Learn what TSA has to say about taking your vitamins

To avoid getting hung up at airport security, it's best to be aware of the rules and regulations the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has when it comes to packing vitamins and medications in your checked and carry-on bags.

Here’s all you need to know before boarding your next flight.

Pills and powders

TSA has no restrictions on bringing vitamins in pill form and powder supplements in your checked luggage or carry-on bags. You can pack these items in their original packaging or transfer to pill organizers. You won’t need to declare or show them to TSA agents when going through security.

Capsules, soft gels and liquid vitamins in your carry-on luggage

Over-the-counter, non-prescription capsules and soft gels can be packed in carry-on bags like any other vitamin pill. However, with non-prescription liquid vitamins and supplements, you must follow TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. This rule requires all carry-on liquids, gels and aerosols to be placed in a 3.4 ounce (100ml) container and packed with other liquids in a quart-sized, clear ziplock bag.

When going through security, you may be asked to place this resealable bag of liquids on the conveyor belt along with your other belongings.

Prescription vitamins and medication in your carry-on luggage

You can put prescription vitamins and medication of any kind (pills, gels, liquids, etc.) of any quantity in your carry-on bag, but they must be declared to TSA. An agent will need to inspect them as you go through airport security. The pharmacy's prescription label with your name on it must be on the bottle or packaging.

Vitamins in checked bags

TSA has no size restrictions for packing vitamins and supplements in checked luggage when you fly. This means you can relax and pack as much as you need for your trip.

Keep in mind, however, there still are rules for total amount of medicinal and toiletry liquids in checked bags. They can’t exceed 70 ounces (2 kg) or 68 fluid ounces (2 L) per person. TSA also states that the “capacity” of the containers must not exceed 18 ounces (0.5 kg) or 17 fluid ounces (500 ml).

To read TSA’s rules in their entirety, see the sections on vitamins and liquid medications .

Yes, You Can Bring Vitamins on a Plane: The TSA, Tips, and More

On this page.

travel carry vitamins

It can be confusing to figure out how to travel with your vitamins. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take.

We all have to travel sometimes. Whether it’s for a planned family getaway or for a business trip, traveling can be a real source of joy. But our health care routines don’t stop just because we’re spending time away from home. To get the most out of traveling, it’s important to figure out the best ways to bring our vitamins and supplements along with us.

Why it's important to bring vitamins while traveling

Your vitamin routine is an important part of your health. Vitamins help your health in many ways, supplying your body with necessary nutrients and even making up for vitamin deficiencies. Taking your vitamins is also important for supporting your immune system. Keeping your immunity up and staying healthy while traveling is a good way to make sure you get the most out of your trip.

TSA rules on traveling with vitamins

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is a government agency that sets the rules for the transportation systems in the United States. They have some rules for how you can transport your vitamins.

Any medications in pill or solid form – vitamins qualify under this definition – must go through security screening. The TSA also recommends that any medication be clearly labeled, since this will help accelerate the screening. When it comes to prescription medication labels, some states have different requirements. Be sure to check the laws that apply to the state you’re heading to. Powdered supplements should be placed in your checked back if you’re bringing more than 12 oz; otherwise it may need to go in its own bin during X-ray screening.

If you’re traveling with medically necessary liquid medication, you must inform your TSA officer and then separate the medication from your other belongings before the screening begins. You must also declare accessories associated with your liquid medication – IV bags, freezer packs, pumps, and so on. Clearly label these items, too. That said, liquid vitamins would likely not qualify as “medically necessary” medication. (More on traveling with liquid vitamins below.)

Keep in mind that you are fully responsible for displaying, handling, and repacking your medication when screening is required.

Can you take vitamins in your carry-on or personal item?

Yes, you can take vitamins in your carry-on and personal item luggage . While not required, it can help the screening process to have your vitamins clearly labeled or in their original containers.

Liquid vitamins and supplements do still have volume limits of 3.4 oz, or 100 mL, just lke all carry-on liquids. It’s important to remember that the TSA website does note that all final decisions are up to the discretion of the TSA checkpoint officer.

Checked luggage regulations for vitamins

Liquid vitamins can be packed in your checked luggage and are not subject to the 3.4 oz requirement for carry-ons.

TSA's stance on powdered vitamins

There are no restrictions on powders when flying between U.S. airports. Just note that powders over 12 oz, or 350 mL, must be placed in a separate bin during the screening process and may require additional screening or need to be opened. To make things easier, place larger volumes of powders over 12 oz in your checked bag to skip additional screening.

TSA's regulations on herbal supplements

Herbal supplements that are capsules, powdered, or tablets have no restrictions. Liquid herbal supplements must follow the liquid restrictions and be limited to 3.4 oz, or 100 mL, for carry-on and personal item luggage.

Checked luggage does not have any restrictions for herbal supplements in any form.

Do you need any special documentation or prescription to carry vitamins on a plane?

The TSA does not require any special documentation, prescription, or doctor’s note for you to carry vitamins on a plane. But if you want extra support to create a smoother travel process, you can consider doing any of the following, which may simplify the screening process:

  • Make sure all products are in clearly labeled bottles, or keep them in their original bottle.
  • Carry a letter from your healthcare provider, on official letterhead, stating your medical need for the vitamins or supplements.
  • Have a backup plan for if your items are confiscated from TSA for an unforeseeable reason. For example, know where you can purchase more at your destination.
  • Split your vitamins between your carry-on and checked baggage. In unlikely circumstances, this gives you more options if your carry-on vitamins are confiscated or if your checked luggage is misplaced.

Do vitamins have to be in original bottles when flying?

The short answer: no. However, keeping vitamins in their original bottles when flying can help reduce questions and potential complications during the screening process. The great thing about Care/of’s personalized vitamin packs is that they are unopened and clearly labeled as Care/of products and therefore may reduce hassle during TSA screening.

Will the TSA open your vitamins?

Typically, TSA will not open your vitamin packages. You are not required to declare or notify TSA of your vitamins in your luggage. The only exceptions are with liquid supplements or powders over 12 oz (350 mL), the latter of which you need to place in a separate bin during the X-ray screening process. All decisions are ultimately up to TSA checkpoint agent.

5 Tips for traveling with vitamins

Liquid vitamins.

Per TSA regulations, liquid supplements can only be transported below a certain amount: 3.4 oz or 100 mL. You may want to consider leaving liquid vitamins at home. They may not be worth the hassle. You can opt for capsule or pill form of these supplements while you are traveling. If you do pack liquids, be sure to put them in a plastic bag; that way, if they spill, they won’t get all over your belongings.

Look for vitamins that come in tablets, capsules and soft gels

You’re allowed to travel with vitamins in tablet, capsule, and soft gel form, per TSA regulations. Soft gels are not considered liquids.

Pack vitamins in carry-on bag

If possible, you may want to find a way to pack your vitamins in a carry-on bag. That way, you have easy access to your vitamins, and you’re not at risk of being without them in the event that your checked luggage is lost or delayed. Another good rule of thumb is to pack a few extra of each supplement, in case you end up traveling a little longer than you originally thought you would.

Care/of’s daily pill packs make it easy to travel with your supplements. Pack enough packs for each day of your trip, plus an extra one or two just in case!

Have a pouch or pill case to store vitamins

Having a pouch or pill case to store your vitamins can also make them easier to transport. Perhaps you’ll want to invest in a container for the amount of days you will be away. Some containers are even labeled by time of day or by days of the week, helping you stay consistent with your vitamin routine. If your supplements need to stay cold, you can travel with a frozen gel ice pack. Just know that the gel ice pack must be frozen or partially frozen at the time of TSA screening, or else it will be considered a liquid and subject to liquid volume restrictions.

How you pack your vitamins is up to you. When dealing with Care/of personalized supplement packs, though, everything is pre-packed for you. You just grab and go!

International travel considerations

When traveling back to the U.S. from an international location, TSA states that powders over 12 oz, or 350 mL, stored in carry-on luggage may require additional screening at the TSA checkpoint, which is similar to travel within the U.S. as well. If the officer cannot resolve the questions about the powder, it may be disposed of. TSA recommends putting powders in your checked bag for best chances.

For travel regulations when flying out of international airports, best practice is to check that the travel regulations of that particular airport or country.

Final takeaways

The work of staying healthy doesn’t stop just because you’re traveling! Fortunately, there are ways to safely and easily bring your vitamins along with you. Buy a nice travel pack and stay up-to-date on the TSA guidelines. When possible, try to bring your vitamins as part of a carry-on item.

Can You Take Vitamins On A Plane?

When you are traveling for work or for an awesome vacation you want to bring the things you use in your daily life with you and this includes vitamins for most of us .

Now, you have probably never thought about whether you can or can’t bring vitamins on a plane since they are perfectly legal and good for you. But, there are some Transportation Security Administration rules you should be aware of in regards to traveling with them on a plane.

Join me as I run through everything you need to know about bringing vitamins on a plane so that you can ensure your vitamins aren’t confiscated by the TSA on your way.

Can You Pack Vitamins In Your Carry On Luggage

Yes, you can bring vitamins on a plane in your carry-on luggage but there are different rules for different types of vitamins according to the TSA.

Solid vitamins, gummy vitamins, and soft gel vitamins can be carried in any quantity in your carry-on baggage without any worries. You might think soft gel capsules would be considered a liquid but they are considered a solid.

If you are traveling with powdered supplements, including powdered vitamins, you are allowed to pack them in your carry-on luggage but only in certain quantities.

If your powder vitamins are greater in volume than 12 ounces or 350 ml, you have to put them in a separate box for screening, just like with your laptop.

Liquid vitamins are also allowed in your carry-on bag but they must comply with the TSA’s rule of 3-1-1, the standard liquid rule you would have followed for your carry-on bag. Your liquid vitamins must be in containers of 100 ml or 3.4 ounces and under.

If you have a prescription for your liquid vitamins and the containers are larger than this, you can bring it in your carry-on bag. You must however declare it to security as a TSA-allowed “medically necessary liquid” and show your prescription to prove it.

Can You Pack Vitamins In Your Checked Luggage

All vitamins including liquid vitamins, gummy vitamins, solid vitamins, soft gel vitamins, and powder vitamins are allowed in your checked luggage in any quantities.

I would therefore recommend packing vitamins in your checked luggage as you won’t have any issues at any security checkpoint. If you want some vitamins for the plane, just pack what you need in your carry-on and leave the rest in your checked luggage.

Can You Bring Liquid Vitamins On A Plane?

Yes, you can bring liquid vitamins on a plane in both your checked baggage and carry-on bag too, but the rules are different for each.

You can pack liquid vitamins in any volume and quantity in your checked baggage without any worries. If you want to take them onto the plane in your carry-on bag, you will have to ensure they are in containers with a volume equal to or less than 3.4 ounces or 100 ml.

You will also have to ensure that all your liquids from shampoos to vitamins fit in a single bag that is issued before the TSA checkpoint.

If you have a prescription for your liquid vitamins, they will fall under the TSA-allowed “medically necessary liquid” rule. You will have to hand it over at the checkpoint for inspection and show the officer a copy of your prescription too.

Do Vitamins Need to Be in Their Original Containers When Flying?

Your vitamins do not have to be in their original containers when you travel with them on a plane. But, it would be wise to have them in their original containers as it would make an inspection go a lot faster.

Let’s say a TSA agent or airport security officer asks to look in your bag and finds a bag of unmarked pills, what do you think their reaction will be? They will have to swab the bag for explosives as this is airport security policy.

But, if the TSA agent or airport security officer opens your bag and sees an original container that says Vitamin-D supplements on the side, then they will be far less suspicious and it will make things a lot smoother. They might still have to swab and scan it, but it will be a far more relaxing experience.

Can You Take Your Vitamins During Your Flight?

Yes, the TSA allows you to bring all types of vitamins on a plane in your carry-on as long as you follow the rules laid out above. You can also take/eat your vitamins on the plane so that you can boost your immunity while you travel and arrive at your destination as healthy as possible.

Be sure to travel with a water bottle so you can take your vitamins whenever you like and don’t have to wait for the flight attendant to serve you. Be sure to have the right vitamins to support you through the flight too.

How To Pack Vitamins For Air Travel

Now that we know that there aren’t many restrictions for taking vitamins on planes, apart from liquid vitamins, let’s look at how best to pack them.

I would recommend always taking your vitamins on a plane in your carry-on luggage as you never know if your checked bags are going to arrive or not and the last thing you want is to not have your vitamins with you

If you take a lot of vitamins then maybe avoid flying with liquid vitamins are you will have a limit to the amount you can carry with you

Avoid taking solid vitamins or powder vitamins if you are traveling to a hot and humid country as they will attract moisture and start to degrade. Make sure to bring vitamins like gummy vitamins or soft gel vitamins as they will not be affected

Pack them in a travel pill case to separate out the different types, or leave them in their original packaging Make sure the vitamins packed have a label so a TSA officer can identify them as vitamin pills quickly and easily

Be sure to have your own water bottle with you so that you can take your vitamins whenever you need to, like on the plane

Tips on Traveling With Vitamins

Now that we know that traveling with vitamins is no issue at all, let’s look at some tips about picking the right vitamins and making traveling with vitamins easier.

Buy Vitamins In Solid Containers

To save you from buying another container to put your vitamins in for travel, buy vitamins that come in a solid container, to begin with.

Look for containers that don’t break or bend so your vitamins are protected and you can even find some that maintain the internal temperature so your vitamins don’t melt.

You may have read on some packages that you don’t need to keep vitamins in the fridge if they are in their original packing, and that is why it feels cold inside a vitamin container sometimes.

To ensure your vitamins survive your trip, make sure to buy them in excellent original packaging.

Buy Vitamins You Don’t Have To Take Often

The last thing you want to be doing is carrying more vitamin tablets than you need to or taking a pill every 3 hours when you are on vacation.

You can find vitamins that only need to be taken once a day or twice a day which is a lot more convenient when it comes to packing and taking them when on holiday. You can take one in the morning and forget about it until tomorrow or the evening.

Pick The Vitamins That Will Ensure You Have A Great Vacation

So, which vitamins are going to ensure you stay healthy and feel great on your vacation? This is especially important since you have sat on a plane with 100s of people and even more viruses.

The four vitamins you will want to take on the plane are vitamin D, vitamin C, magnesium, and melatonin. Vitamin D and C boost bodily functions and immunity while magnesium ensures muscle health, and melatonin helps you sleep during the flight and when you have jet lag.

Other great vitamins or supplements include Vitamin B12, Vitamin E, Chlorella, and Spirulina. Chlorella and Spirulina remove damaged DNA and strip your body from cosmic radiation picked up during the flight.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that boosts your immunity and Vitamin B12 supports your blood and nervous systems while you are flying.

Bring an Extras

Always bring an extra bottle of your best vitamins with you, just in case you need a boost or you lose your main bottle of vitamins. You never know if you will have access to vitamins where you are going, and may not be able to replace a lost bottle.

Also, vitamins can be very expensive in some countries so it saves to have some extras so you don’t have to buy locally.

Winding Up

Never worry about bringing vitamins on a plane, it is perfectly legal in both your carry-on and checked baggage. I would always bring vitamins in my carry-on and avoid liquid vitamins so that there are no limits to how much you can bring.

  • The Frequent Flyer's Guide to Traveling with Vitamins

It’s easy to lose track of a few things when you’re traveling, but the one thing you don’t want to lose track of is your health.

When you’re waking up early for your flight, spending your entire day in the air at 35,000 feet, and sitting in a box full of germs and airborne viruses, your body is subject to a few health impacts .

And that’s just the physical act of traveling! Not to mention what happens to your body when you arrive at your destination.

It’s important to make sure your body has what it needs no matter where you are. With this guide, we’ll help you understand everything you need to know about traveling with vitamins and supplements.

The Importance of Traveling with Vitamins

It might not seem like it sometimes, but packing vitamins is more important than remembering to bring your laptop or portable charger.

Our bodies need a daily dose of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that help us maintain our overall health and boost our immunity to prevent getting sick. We typically get these vitamins through a balanced, whole-food diet.

Read More:  Research Shows You’re 100x More Likely to Get Sick on a Plane. Here's Why

But when we travel, we don’t always get the chance to take in all the vitamins our bodies need.

Traveling with vitamin supplements is essential for your health because finding healthy food options can be scarce when you travel. It's also one of the many Just because you’re on the go doesn’t mean you should sacrifice your daily routine that keeps your body operating at peak production levels.

Making sure vitamins are a priority when you travel can give you the energy and strength you need for your next trip and benefit your overall health.

Best Vitamins and Supplements for Traveling

There are 13 different vitamins that your body needs and a ton of other supplements out there that help with your health, but only a few are essential for travel.

When you travel you miss out on things like getting enough sunlight and enough whole-food options plus your immune system is constantly fighting off all the germs that can be on the plane. Some of the best vitamins to bring with you can help you give your body the boost it needs.

#1. Vitamin D

This vitamin is crucial to bring with you during your travels because it supports bone, blood, and immune system health. Vitamin D allows your body to absorb calcium to build strong bones. It also helps maintain phosphorus levels in the blood and helps your immune system fight off disease.

Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin because you absorb it through exposure to the sun. But during most trips, your only exposure to the sun will be when you’re entering or leaving the airport. Overall, you won’t be absorbing much Vitamin D when you travel. Vitamin D can also be found in foods such as fatty fish and mushrooms, but you won’t usually find many of those options on a menu at the airport or on the plane.

Bringing Vitamin D supplements with you when you fly will help your bones, blood and immune system maintain its healthy functions even when you don’t have time to walk in the sunshine.

#2. Vitamin C

Planes and airports are a hub for all kinds of germs. Even if you bring as much hand sanitizer as the TSA will allow, you need to be sure your immune system is up to the challenge when you fly.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that helps your immune system by giving your white blood cells the boost they need to fight off disease. It’s also important for maintaining your blood pressure, which could increase with the stress that comes from traveling.

Vitamin C supplements come in many forms but the most popular is a powdered drink mix or tablet.

One pack of  Flight Elixir has 110% of your recommended daily Vitamin C intake through its natural ingredients like the Camu Camu berry, goji berries, and coconut water.

The battle against airborne germs can seem endless, but supplementing with vitamin C (and staying hydrated!) can keep your immune system strong enough to fight off disease.

#3. Melatonin

Abrupt changes to your time zone and sleep schedule are sometimes unavoidable when you travel.

Melatonin is a natural alternative to other sleep aids that can help you get some sleep when you find yourself tossing and turning away from home.

One of the most natural ways to get a dose of melatonin is through the tart cherry, which is a key ingredient of the Flight Elixir .

With the added melatonin from the tart cherry, Flight Elixir can help you get some much-needed rest and back on track with your circadian rhythm during an exhausting travel day.

#4. Magnesium

Sitting in a middle seat for a long haul flight with no hope of stretching your legs can put a lot of stress on your muscles up until it’s time to land. Magnesium is a great supplement to help when you’re crammed onto a tiny plane and need to help your muscles relieve tension and aid with overall soreness

Falling asleep on the plane is also tricky sometimes, but magnesium naturally relaxes your body so it can help you avoid issues when you’re trying to fall asleep on the plane . Getting enough sleep and protecting your muscles from any extra strain is crucial to keep you feeling rested and ready for the challenges you might face on your next trip.

Circulation Support

#5. vitamin b12 .

Take care of your blood flow instead of stressing about traffic flow when you’re traveling by bringing Vitamin B12 with you on your next trip. This vitamin is essential for the health of both your blood and nervous systems so having it with you will help support healthy blood circulation.

Vitamin B12 can also help you sharpen your focus when you feel like you’re in a fog because it supports healthy brain function. That’s super important when you’re feeling rundown at the terminal but still need to read the signs to find your gate.

As an added bonus, Vitamin B12 can even help improve your mood when the stress of traveling is putting a damper on your travel day.

#6. Iron Supplements

Iron is a major supporter of red blood cells and helps produce the protein that allows these cells to bring oxygen to other parts of the body. Getting enough iron in your day is crucial for proper blood circulation, which is even more important when you’re out traveling all day.

While supplements are one way to get enough iron, you can also find iron in many natural foods like leafy greens, quinoa, and goji berries.

Cosmic Radiation Support

#7. vitamin e.

Antioxidants give our bodies a boost when it comes to fighting off disease and Vitamin E is a great antioxidant for traveling. Not only will Vitamin E support your immune system, but it also helps your body fight off free radicals, which you’re more exposed to when you’re traveling on a plane.

When we fly, we’re more at risk to the effects of cosmic radiation, so packing Vitamin E along can help you fight off the damage this radiation can cause to your cells.

#8. Chlorella and Spirulina

Another way to heal from the effects of cosmic radiation is the natural supplements Chlorella and Spirulina. These two strains of algae bind to radioactive particles remove them from your system entirely. They also help repair DNA damage to already harmed cells from your previous travels.

Flight Elixir contains both Chlorella and Spirulina as a way to fight off the effects of cosmic radiation so you can keep traveling as much as you want without having to worry about the long term effects on your body.

Digestion & Bloating

#9. whole foods powders.

If you’re someone who likes to travel light, you can get a little bit of everything you need with a whole foods powders, which are made from greens, vegetables, seaweed, probiotics, and digestive enzymes.

With the added bonus of probiotics and digestive enzymes, whole food powders can also help with the symptoms of bloating and aid in digestion when you’ve been traveling all day.

Read More :  Bloating after Flying: What Causes Jet Belly & How to Prevent It

One of the best natural sources of digestive enzymes is papaya (which is why it’s a key ingredient we use!). Papaya is a rich source of the enzymes papain, chymopapain, caricain and glycyl endopeptidase that each aid in healthy digestion.

TSA Rules for Traveling with Vitamins

The TSA has a lot of rules that can be tough to remember when you’ve already got so many things on your mind.

You might think that the TSA restricts transporting vitamins and supplements because they could be mistaken for other medications. But in reality, the TSA rules for vitamins are simple.

Vitamins and Supplements in your Carry-On

Traveling with vitamins in your carry-on

You can carry the following in your carry-on:

  • An unlimited number of vitamins in pill or tablet form (though you may be stopped at the security checkpoint if you have massive quantities)
  • Powdered supplements (such as protein powders, greens powders, and Flight Elixir !)

If your vitamins are in liquid form, you just have to comply with the TSA’s policy on liquids which restricts containers to 3.4 ounces or less.

As long as you comply with the liquid policy, there’s no need to inform the TSA officer of your vitamins or leave them in their original packaging.

Knowing that the TSA actually allows you to bring your vitamins with limited restrictions can help you be able to take your vitamins before and after you’re through security.

Vitamins and Supplements in your Checked Bags

Traveling with anything in your checked baggage is much more simple than in a carry-on.

You can typically get away with more volume without getting stopped at the security checkpoint to be searched, and you can pack full-sized bottles of liquid vitamins and supplements in your checked bags.

Just be careful to pad any glass bottling properly so nothing gets broken in transit. The last thing you want is to arrive at your destination and find a broken bottle of fish oil ruined your clothes and suitcase!

Tips for Packing Vitamins for Your Flight

Making sure you have enough vitamins for your trip and that they are easy to access on a flight is crucial to staying healthy when you travel. You’ll want to be sure you have everything you need and can find your vitamins with ease on your next trip. Here are a few tips for packing vitamins for your travels.

#1. Bring Extra Doses of Your Daily Vitamins

When you’re packing your carry-on make sure that you bring at least two days worth of vitamins, even if it’s a short trip, just in case you can’t get a hold of your checked luggage right away. Having vitamins with you at all times helps you be prepared for the unexpected so you don’t have to sacrifice your health when something goes wrong.

#2. Keep Vitamins Close in your Carry-on

You might be on the go all day and the only time you have to take your vitamins is while you’re sitting on the plane. In that case, you’ll need your vitamins packed in your carry-on so you can take them while you have the time.

Waiting for checked luggage or for the free time after a day is already done can make you miss out on key nutrients for your travel day so keep your vitamins handy and ready to go in your carry-on luggage.

#3. Try a Travel Pill Case

The TSA allows for an unlimited number of vitamins in pill form, but packing different pills that all look the same can get confusing. A great way to avoid the hassle of digging through your bag to find the right pills is a travel pill case. You can fill each day accordingly with the vitamin dosage of your choosing.

#4. Bring The Travel Water Bottle

When you’re rushing through the airport to make it to your gate, you don’t always have time to stop for a bottle of water. Bringing The Travel Water Bottle with you on your flight can help you when you need to have a little water for swallowing vitamins in pill form or having something to pour your powdered vitamins into.

Taking Vitamins on the Plane

The TSA allows you to bring vitamins in pill, liquid and powdered form as long as you comply with the overall liquid standards so you’ll be able to take your vitamins with you on the plane.

Just like any other medication, here are a few helpful reminders for taking vitamins on the flight:

  • Bring water with you so you can take your vitamins even before the flight attendants have started their service
  • Keep track of your daily doses if you’re headed to a new time zone and try to stay with the same time as you would if you were at home
  • Take sleep-aiding vitamins with care to maximize their help in beating the effects of jet lag

Traveling with Vitamins Made Simple

Taking your vitamins is an important part of everyday life, but it can get lost in the midst of a busy travel day. Knowing what vitamins to bring with you and how to bring them on your flight can help you maintain your health while you’re away from home.

What vitamins do you bring with you when you travel? Did we forget any vitamins you think are important? Do you have any suggestions for maintaining your health when you travel? Let us know in the comments below.

Traveling can be thrilling, but it also comes with its fair share of questions and concerns, especially when it involves health supplements like vitamins. Ever stood at the security line panicking about the vitamins in your carry-on? You’re not alone!

TL;DR: Key Takeaways

  • TSA allows vitamins in carry-on and checked bags.
  • Liquid vitamins must comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule .
  • Common travel oversight: Forgetting vitamins in bags, causing delays.
  • Know the rules to avoid security hold-ups .

The In-Flight Vitamin Dilemma

A common oversight.

It’s a scenario many travelers face: you’ve packed your bags, headed to the airport, and just as you’re about to go through security, you remember the vitamins tucked away in your carry-on. Surprisingly, vitamins are among the most commonly forgotten items at airport security checks , as noted by the TSA. This forgetfulness can lead to unnecessary delays and a bit of frustration both for you and the security staff. Remembering your vitamins is more than just about avoiding a snag in your travel plans; it’s about ensuring you have everything you need for a healthy journey.

When we travel, our bodies are exposed to different environments, time zones, and diets. Vitamins can play a crucial role in helping us maintain our health under these varying conditions. Forgetting them can disrupt our health routine, potentially affecting our overall travel experience.

The TSA’s Take on Vitamins

Navigating TSA regulations can sometimes feel like a complex puzzle, but when it comes to vitamins, their stance is straightforward and clear. You are allowed to bring vitamins on a plane, both in your carry-on and checked luggage. This flexibility ensures that you can have your essential supplements close at hand, especially important if you have specific health needs or are on a strict vitamin regimen.

However, the rules change slightly when dealing with liquid vitamins. TSA’s 3-1-1 liquids rule comes into play here. Any liquid vitamins must be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters), and all containers must fit comfortably in one quart-sized, clear, resealable plastic bag. This rule is part of TSA’s effort to manage liquid-based security risks effectively. It’s crucial to remember this when packing liquid vitamins, as failing to comply can lead to delays and possibly having to part with your supplements at the checkpoint.

Planning Ahead

The key to a smooth experience with vitamins and air travel is planning. Before your trip, take a few moments to organize your vitamins. If they’re in pill form, consider a pill organizer or clearly labeled containers.

For liquid vitamins, ensure they’re in appropriately sized containers and packed according to the 3-1-1 rule . By being prepared, you not only make your journey through airport security smoother but also ensure you have your essential health supplements at hand for a healthier travel experience.

Expert Insight

Dr. Michael Zimring , a seasoned travel health expert, emphasizes the importance of having vitamins on hand, especially for long flights or journeys across time zones. Keeping them in your carry-on is a smart way to maintain your health routine.

Making Healthy Travel a Breeze

Why Vitamins Matter on Your Journey ? Travel can disrupt your regular health routine. Keeping vitamins close ensures you don’t miss a beat. It’s not just about following TSA rules; it’s about maintaining your well-being while on the go.

The Right Way to Pack Vitamins ? Here’s a pro tip: Organize your vitamins in clear, labeled containers. This not only makes it easier at security checks but also helps you stay on top of your health regime.

Avoiding the Hold-Up: A How-To Guide

Packing vitamins for air travel doesn’t have to be a complicated process. With a bit of knowledge about TSA regulations and some strategic planning, you can ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience at airport security checkpoints. Here’s how to make it work:

  • Understand the Regulations : Familiarize yourself with the TSA’s guidelines on traveling with vitamins and supplements. Knowing these rules can save you from unnecessary delays or the inconvenience of having to leave your vitamins behind.
  • Sort and Simplify : If your vitamins are in pill form, sort them beforehand. You might not need to bring the entire bottle for a short trip. A weekly pill organizer can be a great way to carry only what you need and keep your luggage light.
  • Label Clearly : For any vitamins that aren’t in their original packaging, consider labeling them. This not only helps you identify them easily but also assists TSA agents in quickly understanding what’s in your carry-on, speeding up the security process.
  • Liquid Vitamins : If your supplements are in liquid form, ensure they adhere to the TSA’s 3-1-1 liquids rule. Transfer them into travel-sized containers if necessary, and keep them accessible in your carry-on for easy screening.
  • Check for Exceptions : If you have vitamins or supplements that require special handling or are larger than the standard size allowed, check with the airline ahead of time. Some exceptions can be made for medical necessities.

A Personal Touch: Insider Tips

From my extensive travel experiences, I’ve gathered some personal tips that can transform your travel experience with vitamins:

  • Pill Organizer Perks : A compact pill organizer is not just about convenience; it serves as a daily reminder to take care of your health, especially when you’re out of your regular routine. It’s particularly useful on long-haul flights or when hopping across different time zones.
  • Digital Reminders : Set alarms on your phone or smartwatch to remind you to take your vitamins. This can be especially handy if you’re dealing with jet lag or a packed travel itinerary.
  • Hydration Is Key : Always pair your vitamins with adequate water intake. Air travel can be dehydrating, and staying hydrated is crucial for your overall health and the effectiveness of your supplements.
  • Quick Access : Store your pill organizer or vitamin containers in an easily accessible part of your carry-on. This way, you can reach them without hassle during the flight or at the airport.
  • Stay Informed : Keep an eye on any changes in TSA regulations or airline policies regarding carry-ons. Staying updated can help you avoid any last-minute surprises at the airport.

Incorporating these strategies into your travel plans can greatly enhance your experience. Not only do they help in avoiding delays at security, but they also ensure that your health and wellness remain a top priority throughout your journey.

The Bottom Line -Conclusion

Traveling with vitamins doesn’t have to be a source of stress or confusion. By understanding and adhering to TSA regulations, particularly the 3-1-1 liquids rule for liquid supplements, you can pass through airport security with ease.

Packing your vitamins in an organized manner, using pill organizers for solid forms, and ensuring liquid vitamins are in compliant containers are simple yet effective steps to ensure a smooth travel experience. Beyond just meeting security requirements, these practices reflect a commitment to maintaining your health and wellness while on the move.

Remember, successful travel is as much about preparation as it is about the journey itself. By keeping your vitamins accessible and well-organized, you’re not just complying with regulations; you’re prioritizing your health, ensuring that you remain at your best throughout your travels.

So, pack smart, stay informed, and keep those vitamins close – your body and mind will thank you as you explore the world.

Quick health scoop:.

  • Traveling can be fun and exciting. Try to maintain some of your regular health habits, like your vitamin routine, to help support your overall wellness and enjoyment of your trip.
  • Support your stress management, immune health, and digestive health while traveling with supplements like Ashwagandha, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Magnesium, and Probiotics, respectively.†
  • Pack your supplements smartly by keeping them secure in your carry-on luggage, avoiding liquids, and instead choosing forms that are less likely to be affected by environmental changes.

Are you planning a trip to the beach or the city? Catching an international flight or heading for a mountain getaway? Just because you’re taking a hiatus doesn’t mean your everyday health routine has to. In addition to maintaining your diet, exercise, and sleep habits as much as possible, it’s beneficial to continue your normal supplement regimen while traveling .

Let’s consider why traveling with your vitamins and supplements should be a key part of your packing plan, plus which ones we recommend make the cut and how to pack vitamins for travel. By the way, can you bring vitamins on a plane?

The Importance of Traveling With Vitamins

Traveling is a favorite pastime for good reason. But when planning your itinerary of activities and adventures, make time to continue some version of your normal health routine. In order to get the most out of your experience, it’s important to take care of yourself. If you’re used to taking vitamins and supplements at home, this is a simple practice to continue as you travel.

Furthermore, vitamins and supplements can help bridge any potential nutrient gaps you may experience during travel, as you might be eating differently than normal. Traveling can also interrupt your sleep pattern, especially if you’re adjusting to another time zone . Maintaining your supplementation routine may help support your wellness . If you’re asking yourself, what vitamins should I take every day , we’ve got you covered with 11 vitamins, minerals, and supplements to maintain your health.

5 Supplements and Vitamins that are Essential to Take While Traveling

In addition to your favorite daily multivitamin, the below supplements would be helpful to support your wellness while traveling.

1. Ashwagandha

Along with all the joys of travel can also come new stresses on your body. Ashwagandha is a traditional herb long used for its adaptogenic properties to help adapt to stressors. Additionally, Ashwagandha reduces feelings of stress and occasional anxiousness.[1] Try Nature Made® Ashwagandha Capsules , formulated with clinically studied SENSORIL® Ashwagandha to reduce stress.†

2. Probiotics

One of the most common complaints associated with traveling is a change in bowel habits. This is because your gut microbiome, home to trillions of organisms, can be sensitive to changes in routine, diet, sleep, and more.[2] Probiotics can help support gastrointestinal health. Digestive Probiotics Advanced Dual Action Capsules help support healthy gut flora in the small intestine to relieve occasional gas, bloating, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort, and in the large intestine to help relieve occasional constipation and irregularity. †

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps support the immune system.[3] A Vitamin C supplement like 1000 mg Chewable Tablets can be a beneficial travel companion as it’s an easy way to keep up your immune health routine.†

4. Vitamin D

Taking a Vitamin D supplement can be beneficial as part of your regular health routine, particularly when you’re traveling, as Vitamin D is essential to support a healthy immune response.[4] Since most Americans do not get enough Vitamin D in their daily diet (95%) you don’t want to miss out on this important nutrient.[5] Consider Nature Made® Vitamin D3 2000 IU   softgels as a daily supplement.†

5. Magnesium

Another great supplement  during travel is Magnesium, as it supports muscle relaxation and helps relax the body.[6]  Nature Made® High Absorption Magnesium Glycinate provides 200 mg of Magnesium per serving.†

Can You Bring Vitamins on a Plane?

Regular flyers are well-versed in TSA rules for what can and cannot come on board a plane. But are vitamins and other supplements allowed, and if so, how should you pack them?

The TSA website clearly states that yes, packing vitamins is allowed in both your carry-on bag and checked baggage.[7] As long as they are in solid form, such as capsules, tablets, or gummies, you are permitted to pack as many supplements as you like, and they don’t have to be labeled.

If your vitamins and supplements are in liquid form, however, these will fall under the 3.4-ounce size requirement for liquids if you’re packing them in your carry-on. Liquids have to be packed in a one-quart-sized resealable clear bag that will go through security screening.[8]

So, can you bring vitamins on a plane? Yes. The final decision about anything in your bag will rest in the hands of the TSA officer at the security checkpoint, but it is unlikely that supplements packed in alignment with the requirements above will be turned away.

How to Pack Vitamins for Travel

Now that you know that bringing vitamins is allowed , you’re probably strategizing how to pack them well for travel. After all, living out of a suitcase is hard enough without random supplements either spilling out all over your stuff or bottles taking up too much space.

Here are some tips for how to pack vitamins for travel:.

Avoid Liquids

Not only is the TSA not going to allow you to pack liquid vitamins in your carry-on bag, but they can be inconvenient while traveling. Liquid vitamins have to be measured into single serving sizes. This can be a pain to manage when you’re not in the comfort of your own home. Plus, liquids can expand and contract during travel and potentially spill on other items.

Keep Them Safely Secured

Things can shift in your suitcase during travel. To prevent your supplements from spilling or getting mixed up with other items, be sure to secure them. For instance, place them in a resealable bag together. If you’re traveling for a week or less, divide them into a 7-day pill box that has AM and PM slots.

Pack Them in Your Carry-On Bag

Your carry-on is the best place for your most important items when traveling. While it’s not inevitable, bags that are checked at the airport do sometimes get lost or temporarily misplaced on their way to your destination. Keep your bag of vitamins in your carry-on to prevent any potential disruption in your health routine.

Choose Capsules, Tablets, or Softgels

Keep in mind that liquids might be inconvenient, and gummies might melt and stick together with fluctuations in temperature. Instead, opt for capsules, tablets, or hard softgels that are less likely to be affected by changes in the environment as you travel.

vitamins and traveling and you

Traveling can be a great way to explore new places, try new foods, and experience different cultures. However, it can also disrupt our daily routines and make it difficult to stick to our usual health and wellness regimens. One way to help maintain your health while on the go is to bring along your favorite supplements. Here are some tips for packing vitamins for travel.

Choosing the right supplement and vitamins

First, consider what supplements you want to bring with you. If you take a lot of different supplements, it might not be practical to bring them all. Focus on the ones that are most important for you to take while traveling. For example, if you have trouble sleeping in new places, you might want to bring melatonin. If you're going to be eating a lot of unfamiliar foods, you might want to bring digestive enzymes or probiotics.

Packing tape and TSA

Travel tips and more, question: can i bring my supplements onto the plane.

Yes, you can! According to the U.S. Customs & Border Protection:

“Non-prescription medicines (also known as over-the-counter or OTC medicines), vitamins, herbs, and supplement products fall under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."

In general, the FDA will not object to the personal importation of those products, as long as: – The traveler is carrying the products in their possession (or in their luggage); – The amount being carried is an amount reasonably considered for personal use.

For additional information please consult the FDA Consumer Alert webpage via the following link: FDA.gov, or call 1-888-723-3366.”

Benefits of Traveling With Supplements

supplements in overnight bag

In general, travelling can take a toll on your physical and emotional health. Jet lag , exposure to germs (and sick people!) in enclosed spaces, less nutritious meals, and overall stress can all weaken your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to falling ill during your travels.

Here are a few reasons why it’s a good idea to bring supplements with you while travelling:

Energy Boost

Travelling is tiring! To help keep your energy levels up and counter weariness, bring along some B-Complex vitamins. If you’re having trouble sleeping, bring along a natural sleeping aid like LUNA  to help you rest better while on the go.

Pain Relief

Long periods of inactivity during flights can cause you to end up with sore muscles and body aches once you land. Also, if you have a particularly active holiday planned with lots of walking, you’re bound to need some pain relief – so pack some supplements like Turmeric and Magnesium to help with those aches and pains!

Digestive Help

Many people experience digestive issues on a regular basis when travelling, thanks to jet lag and/or not being used to the local cuisine. You’ll want to bring along some digestive enzymes and probiotics to help improve your digestion, as well as to combat bloating, constipation, gas and general sluggishness.

Packing Your Supplements

daily supplement container

Consider getting a 7-day travel pill boxes so you can organize your supplements by day – and so you don’t forget what to take and how many.

You're allowed to pack your vitamins/supplements in your checked luggage, but it’s highly recommended that you bring them with you in your carry-on – because you never know if your checked bags might be delayed or go missing.

Vitamins/supplements come in different forms, so consider the most convenient way to bring them along:

Some people pack their pills/capsules in baggies or small Tupperware containers, which is fine. However, if you’d prefer to organize your pills (so you don’t forget what to take and how many), consider getting one of those 7-day travel pill boxes so you can organize your supplements by day. For longer trips, there are 2-week travel pill boxes available as well – or just double-up!

Measure out the amount that you need into separate plastic bags for convenience. Try not to pack bottles or jars, as these tend to take up a lot of space and can be pretty heavy.

Liquid medications aren’t subject to the TSA’s (Transportation Security Administration) 3.4 ounce restriction. However, take note that you will need to declare amounts over 3.4 ounces to the TSA officers when you go through customs – so be prepared to do so.

Traveling can take a lot out of you – but with some careful planning there’s no reason you can’t keep your trusty supplements by your side wherever your journey takes you.

You’re free to bring any amount of vitamins/supplements with you, as long as it’s considered a reasonable amount for your personal use. A good rule of thumb: Bring no more than a 90-day supply when you travel.

If you’re planning on staying somewhere for longer than 90 days, you can arrange to have additional vitamins/supplements sent to you via courier or mail. Alternatively, you can order online and have more shipped to your location.

Screening options

When you reach the security checkpoint, you may need to remove your supplements from your bag so they can be screened separately. Make sure that your baggies and pill boxes are clearly labelled and well-sealed.

Although the TSA doesn’t require it, it may be helpful to bring along a doctor’s letter that explains the uses of your vitamins and supplements. Keep it on hand, and be prepared to answer any questions the security officers may have.

So, where to next?

Traveling with supplements can seem tricky – but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Focus on bringing only what you need and travel light. If you are at all uncertain, check the FDA and TSA websites, or look up the local/international laws where you’ll be going.

Remember, preparation is the key to avoiding potential trouble – so do your research and plan accordingly. Follow our tips and guidelines, so you won’t have to leave your supplements behind while you’re on holiday!

Can you pack your meds in a pill case and more questions answered

One of the more popular questions we get from travelers is: “Can I travel with my medication?” The answer is yes, with some qualifiers. Here are a few tips that you might find helpful.

Pills

  • Medication in liquid form is allowed in carry-on bags in excess of 3.4 ounces in reasonable quantities for the flight. It is not necessary to place medically required liquids in a zip-top bag. However, you must tell the officer that you have medically necessary liquids at the start of the screening checkpoint process. Medically required liquids will be subject to additional screening that could include being asked to open the container.
  • You can bring your medication in pill or solid form in unlimited amounts as long as it is screened.
  • You can travel with your medication in both carry-on and checked baggage. It’s highly recommended you place these items in your carry-on in the event that you need immediate access.
  • TSA does not require passengers to have medications in prescription bottles, but states have individual laws regarding the labeling of prescription medication with which passengers need to comply.
  • Medication is usually screened by X-ray; however, if a passenger does not want a medication X-rayed, he or she may ask for a visual inspection instead. This request must be made before any items are sent through the X-ray tunnel.
  • Nitroglycerin tablets and spray (used to treat episodes of angina in people who have coronary artery disease) are permitted and have never been prohibited.

United Airlines bag policy: What you can carry on and how much it costs to check luggage

travel carry vitamins

Following the lead of American Airlines , United Airlines has raised the cost of checking bags.

Under the updated United Airlines baggage policy , the cost to check a bag is now $40 for the first bag ($35 if paid online at least 24 hours before the flight) and $50 for the second bag ($45 if prepaid online) for flights within the U.S.

United's checked bag fees were previously $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second.

The cost of checking bags for international travel depends on the destination. For example, it also costs $40 for the first bag and $50 for the second bag for travel to and from Canada and Mexico.

Here's what to know about United Airlines' baggage policy.

How much does United charge for checked bags?

For domestic travel, United Airlines charges $40 for the first checked bag and $50 for the second checked bag. The fees are $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second bag if you pay online at least 24 hours before your flight.

The fees are the same for international destinations in the Americas such as Canada and Mexico, as well as the Caribbean. However, The Arizona Republic found there was no discount to prepay for checked bags for flights to and from Canada when we used United's Bag Fee Calculator to price the cost of checking luggage for Phoenix-Toronto and Phoenix-Calgary itineraries.

Does United Economy include a checked bag?

United Economy fares do not include a checked bag.

Can I bring a carry-on with United Economy?

United's Economy and Economy Plus fares include one free carry-on that can go in the overhead bin plus a personal item. United Basic Economy fares permit one personal item that fits under the seat. Carry-on sized bags must be checked.

Are prepaid baggage fees refundable on United?

Passengers may be able to get refunds for checked luggage if they prepay for more bags than they check, or if their flight is cancelled, according to United.

How can I get a free checked bag on United Airlines?

Certain fare classes and loyalty program tiers include free checked bags on United.

Members of United's MileagePlus rewards program who have MileagePlus Premier status can check at least one bag for free, and the number of free bags depends on their tier. To reach the minimum Premier level, Premier Silver (one free checked bag), passengers must either take 12 qualifying flights and earn 4,000 qualifying points or earn 5,000 qualifying points in a calendar year.

United Explorer Card credit card holders, plus a companion, get one free checked bag when they purchase their plane tickets with that card. The credit card has an introductory annual fee of $0, which increases to $95 annually after the first year.

Active U.S. military members with ID and their dependents can check up to two bags free for personal travel and up to five bags free when traveling on military orders, according to United.

What is United Airlines' baggage allowance?

The baggage weight allowance on United depends on a passenger's fare class and MileagePlus status. For economy and premium economy passengers, checked bags must weigh 50 pounds or less. Fees for overweight bags start at $200.

First class passengers, business class passengers and MileagePlus Premier members can check bags that weigh up to 70 pounds.

Assistive devices such as wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, canes and crutches are free to check regardless of size and weight.

How many bags does United Airlines allow for free?

United Airlines passengers may board with one carry-on bag and one personal item for free.

What is the carry-on size restriction for United?

Carry-on bags can measure no more than 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high, including handles and wheels.

What is the personal item size restriction for United?

The size limit for personal items, which include purses, small handbags, backpacks and laptop bags, is 17 inches long, 10 inches wide and 9 inches high.

Does United allow a backpack and carry-on?

If you have a carry-on bag, you can also bring a backpack as long as it meets the size limit for a personal item, which is 17 inches long, 10 inches wide and 9 inches high. Passengers may not bring two carry-on size bags.

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags?

No weight limits for carry-on bags are noted in United's carry-on bag policies. Carry-on bags and personal items within the size limits can fly regardless of weight as long as the carry-on can fit in the overhead bin and the personal item can fit under the seat.

5 loaded guns have been found in carry-on luggage at Idaho Falls airport this year. Doing this could result in a $15,000 fine

gun at airport

The following is a joint release from the city of Idaho Falls and the Transportation Security Administration.

IDAHO FALLS – The Idaho Falls Regional Airport and Transportation Security Administration want to remind passengers that firearms should not travel in carry-on baggage.

So far this year, TSA officers have found five firearms – all of them loaded – during the routine X-ray screening of carry-on luggage at IDA’s security checkpoint. This compares to three firearm discoveries by TSA officers at IDA in all of 2023.

The most recent firearm discovery occurred Tuesday, March 26 around 11:20 a.m. at IDA. TSA officers detected a Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard handgun in the carry-on bag of a female traveler ticketed for travel to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

All travelers must understand that firearms are strictly prohibited in carry-on luggage. Failure to comply with this regulation can result in severe consequences, including legal action and potential arrest.

“As the busy travel season approaches, Idaho Falls Regional Airport anticipates a significant surge in passenger traffic,” said Idaho Falls Regional Airport Director Ian Turner. “Each traveler’s priority is reaching their destination safely and promptly. However, amidst the excitement of travel, it’s crucial to remember to check your luggage before heading to the airport.”

When a TSA officer sees the image of a firearm on the X-ray screen, TSA immediately notifies the local airport law enforcement agency, which responds to the security checkpoint. A law enforcement officer removes the firearm from the X-ray tunnel and removes the traveler from the security checkpoint. What happens to the firearm and the traveler is up to the discretion of the airport law enforcement agency.

TSA can impose a fine of up to nearly $15,000 for violations, and attempting to pass through a checkpoint with a firearm can incur hefty penalties and disrupt or entirely spoil travel plans.

“Any traveler who brings a firearm in carry-on luggage to the checkpoint will find out very quickly that this is an expensive and inconvenient mistake. Not only will the traveler be delayed as they speak with a law enforcement officer, but TSA will levy a heft civil penalty against the Loaded firearm discovered by TSA officers at traveler for their actions,” said TSA Federal Security Director for Idaho Andy Coose. “Travelers who bring a firearm to the checkpoint will not be eligible for TSA PreCheck® screening and, furthermore, they will receive enhanced screening to ensure that they don’t further pose a security threat. There is no upside to bringing a firearm in carry-on luggage to the airport.”

Among the factors TSA considers when determining the civil penalty amount include whether the firearm was loaded and whether there was accessible ammunition. Even if a traveler has a concealed weapons permit, firearms are not permitted in carry-on luggage.

Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage only if they are unloaded and packed in a hard-sided, locked case. The locked case should be placed in a checked bag and declared to the airline at the ticket counter. TSA has details on how to properly travel with a firearm posted on its website .

In 2023, TSA officers discovered 6,737 firearms in carry-on luggage at 262 different airports including four airports in Idaho. In addition to IDA, those airports where firearms were detected were Boise Airport; Friedman Memorial Airport and Pocatello Regional Airport.

This Spacious Samsonite Carry-on Is My Secret to Getting 3 Weeks of Clothes in 1 Bag — and It's on Sale

It’s the reason I never have to check a bag.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

As a frequent traveler, there are two questions I constantly receive: What’s your favorite destination? How do you only travel with a carry-on? The answer to the first changes frequently depending on where I’ve just returned from or perhaps on a day that I’m particularly nostalgic for a certain city, but the latter — that never changes.

I’ve been traveling with Samsonite’s Freeform Carry-On for four years now, and it’s absolutely become my go-to carry-on suitcase for trips over a week. In fact, I’ve used it for a three-week trip across Asia and a two-week trip in Italy (I had to check it on the way home due to obtaining a few bottles of wine and EVOO) and even traveled to the end of the world with it full of all the necessities for an Antarctica trip . P.S. It also happens to be marked down in Amazon’s Big Spring Sale — making now the perfect time to snag your own.

Samsonite Freeform Hardside Carry-on Luggage

Though the hardside suitcase’s exterior dimensions (21 inches by 15 inches by 10 inches) conform to the carry-on allowances of most major airlines — thus it may look similar to other hardcovers from the outside — there is an unbelievable amount of space on the inside (20 inches by 14.5 inches by 10 inches). As the old saying goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Every time I open the Freeform to pack for a longer trip, I get excited about how I’m going to arrange everything as it always fits perfectly. The two sides of the suitcase are divided by a lightweight zippered partition that houses a half-zippered pocket for thin items like undergarments and accessories. I appreciate that the two spaces are separate so I can keep my clothing neatly packed on one side versus my shoes and toiletries on the other — it not only maintains organization but also cleanliness.

Another way I keep things organized is with packing cubes. I tend to use medium and large Veken packing cubes on the unzippered side of the suitcase for my clothing. Usually, the large cube holds all my daytime outfits while the medium cube is reserved for my nighttime ensembles. They fit so perfectly together on one side of this particular suitcase that there’s usually even room under them for a pair of flats, sandals, or accessories like belts, flat hats, or a workout resistance band that I like to travel with. Being able to tuck these small items out of sight and under the cubes allows me to fully take advantage of every inch of the suitcase.

The zippered side of Samsonite’s Freeform Carry-On that fits my shoes and toiletries is usually a bit roomier as I like to leave a little space for last-minute additions and space for dirty laundry while on the road (again, the zipper is convenient for separating the clean from the dirty outfits).

When it comes time to close the suitcase, one of my biggest tricks is to never open the one-inch expansion until the return trip. This ensures there’s always room for some destination-specific shopping or in case I’m not as meticulous when re-packing my bag for the journey home. It’s also lightweight at only 6.5 pounds so even when I add new items and open the extension, I know I’ll still be within my weight limit.

Aesthetically, I love the black style as it shows less dirt and scuff marks; it goes with everything, including the ever-rotating color of my personal item. But there are also unique shades like purple on sale that you won’t get mixed up with another traveler’s bag. Plus, the double, 360-degree spinning wheels make it easy to roll through airports as well as city sidewalks.

So that’s it — that’s how I only travel with carry-on thanks to Samsonite’s Freeform Carry-On making it so seamless. But it’s far from the only spacious carry-on model from the popular brand. If you’re feeling inspired to be a carry-on-only traveler, read on for more spacious Samsonite luggage you won’t have to check, all at low prices thanks to the Amazon Big Spring Sale.

American Airlines revises its policy for bringing pets and bags on flights

March 29, 2024 / 7:11 PM EDT / CBS/AP

American Airlines is relaxing part of its pet policy to let owners bring their animal companion and a full-size carry-on bag into the cabin.

Until this week, people who carried a pet into the cabin, which involves paying a $150 fee, could only have one other small item that fit under the seat. Anything bigger, like a carry-on bag with wheels, needed to be checked for a $35 fee. Or they could put the pet in the cargo hold.

Now American is letting passengers bring a pet in the cabin and also bring either a regular carry-on bag or a personal item — just not both bags. The old policy struck some pet owners as unfair, since they were already paying a pet fee. Passengers must still pay a fee, but their pet no longer counts as a carry-on.

An American spokeswoman confirmed that the rules change took effect Thursday. She couldn't explain the reason because the airline's corporate offices were closed for Good Friday, and decision-makers were not available.

Gary Leff, a travel blogger who first wrote about the change, recalled traveling years ago with a Yorkshire terrier.

"It was always frustrating that the dog counted as the carry-on even though I was paying the extra (pet) fee that was sometimes more than the ticket for me," he said Friday.

Leff said he thinks American Airlines' new policy will reduce the urge for travelers to falsely claim that their pet is a service animal that flies for free, enabling them to bring a carry-on as well.

Even with the new policy, however, traveling with a pet takes a lot of planning and research ahead of time, and many factors could prohibit Fido or Felix from being allowed into the cabin. For one thing, there is a maximum total number of pets allowed per cabin, which varies depending on the type of aircraft.

On United, the total maximum of four pets is allowed in Economy class on the Airbus 319, while Economy on the Airbus 319 allows a total maximum of six pets. In all instances, individual passengers are allowed to bring a maximum of pets in one single carrier.

Other U.S. airlines that allow pets on board include Delta, American, Southwest, Alaska and Frontier. On most, pet carriers count as carry-ons, according to the American Kennel Club.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Live Updates: Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship hits it; construction crew missing

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.
