To get to Ellis Island, visitors must take a ferry from either Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Statue Cruises operates the ferry service.

Visitors should note that Statue Cruises is the only authorized concessionaire permitted to sell tickets and provide ferry access to Liberty and Ellis Islands. As such, visitors should avoid street vendors peddling tickets in and around Battery Park. Tickets sold by street vendors will not provide access to the grounds on Liberty Island and Ellis Island and the museums on each island – the Statue of Liberty Museum and Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration.

It is not. The Statue is located on Liberty Island, just a short distance from Ellis Island, home to the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration.

Visitors can tour the Main Building of the former immigration complex, which is now home to the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration. A world class experience, the Museum is home to an evocative series of exhibits and houses an amazing collections of artifacts from America’s history.

Yes. In 2001 the Foundation opened the American Family Immigration History Center at Ellis Island, which contains a searchable database of passenger manifests for Ellis Island and the Port of New York between 1820 and 1954. The database is also available online.

Statue of Liberty Tour from New Jersey

I was staying in New Jersey and wanted to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island without having to drive into NYC to catch the boat at Battery Park. These cruises also depart from Liberty Island State Park in Jersey City which was a great convenience and very easy. I went online to purchase tickets and was able to book access into the Pedestal at the Statue of Liberty. NOTE: Access to the Crown was booked up 3 months ahead of time!!! The visit was great and the boats were comfortable and prompt. NOTE: The lines for boarding the boats going back to Liberty Park in Jersey City were MUCH shorter than Battery Park!!! The boats were also ALOT less crowded! Of course you have to go through security prior to initial boarding. It was $7 to park the car. The State Park was easy to find and worth returning and spending some time at. The views of Manhattan, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are spectacular from there. There are lots of walking trails and a nice marina with a restaurant nearby. You can also catch a ferry to the World Trade Center from there. You can receive a discounted price on that ferry with the Statue Cruise ticket. I HIGHLY recommend using Liberty State Park for the Statue Cruises from the New Jersey side!

statue city cruises new jersey tours

Everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed our trip to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. It was a terrific value as well. We thought we might miss the 10 AM ferry on Sunday due to a mishap at our hotel. I called customer service and was SHOCKED to get a live person on the phone. Unfortunately, all the other cruises for the day were sold out. He told us that there was a chance that if we arrived after 10 we would make it, but there were no guarantees. Fortunately, we made it! It was very comforting to get a live person to talk everything through with. I highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance as it allows for expedited boarding. The ferry was nice. There was plenty of seating and they sell snacks on board. The only critique I have is that they could have better directional signage at the Battery Park entry point. If it weren't for our thorough taxi cab driver, we wouldn't have known what to do. The other half of our party was dropped off 3 blocks past the entry point and had to figure out how to make it back to board the ferry.

After reading so many negative reviews I was really prepared for the worst, but I have to say that we had an excellent experience. We bought reserve tickets for 9 AM, a few days in advance, online, intending to go on the first ferry of the day at 9:30 AM. The ticket purchase was confusing until I figured out that your reserve time was the time you would be given access to the pre-boarding security area, not the time of your ferry departure. We arrived at the dock/Clinton Castle about 8:40 AM expecting long lines and waiting. There appeared to be a few hundred people already there, but don't be intimidated - the ferry holds 600+ people! While in line, outside, enjoying the view, an employee scanned our tickets. Seemed better to have reserve tickets rather than Flex tickets because they let all the reserve people on the boat first. After waiting about 10 minutes they opened the doors and people started moving inside to go through airport security type screeners. That process went very smoothly and quickly and we were heading back outside the building to the boat ramp within about 10 min. We were sitting on the top deck by 9:05am, and to my surprise, once fully loaded the boat left early at 9:15 AM. This was a Thursday morning in April, a sunny pleasant day with a forecast of upper 50s temps.

FYI, This review is just for Statue Cruises, the ferry company that has the monopoly on transporting people to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Looking through the reviews, I wonder how many people were truly reviewing Statue Cruises (the ferry company) versus the National Park itself. If I was reviewing the National Park properties of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, this would be a 5 star review. We purchased our tickets online so I thought we could get in line immediately. Instead we STILL had to wait in line at a kiosk to check in and then wait in yet another line to board the boat. Staff were rude and unhelpful and the boarding area at Battery Park is chaos. The boats are extremely overcrowded. I seriously wonder how often they are inspected by the authorities because I have considered reporting them for overcrowded boats and unsafe conditions. Not only are there no seats, there are also no places to stand at the rail. We could not even find a pole or other secure object to hold onto to keep our balance in the moving boat. People were packed in like sardines on a busy subway with nothing to hold onto. I was especially concerned about the boarding areas at Liberty and Ellis Island. They are very poorly organized. They herd up a huge mass of people with no security. We had to wait for 2 ferries to come and go before there was finally room on the third ferry for us to board. It was over an hour wait (at each island) on a very cold day out in the elements. Because people are cold and impatient, when a boat arrives, hundreds of people push forward all at once in hopes of getting to the front barrier. Someone is bound to be trampled. Honestly, you heard it here first- SOMEONE WILL BE TRAMPLED! They need to set up switchback-type gates, like you see at Disneyland. This would safely and effectively control the huge crowds. I would be terrified of bringing small children into this riot. If a child falls, he will be lost and killed. One last note, we visited on a cold Tuesday in early spring. It was not a busy weekend and it was not a beautiful summer day. If our experience was this chaotic, I cannot imagine a beautiful summer weekend.

We were there in some pretty cold, windy, and then rainy conditions, and the staff was very professional and helpful. We had a great visit to the Statue of Liberty and then Ellis Island. The boats were clean and well kept and the crew was very professional..not just a bunch of teenagers working a second job. The crew kept things clean including the restrooms and the snack bar. The snack bar was even better than expected. would definitely recommend the cruise!

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis island are a must see. If you'd like to go inside either, this is the only cruise that you can go on. It is contracted by the National Parks Service. I took the advise of many of the Trip Advisor contributors and bought tickets online, which saved me from waiting in one line. Then we had the choice between three lines. The employees were not helpful and acted like anyone who asked a question was an annoyance. FYI all the lines go to the same place. Next we went through airport style security before waiting in the line to get on the boat. The whole experience was poorly organized. I had tickets for noon but not once did anyone say anything about time. So I really do not think it matters what time you show up. Come early. By the way, we showed up at 11:45 and got on a 12:45 boat. I appreciate the reviews on this site. But I think many of the reviews are related to the statue and not the actual cruise.

The Best Statue of Liberty Tours

The Statue of Liberty is America's most iconic and enduring symbol of freedom. A gift from the French, "The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" – its official name – was dedicated in 1886. It was often the first thing immigrants to the United States saw as they sailed to Ellis Island. The statue holds a torch in one hand and a tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence in the other. She stands a little more than 300 feet tall and is made of copper, which has oxidized over time to create her signature green patina. To make the most of your visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, consider these key tips.

Several independent tour companies offer tours to the Statue of Liberty that include private guides and extra perks like priority ferry boarding. Some also combine trips to the Statue of Liberty with visits to other NYC attractions , such as the 9/11 Memorial. However, these companies are not official vendors of the national park service, meaning there may be unnecessary charges.

Statue of Liberty Cruises

One of the best ways to view Lady Liberty is from the water. Consider one of these Statue of Liberty cruises for a unique vantage point.

How to Tour the Statue of Liberty On Your Own

statue of liberty torch seen from the bottom

Getting There: You'll need to take a ferry to reach Liberty Island. Statue City Cruises is the official ferry provider for the National Park Service, and the only ferry service authorized to provide transportation to and from Liberty Island. Before you board, you'll go through an airport-style security screening. The ferry departs from two locations: Battery Park in New York City and Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. Ferry operators recommend arriving about 30 minutes ahead of your reserved time.

You can reach Battery Park via public transportation, such as the subway or bus. The 4 and 5 trains stop at Bowling Green; the M5, M15 and M20 bus routes also stop within walking distance of the ferry. Driving is an option, but parking is limited. If you're planning to do more sightseeing, heed the advice of reviewers and sign up for a hop-on, hop-off bus tour , many of which stop at Battery Park.

For ferry departures from New Jersey's Liberty State Park, you can arrive via the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Plenty of parking is available, for a fee, if you choose to drive.

Tickets: Tickets, which cost $24.50 for adults and $12 for kids ages 4 to 12, cover round-trip ferry transportation and access to specific park attractions. To access both the pedestal and the crown, you need to reserve and purchase timed tickets before your trip. Tickets to the pedestal sell out quickly, and you'll likely need to book tickets to the crown at least three months in advance.

Experiences: Visitors can stop by the Information Center and explore the Statue of Liberty Museum The museum houses artifacts, including the original torch, as well as multimedia displays detailing the statue's history and creation. Meanwhile, the on-site Information Center offers brochures and tour schedules. Kids can join the Junior Ranger program at the center by picking up a booklet of activities to complete to earn a special badge. Any visitor is welcome to take a free Park Ranger guided tour of the statue's exterior, which explains how the statue was made, its symbolism and more, or use a self-guided audio tour.

The pedestal stands at about half the height of the monument and boasts panoramic views of New Jersey, New York City, the New York Harbor and Ellis Island. Brave-hearted visitors will want to take the narrow, double-helix steps to the statue's crown for a bird's-eye view of the city. There are 162 steps from the top of the pedestal to the top of the crown. There is no elevator and the park service discourages this trek for visitors who suffer from heart and respiratory conditions, claustrophobia, acrophobia and vertigo. Children must be at least 42 inches tall to safely climb the stairs.

What to Bring: You will need an ID to pick up your tickets from will call (if you choose to get your tickets there). If you plan to visit the crown, each ticket holder will need to show a valid ID along with the ticket that bears their name; minors without ID are exempt from this policy. Locker facilities to store personal items during your visit are available at the base of the statue; lockers accept quarters only.

No large bags (carry-on luggage, large suitcases, etc.) are allowed on Liberty Island. Backpacks, strollers, large umbrellas and food and drink are prohibited inside the statue.

Restrooms: Restrooms are available in the gift shop and in the statue's lobby.

Traveler Tips: Travelers love seeing the Statue of Liberty up close. Multiple tourists recommend a morning visit to make sure you have enough time to see everything, especially if you combine your trip to Lady Liberty with a visit to nearby Ellis Island. If you purchase a ferry ticket for 2 p.m. or later, you will not be able to go to both islands, but will have to pick either Liberty or Ellis Island. Reviewers recommend allotting at least half a day to see everything and suggest going in the morning to avoid crowds. They also stress booking tickets to the crown several months in advance to make sure you obtain tickets.
