagne que le contre-la-montre, il possède des arguments de poids avant de s’élancer dans le Tour de Romandie. Lors de la deuxième étape entre Saillon et La Fouly, Rominger, épaulé par ses coéquipiers, réussit à distancer ses principaux adversaires et à creuser durablement l'écart.

Quatre ans plus tard, en 1995, le Suisse renouvelle son exploit sur le Tour de Romandie. La même année il remporte le Tour d’Italie et devient le recordman du monde de l’heure.

Avant lui, aucun Romand n'avait réussi à inscrire son nom au palmarès du Tour de France. Le Vaudois Pascal Richard crée la sensation en 1993, puis en 1994. Champion du monde de cyclo-cross, Pascal Richard avait été sacré meilleur grimpeur du Tour de France 1991. Laurent Dufaux, l'ombre du doute

Le Vaudois Laurent Dufaux s’adjuge le Tour en 1998. Il devient la nouvelle star du public romand. Ce succès sera assombri quelques mois plus tard par l’affaire Festina, qui éclate lors du Tour de France.

Laurent Dufaux est le dernier Suisse à avoir remporté le Tour de Romandie.

Les années 2000 ont vu les triomphes de l'Italien Dario Frigo, du Britannique Tyler Hamilton ou encore de l'Australien Cadel Evans. La décennie suivante a été dominée par des coureurs comme Christopher Froome, Richie Porte et plus récemment par le Slovène Primoz Roglic et le Gallois Geraint Thomas.

Côté organisation, après quelques années de turbulences, les rênes du Tour ont été reprises par la société dirigée par Richard Chassot. L'ancien coureur cycliste est parvenu à assurer et à pérenniser l'événement. Annulé en 2020 à cause de la crise du Covid, le 75e Tour de Romandie se tient cette année du 26 avril au 1er mai.

12 UCI Women’s WorldTeams will line up at the 4th Tour de Suisse Women on June 15th in Villars-sur-Ollon. Joining them are seven UCI Women’s Continental Teams representing the second-highest level and, as with the men, the Swiss Cycling National Team.

Growing number of Women’s WorldTeams at the start

From 10 teams last year there are two more UCI Women’s WorldTeams at the start this year. “Thanks to sound organisation and appealing routes, we have been able to solidify our presence in the women’s racing calendar,” says Tour Director Olivier Senn. “With 12 of the 15 world’s best female teams, we can expect a top-class field of riders,” continues Senn.

The teams include the likes of Lidl-Trek, the team of TdS Women 2021 winner Lizzy Deignan, as well as Canyon//SRAM Racing and SD Worx-Protime, the two teams that boast the two strongest Swiss riders in Elise Chabbey and Marlen Reusser respectively.

At Continental Team level, EF Education-Cannondale should not be underestimated. The team led by young Swiss rider Noemi Rüegg has already secured a number of victories this season. Speaking about her participation in the Tour de Suisse Women, Rüegg says: “I’m all the more excited to be competing in my home race this year after not being able to take part last year.” Her ambition is to fight for a stage win. “With our team including strong climbers however, we are aiming for a top ranking in the overall classification,” Rüegg continues.

National Team rounds out the women’s peloton

As in the men’s Tour de Suisse, Swiss Cycling will field a young National Team in the women’s race. Mathias Frank, responsible for selecting the teams says: “We saw at the Tour de Romandie Féminin how the Swiss National Team can inspire cycling fans in Western Switzerland. It is therefore particularly pleasing to have them back at the start of the Tour de Suisse Women, which is being held entirely in this region.”

“It’s great for us to be able to participate in this fantastic race with a Swiss squad. Of course it is not yet known which athletes will be at the start. One thing is for sure though and that is we won’t just be along for the ride but will try to make our mark and challenge the big teams,” says women’s National Coach Edi Telser.

Also flying the Swiss flag alongside the National Team is Team Roland. For them the final two stages will be more or less home races. This is because the headquarters of the Cornu Group, to which the Roland brand belongs, is located in Champagne on Lake Neuchâtel.

Who are we?

The Tour de Roman­die is a stage cycling race that was founded in 1947 to celebrate the 50 th  anniversary of the Swiss Cycling Union. The first edi­tion brought together 40 riders across ten teams. At the time, there were only four stages on the pro­gramme and the total dis­tance covered was 755 kilo­metres!

A prestigious and legendary cycling race, it has had a place of honour in the international calendar for some years now and thus attracts the biggest riders in the world. In 2006, the Tour de Romandie received the UCI ProTour label and, since 2011, has been part of the prestigious UCI WorldTour circuit, alongside the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España in particular.

The media impact of the Tour de Romandie goes well beyond Swiss borders. The event brings together all the French-speaking can­tons as a single entity and repre­sents a powerful driver for touristic and cultural promotion for the Romandie region. The show put on by the Tour de Romandie delights the greatest sports fans and the beauty of the landscapes crossed, which are enhanced by the televisual production, captivates everybody.

As a key event in terms of the sporting heritage of French-speaking Switzerland, the Tour de Romandie enables the political, economic, sporting and media circles to further develop their relationships as well as promoting French-speaking Switzerland around the world.
