Preparing for a newborn can feel like an exhilarating task; on the one hand, there’s a long-anticipated, already much-loved new arrival making an entrance into your life. On the other, getting yourself into a birthing headspace can feel like a marathon. I’ve already lost count of the amount of  stroller reviews , hypno-birthing manuals, crib catalogs, and paint samples I’ve flicked through in my quest for newborn nirvana.

With that in mind, many couples are now opting to take a break from the organizational overload in the form of a  long-haul babymoon —a pre-birth couples vacation—as a way of spending those last special moments together as a family of two. And in fact, air travel can generally be considered  safe for most expectant mothers , with advice from your doctor recommended.

“All pregnancies and mums have individual needs and varying circumstances,” says Marie Louise, midwife and author of  The Modern Midwife’s Guide To Pregnancy . “If mums have any health complications or are close to giving birth, travel should be very carefully considered. Otherwise, mums need a break—it’s good to enjoy and relax on your travels.”

Pregnancy can often feel like a long-haul adventure in itself, and whilst the thought of an extensive flight may not jump out at the top of your to-do list, there are ways to make that coveted trip—and any other air travel during pregnancy that comes up—more comfortable.

Below, I’ve curated an essential list for what to pack in your carry-on for air travel during pregnancy, based in part on my own experience traveling to Europe whilst expecting.

Strategic carry-ons

A great place to start is your carry-on itself, as the right style can help not only to make your essentials more accessible, but the correct product can be re-used as a diaper bag once your pre-baby vacation is a distant happy memory. The key to  choosing the perfect carry-on is not only to be mindful of the airline guidelines set out around dimensions and weight restrictions, but to think from your own perspective about what will be easiest for you to carry. If back issues prevail—a common complaint during pregnancy—a stylish rucksack may be more suitable than a tote. And if you’re looking for post-pregnancy practicality, a duffel can tick that cross-functional box.

Pregnancy support bands

Glamour takes a back seat with this essential, but your posture and ligaments will thank me later. If you’re flying internationally or just maneuvering your way through a large airport, you may face long walks between terminals, which can place strain on the lower back. Bump support bands are designed to help relieve the pressure that the additional weight of your bump is putting on your back, and therefore can make a sensible addition to your carry-on packing list.

Anti-nausea pregnancy methods

Not every foray into the world of parenthood is a smooth one, and unfortunately  nausea and sickness can play a starring role in pregnancy, especially in the early stages. My first 16 weeks of pregnancy were punctuated with frequent trips to the restroom, and with many flights taken during this time, I became accustomed to having to rely on a few tricks to see me through those difficult moments.

Travel bands can be an excellent way to relieve pregnancy related nausea, and they’ve taken a high-tech turn in recent years. Hypnotherapy podcasts can also be a calming way to reduce feelings of sickness, and are best listened to with noise-canceling headphones and an eye mask .

Hydrating skincare for expectant mothers

Pregnancy can present some interesting  skincare dilemmas , with many people experiencing a change at some point across their nine months. Dry patches, oily T-zones, and acne outbreaks are all common complaints. To help skin stay hydrated when flying, there are many pregnancy-safe products out there which can help replenish and restore your skin's natural barrier. La Mer The Mist Facial Spray is a particular favorite of mine—easy to apply, super lightweight, and long-lasting.

Travel pillows

During pregnancy, ligaments in the hips and back loosen in preparation for birth and this can often cause secondary strain across the top of the shoulders and neck which can be very uncomfortable for expectant mothers. If you’re traveling whilst pregnant, I recommend investing in a travel neck pillow , and packing your pregnancy pillow if you’re flying in a seat with a lie-flat bed.

Compression socks

“During pregnancy, you are at an increased risk of developing a blood clot,” Louise says. “That’s why compression socks , hydration, and movement—walking, stretching, and circling ankles—is recommended.”

Again, it’s not the most glamorous addition to your carry-on, but this footwear is important nonetheless. Try to stretch your legs every hour or so if possible, with a walk down the aisle or some lower leg exercises.

While packing a well-stocked carry-on will undoubtedly enhance your flying experience, there are other ways to ensure that you’re prepared for a relaxing trip. Here are my top three tips for flying while pregnant:

Food and beverage choices

Whilst it’s unlikely you’ll be able to see the full on-board menu in advance, it’s often a good idea to pre-select your meal genre if you’re having  aversions or preferences during your pregnancy. Being able to rule out meat, dairy, or even opt for a lighter option may be preferable for some mothers-to-be. It could be worth packing a couple of extra snacks in your carry-on, just in case. I’ve been stashing ginger tea bags and plenty of dried fruit and nuts ( dried banana chips are a particular craving of mine) to see me through.

The airport experience

Lounge access can not only be an enjoyable way to kick-off your vacation, it can also be a lifesaver for tired feet. Having access to a clean and comfortable restroom can also often be advantageous, so if your travel tickets don’t include a lounge as standard, it could be worth a  pay-for-access option to give you peace of mind that you’ll be spending time in a calm and restful environment before or in between flights.

Your travel outfit

While a stylish airport look is always desirable, comfort should definitely reign supreme during this important period, since your body is already coping with so much. Activewear can provide comfort and support during long-haul travel, and there are  plenty of options out there. I look to brands like  Alo Yoga and  Lululemon for pieces that satisfy both the style and comfort stakes.

Checklist: What to Bring When Traveling While Pregnant

profile picture of Joanne Chen

Whoever said it’s about the journey and not the destination has never flown economy while pregnant. Whether you’re on vacation or a business trip, the usual indignities only get worse when you’re expecting—crowded seats feel super-cramped, and dry, recirculating air does extra damage on pregnancy-sensitive skin. Then there’s the heightened risk of blood clots and dehydration, just to name a few more inconveniences standing in the way between you and that sandy-white beach (or a drab but now appealingly expansive conference hall). We can’t make the misery disappear, but we can recommend a few expert-approved items to stash in your carry-on that’ll make a world of a difference.

travel bands pregnancy

1. Anti-nausea Treatment

Not-so-fun fact: Women who are prone to motion sickness are likelier to suffer from morning sickness , says Shannon M. Clark, associate professor of maternal-fetal medicine at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. If you’re one of the unlucky ducks vulnerable to this double-whammy, then you definitely need to bring your ginger tea or lollipops , prescription anti-nausea meds or motion-sickness bands —whatever works for you on the ground will help in the air.

2. Comfortable Shoes

Note the plural. That’s because you need to make sure to wear flats onto the plane. (We’re partial to ballet flats—they’re cute, easy to slip on and off at the security gate, and are comfy for walking up and down the aisle during the flight—which you definitely should do to keep that circulation going). But you should also pack a pair of flip-flops, which Clark did when traveling with twins on the way. “Your feet will swell up, so your size at the end of the trip won’t be necessarily the same as they were in the beginning of the trip,” Clark says. Rather than cramming them into your shoes, flip-flops are an easy solution (as are some other light but stretchy weather-appropriate shoe).

3. Compression Socks

These are helpful even if you’re not pregnant, but if you are, they’re practically mandatory, given that your circulation will be poor in the lower part of your legs. Wear these socks on board and you’ll keep your circulation humming along, preventing varicose veins as well as potentially life-threatening clots. Choose a pair that feels snug but not restrictive. (And yes, you still need to walk around every couple of hours, even when you’re wearing these socks.)

What kind depends on you. If you’re suffering from back pain, you might consider a lumbar support pillow—you know, the kind you slip onto an office chair. Others might prefer a neck-support pillow or a moldable pillow, which you can squish any which way until you feel comfortable. Clark says she was comfy with just a pillow from home.

5. Pregnancy Support Belt

If you’ve got a big-time belly, these belly bands can provide support, whether you’re racing from gate to gate at the airport or trying to get comfortable in your seat, Clark says.

6. Panty Liners and an Extra Panty

We don’t have to remind you that pregnancy can bring along more discharge than usual. An extra pair of underwear and a good stash of liners can keep you feeling a teensy bit fresher than you would otherwise.

7. Reflux Meds

If you’re experiencing GI troubles, you’re more likely to suffer from them while traveling, so be sure to pack whatever you’ve been taking at home. (By the way, remember to grab your prenatal vitamins when traveling too.)

You’re shivering one moment but raging hot the next. Dress in layers (complete with a tank top as your base layer) and don’t leave home without this handy cover-up, which also doubles as a blanket. Bring it in a neutral color and it’ll work as an extremely versatile accessory too.

Cravings don’t stop just because you’re thousands of feet up in the air, and those tiny pretzel packets won’t cut it. Spare yourself the misery and keep a stash of your favorites on your person at all times. (High-protein picks keep cravings in check—anything with peanut butter or full-on nuts is a good bet.)

Obviously. Grab a bottle size that’s appropriate for the duration of your trip—plus an extra. “You never know if you’ll end up with delays,” says Clark, who prefers to bring her own bottle. “I like to see where my water comes from,” she says. If you end up having to ask your flight attendant for water, specify that you want “water from a bottle,” she adds.

Travel During Pregnancy

As long as there are no identified complications or concerns with your pregnancy, it is generally safe to travel during your pregnancy. The ideal time to travel during pregnancy is the second trimester .  In most cases, you are past the morning sickness of the first trimester and several weeks from the third stage of pregnancy when you are more easily fatigued .

Is it safe to travel during pregnancy?

Traveling by air is considered safe for women while they are pregnant; however, the following ideas might make your trip safer and more comfortable.

  • Most airlines allow pregnant women to travel through their eighth month. Traveling during the ninth month is usually allowed if there is permission from your health care provider.
  • Most airlines have narrow aisles and smaller bathrooms, which makes it more challenging to walk and more uncomfortable when using the restroom. Because of potential turbulence that could shake the plane, make sure you are holding on to the seatbacks while navigating the aisle.
  • You may want to choose an aisle seat which will allow you to get up more easily to reach the restroom or just to stretch your legs and back.
  • Travel on major airlines with pressurized cabins and avoid smaller private planes. If you must ride in smaller planes, avoid altitudes above 7,000 feet.
  • Although doubtful, the risk of DVT can be further reduced by wearing compression stockings.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the International Air Travel Association recommend that expecting mothers in an uncomplicated pregnancy avoid travel from the 37th week of pregnancy through birth. Avoiding travel from 32 weeks through birth is recommended for women who have complicated pregnancies with risk factors for premature labor, such as mothers carrying multiples.

Risk factors that warrant travel considerations include the following:

  • Severe anemia
  • Cardiac disease
  • Respiratory disease
  • Recent hemorrhage
  • Current or recent bone fractures

Traveling by Sea During Pregnancy

Traveling by sea is generally safe for women while they are pregnant; the motion of the boat may accentuate any morning sickness or make you feel nauseous all over again. There are a few considerations to make your trip safer and more comfortable:

  • Check with the cruise line to ensure that there is a health care provider on board in case there are any pregnancy complications .
  • Review the route and port-of-calls to identify if there is access to any medical facilities if needed.
  • Make sure any medications for seasickness are approved for women who are pregnant and that there is no risk to the developing baby.
  • Seasickness bands use acupressure points to help prevent upset stomach and maybe a good alternative to medication.

International Travel During Pregnancy

Traveling overseas has the same considerations that local or domestic travel has, but it also has additional concerns that you need to know about before making an international trip. The information below is provided to help you assess whether an international trip is good for you at this time:

  • It is important to talk with your health care provider before you take a trip internationally to discuss safety factors for you and your baby.
  • Discuss immunizations with your health care provider and carry a copy of your health records with you.
  • With international travel, you may be exposed to a disease that is rare here in the United States but is common in the country you visit.
  • Contact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at (800) 311-3435 or visit their website at www.cdc.gov to receive safety information along with immunization facts related to your travels.
  • Diarrhea is a common concern when traveling overseas because you may not be used to the germs and organisms found in the food and water of other countries. This can lead to a problem of dehydration .

Here are some tips to avoid diarrhea and help keep you safe:

  • Drink plenty of bottled water
  • Used canned juices or soft drinks as alternatives
  • Make sure the milk is pasteurized
  • Avoid fresh fruits and vegetables unless they have been cooked or can be peeled (such as an orange or a banana)
  • Make certain that all meat and fish has been cooked completely; if you are unsure, do not eat it

Travel Tips During Pregnancy

Whether you are going by car, bus, or train, it is generally safe to travel while you are pregnant; however, there are some things to consider that could make your trip safer and more comfortable.

  • It is essential to buckle-up every time you ride in a car. Make sure that you use both the lap and shoulder belts for the best protection of you and your baby.
  • Keep the airbags turned on. The safety benefits of the airbag outweigh any potential risk to you and your baby.
  • Buses tend to have narrow aisles and small restrooms. This mode of transportation can be more challenging.  The safest thing is to remain seated while the bus is moving. If you must use the restroom, make sure to hold on to the rail or seats to keep your balance.
  • Trains usually have more room to navigate and walk. The restrooms are usually small. It is essential to hold on to rails or seat backs while the train is moving.
  • Try to limit the amount of time you are cooped up in the car, bus, or train. Keep travel time around five to six hours.
  • Use rest stops to take short walks and to do stretches to keep the blood circulating.
  • Dress comfortably in loose cotton clothing and wear comfortable shoes.
  • Take your favorite pillow.
  • Plan for plenty of rest stops, restroom breaks and stretches.
  • Carry snack foods with you.
  • If you are traveling any distance, make sure to carry a copy of your prenatal records.
  • Enjoy the trip.

Wrist bands for motion sickness: Do they work?

By Robert A. Fried, MD Jun 08, 2022 • 4 min

Motion sickness is a common ailment that can cause bothersome symptoms when traveling by car, air or sea. Many people are now exploring natural remedies for symptoms of motion sickness. Anti-nausea bands offer a natural alternative to medications.

What is an anti-nausea band?

An anti-nausea band is a band that usually has a small, round plastic button. These bands are designed to be worn around the wrists, close to the creases between the end of the forearm and the beginning of the hand, with the button pressing against the skin on the underside of each wrist. Anti-nausea wrist bands are also known by other names, such as motion sickness bracelets, sea sickness bands, travel bands and motion sickness wrist bands.

How do motion sickness wrist bands work?

The round button on the wrist band presses on an acupressure point that, according to traditional Chinese medicine, can relieve nausea and vomiting, regardless of the cause. You can also choose to press on the specific point for 2–3 minutes with your thumb.

Do wrist bands for nausea work?

The efficacy of wrist bands for motion sickness is still unclear. Some scientific research studies have investigated whether acupressure helps with nausea and vomiting. More research is needed to understand if using wrist bands for nausea is as effective as standard anti-nausea drugs.

Because many pregnant women prefer nondrug alternatives to manage minor health concerns, there has been interest in the use of nausea bracelets during pregnancy . Although some research indicates that acupressure doesn't help with morning sickness, some women report anti-nausea wrist bands to be helpful.

Are there side effects of using motion sickness wrist bands?

Side effects associated with motion sickness bands are generally considered to be mild. Local skin reactions, mild discomfort and swollen wrists have been reported in some studies. Follow the product instructions carefully and monitor for any signs of redness or skin breakdown near the wristband. If any skin irritation, pain or swelling occurs, remove the bands immediately.

Acupressure, either done by your own hands or with the help of wrist bands, may or may not help with various kinds of nausea. There are no known risks of trying wrist bands for nausea associated with motion sickness, pregnancy and chemotherapy.

It's important to talk with your healthcare provider before using over the counter motion sickness medication or alternative or complementary treatments, such as wrist bands for motion sickness.

TravaCalm Travel Band

TravaCalm Travel Band provides drug-free relief of nausea due to motion, pregnancy, anaesthesia & chemotherapy. It uses the science of acupressure over the Nei-Kuan point to block nausea messages travelling to the brain. The bands are washable and reusable.

Suitable for adults, pregnant women & children over 3 years of age.

travel bands pregnancy

The TravaCalm Travel Band operates by exerting pressure on the Nei-Kuan (acupressure) point on each wrist. To find your Nei-Kuan point, place your middle three fingers on the inside of your wrist with the edge of the third finger just below the first wrist crease.

The Nei-Kuan point is located underneath your first finger in between the two wrist (flexor) tendons (A) . Position the button facing inward over the Nei-Kuan point (B) . Repeat the process for the other wrist. Gently place the TravaCalm Travel Band onto wrists. Be careful not to “snap” the elastic band in place.

One band must be worn on each wrist to be effective. Effectiveness may vary with individual patient characteristics. It may take up to five minutes to become effective, but usually lasts as long as you wear the bands. For better results put bands on before starting travel.

The 7 Best Nausea Bands For Pregnancy, According To Experts

We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.

Women wearing Nausea Bands

If you’re one of the 70% to 80% of those who experience nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, you’re probably looking for a remedy that can start working immediately . Nausea bands stimulate the median nerve on your wrist to help relieve morning sickness (or all-day sickness, as is the case for some people), and they come in a design that fits your personal aesthetic . There are a variety of bands to help ease queasiness when you’re expecting , so Scary Mommy reached out to two board-certified OB-GYNs to learn what to look for when shopping for the best nausea bands for pregnancy.

The Experts

Based in New York, Dr. Kecia Gaither , MD, is a double board-certified physician in OB-GYN and maternal fetal medicine, currently serving as the director of perinatal services/director of maternal fetal medicine for NYC Health+ Hospitals/Lincoln in the Bronx. Additionally, Dr. Gaither is an associate professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill Cornell Medical College .

Dr. Jill Purdie , MD, is an Atlanta-based board-certified OB-GYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix Medical Group.

What To Consider When Shopping For Nausea Bands For Pregnancy

Acupressure-style nausea bands are often made from a blend of stretchy knitted materials such as polyester, cotton, and spandex, but you can also find options made from latex-free plastic or rubber. Knitted options are typically washable, while plastic and rubber bands are waterproof and may offer a more adjustable fit. Other acupressure bands have a more stylish appearance and look like jewelry, featuring a woven design or natural gemstones.

Another option on the market is battery-operated acustimulation bands that use low-voltage electrical pulses to prevent nausea. Dr. Gaither tells Scary Mommy, “Research has shown both to be efficacious to some patients suffering from protracted nausea and vomiting. If patients, however, have financial constraints, the acupressure bands are less expensive than the acustimulation bands.” Because acustimulation bands are not necessarily the more effective option, Dr. Purdie advises, “I would recommend an acupressure band over an acustimulation band based on the available studies at this time.” Ultimately, your choice depends on what’s most effective and convenient for you.

Whichever style you choose, the bands should be worn slightly below the wrists to stimulate the median nerve , which triggers “the P6 or Pericardium 6 acupressure point (Nei- Kuan or Nei-Guan) — felt to be an area that relieves nausea and vomiting,” Dr. Gaither explains.

And if you’re concerned about the safety of nausea bracelets, Dr. Purdie says there’s no reason to avoid them “unless you have a known skin sensitivity to any of the materials,” adding, “There is no fetal harm associated with their use.” However, you may want to consult your personal OB-GYN before using a nausea band, especially if your morning sickness is severe.

From single bands to value 10-packs, these are some of the best nausea bands for pregnancy to find some much-needed relief.

1. A Wildly Popular Pair Of Nausea Bands Clinically Proven To Work

With over 25,000 reviews, Sea-Band is a wildly popular nausea band for pregnancy.

  • Over 25,000 ratings and an overall 4.2-star rating
  • Washable and reusable
  • Reviewers report the bands can leave imprints on your wrists if worn too long
  • Only comes in one color and size

With more than 15,000 perfect five-star ratings, Sea-Bands are a popular choice when it comes to acupressure nausea bands. They feature knitted wristbands made of acrylic, nylon, and elastane with a plastic knob sewn inside that applies pressure to your P6 point. They’re one size fits most, with one reviewer reporting they could possibly fit wrists up to about 7 inches in circumference. They can also be washed and reused as many times as you need.

Sea-Bands are an FDA-cleared medical device, and according to this study in the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic & Neonatal Nursing , “ Sea-Bands with acupressure buttons are a noninvasive, inexpensive, safe, and effective treatment for the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy .” It’s recommended to wear both bands at the same time and to put them on whenever you feel nauseous.

Helpful Amazon review: “I am only 5 weeks pregnant and the morning sickness is all day sickness for me. If I don’t eat something every couple of hours the nausea and vomiting is unbearable. I retrieved these bands from the mail box at 4 am this morning and they worked almost instantly. [...] I took them off a couple of hours later to shower the nausea came back, so I put them back on and again it went away. It’s now 5:30 and I’ve felt fine all day. Idk how pregnant women do this without them.”

2. A 2-Pack Of Knitted Nausea Bands In Different Colors

This affordable two-pack of nausea bands for pregnancy includes bracelets in two different colors.

  • Over 8,500 ratings and more than 5,000 five-star reviews
  • Available in several color combinations
  • The bands only stretch up to 5.5 inches

When you need a backup pair of acupressure nausea bands for a great price, LYJEE has got you covered with this two-pack of washable and reusable bracelets. They have a knitted elastic wristband (the exact material isn’t listed) and a plastic knob design that hits your P6 point, and they’re available in a few color combinations. Plus, they start working quickly. One reviewer raved, “This worked within minutes and i've even been able to eat a whole meal!” The bands are one size fits most (they will stretch up to 5.5 inches around), and the brand recommends they should be tight and worn on both wrists in order to be effective.

Helpful Amazon review: “I have been so freaked out entering week 8 as with my other pregnancies that’s where nausea would start to really take off. Three days ago I could not keep anything down, the wrist bands arrived today I put both on and voila, I had my first decent size meal in weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it. I could literally cry I’m so happy. I hope they keep doing wonders for me, if not it was worth the price to just have this one day today nausea free and able to eat a real meal.”

3. The Waterproof Acupressure Nausea Bands Featured On S hark Tank

Psi nausea bands for pregnancy are waterproof, adjustable, and come in a variety of colors and desig...

  • Available in seven colors and designs
  • Waterproof, so they can be worn in the shower
  • Adjustable wrist strap
  • Latex and BPA-free
  • Some reviewers with sensitive skin report the plastic band irritated their wrist

Psi Bands were developed by a pregnant mom who was dealing with months of morning sickness and found relief with acupressure bands. They have been FDA-cleared for nausea relief and were even featured on Shark Tank . These waterproof plastic bands attach to both of your wrists like a watch, with an adjustable strap that can fit a wrist circumference up to 7.5 inches, and unlike knitted bands, can be made tighter if needed. The bump on the inside will stimulate the median nerve, cutting off the nausea signal between your brain and stomach, and you can put these on as soon as you start feeling queasy. “Can even get mistaken for bracelets,” reported one reviewer. However, some reviewers noted the plastic material can retain moisture and rub the skin, which may cause irritation.

Helpful Amazon review: “I'm 8 weeks pregnant, and I've been sick every waking moment for the past 2 weeks. No exaggeration - the only time I'm not nauseous is when I'm sleeping. I was so excited to try these, and they did not disappoint! On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the worst nausea I've ever felt), the PSI Bands took my nausea from a constant 7 or 8 down to a 4, and if I can eat often enough to keep food in my stomach, it goes down to about a 2 or a 3 (mild queasiness). So while they didn't take the nausea away completely, they made it tolerable (which is a huge relief after 2 straight weeks of feeling like crap). And they worked within minutes of putting them on.”

4. A Nausea Band That Uses Gel & Electrical Pulses

The Reliefband nausea band for pregnancy uses electrical pulses to help ease morning sickness.

  • Over 2,000 ratings and 4.1 stars overall
  • Adjustable nylon strap
  • Adjustable pulses
  • Gel and batteries included
  • Batteries need to be changed

If you’d like to give an acustimulation nausea band a try, the Reliefband Classic is a solid pick for pregnancy nausea. Start by spreading a drop of the conductivity gel on your wrist, about two fingers width from your wrist crease. Attach the band like a watch, adjust the nylon strap (for wrist sizes 4.5 to 9.25 inches), and press the main button. Then, you can adjust the sensitivity until you feel a tingling in your palm. The electric pulses will stimulate your median nerve, which can help stop the nausea signal between your brain and stomach and may provide you some relief. Reliefband is FDA-cleared and was found to be effective in 85% of users during the brand’s clinical trials. It comes with two hypoallergenic conductivity gel tubes, and the batteries are preinstalled; they just need to be replaced after 150 hours of continuous use.

Helpful Amazon review: “I have horrible morning sickness (more like all day sickness) with so much nausea. I couldn't take it anymore and ordered this band. This is AWESOME! it does not completely knock out the morning sickness, but I'd say it's 80% gone and has stopped my gagging and vomiting completely. I feel like a functioning human again and it is wonderful. I highly recommend this to expectant mothers!!!!”

5. A Budget-Friendly 10-Pack Of Colorful Bands

  • 10 pairs in 10 different colors
  • Budget-friendly
  • The band only stretches to 4.9 inches

A 10-pack of nausea bands means you’ll always have a pair on hand when you need it. The soft cotton knitted wristband is available in bright color combinations, or black and gray, and features a plastic knob that applies pressure to your P6 acupressure point. The band can stretch to a circumference of 4.9 inches — and it’s recommended that each wristband be tight to be effective. One pregnant reviewer called these bands a “game changer” for nausea.

Helpful Amazon review: “This is a must for anyone suffering from morning sickness, vertigo or nausea after chemo. I like all the color selections and always keep extras handy in my purse. [...] I’ve given out a pairs of these wrist bands to people who have felt faint or nauseous.”

6. Some Discreet Nausea Bands That Look Like Woven Bracelets

These nausea bands for pregnancy feature colorful patterns and look like woven bracelets.

  • Stylish look that doesn’t scream pregnancy
  • Available in four sizes
  • Not adjustable

When you want some relief for pregnancy nausea but also want to make it look like you’re just wearing bracelets, this two-pack of patterned acupressure wristbands is for you. They use a plastic knob to hit your P6 point, and you can get them wet and reuse them as much as you need. The spandex-polyester bands come in sizes extra-small to large that will fit wrists ranging from 5 to 8 inches in circumference, but you can’t adjust them to be tighter or looser, so just make sure you have the right size for the best fit.

Helpful Amazon review: “These look like bracelets, which makes for less awkward conversations, especially if you have early pregnancy morning sickness that you'd rather not discuss yet. I'd say they're worth it, for sure!”

7. These Adjustable Beaded Bracelets

This four-pack of anti-nausea bands for pregnancy look like beaded bracelets and cab be infused with...

  • Stylish look
  • Adjustable cord
  • Largest circumference on this list
  • Also available in elastic band options
  • Reviewers report the cord loosens easily

This four-pack of bands looks like typical beaded bracelets , but they’ll also apply pressure to your P6 acupressure point for nausea relief. They’re made of natural gemstones and a black lava rock stone that can be infused with essential oil — just keep in mind that essential oil shouldn’t be applied topically during pregnancy , so that’s an extra feature to use after you give birth. The brand recommends massaging the bead into your wrist for two to three minutes; if relief isn’t felt, you can try switching to the other wrist and repeating the massage.

Featured here is an adjustable cord that’s for wrists 6.5 to 9.4 inches, but reviewers report the cord can loosen easily and might need to be tied. If that’s a concern, there are non-adjustable elastic band options also available within the same listing.

Helpful Amazon review: “I don’t know if it actually works or if it’s psychological but my morning sickness has been gone since I started wearing this. Highly recommend if you are pregnant.”

Sickness travel bands - do they really work?

Fakebook · 31/03/2013 22:38

Today I've had enough of morning sickness. Without trying to sound sorry for myself I just want to eat something without it coming back up an hour later. I want to drink water or juice without it coming back up as acid. I've just told my DH he is going out first thing tomorrow morning to buy me anti sickness travel bands from Boots. Did these work for you? How quickly did they work and how long do they last? Could I wear them in the bath? TIA.

I tried them with my first pregnancy 3 years ago. They did nothing for me. Nothing really worked for me but I didn't actually vomit much. My morning sickness was more like a chronic hangover that lasted 4 months (5 this time). Bland food helped me a little. What got me through was knowing that m/s was a sign of a healthy pregnancy. I had 2 losses last year and didn't have symptoms with those pregnancies. So this time I was glad to be sick. I know it feels like it will last forever, but it is just a phase. Hang in there!

No didn't work for me either. Didn't even ease the symptoms, nothing did. I tried everything.

Worked for me. Not sure if it was a coincidence, but as soon as I started using them the all day nausea tailed off. I don't need them at all anymore. Make sure they are in the right position though.

Worked for me, I had nausea but no sickness, couldn't drive some days but with the bands it eased off. I bought boots ones, the were grey elastic cotton with a plastic ball to sit on the pressure point, so you could wear in bath they would just be annoyingly damp after! Or buy two pairs.

I felt that they have helped me a bit. It wasn't a magical cure but they were worth buying. I haven't been that good at wearing them though as I have worried they would "out" me at work - I have quite a few bits of 2/3 sleeve workwear.

Definitely helped me. Didn't take it away but was much worse if I didn't wear them. It's only £5 wasted if it doesn't work for you. You do need to make sure you get the position just right.

They helped me a little - I was nauseous for 4 mo tha but never sick. They were especially useful in situations that made me feel even worse than normal - travelling, early evening etc.

They helped me. I also had acupuncture which really helped

I thought they helped me a bit. but might have been a placebo effect.

I think they helped partially. Nausea eased but did not go away, may have been placebo effect but worth a go

Smile

Definitely give them a try - what have you got to lose? I have a long commute to work and get terrible nausea as a passenger so dh bought me some after his first experience of me as a pregnant passenger (poor love!). They've definitely helped when I'm in the car but not driving myself, although not sure how much difference they've made for when I'm driving. Left them on by accident one day but likewise not sure they made much difference. If motion sickness is making your morning sickness work then 100% yes, if not I'd still try them anyway!

Worked for me, BUT I recommend the Velcro adjustable ones not the cotton stretchy bands which did not go tight enough on me to be effective. I got aqua straps (?) from sainsburys on the travel gadget stand for about £3 or so. You could wear these in water as they are nylon type straps which would dry much quicker than the cotton ones. Make sure they are positioned correctly & apply enough pressure without being uncomfortable. I was VERY sceptical but driven to try them & noticed an improvement in hours. Placebo effect or not, don't care, for a couple of quid, it was worth it.

Didn't really help me I don't think but then I had very severe HG and not even all the anti sickness meds I had didn't work either. That said I never took them off just in case! I did however have acupuncture which uses the same pressure points and that helped (for a few hours!).

Didn't work for me, put them in the bin after 3 days [busad]

Ok DH just got back 15 mins ago as I was having my first puke of the day! I've had them on for about 10 mins now and can't really feel a difference except I want some orange juice. I'll truly find out if they work an hour later as everything comes back up as acid!

Some people say they do. It could be placebo, but that's better than nothing if you can make it work for you.

They worked for me, but they don't let you keep it a secret if you're wearing them at work for example!

Pregnancy Morning Sickness Bands: Do They Work?

Pregnancy brings with it several common signs. And morning sickness is usually at the top of the list. It can be one of the worst symptoms of pregnancy.

Most pregnant women experience morning sickness and there is no permanent solution. This leaves many pregnant women searching for alternatives to get relief.

A common and effective remedy is the use of morning sickness bands which are bracelets that help keep nausea away. Many people use it during pregnancy, traveling, or for vomiting post-surgery.

Speciallyme Antinausea bands for pregnancy

Especially if this is your first pregnancy, you are likely wondering, do these pregnancy morning sickness wrist bands really work?  Or are nausea relief bands safe for pregnancy?

Let's get into the science behind these bands. In this article, we will discuss how the morning sickness bands help to cure your sickness.

What Are Morning Sickness Bands?

Morning sickness bands look like a normal band in appearance. The knitted elastic fabric fits easily around your wrist.

These anti sickness bands are designed to put pressure on a certain area of your wrist to relieve nausea.

To do this a plastic knob is sewn on the inside of the band to provide the pressure.

Do Morning Sickness Bands Work?

The short answer is Yes. These small and somewhat inconsequential looking bands  do work   to relieve nauseous symptoms associated with morning sickness. The reason? SCIENCE. It’s based on the well-known eastern practice of acupressure .

The great part is they are completely safe and re-usable. These nausea relief bands work over and over again to relieve your symptoms without any of the potentially harmful side-effects you can encounter from taking prescribed medication.

What is acupressure and how does it work?

Acupressure is a gentle alternative therapy used to relieve symptoms of common problems. The therapy is quite safe as it is done without the use of any invasion methods. The therapist or professional simply uses their thumb and fingers to exert gentle pressure on a specific part of your body.

How To Wear Morning Sickness Bands (VERY IMPORTANT for EFFECTIVE RELIEF)

Place the elastic band with the important plastic ball on the inside of your arm above your wrist. The plastic ball is 3 finger-widths away from the top of your wrist. This positions the plastic ball over a known acupressure point on your wrist. Placement at this spot is very important .

how to wear morning sickness bands

This is known as the Pericardium 6 pressure point or the Nei Guan point in eastern cultures. Gentle pressure on this point has been scientifically proven to provide relief in a 2001 study of 60 pregnant women. This finding was proven even when accounting for the placebo effect and was ruled scientifically conclusive. In addition, the women with pressure applied to the Nei Guan points experienced lasting symptom relief as long as 14 days after the test.

Putting on your Anti Nausea Bands

This short video also shows you where to put the nausea bands on your arm.

How long can you wear morning sickness bands?

Morning sickness bands can be used as long as you feel comfortable with it or experience relief from nausea.

You can wear them for up to 48 hours straight before taking a break.

How long before I begin to feel relief from Morning sickness?

Generally, the bands start working within a few minutes of putting on.

To get the best results you can start wearing them before the onset of nausea, immediately after waking up or before breakfast.

Final Thoughts

Use these morning sickness bands as often as you like, we recommend one on each wrist, and they are great for general motion sickness or other situations that lead to nausea, even in kids.

What to know about pregnancy belly bands

  • Best lightweight pregnancy belly band :

Few moms are lucky enough to make it through pregnancy without experiencing a few discomforts: pressure on your bladder, lower back aches, and round ligament pain, to name a few. Luckily, there’s a garment that can help: a pregnancy belly band.

Also called maternity belly bands, maternity support belts, or maternity support girdles, pregnancy belly bands are structured garments that wrap around your midsection and fit beneath your bump to provide support for the back and lower abdomen during pregnancy, says California ob-gyn Michael Green, MD.  Opens a new window As the belly gets larger and heavier, Dr. Green explains, belly bands help an expecting mom maintain good posture and allow them to more comfortably engage in everyday activities.

Pregnancy belly bands can really help when you're carrying one (or more!) babies, particularly when you're engaged in moderate to strenuous physical activity, or late in your second or in the third trimester. In fact, research studies Opens a new window have found that maternity support belts are one of the most effective ways to alleviate pain associated with pregnancy Opens a new window in the lower back and pelvic region. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) also says that a maternity support belt can help reduce discomfort while exercising Opens a new window and ease back pain Opens a new window during pregnancy.

How we chose the best pregnancy belly bands

  • Are flexible
  • Wrap around the body and sit underneath your pregnant belly
  • Support the back and lower abdomen
  • Help expecting moms stay comfortable and maintain good posture
  • We talked with one mom on BabyCenter's editorial team who wore one of the belly bands on this list and told us about its comfort and how it relieved her pain.
  • Effective support
  • Value for the price
  • Adjustability

Why trust us?

Best pregnancy belly band overall, belly bandit 2-in-1 bandit.

Designed to be used during pregnancy and postpartum, this belly band is tough yet comfortable, and can really ease many different types of pain.

During pregnancy, this band fits right underneath your baby bump to lift and alleviate round ligament and joint pain; after pregnancy, it sits on your hips to help guide your hips and pelvis fall back into place. Many moms find this belly band more comfortable than other options, since it has a much smaller silhouette, which makes it easier to hide under clothing too.

"I found myself needing a belly band because of terrible pain around my hips, psoas, and crotch," says Alexandra Bisonó, Senior Art Director for Everyday Health Group. "Wearing it was extremely helpful and the support would truly take the pain away."

Alexandra adds that getting the belt on, off, and adjusted was easy. You simply wrap it around your midsection and secure it with the hook-and-loop fasteners. She adds that she got the most relief when wearing it while walking or grocery shopping, but “ wasn’t super comfortable wearing it while sitting.”

It’s also a HSA/FSA-approved medical device, so you may be able to get your insurance to cover the purchase. When you order your breast pump, check to see if the pump provider you're using also carries maternity support belts; many do, and they'll handle your insurance claim for you.

Heads up This garment isn’t quite as supportive as some other more full-coverage options.

Parents say “It made for an awesome recovery. I just got mine out of storage for this babe. I packed it in my hospital bag for my first and as soon as I was given the all clear a few hours later, I put it on. I had no sagging skin nor pooch like my friends. Could be genetics, but I definitely give credit to the Belly Bandit.”

  • Size range: XS-M (bellies 28-43 inches) and L-XL (44-57 inches)

Color options: 2

Best pregnancy belly band for back pain

Neotech care pregnancy support maternity belt.

It may look a bit more complex than other belly bands, but once you get the hang of it, this pregnancy wrap works wonders on back pain. This is due in part to a wide lower back support band that really works to transfer your belly weight to your hips.

The NeoTech is a little harder to put on than other belts, but again, it's worth it: You center the abdominal pad on your belly and wrap the attached belt around your back, fastening on your left side with hook-and-loop tabs. Next, you'll put the separate back support band (the striped part) behind you, and fasten on either side of the abdominal belt as tightly as you like with more hook-and-loop tabs. The final step is optional: a strap that goes over your belly and fastens on either side of the back support band. The learning curve is a little steep, but ultimately, moms say, they can minutely adjust this band for comfort or support, with fantastic results.

And although it’s a bit on the stiff side — that’s where the compression comes from, after all — moms say it’s highly breathable, so you won’t sweat all day. There’s plenty of room to adjust the belt to get it just right, too: The band stretches to fit bumps up to 60.5 inches.

Heads up The size of this band makes it difficult to hide under clothing.

Parents say "Neotech maternity belt, had a physical therapist recommend it to me and it’s great."

"I wore mine at work and when I tell you I haven’t had any pain whatsoever I didn’t think it would help but it actually does."

  • Size range: S-2XL (bellies 33-60.5 inches)
  • Color options: 3

Best pregnancy belly band for plus-size moms

Keababies ease maternity support belt.

For an amazingly reasonable price, this simple support belt provides a lot of ease, and fits moms of many sizes. The secret? The belt is gently contoured, with a narrower back and a wider front that provides relief for bigger bellies.

Moms-to-be say they love the fabric of KeaBabies’ belt, with the mesh being breathable and cooler than on other options. Many say that the fabric is soft and light enough to wear next to the skin (instead of always having to wear over clothing), which makes it easy to hide the belt. Moms also appreciate that this belt is less stiff than competitors' for added comfort. The sizing is generous too, accommodating bellies from 37.5 to 67 inches, which will fit a wide range of women.

As if the fit and fabric weren’t enough, the KeaBabies’ belt is easy to put on. Just wrap it underneath your belly and fasten it closed with one big solid hook-and-loop fastener over your right hip.

Heads up This option rides up higher on your belly, which some moms don't like.

Parents say "Prior to our trip I was having frequent pelvic floor/pubic symphysis pain with walking, and while I can't say for certain that the bands solved this, but I didn't have that pain at all on our trip."

"I work in kitchens and was miserable at the beginning of my second trimester until I got myself a belly band. I just wear it at work and I absolutely love it. It has helped tremendously."

  • Size range: M/L-2XL (bellies 37.5-67 inches)

Best pregnancy belly band for exercise

Gabrialla maternity support belt.

If you’re committed to getting your sweat on well into your second or even third trimester, Gabrialla’s belly band is a game-changer. Specifically designed for exercise, it features a contoured design that sits over the hips, right at the cusp of the lower back to lift your belly up, so you can move around with a little more ease. A nice bonus: It has a special pocket for a hot or cold pack, so you can further soothe any aches and pains, particularly after a workout.

Moms say that they got immediate pain relief from this belt, and that it works well to stabilize your core because it has a three places to adjust the fit and level of compression: you fasten the central hook-and-loop tab to get the belt on, then pull on tabs on each side to effortlessly get the belt as tight as you want. They also say that the taller sides and back of the band do a great job of supporting your midsection for exercises like yoga, walking, spinning, and running. On the other hand, this belt is on the bigger side, and tends to show under your clothes more often, though that may be less of a concern when you’re working up a sweat. Some of these belts have pink piping on the edges, which lends a little sporty flair, but again, may show through clothing.

Heads up Some moms-to-be find the material a bit itchy.

Parents say “I have a Gabriella belt that I started using a few weeks ago (23-24 weeks pregnant). It's really helped with the pelvic/hip pressure, and has also helped with cramping.”

  • Size range: S-2XL (bellies 30-56 inches)
  • Color options: 6

Most versatile pregnancy belly band

Frida mom pregnancy belly tape for pain + strain relief.

Though very different from a traditional belly band, Frida Mom Belly Support Tape allows you to fully customize the support you’re getting. You can wrap the tape all the way around your belly for a traditional belly-band effect, tape under your belly and up the sides of your body for concentrated belly support, or build yourself a wide band at the back that wraps around to the front to relieve lower-back aches.

The medical-grade adhesive is super durable and waterproof; it’ll last for up to three days, even in the shower, but won’t irritate sensitive skin. It feels more like fabric than the tape you use the wrap packages; moms say that they barely notice they have it on once they're taped up. They also love that it hides well under clothing, and that when they need more support, they can simply apply another strip, right where they want it.

Heads up There’s a bit of a learning curve, since you have to place the tape yourself unless you have a friend to help.

Parents say “My chiropractor does it for me every week. I love it. Makes a huge difference in my opinion. I thought my maternity band was uncomfortable, so this works way better in my opinion. If you're thinking about doing it, I recommend it.”

  • Size range: Unlimited (18 feet per roll)
  • Color options: 1

As you begin to shop for a maternity support belt, you’ll notice there are different kinds. Some are simply flexible, compressive bands that wrap around the midsection, but others are much more complex, offering both under- and over-belly support with Velcro. You may also see simple elastic bands, but these don't offer support, they’re simply meant to cover your stomach, so you can wear pants unbuttoned and stay in non-maternity clothes longer into your pregnancy.

True pregnancy belly bands are ideal for women who feel they need an extra layer of back and abdominal support while bearing a child, says Dr. Green. They are especially helpful if you’re particularly active: Maybe your job requires you to stand for longer periods of time, or maybe you favor exercise like running and walking.

“I recommend them during a woman’s most active waking hours, particularly during more strenuous activities,” Dr. Green says. The second trimester is a good time to start wearing a belly band, and many women use them all the way through a few weeks postpartum, Dr. Green says: “After giving birth, the abdominal muscles can become separated, and belly bands can be particularly helpful to women in this situation.”

It’s important to note, though: belly bands aren’t miracle-workers. While they can decrease discomfort, they can’t help prevent stretch marks or reshape your body, despite manufacturer claims, says Dr. Green.

There are also a few specific things to keep in mind to ensure you get the best pregnancy belly band for your needs:

  • Comfort: Though light, stretchy fabric may be the most comfortable, especially in warm weather, remember that your growing bump is heavy. To get adequate support, you’ll need something strong and durable. Unfortunately, these types of belly bands are usually less comfortable. But chances are you’ll only be wearing your support band for a few hours each day.
  • Closure: Some maternity support bands have clasps. Those without typically provide more compression and less support, making them more suitable for the postpartum period. If you’re looking for something that will really lift your belly up, taking pressure off your back, joints, and muscles, look for a band with clasps or Velcro.
  • Care: Not all belly bands are machine-washable, but when you’re a tired pregnant mom-to-be or an even more tired postpartum mom this is a highly necessary feature.
  • Color: Most bands come in two colors: "nude" for people who have light skin and black. Unfortunately, this leaves a large subset of people without an adequate choice, since the more the color of your band contrasts with your skin color, the more visible it tends to be under clothing.
  • Sizing: Sizing is not universal, so take a look at the size chart for any model you’re considering. And consider selecting a belly band with flexible sizing, especially if you’re relatively early on in your pregnancy, since your baby bump will continue to grow.

Best lightweight pregnancy belly band

Belly bandit belly boost pregnancy support band.

One of the few belly band options that fits over your belly rather than just underneath, this band looks and feels like a light pair of Spanx. It's stretchy and super comfortable, say moms-to-be, and compresses you all around rather than basically giving your belly a shelf to rest on. The result? This band is light and hides under clothing easily, yet provides enough support to help you walk, stand, or otherwise move around.

A ruched panel of the front grows with your belly, but the spandex-enhanced fabric rebounds nicely after being stretched, moms say, and the band doesn't grow saggy after taking you through your full pregnancy. Some say they were able to comfortably wear this for more than one pregnancy. Underneath the ruched panel, a thicker, less stretchy band of fabric provides more support where you need it.

Putting on this band isn't as easy as putting on belts with hook-and-loop closures.

Parents say

"I use Belly Bandit Belly Boost, ordered it from Amazon.com. These have the extra thick fabric along the bottom of the stomach for support."

"I use a combo of KT tape and the belly boost from belly bandit. It seems to be working. My back pain has been significantly less than past pregnancies. I always am stiff and sore first thing in the morning, but once I get moving and work the kinks out it seems to go away."

Size range: XS-XL (bellies 28-57)

Yale’s band couldn’t travel for March Madness, so Idaho’s band answered the call

travel bands pregnancy

To state the obvious: The NCAA Tournament is a massive operation. 67 games in 14 cities, hundreds of student athletes, and hundreds of thousands of fans all zig-zagging across the nation for a month to crown one winner. But behind the scenes and often off screen are thousands of more supporting cast members that make March Madness the best postseason in American sports. From the arena crew that prepare the building and keep it humming on game day, to the team trainers that keep the athletes in peak health to compete.

As the buzzer sounded in Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday and Yale’s August Mahoney leapt onto the scorers table to celebrate the 13-seed Bulldogs upsetting 4-seed Auburn, the Yale band tore through a rendition of their fight song “Bulldog.” It wasn’t until after the game that many found out the truth: the musicians who just rallied the Ivy League champions to arguably their biggest win in school history were actually from the University of Idaho.

The call came to Idaho’s band director Spencer Martin on Selection Sunday. Yale had double booked their band – the Bulldogs only qualified for the tournament thanks to a bit of March magic in the Ivy League championship game. As Idaho was the host school for the Spokane games, they were asked to step in. “It was the perfect storm because we had just gotten back from the Big Sky tournament in Boise where we supported our teams,” Martin told SB Nation “I said, ‘I think we can do it.’ And so I just reached out to [the band]. There were 29 of them that were available.”

Idaho hasn’t reached the men’s NCAA Tournament in 34 years, and the women’s team has only qualified three times in the last 40. For most in the Vandal band, this was their only opportunity to see March Madness up close. “I saw the email with the Google Doc being like, ‘Hey, sign up for this,’” said tenor saxophone player Mysti Smith, “and I was like ‘Yes! I want to go travel again.’ I love traveling with the band.”

The Vandals (or Vandogs as they started calling themselves) learned the Yale fight song an hour before they boarded the bus up to Spokane on game day. The rest of their repertoire—pumping their instruments like weights while yelling “Get swole!” and singing the entirety of the SpongeBob SquarePants theme during opponent free throws—that was all Idaho. “We’ve been sneakily weaving in many Vandal things and we just change it to Bulldogs or we do some bow-wowing and things like that,” said Martin.

Then came the upset: behind a massive 28-point game from junior John Poulakidas, Yale took down a potential title contender in Auburn. A frantic final possession saw the Tigers get four opportunities to tie or win, but Yale prevailed to earn just their second NCAA Tournament win in school history and their biggest upset. “My first reaction was I better count off this fight song real fast,” said Martin “It was just amazing. It was just surreal.” After the game, Yale head coach James Jones acknowledged the effect the band had on the game: “Having that atmosphere and people coming out to support us, there’s nothing better than that, and we can’t appreciate them more than to be Bulldog fans.”

Asked if the U of I band had plans to accompany Yale to the Sweet Sixteen if they were to defeat San Diego State, Spencer said their residency was ending in Spokane: “Our goal is to win, to not only send the team to the Sweet Sixteen, but so that we can send the Yale Band to the Sweet Sixteen so that they can experience this as well.”

In the end, Yale couldn’t keep the magic going and fell to last year’s national title runner-up Aztecs 85-57. But for Mysti Smith and the rest of the Vandal band, getting to be honorary Ivy Leaguers for a weekend was the experience of a lifetime: “It’s been really exciting and also a little terrifying, because we’re in the public eye. This has never happened to me before. It’s just really fun.”

What the data says about abortion in the u.s..

Pew Research Center has conducted many surveys about abortion over the years, providing a lens into Americans’ views on whether the procedure should be legal, among a host of other questions.

In a  Center survey  conducted nearly a year after the Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision that  ended the constitutional right to abortion , 62% of U.S. adults said the practice should be legal in all or most cases, while 36% said it should be illegal in all or most cases. Another survey conducted a few months before the decision showed that relatively few Americans take an absolutist view on the issue .

Find answers to common questions about abortion in America, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, which have tracked these patterns for several decades:

How many abortions are there in the U.S. each year?

How has the number of abortions in the u.s. changed over time, what is the abortion rate among women in the u.s. how has it changed over time, what are the most common types of abortion, how many abortion providers are there in the u.s., and how has that number changed, what percentage of abortions are for women who live in a different state from the abortion provider, what are the demographics of women who have had abortions, when during pregnancy do most abortions occur, how often are there medical complications from abortion.

This compilation of data on abortion in the United States draws mainly from two sources: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, both of which have regularly compiled national abortion data for approximately half a century, and which collect their data in different ways.

The CDC data that is highlighted in this post comes from the agency’s “abortion surveillance” reports, which have been published annually since 1974 (and which have included data from 1969). Its figures from 1973 through 1996 include data from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and New York City – 52 “reporting areas” in all. Since 1997, the CDC’s totals have lacked data from some states (most notably California) for the years that those states did not report data to the agency. The four reporting areas that did not submit data to the CDC in 2021 – California, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey – accounted for approximately 25% of all legal induced abortions in the U.S. in 2020, according to Guttmacher’s data. Most states, though,  do  have data in the reports, and the figures for the vast majority of them came from each state’s central health agency, while for some states, the figures came from hospitals and other medical facilities.

Discussion of CDC abortion data involving women’s state of residence, marital status, race, ethnicity, age, abortion history and the number of previous live births excludes the low share of abortions where that information was not supplied. Read the methodology for the CDC’s latest abortion surveillance report , which includes data from 2021, for more details. Previous reports can be found at  stacks.cdc.gov  by entering “abortion surveillance” into the search box.

For the numbers of deaths caused by induced abortions in 1963 and 1965, this analysis looks at reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. In computing those figures, we excluded abortions listed in the report under the categories “spontaneous or unspecified” or as “other.” (“Spontaneous abortion” is another way of referring to miscarriages.)

Guttmacher data in this post comes from national surveys of abortion providers that Guttmacher has conducted 19 times since 1973. Guttmacher compiles its figures after contacting every known provider of abortions – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, and it provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond to its inquiries. (In 2020, the last year for which it has released data on the number of abortions in the U.S., it used estimates for 12% of abortions.) For most of the 2000s, Guttmacher has conducted these national surveys every three years, each time getting abortion data for the prior two years. For each interim year, Guttmacher has calculated estimates based on trends from its own figures and from other data.

The latest full summary of Guttmacher data came in the institute’s report titled “Abortion Incidence and Service Availability in the United States, 2020.” It includes figures for 2020 and 2019 and estimates for 2018. The report includes a methods section.

In addition, this post uses data from StatPearls, an online health care resource, on complications from abortion.

An exact answer is hard to come by. The CDC and the Guttmacher Institute have each tried to measure this for around half a century, but they use different methods and publish different figures.

The last year for which the CDC reported a yearly national total for abortions is 2021. It found there were 625,978 abortions in the District of Columbia and the 46 states with available data that year, up from 597,355 in those states and D.C. in 2020. The corresponding figure for 2019 was 607,720.

The last year for which Guttmacher reported a yearly national total was 2020. It said there were 930,160 abortions that year in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, compared with 916,460 in 2019.

  • How the CDC gets its data: It compiles figures that are voluntarily reported by states’ central health agencies, including separate figures for New York City and the District of Columbia. Its latest totals do not include figures from California, Maryland, New Hampshire or New Jersey, which did not report data to the CDC. ( Read the methodology from the latest CDC report .)
  • How Guttmacher gets its data: It compiles its figures after contacting every known abortion provider – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, then provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond. Guttmacher’s figures are higher than the CDC’s in part because they include data (and in some instances, estimates) from all 50 states. ( Read the institute’s latest full report and methodology .)

While the Guttmacher Institute supports abortion rights, its empirical data on abortions in the U.S. has been widely cited by  groups  and  publications  across the political spectrum, including by a  number of those  that  disagree with its positions .

These estimates from Guttmacher and the CDC are results of multiyear efforts to collect data on abortion across the U.S. Last year, Guttmacher also began publishing less precise estimates every few months , based on a much smaller sample of providers.

The figures reported by these organizations include only legal induced abortions conducted by clinics, hospitals or physicians’ offices, or those that make use of abortion pills dispensed from certified facilities such as clinics or physicians’ offices. They do not account for the use of abortion pills that were obtained  outside of clinical settings .

A line chart showing the changing number of legal abortions in the U.S. since the 1970s.

The annual number of U.S. abortions rose for years after Roe v. Wade legalized the procedure in 1973, reaching its highest levels around the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. Since then, abortions have generally decreased at what a CDC analysis called  “a slow yet steady pace.”

Guttmacher says the number of abortions occurring in the U.S. in 2020 was 40% lower than it was in 1991. According to the CDC, the number was 36% lower in 2021 than in 1991, looking just at the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported both of those years.

(The corresponding line graph shows the long-term trend in the number of legal abortions reported by both organizations. To allow for consistent comparisons over time, the CDC figures in the chart have been adjusted to ensure that the same states are counted from one year to the next. Using that approach, the CDC figure for 2021 is 622,108 legal abortions.)

There have been occasional breaks in this long-term pattern of decline – during the middle of the first decade of the 2000s, and then again in the late 2010s. The CDC reported modest 1% and 2% increases in abortions in 2018 and 2019, and then, after a 2% decrease in 2020, a 5% increase in 2021. Guttmacher reported an 8% increase over the three-year period from 2017 to 2020.

As noted above, these figures do not include abortions that use pills obtained outside of clinical settings.

Guttmacher says that in 2020 there were 14.4 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. Its data shows that the rate of abortions among women has generally been declining in the U.S. since 1981, when it reported there were 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women in that age range.

The CDC says that in 2021, there were 11.6 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. (That figure excludes data from California, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.) Like Guttmacher’s data, the CDC’s figures also suggest a general decline in the abortion rate over time. In 1980, when the CDC reported on all 50 states and D.C., it said there were 25 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44.

That said, both Guttmacher and the CDC say there were slight increases in the rate of abortions during the late 2010s and early 2020s. Guttmacher says the abortion rate per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 rose from 13.5 in 2017 to 14.4 in 2020. The CDC says it rose from 11.2 per 1,000 in 2017 to 11.4 in 2019, before falling back to 11.1 in 2020 and then rising again to 11.6 in 2021. (The CDC’s figures for those years exclude data from California, D.C., Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.)

The CDC broadly divides abortions into two categories: surgical abortions and medication abortions, which involve pills. Since the Food and Drug Administration first approved abortion pills in 2000, their use has increased over time as a share of abortions nationally, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher.

The majority of abortions in the U.S. now involve pills, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. The CDC says 56% of U.S. abortions in 2021 involved pills, up from 53% in 2020 and 44% in 2019. Its figures for 2021 include the District of Columbia and 44 states that provided this data; its figures for 2020 include D.C. and 44 states (though not all of the same states as in 2021), and its figures for 2019 include D.C. and 45 states.

Guttmacher, which measures this every three years, says 53% of U.S. abortions involved pills in 2020, up from 39% in 2017.

Two pills commonly used together for medication abortions are mifepristone, which, taken first, blocks hormones that support a pregnancy, and misoprostol, which then causes the uterus to empty. According to the FDA, medication abortions are safe  until 10 weeks into pregnancy.

Surgical abortions conducted  during the first trimester  of pregnancy typically use a suction process, while the relatively few surgical abortions that occur  during the second trimester  of a pregnancy typically use a process called dilation and evacuation, according to the UCLA School of Medicine.

In 2020, there were 1,603 facilities in the U.S. that provided abortions,  according to Guttmacher . This included 807 clinics, 530 hospitals and 266 physicians’ offices.

A horizontal stacked bar chart showing the total number of abortion providers down since 1982.

While clinics make up half of the facilities that provide abortions, they are the sites where the vast majority (96%) of abortions are administered, either through procedures or the distribution of pills, according to Guttmacher’s 2020 data. (This includes 54% of abortions that are administered at specialized abortion clinics and 43% at nonspecialized clinics.) Hospitals made up 33% of the facilities that provided abortions in 2020 but accounted for only 3% of abortions that year, while just 1% of abortions were conducted by physicians’ offices.

Looking just at clinics – that is, the total number of specialized abortion clinics and nonspecialized clinics in the U.S. – Guttmacher found the total virtually unchanged between 2017 (808 clinics) and 2020 (807 clinics). However, there were regional differences. In the Midwest, the number of clinics that provide abortions increased by 11% during those years, and in the West by 6%. The number of clinics  decreased  during those years by 9% in the Northeast and 3% in the South.

The total number of abortion providers has declined dramatically since the 1980s. In 1982, according to Guttmacher, there were 2,908 facilities providing abortions in the U.S., including 789 clinics, 1,405 hospitals and 714 physicians’ offices.

The CDC does not track the number of abortion providers.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that provided abortion and residency information to the CDC in 2021, 10.9% of all abortions were performed on women known to live outside the state where the abortion occurred – slightly higher than the percentage in 2020 (9.7%). That year, D.C. and 46 states (though not the same ones as in 2021) reported abortion and residency data. (The total number of abortions used in these calculations included figures for women with both known and unknown residential status.)

The share of reported abortions performed on women outside their state of residence was much higher before the 1973 Roe decision that stopped states from banning abortion. In 1972, 41% of all abortions in D.C. and the 20 states that provided this information to the CDC that year were performed on women outside their state of residence. In 1973, the corresponding figure was 21% in the District of Columbia and the 41 states that provided this information, and in 1974 it was 11% in D.C. and the 43 states that provided data.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported age data to  the CDC in 2021, the majority of women who had abortions (57%) were in their 20s, while about three-in-ten (31%) were in their 30s. Teens ages 13 to 19 accounted for 8% of those who had abortions, while women ages 40 to 44 accounted for about 4%.

The vast majority of women who had abortions in 2021 were unmarried (87%), while married women accounted for 13%, according to  the CDC , which had data on this from 37 states.

A pie chart showing that, in 2021, majority of abortions were for women who had never had one before.

In the District of Columbia, New York City (but not the rest of New York) and the 31 states that reported racial and ethnic data on abortion to  the CDC , 42% of all women who had abortions in 2021 were non-Hispanic Black, while 30% were non-Hispanic White, 22% were Hispanic and 6% were of other races.

Looking at abortion rates among those ages 15 to 44, there were 28.6 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic Black women in 2021; 12.3 abortions per 1,000 Hispanic women; 6.4 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic White women; and 9.2 abortions per 1,000 women of other races, the  CDC reported  from those same 31 states, D.C. and New York City.

For 57% of U.S. women who had induced abortions in 2021, it was the first time they had ever had one,  according to the CDC.  For nearly a quarter (24%), it was their second abortion. For 11% of women who had an abortion that year, it was their third, and for 8% it was their fourth or more. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

A bar chart showing that most U.S. abortions in 2021 were for women who had previously given birth.

Nearly four-in-ten women who had abortions in 2021 (39%) had no previous live births at the time they had an abortion,  according to the CDC . Almost a quarter (24%) of women who had abortions in 2021 had one previous live birth, 20% had two previous live births, 10% had three, and 7% had four or more previous live births. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

The vast majority of abortions occur during the first trimester of a pregnancy. In 2021, 93% of abortions occurred during the first trimester – that is, at or before 13 weeks of gestation,  according to the CDC . An additional 6% occurred between 14 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, and about 1% were performed at 21 weeks or more of gestation. These CDC figures include data from 40 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

About 2% of all abortions in the U.S. involve some type of complication for the woman , according to an article in StatPearls, an online health care resource. “Most complications are considered minor such as pain, bleeding, infection and post-anesthesia complications,” according to the article.

The CDC calculates  case-fatality rates for women from induced abortions – that is, how many women die from abortion-related complications, for every 100,000 legal abortions that occur in the U.S .  The rate was lowest during the most recent period examined by the agency (2013 to 2020), when there were 0.45 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. The case-fatality rate reported by the CDC was highest during the first period examined by the agency (1973 to 1977), when it was 2.09 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. During the five-year periods in between, the figure ranged from 0.52 (from 1993 to 1997) to 0.78 (from 1978 to 1982).

The CDC calculates death rates by five-year and seven-year periods because of year-to-year fluctuation in the numbers and due to the relatively low number of women who die from legal induced abortions.

In 2020, the last year for which the CDC has information , six women in the U.S. died due to complications from induced abortions. Four women died in this way in 2019, two in 2018, and three in 2017. (These deaths all followed legal abortions.) Since 1990, the annual number of deaths among women due to legal induced abortion has ranged from two to 12.

The annual number of reported deaths from induced abortions (legal and illegal) tended to be higher in the 1980s, when it ranged from nine to 16, and from 1972 to 1979, when it ranged from 13 to 63. One driver of the decline was the drop in deaths from illegal abortions. There were 39 deaths from illegal abortions in 1972, the last full year before Roe v. Wade. The total fell to 19 in 1973 and to single digits or zero every year after that. (The number of deaths from legal abortions has also declined since then, though with some slight variation over time.)

The number of deaths from induced abortions was considerably higher in the 1960s than afterward. For instance, there were 119 deaths from induced abortions in  1963  and 99 in  1965 , according to reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. The CDC is a division of Health and Human Services.

News & features, winter center, why experts say to wear red and green during the solar eclipse.

Planning a trip to see April's total solar eclipse? Be sure to pack green and red clothes to see a strange phenomenon known as the Purkinje Effect.

By Brian Lada , AccuWeather meteorologist and staff writer

Published Mar 25, 2024 5:34 AM PDT | Updated Mar 25, 2024 5:40 AM PDT

Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. Nicole Bajic explains the science behind the Purkinje Effect and how you can experience it during the solar eclipse.

The upcoming total solar eclipse will have some unusual effects on animals and the weather , but people who are in the path of totality may experience a strange effect with their vision and not because they use the wrong eclipse glasses.

"There's this thing that happens in the eye as we transition from day to nighttime called dark adaptation, but it takes about 20 to 30 minutes," Dr. Nicole Bajic, an ophthalmologist at the Cleveland Clinic, told AccuWeather's Tony Laubach.

The quick flip from day to night has an unusual reaction on eyesight, specifically with how we perceive colors. This is known as the Purkinje Effect .

"Reds appear [sic] kind of dark and then the, the greens and blues will pop in contrast," Dr. Bajic said.

Reds and green will appear much differently during a total solar eclipse than any other day, as demonstrated by AccuWeather Meteorologist and Storm Chaser Tony Laubach. (AccuWeather)

Wearing a green or red shirt on the day of the eclipse could help people take notice of the Purkinje Effect. Additionally, having red and green objects nearby while watching the eclipse can also help folks take notice of the eclipse's side effect.

"If you have a lot of people around you, if you're, you're making this a group activity, you could have some people wear red, some people wear blues and greens," Dr. Bajic added.

The Purkinje Effect may also explain the viral debate from 2015 about a dress that to some appeared black and blue while others saw white and gold.

West Chester Porchfest returns May 18 and 74 bands are signed up for the 2024 edition

M ar. 26—WEST CHESTER — The borough's popular community music festival Porchfest returns on May 18. Seventy-four bands have signed up to perform so far.

"Green" porches will offer native plants and tips on creating your own native wildflower gardens, at the annual event sponsored by the West Chester Green Team.

Chris Pugliese, landscape architect and West Chester Green Team vice president, will host an information porch on Barnard Street with a green wagon of plants to share.

"The goal with the plant wagons is to educate our neighbors in West Chester area communities about the value of native gardens and landscapes and to share resources that will inspire and facilitate pesticide-free/herbicide-free native gardening/landscaping in yards," he said in a prepared statement. "We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment and more ecologically friendly places in the world."

Jean Gross, a local real estate agent, returns as a block organizer on Dean Street and will feature a porch of vintage clothing. The Green Team's vintage clothing swaps were begun by Aiden McFadden, East Bradford's soccer hero, who continues his work recycling clothing in Atlanta this spring.

Porchfest drew 6,000 visitors last May and many attendees were children. From face painting to Native American Lenape crafts to Taylor's Music's "zoo" of musical instruments, children could choose from a variety of activities in addition to listening to music.

Because of the high demand for children's activities last year, Porchfest is doubling its children's offerings from five to 10 options. A returning activity is the Lenape craft of journey stick-making. Last year 35 children created this craft with artist and West Chester Playschool co-founder Catherine Bosna.

Bosna returns to offer her workshop again this year on Union Street.

"The process of making journey sticks helps children recall their own journeys and become active learners and caretakers of the natural world," Bosna said.

A first-time presenter is children's author Sally Coveleskie, who wrote the "Henry, the Steinway" series of books. Coveleskie will read and sign copies of her books on Dean Street.

"As a children's author, I'm delighted to be part of Porchfest, where the magic of storytelling meets the joy of community," she said. "'Henry the Steinway and the Piano Recital' will bring the happiness of making music to children as they visit from porch to porch."

Another new activity, Celebration of Japan, offers origami paper crafts and Japanese snacks, kimono dressing opportunities and Japanese folk songs on Miner Street. Professors Fumiyo Kobayashi Batta of Widener University and Reiko Yoshida from Temple University will lead the activities.

"We are offering Japanese activities for the happiness of children. Folding origami frogs is fun and so is eating Japanese snacks," Yoshida said. "Porchfest is about building community and appreciating our diversity and having a great time in the process."

At Everhart Park, Diane Matthews School of Dance Arts will offer a class called Jazz — Hip Hop Dance Fusion with all ages welcome. Matthews returns with her students who are performing for the third year. She stated, "West Chester Dance Works/Diane Matthews School of Dance Arts will encourage and entertain audience members with performances from our five company groups representing approximately thirty dancers aged 9-70!"

This year's presentation will include styles ranging from lyrical to hip hop and will include an invitation to the audience to join in an open dance class/routine. This is the first time that Matthews will offer a dance class to the community at Porchfest.

A directory of all Porchfest activities will be available online by May 11 and at two locations on the day of the event. All are welcome to this free community event sponsored by the West Chester Green Team. For more information, please go to westchesterporchfest.com .
