Tesla's Q4 'will be massive' Says Global Equities Research Analyst After Fremont Factory Visit

Tesla's Q4 'will be massive' Says Global Equities Research Analyst After Fremont Factory Visit

Photo: Toru Hanai/Bloomberg via Getty Images

Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry is confident that Tesla's Q4 2021 deliveries "will be massive." After visiting the Fremont factory, he is confident that the production and delivery of the entire vehicle lineup look very strong. In keeping with the tradition of visiting Tesla's Fremont factory on Christmas Day, Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry again visited this Christmas. The manufacturer's holiday activity, among other things, provides a good indication of the company's efforts to achieve strong results at the end of the quarter and year. After visiting the factory in California, Chowdhry said he is confident that Q4 deliveries "will be massive," noting that production, shipping, and delivery activity is extremely strong, all through Q4 2021. He also mentioned that production, shipments, and delivery of Model S Plaid looks strong too. The conclusions that Chowdhry usually draws after such checks often reflect the real situation and are a good indicator for investors' own predictions. For example, last year, after a visit to the Fremont factory on December 26, the analyst noted that such strong activity at the factory is evidence that Tesla could meet its 2020 production target of 500,000 vehicles. At the end of the year, it turned out that Chowdhry was right, although a number of Wall Street analysts held a different position. To date, all Tesla figures for Q4 and for the whole of 2021 look very optimistic. The company did not give forecasts for the number of deliveries, however hinted that there could be about 750,000. Nevertheless, it is already becoming obvious that the manufacturer will surpass this number, since in only three quarters of the year, Tesla delivered 627,350 vehicles. Traditionally, the company's delivery figures have been growing from quarter to quarter. But even assuming they remain at the 240,000 vehicles level, as in Q3, the total number of deliveries will be almost 870,000. However, the number of deliveries in Q4 undoubtedly will be higher, so the final figures for 2021 are likely to be more than 900,000 vehicles.

Tesla (TSLA) on track for “monstrous” Q4: Global Equities Research

trip chowdhry global equities research

With the third quarter ending in a few days, Tesla ( NASDAQ:TSLA ) analysts are sharing their expectations for the fourth quarter. Tesla has high targets for 2023, and for Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry, the electric vehicle maker is on track for a blockbuster fourth quarter.

Tesla is hoping to produce and sell about 1.8 million vehicles in 2023, though CEO Elon Musk has hinted that the company could end the year with a capacity of 2 million vehicles. To accomplish this, Tesla would need to finish the third quarter on a strong note and complete the fourth quarter with record numbers.

As noted in a  Street Insider  report, Chowdhry noted that he is expecting a “monstrous” Q4 from the electric vehicle maker. The analyst also reiterated an “Overweight” rating and a $350 price target for Tesla. Chowdhry provided a number of key comments based on his observations of the company.

As per the analyst, the Fremont Factory’s shutdown in the third quarter seemed to be shorter than expected . For context, CEO Elon Musk noted during the second quarter earnings call that Tesla’s production in Q3 would be a little down due to “a lot of factory upgrades.”

“We continue to target 1.8 million vehicle deliveries this year, although we expect that Q3 production will be a little bit down because we’ve got some shutdowns to for — a lot of factory upgrades. So, just probably a slight decrease in production in Q3 for sort of global factory upgrades,” Musk said.

The longtime Tesla bull also noted that the demand for the Tesla Model S seems to be increasing, with the analyst stating that the third quarter may represent the highest quarterly sales of the Model S Plaid to date. Such a statement may sound overly ambitious, though it may be feasible considering the price cuts that were implemented on the flagship sedan as of late.

Tesla analyst Trip Chowdhry expects two versions of the Cybertruck to be unveiled in March 2022

cybertruck lights

Everyone is eagerly anticipating the product roadmap update from Tesla CEO Elon Musk at the upcoming earnings call scheduled for January 26, 2022.

One of the biggest updates expected from Musk is in regards to the final design of the Cybertruck and possibly its expected launch date.

However Global Equities Research Analyst Trip Chowdhry thinks we will have to wait a little longer to get more details.

After visiting the Fremont factory last month, Chowdhry believes Tesla will unveil the final design of the Cybertruck at a special event in March 2022.

Not only that, he believes Tesla will unveil two different version of the electric truck that will have “significant tweaks” compared to the original prototype.

One of the versions will also be about 15% to 20% smaller than the original design, Chowdhry says.

So far we have only seen drone footage of the latest Cybertruck design , and while it is certainly different than what we have seen previously, its design held largely true to the original.

We have also heard no news from any of our sources about two different versions of the Cybertruck, but Tesla could be keeping this information close to the chest until it is officially unveiled.

What do you think? Will Tesla release two versions of the Cybertruck? Let us know in the comments below.

Tripadvisor Sale: Apollo’s Interest and Possible Scenarios

Dennis Schaal , Skift

March 6th, 2024 at 4:17 PM EST

Even Tripadvisor would agree that the sum of its parts is likely worth more the whole. That's what a potential buyer is likely thinking.

Dennis Schaal

Ever since Liberty Tripadvisor disclosed in early February that it was exploring a potential transaction in which itself and Tripadvisor would be acquired in an all-cash deal, speculation was rife that a private equity firm was behind the possible move.

Apollo Global Management, one such private equity firm, has been looking into that acquisition, Bloomberg reported, citing sources who didn’t want to be identified. That exploration is said to be at an early phase and may not come to fruition.

Liberty Tripadvisor wields a majority of Tripadvisor’s voting power at 57% so would be the decider on any transaction. Greg Maffei is the CEO of Liberty Media and chairman of Tripadvisor.

Tripadvisor’s shares were up about 1.5% late afternoon Wednesday after the report about Apollo’s interest.

Other players could get involved, as well.

Apollo in the Travel Industry

Apollo has been very active in the travel industry over the past couple of decades. Apollo helped fund Expedia Group during the the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 when Expedia needed liquidity, and an Apollo SPAC merged with American Express Global Business Travel to take it public in 2022.

Other Apollo acquisitions in travel included Oceania (2007); 50% of Norwegian Cruise Line (2007); Harrah’s (2008), which became Ceasar’s Entertainment; Diamond Resorts (2016); and with a group of other investors, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings (2023).

Tripadvisor Mulling Offer(s)

Tripadvisor has formed an independent committee to vet any offers that may come and has retained a financial advisor.

Analysts and travel industry insiders look to private equity as likely suitors for Tripadvisor. In addition to Apollo, other names that have come up as potentially having interest in a deal could be Permira, CVC, EQT and Softbank, which has investments in both GetYourGuide and Klook.

Big potential strategic partners, ranging from Booking Holdings to Expedia and Google, either wouldn’t be interested or might be scared away because of regulatory hurdles in the U.S. and abroad, the thinking goes.

Potential Scenarios for a Tripadvisor Acquisition

What might Apollo or any private equity buyer do with Tripadvisor?

Tours and activities leader Viator is the fastest-growing and the all-star in Tripadvisor’s portfolio of brands and products. In speaking to travel industry insiders since news broke of a potential deal, most agreed that buying Tripadvisor and then selling Viator made the most sense.

In 2021, Tripadvisor filed confidential paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to spin out Viator into a public company. Nothing came of it, however, because the IPO market turned sour, with investors favoring profitable companies over growth companies that were deep in the red.

Tripadvisor CEO Matt Goldberg said recently — but prior to Liberty Tripadvisor stating that there was acquisition interest — that Tripadvisor hasn’t ruled out a Viator spinoff, but wasn’t focused on it.

One former chief financial officer of a publicly traded company said a potential buyer might acquire Tripaddvisor and then try to sell Viator to rivals GetYourGuide or Klook for a revenue multiple. The ideal scenario would be to team up with GetYourGuide and Klook in a pre-agreed deal to facilitate a sale.

The private equity firm buying Tripadvisor could then keep Tripadvisor’s hotel metasearch product, innovate and remove costs.

Tripadvisor’s hotel metasearch is still the largest part of the company, but Google has cut into its market share, and the service is stagnating. In 2023, the Brand Tripadvisor segment, which includes hotel metasearch and business subscriptions, saw adjusted EBITDA rise just 1% to $348 million. Revenue tilted up 7% to $1.03 billion. Brand Tripadvisor — until recently it was called Tripadvisor Core — has been the biggest revenue generator for the company in recent years.

Other Scenarios

Another Tripadvisor brand, TheFork, which might be called the OpenTable of Europe, isn’t performing as well as Viator, and “doesn’t move the needle,” the former CFO said.

Another analyst said he didn’t believe there was much CEO Matt Goldberg could do to turn around Tripadvisor, although he’s trying.

“I don’t think there’s much of anything Matt can do to turn the company around,” he said. “Sell it/chop it up into pieces. That may happen.”

Another analyst wondered if a major player, including one with generative AI ambitions, might want Tripadvisor’s hotel metasearch and user reviews for its rich trove of data. “Sell it to Google,” the analyst said.

Google, though, has its own much larger data assets.

“Assuming this is classic leveraged buyout, a buyer would take out a lot of debt,” another analyst said. “You would sell off Viator because it would command the growth multiple and generate the cash to pay down your interest burden. Then you own Trip Core for free.”

Perhaps Softbank, which has investments in GetYourGuide and Klook, could buy Viator from a private equity buyer and then combine the troika into a tours and activities super mashup. That would grab the attention, though, of competition authorities.

According to Chowdhry, many of the Model X deliveries are taking place in California. The analyst added that the close proximity to the company's factories "enables Tesla to have a very tight feedback and correction loop" if any issues are discovered.

Separately, Chowdhry is not concerned over the rising competition that Tesla is facing in the electric vehicle space. "Competition is completely clueless," he wrote.

The analyst compared Tesla's leadership position in electric vehicles to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL )'s dominance in the smartphone market. He added that many manufacturers claimed to have come up with an "iPhone killer" device, but have consistently fallen short due to an inferior product.

"The question to ask these Tesla Killers are ... Where is your GigaFactory, Where is your CloudComputing platform, where is your MachineLearning Platform, where is your Supercharger Network, where is your Store," Chowdhry concluded.

Shares of Tesla were trading higher by nearly 2 percent Wednesday morning at $241.42.
