Traveling the world is an exciting adventure, but for many, it can be a stressful experience. Worries of safety, navigation, and tackling language barriers can be enough to put off many travelers, especially if you’re considering going solo.

Intrepid has been operating small group tours for over 30 years and is one of the major leaders in the industry. You can choose from over 1,000 tours to 100 destinations, selecting the comfort level that suits your budget and travel style. You’ll be guided throughout your journey — right from the point of booking — with advice on visas , currency, and other essential trip information .

Intrepid has been a fully carbon-neutral company since 2010 by investing in projects that actively reduce CO2 emissions. So you can feel safe in the knowledge that you’re traveling as green as possible while embarking on your adventure. Intrepid small group tours usually accommodate up to 16 people but tend to have an average of around 10.

Solo Travelers

Intrepid Solo Travel

Most of us have been in a situation where we’ve been desperate to go traveling, but none of our friends or family are in the position to go with us. You’re then left with the dilemma of going it alone or missing out on the experience altogether. Thankfully, that’s where a small group tour can help.

Even though you’re traveling solo, you’re never really alone on an Intrepid tour. There are rarely single supplement rates as you’ll buddy up with another traveler of the same gender. Of course, you still have the option to upgrade to your own room if you would like to.

Friends or Groups

Intrepid Friends and Groups

Joining a tour with a group of friends is great if you like the idea of spending time with them while also being open to mixing with other people. No one likes being the organizer, so joining a small group tour eliminates the pressure from 1 person having to book everything and manage payments. You’re all equal participants on an Intrepid tour.

Intrepid Family Travel

If you’re traveling with children under 17 , you’re welcome to join a family tour. Let someone else do the organizing and navigating so that you can enjoy the experience of traveling with your family . An Intrepid family tour can be a fun and educational experience for your child and can help them gain confidence by interacting with new people.

Hot Tip:  You might have a long flight or some lengthy road trips to contend with. Prepare yourself with some entertainment by checking out the best podcasts and audiobooks for travel .

If you’re on a budget or believe that a hotel is simply somewhere to rest your head for the night, a Basix Tour could be for you. This tour style focuses on simple accommodation (such as camping or homestays) and lots of free time, so you’re not spending money on excursions that you have no interest in.

Original Tours combine tourist-class accommodation (2- to 3-star hotels) with local and private transport. There’s a blend of planned excursions and independent exploration , suiting those travelers looking for a balance between guided local knowledge and free time.

Comfort Tours feature more comfortable and unique accommodation with more frills than the Basix and Original Tours. Private transport is used throughout, and these tours run at a slower pace with exploration and activities usually led by a guide.

Intrepid Travel Tour Themes and Destinations

18 to 29s tours.

18 to 29s Tours

As the name suggests, these tours are specifically for those that fall into the 18- to 29-years-old age bracket and tend to cover the highlights of a destination with lots of free time. With around 10 people per tour, there are plenty of opportunities for making friends , while also allowing you to explore independently if you prefer.

Hot Tip: Contiki is a similar tour company that caters to young travelers in a similar age bracket —  18 to 35 years old. Some tours can accommodate much larger groups, upwards of 50 people. Read more about the tour types and destinations in our Contiki review !

Adventure Cruising

Intrepid Adventure Cruises

Adventure Cruises accommodate less than 50 passengers  so the ships can explore places that large cruise liners can’t reach. Groups are large enough to socialize with various travelers but are small enough to feel that your arrival on land doesn’t swarm a destination impacting that local experience.

Hot Tip: Our ultimate cruise vacation packing checklist helps ensure that you have everything you need to be dressed for any occasion.

Cycling Tours

Intrepid Cycling Tours

Cycling Tours are an excellent way to enjoy the journey and the destination , peddling along with incredible views and authentic encounters. Each tour has a physical rating , so you can determine whether the trip is right for you, and includes a tour leader and support vehicle.

Hot Tip: If you’re an adventure seeker, you’ll want to pack all of the essentials for your next active vacation.

Family Tours

Intrepid Family Tours

Family Tours consist of family-friendly activities and accommodation mixed with flexible free time. Your tour leader will be specifically trained in family travel with groups accommodating 3 to 5 like-minded families.

Intrepid Food Tours

Food Tours will give you a true flavor of some of the world’s most famous culinary destinations . Discover fresh food markets and local restaurants, or try your hand at a cooking class.

Lonely Planet Experiences

Intrepid Lonely Planet Tours

Intrepid has partnered with Lonely Planet to provide exciting tours for adventurous and independent travelers. Seek out the mountain gorillas of Uganda or ride the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto. You’ll have a knowledgeable local leader and can read all about the destination before your trip with 12 months of free access to the Lonely Planet app .

Hot Tip:  Tours often include a fair bit of walking to see the sights, so you’ll need a good pair of hiking boots or shoes .

Polar Tours

Intrepid Polar Tours

They may be polar opposites, but the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic have 1 thing in common — they’re both incredible destinations. Look out for polar bears and the Northern Lights in the Arctic and kayak among breaching whales in the Antarctic. Exploration ships have modern amenities , and expert leaders hold interesting seminars and guide travelers on exciting excursions.

Hot Tip: One of our writers sailed to Antarctica on a trip booked through Intrepid .

Intrepid Retreats

Retreats are short breaks that could be just a short drive or flight from your home, where you live and explore as the locals do . All retreats feature 1 accommodation, so you’ll only have to unpack once with all your free time spent immersing yourself in the local community rather than traveling.

There is so much to see and do in Costa Rica , and with a tour, you can let someone else do the driving.

  • Includes transportation, accommodation, and some activities

Hot Tip:  Intrepid tours use locally run guesthouses, homestays, and restaurants to support local communities rather than large chains.

When you think of Cuba, you think of colorful colonial buildings, vintage cars, and turquoise waters. But there is so much more to see apart from the vibrant capital Havana and its beautiful beaches. Head out to Vinales to tour a traditional tobacco plantation or enjoy some salsa dancing in historical Trinidad.

  • Includes transportation, accommodation, and excursions

Peru Tour

Hike within the Andes to reach Machu Picchu — the most well-preserved archeological site for ancient Incan civilizations. The powdery white beaches of Phu Quoc Island are glorious, and wondrous waterfalls and caves make for fantastic photo opportunities. If variety is what you’re after, that is exactly what you’ll get visiting Vietnam. One minute you’re negotiating swarms of motorcycles crossing the road in Hanoi and the next your rafting peacefully down the rivers of Ninh Binh.

Hot Tip:  Find out the best ways to fly to Vietnam with points and miles . Currently, there are no direct routes from the U.S. to Vietnam, but with Vietnam Airlines recently receiving the required Air Carrier Permit, this could be on the horizon.

If you are lucky enough to have Kleberth Ovalle as your guide, you will leave much enriched.” — Deb

The transport was safe and well organised. Hotels were well situated and clean. We had plenty opportunities to explore on our own but there was always plenty of advice offered about places to avoid.” — Carol

Intrepid Travel and G Adventures are very similar in their product offerings, both offering a wide range of destinations and tour types. Intrepid has over 1,000 tours to over 100 counties , so it does exceed G Adventures’ 700 tours if the range is a factor for you.

Price-wise, both operators are pretty much on par with each other , but if you are comparing a similar itinerary, do check what inclusions are featured as some Intrepid packages include more bang for your buck than G Adventures.

Travel insurance is mandatory when traveling on an Intrepid tour, and your tour leader will need to see documentation before you set off. Although Intrepid doesn’t offer travel insurance, it recommends booking through World Nomads .

Intrepid recommends that your travel insurance covers you for:

  • Medical expenses and emergency repatriation
  • Personal liability
  • Cancellation
  • Curtailment
  • Loss of luggage and personal effects

Hot Tip:  Don’t get overwhelmed with the variety of travel insurance options available! We’ve created an ultimate guide to buying the best travel insurance to help simplify the process. You may also have travel coverages and benefits offered by your credit card .

While it’s unlikely that you’ll find Intrepid Travel promo codes on third party websites, Intrepid does frequently feature offers for specific destinations or tours that need a push. You’ll also find that booking well in advance can provide savings of 10% to 15% . No promo codes are required to obtain these deals; just visit the Travel Deals page on the Intrepid website.

The heart of Intrepid Travel is in its tour leaders — friendly locals, born and bred in the countries you’re discovering. Who better to show you around? Hello. I'm finishing up my paperwork for my Intrepid travel to Antarctica and I'm stuck at the travel insurance portion. Here is the requirements that Intrepid wants for anyone getting travel insurance for the the trip: must provide cover against personal accident, death, medical expenses, evacuation (including ship to shore transfer) and/ or emergency repatriation with a minimum coverage of USD250,000 for each of the categories of cover. Policy must specifically cover medical expenses, evacuation (including ship to shore transfer) and/ or emergency repatriation for COVID-19.

I'm not finding anything that covers up to 250,000 for accidental death. Can anyone recommend a travel insurance company that meets those requirements? Anyone else taking Intrepid for Antarctica and have any ideas?

Hello, I am having the same issue with Intrepid for my upcoming Antarctica trip. I called them and they said this is an ongoing issue and other passengers can’t find insurance that meets their requirements. They then emailed me the below link with the insurance they recommend, but I noted even the premium plan doesn’t meet their requirements. I emailed back asking if this insurance was acceptable but still haven’t heard back. Will keep you posted if I hear back.

https://www.generalitravelinsurance.com/find-a-plan/premium.html

Hey thanks for responding! Yeah, I don't know why their requirements are so intense. I reached out to G Adventure to ask what they required for travel insurance to Antarctica and it was much more manageable. I totally understand why travel insurance to Antarctica is important, but it doesn't help if no one provides what they require.

The travel you insurance you linked at the bottom of your post looks to be the one I'm about to purchase as well. They're the closest to covering everything that Intrepid requires

' class=

What does cover for "death" mean exactly? If you die wouldn't the expenses just be medical expenses (plus repatriation of your remains). Most policies I've looked at include "death" in the general medical cover and cover for medical expenses related to the death is unlimited in most of them. Repatriation of remains is an extra cover and is only $10-20k for most policies that I've looked at but I can't see them needing $250k for that specifically...

I read on another forum that NIB was one of the top recommendations for Antarctica and they have unlimited cover for medical (including death) and 500k+ (Depending on the policy) for emergency evacuation so that's the one I'm probably going to take.

On a side note, to the two here who mentioned that they are traveling with intrepid, what trip are you on? I'm on the Christmas/NYE crossing the circle voyage that leaves on Dec 21st. Anyone else on this one?

I’m on the voyage departing November 21st :)

Departing November 21st, Best of Antarctica.

Thanks for responding! In the portion of the paper work saying what travel insurance you get, Intrepid says: I confirm that my travel insurance policy has a minimum requirement of USD250,000 coverage for medical related expenses that includes medical evacuation and/or emergency repatriation cover, and specifically covers medical expenses, evacuation (including ship to shore transfer) and/ or emergency repatriation for COVID-19.

It doesn't say specifically death, so I think I'll get that Geralti Travel Insurance because it covers everything else that Intrepid requests.

We are on the same trip! I finally got through to someone today and they said the requirement they are working to get confirmation on is the personal accident as most companies don’t offer 250k. They said the Generali plan is likely fine but said they should be able to confirm by Monday. I will let you know when I hear back.

Just to update you, they got back to me and said the following: A minimum requirement of USD250,000 for the following three components is needed; emergency medical, evacuation (including ship to shore), repatriation. If components such as personal accident are lower it will be okay.

Ok, so can I ask what everyone has paid for their cover (the Aussies, that is?) I've had a whole bunch of quotes from $500, to $2k. the lower seems too low and the higher one seems ridiculously expensive, but if that's what I need to pay, that's what I need to pay. I just don't know what I need to pay, if you get me!

Thank you very much for the update!

What is Intrepid Travel?

In 1988, two friends, Darrell and Manch, were traveling with friends in a truck in parts of Africa when they came to a realization. They realized that more people would enjoy traveling while minimizing impacts by talking to many travelers. That kickstarted the tour operator  Intrepid Travel .

Apart from presenting a travel itinerary, Intrepid Travel also guarantees their customers a responsible travel experience with them. In order to ensure responsibility while traveling, Intrepid Travel has partnered up with many global and local funds and organizations like Blue Carbon Lab and Eden Reforestation Project.

Intrepid Travel has its own foundation, which funds initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and work towards a sustainable future.

What we like about Intrepid Travel

  • Ready-made packages

Intrepid Travel makes your trips so much easier. Choosing from a specific style and/or theme is the best part of this. It allows you to select a trip that is to your liking and within your budget. The intersection of the style and theme gives you even more options. What's even more remarkable is that all the destinations, accommodation, food, and transportation are arranged for you as you reach your destination.

  • Personalization

The thing with ready-made packages is that they don't have flexible arrival and departure dates. If you're someone who needs that freedom in traveling, tailor-made packages are just the thing for you. Even if you are the one who's deciding things, you wouldn't be the one spending time getting things together. Intrepid Travel and its local leaders will do everything for you.

  • Responsible travel

Responsible travel includes less carbon footprint, respect towards local cultures, and support for local communities. Your use of Intrepid Travel would contribute towards funding grassroots organizations, initiatives, and local communities. After all, responsible traveling isn't just where you'll be going; it's also on you as an individual traveler. Intrepid Travel adheres to COVID guidelines and ensures your safety.

While you aren't required to have travel insurance, Intrepid Travel will recommend travel insurance services, like World Nomads ,  if you think it's something you would like to have.

What's not-so-great about Intrepid Travel

  • Complaints on service

Intrepid Travel doesn't have a lot of bad reviews. But, we came across some complaints about low-quality accommodation, unreliable local guides, and poor service. Some negative reviews spoke of Intrepid Travel's delay/failure to process refunds during the pandemic. As always, it's important to know that no service is perfect, and there could be issues occasionally.

Compared to traveling solo, heading on a group tour with companies like Intrepid is a bit more expensive because most travel logistics and planning are arranged for you. Also, when you travel with a group, there's a higher chance of spending on extra "group" activities. However, you may not necessarily enjoy all of them. In this regard, we think it's better to  backpack  solo if you are quite a seasoned traveler.

Is Intrepid Travel Worth It?

Most of the past users have left satisfying reviews of Intrepid Travel. We also recommend it to travelers that want more out of your travel experience. We believe what they're offering is a great way to explore the world while maintaining a positive impact on the places you go!

You also have many other choices like  G Adventures ,  EF Ultimate Break , and  Under30Experiences  for guided group tours. So, do consider these options before you pick one!

Our Rating: 4.6/5

  • Tours that makes a positive impact
  • Responsible travel (low footprint)
  • Great tour packages
  • All Inclusive
  • Few complaints on quality of the tours
  • Slightly expensive

How to Find the Best Travel Insurance

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

» Learn more: Should you insure your cruise?

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

» Learn more: How annual (multi-trip) travel insurance works

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.

Some credit cards offer trip cancellation and rental car insurance if you use the card to book the trip or car.

When you book a trip with your credit card, depending on the card you use, you may already receive trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.

It's already included in your credit card.

You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.

» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

Whether you’re seeking a single or a long-term policy, each travel insurance option offers different strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right policy depends on your trip needs, your budget and how important various benefits are to you.

The best travel insurance policies and providers

Katie Genter

It's easy to dismiss the value of travel insurance until you need it.

Many travelers have strong opinions about whether you should buy travel insurance . However, the purpose of this post isn't to determine whether it's worth investing in. Instead, it compares some of the top travel insurance providers and policies so you can determine which travel insurance option is best for you.

Of course, as the coronavirus remains an ongoing concern, it's important to understand whether travel insurance covers pandemics. Some policies will cover you if you're diagnosed with COVID-19 and have proof of illness from a doctor. Others will take coverage a step further, covering additional types of pandemic-related expenses and cancellations.

Know, though, that every policy will have exclusions and restrictions that may limit coverage. For example, fear of travel is generally not a covered reason for invoking trip cancellation or interruption coverage, while specific stipulations may apply to elevated travel warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Interested in travel insurance? Visit InsureMyTrip.com to shop for plans that may fit your travel needs.

So, before buying a specific policy, you must understand the full terms and any special notices the insurer has about COVID-19. You may even want to buy the optional cancel for any reason add-on that's available for some comprehensive policies. While you'll pay more for that protection, it allows you to cancel your trip for any reason and still get some of your costs back. Note that this benefit is time-sensitive and has other eligibility requirements, so not all travelers will qualify.

In this guide, we'll review several policies from top travel insurance providers so you have a better understanding of your options before picking the policy and provider that best address your wants and needs.

The best travel insurance providers

To put together this list of the best travel insurance providers, a number of details were considered: favorable ratings from TPG Lounge members, the availability of details about policies and the claims process online, positive online ratings and the ability to purchase policies in most U.S. states. You can also search for options from these (and other) providers through an insurance comparison site like InsureMyTrip .

When comparing insurance providers, I priced out a single-trip policy for each provider for a $2,000, one-week vacation to Istanbul . I used my actual age and state of residence when obtaining quotes. As a result, you may see a different price — or even additional policies due to regulations for travel insurance varying from state to state — when getting a quote.

AIG Travel Guard

AIG Travel Guard receives many positive reviews from readers in the TPG Lounge who have filed claims with the company. AIG offers three plans online, which you can compare side by side, and the ability to examine sample policies. Here are three plans for my sample trip to Turkey.

intrepid travel insurance

AIG Travel Guard also offers an annual travel plan. This plan is priced at $259 per year for one Florida resident.

Additionally, AIG Travel Guard offers several other policies, including a single-trip policy without trip cancellation protection . See AIG Travel Guard's COVID-19 notification and COVID-19 advisory for current details regarding COVID-19 coverage.

Preexisting conditions

Typically, AIG Travel Guard wouldn't cover you for any loss or expense due to a preexisting medical condition that existed within 180 days of the coverage effective date. However, AIG Travel Guard may waive the preexisting medical condition exclusion on some plans if you meet the following conditions:

  • You purchase the plan within 15 days of your initial trip payment.
  • The amount of coverage you purchase equals all trip costs at the time of purchase. You must update your coverage to insure the costs of any subsequent arrangements that you add to your trip within 15 days of paying the travel supplier for these additional arrangements.
  • You must be medically able to travel when you purchase your plan.

Standout features

  • The Deluxe and Preferred plans allow you to purchase an upgrade that lets you cancel your trip for any reason. However, reimbursement under this coverage will not exceed 50% or 75% of your covered trip cost.
  • You can include one child (age 17 and younger) with each paying adult for no additional cost on most single-trip plans.
  • Other optional upgrades, including an adventure sports bundle, a baggage bundle, an inconvenience bundle, a pet bundle, a security bundle and a wedding bundle, are available on some policies. So, an AIG Travel Guard plan may be a good choice if you know you want extra coverage in specific areas.

Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz is one of the most highly regarded providers in the TPG Lounge, and many readers found the claim process reasonable. Allianz offers many plans, including the following single-trip plans for my sample trip to Turkey.

intrepid travel insurance

If you travel frequently, it may make sense to purchase an annual multi-trip policy. For this plan, all of the maximum coverage amounts in the table below are per trip (except for the trip cancellation and trip interruption amounts, which are an aggregate limit per policy). Trips typically must last no more than 45 days, although some plans may cover trips of up to 90 days.

intrepid travel insurance

See Allianz's coverage alert for current information on COVID-19 coverage.

Most Allianz travel insurance plans may cover preexisting medical conditions if you meet particular requirements. For the OneTrip Premier, Prime and Basic plans, the requirements are as follows:

  • You purchased the policy within 14 days of the date of the first trip payment or deposit.
  • You were a U.S. resident when you purchased the policy.
  • You were medically able to travel when you purchased the policy.
  • On the policy purchase date, you insured the total, nonrefundable cost of your trip (including arrangements that will become nonrefundable or subject to cancellation penalties before your departure date). If you incur additional nonrefundable trip expenses after purchasing this policy, you must insure them within 14 days of their purchase.
  • Allianz offers reasonably priced annual policies for independent travelers and families who take multiple trips lasting up to 45 days (or 90 days for select plans) per year.
  • Some Allianz plans provide the option of receiving a flat reimbursement amount without receipts for trip delay and baggage delay claims. Of course, you can also submit receipts to get up to the maximum refund.
  • For emergency transportation coverage, you or someone on your behalf must contact Allianz, and Allianz must then make all transportation arrangements in advance. However, most Allianz policies provide an option if you cannot contact the company: Allianz will pay up to what it would have paid if it had made the arrangements.

American Express Travel Insurance

American Express Travel Insurance offers four different package plans and a build-your-own coverage option. You don't have to be an American Express cardholder to purchase this insurance. Here are the four package options for my sample weeklong trip to Turkey. Unlike some other providers, Amex won't ask for your travel destination on the initial quote (but will when you purchase the plan).

intrepid travel insurance

Amex's build-your-own coverage plan is unique because you can purchase just the coverage you need. For most types of protection, you can even select the coverage amount that works best for you.

intrepid travel insurance

The prices for the packages and the build-your-own plan don't increase for longer trips — as long as the trip cost remains constant. However, the emergency medical and dental benefit is only available for your first 60 days of travel.

Typically, Amex won't cover any loss you incur because of a preexisting medical condition that existed within 90 days of the coverage effective date. However, Amex may waive its preexisting-condition exclusion if you meet both of the following requirements:

  • You must be medically able to travel at the time you pay the policy premium.
  • You pay the policy premium within 14 days of making the first covered trip deposit.
  • Amex's build-your-own coverage option allows you to only purchase — and pay for — the coverage you need.
  • Coverage on long trips doesn't cost more than coverage for short trips, making this policy ideal for extended getaways. However, the emergency medical and dental benefit only covers your first 60 days of travel.
  • American Express Travel Insurance can protect travel expenses you purchase with Amex Membership Rewards points in the Pay with Points program (as well as travel expenses bought with cash, debit or credit). However, travel expenses bought with other types of points and miles aren't covered.

GeoBlue is different from most other providers described in this piece because it only provides medical coverage while you're traveling internationally and does not offer benefits to protect the cost of your trip. There are many different policies. Some require you to have primary health insurance in the U.S. (although it doesn't need to be provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield), but all of them only offer coverage while traveling outside the U.S.

Two single-trip plans are available if you're traveling for six months or less. The Voyager Choice policy provides coverage (including medical services and medical evacuation for a sudden recurrence of a preexisting condition) for trips outside the U.S. to travelers who are 95 or younger and already have a U.S. health insurance policy.

intrepid travel insurance

The Voyager Essential policy provides coverage (including medical evacuation for a sudden recurrence of a preexisting condition) for trips outside the U.S. to travelers who are 95 or younger, regardless of whether they have primary health insurance.

intrepid travel insurance

In addition to these options, two multi-trip plans cover trips of up to 70 days each for one year. Both policies provide coverage (including medical services and medical evacuation for preexisting conditions) to travelers with primary health insurance.

intrepid travel insurance

Be sure to check out GeoBlue's COVID-19 notices before buying a plan.

Most GeoBlue policies explicitly cover sudden recurrences of preexisting conditions for medical services and medical evacuation.

  • GeoBlue can be an excellent option if you're mainly concerned about the medical side of travel insurance.
  • GeoBlue provides single-trip, multi-trip and long-term medical travel insurance policies for many different types of travel.

Purchase your policy here: GeoBlue .

IMG offers various travel medical insurance policies for travelers, as well as comprehensive travel insurance policies. For a single trip of 90 days or less, there are five policy types available for vacation or holiday travelers. Although you must enter your gender, males and females received the same quote for my one-week search.

intrepid travel insurance

You can purchase an annual multi-trip travel medical insurance plan. Some only cover trips lasting up to 30 or 45 days, but others provide coverage for longer trips.

intrepid travel insurance

See IMG's page on COVID-19 for additional policy information as it relates to coronavirus-related claims.

Most plans may cover preexisting conditions under set parameters or up to specific amounts. For example, the iTravelInsured Travel LX travel insurance plan shown above may cover preexisting conditions if you purchase the insurance within 24 hours of making the final payment for your trip.

For the travel medical insurance plans shown above, preexisting conditions are covered for travelers younger than 70. However, coverage is capped based on your age and whether you have a primary health insurance policy.

  • Some annual multi-trip plans are modestly priced.
  • iTravelInsured Travel LX may offer optional cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason coverage, if eligible.

Purchase your policy here: IMG .

Travelex Insurance

Travelex offers three single-trip plans: Travel Basic, Travel Select and Travel America. However, only the Travel Basic and Travel Select plans would be applicable for my trip to Turkey.

intrepid travel insurance

See Travelex's COVID-19 coverage statement for coronavirus-specific information.

Typically, Travelex won't cover losses incurred because of a preexisting medical condition that existed within 60 days of the coverage effective date. However, the Travel Select plan may offer a preexisting condition exclusion waiver. To be eligible for this waiver, the insured traveler must meet all the following conditions:

  • You purchase the plan within 15 days of the initial trip payment.
  • The amount of coverage purchased equals all prepaid, nonrefundable payments or deposits applicable to the trip at the time of purchase. Additionally, you must insure the costs of any subsequent arrangements added to the same trip within 15 days of payment or deposit.
  • All insured individuals are medically able to travel when they pay the plan cost.
  • The trip cost does not exceed the maximum trip cost limit under trip cancellation as shown in the schedule per person (only applicable to trip cancellation, interruption and delay).
  • Travelex's Travel Select policy can cover trips lasting up to 364 days, which is longer than many single-trip policies.
  • Neither Travelex policy requires receipts for trip and baggage delay expenses less than $25.
  • For emergency evacuation coverage, you or someone on your behalf must contact Travelex and have Travelex make all transportation arrangements in advance. However, both Travelex policies provide an option if you cannot contact Travelex: Travelex will pay up to what it would have paid if it had made the arrangements.

Seven Corners

Seven Corners offers a wide variety of policies. Here are the policies that are most applicable to travelers on a single international trip.

intrepid travel insurance

Seven Corners also offers many other types of travel insurance, including an annual multi-trip plan. You can choose coverage for trips of up to 30, 45 or 60 days when purchasing an annual multi-trip plan.

intrepid travel insurance

See Seven Corner's page on COVID-19 for additional policy information as it relates to coronavirus-related claims.

Typically, Seven Corners won't cover losses incurred because of a preexisting medical condition. However, the RoundTrip Choice plan offers a preexisting condition exclusion waiver. To be eligible for this waiver, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • You buy this plan within 20 days of making your initial trip payment or deposit.
  • You or your travel companion are medically able and not disabled from travel when you pay for this plan or upgrade your plan.
  • You update the coverage to include the additional cost of subsequent travel arrangements within 15 days of paying your travel supplier for them.
  • Seven Corners offers the ability to purchase optional sports and golf equipment coverage. If purchased, this extra insurance will reimburse you for the cost of renting sports or golf equipment if yours is lost, stolen, damaged or delayed by a common carrier for six or more hours. However, Seven Corners must authorize the expenses in advance.
  • You can add cancel for any reason coverage or trip interruption for any reason coverage to RoundTrip plans. Although some other providers offer cancel for any reason coverage, trip interruption for any reason coverage is less common.
  • Seven Corners' RoundTrip Choice policy offers a political or security evacuation benefit that will transport you to the nearest safe place or your residence under specific conditions. You can also add optional event ticket registration fee protection to the RoundTrip Choice policy.

Purchase your policy here: Seven Corners .

World Nomads

World Nomads is popular with younger, active travelers because of its flexibility and adventure-activities coverage on the Explorer plan. Unlike many policies offered by other providers, you don't need to estimate prepaid costs when purchasing the insurance to have access to trip interruption and cancellation insurance.

World Nomads offers two single-trip plans.

intrepid travel insurance

World Nomads has a page dedicated to coronavirus coverage , so be sure to view it before buying a policy.

World Nomads won't cover losses incurred because of a preexisting medical condition (except emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains) that existed within 90 days of the coverage effective date. Unlike many other providers, World Nomads doesn't offer a waiver.

  • World Nomads' policies cover more adventure sports than most providers, so activities such as bungee jumping are included. The Explorer policy covers almost any adventure sport, including skydiving, stunt flying and caving. So, if you partake in adventure sports while traveling, the Explorer policy may be a good fit.
  • World Nomads' policies provide nonmedical evacuation coverage for transportation expenses if there is civil or political unrest in the country you are visiting. The coverage may also transport you home if there is an eligible natural disaster or a government expels you.

Other options for buying travel insurance

intrepid travel insurance

This guide details the policies of eight providers with the information available at the time of publication. There are many options when it comes to travel insurance, though. To compare different policies quickly, you can use a travel insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip to search. Just note that these search engines won't show every policy and every provider, and you should still research the provided policies to ensure the coverage fits your trip and needs.

You can also purchase a plan through various membership associations, such as USAA, AAA or Costco. Typically, these organizations partner with a specific provider, so if you are a member of any of these associations, you may want to compare the policies offered through the organization with other policies to get the best coverage for your trip.

Related: Should you get travel insurance if you have credit card protection?

Is travel insurance worth getting?

Whether you should purchase travel insurance is a personal decision. Suppose you use a credit card that provides travel insurance for most of your expenses and have medical insurance that provides adequate coverage abroad. In that case, you may be covered enough on most trips to forgo purchasing travel insurance.

However, suppose your medical insurance won't cover you at your destination and you can't comfortably cover a sizable medical evacuation bill or last-minute flight home . In that case, you should consider purchasing travel insurance. If you travel frequently, buying an annual multi-trip policy may be worth it.

What is the best COVID-19 travel insurance?

intrepid travel insurance

There are various aspects to keep in mind in the age of COVID-19. Consider booking travel plans that are fully refundable or have modest change or cancellation fees so you don't need to worry about whether your policy will cover trip cancellation. This is important since many standard comprehensive insurance policies won't reimburse your insured expenses in the event of cancellation if it's related to the fear of traveling due to COVID-19.

However, if you book a nonrefundable trip and want to maintain the ability to get reimbursed (up to 75% of your insured costs) if you choose to cancel, you should consider buying a comprehensive travel insurance policy and then adding optional cancel for any reason protection. Just note that this benefit is time-sensitive and has eligibility requirements, so not all travelers will qualify.

Providers will often require CFAR purchasers insure the entire dollar amount of their travels to receive the coverage. Also, many CFAR policies mandate that you must cancel your plans and notify all travel suppliers at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure.

Likewise, if your primary health insurance won't cover you while on your trip, it's essential to consider whether medical expenses related to COVID-19 treatment are covered. You may also want to consider a MedJet medical transport membership if your trip is to a covered destination for coronavirus-related evacuation.

Ultimately, the best pandemic travel insurance policy will depend on your trip details, travel concerns and your willingness to self-insure. Just be sure to thoroughly read and understand any terms or exclusions before purchasing.

What are the different types of travel insurance?

intrepid travel insurance

Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or rely on the protections offered by select credit cards, you may have access to the following types of coverage:

  • Baggage delay protection may reimburse for essential items and clothing when a common carrier (such as an airline) fails to deliver your checked bag within a set time of your arrival at a destination. Typically, you may be reimbursed up to a particular amount per incident or per day.
  • Lost/damaged baggage protection may provide reimbursement to replace lost or damaged luggage and items inside that luggage. However, valuables and electronics usually have a relatively low maximum benefit.
  • Trip delay reimbursement may provide reimbursement for necessary items, food, lodging and sometimes transportation when you're delayed for a substantial time while traveling on a common carrier such as an airline. This insurance may be beneficial if weather issues (or other covered reasons for which the airline usually won't provide compensation) delay you.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection may provide reimbursement if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason, such as a death in your family or jury duty.
  • Medical evacuation insurance can arrange and pay for medical evacuation if deemed necessary by the insurance provider and a medical professional. This coverage can be particularly valuable if you're traveling to a region with subpar medical facilities.
  • Travel accident insurance may provide a payment to you or your beneficiary in the case of your death or dismemberment.
  • Emergency medical insurance may provide payment or reimburse you if you must seek medical care while traveling. Some plans only cover emergency medical care, but some also cover other types of medical care. You may need to pay a deductible or copay.
  • Rental car coverage may provide a collision damage waiver when renting a car. This waiver may reimburse for collision damage or theft up to a set amount. Some policies also cover loss-of-use charges assessed by the rental company and towing charges to take the vehicle to the nearest qualified repair facility. You generally need to decline the rental company's collision damage waiver or similar provision to be covered.

Should I buy travel health insurance?

intrepid travel insurance

If you purchase travel with credit cards that provide various trip protections, you may not see much need for additional travel insurance. However, you may still wonder whether you should buy travel medical insurance.

If your primary health insurance covers you on your trip, you may not need travel health insurance. Your domestic policy may not cover you outside the U.S., though, so it's worth calling the number on your health insurance card if you have coverage questions. If your primary health insurance wouldn't cover you, it's likely worth purchasing travel medical insurance. After all, as you can see above, travel medical insurance is often very modestly priced.

How much does travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance costs depend on various factors, including the provider, the type of coverage, your trip cost, your destination, your age, your residency and how many travelers you want to insure. That said, a standard travel insurance plan will generally set you back somewhere between 4% and 10% of your total trip cost. However, this can get lower for more basic protections or become even higher if you include add-ons like cancel for any reason protection.

The best way to determine how much travel insurance will cost is to price out your trip with a few providers discussed in the guide. Or, visit an insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip to quickly compare options across multiple providers.

When and how to get travel insurance

intrepid travel insurance

For the most robust selection of available travel insurance benefits — including time-sensitive add-ons like CFAR protection and waivers of preexisting conditions for eligible travelers — you should ideally purchase travel insurance on the same day you make your first payment toward your trip.

However, many plans may still offer a preexisting conditions waiver for those who qualify if you buy your travel insurance within 14 to 21 days of your first trip expense or deposit (this time frame may vary by provider). If you don't need a preexisting conditions waiver or aren't interested in CFAR coverage, you can purchase travel insurance once your departure date nears.

You must purchase coverage before it's needed. Some travel medical plans are available for purchase after you have departed, but comprehensive plans that include medical coverage must be purchased before departing.

Additionally, you can't buy any medical coverage once you require medical attention. The same applies to all travel insurance coverage. Once you recognize the need, it's too late to protect your trip.

Once you've shopped around and decided upon the best travel insurance plan for your trip, you should be able to complete your purchase online. You'll usually be able to download your insurance card and the complete policy shortly after the transaction is complete.

Related: 7 times your credit card's travel insurance might not cover you

Bottom line

Not all travel insurance policies and providers are equal. Before buying a plan, read and understand the policy documents. By doing so, you can choose a plan that's appropriate for you and your trip — including the features that matter most to you.

For example, if you plan to go skiing or rock climbing, make sure the policy you buy doesn't contain exclusions for these activities. Likewise, if you're making two back-to-back trips during which you'll be returning home for a short time in between, be sure the plan doesn't terminate coverage at the end of your first trip.

If you're looking to cover a sudden recurrence of a preexisting condition, select a policy with a preexisting condition waiver and fulfill the requirements for the waiver. After all, buying insurance won't help if your policy doesn't cover your losses.

Intrepid Travel and battleface partner to promote insurance

Intrepid will promote the insurer as an option to travellers as part of its mandatory insurance policies.

Insurer battleface has partnered with adventure travel provider Intrepid Travel to provide travel insurance for its UK and EU customers.

Under the new arrangement, Intrepid says it will act as an ‘introducer’ for battleface, introducing its customers to the insurer’s services as part of its booking process.

However, Intrepid insists that this role does not equate to a recommendation of specific policy requirements for customers.

Travel insurance is mandatory for all international Intrepid-provided trips, and the travel operator recommends that policies should have both medical expense and repatriation provisions as a minimum.

The company also strongly recommends that all travellers also purchase policies to cover personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of personal items.

“We are pleased to be partnering with battleface for insurance services,” said Joanna Reeve, Head of Partnerships at Intrepid Travel. “In the current landscape, it’s more important than ever that travellers have adequate insurance cover to give them peace of mind.”

battleface recently launched its new customisable travel insurance platform on 15 October.

I chose Intrepid due to their small…

I chose Intrepid due to their small group. Their choice in hotels are "0". Here we are in Jakarta to Ubud trip, safety deposit box are encouraged. But i was placed in 3 Rms where they would not work or required someone to come in my room after the fact that I'm already checked in. The toilet also stopped flushing, I honestly had a meltdown! The last thing i need is someone working in the room after a long journey on a minubus or train. The guide was very thoughtful and helpful, a"5". Some of the local itinerary (local factories tour) was subpar or we didn't get a chance to see because they were off or it was the weekend or something else... My biggest disappointment was really choice in hotels. Oh and someone was sick in the group who was a talker and just kept coughing in everyone's face. We are stuffed in a minivan for long rides from city to city sometimes and he would talk non stop and didn't bother covering his mouth when coughing. Intrepid should encourage masking for people who have symptoms such as coughing. He got this other lady sick and I ended up getting sick after a week after.

Cycle Sri Lanka

Cycle Sri Lanka - is truly a well researched and planned 14 day itinerary that gave us a beautiful introduction to Sri Lanka as a whole as opposed to just the tourist sites. It was so lovely to not have to make decisions as to what to do and see during the two weeks. Both Indi and the bike & bus crew were by far the best we have ‘ever’ experienced on a cycling holiday. They fully looked after us all and genuinely cared for us throughout our adventure. 👍

Thank you so much for such a lovely review and for highlighting your amazing tour leader! We are so glad that you had a great trip and hope that you continue to explore our other cycling tours throughout the world!

Outstanding & Meaningful Travel Experiences

Intrepid offers a consistently outstanding travel experience, often taking you off the beaten path and exposing you to the real life history and culture of the place you are visiting. Tour leaders are passionate about their country and anxious to communicate, share and impart that enthusiasm. I've taken five trips with Intrepid to varying parts of the world and have always returned home a happier and better person.

I absolutely loved this trip to Antarctica

I absolutely loved this trip. It was very expensive but once we were on the expedition ship you could see why. Everything was just brilliantly organised; the food was excellent, the drinks were a fair price, the whole crew were exceptional, friendly and always there with a smile and happy to chat. The twice-daily excursions were always very well organised, and the crew who took us on them were knowledgeable, friendly and professional. Our beds were turned down every night, it was all just so comfortable. I met so many lovely people and there were a lot of us solo travellers. On a slightly negative side, the Ocean Endeavour's decor is still in the 80s and very much needs updating. The evening entertainment wasn't great on some nights, a couple of evenings there was absolutely nothing to do and I had to ask for music one evening just to try and liven the lounge room up. Other evenings - especially the indoor live music and outside barbecue with DJ - were fantastic. In my 'port hole' cabin the port hole (window) was sealed shut with a metal cover during the two trips along the Drake Passage meaning we had no natural light and had no outside view for four of the eight days at sea. I would've appreciated being advised of this beforehand in order to have a choice of another cabin where there was a window to see the wonderful views during the entire journey. The onboard wi-fi (in this day and age) was charged at an unnecessary extortionate price, and I know it's free on other Antarctica ships. But all-in-all I can't believe I finally made it to Antarctica. It was as wonderful as I imagined it would be, and quite a few of us wished we could've stayed there longer.

Date of experience : January 27, 2024

Hi Sarah, thank you for such a wonderful review! It is amazing to hear of your experience and that you met some new friends while exploring incredible Antarctica with us. We would appreciate the opportunity to speak to you about your cabin, if you would kindly email our team at [email protected] with your booking ID (please send it privately). We hope to hear from you, and stay well.

Intrepid Travel offers Terrible Unprofessional service Not sure why the reviews are so good.

Not sure why the reviews are so good. INTREPID maybe a Canadian company, but they are unresponsive and unprofessional to the point of exasperation. I had to insult them several times on the phone for their unprofessionalism and unresponsiveness. My air fares went up by 30% while waiting for their negative answers and I had to pry the answers with pliers over a 20 day period. Stay away. If sailing, try Intersail Group

Date of experience : February 27, 2024

Hi Carlos, thank you for your review. We are sorry you had to wait for answers regarding your specific requests- our team wanted to make sure that we could provide the extra services you were after rather than booking you on a tour that would not have been what you had hoped for. Just to offer some clarity around our company, we are an Australian owned, Bcorps certified business and we do have global offices. We wish you well with Intersail.

A great trip

As always with Intrepid, thr guide and driver on a recent trip to Namibia were brilliant. The accommodation was wonderful and the food fantastic. The variety of activities made this an ever changing and absorbing experience. Highly recommend

Thank you for such a lovely review, Deborah! We are happy to know that you had a great time discovering beautiful Namibia, with our wonderful crew. We look forward to hosting you again in future, stay well.

Fabulous journey covering all the main sights of Egypt. Mo our guide was brilliant and remains a friend over a year later. Very knowledgeable and he took us to some great restaurants with amazing views over some sights like the Temple of Luxor. The overnight train from Cairo to Aswan was a fantastic experience! Highly recommend this trip.

Hello Julie, Thank you or taking the time to post your review and for recommending this trip to others. It’s great know that you had a fabulous time exploring Egypt, that the overnight train was such a highlight, and that you are still friends with your tour leader, over a year after taking this trip. Abandoned in South America when things went wrong

My husband booked a holiday for us with Intrepid, to include Buenos Aires, Iguacu and finishing in Rio de Janeiro. Due to industrial strike action in Argentina, we weren’t able to get there (the whole country shut down the day we were meant to arrive with no flights) and because we’d flown via Rio, we were stranded in Brazil. We looked to intrepid to help transfer our accommodation and help us but they didn’t. We had to book our own. My husband called and called and chased them to see what bookings from our original trip could be transferred because we explained we’d booked to get to Buenos Aires two days later, but they wouldn’t help. We secured a new booking at the original hotel and it took them 3 more days to finally agree speak to the hotel in Buenos Aires to transfer our booking. They managed to screw that up too as they booked two single beds when our own booking had confirmed a king bed. It was so disappointing. Upon our return to Rio (tonight) they’d assured us we had a booking at a hotel which not only turned out to be untrue (and we’ve had to pay ourselves again) but the hotel is a dump. We were literally left with no choice to take a room here at 2am otherwise we’d be waking the streets of Rio with our suitcases. Intrepid have been such a let down and the major cause is stress on this holiday. Their idea of a ‘luxury’ hotel is also way off what ours is. The hotels which we did manage to stay at through them (or were meant to be through them!) were average at best. I would not recommend arranging anything through them as they abandon you when things go wrong.

The Best of Sri Lanka

This trip is packed with adventures and opportunities to explore the highlights of Sri Lanka. We loved the variety of sights and experiences, including exploring temples & ancient ruins, magnificent 9 Arch bridge, hiking in the highlands past tea plantations, the stunning beaches, waterfalls and also the home visits to savour the amazing cuisine and wonderful hospitality! Our guide Martish was totally exceptional, generously sharing his encyclopaedic knowledge and ensuring our time in SL was a memorable and fulfilling one.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us on your Best of Sr Lanka tour, Tamrae. We are always so overjoyed to hear when our customers have felt like they have really explored the country and it certainly sounds as if you did! We are pleased to hear that your tour leader, Martish went above and beyond sharing his local knowledge and ensuring your group had a trip to remember. All the best, Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel is Top Notch

I have gone on five Intrepid trips in the past year -- Cycling Viet Nam, Morocco, Turkey, Costa Rica and Borneo. I have been extremely happy with the itineraries, which have included some physically challenging activities (sometimes included and sometimes optional) along with the homestays. The prices have been very reasonable, and all of my groups have been small (12 or fewer). The trip leaders have been terrific and knowledgeable about the places we visited and have offered great recommendations on everything from restaurants to laundry services. Intrepid is also using their purchasing power to encourage good behavior by their vendors, such as reducing the use of plastic bottles. I like that Intrepid offers different levels of comfort from basic, original, comfort and premium. I have been very happy with original (3 star) because I prefer to spend my dollars on experiences more than accommodations. I am super impressed with this company and hope to take many more trips with them.

Do not book a tour with Intrepid

Do not book a tour with Intrepid. Their “policy” on deposits is unreasonable, inflexible and downright thieving. I booked a tour in India with them over seven months ahead of its departure date, paying a 400 euro deposit. I then learned that another tour I planned to take immediately following theirs was unavailable for my desired dates even though the website showed it was available. Because I then could not find any other suitable tours that fit with the Intrepid tour dates I booked, I asked Intrepid, just three days after my booking, to credit my 400 euro deposit to another of their tours. They very rudely refused, insisting that their “policy” didn’t allow credits much less refunds. They didn’t care that the tour was over seven months away or that I made my request for a credit within three days of the booking. Fortunately, the good people at PayPal saw how unfair this was and refunded my 400 euros. You may not be so lucky. Avoid the thieves at Intrepid. There are plenty of other tour companies that don’t try to rip you off like Intrepid does.

'Premium Northern Thailand'

On my return from 'Premium Northern Thailand' in January 24, I contacted Intrepid to discuss what I saw as the ONLY fault in an otherwise superb trip (I have done eight, so I have solid grounds for comparison!) My complaint was centred around the train trip that takes place on day 6 of the tour. Various factors conspired to see the group travel in non-airconditioned carriages for 6 hours! I was heard by senior management of Intrepid, each of whom took my comments most seriously and have kept me advised about their actions. I felt that this matter could not have been more effectively dealt with and gave me continued confidence to travel again with Intrepid.

I did the Moroccan Family Comfort…

I did the Moroccan Family Comfort holiday. It was awesome. I was traveling with my twins, 6 years old at the time. It was a small group and we loved it. We learned a lot about the people and the culture there. Beautiful Country. Our tour guide was the best. I am planning on going back with my mother-in-law and the kids to do it all over again with Intrepid Travel.

Date of experience : December 18, 2023

Thanks so much for you amazing feedback, and for taking your children with you to see such a magical part of the world. We agree that seeing the world through a childs eyes is a whole new experience and we are so glad that you all loved Morocco as much as we love Morocco! We can't wait to welcome you all back!

Japan:Land of the Rising Sun

Great trip, lots packed into 13 days. Be prepared for a lot of walking and travelling, but well worth it. Pack light and wear good comfortable shoes that you can take off and put on easily! Guide Machiko was brilliant, nothing too much trouble. Varied destinations and great trips, brilliant food and Sake was lovely. Only slight downside was several nights rooms in Ryokans had shared toilet facilities, and sleeping on floor can be difficult if you struggle to get up. Having said that would recommend (Group of 12 was a good size)

Date of experience : October 05, 2023

Hello John, thank you for your review! We're delighted that you had a great adventure with us in Japan and appreciate your feedback on all aspects of the trip. We hope to welcome you on another Intrepid tour in the near future.

The best of Sri Lanka was just that - and we can't wait to return

We have just returned from a 15 day tour of the Best of Sri Lanka! What a wonderful trip. This really was the best of.Our guide, Ranjan went above and beyond to ensure we had the most authentic trip and that everyone was well looked after. We woke to the sound of peacocks calling by the Indian Ocean in Mirissa, were served tea in the heart of verdant tea plantations on our treks, rode bikes through ancient temple sites at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa amongst the pilgrims and the monkeys, hung out of trains as they travelled through the lush green countryside, and marvelled at the treasures hidden up high in the Dambulla Cave Temples. New Year's Day saw us trek up Lion's Rock at 5am to toast the new year as the sun rose - we were rewarded with biblical rain instead! Our guide and driver were fantastic, even suggesting and organising detours to Ella, the Nine Arch Bridge and the Tsunami museum and Buddha statue....and introduced us to burnt cashew nuts. Wonderful trip, a wonderful guide. We will be back.

Hi JB! Thank you for the lovely review of your time with us- it sounds like the perfect way to ring in 2024. We are thrilled to know of your unique experiences and how Ranjan truly took care of the group. We look forward to seeing you for your next adventure, should you consider us. Stay well.

Totally Inflexible

I booked a once in a lifetime trip to see Gorillas with my daughter several years ago now, with Intrepid. I payed around £6,000 in total. My daughter was then living in South Africa and unfortunately contracted malaria, about 4 weeks before we were due to start our tour. Luckily she fully recovered but we were unable to make the tour. Despite contacting Intrepid numerous times, they were totally inflexible about changing our tour dates or refunding ANY of the money. We let them know immediately when she became ill but they were adamant there was nothing they could or would do. They told me to claim on my insurance. Because I'd paid for my daughter's tour too, my insurance would only refund my tour. I basically lost £3,000 by booking with Intrepid and would consequently never book with them again.

Date of experience : January 26, 2023

Hi Julia, thank you for your post. We are sorry to hear that you were unable to travel with us due to medical reasons, however our terms and conditions are advised on before travel- and those are agreed to in your contract upon payment. Our cancellation policies are outlined in our online platform should you wish to review. The insurance coverage purchased by our travellers does need to meet our base requirements- medical, emergency evacuation and repatriation. Should you want to have us look at your file again, please email [email protected] with your booking number (please do not post it publicly). The issuance of refunds, from insurers, do get processed based on the policy purchased. We are sorry that we were not able to host you on what would have been an amazing tour. We hope to hear from you. Stay well.

Intrepid tour of Egypt…

Our Egyptian guide Ahmed Fawzy brought a wonderful trip to a new level. His knowledge and understanding of Egyptian history and culture was outstanding but the care and thoughtfulness he gave to all of us was the icing on the cake. We felt we were in such capable hands and our safety and comfort was always a high priority. Can’t thank Ahmed enough for making it the best trip we have ever been on.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us, Eleanor. We are delighted to hear how your tour leader, Ahmed brought your wonderful trip to a new level. Our incredible local leaders are an asset to our company and we are so pleased that Ahmed's knowledge and thoughtfulness made this the best trip you have ever been on. We look forward to welcoming you on another adventure in the not-so-distant future. All the best, Intrepid Travel

So much iconic history!

I was fascinated by the historic sites we saw, and learning of their stories. Our guide Büsra, was excellent explaining the various activities, and in dealing with the minor crises, such as finding a dentist for my husband’s dental emergency! Turkish Delight is much better in Turkey than in Australia, but may be difficult on loose fillings! Unfortunately the tour does not include enough time in Istanbul, and we were glad to spend a week there exploring on our own. It was very safe on our own and with the group! ***** Ann

Date of experience : October 25, 2023

Hi Ann, thank you for letting us know about your experience during your time in Turkey! We are pleased to hear that you were supported by Busra during - what can be- a stressful time. We are pleased to know you arranged extra time to explore Istanbul and to indulge in some authentic Turkish Delight- how wonderful! We look forward to seeing you again, should you afford us the opportunity to host you in future. Have a fantastic rest of 2023! Stay well.

We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food…

We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment.

Date of experience : October 20, 2023

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. Mike. We are delighted to hear that your tour leader positively impacted your time in Italy and that you all enjoyed the experience as a group. We look forward to welcoming you on another Intrepid trip in the near future. All the best.

Intrepid Travel Reviews | IntrepidTravel.com

  • Intrepid Travel is an adventure travel agency founded in 1989
  • Fully escorted tours for small groups
  • Helps travelers experience travel at the grassroots level, where travelers meet local people, try local food and have real life cultural experiences.  Intrepid carries core values of maintaining responsible and sustainable travel
  • Top 20 Must-do Trips list , as voted by Intrepid Travel customers

Our Editor’s Review:

The small group tours that Intrepid offers are typically limited to about 12 travelers, with 3 different “styles” of trips to choose from: Basix ,  Original ,  Comfort .  We liked that we could search by “style” and “theme” to truly find the type of package that would suit our interests.  The basix style offers the least amenities in budget and shared accommodations. The original style steps it up a bit with private accommodations and more inclusions, while the comfort style packages are the most luxurious tour packages offered by Intrepid.  We were shocked to find 5-day comfort tour packages for only $450 (HINT: sort results by price to see these deals).

If you’re up for adventure but not sure where to go, check out Intrepid’s Top 20 Must-do Trips list. Here we found excellent information about the best rated tours all on one page. They also list the price of the tour including airfare from either NYC or LAX, so you can instantly see whether it is within your budget.  Click on the package inclusions button to see what’s included.  Many travel tours include meals, but not all of them do.

If you want to stay close to home, they’ve got some amazing adventure packages within the U.S., such as the 21-day American Experience where travelers hike the Mojave Desert and tour the Grand Canyon, Zion, and relax in Napa Valley with the local wine.  For the more adventurous passport-carrying traveler, we can think of nothing better than the 15-day Best of Morocco tour package complete with a camel ride and a night of camping under the stars in the Sahara.

Intrepid provides an absolute plethora of information about each trip, which you can view in the “Trip Notes” section. This several page document is a very valuable read, and will tell you all you need to know from the daily itinerary, to tipping guidelines, to where to do your laundry. Of interest is the “Physical Rating”, which lets you know on a scale of 1-5 how physically demanding the tour is expected to be.  For instance, a level 3 requires you to be in good physical condition, while a level 5 requires you to be ready for extreme conditions.

We like that Intrepid doesn’t censor their customer’s feedback comments , which are posted prominently throughout their website.  Intrepid Travel wants feedback from their customers, which they’ve proven with their feedback discount.  When you return home from your Intrepid Travel trip and leave online feedback at IntrepidTravel.com within 4 weeks, you may qualify for a 5% discount off your next trip.   Another way to get a discount is to book one of their last-minute trips that hasn’t sold out at a 20% discount , which you can find under their Specials tab .

With such an extensive website, we kept getting lost and forgetting where to find information, which was a bit of a challenge.   F or fami lies that travel with their children, be aware that Intrepid’s age policy often only allows for children age 12 and over to take part in their tours.  While we assume this is for safety reasons and many children under the age of 12 may not be physically ready for an adventure travel tour, Intrepid is excluding a large customer base of families that wish to take their children on learning adventures.  That being said, we did find about 37 family-themed tours that allowed children (we saw one for children over the age of 6).   A link to these family tours can be found here , or under their Styles tab .

Read the extensive package details page (aka. Trip Notes) carefully, and read it twice if you need to.  You don’t want to be caught off-guard if something is not included in your trip that you thought should be.  Airfare and airport transfers are typically not included in an Intrepid Travel package, but may be added at the time of booking.

Intrepid Travel Fees & Policies*:

  • Cancellations 60+ days before departure, traveler will forfeit deposit amount (typically $250) + airline fees

Best of Italy offered by Intrepid (an Australian company)

Beware travelers from US, I found out that I had paid 80% more than non-US based travelers. I certainly expect the US company make some money selling this package, but 10 to 15% seems to be a lot more reasonable.

The scheduled itinerary was fine, however there was too much hustling to catch a train from one location to next. Hotels were sub-standard, just to have them close to train stations.

The tour leader was too arrogant and not much concerned with the travelers’ needs.

In spite of the Intrepid poor arrangements, I enjoyed my trip as I am travel savvy and independent and can find the things of my interest, figure out my way around, and do as I prefer.

I do not think the cost of the trip was right for the service I received. I could have done the trip on my own, with a few days longer and a lot cheaper. I will not travel with Intrepid ever again.

Antarctica Expedition Cruise with Intrepid Travel: Everything You Want Know

During the lockdowns of the covid-19 pandemic, I sat in my childhood bedroom and stared at the map on my wall. I thought of how it had been so long since I had been able to travel and how many places I still had to go. As my eyes ran across the unpinned places I had yet to visit imagining what it would be like to go I got caught on the thin, white landmass at the very bottom: Antarctica. The vast, far, and very expensive continent that I had always dreamed of visiting but figured I wouldn’t get the chance until later in life. But with months of no travel I had saved quite a bit of money. So, at that moment, I decided that when this pandemic was over, I was going to Antarctica.

I planned my Antarctica adventure as one of my ESBT group trips . After sharing on Instagram stories that I was ready to go I had plenty of followers express their interest as well. So, I reached out to my friends at Intrepid Travel and we put together a group trip. An 11-day journey to the end of the world . I had 11 other adventurous sign up to go with me and on January 12 th , 21 months after I originally had the idea to visit, we boarded our ship, the Ocean Endeavour, and headed south to Antarctica.

My Antarctica voyage was, hands-down, the best travel experience of my life. While I’ve tried my best, my stories, photos, and videos just don’t do this place justice. It really is somewhere that you need to see and experience for yourself to understand why everyone who comes back claims that it is life-changing. But it’s also a huge trip to plan. So, if you are considering an Antarctica expedition cruise then this post is for you. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Antarctica with Intrepid Travel.

The Best Time to Go to Antarctica

intrepid travel insurance

Antarctica is a seasonal destination. Antarctica cruises only run during the summer months, but keep in mind it’s in the southern hemisphere so summer in this case means November to March. Each month has its advantages.

November is the start of the season with the cleanest landing sites- not yet visited by other travellers and not yet navigated by pooping penguins. My cruise stuck to the Antarctica Peninsula but if you do an Antarctic expedition cruise that also goes to South Georgia November is a good time to see emperor penguins.

December is known for warmer weather, longer days, and active wildlife. Seal pups and migrating whales tend to be a highlight of travel during this month.

January is the peak of summer with plenty of sunlight. Whales, penguins (including chicks), seals, and birds are abundant. I went in January and we saw so much wildlife it was unreal.

February marks the start of peak season for whales. You will still see plenty of penguins and seals.

March is the end of the season, but there is still lots to see. It’s still peak whale season and there are plenty of seals. Penguins start moulting in March and might look grumpy but the chicks are bigger and more fun to watch. Prices also tend to be cheapest during this time as it is the end of the season.

An Antarctic Expedition Cruise: What Does That Mean?

intrepid travel insurance

The main way to travel to Antarctica is by cruise ship, but not all cruises are the same. Expedition cruises place an emphasis on adventure and shore exploration. The team is made up of scientists and experts in the field and education is part of the package. Expedition ships are also much smaller and built for the voyage. They able to navigate rougher seas and smaller bays, rather than typical cruise ships which place more of an emphasis on aesthetics and onboard entertainment.

In Antarctica, only ships with a maximum of 200 passengers are able to disembark and make landings. Larger ships can only sail by so keep this in mind when shopping around for the best Antarctica cruises.

How Much Does a Trip to Antarctica Cost?

intrepid travel insurance

While many find Antarctica as a destination intriguing, most people are quickly turned away by the price. So, how much does a trip to Antarctica cost? Well, it depends on several factors. My 11-day Antarctica expedition cruise with Intrepid Travel started at about $10,000 CAD per person. This is for a single bed in a 3-berth interior cabin. Bigger and private cabins are available for an additional cost. The most expensive option is the category 10 ‘owners suite’ which is closer to $20,000. Believe it or not, these prices are on the low end when it comes to Antarctica expedition cruises.

What is Included in the Antarctica trip cost?

intrepid travel insurance

Included in the cost is:

  • 1 night at a hotel pre-departure
  • Your cabin space on board the ship
  • Some equipment and gear (more on this to come)
  • Expeditions on land and via zodiac for up to 4 days of the trip
  • All meals while on board
  • Access to pool/hot tub/sauna/gym facilities
  • Access to expert lectures

Antarctica Expedition Add-Ons

intrepid travel insurance

For an additional cost, you can choose to add some more activities to your Antarctica expedition cruise. If you are exploring Antarctica with Intrepid Travel these include the following:

Sea Kayaking Program: Instead of going out in the zodiacs, those who are part of the sea kayaking program will explore Antarctica by kayak. Opportunities are weather dependent but assuming it’s safe, you can kayak at every stop. Kayak experience is required. The cost of sea kayaking during my voyage was a little over $1099 USD. One member of my group joined the kayak program and loved it. However, she did choose to forgo kayaking a few times to get the zodiac/landing experience.

Polar Photography Workshop: This program is spread across the duration of our Antarctica cruise. Those in the group attended workshops with the group leaders who were renowned expert photographers. The photography group also had their own zodiacs during all outings and were the first to depart every time. The cost of the polar photography program during my voyage was $1099 USD. Four members of my group were part of the photography workshop and loved it. As an outsider looking in, I would say this program had the best value.

Camping on Antarctica: This was a 1-night opportunity and, of course, was weather dependent. It’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience but don’t expect a good sleep. You do not get a tent, but rather a thin matt, sleeping bag, and bivy bag to zip yourself up in. I did this and while I’m glad to be able to have done it I would never in a million years do it again. The cost of camping in Antarctica during my voyage was $399USD.

Keep in mind that the above three programs all have limited space and are booked on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you have your heart set on something specific, book it right away.

Furthermore, you may also get the option to do a day paddle or snowshoe. This is weather dependent and will be decided during the cruise itself. Should the expedition team decide to run these activities, you can sign up and pay on board.

On top of the ship and any extras, you will want to factor in some extra money for drinks on board. There is also a small shop for souvenirs (including postcards if you want to send one from Antarctica).

Don’t forget you will also need to book your flights separately. If you are departing from Ushuaia like I did, you will likely fly into Buenos Aires and then take another flight to Ushuaia. While this is a domestic flight, it’s still pretty expensive. My roundtrip from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia cost $700CAD on top of my flights from Canada to Buenos Aires.

Also, travel insurance is mandatory. While this shouldn’t be too expensive it will add an extra cost to your budget. For those looking for travel insurance recommendations, I use and love SafetyWing .

All costs incurred onboard are in USD and can be paid via cash or major credit card.

Life on Board the Ocean Endeavour

intrepid travel insurance

The ship serves as your home for the duration of the cruise. You sleep, eat, and hang out here when not on land. Keep in mind it takes two days to sail through the Drake Passage and you have to pass through it going down and coming back.

Entertainment on Board

This Antarctica expedition cruise isn’t like a typical cruise line with comedy shows and musical performances. While we did have a couple of musicians on board who sang/played for us some evenings, the entertainment provided came in the form of lectures. The Intrepid staff on board were a mix of scientists and experts in various fields. We learned about the local wildlife: different species birds (including penguins of course!), whales, and seals. We also learned about the history of Antarctica from famous explorers like Shackleton to lesser known women who had voyaged to the continent. My favourite lecture was hearing stories from crew member Simon who had several years of experience aboard Sea Shepherd ships deterring Japanese whaling ships.

All lectures were optional to attend but provided great experiences to learn more about the wildlife, history, and land we were visiting.

There were also evening programs in place. Our cruise was a mix between Intrepid and Chimu and for this cruise, Chimu was in charge of entertainment. I’ll be honest, it sucked. Their audience was very different from the Intrepid one and the evening events were very boring. But we just did our own thing instead.

What are meals like onboard?

intrepid travel insurance

All meals are served in the dining room on the Ocean Endeavour. Meal times were pretty consistent every day. Breakfast and lunch were buffet styles. Breakfast was the same every day with a mix of fruits, cheeses and meats, eggs, potatoes, waffles, toast, breakfast pastries etc. There was also an omelette station available (assuming the sea wasn’t too rough). Lunch varied daily with several options and a salad buffet. Dinner was usually a la carte with a rotating menu every evening. That being said, there were always several options always available you didn’t want to choose something on the menu.

Food allergies and intolerances were taken very seriously. One woman on our trip had a severe nut allergy and as such there were no nuts included on the menu. Another individual had a citrus allergy. Orange juice was available at breakfast but no other citrus fruits were around. Guests were also told of these allergies in advance and asked to avoid any of these types of snacks they may have brought on board.

Vegetarian options were always available. A couple from my group were vegetarian and while there was always something to eat, sometimes they did wish there were more protein options available to them.

As for alcohol, it was available at an extra expense. There was a wine package advertised at the beginning of the journey. You could order drinks with lunch and dinner in the restaurant and there was also an onboard bar which had plenty of options including beers, wine, cocktails, juices, soda, and more. There were fountains to fill your water bottle around the ship. There was also a small coffee spot with basic coffee, tea, and hot cocoa powder. You could order a speciality coffee at an additional cost.

What are the cabins like?

intrepid travel insurance

As mentioned earlier, there are a wide variety of cabins available. If you are travelling on your own and do not pay for a single room then you will be partnered with someone of the same sex in a shared cabin. Some cabins are interior, meaning they have no windows. Some cabins will have a full window (or more) or just a porthole. Bathrooms are small but functional and include basic toiletries, towels, and hair dryers. Rooms also have storage space and televisions where you can watch a couple of rotating movies or tune into the lectures.

I had a category 8 room (pictured above) which had a double bed, desk, couch, armchairs, and a window. It was incredibly spacious which was really nice. I chose to spend most of my time in the common areas with my group than alone in my room so having a big room wasn’t a big priority. That being said, I was seasick the first day and having my own space was really nice for that.

Extra facilities

On top of the daily scheduled lectures, there were also wellness programs run by one of the staff members. She did a rotation of yoga and sauna stretching. These were available to book down at the reception desk on a first come first serve basis and filled up very quickly. Of course, this was also dependent on the state of the weather and how much the ship was rocking.

There was a gym space with some basic equipment that was free for everyone to use as well as two saunas; one of which could be booked for private sessions. Once we got through the Drake passage there was also an outdoor heated pool and hot tub for anyone to use.

Crossing the Drake Passage

intrepid travel insurance

Unless you plan on flying to Antarctica (which you can do for a steep price), you will have to sail through the infamous Drake Passage. The Drake is known as the roughest sea crossing in the world and historically has downed hundreds of ships and taken the lives of even more sailors. Of course, with today’s technology, it’s much safer and ships will plan their route accordingly. That being said, it can still be very rough. If you are lucky, you’ll get the ‘Drake Lake’ which are calmer waters. The opposite, however, is the ‘Drake Shake’ which has huge swells.

Do people get seasick?

Yes. Definitely. The Drake isn’t like typical waters. I’ve spent a lot of time on boats between cottage life, sailing trips, a Panama Canal cruise, and of course dozens of dive trips out into the open water on small boats. I’ve never been seasick before and yet I got incredibly sick my first day and spend almost the full day in bed. It was awful.

I highly suggest getting proper medication beforehand and starting them your first night before you enter the Drake as a preventative. It’s much easier to prevent than ‘stop’. I asked my pharmacist for pills and didn’t realize the ones she gave me had no medicine and were just ginger. They did nothing. I called the ship’s doctor who gave me some more tablets but I was too sick and couldn’t keep them down. In the end, I was saved by a member of my group who had some extra Scopolamine patches which, thankfully, worked really well for me. Keep in mind that they do have some big side effects so discuss with your doctor. Also, they are not available in Canada.

Was it scary?

Honestly, no. But I’m not afraid of boats. That being said, there were some Drake Shake injuries on board. We had to navigate a storm on the way back and experienced a full day of the Drake Shake. The waves were 10m high, which was more like 20m with the dips in the swells. We have hurricane-force 2 level winds and the boat tilted 21 degrees at one point- we were pretty close to being told to confine in our cabins. Thankfully it didn’t get to that stage, however, one woman did get stuck in an elevator and another lady did fall and break/crack a rib. She was seen by the doctor and given the OK but the only thing you can do for that type of injury is let it heal on its own.

Keep in mind that this type of ‘shake’ was only considered a level 5 on a scale of 1-10. If it is bad, ships will delay. We met some people in Buenos Aires who spent an extra day cruising to avoid a storm. This is an Antarctica expedition cruise- it is built for this. Plus, the captain and crew know what they are doing and will not go through if it’s too dangerous.

Excursions in Antarctica

intrepid travel insurance

On the 11-day Antarctica expedition cruise, the goal was 4 days ‘in’ Antarctica with two expeditions each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Of course, everything is entirely weather dependent. Our voyage went much further south than normal as we were trying to avoid the storms and we got incredibly lucky by getting to do two experiences each of those four days. However, I’ve heard that the goal is to hit 50% of this since the weather and conditions can turn so quickly and be unpredictable. Despite our luck, we still experienced some of that and changed our plans last minute due to ice and wind.

For the excursions, they are typically divided into zodiac cruising and landings. For most stops we got to do some of each but some places were zodiac only. On the days where you did both, it was usually about 45 minutes or so on the zodiac, then an hour on land. On days when it was zodiac only it was about 1.5 hours. If something exciting was going on (ie: whales nearby) we stayed out a bit longer.

There was also always a ‘zodiac only’ option for individuals who didn’t want to go to shore. In which case they would get the longer cruise.

Zodiac Excursions in Antarctica

intrepid travel insurance

Zodiacs are types of boats used. They are sturdy and made for adventure but inflatable. You sit on the sides so you have great views as you zip around the bays and icebergs. It can be chilly so dress warmly. You definitely want to make sure you have waterproof layers on (and a waterproof bag for your belongings) because there can be some spray. Lifejackets are provided and mandatory to wear at all times.

Some of our excursions involved a lot of driving around while others we turned off the motor and floated. This allowed the wildlife to get really close. We had a leopard seal underneath our first day, a humpback whale surface literally 5m beside us on our third day, and on our final day, a dozen or so Gentoo penguins swam around and under us. It was absolutely incredible being this close to the wildlife and for those wondering- yes, I always felt safe onboard.

Shore Landings in Antarctica

We would also use the zodiacs to transport us from the ship to the shore. This means that we often had wet landings (again, you get waterproof boots and need to have waterproof pants). Sometimes the landings could be a bit slippery and rocky but there were always expedition team members to help you get on or off. Some of the terrain for our landings was steep and the conditions could be icy, but walking poles were available to those who needed them.

Once on land, there were specific trails made for us to follow. Oftentimes these crossed over ‘penguin highways’ which are the routes penguins take. This means we had to occasionally wait for penguin traffic to pass which is just about the cutest thing ever.

Most of our landings took us close to penguin colonies. The winter had been really harsh and many eggs hadn’t hatched but we did see a couple of penguin chicks at two of our stops: fluffy little grey babies. The team was really good at spotting them and then helping you figure out where to look.

What can you see?

intrepid travel insurance

Every trip is different and there are no guarantees but we saw tons of wildlife during every expedition and even just from the ship.

Penguins: Gentoo, Adelie, and Chinstrap

Seals: Weddell, Crabeater, Leopard, and a baby Elephant Seal

Whales: Humpbacks, Orcas, and Minke

There were also a bunch of different types of birds. I was sick during the bird lecture and missed the names of most of them but I know we saw some terns and albatrosses.

Of course I can’t not mention the landscape. While icebergs and mountains may not seem super exciting compared to penguins and whales, the landscape in Antarctica is stunning to see. Even when not out in zodiacs its worth being out on the deck of the ship to watch.

The Antarctica Polar Plunge

intrepid travel insurance

One of the highlights for many Antarctica travellers is the polar plunge! It’s a tradition on Antarctica expedition cruises and assuming the weather and conditioners are ok, all guests will have the chance to participate. Your polar plunge might take place in a bay where you jump off the boat or it could be at a beach where you run in.

Our polar plunge took place in Hidden Bay and we jumped off the ship. As a safety precaution, you wear a harness around your waist and there is a doctor on standby. The water during my plunge was -0.5C and the air was around -1C. It was actually snowing.

Some people are concerned about the wildlife in the water for the polar plunge. Keep in mind that the captain and crew will only do it if they deem it to be safe. Orcas have never killed a human in the wild and leopard seal attacks are incredibly rare. There are no polar bears or sharks in Antarctica. As for sea monsters, well those can be anywhere!

There is no charge to do the polar plunge, anyone is invited to participate! We had warm towels ready for us when we got out and an optional shot of vodka. After you can go to the sauna, pool or hot tub, or to your room for a hot shower.

Packing List & Provided Gear

intrepid travel insurance

I have an entire post dedicated to what to wear in Antarctica so I suggest you give it a read for my best tips on advice on what to pack for everything from clothing to cameras.

As for the gear provided by the ship, our Antarctica expedition cruise provided us with insulated puffer jackets which we got to keep at the end of the trip. These were handy for layering for excursions and for wearing out on the deck. We then also got to borrow expedition parkas and muck boots for the duration of the trip.

When you fill out your final paperwork you will be asked for your shoe size as well as your clothing size for the jackets. The boots will all be regular size but they do have some wide-width options available on board if needed. Jackets go up to size men’s 3XL.

I found the size chart to be accurate but there were some mix-ups in my group and the wrong size puffer jackets were provided. Most were able to exchange, but the larger sizes run out much more quickly so if you are unsure or in-between sizes, go bigger. It’s easier to size down. If your measurements exceed what’s listed on the size chart you will need to bring your own gear.

Is Travel to Antarctica Ethical?

intrepid travel insurance

This is a huge question. It comes up a lot in relation to Antarctica travel and was something we also discussed several times in lectures on board as well.

Antarctica is considered to be one of the last pristine places on the planet and many believe that tourism shouldn’t operate here, it should be left alone. Others, including IAATO ,  argue that tourism here can be done responsibly and can be incredibly educational and help better preserve this piece of the world.

I am no scientist or expert. But, as a traveller who is constantly learning and striving to be as responsible and ethical with her travel, here’s my take.

To start with, we like to say this part of the world is untouched. In some ways it is. There are no cities or towns. It’s wild nature. But humanity has, willingly or not, still touched it. Garbage can still make it this far and wash up on the shores. It’s also one of the places in the world where the ozone layer is the thinnest.

The Intrepid Travel Antarctica expedition cruise also places heavy emphasis on the importance of visiting this part of the world responsibly. A huge part of our cruise was education; not just in terms of the onboard lectures but when out on the zodiacs exploring. Our guides aren’t just your average adventure junkies. They are bird and whale experts. Scientists, activists, and environmentalists who advocate for eco-friendly travel. We also leaned about Citizen Science projects such as Happy Whale and were encouraged to partake in these programs during our time onboard and into the future.

There is also a huge process and a number of rules for all our land visits. Gear had to be approved and cleaned before leaving the boat. If it didn’t meet the requirements, you weren’t allowed to wear it to shore. We washed our boots and stepped in a special solution before and after every landing. We stuck to specific paths and guides covered up any holes made by our steps in the snow after every outing.

There were dozens of rules for keeping our distance from the wildlife and even in terms of interacting with the environment. There was no sitting or lying on the ground to get better photos. From what I saw, our group as a whole was very good at sticking to these rules. The couple of times people did fall out of line and go off the path etc. they were quickly seen and called back in place.

Personally, I think that seeing Antarctica and how special it is made me care even more about protecting it. To be able to get so close to wildlife and know that the seals, penguins, and whales could afford to be curious because we weren’t a threat to them was truly incredible ( Antarctica’s flora and fauna are protected ). It was a reminder of what the world should be. Maybe what it could be, and now that I’m back I find myself even more aware of things I can do to lessen my carbon footprint in my day-to-day and travel life.

At the end of the day, it’s a personal decision and something you can argue both ways. If you do decide to visit this part of the world then be sure to choose an Antarctica expedition cruise with a reputable company, like Intrepid Travel, that prioritizes ethical and responsible travel.

Is an Antarctica Expedition Cruise Worth it?

intrepid travel insurance

Yes. Absolutely, 100% yes.

Without a doubt, my Antarctica expedition cruise with Intrepid Travel has been the highlight of my travel career. There is nowhere in the world like it and as much as I try my stories and photos do not do it justice.

I wrote a postcard to myself while I was there. I wrote, “if the world ever loses its magic, come back to Antarctica.” Because truly, ‘magic’ is the best way to describe this piece of the planet.

I hope that if you dream of going to Antarctica that you get the chance. It is a huge cost but for me, it was absolutely worth it and I will return one day.

Is the Intrepid Antarctica Expedition Cruise solo-traveller friendly?

Definitely! There were plenty of solo travellers on board! If you want to pay more for a private room you can. Otherwise, you will be paired with someone else of the same gender. Since it’s the same group on board for the full duration its also very easy to meet people.

Do you see many other ships?

Typically, no. Only so many people are allowed to disembark in one place in Antarctica so it’s not like usual cruise ports where you will have multiple ships in place at once. Most Antarctica expedition cruises don’t see other ships at all for the duration of the journey, except for maybe some small sailboats (yes, people actually sail here). Again, we were avoiding a big storm system and ‘safe’ patches were minimal so we did actually see two other ships briefly in passing: A Quark ship and a National Geographic ship. But they had their own stops and we just crossed paths briefly on the first day. After that, it was just us, the ice, and the wildlife.

Do cabins go on sale?

Occasionally yes, they do. Which is fantastic for saving money however its normally closer to the departure date at which point extras like kayaking and photography programs are already booked up. If that doesn’t matter to you then you can wait and see. Keep in mind the longer you wait, the more expensive flights will be as well and as I said earlier they aren’t cheap to begin with. If you are already travelling, your best chance at getting a deal would be to hang out on the docks of Ushuaia and get a last minute spot. However, it’s not guaranteed and only worth it if you are already there.

Will you be running another ESBT group trip to Antarctica?

You bet! I have an epic 3-week itinerary trip on the go for 2025. Learn more here.
