The top 8 places to visit in the Dominican Republic

Rollicking turquoise waves, swaying palms and some of the finest rum on the planet – the Dominican Republic is just as famous for its natural beauty as it is for the abundant all-inclusive resorts that call the island home.

While there’s no shortage of places with swim-up bars built for serene weeks of lounging by the water, getting off hotel property is one of the best ways to truly take in the Dominican experience.

Spending some time in major cities – like Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros – is ideal for sampling the island culture, while getting off the beaten path and exploring less developed natural enclaves will reward you with waterfalls, whale watching and flora-filled rainforest hikes.

Traveling from region to region is fairly common – you’ll find Dominicans commuting for business, going to visit family in the country or navigating their way to school. Taxis can be found just about everywhere, and ride-sharing services are available in the three major cities: Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata . Public transportation in the form of bus service is both an affordable and memorable way to experience island life.

If you aren't sure where to begin exploring everything the Dominican Republic has to offer, here's a list of eight can't-miss sites.

1. Punta Cana is best for casinos and resort life

When most people think of the Dominican Republic, it’s Punta Cana  they have in mind. It’s the resort capital of the island, with an avalanche of all-inclusives catering to the bottomless-bar set.

But beyond the tourist-focused, theme park–level accommodations, Punta Cana plays host to beaches that rival some of the Caribbean 's best. Punta Cana’s 97km (60 miles) of coastline face both Atlantic and Caribbean waters, inviting you to hop on a catamaran, go deep-sea fishing or get lost in a book while baking under the warm sun.

The area also has a vibrant party scene that pulsates late into the night, thanks to the various resorts’ casinos and clubs.

2. Santo Domingo is best for culture buffs

The gritty hustle and bustle of city life collide with vibrant Dominican culture in the island’s capital (“El Capital”), Santo Domingo . It’s one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities, making it ideal for history aficionados looking to explore colonial-era architecture and take a deep dive into the country’s past.

You'll find the Zona Colonial in the city's center, which the island's oldest church, European fortress, monastery, university and hospital all call home. But step outside the cobblestone streets of the Zona, and a metropolitan joyride awaits, with elegant restaurants, raucous nightclubs and plenty of cultural institutions to add to your itinerary.

Reserve a table at the elegant El Mesón de la Cava for dinner in an ancient Taino cave, and afterward, hit the edgy, strobe-lit club  Jet Set ;  Onno’s , a local bar chain, is also a popular spot for a casual night of beer and cocktails.

3. Samaná is best for whale watching

The Samaná Peninsula is where the unspoiled natural beauty of the Dominican Republic mingles with friendly small-town sensibilities – a stark contrast to the glitzy resorts of Punta Cana and the bustling grind of Santo Domingo.

The capital of this peninsular province is the eponymous Samaná, located in northern Samaná Bay. Eco-tourism is popular here, with one major star attraction: whales. The best time to go is between January and March, when thousands of humpback whales descend upon the bay to give birth to their calves.

El Museo de las Ballenas (Whale Museum) in the neighboring town of Salinas is an attraction in its own right, with guided tours of marine mammal exhibits, handcrafted souvenirs and a full 12m (40-ft) skeleton of a humpback whale found along the rocky coastline between Las Galeras and Santa Bárbara de Samaná in 1993.

4. Sosúa is best for late-night partying

By day, Sosúa is your typical sleepy beach town – large swaths of sandy shores gently lapped by the Atlantic’s cerulean waves. It’s also the island’s dairy and cheese capital, courtesy of a 1938 presidential decree that allowed 100,000 Jewish refugees to settle in the area.

Some 800 people took the offer and launched a dairy and cheese factory, many of whose products you can purchase today.

While this all seems quite bucolic and mellow, Sosúa by night is an entirely different beast. After dark, the main strip (Calle Pedro Clisante) closes off to traffic, and revelers spill out onto the streets from the resident bars, lounges and nightclubs,  many of which feature local live music, including the Blue Ice Piano Bar and the popular Jolly Roger .

But a word of caution: the area is also known for sex tourism. Dominican and Haitian sex workers are known to approach and proposition tourists in the area, so practice a fair amount of caution.

The 12 best beaches in the Dominican Republic

5. Cabarete is best for thrill seekers

Sure, sipping cocktails by the beach is nice. But there’s only so much relaxing you can do, right? When you’re ready to shift your vacation into high gear , set your coordinates for Cabarete , a beach town located on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic.

Founded in 1835 by a British merchant and former enslaver, Cabarete is now an adrenaline junkie’s dream, a haven for kayakers, snorkelers and wind and kite surfers (several international competitions are hosted here). It’s also a popular spot for avid surfers, thanks to some of the best winds and tides in the Caribbean.

A woman standing in front of the cascading El Limón waterfall

6. El Limón waterfall is the perfect adventurous hike

Tighten your shoelaces and summon your balance – the 2.4km (1.5-mile) trail to get to  Cascada El Limón  is mostly wet and rocky terrain that visitors traverse on horseback. But it can also be accessed by foot – you’ll cross rivers and hop over muddy rocks to make it to your destination, so be sure to pack some rubber footwear.

After a 30 to 60-minute walk or horseback ride from the small town of El Limón, you’ll arrive at your destination – a spectacular 46m (150-ft) waterfall that flows into the cool waters of an expansive swimming hole. You can book a tour with one of the companies in Las Terrenas , a 30-minute drive from El Limón; the excursion typically includes a guide, horse and lunch.

7. Bayahibe is best for scuba diving

Situated on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic, Bayahibe is a former fishing village turned quiet resort town with access to some of the island’s most lively (and spectacular) beaches.

Just a few miles from town, you’ll find Bayahibe Beach , Dominicus Beach and boat launches that ferry you to Isla Saona , a national park that’s more booze-cruise layover than uninhabited sanctuary. Your best bet: stay in Bayahibe and take advantage of one of some 20 different dive sites in the area – it’s one of the most active areas for scuba divers in the country. If scuba diving isn’t in the cards, try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding or snorkeling the reefs instead.

8. Jarabacoa offers mountainous hikes and whitewater river rafting

Jarabacoa is the antithesis of the Dominican Republic’s oceanside towns. So when you’ve had your fill of lounging on the beach, head to Jarabacoa’s soaring peaks for verdant hikes, whitewater rafting on a roaring river and warm mugs of irresistible Dominican coffee on cool, misty mountain mornings.

Known as the City of Everlasting Spring, Jarabacoa has no shortage of activities: waterfall hikes, rope-bridge crossings over the Jimenoa River, plentiful rounds of golf and visits to the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria del Evangelio.

The area is also home to the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve , where more than 600 species of flora and fauna populate one of the most humid areas on the island (you can arrange a tour of the reserve before you visit). Jarabacao is also known for its Carnaval festivities in February – one of the most famous celebrations in the Dominican Republic.

More About Dominican Republic, Punta Cana

Located at the easternmost region of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana is a resort town known for its long stretch – 12 miles to be exact – of white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and pristine vegetation. Although it might be one of the lesser-known golfing destinations, don’t let that fool you, it is home to some of the most impressive championship golf courses around. To the north is Bávaro – the most developed section of Punta Cana, offering an additional 30 miles of white-sand beaches, which rank it among the longest and most continuous beaches in the Caribbean. Together, Punta Cana and Bávaro make up what is known as the Coconut Coast – where the wide beaches are lined with resorts, palm trees and coral reefs that make the water calm. To the south is La Romana, famous for its sugar cane plantation, and of course the dreamy white-sand beaches. It is an interesting place to snorkel among tropical marine life and shipwrecks just off the coast of Catalina Island.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory

Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

Top Experiences

Bávaro Beach : Stretching 30 miles, it is the most famous beach in Punta Cana and arguably one of the top beaches in the world with some sections as wide as 250 feet.

Golfing : There are 26 golf courses in the Dominican Republic, many of which reside within Punta Cana and the surrounding area, and come from the most acclaimed golf course architects, including Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio just to name a few.

Nightlife : Enjoy the sights, tastes and sounds, and dance all night to multiple genres of music throughout the city at various bars, casinos, disco-clubs and restaurants.

Zip Line : Taking you high above the jungle and measuring 2,500 feet in length, Punta Cana offers the longest zip line in the Dominican Republic.

20 Best Things to Do in the Dominican Republic

dominican republic island trips

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

One of the most geographically diverse countries in the Caribbean and the second largest in size, the Dominican Republic boasts an incredible range of scenery. Beyond its renowned beaches and over a thousand miles of coastline, you’ll find mountain ranges, offshore islands, lakes and waterfalls, offering plenty to do outdoors. As diverse as the landscape are the culture and history — from the Taino days to the Spanish colonial years with the arrival of enslaved Africans, and the influx of immigrants from Europe, Asia, the U.S., and the Middle East. These influences are reflected today in the people, the cuisine and the music. It's this incredible range in nature and culture is what makes the Dominican Republic one of the most interesting destinations to visit in the Caribbean.

Hit the Beaches

Millions of visitors flock to Punta Cana every year for some of the Dominican Republic’s longest white sand beaches, but there are other spectacular and less crowded coastlines to explore. Venture northeast to remote Las Terrenas and Las Galeras on the Samaná Peninsula for long palm-lined golden and white sands. If you’re into water sports, head to Puerto Plata’s surf-rich coastline and beach hop your way from Playa Dorada to Cabarete and Monte Cristi. Wherever you end up, you’re sure to find beachfront restaurants with fresh catch (in season), plenty of rum, and music.

Tour the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo

TripSavvy / Lara D'agostino

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial is recognized as the first European city built in the “New World,” serving as a model for the rest of the Americas. Today it’s a charming, culture-packed and lively neighborhood that’s a favorite of visitors and locals. Tour a number of important museums and colonial buildings, including the first fortress of the Americas, the first cathedral, the ruins of the first hospital, the first convent and the first university. Stroll the pedestrian Calle El Conde, lined with shops, outdoor sidewalk art, restaurants and cafes. Enjoy the outdoor parks and plazas, and dine under the stars at Pat’e Palo or Pura Tasca on Plaza España.

Taste Dominican Cuisine

Beyond the national dish – la bandera dominicana (a plate of rice and beans with stewed chicken and a side salad) – there are local specialties you should sample. Try mangú, a deliciously seasoned mound of mashed green plantains topped with sautéed red onions, for breakfast or sancocho, a hearty stew combining various meats and roots vegetables, served with a side of white rice and avocado slices. Desserts and salty snacks are popular as well, from yucca empanadas to coconut sweets.

In Santo Domingo, Villar Hermanos and Meson D’Bari are among the best Dominican restaurants , but you’ll also find local dishes in comedores or small local restaurants around the country.

Visit the Museums

 TripSavvy / Lara D'agostino

The country's museums shed an important light on the country’s fascinating history. Start in the Colonial City – tour the Alcazar de Colon, the former home of Diego Columbus turned museum, as well as the Museo de las Casas Reales. Continue to the Museo del Hombre Dominicano, the most comprehensive in the country, covers various eras starting with the origin of Dominicans to its present day culture and society. In Altos de Chavón, the Museo Arqueologico Regional Altos de Chavón boasts one of the most comprehensive collections of Taino artifacts and history.

Dance to Merengue and Bachata

Dance and music are an intrinsic part of Dominican culture. You can practice your merengue and bachata dance skills anywhere in the country, whether on the beach or at your resort’s nightclub, in local bars and at concerts. Live performances are also popular and an important part of the culture. In Santo Domingo, head to Jet Set Club for weekly concerts on Monday nights. In Puerto Plata, shows are held regularly at the Puerto Plata Amphitheatre.

Take the Cacao Trail

The Dominican Republic ranks among the top three largest exporters of cacao in the world. For a full experience of a cacao plantation and the bean to bar process, sign up for the Sendero del Cacao or the Cacao Trail Tour. Located in the province of San Francisco de Macorís, just over an hour north of Santo Domingo, you’ll experience a fully operating, family-owned cacao farm – you’ll hike the plantation, taste raw cacao, and tour the chocolate making facilities where you’ll make your own bar.

Catch a Baseball Game

The Dominican Republic counts the highest contribution of baseball players to US Major League Baseball. The passion for “play,” as it’s locally called, is just as strong at home. The Dominican Baseball League runs an annual baseball tournament from mid-October through January, and you can catch the games at any of the professional baseball stadiums around the country. Combined with on site music and food, you’ll get a solid glimpse of the locals’ passion and natural talent for baseball.

Visit the Offshore Islands

As if the mainland didn’t have enough beaches, the Dominican Republic counts a handful of offshore islands with spectacular white sand beaches. The most visited is Saona Island – part of the Cotubanamá National Park – for its breathtaking coastline and Caribbean turquoise pools. Off the coast of Samaná, Cayo Levantado’s beach is a perfect daytime escape, with restaurants on site. Off the coast of Puerto Plata, Cayo Arena is the tiniest offshore caye, its surrounding waters teeming with tropical fish.

Ride to Cable Car in Puerto Plata

One of the most unique activities in the Dominican Republic is Puerto Plata’s cable car ride or Teleférico , the only one operating in the Caribbean. It takes you soaring over 2,600 feet above Puerto Plata’s gorgeous Atlantic Ocean and hilly green landscape, from the city towards Mount Isabel. Once you reach the top, you’ll get off the cable car and see a giant Christ of the Redeemer Statue, similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro. After a few selfies, continue hiking towards the back of the statue, where you’ll find beautiful botanical gardens. Stroll at your leisure, and cool off afterwards at the on site cafe.

Experience Dominican Carnival

Carnival is a major part of Dominican culture. Based on folklore characters and tales, as well as syncretic religions, it’s an excellent time to glimpse the country’s diversity. Every Sunday during the month of February, you can experience a carnival parade in major towns and cities around the country. The most popular and widely attended parades take place in La Vega, Santiago and Puerto Plata. Carnival season closes with a final national parade on the first Sunday in March, on Santo Domingo’s seafront boulevard.

Conquer the 27 Damajagua Falls

Venture inland for adrenaline-pumping adventure at the Dominican Republic's most spectacular waterfalls: the 27 Charcos de Damajagua , in Puerto Plata. Its cascades and natural pools tumble down a series of canyons. You’ll hike, slide your way down, jump, and wade through beautiful azure and turquoise waters gushing over and around you.

Hike Pico Duarte, the Caribbean’s Highest Peak

siri bl [CC BY 2.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)]

Tucked in the heart of the country, Pico Duarte – part of the Jose Armando Bermudez National Park – is the tallest peak in the Caribbean, standing at 10,105 feet. The two- to three-day expedition will have you camping under the stars as you make your way to the summit at sunrise. Opt for Jarabacoa as your jump off point and relax in this cool mountain town before and after your adventure.

Go Humpback Whale Watching in the Bay of Samaná

Every year from mid-January through March, thousands of humpback whales make their way to the warm waters of the Bay of Samaná to mate and birth. Hop on a two-hour whale watching tour with marine biologist Kim Bed all’s Whale Samana – if you’re lucky, you’ll spot calves as well – after which you’ll head over to Cayo Levantado for lunch and an afternoon on the beach.

Hang Out at the Parks

Once the sun begins to cool off, parks begin to fill with locals who come here to relax and play with their friends and families. You’ll find a central park in almost every town you visit, whether beachside or inland. In Santo Domingo, visit the iconic Parque Colon, in the heart of the Colonial Zone, for a family-friendly atmosphere as well as surrounding restaurants. Nearby, Parque Duarte is a favorite of the LGBT community. In Puerto Plata, the Parque Central is one of the most attractive with its surrounding Victorian architecture.

Spot Crocodiles at Lake Enriquillo

Located in the remote southwest, Lake Enriquillo lies 60 feet below sea level, and is the largest lake in the Caribbean region. Part saline, part fresh water, its remarkable features attract the only population of American crocodiles in the DR. Hop on a boat tour led by a park ranger, and you’ll spot crocs of all sizes lurking beneath. On shore, you can’t miss seeing iguanas freely roaming the grounds.

Shop for Local Souvenirs

The Dominican Republic offers plenty of opportunities to shop items that are sourced and created locally. If you’re into precious stones, opt for larimar or amber jewelry pieces. Coffee, chocolate, and rum lovers will also find their bliss with homegrown varieties. Arts and crafts range from wood-carved decorations to oil paintings and the Dominican “faceless” dolls.

Get Social at the Colmado

The Dominican “colmado” is a corner mom and pop grocery store that doubles as a neighborhood bar. The colmado is affordable and ubiquitous in the country –you can find one on nearly every other corner, from the city to the smallest village. Order una fria or an ice-cold beer at the counter and grab a chair or two to enjoy outdoors while listening to music.

Savor the Coffee Culture

With coffee plantations around the country’s mountainous regions, it’s not hard to understand why coffee plays such an important part in Dominican culture. Enjoy a cafecito during the day, preferably while sitting outdoors and catching up with friends. If you’re not a coffee drinker, get a hot chocolate or a batida – a fresh fruit “milkshake” or smoothie. Sip, mingle and enjoy the fresh air.

Sample Rum and Cigars

The Dominican Republic is a top producer of rum and one of the largest exporters of premium cigars to the United States. Take a tour of La Aurora Cigar Factory in Santiago, where you’ll learn about the entire cigar making process. There are also cigar and rum bars around the country.

Visit Bahia de Las Aguilas

Lying on the southwest edge of the country, near the border with Haiti, this undeveloped and protected beach boasts five long miles of brilliant white sand and iridescent turquoise waters. The best way to enjoy it is on a boat cruise of the surrounding Bay of Eagles.

"As a sun-starved Northeasterner, I spend winters scheming getaways to destinations where sand and surf are the main attractions, and I only need to check my watch to confirm it’s wine o’clock somewhere. Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana, an all-inclusive located within Punta Cana’s private, 30,000-acre stretch of private shoreline, made for an enjoyable couples getaway in January 2022," said Travel + Leisure contributor Robin Catalano. "During the day I stuck mainly to Margaritaville’s corner of Juanillo Beach, and the markedly quieter adults-only section of the resort. I also made forays into the St. Somewhere Spa, where I indulged in hydrotherapy circuits followed by the polar plunge pool and sauna or a massage."

Courtesy of Karisma Hotels & Resorts

Live out your childhood dream of getting slimed at Nickelodeon Punta Cana. This all-inclusive resort on Uvero Alto beach leans into cartoons like Spongebob Squarepants and Paw Patrol, making it a fun, splashy getaway for families and kids at heart. "I'm a self-proclaimed Spongebob superfan, and I had a blast watching my favorite episodes in the open-air theater and sipping slime smoothies at the swim-up bar," said T+L contributor  Madeline Bilis  after a 2024 stay.

The resort counts 460 suites, though the property's true highlight is the  Pineapple Villa , a spacious 1,500-foot home with a fruit-shaped foyer that resembles Spongebob's underwater residence. Elsewhere, nine restaurants, three bars, and four pools make plenty of space for fun in the sun. Perhaps the best spot of all to catch rays (and get slimed) is at Aqua Nick, the on-site waterpark decked out with bright-orange water slides, water jets, fountains, a lazy river, and more.

Guests can enjoy all-inclusive meals and snacks at nine restaurants, nightly entertainment, live music, and 24-hour room service. Other activities include laser tag, volleyball, water aerobics, and tennis. Taxes, gratuities, Wi-Fi, and unlimited phone calls to the continental U.S. and Canada are also included.

"Making the most of this all-inclusive spot with glistening ocean vistas means making the most of the neighboring resorts. Translation: With a stay at Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana, you have access to the dining spots and facilities at neighboring Grand Bavaro and Grand Turquesa, too. So, pro-tip — after staying at the spot in September 2020 — dabble in ‘em all and don’t be bashful," recommends T+L contributor Jesse Scott.

The Level at Meliá Punta Cana Beach Resort, Punta Cana

While most all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic charge guests extra for spa treatments, this adults-only Meliá resort on Bavaro Beach has built them into a wellness-focused package. Guests who book The Level Wellness Suites can enjoy one spa treatment per day, aromatherapy, a vitamin C shower infuser, and a wellness concierge and app to help them reach their health goals. The Level guests can also access a private check-in area, VIP amenities, a private pool, premium brand drinks and snacks, and exclusive dining at Quimera Restaurant, in addition to the rest of the 287-room hotel's all-inclusive offerings.

"In September 2020 – off COVID’s peak and in major need of a wellness retreat - I landed on a stay at Meliá Punta Cana Beach," says Scott. "It brought me back to life and, for a solo or couple’s wellness adventure, it totally reinvigorates on a multitude of fronts. Built in 2019, the adults-only resort’s rooms are draped in white columns with tan and gold touches, with beachside suites coming at a premium. Speaking of premium, Meliá’s Level package is worth the upgrade and includes access to a private pool, lounge, and wellness ritual, among other perks."

Things To Do in the Dominican Republic

1. stay at a private island resort.

Located in Samaná Bay near both Los Haitises National Park and the nation’s best whale-watching spots, Cayo Levantado is a tiny island that boasts one of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic . With so much to offer travelers, it’s long been one of the most popular day trip spots in the country.

Cayo Levantado is well worth an addition to your itinerary, but an overnight stay at Cayo Levantado Resort is the only way to get the full experience. Resort guests have access to the whole island, including the beachfront that day trippers can’t reach, as well as an incredible host of amenities and activities that have made this one of the best resorts in the Dominican Republic.

We had an incredible experience staying at Cayo Levantado Resort and would return in a heartbeat. An incredible combination of personalized wellness offerings at the new Yubarta wellness space, along with great cuisine and beautiful scenery make it an unforgettable stay.

2. Yoga in Las Terrenas

Laid-back, lovely Las Terrenas is one of the best places to visit in the Dominican Republic for some serious rest and relaxation , with a small but growing yoga scene making it a popular destination for both yoga retreats and the growing number of digital nomads in the Dominican Republic .

Just about 15 minutes from Las Terrenas is Shiva’s Cave Yoga Studio , which offers retreats of various lengths. This studio is part of Monte Placido, which has its own villas for a dreamy yoga retreat from start to finish, complete with a front-row ocean view. Or, book with OndiYoga for individual and group classes.

3. Go Beach-Hopping

There are few islands in the Caribbean with such a diversity of different types of beaches, from tiny coves to long stretches of sugar-fine sand. The beaches in the Dominican Republic are truly a marvel.

For off-the-beaten-path bathes with few visitors to crowd out the spectacular scenery, you can’t get better than the beaches along the northern coast of the Samaná peninsula. Stay in Las Galeras and visit beaches like Rincón, Cosón, El Valle, and El Limón – the list goes on and on , making it the ultimate beach hopping beach destination.

Alternatively, enjoy an all-inclusive stay at a resort on the pristine beaches at Punta Cana or Cap Cana . Add in an excursion to Isla Saona or even Cayo Levantado to enjoy some of the other beautiful beach spots across the island.

4. Visit Monte Cristi

While the province of Monte Cristi and its eponymous capital are hardly among the most visited destinations in the Dominican Republic, visiting this beautiful destination should certainly be on your list of things to do in the Dominican Republic.

The small city of Monte Cristi is laid back and has plenty of historic gems. Here you’ll find the home of the Cuban independence leader Máximo Gomez who led the neighboring island’s independence struggle. The city is also a gateway for the beautiful Playa El Morro and bout tours to Cayo Siete Hermanos.

This province, located along the northwestern section of the country’s international border, is also home to Punta Rucia and Cayo Arena, both among the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic .

things to do in santo domingo

5. Explore Santo Domingo Zona Colonial

The capital of the Dominican Republic may not be as stunning as Old Havana, Cuba , but it boasts plenty of gorgeous historical landmarks, colonial churches, and winding cobblestone streets to make the city’s historical heart a must-visit for travelers.

I always love a good free walking tour as one of the best ways to experience a new city, perfect for connecting with locals and getting recommendations for things to do and places to eat. Civitatis organizes excellent free walking tours in cities around the world, including Santo Domingo – just make sure to book ahead to reserve your spot.

6. Eat Dominican Food

Dominican food is more than just rice and beans, though Dominicans certainly get this staple dish very right! Sampling favorite dishes like mangú , empanadas and pastelitos, and barbequed meats or guisado stews is among the best things to do in the Dominican Republic , no matter where your vacation takes you.

Skip the international foods and head straight for the local spots. One of the best ways to explore Dominican cuisine is by taking a foodie walking tour; in my experience, this is also a great way to connect with locals and get tons of recommendations , helping you decipher menus for the rest of your trip.

el limon waterfall

7. Swim Under El Limón Waterfall

Towering over the rainforest at around 170 feet, El Limón waterfall is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Dominican Republic. Visiting this impressive waterfall and floating in its natural swimming hole below are among the best things to do in the Dominican Republic for travelers in the Samaná province.

The journey through the rainforest to reach the waterfall is doable, just around 1.5 miles. Though guides at the beginning of the trail will convince you that you need to ride a horse, the walk is certainly doable for those even with a basic level of fitness. It can get muddy during the rainy season though, so keep this in mind.

El Limón is an easy day trip from almost anywhere in the Samaná province. You’ll also find some day trips in the area that offer stops at El Limón, like those visiting Cayo Levantado from Punta Cana, though make sure to check your itinerary for specifics.

8. Learn To Dance

The Dominican Republic is known for its revolutionary contributions to some of the world’s most popular dance and music traditions, including everything from salsa and merengue to bachata. This makes it a particularly fantastic place to learn how to dance.

You’ll find established dance schools and private teachers no matter where you travel in the county. Even if you’re a total beginner, taking a dance class can be a great way to meet locals, experience an important part of Dominican culture, and have fun while learning something new and different.

Local recommendations are best for specific dance experiences, so check with your hotel or tour guides for recommendations specific to the area of the Dominican Republic where you’ll be staying.

samana los haitises national park

9. Los Haitises National Park

Nestled along the shores of the Samaná Bay, Los Haitises National Park is packed with natural beauty and history, making this a popular day trip destination and one of the best things to do in the Dominican Republic.

While much of the national park is so lushly forested it isn’t accessible, many travelers explore the coastal areas of the park, where you’ll find age-old Taino cave paintings, untouched beaches, and colonies of birds , plus unique landforms called mogotes reminiscent of those found in Viñales Valley in Cuba .

You’ll find tours from basically every corner of the Dominican Republic, as it is such an impressive destination with so much to offer. Here are our recommendations:

  • Los Haitises Day Trip from Samaná
  • Los Haitises Day Trip from Punta Cana
  • Los Haitises Day Trip from Puerto Plata
  • Los Haitises Day Trip from Santo Domingo

Many trips include visits to Cayo Levantado as part of the excursion, making this a great way to see the national park and one of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic during one convenient day trip.

10. Ride a Cable Car Up Mt. Isabel de Torres

If summiting one of the Dominican Republic’s many peaks isn’t quite your idea of a relaxing way to travel, consider enjoying expansive mountaintop views by taking the cable car to the top of Mt. Isabel de Torres instead. With vistas stretching over all of Puerto Plata and across the ocean , this cable car ride is easily one of the best things to do in the Dominican Republic.

Be warned that the line for tickets to ride the cable car can get quite long when a cruise ship is in port, as the excursion tends to be a popular one with cruise ship passengers. If you’re staying in town, consider visiting when a ship isn’t in port to make the most of your time (or booking ahead as part of a city tour to have tickets reserved).

isla saona

11. Visit Isla Saona (Saona Island)

Isla Saona is more than just your standard (beautiful!) beach destination in the Dominican Republic: as part of the Parque Nacional del Este, this white-sand island off the southern coast of the Dominican Republic is truly pristine and protected.

Isla Saona’s beaches are so lovely and boast such impressive snorkeling and diving that they’re a popular day trip destination from resort towns around the entire country, including La Romana and Punta Cana.

Looking for day trips to Isla Saona? These are the options we recommend:

  • Isla Saona from Punta Cana
  • Isla Saona from La Romana

Even if your resort beach is beautiful, don’t count out a trip to Isla Saona! This island’s white sand beaches and impossibly-clear waters make it one of the most beautiful beach destinations in the Dominican Republic.

Don’t think about traveling without a good  VPN (Virtual Private Network) . Using a VPN while connecting to the internet is an easy way to keep your personal information safe from hackers and trackers.  We’ve used  NordVPN  for years and couldn’t recommend it more – it’s a must for safety online, at home or abroad.

12. Adventure Sports in Jarabacoa

Located in the lush, forested center of the country between Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros, the small town of Jarabacoa has the special distinction of being home to some of the most thrilling adventure sports activities in the country. White water rafting, canyoning, and even paragliding are all available here from local tour guides, drawing plenty of locals and international visitors alike.

Jarabacoa also has some really great hiking spots, including waterfall trails and lovely sections of forest with scenic views. It is also a starting point for the hike to the top of Pico Duarte.

13. Try Kite Surfing in Cabarete

For even more adventurous things to do in the Dominican Republic, head to the northern coast for a visit to Cabarete for the island’s most famous kite surfing at Kite Beach. Here you’ll find everything from lessons for first-timers to specialized experiences more tailored to expert kite surfers.

15. Swim in the Dominican Republic’s Cenotes

Popular Mexican destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula , like Tulum and Cancun, might be best known for their numerous impressive sinkholes called cenotes , but did you know that the Dominican Republic has plenty of these sinkholes as well? Visiting and swimming in the sinkholes hidden across the country is a highlight for many travelers and is considered among the best things to do in the Dominican Republic.

You’ll find cenotes all across the Dominican Republic, but Hoyo Azul and Hoyo del Salado, both located near Punta Cana, are some of the most popular destinations for travelers.

Many affordable day trips from Punta Cana include visits to these cenotes as part of the itinerary, making a visit quite easy ( our travel writer friend based in Punta Cana recommends this day trip: ATV, Cenotes, and Tastings Excursion from Punta Cana ).

Visitors can also spend the day at Scape Park , which is home to Hoyo Azul as well as ziplines and other adventurous activities to pass the day.

16. Take a Rum Tour

The Dominican Republic produces some of the world’s best rums, so no trip to the island is complete without a rum tasting, tour, or experience, whether it be an official one or simply at the bar of your hotel.

For a behind-the-scenes look at the history and creation of the country’s best rums, a visit to one of the country’s main distilleries is a must. The distilleries at Barceló, Brugal, Macorix, and Oliver are some of the best choices for tasting the best rums that the Dominican Republic has to offer, and all offer tours and tastings for travelers.

Rum Tours from Santo Domingo

The best distillery tour and tasting experience for travelers staying in Santo Domingo is at the distillery of the most famous rum brand in the Dominican Republic: Barceló. While the plant is located almost an hour outside the city, this hands-on experience is so worth it. Visitors MUST book ahead of time for the experience.

Book Here: Ron Barceló Factory Experience + Tasting

Rum Tours from Punta Cana

While Punta Cana doesn’t have any rum distilleries like Santo Domingo does, Oliver Rums does an incredible rum-tasting experience in Punta Cana that is the best you’ll find in the city. Though Oliver doesn’t have as much brand recognition as Barceló, they have even more premium rums and put on a great job with the tasting experience here.

17. Visit Cayo Arena

Located in the little-visited but fascinating Monte Cristi province in the western part of the country, the white sand island known as Cayo Arena boasts one of the most impressive beaches in the Dominican Republic .

  • La Sirena: This dive site offers incredible cave dives near Santo Domingo.
  • Punta Cana: For diving options near Punta Cana, consider exploring the Astron Shipwreck and diving at Isla Saona.

PADI’s guide to diving in the Dominican Republic recommends that beginner divers stick to spots on the southern coast (with fewer waves and calmer waters), leaving spots on the island’s northern coast to more experienced divers. However, each dive site is different and there are destinations worth exploring – no matter your level of experience – all around the country.

things to do in dominican republic

19. Spot Humpback Whales

Every year, Samaná Bay welcomes humpback whales who come to the region to give birth to their babies in the area’s warm, calm waters. This migratory pattern makes the Samaná Bay one of the best spots for whale watching in the Caribbean.

Whether you’re staying near Samaná or somewhere else in the Dominican Republic, it’s worth adding a whale-watching excursion to your itinerary – they’re some of the best things to do in the Dominican Republic, no matter where you’re based during your vacation. Here are some of the best whale-watching excursions:

  • Whale Watching Excursion from Samaná
  • Whale Watching Excursion from Punta Cana
  • Whale Watching Excursion from Puerto Plata / Sosua / Cabarete

Though it’s easiest for travelers staying in Samaná to enjoy this excursion, it’s worth the journey whether you’re traveling from Punta Cana or beyond. Stay at Cayo Levantado Resort , located right in the heart of the waters of Samaná Bay on a white sand island, for the best whale-watching experience; you can also book whale-watching tours from the island.

20. Learn to Make Chocolate

In addition to its spectacular rum and cigars, the Dominican Republic is known for its chocolate; in fact, it’s known as one of the biggest chocolate producers in the world. Try your hand at making chocolate or touring one of the country’s cacao farms as a fun addition to your Dominican Republic itinerary.

For the best chocolate-making experience in the Dominican Republic, visit a chocolate farm and experience the process of making chocolate, from bar to bean. El Sendero Chocolate Farm , located just east of Santo Domingo, is one of the best places for this – a visit is definitely among the best things to do in the Dominican Republic.

Alternatively, check out chocolate tours and experiences in Santo Domingo ; these are less hands-on but just as informative about the process, with taste tests included. Or, check out the chocolate make experience at Del Oro in Puerto Plata for a hands-on experience that even cruise ship visitors can enjoy.

21. Go Ziplining in Samaná

The Samaná peninsula is home to some of the best ziplining courses in the country, especially the El Valle zipline near the small beach town of the same name. An extensive  ziplining course   makes this  a popular day trip from Samaná  or local activity for those staying nearby.

Alternatively, the ziplining courses outside of Punta Cana offer another way to experience this adventurous sport for travelers staying in the area. With transportation included or organized by most resorts in the area, it makes for an easy way to break up a long day by the pool or on the beach at your resort.

22. Relax at a Resort in Punta Cana

The resort town par excellence in the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana is one of the most beloved beach destinations in the country. For many travelers, simply kicking back and relaxing at one of the many all-inclusive resorts is among the best things to do in the Dominican Republic – the very best!

Lopesan Costa Bávaro Resort, Spa and Casino , located on a particularly beautiful stretch of world-famous Bávaro Beach, is one of the most impressive resorts in Punta Cana. The family-friendly and adults-only sections of the resort make this a great option both for travelers with kids in tow or those on a kids-free getaway.

23. Climb Pico Duarte

Located in Jose Armando Bermudez National Park at the heart of the Dominican Republic, Pico Duarte is the tallest peak in the Caribbean, with over 10,000 feet in elevation. Climbing this impressive mountain in the Cordillera Central – sometimes known as the Dominican Alps – is no easy feat, but it’s one that even casual hikers should consider among the best things to do in the Dominican Republic.

You’ll definitely want to summit Pico Duarte with an experienced guide. I recommend looking to the Dominican Abroad for guide recommendations – this fellow travel writer used to organize these tours herself and now has passed off this experience to the local guides she’s worked with for years.

Make sure to bring some layers for your visit; this may be a Caribbean island , but the elevation of Pico Duarte means it can get quite chilly here.

24. Stay at an Ecolodge in Samaná

The Samaná peninsula is known for its laidback vibes and incredible natural gems, including everything from lush rainforests, hidden waterfalls like El Limón, and some of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic . It’s our favorite spot in the country for a true getaway.

If you’re headed to the Samaná peninsula, consider booking a stay in one of the area’s many  eco lodges  or  eco resorts , which marry a jungle-like atmosphere with proximity to some of the nicest and most untouched beaches in the area. Near Las Galeras,  Chalet Tropical Biohotel is a great choice for an eco-friendly getaway, though the gorgeous El Valle Lodge near the small town El Valle – home to one of the country’s best beaches – is our favorite recommendation in the area.

25. Hike to 27 Waterfalls in Damajagua

There are plenty of things to do in Puerto Plata beyond simply soaking up the sun at the beach – within a short drive, you’ll find some of the most beautiful natural attractions the Dominican Republic has to offer. Among them are the 27 waterfalls in Damajagua.

Also referred to as  27 Charcos , the waterfalls of Damajagua are one of the most visited attractions in Puerto Plata and the city’s most  popular day trip . While most visitors tend to only see 12 waterfalls due to the time it takes to hike to them, it’s one of the best things to do in the Dominican Republic.

The easiest way to visit the waterfalls is by taking a  small group day trip . Access to the waterfalls is via a walking trail, with some areas requiring individuals to walk along steep paths.  This attraction requires some measure of physical fitness, thus making it unsuitable for small children and the elderly.

Dominican Republic: Vacation Tips + Island Adventures

One of the best destinations in the Caribbean to visit is the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean country that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. The Dominican Republic, known as the “DR,” is famous for its white sand beaches, turquoise blue waters, incredible resorts, and excellent golf courses.

How to Get to the Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic Map

The best way to get to the Dominican Republic is by booking a flight. Most visitors fly into the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). American Airlines, Delta, and JetBlue are the best airlines that fly into the DR.

For those who would instead visit the Dominican Republic by water, countless cruises stop by the Dominican Republic. Taking a cruise is an excellent option for those who want to avoid flying or want to take in the beautiful Atlantic Ocean views from aboard a cruise ship. Some of the best cruise liners that visit the DR include Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, and Virgin Voyages.

Best Time to Visit the Dominican Republic

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Deciding on the best time to visit the Dominican Republic depends on your preferences and what kind of experience you seek.

Peak Season (December-April): This is the peak tourism season because many people head to the Caribbean during the winter months to escape the typical cold weather experienced in the United States, Europe, and many other countries.

During peak season, you can expect weather ranging from highs in the low 80s and lows in the  mid-70s, making it an excellent time to relax on the Dominican Republic beaches, hit the links at one of the phenomenal golf courses in the area, or enjoy the warm Atlantic ocean water. However, you can also expect higher prices for flights and accommodations due to the popularity of the Dominican Republic during the peak season.

Shoulder Season (May-June and September-November): These months are a great time to visit the Dominican Republic due to fewer crowds compared to the high season and less humidity and heat during the season. You can typically expect highs in the mid-80s and lows in the low 70s, making it a great time to visit for those looking for warm weather, enjoy the Caribbean beaches, and experience warm waters outdoors.

Off Season (July-August): July and August are considered the low season in the Dominican Republic. Many people avoid traveling to the Caribbean during these months due to the high heat and humidity. Highs in the upper 80s and lows in the mid-70s with significant humidity. Due to July and August being the off-season, you can typically expect more accommodation and flight deals!

There is never a wrong time to visit the Dominican Republic. However, May-June and September-November are optimal for those looking to escape to the island with warm weather and fewer crowds.

Here’s What You Get

We’re taking YOU to the Super-Star of off-shore islands in the Dominican Republic. Think Sun, Sand, Booze, Boats and Bikinis! You can thank us later but for now let us tell you about the ridiculously beautiful Saona Island… The first tourist boat to dock at Saona was Christopher Columbus in 1494 and Saona has not ceased to amaze visitors for the last 500+ years!

What’s so amazing about Isla Saona? A good question deserves several good answers:

  • This is a real island mon! We’re talking about 110 sq kilometers. Saona is not a tiny off-shore key. The beach stretches as far as the eye can see.
  • Is turquoise, transparent ocean water your thing? We hope! Take a Selfie because ocean water this color is found at few places on earth.
  • Seriously, white sand AND palm trees? Yes, it’s a killer combination. The quintessential Caribbean island deserves the quintessential Caribbean scenery; ivory sands lined with rows of swaying palms.

You may be saying: “Ok I get it, Saona is beautiful but why should I spend money to visit?” An excellent question deserves several excellent responses:

  • We’ll hit the Caribbean Sea on a speedboat and slowly cruise you back to the mainland on a spacious catamaran. Oh, there’s also music, animation and open bar. This is the Caribbean Sea folks. How many opportunities will you have to sail the Caribbean Sea?
  • It’s an All-inclusive, Full-Day, outing and you need some time away from your Punta Cana resort. You get the boat, the open bar and the food. Oh and we pick you up and drop you off at your lobby. That was easy!
  • The natural pool is so stunning it’s not really fair. So, we kinda take you to a sandbar, far from the coast with clear, waist deep water. We give you rum and you may find a starfish or two at your feet. We hope this sounds ok to you…
  • The time on Saona island is priceless. Visit the Tiki Bar, dance merengue, visit the Tiki Bar, play volleyball, visit the Tiki Bar, walk the beach, visit the Tiki Bar, hit the buffet.

It’s your vacation to Punta Cana and you may only have ONE opportunity to do this the right way. Go with the pros to Saona!

Isla Saona is the #1 demanded excursion in Punta Cana so Book now to ensure your spot. The Sun the Sand and a Drink in Your hand! Join us for our Classic Experience to the Dominican Republic’s famous off-shore oasis – Saona island.

Excellent service with local collection points, good connection to boats and a very good day out. My only criticism would be the beach vendors, but this is not really the companies fault so I would not drop the rating because of it

This was a fantastic cruise! I highly recommend it! The staff are awesome, the transportation to and from your hotel is nice (our van had A/C!!😁) and the lunch on the beach was delicious, fantastic, awesome!!!…

Had a great time on this excursion!! Max was our tour guide . He was very informative and made us feel secure with the locals and what we would be doing. Playing in the ocean on the sandbars, drinking rum and coke, and jetting along on a fast boat to a catamaran party. Couldn’t have had a better time. The lunch on the island was very good but the restrooms were a little scary. Make sure u bring towels and plenty of sun screen! This tour was exactly what we wanted it to be. Spending the beautiful day on the water. We even had our own pirate along for the ride.

Our tour to Saona Island was great. Punta Cana Tours did a great job making sure we had a good time. The tour operated pretty close to on time but you are in the Caribbean and everything runs a little slower here. LOL Our tour guid Ramond or Raymond was great. He spoke 4 languages and gave information very clearly so you knew what you were supposed to do and where to go.

Now to the good stuff. The bus ride was an hour through some pretty countryside on a nice bus with AC. Once you get to the drop off location where you get on the boat its time to go to the island. There is one stop along the way where you can get in waist deep tropical water and have some drinks. All provided and not watered down like I was expecting. Then back on the boat and on to the BEAUTIFUL Saona Island. Words can’t describe it. Palm tree lined seashore with white sand beaches and tropical aqua blue water. Plus they feed you and furnish all the drinks you want. Overall this trip is a MUST DO if you’re in the Dominican Republic. And Punta Cana Tours should be the tour company to take you there!

This is truly an exceptional company. It is not often you find a company with this level of customer service. A very special thank you to Garry for going above and beyond, even after hours, to make sure all of excursions and transportation needs went flawlessly. We will definitely be back many more times. As for Isla Saona, it really is like being placed inside of a post card. All of the guides made sure that we were not only safe at all times, they went out of their way to ensure we had to best time. Thank you all for making our wedding trip special for all of us.

I recommend to everyone . They picked us up at the right time in our resort ,no complaint at all. Thanks Punta Cana Tours.

Isla Saona is one of the most beautiful beaches we saw near Punta Cana, specially when we stayed inland. The water, sand, view, natural pool were the highlights of this excursion but it could have been organized a little better. The food and drinks were ok. All in all its worth it just for the transportation and beauty itself. Tip: Carry your own beach towel. A lot of sunscreen, sun glasses and snack food.

We had a great time! Its a long day on the bus. But well worth it. Nice tour ended at Saona Island for eats and a big party! We would go back!

When vacationing in a foreign place it’s always the best when you hook up with a tour group that shows you the real side of the country. I give two thumbs and two toes up for this trip. It could not have been done any better with the beautiful beaches, great barbeque and dancing. The laid back side of life is a beautiful thing. Brian S

The island of Saona is beautiful and we loved the whole experience on the catamaran. The crew were all friendly and you could tell they totally enjoyed their job. The food was good and honestly the massage (for additional fee) was one of the best I’ve ever had. It was by far our favorite day in DR. Only downside, it wasn’t clear from the website details that we would be on a bus for almost 3 hours going to the port to leave. I would definitely recommend this excursion!

Excellent service, very punctual, great environment, great food. The natural pool and Saona Island are two of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. Sandro, the tour guide was FANTASTIC, very charming, friendly, and makes sure everybody understands. (He gives the tour in Spanish, English and French). I would highly recommend Punta Cana Tours and will likely book another trip next year when I plan to take my entire family to the Dominican Republic for my wedding!.

We also used This company for a trip to Saona Island and we used them for our Airport Transportation. The Saona Island trip was beautiful I only wish we had more time to chill on the Island. The drive to and from the airport were good my one gripe is to find my driver At the airport you need to push through a sea of quick talking taxi drivers all of which try to confuse you so you buy a ride with them instead of taking the trip you already paid for. Overall I rate the company 4 out of 5 stars for one hiccup on our first excursion.

Great day trip to Saona Island! I was in Punta Cana with my boyfriend for the weekend and was so glad we took a day trip to Saona Island! We were picked up early in the morning from our resort and it was about an hour’s drive to the beach where we’d get on the boat (which is good, because we had time to sleep). We took a catamaran there and really enjoyed it. There was dance music, unlimited rum & coke, “paparazzi” staff to take our pictures, and lots of time to relax and get a tan. When we got to the beach, they gave us an AMAZING barbecue lunch, consisting of grilled pork chops, BBQ chicken, seafood spaghetti, potato salad, seasoned rice, and a bunch of other sides and fruits. The rest of the time I spent napping and swimming on the beach with my boyfriend. I didn’t time it but we had a good amount of time on the beach. The sand there is white, clean, and really lovely. After the beach, we got on a speedboat and got out to a flat pool to swim and take pictures with star fish for maybe half an hour. And again we went out to a deeper location so they could throw fish food out of the boat and we could snorkel and look at the schools of fish. After that, they offered to sell us back the “paparazzi” photos they took of us ($40, why not?) which came with photos of you, stock photos of Samoa, and the music they were playing on the catamaran. Overall, it was a super fun experience and I loved it. I want to emphasize that the staff are really fun-loving and the good vibes are infectious! They really do keep you entertained.

I would caution families on the Saona Island Trip. The island is beautiful, but just be prepared for a long day- about 5 hours round trip transfer time to and from the boats (which included changing shuttles at a gas station). There are LOTS of locals selling things at the boarding point and on the island, take money (or be prepared to say no a lot 😉). There was a photographer that took a lot of pictures of our family in the water- also for a high cost (but you can really get them down in price!) I’m not sure if we would do this again with kids- it was about a 13 hour day. We do HIGHLY recommend Punta Cana Tours for transfers and excursions and would definitely use them again!

The waters around Saona Island are crystal clear and probably some of the prettiest turquoise waters you will ever see. The beaches were super nice, the palm trees made you feel like you were in the south Pacific, and the lunch was good. The catamaran out was entertaining and speedboat back was a nice change of pace. It was a great place to visit while we were in Punta Cana and I would highly recommend a visit to Saona Island if you get the chance.

I arrived with my wife in Punta Cana this year for our vacation. I was promptly greeted by our driver who was very friendly, professional and courteous. The ride to our hotel was nice, and the van was clean, and well maintained. During the week, we also used Punta Cana tours to book a tour at Isla Saona. We had a great time! I’d highly recommend Caribbean Dream and their staff. I travel a lot, and rarely am I treated with such professionalism. Thanks for a great trip, Jared

The island was very beautiful, the ocean had far less seaweed that our resort beach, Bavaro, so we were pleased. The buffet brunch was very plentiful and good. The staff were friendly and we felt comfortable following them all day from bus to boat to island to boat to bus! My only negative remark would be the bus commute time. From our resort to the dock to board the speedboat was 3 hours. The return bus ride was half of that time, 1 1/2 hours. There were also two stops along the way that did not look like passenger pick ups.

I send an email asking few question about a tour, my surprise was to have an answer from them super fast. I booked the tour, the picked me up in the time they told. Not even 5 or 10 minutes like I’m used to (in DR they have a saying “Hora Dominicana” which is 1/2 or 1hr after the time is set up) . The tour to Saona was OUTSTANDING! The guide was explaining all the way about the city and the culture. Isla Saona is a paradise, great food and good animation team. Im already making plans to book more tours. Gracias, I had a BLAST!

Catamaran ride to Isla Saona was the most memorable experience of our DR 2022 trip. The excursions with our hotel were pricey so I found this offer online for a much better price. The bus picks you up at the hotel and takes you to the catamaran where girls with rum and coke were already waiting for us. Everybody on the boat had a lot of fun dancing to the rhythm of latin music. The island itself is the prettiest place that I have ever been to, surrounded with palm trees, white sand and butterflies. As soon as we arrived to the island, buffet was open. On the way back we stopped by the natural pool where we took pictures with the star fish. Thank you for the great time!

We went to Saona Island with my family on 8/16 and we had the best experience ever. The ride from the Resort to the boat was smooth. We had a funny guide who kept us entertained. He spoke English very well which made it easier for us understand each other. It was a long day but was worth it. The speed boat ride, the Cataraman, party boat was really fun. We enjoyed ourselves. Thanks to the team at Punta Cana Tours. Next time we come to Punta Cana we will surely use you again. Thanks again!

We booked the Saona Island excursion. The actual island experience itself was wonderful. The shuttle was late in coming to get us (which we found out later was not the fault of the tour company but a large group of guests who only showed up partially on time). There were some children on our excursion that were very loud and energetic on the bus; our tour guide was great in joking around about the noisy kids. We took the speedboat to the island, stopping at the natural pool to swim and take pictures with starfish, then relaxed at the island, ate lunch, and took the catamaran back. Other reviews mention the vendors approaching them at the island and made it seem as though they were very aggressive and wouldn’t leave you alone. I found that a firm but pleasant ‘no thank you’ for any venders ended any persuading they tried. Any of the vendors the whole week we were there weren’t loud or obnoxious, they would simply try to show you their wares but were really good about backing down when you said no. Overall we really enjoyed the trip; it was worth the long ride from our resort in Punta Cana. The island was beautiful, all of the employees and our tour guide were friendly and really made the trip fun. I’d recommend it for anybody looking into day excursions from the resorts!

We used PuntaCana Tours for our hotel transfers and the excursion to Isla Saona, they were the best and most professional tour provider we have ever come across thank you again!

We booked our tour with Punta Cana Tours after reading several online reviews. We were not disappointed. Our tour guide, Emerson, got us off to a great and welcoming start and continued to keep us informed about local information and the what to expect next on the tour. After a short drive to Bayahibe we boarded a powerboat and headed to Saona Island with a short stopover to swim with the starfish. The island, beach and water were gorgeous! A nice lunch and drinks were provided. At the end of the day we boarded a large catamaran for a lively ride back, complete with rum drinks and dancers. It was a great day and our tour guide was exceptional. Long day but well worth the time and money.

I did the excursion to Saona Island and it was pretty good. I can surely say the team of Punta Cana Tours is super attentive, punctual and professional. I know a lot of DMC companies in Punta Cana, but their Customer Service is incomparable. I highly recommend them. Besides the wonderful staff, the tour was excellent, very safe, the food and drinks really good. I had a great time!! yen

We didn’t find out until late the night before we were due to go home that our trip was going to be extended for a day due to weather back in the US. We had wanted to go to Isla Saona but did not have time during our initial trip. I immediately went online to try and book a trip to Isla Saona with an outfit. Punta Cana Tours allowed us to book at almost 9pm the day before the trip and their tour guide Max and driver Elvis were amazing! The transportation in both the van and boats were clean and safe. The trip was a beautiful way to spend our extra day. I will go again with this company in a heartbeat and recommend it to anyone wanting to experience the Dominican outside of their resort!

Had an amazing time! From the speed boat ride to the island, having pictures taken with starfish, swimming in the beautiful ocean, to the catamaran ride back, it was all extremely fun!! I would definitely recommend doing this excursion if you plan on visiting the Dominican!

Overall the experience was very pleasant. We were picked up and greeted at our hotel promptly. Once picked up, we stopped at other nearby hotels to pick up other guests who too were going on the excursion. On our way to the dock, we stopped on the side of an intersection to switch and wait for another van.The cruise, natural pool, and the island was everything the website promised. The staff was very friendly, energetic, and professional. We would highly recommend this cruise for adults as it is not too kid friendly (a lot of alcohol, loud music, an dancing).

We had the best time here. The entire crew from the bus driver to the crew on board the boats were fantastic making sure everyone was having a good time. I would recommend making your reservations with them for a very memorable experience.

The Isla Saona tour, it was definitely my favorite. Picked up by shuttle, transferred to bigger bus, taken to an area where we were to get on a boat and head towards our destination. This was the clearest, most beautiful blue water I have ever seen. (They had several photographers taking candid photos throughout the trip and offered a dvd to buy at the end for both excursions). The photographs taken on the Isla Saona tour were especially great, I’ll admit. Actual time on the island was only a couple of hours, including time to eat, but it was a blast. Then we left on a catamaran where more drinking and dancing ensued. We were then shuttled right back to our hotel! If returning to this area I would definitely book through this service again!

I booked this trip on line in Feb. 2022, Saona Island Excursion, after reading all the great reviews of all the other travelers. They picked us up ( wife and I ) in our hotel lobby on time like they had promised in a new and clean vehicle with the A/C on. This was the best money spent during the week. It was a full and fun filled day, catamaran boat ride out to the Island and a nice speed boat ride back. Also great entertainment, dancing and beverages for all ages all day long. I highly recommend this trip when going to Punta Cana and for a very reasonable price you can a purchase a Caribbean Lobster on the Island…Thx. Paulv-Bos

had a wonderful time. i was worried about the tourist draw for this excursion, but you’re in punta cana, you’re already part of the tourist trap. anyway, the tour guides were amazing and so accommodating. we went to the island by a speed boat and came back in a catamaran, which i think is the best and only way to do this. also, the provided buffet lunch was probably one of the best meals i had while in punta cana. fill up on the tender chicken. definitely worth going. the only annoying part was when they tried repeatedly to sell the pictures they took of us. it would have been easier if they weren’t trying to sell all the photos as a package. they’d sell more if people can just buy individual pictures. but great trip overall

Trip and service was great. Tour guide “Presidente Daniel” was a treat. We did the all day Sonana trip. It was beautiful but I wouldn’t recommend it for children. Many all day drinkers can’t handle their booze. Trip there and island was fine but boat ride back was full of college kids that were there for free booze and they we are mess. Maybe we just had a bad group, but it was terrible experience. Nothing against tour company but maybe cut back on the booze on the way back. My better and half can party with the best of them, but rude drunk people throwing garbage in the sea, spilling drinks and falling on everyone is a little off. Take a booze cruise for that.

After a long flight, complete with delays, from Chicago, we arrive at PUJ for a much needed vacation. Going though security and immigration in the airport was a real pain. My suitcase had been gone through and a wheel on my bag was busted off. All I wanted to do was get to my hotel, and so far, this trip wasn’t starting out well. After leaving the security area, we were greeted by a nice man (I forgot his name) that was ready and waiting to take us to our hotel. There were what seemed like a sea of taxi drivers all vying for our business. I was very glad I had pre-arranged to be picked up by punta cana tours. They were courteous, very nice, and helpful as they took my wife’s and my luggage and helped us into the van. I was impressed. The van was clean, nice and comfortable and our driver was very helpful and informative on our drive to the hotel. Later that week, we also booked a tour to Isla Saona through the Again, they were fast, prompt, and very professional. The trip to Isla Saona is something not to be missed. What started off as a less than perfect trip, ended in a very enjoyable vacation. I know Punta Cana Tours and their staff, had a lot to do with it. Thanks for everything guys, Mike

Our trip to the Dominican Republic was terrible. The only thing that was great was how the staff as promised, helped us to make the best of it. We had all kind of problems with the hotel, good thing we had 3 days out booked with Punta Cana Tours. We went on Saona Island everything was Great, the trip to the capital city was too long but well organized and our fishing charter for the day was professionally planed. We thank you guys for your service, we will speak highly about you in Texas. Woods

While our trip was short to DR, transportation provided through Punta Cana Tours was long. We waited over 30minutes for transportation from our resort to the excursion and no contact was made from the company to notify us. Had we not stayed in the lobby a little longer, the driver would’ve came and left without us and have no regard to reach out to us. However, Isla Saona was beautiful, the transportation to and from the dock to the island was fun filled, with entertainment, drinks and a beautiful view on a speed boat and a catamaran. The food given to us during lunch on the Island was buffet style and American food but tasty! We would definitely recommend this excursion to anyone visiting DR as it is a beautiful sight and worth visiting!

Unbelievable excursion. Such a fun time. Transportation and each piece of the excursion was very well managed. Crew on the boat were a BLAST. They made the sandbar bar and the snorkeling portions highly enjoyable as well. Definitely not for kids or those NOT trying to have fun!

A fantastic experience! Well worth going on this day-long trip. We’ve went as a family of 3 with our 4YO daughter. Punctual pick-up from the hotel. Our group counted about 15 people. After reaching our “naval departure” port we’ve been wizzed off in a speedboat which was a very fun ride. After a few moments we’ve found ourselves swimming in the natural swimming pool drinking some vitamins %-). Then had some pictures with starfishes taken and wizzed of again on the speedboat until we’ve reached Isla Saona. Beautiful beaches and postcard picturesque water!!! After lunch went back to mainland on board a catamaran! Fantastic experience! Would definitely recommend.

Highly Recommended!. This excursion was absolutely worth it. I booked it with Punta Cana tours. A catamaran ride to Saona Island on the calm Caribbean sea with music and dancing, followed by lunch and a beautiful lagoon to swim in. An entire day’s trip, but lots of fun!

I would like to say that I would DEFINITELY recommend Punta Cana Tours to my friends and family if they visit the Dominican Republic and choose to partake in any excursions. We had a blast on Saona Island. All of the logistics were handled appropriately and we were very pleased. At Saona Island, everything was amazing. The only thing we would have changed is that we would have preferred to take the speedboats out to the island in the morning and then ride the catamaran back in the afternoon. It would have been nice to be able to cap off the fantastic day of relaxation with a party cruise back on the catamaran as opposed to partying on the way there. Just to reiterate, I will most definitely be recommending Punta Cana Tours to any of my friends and family that choose to visit. Thanks for helping make our vacation a fantastic time!

Isla Sona – The tour itself was good, the catamaran sailing was quite nice and relaxing although overpriced products were being sold. Once we got to the island, it was great and we had a good time being by ourselves on the beach. The food was average. Catamaran tour:- Cheaper than the Isla Sona tours and the snorkeling was probably the highlight. Don’t forget to bring in a water camera for the tour. They will hawk you pictures that cost around $40 and its not worth it. Other than that it was a memorable experience

How long is the boat ride from Punta Cana to Isla Saona?

You cannot take a boat directly from Punta Cana to Saona island as the distance is too far. To reach the jump off point for Saona you must first drive to the town of Bayahibe. Normal drive time is about an hour but if you're with a group excursion, drive time can be up to 2 hours due passenger pick up at Punta Cana resorts. Once in Bayahibe there are two options to reach Saona: motorboat, which takes about 40 minutes or catamaran which takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.  Unless you've chartered your own private catamaran, all Saona group excursions will include one way via motorboat and one way via catamaran.

How long is the Saona Island excursion?

Expect to be gone approximately 10 hours on a typical Saona island excursion from Punta Cana or up to 12 hours if your hotel is located in Uvero Alto, Punta Cana's northern most section. This includes round trip bus transport from the resorts, round trip boat transport to Saona and of course some island time!

You can opt for a private charter which will take only about 8 hours. And if you want to really get there quick, you can take a helicopter excursion to Saona island .

Why is Saona Island so popular?

At 100 square kilometers, Saona is a behemoth of an offshore island with miles of unobstructed tropical beach, turquoise waters and coconut palms. It really is the quintessential, tropical shoreline in the Caribbean. The motorboat and catamaran ride, to and from Saona, is just as memorable as the island itself with an unforgettable stop at the natural swimming pool - an immense sandbar of waist deep waters where music is played and drinks are served!

What is the best beach in Saona?

Saona island, located off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, offers miles of tropical, white powdery beaches. The most popular, and the most visited for Saona excursions, is Playa los Abanicos. Also popular is Catuano Point and Playa del Gato. Playa Palmilla is mentioned a great deal but this beach is located on the mainland and not on Saona. Off Playa Palmilla is where the renowned natural swimming pool is located, a popular sandbar stop for Saona excursions.

Where do boats leave for Saona Island?

Saona island boat departures leave from the southeastern Dominican town of Bayahibe which is about an hour drive from Punta Cana. If you are on a group excursion with others, transport to Bayahibe can take up to 2 hours when factoring in other passenger pick ups.

Does anyone live on Saona Island?

Saona island is part of the Dominican Republic's Cotubanama National Park which prohibits development and inhabitants. With that said, the small fishing village of Mano Juan was the only community that existed before the national park's declaration in 1975; it was permitted to remain with development and population restrictions. Today about 500 individuals live in Mano Juan.

How long is the boat trip to Saona Island?

Saona Island is located off southeastern shores of the Dominican Republic and is only reachable by boat. The closest mainland town is Bayahibe from where there are two options to reach Saona: motorboat, which takes about 40 minutes or catamaran which takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.  Unless you've chartered your own private catamaran, all Saona group excursions will include one way via motorboat and one way via catamaran.

Why go to Saona Island?

Saona island is the only offshore island relatively close to Punta Cana. The trip to Saona combines two of the most sought after activities for tourists to the Dominican Republic: getting out on a boat and spending time on the beach; preferably the island kind! And Saona itself is worth the trip, surrounding by calm Caribbean seas it is the quintessential tropical island with miles of powdery beaches, bordered lazy coconut palms and lapping turquoise waters.

Can you snorkel on Saona Island?

Typical excursions to Saona island do not include snorkeling. Although there are coral reefs just offshore from the town of Bayahibe - the jump off point for the Saona island excursion - these reefs are located in deeper waters that are more conducive to scuba diving.

Two Islands, Three Resorts, And One Unforgettable Caribbean Vacation

Want to make the most of your tropical getaway switch up your settings with the help of three great properties..

The beach at Westin Puntacana Resort & Club in the Dominican Republic

The Caribbean is full of stunning islands to explore, and many are convenient to connect within one trip. For a quick trip from the U.S., the easiest "two-in-one" destinations might be Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, given the short distance between these islands. Both are already extremely popular with Americans and there's no shortage of great hotels and resorts for all types of travelers.

Puerto Rico, easily accessible from New York, has everything from mountains and bustling cities to rainforests and historical neighborhoods. Spend several days exploring San Juan, the largest city in Puerto Rico, taking in the colorful architecture and culinary experiences before flying just about an hour to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

All the while, enjoy relaxing overnight stays at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Resort in Puerto Rico, The Westin Punta Cana Resort & Club, and the stunning Sanctuary Cap Cana, an All-Inclusive Resort.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

The rooftop pool at Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel and Casino

The Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel and Casino is often recognized as one of the best resorts in San Juan, as it offers incredible amenities in an equally incredible location. Not only is the hotel only a 10-minute drive from the airport, but it has a beautiful rooftop infinity pool—with phenomenal views of the bay—as well as spa treatments, a casino if you feel like doing a little gambling, and restaurants on site.

The hotel's shuttle is a convenient way to get to Old San Juan (about five minutes) or the beach to soak in some much-needed vitamin D. Choices Restaurant, located on property, is a great spot for Mexican street food. For a casual dining experience like a juicy burger, or light lunch options while relaxing by the pool, you can order from Bay Pool Bar and Grille .

Although the hotel has some incredible dining experiences, you need to venture out a little bit to explore San Juan's food scene. Take the Old San Juan Walk & Taste Tour with Spoon (around 3 hours and 15 minutes) to get a taste of San Juan, literally. It's hot, so be sure to wear comfy shoes and breathable clothing while you walk around and explore the city. Spoon takes the group through a culinary adventure and city tour, so you can see some of the 500-year-old Spanish architecture, in addition to tasting some of the best drinks and food from locally owned, small establishments and restaurants that are passionate about sustainability.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

An aerial view of Westin Puntacana Resort & Club in the Dominican Republic

After exploring San Juan, you can take a short flight (about 50 minutes or so) to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. It's easy to island top with quick flight options, as well as daily ferry trips, too.

Checking into the Westin Puntacana Resort & Club will immediately put you in a great spot to enjoy the beach. The property is set on a beautiful, white sand beach with clear water—an ideal location for relaxing and getting some much-needed sun. In addition to the beach, there are golf courses nearby, plenty of shopping and places to eat, and some fun water excursions close to the resort. After spending time at the beach, stop into Six Senses Spa to enjoy a massage before dinner. If you don't feel like dealing with the sand, they have a beautiful outdoor pool for their guests to use, as well.

Of course, you're always welcome and encouraged to explore the nearby area of Punta Cana, but if you tend to like to stay put while on vacation, there are fantastic restaurants within the property to experience some local flavors, incredible coffee, and fresh seafood like at the Brassa Grill & Bar or Anani Restaurant. Make time to visit Don Queco Cigar Bar before dinner at Bao Restaurant for Pan-Asian cuisine.

Be sure to venture out into the community for an Eco Journey Experience at the Sustainability Center . This is an amazing way to learn about some of the sustainability efforts in Punta Cana, ending with a picturesque lagoon swim at the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve. The stunning subtropical forest has bright blue, freshwater lagoons to cool off in and they're truly stunning.

The private pool of the Royalty Villa at Sanctuary Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic

From there, drive about 20 minutes to spend a few nights at the Sanctuary Cap Cana . The five-star Punta Cana luxury property is an all-inclusive that really gives guests a high-end experience. The hotel is part of the Luxury Collection Adult All-Inclusive Resorts and it's set within a private gated area (Cap Cana), surrounded by beaches and ocean views. In addition to enjoying the water, there are many things to keep you busy, including water activities and outdoor sports, in as well as the exceptional restaurants on the property.

Private villas and suites give guests a taste of luxury, with the Sanctuary Spa a luxurious bonus for guests to conveniently get a facial, a manicure, or soothe their tense muscles with a calming massage. The restaurants and bars on the property have beautiful views and delicious food and drinks. Be sure to make time to stop at the Love Bar for a cocktail before dining on fresh seafood at the Blue Marlin, set on stilts overlooking the turquoise waters or Capriccio, for authentic Italian dishes.

There are a lot of ways to experience multiple Caribbean islands in one trip, but if you want to be right in the heart of the action and keep it simple, these properties in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic will cover it all.

This island definitely has its safe parts, however issues can also be alarming in certain areas . Things like mugging and robbery are known to be focused towards tourists, so it’s important to prepare properly before visiting.

Our basic tips for safety in the Dominican Republic include:

  • Check up on the safe areas to stay within each destination.
  • Leave all valuables at home when out exploring.
  • Don’t leave items unattended when at the beach alone and going for a swim.
  • Use Uber instead of normal taxis.
  • Avoid wandering off into unknown streets at night (alone or in groups).

It’s really just basic stuff to keep in mind here. Most issues occur when you leave the touristy zones , so as long as you stay there and keep your guard up then you’ll have virtually no issues.

An extra mention is avoiding motorcycle rides. It’s a big part of Dominican culture, however the island is also home to one of the largest accident rates by motorbike on earth. Not a statistic you’ll want to be a part of…

Safety Facts about the Dominican Republic

  • One way to evaluate safety is by looking at the 2020 Global Peace Index. This measures the state of peace of each country in comparison with the rest of the world, by evaluating both tangible and qualitative indicators.
  • The Dominican Republic ranked as 76th out of the 163 nations measured, which is similar to that of Argentina and Cambodia. For comparison, The United States ranked as 121st.
  • Whilst still not as popular as the rest of Latin America (for backpackers), this island is slowly becoming safer as long as you heed local advice and stick to the touristy areas.
  • As always you’ll want to properly research up on the best neighbourhoods to stay in, and to avoid going out late at night by yourself.

Although most tourists only head to the resorts of Punta Cana, there’s way more going for this island (in fact we highly recommend NOT going there, given it’s all too expensive and lacking in authenticity). Let’s take a look at the very best places below.

Santo Domingo

The capital of the island, this is where to come if you’re after authentic Dominican culture and to learn about the history of this proud nation.

backpacking santo domingo

A worthy day trip is to the Las Tres Hojas , which is a series of limestone caves filled with blue and green waters. They look similar to the cenotes found in the Riviera Maya , however are also pretty unique (they were even featured in one of the Jurassic Park films).

We recommend heading with this day tour which also includes all transport and a visit to the Botanical Gardens.

las hojas dominican republic

The Historic Centre is also full of beautiful colonial buildings and forts such as the Alcázar de Colón , Fortaleza Ozama as well as the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación.

It’s worth planning a walking route to see them all in a day, although you’ll want to bring lots of water given it gets really hot on these streets!

Las Terrenas

Those after beautiful beaches need look no further.

Located along the Samaná Peninsula , Las Terrenas has a really stunning coastline, and has become a popular place with backpackers and expats moving here.

limon falls dominican republic

Despite this extra tourism, the place still feels really authentic and is great for having a more raw Dominican experience.

You can also use this town as a base camp to explore this stunning region. Limón Waterfalls is a worthy day trip , where you’ll hike through the jungle to reach the emerald pools and these 50 ft-wide falls.

Playa Rincón is continually ranked as the most beautiful beach in the Dominican Republic, and of course one of the best in all of Latin America too. On your way here you can also explore the nearby Parque Nacional Cabo Cabrón (yep that’s really it’s name…).

Puerto Plata

Another coastal destination, this city is much bigger than Las Terrenas however is a much better all-rounder for backpackers.

One of the most awesome things (and was George’s favourite on the whole island) is the Amber Museum .

amber museum puerto plata

Here you’ll see amber formations that formed over 50 million years ago, back to when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. Inside some of the structures we can find insects and even lizards trapped in perfect condition, meaning you’re effectively looking at creatures that once lived with these prehistoric giants!

Puerto Plata is also home to the only Gondola in the Caribbean , which is known locally as the Teleférico. Here you’ll rise up 800 metres onto the top of the Isabel de Torres mountain, which gives some memorable sweeping views over the city and coast. It’s also a great place to hike in nature too, with the walk back down will take a good couple of hours.

puerto plata telefrrico

Those who are strapped for time will love this all-inclusive day tour , where you’ll ride the cable-car, visit an organic cacao farm as well as have a traditional Dominican lunch included too!

Dominican Republic Itinerary (1 Week)

Here we’ll now cover our very best itinerary of the Dominican Republic. As well as keeping an eye on time, it’s also been designed to keep things fresh and exciting too for you.

Santo Domingo (Days 1-3)

The capital tends to divide opinion – however to be fair this is because most who head to this nation only want luxury resorts and beaches.

santo domingo dominican republic

Those who are actually interested in the local culture will find Santo Domingo a really interesting city to explore. The highlights are within the Colonial Centre , where you can first head to the bustling Parque Colón. Nearby there’s lots of beautiful architecture to see, such as the Fortaleza Ozama and the Convento de los Dominicos.

Plaza España is just a few blocks away, and is a good next place to head (lots of water and ice cream vendors here, which are very much needed in this heat).

Here we can visit the Alcázar de Colón and its beautifully arched terraces, as well as the Museum of Rum and Sugar Cane to learn more about these important Dominican exports. You can join this historical city tour to see the very best sites with a knowledgeable local guide.

Las Terrenas (Days 4-5)

From Santo Domingo we’ll now take the 3 hour bus north to Las Terrenas, which is located along the Samana peninsula.

The beaches here and hands-down some of the most beautiful we’ve seen in Latin America , and these two days are all about enjoying them as much as possible. You can easily go snorkelling in these multi-coloured waters, or even hire a yacht for the day for maximum freedom.

There’s not really much to do in the town per se (aside from beaches and enjoying cocktails), however it’s worth using a half-day to head to Limón Waterfalls. We recommend leaving early as the hike is pretty hot during midday.

Puerto Plata (Days 6-8)

Last but not least we’ll head to the popular city of Puerto Plata to enjoy a final few days in the Dominican Republic. It’s a bit of a trek from Las Terrenas, so be sure to start really early to make the most of your day.

las terrenas dominican republic

Although some parts have become quite touristy (there is an area just for resorts), the city centre still offers some historic charm, especially around Parque Central. Here you can walk along the cobblestone streets and also marvel at the imposing Catedral de San Felipe Apóstol .

Just a couple of blocks away we can head to the Museo del Ámbar, which is one of the most notorious of its kinds in the world. Given the island is rich in amber reserves, it means that many important discoveries have been made , including the lizards and mosquitoes that are frozen inside (over 50 million years old – still in perfect conditions!).

Afterwards you can walk along the infamous Malecón, which is best from 4pm onwards (for the sunset as well as more comfortable evening temperatures).

Be sure to use one of your days here to explore the mountain of Isabel Torres . You can easily take a mototaxi to the base, and either hike up (around 2 hours) or take the gondola ride to the top. Along the jungle paths you’ll find many rare animals and birds, as well as some iguanas chilling on the viewpoints.

puerto plata dominican republic

Damajagua Falls is another awesome visit, which is part of the 27 waterfalls trail. You can head with a tour here , where they’ll take you through the circuit and include all transport and safety equipment.

And that marks the end of our one-week stint through the Dominican Republic! From here you can take a flight out of Puerto Plata or Santo Domingo back home. Alternatively, you can take a cheap flight over to Colombia to begin your South American adventure.

Now let’s move on to our most important tips, so you can have the best experience possible here.

The Dominican Republic: Travel Safety Tips

Like with any new destination you’ll need to prepare a bit to keep yourself safe, and it’s no different here in the Dominican Republic.

  • Use Ubers, which are popular throughout the island and are safer than traditional cabs.
  • Look out for the top rated hostels in the Dominican Republic for the most comfortable rooms and meeting like minded people etc.
  • Keep all valuables in your accommodation when heading out at night (definitely no passport!).

dominican republic island trips

  • In Santo Domingo, stay within the Centro Colonial which is the safest district for tourists.
  • Hagglers can be quite aggressive here, so be firm with your no’s and keep walking if you’re not interested in what they’re selling.
  • Use a Safe Money Belt to keep your wallet and valuables safe when out during the day.
  • Drink lots of bottled water – dehydration is a big risk here.
  • Never leave clothes or bags unattended when swimming in the sea (either go with a group or leave them where you’re staying).

Follow these travel safety trips and use common sense, and you’ll have both a safe and memorable time traveling through the Dominican Republic.

Traveling Around The Dominican Republic

When traveling between different regions, you have two main options.

The first is using the big traditional buses . These are best when heading between major cities, such as Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata. Metro ST Autobuses is a really solid option, and has comfortable seats as well as air conditioning (although bring a jumper on-board given it can get pretty cold!).

Distances can be long, so use Padlocks on your bags given there’s a chance you may want to sleep for a few hours.

The other option are the local Guaguas , which look like small minivans. These will be helpful when riding between the coasts and smaller towns, and are much more inexpensive.

This makes it great for travelers on stricter budgets, and it’s as easy as flagging them down whenever you see them. Of course the disadvantages of these are that the schedules are more random, and you’ll also be making more stops along the way to pick up a local (or 10) in different areas.

Best Time to Visit The Dominican Republic

This island has a typical, tropical Caribbean climate. This means it’s going to be pretty hot year-round.

The dry season runs from December until April , as well as July and August. Average temperatures often range from 75-78°F, although July and August can rise up to 82°F.

backapacking puerto plata

You can expect just 1 inch of rainfall throughout each of these months – perfect for hitting the beaches!

The wet season includes the months of May-June, as well as September until November . Average daily temperatures will be warmer here, ranging from 79-83°F.

Although you’d think that rainfall levels go crazy high here (like it usually goes in the Caribbean), it’s actually not that much different from the dry season. Between 2-3 inches fall each month, which is usually within a spontaneous burst or storm – that also passes just as quick.

What to pack for the Dominican Republic?

As already mentioned, the Dominican Republic is going to be hot year-round . This means you’ll want to prioritise lighter clothes, sandals and other garments that are breathable and prevent you from overheating.

There are some parts that can get cool, as especially so for those who plan to hike up Pico Duarte (which is just over 3000m above sea-level). You’ll need some jumpers for this one.

It’s also a good idea to invest in quality hiking boots too, as there’s many nice jungle trails to explore. We recommend these for the guys and these for the girls .

Whilst rainfall isn’t that much of a problem, it’s still worth carrying a Poncho regardless if visiting in the dry or wet season. This is because the showers here are usually sudden and sharp downpours, versus the usual lighter showers.

Backpacking the Dominican Republic Itinerary

This tropical island nation isn’t the most popular for backpackers, however it gives something really unique for those who do make the visit.

From world-class beaches and beautiful jungle hikes to seeing life from 50 million years ago, it will prove to be quite a memorable trip!

The 6 best cheap caribbean all-inclusive resorts for 2024.

Plan an affordable beach getaway at these top resorts.

Cheap Caribbean All-Inclusive Resorts

All-inclusive resorts are a much-loved option for low-stress Caribbean vacations. With accommodations, food and some activities all rolled into one price, these resorts can take away much of the hassle of planning a relaxing trip someplace warm and tropical. As vacation prices continue to rise, it's getting harder to lock down a cheap all-inclusive stay – but it's certainly not impossible. Beachy hot spots like Curaçao or St. Lucia may be out of budget, but destinations like Mexico and the Dominican Republic don't need to break the bank (just don't expect five-star luxury at these prices).

We've compiled a list of affordable all-inclusive resorts where two guests can stay in one room for approximately $225 or less per night. These prices may not be offered year-round, especially during the peak season for sun destinations of December to April. However, if you book well in advance, the cheaper rates should be offered across a broader range of dates. The prices here do not include flights, although the resorts below may offer packages that include them.

Whether you're looking for a romantic couples trip or just some quality time with the family, these resorts can deliver without breaking the bank.

  • Occidental Costa Cancún
  • Iberostar Dominicana
  • BlueBay Villas Doradas
  • El Cozumeleño Beach Resort
  • Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo
  • Caribe Deluxe Princess

Occidental Costa Cancún: Cancún, Mexico

Orange kayak with paddles inside on a Caribbean beach with turquoise water.

Sitting at the north end of Cancún's ultra-popular Hotel Zone overlooking the Caribbean Sea is this 358-room property, where a room for two with a king bed starts at $210. The best prices are in the off-season or at the tail-end of the peak season, but some more popular dates go for as low as $240. The Occidental Costa Cancún is a great place for water sports, with kayaking, windsurfing, sailing and snorkeling all on the menu.

Past guests have noted that it's a particularly family-friendly resort and not an adult party spot. Fittingly, kids of all ages are looked after with child care, two water parks (though one has an entry fee) and an alcohol-free nightclub for teens. It's also easy to get out and explore, with buses to downtown Cancún for shopping as well as easy booking of excursions to Mayan pyramids (not part of the all-inclusive). Dining choices range from buffets to upscale Mexican and Italian food, with service offered all throughout the day.

Iberostar Dominicana: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Golf ball on a tea with an ocean in the far background.

Situated in the Dominican Republic's resort hot spot of Punta Cana and billed as a five-star property, Iberostar Dominicana is surprisingly affordable. Rooms for two go for as little as $200 per night, although prices jump in the busiest time of the year from January to March. Even at the cheapest rates, you'll get free Wi-Fi and a private balcony. You can lounge by lagoon-style pools or on palapa-shaded beach chairs. Vacationers can take advantage of 18 holes of golf on-site, a spa and a coral lab that teaches about local ecosystems.

Recent guests have gushed about the entertainment program at Iberostar, a draw for anyone into music or dancing. Some also noted that the resort is great at catering to any dietary restrictions. Plus, Iberostar has introduced sustainability initiatives such as eliminating single-use plastics, committing to responsible fishing and pledging to make its resorts waste-free by 2025.

BlueBay Villas Doradas: Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Child sitting on the edge of a swimming pool and splashing her feet in the water.

Located just east of the beach town of Puerto Plata , this adults-only all-inclusive resort is a cheap option for a romantic escape without the kids. With advance booking, couples can stay at BlueBay Villas Doradas for as low as $200 per night for two guests. The bright, air-conditioned standard rooms measure a respectable 260 square feet. Beyond those four walls, you can hit the sands of Playa Dorada or lounge by the three outdoor pools.

The four restaurants run the gamut from Chinese cuisine to seafood. Active travelers at this resort may enjoy water sports, tennis, the on-site fitness center or nearby golf courses. Take note that extra fees are a little more prominent here: While it's standard for all-inclusives not to cover activities like diving and spa services, BlueBay Villas Doradas also charges for Wi-FI in the lower-tier rooms. That said, past travelers still praise the resort for its large beach, with plenty of chairs available there and at the pool; the service is also a strength, according to guests.

El Cozumeleño Beach Resort: San Miguel de Cozumel, Mexico

Woman snorkeling in the clear waters off the island of Cozumel in Mexico.

For a budget-friendly way to enjoy the white sands of Cozumel – an island in the Caribbean Sea just off the coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula – El Cozumeleño balances affordability and quality. Choose between rooms facing the garden or sea; all of them have terraces or balconies. Per-night costs for an all-inclusive stay for two go as low as $220 or even less at some points if you book sufficiently in advance.

Out in the resort, the all-inclusive rates cover free scuba diving lessons and snorkeling, as well as sports like tennis, kayaking, cycling and more. For those looking to just chill out, there are five outdoor pools, one indoor pool and a swim-up bar, as well as hot tubs and beach access. Dining options range from the upscale Veranda restaurant to beachy snack bars to room service. Music and theater lounges provide nightly entertainment. Recent guests describe El Cozumeleño as a great place to relax that's not too crowded, as it doesn't tend to cater to a party crowd.

Real Housewives of Potomac Season 8, Episode 15 Recap: No Fooling Around

By Justin Smith

Real Housewives of Potomac Season 8, Episode 15 recap

Drama, gunplay, and gossip? The latest episode of The Real Housewives of Potomac (Season 8, Episode 15) delivered it all as the Dominican Republic trip concluded. Of course, you can always count on a Housewives trip to be chaotic. Season 8 has been a bit of a clunker, but they’re trying their best to make up for it during this vacation.

Last week, the ladies started to let loose and for the first time all season, they felt like a cohesive group of friends. That façade slowly started to erode as the Green-Eyed Bandits expressed an issue with Wendy and Candiace for how they handled a sensitive conversation about Gizelle’s daughter. Real Housewives of Potomac Season 8, Episode 15, “Fool’s Gold,” picked up right where he left off, as Wendy and Candiace crashed the conversation about them.

Weaponizing the kids

Wendy and Candiace magically knew that the rest of the ladies were talking about them, so they wanted to get to the bottom of it. Gizelle was like, “We can talk about it later,” and Wendy shut that down right away. She said let’s get this over with now.

Robyn and Gizelle explained their issues, but Wendy and Candiace weren’t having any of it. They both said that they weren’t actually laughing about anything Gizelle was saying. Instead, they claimed they were just fully clocked out of the conversation. Apparently, they tune out anything related to Gizelle because of their past history.

“In the past, you have weaponized Grace against me,” Wendy explained, as she made her case for why she was laughing as Gizelle talked about her daughter.

Meanwhile, Candiace pulled the “double standard” card. It’s her go-to excuse when confronted about any aspect of her behavior. She said that the other ladies are allowed to laugh, but she isn’t. Is that actually the case? Probably not. But accountability isn’t on the horizon for these ladies, so it really didn’t matter what Gizelle and Robyn said.

Either way, Candiace and Wendy admitted that they were laughing during the Grace conversation. However, they were adamant that their chuckles weren’t about Grace. They didn’t clarify what was so funny, but they reaffirmed that they’re following the golden rules of Housewives. Don’t mess with the children.

Havana Nights

The ladies agreed to disagree about Candiace and Wendy’s reaction to the Grace conversation, and they shifted their sights on Robyn’s Havanna Nights party. Apparently, Ashley was supposed to have a Havanna Nights party the week prior, but it got canceled due to the air quality issues and Canadian wildfires. Ashley said it was in the best interest of their half to cancel the party, and it was probably also in the best interest of her bank account. She doesn’t need to be throwing any parties right now.

At the party, once again it felt like we were going to get some kind of interesting dinner that never actually went anywhere. When the Real Housewives go to dinner on vacation, we’re expecting some stuff to go down. That just wasn’t the case, because these girls just don’t have much to talk about these days. It’s painful to admit.

During the dinner, Robyn and Candiace addressed their issues for the umpteenth time. Robyn accused Candiace of defamation. It felt like a stretch, but they both basically reaffirmed that there’s no resolving their issues. Season 8 truly feels like the season where the ladies have all thrown in the towel while trying to pretend like they’re friends. They know they aren’t buddies, and there’s no way to even fake it for the cameras.

Keiarna clocked in

On Day 3 of the trip, the ladies splintered off to do their separate activities. Keiarna, Robyn, Gizelle, Ashley, and Nneka all went shooting while the rest of the gang played tennis. With Keiarna splintered off from Candiace and Wendy, the ladies decided to grill the newbie about her friendship with Wendy. Finally, Keiarna is getting involved in the group dynamic. It only took 15 episodes.

Mainly, the other ladies wanted to know if Wendy had badmouthed them before introducing Keiarna to the group. According to Keiarna, that was never the case. Robyn almost seemed disappointed when Keiarna told them how Wendy hadn’t said anything bad about the group.

Keiarna explained, “The shade was obvious, but she never said, ‘I don’t like Gizelle.'”

Although Wendy didn’t say anything negative about the rest of the group, Keiarna explained that her friend’s biggest issue was with Nneka. In response, Nneka explained how she has attempted to make things right with Wendy to no avail. Keiarna said her peace talks with Wendy fell flat, and the two newbies started to bicker.

“Don’t stir pots that are already piping hot,” Nneka told Keiarna, who responded, “Is there another issue? Is there another issue?”

Clearly, Keiarna is riding hard for Wendy. It’s good to have solid friends, but watching her be a messenger pigeon for Wendy might not have been the best way for her to make a presence in the group. Plus, the fact that the ladies were firing guns in the background didn’t make the conversation any easier.

Karen’s on the fence

Real Housewives of Potomac Season 8, Episode 15

This week’s episode made it clearer than ever why Karen’s tagline talks about being a fence. She refuses to pick a side in any issue presented to the group. Gizelle called her out on it during the trip.

In Gizelle’s opinion, Candiace and Wendy’s attitude towards Grace crossed a line. She felt like Karen should have had her back, so the two OGs had a sitdown to address the discrepancy. Gizelle told her that she would appreciate some support. Karen didn’t care. She’s firmly on the fence, and she has no intentions of coming down.

Karen acts like riding the fence is some sort of noble, moral high ground. Watching it from the sidelines, it just feels like someone who isn’t playing the rules. How hard is it to have an opinion and share it?

In a confessional, Gizelle admitted that this could be a deal-breaker for her friendship with Karen. Once again, someone on this show is drawing a line in the sand, making it impossible to move forward.

Digging for gold

Real Housewives of Potomac Season 8, Episode 15 recap

The ladies celebrated Ashley’s birthday this week, and the entire episode kind of felt like a goodbye letter from Ashley. She reflected on the fact that she’s experienced eight birthdays, two babies, and divorce since starting the show. She’s come a long way, but what’s next? She clearly doesn’t know.

During the trip, Mia kind of clocked Ashley for being in this weird limbo phase of her divorce. It seems like a divorce storyline with no actual divorce, and it kind of doesn’t make sense. However, Ashley finally came clean about the arrangement she had with Michael. He’s paying for pretty much everything.

The way Ashley gave a soliloquy about her time on RHOP kind of felt like a goodbye message. Has her story concluded on this show? That’s still to be determined, but this Dominican Republic trip has come to an end. It felt like more of a success than the Austin trip, but it made it clear that this group would never be the way it once was.

The Real Housewives of Potomac continues on Bravo, Sunday nights at 8/7c.
