'Leguizamo Does America' takes viewers on a road trip, Latino style

John Leguizamo in Miami.

John Leguizamo offers up a simple inspiration for his latest series.

“I wanted to do a show where people watch this and say, ‘I wanna be Latino!’ or ‘Damn, too bad I’m not Latino!’”

Leguizamo, the acclaimed actor, comedian, producer and activist, takes viewers on a journey as the host of “Leguizamo Does America,” a six-part docuseries premiering Sunday on MSNBC and streaming on Peacock. Produced by NBC News Studios, each episode focuses on a different city — Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C. — and its unique Latino heritage, as Leguizamo explores its culture, people and monuments and its food and restaurants. One episode focuses on Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory.

John Leguizamo in Chicago.

Leguizamo takes viewers from sound stages in Hollywood to a salsa festival in New York’s Spanish Harlem and a sacred Indigenous ceremony in Puerto Rico — all while exploring Latino contributions to American life.

“Latinx history is American history,” Leguizamo says in one of the episodes, noting that Latinos have played critical roles, from the Revolutionary War to the birth of hip-hop.

“Leguizamo Does America” can be viewed as part of the emerging trend of celebrity travel shows , such as “Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico” (CNN) and “Down to Earth with Zac Efron” (Netflix). Leguizamo’s show covers a lot of ground, from the origins of New York’s famous bodegas, or corner shops, to the resident Latina conductor at the Los Angeles Opera. It features appearances by well-known actors like George Lopez , Gina Torres, Diane Guerrero and Michael Peña — who takes Leguizamo to his family's famed domino-playing gatherings in Chicago — as well as notable figures like Broadway director/choreographer Sergio Trujillo , Voto Latino’s María Teresa Kumar and fashion designer Raul Lopez.

John Leguizamo in New York.

But “Leguizamo Does America” doesn’t shy from addressing issues roiling the Latino community. In New York, Leguizamo hosts a dinner party, and, alongside comedian and actor Aida Rodriguez and others, he brings up the controversy over the word “Latinx,” a gender-neutral alternative to Latino or Latina — and why it's so polarizing to some.

In Los Angeles, Leguizamo talks about the challenge of creating Latino-themed stories with television producer Gloria Calderón Kellett . Because of Latinos' diversity and complexity, “we’re a hard audience, because there’s been such a starvation for representation that when one thing exists — it better represent all of us,” she says.

In Miami, actor and playwright Carmen Pelaez explains how immigration continues to transform the politics of her hometown. “Miami is the shore where the people of every failed government of Latin America land. ... You know what government is currently failing in Latin America from the accent you hear on the street in Miami.”

John Leguizamo in Miami.

From his early days as a solo theater artist in New York City to his well-known roles in films and television, Leguizamo, 62, has enjoyed a long and multifaceted career . He received a special Tony Award in 2018 for his Broadway show “Latin History for Morons” and earned Critic’s Choice and Emmy nominations for his role as Raymond Santana Sr. in the Netflix series “When They See Us.” In recent years, he has become an advocate for the Latino community, lending his voice to the struggle for more Latino representation in the entertainment industry.

Part of his reason for doing the show was that “it takes a long time for Latin kids to understand that they have something to be proud of, that everything they are is something beautiful and powerful.”

Leguizamo said most people — including many Latinos — don’t know that the first non-Indigenous resident of Manhattan was Dominican ( Juan Rodriguez ) or that one of television’s early moguls was Latino ( Desi Arnaz ). “This country was not made without us,” he said. “It was made because of us.”

'A show for all kinds of audiences'

Ben DeJesus, the show’s director , said the series “was one of the life-changing experiences of my career,” adding: “This is something we feel is worth celebrating: our Latino culture and the richness of our food, our music and our activism. It’s a lot of Latin themes and people, but this is really a show for all kinds of audiences.”

In addition to the content, DeJesus, 46, is especially proud that the “Leguizamo” production team included many Latinos. “John actually mentioned to us that, in his 30-some years in the business, he had never seen so many Latin names on a call sheet,” DeJesus said. “It was intentional — and important to us to bring in as many Latino crew members and staff as possible and to provide opportunities for them to contribute their talents.”

For executive producer Carolina Saavedra, one of the show's highlights was a visit to Washington, D.C.’s Gala Hispanic Theater . “Seeing the kids in the theater program there really touched me,” she said. “As an immigrant child, it brought back the experience of coming to this country, feeling alienated and initially being looked down upon because we don’t speak the language. Seeing that the kids at the Gala Theater have a safe space to express their pain, to express themselves, reminded me of the beauty and the value of this organization.”

John Leguizamo in Puerto Rico.

Saavedra described working on “Leguizamo Does America” as “the most meaningful job of my career.”

“I’ve always wanted to tell stories about real people, stories that would move people and start conversation, stories about class, race and gender,” she said. “All of these things are my passion, and with this show, I was able to do that.”

“I wanted to make sure that this was an entertaining show, an ingratiating show for any community that watches it, but also one that is specific to our Latino experience, which includes joy as well as hardship,” she added.

Leguizamo hopes the series inspires a new generation of Latino scholars and artists.

“Somewhere out there, there are more kids, kids like us,” he says on the show, “waiting to see their stories on stage, on screen, see their faces, see their lives. And they can — if we give them a chance.”

The show premieres Sunday at 10p.m. E.T. on MSNBC.

Stay tuned for the “Best Bite in Town,” all ready to air on Friday, April 12 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT with popular host Guy Fieri.

Watch Fieri as he takes a fun and fabulous cross-country road trip to visit some of America’s classic “greasy spoon” restaurants — diners, drive-ins and down and dingy dives — that somehow managed to do it up right for years.

Along with Noah Cappe, Jet Tila and Tiffani Faison, the cronies converge upon New Haven, Conn., where they embark on a fun-filled journey and sample amazing — and sometimes unusual — food in the city’s most highly recognizable restaurants.

According to the Food Network, they manage to hit all the best spots — everything from burgers and hot honey pizza joints to hot chicken and empanadas stops — but choosing one dish each along the weay prominent enough to present before Fieri’s panel of highly revered judges.

While Executive Producer Fieri’s schedule is packed to the hilt with visiting restaurants, in each episode, Cappe assembles a Bite Club featuring two chefs, including Faison, Shota Nakajima, Joe Sasto, Aarti Sequeira and Tila.

Collectively, watch as they explore the local food scene visiting six of the most popular spots. After a number of samplings, Noah and the Bite Club proceed to nominate three exceptional dishes to present to a panel of expert culinary judges to determine the “Best Bite In Town.”

“For years, I’ve been rollin’ out to towns big and small lookin’ for joints serving up amazing dishes,” said Fieri. “But no matter how many miles I put on the Camaro, I just can’t fit ‘em all into DDD. So, I’ve called in my buddy Noah Cappe and the Bite Club to help me out and they are hittin’ the road to find some killer small-town dishes on their own. But of course, I’ve gotta mix it up a bit, so we’re throwin’ in a dash of competition!”

This fascinating trip – covering around 178 miles (286km) – takes in important Bauhaus sites including Weimar’s new museum , 1923-built experimental house Haus am Horn and Dornburg, whose Rococo palaces (pictured) are home to the Bauhaus Pottery Workshop.

Other stops include Chemnitz, known as the City of Modernity thanks to buildings such as Villa Esche, and Leipzig’s Grassi Museum whose distinctive stained-glass windows were designed by Josef Albers, who taught at Bauhaus. The final stop – Dessau – was home to the school from 1925 until it was forced out of the country. Here, the Bauhaus Building, designed by the movement’s founder Walter Gropius as the new school and workshop, is now UNESCO-protected.

These are Germany's most historic sights

Officially designated as the Romantic Rhine route, this road trip scoops up some of the country’s most beguiling cities and stunning landscapes into its 155 miles (250km). The scenic journey starts in riverside Düsseldorf before heading south to Cologne, whose fabled Gothic cathedral dominates the landscape.
Dubbed the Asparagus Route, this journey really is all about the vegetable, although the pretty scenery should appeal even to those who dislike the spears. Lower Saxony is the heart of asparagus growing in Germany and this loop links up around 470 miles (756km) of towns, farms and countryside. The route officially starts and ends in Burgdorf, known for white asparagus, though Hanover is the closest big city (around half an hour away by car). Then it’s a journey tracing the vegetable’s heritage from root to tip, with Lüneburg Heath (pictured) among the gorgeous places it grows.

The road is happily well-signposted and also traverses the asparagus-growing regions of Brunswick, Mittelweser and Oldenburg Münsterland. During harvest season, usually from April to June, the spears can be sampled along the route and in restaurants, while the plants – bearing red berries – look lovely in fall too. Bookending the trip, Hanover has some incredible architecture including the 14th-century Market Church and the elegant, castle-like New Town Hall (pictured) dating from 1913.

Fun games to pass the time on your next roadtrip.

Road trip games can pass the time on a long trip.

Roadtrips are an enjoyable way to see changing scenery, a chance to stay overnight in retro roadside motels, and an excuse to pull over to see the quirky roadside attractions that you’ll only find in small town America.

But road trips also mean long stretches of flat highway where the oohs and ahhs slow down, the snacks run out, and you need a break from the podcast you’ve been streaming.

Pass the time in the car with a game of 'Would You Rather?'

Enter road trip games. They’ll help you pass the time between stops and hopefully squash any questions like “are we there, yet?”.

From games that can be played among a group of friends or couples to road trip games to entertain kids, these games will help keep you entertained on the road.

Top 7 Road Trip Games to Play

1. table topics.

Table Topics is a deck full of fun conversation starter cards. The game is recommended for ages 12 and up, and the cards can spur conversation between a couple or a group. The deck has 135 cards and questions range from: “Is it more important to be book smart or street smart?” and “If you could have front-row seats to any concert who would you like to see?”

Is Leadership an Art or a Science

Apple confirms major iphone changes with new app features enabled, o j simpson dies of cancer at 76, 2. mad libs.

The scribe in charge of the Mad Libs tablet will be prompted to ask participants for verbs, adjectives, nouns, and so on, which will then be put into a short narrative. The catch: No one knows the context that the words they toss out will be put in, so the story ends up being a goofy one. This is a great game for kids in elementary school who are starting to learn the ins and outs of nouns, adjectives and the like.

3. “Would You Rather?”

You could come up with your own scenarios for a game of “Would You Rather” where you pit two outrageous scenarios against one another. But the “Would You Rather” deck of cards is loaded with pre-set predicaments: “Would you rather own a machine that makes any food you want or prints $50 per week?” The family edition has 200 cards that were made with multi-generation road trips in mind.

4. License Plate Game

A road trip classic, and a fun one to play with kids, the license plate game challenges everyone in the car to collectively spot license plates from all 50 states. Pro tip: Print out a map of the United States to keep track of all the states you’ve collected.

When the karaoke is over, play a round of song trivia.

5. License Plate Word Scramble

When you’ve already done your Wordle for the day, you can engage your fellow passengers with a game of word scramble. Just look at a plate in a nearby lane and extract the letter — then challenge everyone to come up with a word with the letters in the plate. For example, if the license plate has the letters NKE in it, the word could be “Banker.”

6. Song Trivia

Every great road trip has a good playlist. But turn your tunes into a game by seeing who can name the singer, song title, and, for a bonus round, the year the song came out. You can set up a playlist in advance for this game or just scroll through the stations.

7. The Geography Game

If you loved social studies as a kid, this game is for you. One person starts the game by throwing out a geographic location (i.e. city, state, mountain region, river, etc.). Let’s say the starting word is California. The next person then comes with a location that starts with the last letter of the previous name, so, in this case, the letter “A,” which could be Alaska, Appalachians, Atlanta, and so on. You could mix up the themes, too, or narrow the categories, too. Other categories could be types of food, animals, countries, or band names.

Take a trip back to the Wild West on the Gunsmoke Trail

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Wichita and three other Kansas cities are launching a new collaboration called the Gunsmoke Trail.

It’s a road trip that takes you through towns mentioned in the Emmy-winning show “Gunsmoke,” a TV western drama series based in and around Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. “Gunsmoke” is the longest-running western in television history, originally running from 1955 to 1975 totaling 635 episodes.

Abilene, Dodge City, and Hays will also participate in the program.

The Gunsmoke Trail is accessible through a mobile “passport” program. This program allows smartphone users to check in at different stops and earn points for prizes.

“So many people loved the Western heritage, and I know it’s going to be a lot of fun for Kansans to visit these different towns and see these attractions and just be proud of where we live,” said Jemelle Holopirek, Visit Wichita’s director of public relations.

Examples of Wild West-themed locations that visitors will be directed to include:

Wichita : Old Cowtown Museum, Wichita-Sedgwick Country Historical Museum, Old Town Wichita, The Keeper of the Plains, Chisolm Trail, The Mid-America All-Indian Museum, Historic Delano District

Hays: Historic walking Tour on the Bricks in Downtown Hays, where bronze plaques mark the first shops, saloons, and shootout

Abilene: World’s Largest Belt Buckle, Hitching Post Restaurant and Saloon

Dodge City: Boot Hill Museum, Santa Fe Depot and Dodge City Trail of Fame

If you want to sign up for the program, visit KansasGunsmokeTrail.com or call 785-628-8202.
