The Movistar Team heads into the 2023 men’s UAE Tour with its focus set on the sprinting chances of Fernando Gaviria, while also keeping other scenarios in mind. We can’t forget Carlos Verona achieved a valuable sixth spot overall with tenacity and class over the key mountain stages.

The two uphill finishes from that year are back in 2023: the long, steady Jebel Jais (Wednesday 22nd) , the highest peak in the country; and the more demanding, while always on wide roads, Jebel Hafeet (Sunday 26th) .

Between those, there will be really dangerous stages in the crosswinds -especially the opening one to Al Mirfa (Monday 20th)- and a 17 km TTT, the first one of the season, at the Khalifa Port (Tuesday 21st). Stages four -Dubai; Thursday 23rd-, five -Umm al Quwain; Friday 24th- and six -Abu Dhabi; Saturday 25th- are clearer ‘volata’ opportunities.

UAE Tour 2023: The Route

UAE Tour 2023

Stage 1 is played out on a flat route. The race starts near Al Dhafra Castle and finishes in Al Mirfa. The route is similar to the opener of two years ago, when Van der Poel took the spoils after a race with full on echelon action.

The 2nd stage is a 17.1 kilometres team time trial with start and finish in Khalifa Port. Flat and straight roads with a U-turn about halfway.

The first of two mountain top finishes happens on Wednesday. Stage 3 finishes on Jebel Jais, a climb of 21.1 kilometres long with an average gradient of 5.4%.

The 4th stage sets off from Al Shindagha, a neigbourhood in the city of Dubai. The route only leaves the metropolitan area for an outing to the Al Qudra Cycle Track before a finish in Dubai Harbour.

Stage 5 is likely to see another sprint finish. The race goes from Al Marjan Island to Umm-Al-Quwain, an unprecedented finishing venue.

The last chance for the fast men appears on stage 6 . The race goes to the well-known finish at Abu Dhabi Breakwater. Cavendish, Ewan and Gaviria – they all won here in the UAE Tour.

The 7th stage will be the decisive final test. The finale takes place on Jebel Hafeet, a 10.8 kilometres ascent at 6.6%. The section at the heart of the climb is where the GC action is likely to take place, as this rises at 8% to 9% for almost 4 kilometres. Pogacar emerged victorious on Jebel Hafeet on the last three occasions.

Dove seguire lo UAE Tour 2023 in TV e streaming? Diretta su Eurosport e Rai: scopri gli orari completi giorno per giorno della diretta

uae tour 2023 in tv

UAE Tour 2023 in TV e Streaming

Routes unveiled for the fifth edition of The UAE Tour in 2023

uae tour 2023 in tv

Two summit finishes (Jebel Hafeet and Jebel Jais), four sprint stages and a team time trial form the route of the UAE Tour’s fifth edition, starting on 20 February.

Riders will compete for the race’s Red, Green, White and Black jerseys – sponsored by International Holding Company, Nakheel and Experience Abu Dhabi respectively.

The official jersey will be provided by Alé

2022 edition was won by Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar

United Arab Emirates, 18 January 2023 – The official route, jerseys and sponsors for the fifth edition of the UAE Tour have been announced. The UAE Tour race organisers, Abu Dhabi Sports Council are pleased to confirm that this year’s edition of the race, starting and finishing in Abu Dhabi, will feature four sprinters’ stages, two mountain stages best suited to the peloton’s climbers and a 17.2 km long, high-speed team time trial.

This year, the UAE Tour will feature over 1028 km of racing across the seven stages. From 20 to 26 February, riders will cross the diverse range of landscapes within the region, the race will feature a significant elevation gain of 3500m, almost all of which is concentrated in Stages 3 and 7. Two summit finishes feature in the 2023 UAE Tour, one at Jebel Jais, where previous stage winners include Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, both of whom have previously earned the coveted Tour de France yellow jersey, and Jebel Hafeet, an epic climb that has seen three stage victories for Pogacar in the last three editions of the tour.

Now in its fifth edition, this year’s tour follows the inaugural UAE Tour Women, the first-ever female WorldTour race in the Middle East. The newest addition to the WorldTour calendar marks an important step in the region’s development of the sport and showcases its commitment to the growth of cycling.

Full stage descriptions and sponsors for the 2023 UAE Tour are listed below.

Stage 1: Al Dhafra Castle – Al Mirfa (151 KM) The stage of the desert. Starting from Al Dhafra Castle in the desert, the route reaches Madinat Zayed along wide and straight roads. After the city it crosses the desert again for over 60 km, heading toward the coast pointing directly towards Al Mirfa. Here is where the route enters the final circuit of about 18 km, to be repeated once.

Last kms The final circuit is on a wide well-paved road and features some turnarounds on large roundabouts and a short climb immediately after the passages on the finish line. The finish line is on asphalt 8m wide.

Stage 2: Khalifa Port – Khalifa Port TTT (17.2 KM) Stage 2 is a Team Time Trial that takes place entirely inside Khalifa Port. The route is very fast and is characterized only by a few right angle bends and two U-turns. The road is perfectly flat, wide and with wide-ranging turns, which will allow riders to hold very high speeds (wind permitting).

Last kms Wide curves, wide road, excellent pavement. The finish line is on asphalt

Stage 3: Umbrella Beach Al Fujairah – Jebel Jais (185 KM) The first of two mountain stages of the UAE Tour. The stage is divided into two distinct parts. The first approaches the final mountain undulating through the desert, while the last is characterized by approximately 20 km of continuous climbing up to the finish. Departing from Fujairah and crossing the desert areas on the edge of the Hajar mountains, it then heads towards Ras-al-Khaimah, whose capital is not crossed by the ride. The stage then heads directly towards Jais Mountain. The final climb of approximately 20 km at constant 5% gradient, with slightly higher gradients around 7% in the last 2 km.

Last kms The final climb winds through hairpin bends on a very wide roadway. Gradients are mainly around 4-5% in the first part and 5-7% in the second, with a peak of 9% around 2 km from the finish. The finish is on straight asphalt roads.

Stage 4: Al Shindagha – Dubai Harbour (174 KM) A stage in Dubai. Departing from Shindagha, the first part of the stage is on the edge of the city before entering the desert and touching on classic stopover locations such as Al Qudra Cycle track and Expo City Dubai. It then arrives at the Palm Jumeirah, on Crescent Rd, before returning to the base of the Palm and Dubai Harbour. The entire route winds along very wide, and substantially straight, roads interspersed with roundabouts that have a very large radius and are well paved.

Last kms The ending is on a wide avenue, with the arrival to the finish line on asphalt.

Stage 5: Al Marjan Island – Umm al Quwain (182 KM) Departing from Marjan Island to reach Ras al Khaimah, the stage heads through the desert southwards with some deviations from the motorway. Here it covers several stretches of motorway until reaching Umm al Quwain for the final sprint. The entire route takes place on wide, straight and well-paved roads through the desert.

Last kms The final km is on a wide avenue that is slightly curved. The arrival to the finish line is on asphalt.

Stage 6: Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi – Abu Dhabi Breakwater (166 KM) Stage around the city of Abu Dhabi. Departing from Warner Bros Island in Yas Island, the first part of the stage heads north. Continuing towards Khalifa Port it then returns south and heads back to the town through Khalifa City. Returning to Abu Dhabi via the highway and via Maqta Bridge, brushing past the Grand Mosque until reaching Al Khaleej Al Arabi St. Here the substantially straight road, lasting 15 km, leads to the Abu Dhabi Breakwater for a sprint finish.

Last kms The last 5 km are on a wide road with large semi-curves that lead to the finish line on asphalt.

Stage 7: Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium – Jebel Hafeet (153 KM) The classic mountain stage of the UAE Tour. In the first part, the traditional long ride in the desert north of the city is covered. The route then winds through Al Ain, where many symbolic landmarks are touched (Al Ain Zoo, Al Qattara, Al Hili) until it returns to Green Mubazzarah. Here the final climb of Jebel Hafeet begins, which with its 10 km section will be the final judge of the race.

Last kms The final climb winds through wide-ranging hairpin bends on a 3-lane roadway. Gradients are mainly around 8-9% with a peak of 11%, 3 km from the finish. There is a very short descent in the last km, before the last ramp. The finish line is on straight asphalt.

Tour de France 2023 route, teams and how to watch on TV

The Tour de France looks set to be a battle between defending champion Jonas Vingegaard and two-time winner Tadej Pogacar.

Pogacar was enjoying a sterling season , winning Paris-Nice and the Tour of Flanders, before breaking his wrist two months ago, leaving the 2020 and 2021 Tour winner fighting to make a full recovery before the grand départ in Bilbao on Saturday.

Pogacar’s team (UAE Team Emirates) has been reinforced with the recruitment of Britain’s Adam Yates and Felix Grossschartner – two major additions for the mountain stages.

If the 24-year-old is back to his best then the stage is set for a potentially vintage battle with Vingegaard.

The Dane, who will again be able to rely on the formidable Jumbo-Visma team, won the Critérium du Dauphiné and will start as the big favourite. He and his team made Pogacar crack last year in the ‘stage of the century’ a year after Vingegaard took second place behind the Slovenian.

Pogacar returned to competitive racing in his national championships earlier this month, winning both the time trial and road race titles, but the Tour is a different affair altogether.

He is expected to throw everything at Vingegaard as he did last year, when he attacked on all terrains, earning the support of the French crowds. More news.

What is the Tour de France?

The Tour de France is one of the three grand tours – the others being the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España – that form the backbone around which the cycling season is structured.

This is the biggest and most important bike race in the world, with an estimated 80 per cent of most WorldTour team’s sponsorship income being based around the Tour.

Founded in 1903 by Henri Desgrange, editor of L’Auto newspaper, the Tour may not be the favourite stage race of the cycling cognoscenti but it is one that captures the imagination of the wider sporting public. As a result, the race is the biggest annual sporting event in the world with more live spectators than even the Olympics or football World Cup.

When does the Tour de France start?

This 110th edition of the Tour de France starts with a 182km hilly stage starting and finishing in Bilbao on Saturday July 1, 2023. It is the second time The grand départ has taken place in the Basque Country before after previously starting in the autonomous region in 1992.

How long is this year’s Tour de France?

The second grand tour of the season comprises 21 stages and will be contested over 3,404 kilometres (2,115 miles). This year’s Tour consists of eight flat stages, four hilly stages, eight mountain stages with four summit finishes, one individual time trial and two rest days.

And when does the Tour de France finish?

The Tour de France concludes with its traditional final stage in Paris, on Sunday July 23. The race will again end on the famous cobbled Champs-Élysées boulevard following a 115.5km stage from Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

Where does each stage start and end?

Latest news

Egan Bernal, the 2019 Tour de France champion, has been named in Ineos Grenadiers’ eight-man team for this year’s race which begins in Bilbao on Saturday. It will be the Colombian’s first grand tour since his life-threatening crash in January 2022.

Britain’s Tom Pidcock will also be making a return to the Tour, 12 months on from his famous victory atop Alpe d’Huez in the Queen stage of last year’s race.

Bernal, 26, crashed into the back of a bus while training in Colombia at the start of last year, sustaining horrific injuries including 11 broken ribs, a broken femur, kneecap, T5 and T6 vertebrae, C2 vertebrae, a metacarpal, and one broken thumb.

Following a low-key return to action last August, Bernal’s preparation this season has included outings at WorldTour races Volta a Catalunya, Itzulia Basque Country, Tour de Romandie and Critérium du Dauphiné.

Bernal finished 12th at the most recent of those, the Critérium du Dauphiné, nearly seven minutes down on last year’s Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). He is not expected to challenge Vingegaard or two-time Tour winner Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), the two overwhelming favourites for this year’s yellow jersey.

Tom Pidcock and Ben Turner will be flying the Union flag in the only British squad at the Tour, while Ineos Grenadiers has also included the hugely experienced Jonathan Castroviejo, Omar Fraile and Michal Kwiatkowski in its team.

Daniel Martínez may be the man to lead any slim hope the team has of competing for the general classification, while young Spaniard Carlos Rodríguez completes the eight-man line-up.

“I’m really excited to be back at the Tour de France for what promises to be another beautiful three weeks,” said Pidcock who won the Alpe d’Huez stage on his Tour debut last year.

“To win an iconic stage and wear the white jersey in 2022 are lifelong memories, and this year I want to build on that as I continue to progress my career. We’ve got an exciting group of riders and we’ll be looking to race with intent and be tactically smart, as we execute the plans we’ve developed as a team.

“As I experienced for the first time last year, the Tour is the toughest race of all, but it’s also the most beautiful and historic – which is what makes it so iconic. The opportunity to tackle it again alongside my teammates and some of the best riders in the world, in front of so many passionate fans, is one that I relish.”

Ellingworth, added: “Tom showed last year what a hugely exciting talent he is and his victory on Alpe d’Huez was just brilliant. We’re looking forward to seeing him progress once again, applying what he learned last year.

“In Kwiato, Dani, Castro and Omar we have an abundance of experience and skill – each one of these guys knows what it takes to win at the top level.

“For Carlos and Ben, both making their Tour de France debuts, this is a big moment, and one they’re both looking to absorb and embrace. They’re both top quality bike riders, so they’ll certainly be ready to grab any opportunities along the way.”

There was no surprise as Mark Cavendish was named in the Astana Qazaqstan squad as the Manxman lines up for his final Tour. The 38-year-old, who will retire at the end of the season, is targeting a stage win that would see him claim the all-time Tour record outright, having joined Eddy Merckx on 34 in 2021.

Meanwhile, on Sunday Fred Wright ended his wait for a professional win in style as he became British men’s road champion in Saltburn.

The popular 24-year-old paid a heartfelt tribute to Bahrain Victorious team-mate Gino Mäder, who died on June 16 following a crash at the Tour de Suisse , pointing to the sky as he crossed the line.

“There’s lot of emotions,” Wright said. “I’m thinking about a lot of things...I just wanted to enjoy the day because that’s what bike racing is about. I can’t stop getting emotional...

“[Gino] would have believed in me today, more than I would have believed in myself.”

Wright earned fans with have-a-go heroics that brought podium finishes from breakaways at the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana last year, but had somehow still been awaiting victory at the top level.

But after he left behind James Knox and Stevie Williams on the last of 10 laps of a punishing course – including more than 3,500 metres of ascent – there would be no near miss this time.

Knox and Williams are purer climbers than Wright, but the 24-year-old Londoner rode smartly, attacking on the descent to the foot of Saltburn Bank, the short but steep final climb which provided the finale with gradients reaching 22 per cent.

“I was really pleased with the way I rode it,” Wright said. “I probably had the best legs of my life out there. I knew that compared to them I had to edge it on the downhill and the flat so I used that to my advantage to use as little energy as possible. It was just all guns blazing to the finish.

“I still can’t believe I’ve got my first professional win, it’s a monkey off my back. “I’ll go to the Tour with a lot of confidence,” he said. “I’ve won the national championships, I’m happy at the moment, and I’m going to keep trying.”

BWF French Open 2024: How to watch Lee Zii Jia live in action

Paris 2024

Discover how you can watch Lee Zii Jia at the BWF World Tour Super 750 event in Paris, France.

Malaysia badminton star Lee Zii Jia in dives to make a shot

Malaysian badminton star Lee Zii Jia will hope to get his season back on track this week at the Franch Open 2024 , from 5-10 March.

More Paris 2024 qualification ranking points are at stake at the BWF World Tour Super 750 event, as the race to secure Olympic qualification heats up.

Lee is currently the men's singles World No. 10, and will be hoping to break into the top eight in order to improve his potential Olympic draw.

His first opponent at the 2024 French Open is Magnus Johannesen, whom the Malaysian beat 2-0 in their previous encounter at the 2023 German Open.

But things will get tricky from there with World No. 2 Shi Yu Qi a potential second-round opponent, while Danish World No. 3 Anders Antonsen and World No. 6 Naraoka Kodai of Japan are in the same half of the draw.

Lee's 2024 got off to a bad start with a first round elimination at the Malaysia Open. He rebounded with victories over Indonesia's Jonatan Christie at the India Open and Kidambi Srikanth of India at the Indonesia Masters in January, but disappointingly bowed out of the quarter-finals of both.

The 2022 Badminton Asia Championship winner also played his part to help Malaysia emerge second at the Asia Team Championships last month with three simple victories, including a notable win over world No. 11 Nishimoto Kenta.

Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) continued his rich run of winning form by notching up his third victory of the UAE Tour on stage 6 to Abu Dhabi. The Belgian’s well-timed effort saw him beat Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) to the line in another frantic bunch sprint.

Overall leader Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) carries a buffer of 11 seconds into Sunday’s final stage, which features a summit finish at Jebel Hafeet.

Stage 5: Olav Kooij beats Tim Merlier in stage 5 photo finish

It was the closest sprint yet at the UAE Tour, with Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) narrowly denying Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) his hat-trick of stage wins on stage 5 in a photo-finish victory.

Merlier was majorly out of position in the final kilometre, forced to launch from way down in the peloton, with Kooij starting his sprint on the right-hand side of the road off the back of a strong Astana Qazaqstan lead out for Mark Cavendish.

As the Brit ran out of steam, Kooij made his dart for the line and just managed to pip Merlier by a few millimetres at the line with a great bike throw. Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe) was third.

Stage 4: UAE Tour: Tim Merlier wins stage 4 from chaotic sprint

Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) doubled up on wins at the 2024 UAE Tour with a second stage win after latching onto Olav Kooij's (Visma-Lease a Bike) early dart for the line and slingshotting out of the Dutchman's wheel. Kooij dropped to third at the line as Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling) also came around him.

Top sprinters Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Fabio Jakobsen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) failed to crack the top five after a hectic final rush for the important last corner left them out of position with the Australian also getting held up by a crash.

The late crash 2.6km from the finish managed to avoid the GC leaders despite slightly delaying  Jay Vine's (UAE Team Emirates) arrival at the finish, meaning the Australian carries his 11-second lead on Ben O'Connor into the fifth stage.

Stage 3: UAE Tour: Ben O'Connor strikes out for stage 3 victory atop Jebel Jais

Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) outfoxed the other GC favourites to take victory on stage 3 of the UAE Tour after launching a perfectly timed tandem attack with teammate Valentin Paret-Peintre in the final 1.2km of the Jebel Jais climb.

The Australian held off the chase from  Jay Vine  (UAE Team Emirates) in second and Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) in third after they failed to make contact following the opportunistic move.

But the Aussie's second-place finish and six bonus seconds gained meant he moved into the race lead ahead of teammate Brandon McNulty as the American struggled in the final sprint.

O'Connor gained ten bonus seconds with the win, moving him up to second overall, 11 seconds down on Vine while McNulty slipped to third, a further two seconds back.

Stage 2:   UAE Tour: Brandon McNulty wins time trial as home team claim 1-2-3

The USA's Brandon McNulty led UAE Team Emirates to a 1-2-3 in the 12.1km time trial stage on Hudayriyat Island south of Abu Dhabi, winning the stage in a time of 13:27. Jay Vine and Mikkel Bjerg completed the all UAE Team Emirates podium as they took control of their 'home' stage race.

Former world time trial champion Tobias Foss (Ineos Grenadiers) is now their closest overall rival after losing 14 seconds to McNulty.  Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious)  can also not be ruled out after he lost 19 seconds and finished fourth overall in 2023.

Stage 1: UAE Tour: Tim Merlier wins as late pile-up disrupts sprint

Tim Merlier (Soudal-Quick Step) won the first sprint of the 2024 UAE Tour, avoiding the chaos of a crash in the peloton with 250 metres to go and surging past Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) and Juan Sebastián Molano (UAE Team Emirates) to win with his arms in the air.

The crash happened in sight of the finish, with a touch of wheels causing a number of riders to crash at 70 km/h. Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling) and Jakub Mareczko (Corratec-Vini Fantini) came through to take second and third also passing Gaviria who faded to sixth in the final hundred metres.

Thanks to a ten-second time bonus for his stage victory, Merlier pulled on the race leader’s red jersey. However, stage 2 is a 12.1km time trial around Al Hudayriyat Island near Abu Dhabi, with the overall contenders and time trial specialists expected to dominate the results.

UAE Tour 2024 Information

The UAE Tour returns for a sixth edition in 2024, taking place over seven days from Madinat Zayed on February 19 to Jebel Hafeet on February 25. In 2024, the lone WorldTour race in the Middle East is positioned as the third event on the WorldTour calendar for men, as the Tour Down Under and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race returned to their January slots.

The UAE Tour launched in 2019 when two existing races merged, the Abu Dhabi Tour and the Dubai Tour. Primož Roglič won the inaugural race. Last year, Remco Evenepoel claimed the overall victory besting Luke Plapp and Adam Yates. In 2022, Tadej Pogačar won the overall title for the second year in a row, making it a replay of 2021 as he finished in front of runner-up Adam Yates.

In 2024, the route, which includes two mountain-top finishes and one individual time trial, is rounded out by four flat stages.  The final stage culminates with the climb of Jebel Hafeet which has been the grand finale of the seven-day stage race on multiple occasions. It has become a defining climb in the Middle East, having been part of the Abu Dhabi Tour and now the UAE Tour. The climb sits on one of the highest mountains in the United Arab Emirates and near the border with Oman.

UAE Tour contenders

Cycling’s biggest GC stars won’t be starting their 2024 seasons at the UAE Tour with the previous two winners of the race, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) opting for early programmes in Italy and Portugal.

But in their absence still remains a strong GC field with Tour de France podium sitter and winner of the recent Tour of Oman, Adam Yates set to line up as the heavy favourite. The Brit is a former winner from 2020 and has sat on the podium of the last four editions.

He’ll face close, but friendly competition from inside his team as Brandon McNulty and Jay Vine also feature on their starting roster here. Vine and McNulty may be better suited to the flat 12km individual time trial on stage 2, but Yates’ dominance on the most important climb - Jebel Hafeet - may prove the difference come the end of stage seven.

The Brit has won twice up the decisive climb and after blitzing the field up Green Mountain at last week’s Tour of Oman, he will be the man to beat on Jebel Hafeet. It makes up one of the three decisive moments for the GC contenders at 11km in length with an average gradient of 7%, alongside stage three’s summit finish on Jebel Jais (19km at 5.6%) which often ends in a reduced-bunch finish for the climbers and the stage 2 flat ITT.

Making his debut at the race is Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) , who could certainly feature in the latter stages on Hafeet and stick with Yates, alongside runner-up from 2023 Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla).

Plapp’s form is unknown after a tough period of racing Down Under, but he is entering the race as the road race and time trial national champion. He’ll enjoy any echelons and should have the advantage over the other GC contenders in the Al Hudayriyat Island time trial.

Bubbling under the known contenders for overall victory which also includes Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) is a whole host of youth talents hoping to step up against Yates. Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep) has already proved himself to an extent but a top WorldTour stage race result looks imminent.

His countryman Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) will be another rider under 23 hoping to show himself and his punch in a late sprint should make him strong up stage three’s Jebel Jais finish. Max Poole (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) will look to kick on in his second senior season after showing his talents in Romandie and at the Dauphiné last season.

The UAE Tour is incredibly important for the home team so Yates won’t want to be missing any echelons as he did in 2023. It also forms part of his run into the Tour de France where he was the best climbing domestique last year for Pogačar and his form will be vital should the Emirati team be able to defeat the reigning two-time champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).
