Quebec City, 4 Hours from Ottawa

Fall in love with the beautiful city of Quebec City. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Europe with its charming cobblestone streets. Wander Old Quebec City and make sure to save some time on your trip to visit Île d’Orléans and Montmorency Falls. This is a great destination to add to your visit to Montreal .

Niagara Falls

You’ll be blown away by the natural world wonder of Niagara Falls. I’ll be honest, the town of Niagara Falls felt very touristy BUT use this guide for hidden gems and more incredible sights to make your trip to Niagara Falls incredible.

There is so much to do in Toronto I feel like each road trip here has been completely different. Whether you want to explore a specific neighbourhood, dive into the diverse food scene or go for a special event. There’s always so much happening in the city. I always love visiting Distillery District and going to a new spot for brunch. Here are some restaurants to check out while you’re visiting:

Stratford is a beautiful town that has a strong influence of Shakespeare. This is a great spot to visit to enjoy the arts scene, beautiful parks and shops and restaurants. Check the Instagram post below for ideas while you’re there. This would be a great addition to your Toronto road trip.

Only 4 hours from Ottawa, Vermont is an incredible spot for a road trip whether you want to swim at the base of waterfalls in summer, admire the fall foliage in autumn or hit the slopes in winter.

Check out posts on my sister blog, Spirit of a Traveller:

Stowe, Vermont, is where you’ll get those postcard photos of Vermont. It has amazing ski hills and is an incredible spot for fall colours as you drive through the mountains. I have a full guide to Stowe, Vermont, below.

Longer Roadtrips from Ottawa

East coast roadtrips from ottawa, 7 day roadtrip through quebec.

I did this road trip through Quebec a few years ago and it was such an amazing opportunity to see more of this beautiful province. From vibrant cities to whale watching, there is such a unique mix of things you can enjoy. Use this itinerary to guide your visit . Have longer? Add on Gaspesie below.

Drive the 132 in Gaspesie and take in the view of the rolling hills. Make sure to leave lots of time to stop in towns like Gaspé and Percé to see the local attractions from the famous Percé rock to Forillon National Park to hidden waterfalls and unique lighthouses. I loved road tripping through Gaspesie. We visited in Fall and had an amazing time but if you visit in Summer you’ll be able to enjoy the water more!

Saint John’s, New Brunswick

Saint John’s has an amazing food scene, their unique Moonlight Bazaar (can’t be missed) and the Bay of Fundy. Fly in or add Saint John’s to your east coast itinerary. I have a full guide for your visit here .

Prince Edward Island

From red sand beaches to the stunning coastline, Prince Edward needs to be on your Canadian road trip bucket list. Take a few days to drive around the whole island or go at a leisurely pace in one of the areas. Here are some ideas for while you’re visiting. Cape Breton is another island you need to add to your trip while you’re there.

Cape Breton

Cape Breton is such a unique part of Canada. Enjoy mountain views and seaside views in the same day on the world-famous Cabot Trail. This destination needs to be on your Canadian bucketlist. Summer is an amazing time to soak up the beaches and Fall is a wonderful time to admire the autumn colours. Use my guide to Cape Breton for everything you need to do while you visit.

United States Road Trips from Ottawa

My family did lots of road trips through the states when I was a kid. I have so many fond memories of visiting a new state and all it had to offer. I recommend adding on a few states if you have longer to visit:

From beautiful upstate New York to New York City, there’s plenty to enjoy in New York. If you’re visiting New York City at Christmas you need to check out this guide .

I visited Boston in the fall a few years ago and loved it. Boston is a beautiful city with lots of history. We stayed in a central location and walked most places. I’d go back in a heartbeat. Here’s my guide to everything you need to do while visiting Boston.

18 Awesome Day Trips from Ottawa (Under 2 Hours Away) + Maps

One of the best things about Ottawa it’s proximity to other amazing places. There are so many beautiful small towns, outdoor adventures, and nearby cities that make for fun day trips from Ottawa. Winter, summer, and fall many of the small towns and park near Ottawa are beautiful and have different activities and scenery to offer.

My criteria for a day trip is somewhere that you can drive to (or reach by train, or bus) in under 2 hours. Get an early start, and you can be there before breakfast and enjoy a full day exploring before you head home. I like to spend my summers taking day trips from Ottawa in between exploring Ottawa itself. Here are some of my favourite places!

Day Trips from Ottawa

1. merrickville [1 hour from ottawa].

Merrickville is tiny little town less than an hour from Ottawa, and it’s perfect for a relaxing day trip. The main street (St Lawrence) is all independent shops that sell clothes, soaps, garden decorations, and beautiful glass pieces. Merrickville is along the Rideau River, and part way across the bridge from one side to the other is a small island that is home to the Merrickville Ruins. The ruins were once a woolen mill, and today you can explore the ruins and there’s a small museum in the main building.

Don’t miss the Goose & Gridon pub for the perfect Instagram photo opp, or the beautiful Stella Luna location on Main St West. It’s my favourite Stella Luna location, and few people know it’s there! Get yourself a gelato and explore the town.

2. Perth [1 hour from Ottawa]

The beautiful little town of Perth, Ontario, is the perfect spot for your next day trip. There is so much to see and do in things historic town, ranging from quirky to adventurous. Discover a Mammoth Cheese that is taller than you, have lunch on a waterfront patio, check out beautiful shops in historic buildings, and visit the Perth Wildlife Reserve or kayak the Tays. Find all of these activities and more, and great foods and restaurant recommendations in my blog post about Things to do in Perth, Ontario .

3. Chutes de Plaisance [40 minutes from Ottawa]

Pack a picnic and go for a drive to one of the best-kept-secrets in the region. Chutes de Plaisance is a massive waterfall only a 40 minute day trip from Ottawa. I was amazed to discover that there was a waterfall this big so close! It is so large that you cannot see the whole thing at once. Explore the waterfall by following trails alongside it and stopping at the three observation points.

There are beautiful picnic areas and washrooms at Chutes de Plaisance. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a day there. This is the perfect day trip from Ottawa if you want to enjoy time outside. Day passes are required and can be purchased on arrival.

Chutes de Plaisance

4. Bonnechere Caves [1.5 hours from Ottawa]

The Bonnechere Caves are an awesome, unique way to spend the day. Most of the day trips from Ottawa in this list are small towns that keep you above ground, so the Bonnechere Caves are a little different! My boyfriend and I went one day, and really enjoyed it. There are interesting fossils to look at before you descend in to the caves, and the caves themselves are incredible. Take a picnic lunch with you or stop in Renfrew afterwards for lunch! There’s not a lot else near the Bonnechere Caves, but they’re still worth the drive. You can crawl through a small tunnel within the caves, and you get to experience the caves in the dark.

The caves are open all summer and you can access them on a guided tour.  Guided tours start every 20 to 30 minutes and are about one hour long. There’s no pre-registration required, just show up. Admission is $19 for adults. It’s cool in the caves, so even if it’s a warm summer day bring a light sweater or jacket. Wear sneakers or running shoes!

Bonnechere Caves temporarily closed due to public health measures. Check before you go.

Bonnechere Caves

5. Wakefield [30 minutes from Ottawa]

Wakefield is already one of the most famous day trips from Ottawa, and with good reason. Wakefield is a lovely town in Quebec, so getting there from Ottawa includes a scenic drive through the Gatineau Park. Come for a walk in the town, and to see the red bridge. On warm days in the summer, bring your swimsuit so you can hang out by the water below the bridge.

If you want a relaxing day, the Wakefield Hotel & Spa is located in Wakefield along the Gatineau River.

The best pizza MJMD Pizza de Luigi is some of the best pizza around. It’s handmade in a wood oven, and tastes  amazing . I also highly recommend Pipolinka Bakery for great cookies and Le Hibou for lunch. They have delicious vegetarian and vegan options!

Ottawa to Wakefield day trip

6. Brockville [1 hour 8 minutes from Ottawa]

Small town, unique landmarks, and great waterfront views? Check! Brockville is an amazing day trip from Ottawa if you love small towns but still want some interesting places to see and great activity options. Park near the water and explore the town and the waterfront. Find Canada’s oldest train tunnel, discover the tall ships, or get out on the water yourself with a cruise to the 1,000 Islands or a kayak adventure.

When you are ready for a bite to eat, I recommend Don’s Fish & Chips or The Sweet Little Café. Both places offer meals that you can take with you down to Blockhouse Island, the waterfront area in Brockville that is a perfect place to relax and watch boats go by while enjoying your meal. For more ideas, check out my day trip guide: things to do in Brockville .

Things to do in Brockville

7. Morris Island Conservation Area [47 minutes from Ottawa]

Escape the city and enjoy an amazing day in nature at Morris Island Conservation Area. I recommend this day trip from Ottawa if you are looking for a little bit of peace and quiet. Morris Island Conservation Area has trails, picnic areas, calm water for kayaking or paddling, and it feels like you have left the city far behind. Stay for 4 hours with a day parking pass ($6 when I visited – check the website for the most up to date price information). Check out my Day Trip Guide: Morris Island Conservation Area for more details on activities and what to expect.

Morris Island Conservation Area

8. Chelsea [30 minutes from Ottawa]

Day trips from Ottawa to Chelsea are always awesome – it’s the place that I go most often when I feel like being outside the city. The interaction of Chemin Scott and Chemin du Lac Meech is the nicest area. Park at the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre, and go for a short walk along the Sugarbush trail. It’s beautiful all seasons! Come back in to Chelsea and explore the main street, stop for ice cream, or lunch.  Biscotte & Cie is great place for drink and a sandwich or pastry, and La Cigale is one of my favourite ice cream places.

The Nordik Spa is also located in Chelsea, and it’s a the perfect place for a relaxing day no matter the season. I’ve visited the Nordik Spa in both the summer and winter , it’s always amazing.

The Nordik Spa

9. Gatineau Park [20 minutes from Ottawa]

Love hiking and the great outdoors? Of course you do – and how could you not with a view like this. Gatineau Park is just across the river from Ottawa. Those of us who call Ottawa home are so incredibly fortunate to live next to this amazing place, it’s so close and so much considered to be like a part of Ottawa that putting it on a day trips from Ottawa list might even be a stretch! Hike, cycle, or make your way to Meech Lake and enjoy the beach.

There are hiking trails for every one in Gatineau Park, no matter the level or difficult that you want.  Use this guide to the Gatineau Park Trails to find your next hike!

Gatineau Park day trip

10. Montreal [2 hours from Ottawa]

Montreal is one of the most interesting cities in Canada. There is so much history, and so many beautiful places to discover! Montreal is only 2 hours away, and you can have any day trip experience you want here whether it’s spending a day in the botanical gardens, eating in Mile End, visiting museums, or exploring Old Montreal! Or, even roller coaster. La Ronde is a fun amusement park day trip.

I have several Montreal guides to help you plan your day trip (or a longer visit to Montreal!)

11. Calabogie [1 hour from Ottawa]

Calabogie is a bit of day trip gem, so this one stays between you and me! There aren’t many day trips from Ottawa that are well-kept secrets… but this one is. My friends and I drove to Calabogie Peaks Resort to hike Skywalk Trail to Eagle’s Nest Lookout. There are a lot of different trails that connect together, so you can take as long (or as short) a route as you want to Eagle’s Nest.

After your hike, relax at the beach by the resort with some snacks and drinks. There are only a few food options on site, so bring your own food. We didn’t kayak, but there are kayaks available for rent too and the lake is beautiful and calm! Calabogie is a popular ski destination in the winter, but most people don’t know what a lovely place it is in the summer.

Here’s the full guide on hiking to Eagle’s Nest and enjoying a day in Calabogie!

Eagle's Nest Lookout Calabogie

12. Almonte [1 hour from Ottawa]

Almonte is a lovely mill town along the Canadian Mississippi River. I went on a day trip from Ottawa to Almonte last summer and surprised by how many great cafés and cute shops there are! And, there’s an amazing waterfall going through the middle of the town. Walk the River Walk from Heirloom Cafe & Bistro to Almonte town hall to see it.

The inventor of basketball, James Naismith, was born and raised just outside of Almonte and you will find a statue of him in town too!

13. The 1000 Islands [1.5 hours from Ottawa]

The 1000 Islands is an exceptional destination for a day trip from Ottawa. Only 1.5 hours away, 1000 Islands has everything from adventurous activities to relaxing patios. On a day trip, take a boat tour in the 1000 Islands and spend some time exploring the town of Gananoque. Enjoy a view from above at the 1000 Islands Tower, or go hiking at one of the many trails in the area.

This is easily one of my favourite places that I have ever visited. If you  haven’t  already visited the 1000 Islands, make it your next day trip! Check out my full 1000 Islands Visitor Guide  for a detailed itinerary and restaurant recommendations.

1000 Islands Hotels

14. Westport [1.5 hours from Ottawa]

Westport is one of my favourite small towns, mainly because of the amazing view from above that you can see from Foley mountain. There is a wonderful, family run vineyard just outside of town and the few bakeries and restaurants in town (it’s a really small place!) are all really good. This is one of the quainter day trips from Ottawa, perfect if you want a relaxing day.

Spend the morning exploring the hiking trails on Foley mountain, and the afternoon exploring the town and visiting a nearby vineyard. Check out my blog post of t hings to do in Westport .

Ottawa to Westport

15. Gatineau [10 minutes from Ottawa]

Gatineau is just across the river – it’s so close that it blends right in to Ottawa so while this isn’t a day trip that requires driving, it is one if you haven’t yet explored Gatineau! The Culture Trail was introduced in 2018, and it’s a great way to see the area. Follow the red line from Jacques Cartier Park and it will take you all through Gatineau.

Make sure to take the detour onto Laval Street to see the beautiful Gatineau umbrella street. There are plenty of great patios here to stop for a drink. The trail is 2km long and will lead you along the Ruisseau de la Brasseurs, to a restaurant called Les Brasseurs du Temps. The beer is excellent, and this restaurant has a lovely patio. Best of all, there’s an amazing (and massive) museum in the basement that goes all through the history of beer in Canada.

16. Kingston [2 hours from Ottawa]

Kingston makes a great day trip from Ottawa for summer. Kingston is a city with lots of history. Make sure to book your  penitentiary tour  in advance.  The penitentiary was at one time home to some of Canada’s most notorious criminals and today offers guided tours that are very popular.

Other things to check out include Fort Henry, built during the war of 1812. One hour guided tours depart regularly. For another bit of history, hop aboard a   Trolley Tour . I’ve heard that Chez Piggy or Wooden Heads Gourmet Pizza or great places for lunch!

Kingston day trip

17. Mont Tremblant [2 hours from Ottawa]

Here’s another popular winter destination that is also a summer gem – Mont Tremblant ! Truth be told, a lot more people know about Tremblant than Calabogie but it’s still less popular in the summer than in the winter.

Mont Tremblant is one of the best, multi-season day trips from Ottawa. Go to Tremblant for skiing, snowshoeing, and cozy cafés in the winter. Come summer enjoy hiking, luge rides down the mountain, cycling, and exploring. The best part about Mont Tremblant is the pedestrian village. It’s easy to walk around, without having to worry about cars! It’s also a very dog friendly area, so bring your fur friend for the day.

If you’re visiting in the summer, Mont Tremblant National Park is a must-visit. It’s got stunning scenery and hiking trails with all different levels of difficult – from kick jaunts to a waterfall to long treks to breathtaking lookouts.

18. Omega Park [1 hour from Ottawa]

Truth be told, I think that Omega Park is mentioned in every Ontario or Quebec blog post that I have. I  love this place. Omega Park makes a great day trip, or you can stay the night ! Omega Park is another one of the all-season day trips from Ottawa, it’s stunning summer or winter .

Omega Park entry is just under $30 per person. Get there right when it opens (usually 10 AM) and drive the loop. In the summer, you can take a wagon ride out to the farm. Come winter, enjoy a sleigh ride through the snow.

10 road trip ideas from the author of 'Ottawa Road Trips: Your Weekend Getaway Guide'

Even with gas prices at an all-time high, Laura Byrne Paquet will make you want to pack up the car, fill the tank, and head off for a “close to home” adventure.

Byrne Paquet doesn’t call herself a travel writer. She says instead, she is a writer who travels.

And some of her favourite trips  are close to her Ottawa home.

“I’m an unabashed fan of this region. I love meeting the people, trying the foods, learning the history, exploring the trails—everything, really,” says Byrne Paquet.

“It helps me feel rooted in this place. I like knowing where my food comes from, who was here before me, why our buildings look the way they do, where the rivers flow. And I don’t think I’m the only one.”

Fortunately, the award-winning writer and ardent explorer shares her findings in Ottawa Road Trips: Your Weekend Getaway Guide .

family road trip from ottawa

It’s her third published nod to everything fabulous about our region and it’s a gift to those who aren’t enthusiastic jetsetters, an adventure guide for those who like to stay closer to home.

This book is on the heels of the successful Ottawa Road Trips: Your 100 km Getaway Guide  published last year.

“That came about because Ron Corbett—who I’d worked with a million years ago in my first job out of school, as a reporter at Ottawa Business News—called and suggested the idea. We pulled that first book together incredibly quickly, as we realized things were about to open up a bit that summer.”

Corbett is a co-founder of  Ottawa Press and Publishing and features many authors, who like him, are dedicated to the stories of this region.

"Laura is one of the most talented and diligent journalists working in Ottawa, and travelling is her great passion,” says Corbett.

“Her Ottawa Road Trips books, and blog, are becoming the definitive day-tripping and road-tripping guides to the Ottawa area. Her research is exhaustive. No other guidebook comes close to replicating what Laura has done."

Corbett emphasizes that even if you consider yourself a local, these books will ensure you are more “in-the-know”.

"These books are filled with places you've probably never seen, and people you've never met. It's just a wonderful local book."

“I’d love it if these books encouraged people to get out and connect—especially after the last two years, when it has been so hard to do so,” says Byrne Paquet.

“The small communities that depend on visitors are really eager to welcome people back. And I think many people don’t realize the huge variety of experiences available right in our backyard.

“You can sit in an aircraft simulator, leap from Canada’s highest bungee jump, raft some of Canada’s best whitewater, go to a concert in a cave, have dinner under Canada’s highest lift lock, zip line above a waterfall, learn to blow glass or bake a soufflé or any of a million other things that might float your boat—all without getting on a plane.”

The official publication date for: “Ottawa Road Trips: Your Weekend Getaway Guide” is May 1 . You can pre-order the book, but if you want to get a jumpstart on the road trips these are some of Byrne Paquet’s top picks from the book.

family road trip from ottawa

1. Alexandria - Priest's Mill

"Alexandria has some pretty shops and restaurants. Priest’s Mill Arts Centre is a combined studio and exhibition space for local artists. You can see people doing glass blowing and sign up for lessons in that and other types of art. In the same old mill building, the North Glengarry restaurant has a deck overlooking a waterfall. And across the street, Buvette du Marché is a great gastropub."

family road trip from ottawa

2. Calabogie - Eagle’s Nest

"You can reach this gorgeous lookout via a short hike from Calabogie, but I have a few caveats. First, the trail will still be muddy for a few weeks. Give the forest time to heal from the winter before putting pressure on the trail. Second, this hike is quite easy and it has great rewards, so it became VERY popular during the pandemic. It was almost loved to death and created a lot of traffic hassles for local residents. So, if you go, try to go on a weekday or first thing in the morning. Nearby, you can have an amazing dinner overlooking Calabogie Lake at On the Rocks. And the Somewhere Inn is a former motel that has been transformed into a great little hipster boutique hotel."

family road trip from ottawa

3. Deep River - Canadian Clock Museum

"I am fascinated by labours of love—those big projects that individuals take on, often without much time or resources, simply because they love something and want to share it with others. That’s why I really enjoyed the Canadian Clock Museum in Deep River. It is the “retirement” project of founder and curator Allan Symons, who started it two decades ago and is still buying new items. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the hundreds of clocks in the collection. He’ll also wind up old gramophones for you, or hold up a geiger counter to an old clock painted with radium paint to show you how the needle twitches."

family road trip from ottawa

4. Foresters Falls - Whitewater rafting

"Again, this is something people can’t do immediately, but now is the time to start thinking about it and make a booking. Everything related to local travel was snapped up quickly last year, and I predict that this summer will be even busier. The whitewater rapids about an hour west of Ottawa are some of the best in Canada, and there are multiple companies around Foresters Falls and Beachburg (on the Ontario side) and in the Pontiac (on the Quebec side) that will take you out whitewater rafting. At most of them, you can stay overnight, too."

family road trip from ottawa

5. Ithaca, N.Y.

"Now that it’s easier to travel to the United States again, I have a recommendation. Ithaca, New York is a bit of a hike from Ottawa—a little over four hours—so why do I recommend it? The city’s slogan is “Ithaca Is Gorges,” and they’re not wrong. Within the city limits, you’ll find dozens of waterfalls, including this one (in photo) in Buttermilk Falls State Park. You can hike along paths along both sides of the falls, and have a very scenic picnic at the bottom. Ithaca is also home to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, one of the world’s leading bird research centres. You can visit it to learn about birds and go birdwatching."

family road trip from ottawa

6. Kingston

"What can I say about Kingston? It has just about everything you could want in a great weekend getaway destination. It’s only two hours from Ottawa. It has hotels for every taste, from big chains to quaint B&Bs. It has great restaurants—try Tango Nuevo for some of the best tapas you’ll ever eat. It’s packed with history, from the Martello towers and Fort Henry to the Maritime Museum of the Great Lakes. You can hike the K&P Trail, take a ferry to Wolfe Island, enjoy some craft beers at the Kingston Brewing Company, and shop until you practically drop. (Don’t miss Cooke’s Fine Foods and Coffee, which has been selling food to Kingstonians since 1865."

family road trip from ottawa

7. Laval, Que.

"This huge suburb immediately north of Montreal is the perfect bad-weather destination, because there is so much to do inside! You can try your luck “landing” a plane at one of 24,000 airports around the world in the flight simulator at Aerosim Experience, go “skydiving” in an indoor skydiving chamber at iFly, check out one of the many escape rooms, climb the walls at Clip ’n Climb, learn about space at the Cosmodome or catch an indoor wave at Maeva Surf."

family road trip from ottawa

8. Peterborough

"The Canadian Canoe Museum is a fascinating spot for anyone who loves to paddle. You’ll find Indigenous birchbark canoes, high-tech kayaks, a canoe that a Canadian adventurer paddled to South America, Bill Mason’s canoe, and even Pierre Trudeau’s canoe (complete with the fringed jacket he famously wore while paddling it). You’ll learn all about the history and construction of canoes. There are some 600 watercraft in the collection, along with 500 paddles and all sorts of other items. In 2023, the museum is going to move into a gorgeous-looking new building on the shore of the Otonobee River."

family road trip from ottawa

9. Pontiac, Que.

Did you know there’s a winery in the Pontiac? In fact, there are several. This photo is of the Little Red Wagon Winery near Shawville, which also serves meals and hosts lots of live music events.

family road trip from ottawa

10. Rideau Lakes

"The Delta Old Stone Mill (pictured) in Delta is a national historic site. The Rideau Lakes area is best known as a summer cottaging destination, but there’s a lot to do in and around Rideau Lakes even at this time of year. Drop into the Jubilee Bakeshop in Delta for amazing sandwiches, shop for gifts at the Green Gecko in Lyndhurst and stay overnight at the Cove Inn in Westport. The Delta Maple Syrup Festival is coming back this year, on Easter weekend (April 16 and 17)."

25 great Eastern Ontario road trips from Ottawa

Looking for a scenic drive, a pretty town or a great hiking trail near Ottawa? Maybe you have a free afternoon or a weekend to fill—but you’re not sure where to start? Here are 25 great ideas.

Six fun day hikes in and around Ottawa

Itching to stretch your legs? Here are six destinations to consider, all within a 90-minute drive of Ottawa. Many sites have installed directional signs on their trails, so make sure to obey those. Also, if you do encounter people walking toward you, move over to give them two metres of room to pass. (If all else fails, turn your back as they go by. I know, it feels rude, but it’s the right thing to do!)

Mer Bleue, Ottawa

wooden boardwalk leading through deciduous trees and sub-arctic bog plants at mer bleue bog in ottawa, ontario.

The 1.2-kilometre boardwalk through a peat bog with a subarctic microclimate is the star attraction here; look for plants usually found much further north. Once you’ve checked out the boardwalk, leave time to explore more than 20 kilometres of easy, largely flat trails through forests along the ridge surrounding the bog. See the National Capital Commission website for more info.

Larose Forest, Limoges

Just north of Limoges, this large managed forest features 180 kilometres of trails, open to (depending on the trail) hikers, mountain bikers, ATVs, motorcycles and horseback riders. Check the Prescott-Russell website for maps and trail details.

Ferguson Forest Centre, Kemptville

chickadee trail sign with bird on sign and trees in background.

Right on the edge of downtown Kemptville, this leafy 445-hectare preserve seems miles from anywhere once you’re inside it. You’ll find walking trails, cycling trails and a dog park. The Friends of the Ferguson Forest website has details.

Gillies Grove, Arnprior

family road trip from ottawa

For some reason, I love the name of this nature reserve right in downtown Arnprior; it sounds like something out of a Victorian novel. The Town of Arnprior website has a map of this gentle 2.7-kilometre hiking route.

Shaw Woods, Eganville

brown carved sign markers pointing the way along a densely forested trail in shaw woods, near eganville, ontario.

Actually, the Shaw Woods Outdoor Education Centre isn’t right in Eganville; it’s located partway between Eganville and Pembroke. The 210-hectare woods includes a 50-hectare swath of old-growth forest (as well as 160 hectares of mixed forests and wetlands), and you can explore a 14-kilometre trail network. Note that the washrooms are currently closed; check out the centre’s website for the latest information.

Foley Mountain Conservation Area, Westport, Ontario

Situated on a granite ridge overlooking the pretty village of Westport and the Rideau Lakes, this conservation area has 10 kilometres of hiking trails, many offering gorgeous views. After your hike, you could swing by the Westport Brewing Company for takeout pizza and beer.

Eight lovely towns and villages near Ottawa

OK, the subhead is a bit misleading—a few of these communities are actually within the city limits! And all of them are easy road trips from Ottawa.

Manotick, Ontario: Watson’s Mill and the Rideau River

family road trip from ottawa

Here’s one pretty village that’s actually part of the city of Ottawa. If you live in Riverside South or Barrhaven, you’re practically in Manotick already! Watson’s Mill—one of the oldest operating grist mills in Canada—is worth checking out when it reopens for the season. You can get takeout from many Manotick restaurants , and settle down for a picnic—bring a blanket, or check this list of nearby parks to find a picnic table. For more ideas, see my ultimate day trip guide to Manotick .

Carp, Ontario: Shopping and donuts

family road trip from ottawa

If you live in Kanata or Stittsville, Carp—also part of the city of Ottawa—is right in your backyard. This November 2019 post features lots of local restaurants and galleries (as well as some Christmassy tips that are obviously not relevant at the minute). Check directly with the businesses mentioned for current hours and restrictions.

Vankleek Hill, Ontario: Beer and gingerbread

family road trip from ottawa

The gingerbread is architectural (check out the trim on the house in the photo), but the beer at Beau’s Brewing Company is indeed what you think of as beer—and you can pick it up curbside at the Vankleek Hill brewery. This charming town in Prescott-Russell is a great place for a stroll. Outside of town, you can check out strikingly painted Popsilos . For the latest information on what is open and closed, the local newspaper ( The Review ) is a good source. And here’s my post about day tripping to Vankleek Hill .

Merrickville, Ontario: More shopping, plus the Rideau Canal

family road trip from ottawa

You know, sometimes I feel as though I’m always recommending Merrickville. Then again, it’s always worth recommending! The limestone buildings with their blooming flower boxes are photogenic, and it’s really soothing to watch the world go by on the Rideau Canal. The local chamber of commerce has information on Merrickville businesses. For extra inspiration, see my post, 10 things you didn’t know about Merrickville .

Almonte, Ontario: History and river views

sculpture of james naismith with small shops in background in downtown almonte, ontario

This small Lanark County town began as a mill village, and repurposed mills still dot the downtown; you can spot several of them as you stroll along the Riverwalk, beside the Mississippi River. If ancient geology is more your thing, head to the Metcalfe Geoheritage Park to learn about the period—some 450 million years ago—when this region lay beneath a shallow sea. Just outside town, the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area offers hiking trails (although the museum and washrooms are closed). Takeout food options in Almonte include the Heirloom Cafe & Bistro and Baker Bob’s; the town’s website provides links to many local shops and restaurants, so you can check their current opening hours. And if you don’t know how the town got its name, check out 10 things you didn’t know about Almonte .

Carleton Place, Ontario: The Red Baron and a labyrinth

family road trip from ottawa

Not far from Almonte and also in Lanark County, Carleton Place is another pretty Mississippi River town. Contemplative types should head to the meditative labyrinth behind the Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum. History buffs can check out the mural of Roy Brown, the local lad who many believe shot down the Red Baron during the First World War. Restaurants offering takeout include The Good Food Company and the Smith & Barrel Pub at the Grand Hotel. See the local chamber of commerce website for links to local businesses. And, yes, I do have a post on 10 things you didn’t know about Carleton Place .

Perth, Ontario: A restful park and an historic duel

picnic table near willow trees and a flowering tree, beside the tay river in stewart park.

Completing my Lanark County trifecta in this post, I’ll recommend a visit to the town of Perth. It’s on the Tay River, rather than the Mississippi, and one of the best places to enjoy the river is from serene Stewart Park. Sitting there, it’s hard to believe this quiet town was the site of Canada’s last fatal duel. You can learn more about that in my 2019 post about day tripping to Perth . And if you’re nostalgic for movies on a big screen, the drive-in theatre in Port Elmsley is just a 10-minute drive from Perth.

Brockville, Ontario: Grand mansions and a riverside trail

family road trip from ottawa

Bring your bike: This city on the St. Lawrence River is one of the stops on the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail , a 3,000-kilometre recreational route that traverses a good chunk of Southern Ontario. If you prefer to see the sights from your car rather than a bike, drive to the eastern end of King Street on the edge of the city, where you’ll can admire all sorts of Victorian mansions from the road. One of them, Fulford Place, was built by a man who made his fortune in patent medicines; you can find out more in 10 things you didn’t know about Brockville . (Are you sensing a theme here?) The Downtown Brockville BIA has the latest info on businesses there.

Two road trips from Ottawa for boaters and paddlers

In The Wind in the Willows, author Kenneth Grahame wrote, “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” If you agree, here are two Eastern Ontario boating and paddling destinations you can check out right now.

The Rideau Canal

family road trip from ottawa

You can’t talk about boating in Eastern Ontario without highlighting the Rideau Canal. The 202-kilometres UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches from Kingston to Ottawa through all sorts of pretty places (including the aforementioned Merrickville and Manotick). You can put a canoe or kayak in the water in countless places; Parks Canada has lots of information for paddlers , including maps.

If you want to rent anything from a paddleboard to a yacht, the Rideau-Info website has a comprehensive list of rental companies along the entire length of the canal.

Check the latest rules and restrictions from Parks Canada before heading out. Note that reservations for campgrounds and oTENTiks (semi-permanent floored tents) at lockstations will open at 8am on April 21, 2021.

Thousand Islands National Park

family road trip from ottawa

The park, among Canada’s smallest national parks, stretches along the river shore and across numerous islands, between Jones Creek and Gananoque. It’s a wonderful spot for canoeing and kayaking, as well as hiking along networks of trails; the 7-kilometre trail network at Landon Bay is particularly popular with birders. If you don’t have a kayak, you can rent one from 1000 Islands Kayaking in Gananoque. If you’re interested in camping, reservations for 2021 open on April 20. As I update this on March 28, 2021, the park is still closed for the season; check the Parks Canada website for the current information on what is open and closed in the park .

To learn more about the region, check out my post, 10 things you didn’t know about the 1000 Islands .

Backcountry camping near Ottawa

family road trip from ottawa

When it comes to social distancing, you can’t get much more distant than a tent, right? That must be what the Ontario government has been thinking, as it has been slowly but steadily easing the restrictions on various types of camping. If you can’t wait to wake up to the smell of bacon sizzling in a cast-iron pan over a campfire, consider these Eastern Ontario camping spots. (P.S.: Don’t forget to bring along an early riser who likes to cook!)

Backcountry camping in Ontario provincial parks

In summer 2020, the Ontario government allowed backcountry camping in many provincial parks. Those within easy reach of Ottawa include Frontenac Provincial Park, Bon Echo Provincial Park and Algonquin Provincial Park. Reservations are strongly recommended. The Ontario Parks website provides more details on backcountry camping at its parks during COVID-19 . You can reserve now and media reports say all camping spots are filling up very quickly this year.

Backcountry campsites in Foresters Falls

Whitewater rafting company RiverRun also offers campsites along the Ottawa River that are great for paddlers. Maximum five people per campsite. Reservations required.

Two scenic drives in Eastern Ontario

In the mood for a scenic road trip from Ottawa? You’re in luck, as Eastern Ontario is full of beautiful landscapes and fascinating history to discover. Here are two suggested sightseeing drives near Ottawa.

Follow a Group of Seven painter through the Ottawa Valley

family road trip from ottawa

Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson travelled extensively in Eastern Ontario to paint wilderness scenes in and around Algonquin Park, Killaloe, Calabogie and other spots. The Ottawa Valley Tourist Association and a group of local art enthusiasts researched his travels a few years ago and created a website with a map, historical details, and photos of Jackson’s paintings juxtaposed with photos of the same sites today.

Drive the 1000 Islands Parkway near Gananoque

family road trip from ottawa

This route was built in the 1930s as part of the main road between Toronto and Montreal. When a section of Highway 401 to the north was completed in 1968, the 1000 Islands Parkway became a popular scenic drive. It takes you past some of the same destinations I mentioned in the section about Thousand Islands National Park, but this time you’ll see them from the air rather than the water. Here’s a great post by Mike Hector about things you can see (and eat!) along the parkway, which runs along the St. Lawrence River between Gananoque and Butternut Bay (west of Brockville). Check with businesses mentioned for the latest information on their current hours.

Three Eastern Ontario cycling routes near Ottawa

blue bike resting against a metal bridge over a river near almonte, ontario.

June often offers ideal weather for a day-long bike ride. Here are a few suggested bike routes through the countryside.

  • Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail: This 72-kilometre trail , which runs past farmers’ fields and through small communities, is a rail-to-trail conversion. It stretches from Hammond to St. Eugene, east of Ottawa.
  • Eganville to Douglas: This 32-kilometre semi-loop connects two communities in the Bonnechere Valley, with lots of river views and picnic spots along the way. Note that one of the usual stops on this route, Bonnechere Caves, is currently closed.
  • Lanark County: The county promotes itself as a prime cycling destination and has created an extensive list of over two dozen cycling routes through Almonte, Carleton Place, Perth, Balderson, Lanark Village, Maberly, McDonald’s Corners and more—with maps.

Gananoque (166 km)

Gananoque is the most adorable town that everyone seems to forget about.  However, in the summer, it's the place to vacation. As someone who used to spend every summer there growing up, I can attest to that. Whether you're just touring the town, or getting a boat cruise on the 1000 Islands boat cruise, you'll fall in love quickly.

Sharbot Lake (123 km)

Sharbot Lake is a great place to go hiking if you're tired of Gatineau Park .  Maybe you're looking for a close by spot to go camping, and this would be it. The views are absolutely amazing and you'll get so much out of this quick road trip.

2 Hour Road Trips

Kingston (196 km)

Kingston is the perfect spot in between Ottawa and Toronto,  and it's so underrated. There is so much to do in Kingston, no matter how long you're there for, you won't be bored. You may be looking to chill on a patio with a drink in your hand, or find hidden gems  if you don't want to do the normal touristy stuff. Or if you do want to do the touristy stuff, you're in luck!

Mont-Tremblant (153 km)

The most beautiful place in the winter and summer.  It looks like it could be a small town in Italy, tbh. You can lay out by the pool at your hotel, take the gondola to the main part of town, or go up to see the views of the town. It's the perfect weekend getaway , no matter what time of year!

Montreal (199 km)

Montreal is a classic road trip for Ottawans.  It's not far, and it's  so  much fun no matter what you end up doing. You may end up spending the whole time shopping, or drinking, but either way, either ways fine. Montreal is such a beautiful place in Canada, and you can even road trip there and back in a day!

Click next for 3 hour road trips!

3 Hour Road Trips

Syracuse (317 km)

The place we all went back to school shopping in high school.  I even went once in college, judge me. Anyways, Syracuse is the prime spot to go to if you want to spend a ton of money in one day. We all know the damage you can do at Destiny USA mall (RIP Carousel mall). And now that we can kind of afford it, why not do it again?! You can even explore more of Syracuse by going downtown, and actually knowing what the city looks like outside the mall.

Algonquin Park (276 km)

Algonquin Park is famous for its amazing camp ground,  but even more for the stargazing at night. There are also so many hiking trails to discover, you won't want to leave. Just make sure when you take a minute to look up at the sky at night with no lights on around you. It'll be magical.

Prince Edward County (257 km)

Everyone has been to Sandbanks Provincial Park at least once.  So that's one reason to road trip to Prince Edward County . If you're obsessed with wine and pizza, you'll adore Norman Hardie Winery. They serve the most amazing pizza and wine, and stop by Slickers County Ice Cream after for a sweet treat.

4 Hour Road Trips

Toronto (450 km)

Do I even have to explain this one?  I will, but I think you get the point. Toronto is a great place to be, even though it's not the capital , like most people think it is. You can spend a day here or two weeks and you wouldn't get tired of it. Toronto is a place where everything happens. You can spend a day at Canada's Wonderland, at Sugar Beach pretending you're in Miami, or shopping at one of the many shopping malls. And of course, dig into the growing foodie scene that Toronto has!

Vermont (376 km)

A beautiful state right outside of Canada,  and super close to Ottawa. This place is beautiful in all the seasons, and it gives off so many homey feelings. Vermont is the perfect place between city and small town vibes, so kind of like Ottawa. You must check out ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center, as well as Lake Champlain!

Quebéc City (444 km)

I think we all took a trip to Quebéc City in grade 12,  and we probably forget what we did (alcohol may have been involved). So you need to be refreshed. Tour Old Quebéc City for Europe vibes, grab a drink at one of their many breweries (they take their beer very seriously), and if you want to really experience the city, go on a delicious food tour!

Eagles Nest Lookout is a hiking trail that has gained a lot of popularity in the last few years because of the scenic lookout year round. Ithaca, New York is about a 4 hour Ottawa Road Trip one way so for those of us who really like road trips, this one is for you! It is in the United States, so you’ll need your passport. It’s absolutely doable in one day, and I even wrote a 24-hour itinerary blog post. With over 100 waterfalls within 10 miles of downtown Ithaca, being in the Finger Lakes region (New York’s largest wine producing region), and fantastic food, Ithaca is one place you don’t want to miss! You can definitely plan to spend a weekend here to explore more but it’s doable in a (long) day trip from Ottawa.

8 Best Road Trips from Ottawa

8 Best Road Trips from Ottawa

Let me detail you 8 Road trips from Ottawa that can get you back on the same day.

How many times have you felt the urge to simply hit the road during the middle of the day? Have you ever yielded to such impulsive drives?

Ottawa City offers some extraordinary roads that wind through sprawling wilderness, waterbodies, sleepy forests, and lovely houses.

Sometimes even driving to a restaurant located in Nepean gives so much pleasure.

The residents of Kanata and Stittsville are lucky to undertake short road trips and get back even within two hours! Both these neighborhoods are top-class residential localities in Ottawa .

8 Great Road Trips from Ottawa

I have enjoyed some of the quick road trips from Stittsville that my son took me.

Recently I happened to write an article that spoke about some short road trips from Ottawa.

Stittsville, Ottawa to Perth Road Trip

Stittsville

Yes, there is a ‘Perth’ in Ontario, Canada . It is 56 km south of Stittsville, Ottawa. It is a small town, peaceful and beautiful.

Some of the buildings have seen a century pass by. There is a river that was flowing through the downtown. It is River Tay. There were lawns on its sides; a few bridges act as observation platforms.

Gatineau, Ottawa to Almonte

Gatineau

Almonte was host to a textile factory. The town itself was part of another town called the Mississippi Mills.

Almonte town is about 60 km from Gatineau, Ottawa. From what I observed while making these short road trips in Ottawa, there are these small towns and villages that beg you to stop by.

The scenes ooze quaintness. I was jealous of those who have chosen (wisely) to settle down in such dreamy locations. I know they are commuting to their workplace in Ottawa and its surroundings. The road trip hardly consumes 50 minutes but they are worth it.

Whenever you have decided to implement the short road trips mentioned in this blog post, pack something to eat while parking your car outside the town’s small park. The passing cars’ passengers will envy you.

The historic appearance of Almonte pulled movie makers in large numbers.

Road Trip from Ottawa to Kingston

This is a rather long road trip but still, we got back in the evening. Kingston is the site of Lake Ontario. The distance between the two points is approximately 200 km.

Once a very small university town, not is teeming with life. Big shopping arcades, absolutely majestic churches, and scenic avenues would make contemplate another trip even before you made your exit .

Apart from Queen’s University and a few more institutions, the biggest attraction of Kingston is the 1000 islands that are located in Lake Ontario.

Actually, there are 1864 islands that you can visit by boat in the St. Lawrence River.

The majority of the islands are on the Canadian side and the remaining islands are part of New York State.

After reaching Kingston, all the cars invariably move towards Lake Ontario.

You will spend about 45 minutes on the scene of this large water body. Just sitting on the shore and gazing at the horizon is most pleasing.

There are plenty of option to dine out in Kingston. As a matter of fact, there were more restaurants than in downtown Ottawa.

Ottawa to Mont-Tremblant Road Trip

Mont-Tremblant

Mont-Tremblant, the 100% tourist landmark is situated 140 north of Ottawa. It is a small village on Laurentian Mountain.

The short road trip from Ottawa will get you to Mont-Tremblant in about two hours.

You pre-book some of the entertainments there that include a cable car ride, a mini golf game, skiing if you go there when snowing, zipline adventure, and go-karting fun.

In addition, Mont-Tremblant has impressive car racing track and it hosted several racing competitions in the past.

In a sing long street, there are numerous outdoor eating places, bars, and shops.

One can either stay overnight in Mont-Tremblant to enjoy all the rides or return in about 6 hours.

Stittsville, Ottawa to Kemptville

It is at the same distance of Ottawa to Perth but slightly eastwards from Perth. This is one more quick road trip from Ottawa that will take about 45 minutes only.

Road Trips from OttawaKemptville

The name of the main street of this village in Greenville is Prescott Street.

Residents of Kanata and Stittsville, and even Gatineau take the short road trip to Kemptville with their dogs in leash.

Freedom Park for dogs

Once they reach Kemptville, the follow the Google map to go to Ferguson Forest dog park where they unleash their pats and allow them o enjoy a rare freedom that they fully deserve.

The dog park is fully fenced and hence no worry for your dogs from getting lost.

For the dog parents too, it will be an enervating exercise following their pets in the forest.

Stittsville, Ottawa to Greenbelt, Ottawa

The road trip from Stittsville Ottawa to Greenbelt is an unexpectedly spectacular trip. You are in for a surprise once you reach Greenbelt that is 50 km away from Stittsville.

What can you expect when you have reached the destination of this road trip from Ottawa?

Hold your breath, buddy. Here we go.

  • A breathtaking Pine Grove, a trail of about 12 km
  • A swamp area called Shirleys Bay that is noted for reptiles and birds. The swamp is created by a small stream originating from Ottawa River.
  • Wildlife watching in Green’s Creek Conservation Area. You can spot rabbits, bear, coyote, porcupine, raccoon, and red fox! In addition, the avifauna includes several species of owl and Canadian goose, great blue heron, kestrels, and blue jay. Snakes and turtles are spotted if you are lucky
  • Soccer Domes
  • A golf course!
  • Walking tracts
  • A few farms that allow visitors

Ottawa to Chelsea, Quebec

The travel time to this small town in Quebec is just 25 minutes! The distance between two points is 21 km. Gatineau is a just a stone’s throw away from Chelsea.

I am sure residents of Ottawa, especially those living  in Kanata and Stittsville would take off the following weekend  after reading this post.

People are drawn towards the Nordik Spa and Nature, a sort of Wellness Center.

I think there is a sauna, massage parlor, and a swimming pool.

Set amidst lush green environs, I am sure your trip to Chelsea near Gatineau, Ottawa will be worth it.

Around the small French-speaking town has lakes and hills to stretch your legs and arms.

The Meredith Sports Center offers facilities to play hockey and soccer.

In addition, the picturesque Gatineau Park is also on your way to Chelsea.

If you are a frequent visitor to the downtown Ottawa, drive a bit further towards the Quebec border and you will see the signboard of visitor center.

There are exclusive trails for bikers and walkers.

The Canadians are passionate about biking. I have seen them going to distant places of interest on their bikes.

During the snow season, the Gatineau Park becomes a cross-country skiing trail.

For adventure-minded Canadians , there is a zipline facility in the park.

For eating, you will find outlets selling ice creams and pizzas, and sandwiches.

The Gatineau Park near Chelsea is home to several birds and animals including black bears and brown beavers. Spotting the beaver is easy because they live in large numbers in the Gatineau Park.

I think the road trip from Ottawa to Chelsea in Quebec province is the one of the best.

Ottawa to Wakefield, Quebec

The distance for this road trip from Ottawa is 35 km only towards northwest of Ottawa. Look at the map below.

We all know what a maze is but have we heard of a water maze? It exists in Wakefield near Ottawa. One of the most entertaining road trips from Ottawa should go to the short drive to Wakefield.

You can rent canoe and row through the criss-crossing water maze. The silence may ne unnerving but to keep you company will be the birds’ call.

I was able to locate a video of the water maze.

This unique adventure is called “Eco Odyssee”.

Another attraction in Wakefield is the ‘ bridge with a lid ’ !

The bridge is built over the Gatineau River.

For outdoor activities enthusiasts, there are several fun-filled activities that include horseback rides. However, when it snows, you can enjoy all the snow-based adventures such as dog sledding and snowboarding.

The biggest surprise during your road trip to Wakefield is the chance to indulge in ‘bungee jumping’. The Great Canadian Bungee in Wakefield is a lesser-known activity for the majority of the residents in Ottawa.

I am sure if I drive around more before the snow, I could come up with several more fun road trips from Ottawa.

While there may be plenty to see and do right in Ottawa , Canada’s capital is also well situated for a wide range of day trips. Whether you want to get active outdoors, spend time on the water, stroll through a scenic small town, or simply discover what some of the areas surrounding the city have to offer, there are plenty of options. Read on for nine of the best day trips from Ottawa.

Merrickville, Ontario: Scenic Charm

Mark Hogan Photography Ottawa, Canada / Getty Images

This lovely town has officially been dubbed “Canada’s Most Beautiful Village” by Communities in Bloom (a nonprofit that encourages beautification of communities) and as soon as you arrive you’ll know why. Merrickville is home to more designated heritage buildings than any other Ontario community of similar size. The vibrant Victorian village, situated on The Rideau Canal, is just about an hour’s drive from Ottawa making for an easy day trip. Once you arrive, spend your time shopping for antiques, hiking nearby trails, paddling, or taking a boat ride on the Rideau Canal, and checking out artisan shops and galleries

Getting there : Merrickville can easily be reached from Ottawa by an hour-long drive.

Travel tip : Stop for a break at the charming Yellow Canoe Café , which features a lovely patio overlooking the historic locks on the Rideau Canal.

Perth, Ontario: Something for Everyone

John Fader / Getty Images

Perth, about an hour's drive from Ottawa, offers curious visitors more than 100 designated heritage buildings and more than 70 boutique shops, restaurants, specialty stores, and more. More active travelers may want to explore by bike or canoe or kayak. The Tay River flows through the downtown area so if you’re on the water, you’ll get scenic views as you paddle. You can rent a bike or take a tour with Heritage Bikes, rent a canoe or kayak from Perth Outfitters, or take a hike on the Rideau Trail, which runs right through town.

Getting there : You can drive the approximately 54 miles from Ottawa to Perth in about an hour.

Travel tip : Pick up cheese and charcuterie from The Perth Cheese Shop and something sweet from Perth Chocolate Works .

Gatineau Park, Quebec: Fresh Air & Exercise

Getty Images/Manuel ROMARIS

Gatineau Park is just across the river from Ottawa and is the second-most visited park in Canada. It’s accessible and occupies an area of more than 140 square miles. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snow biking, and winter hiking and trekking. During the summer, visitors can enjoy swimming at one of the park’s beaches, hiking, rock climbing, biking, and picnicking.

Getting there : One of the best parts about a day trip to Gatineau Park is the fact it’s only a 20-minute drive from Ottawa.

Travel tip : If you are able to stay longer (or plan on coming back), there are camping facilities available.

The 1000 Islands, Ontario: Fun on the Water

UpdogDesigns / Getty Images

Located two hours from Ottawa along the border between northern New York State and southeastern Ontario, the 1000 Islands (pronounced “Thousand Islands,” not “One Thousand Islands”) consist of more than 1,800 islands dotting the St. Lawrence River. Many of the islands are open to the public and home to parks, campgrounds, and cottage rentals. One of the best ways to experience the 1000 Islands is via a boat cruise (cruises leave from several harbors) or rent a kayak or canoe and explore the scenic waterway on your own.

Getting there : The driving distance between Ottawa and the 1000 Islands is just over 120 miles and takes about two hours.

Travel tip : Thousand Islands National Park is about 9 square miles in total, making it Canada’s third-smallest national park. Bring your own tent and camp, or rent a floored tent called an oTENTik .

Parc Omega, Quebec: Canadian Wildlife

Vincent JIANG / Getty Images

Great for families or just anyone who wants to get up close to some local wildlife, Parc Omega is a year-round nature park less than an hour's drive east of Ottawa. Here you’ll find a wide variety of Canadian wildlife roaming freely on a 7.5-mile self-drive safari. As you drive the route, keep your eyes peeled for deer, elk, bison, caribou, and other animals roaming in their natural habitats. Remember to grab up a bag of carrots at the entrance so you can feed some of the animals that come right up to your car.

Getting there : It’s around a 50-mile drive to the park, which should take you just under an hour.

Travel tip : Make your way to the wolf observatory, the only one of its kind in the world, to visit with a pack of grey wolves.

Kingston, Ontario: Laid-Back Lifestyle

Onfokus / Getty Images

The historical charm of Kingston is evident almost everywhere you turn. As you explore, you will come across interesting museums and historical sites all well worth checking out. In addition, Kingston’s Waterfront Pathway is a picturesque 5-mile walk from Lake Ontario Park to the downtown core. The park features picnic areas, a waterfront walkway, a splash pad, and a playground. For shopping, Princess Street is downtown Kingston’s main retail area, lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Getting there : If you want to drive, the trip will take you around two hours (give or take), or you can also get to Kingston on the trail with VIA Rail. The train ride takes just over two hours.

Travel tip : Pick up a K-Pass for discounts on various sights and attractions as well as free access to some of the city’s best activities. Passes are available for 24, 48, and 72 hours.

Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario: Outdoor Adventure

LeoPatrizi / Getty Images

If you get started bright and early, a day trip to beautiful Algonquin Park is ideal for anyone itching to spend some quality time outdoors. While the interior of the vast park is only accessible via paddling or hiking, the stretch along Highway 60 is ideal for day trippers. Here you will find 14 hiking trails, bike paths, the Algonquin Art Centre, Algonquin Logging Museum, plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing and birdwatching and the chance to do some canoeing or kayaking.

Getting there : The drive from Ottawa to Algonquin Park is just over 155 miles and traveling along Highway 60 should take just under three hours, depending on traffic

Travel tip : Algonquin Park isn’t just for spring and summer visits. If you’re a fan of winter activities, head to Algonquin for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking.

Wakefield, Quebec: Arts & Culture

Stockbyte / Getty Images

You’ll find charming Wakefield just 30 minutes from downtown Ottawa in Quebec’s Gatineau Hills. Known as a haven for artists, there are several galleries here to visit, as well as a thriving live music scene to enjoy most nights of the week. Or if you want to get your blood pumping a bit, rent a canoe and paddle the Gatineau River. Don’t miss a walk across Wakefield’s iconic covered bridge. In addition, Wakefield is home to a variety of cafés, pubs, galleries, and boutiques.

Getting there : You can reach Wakefield from Ottawa in a short, 30-minute drive.

Travel tip : Canada’s highest bungee jump is located at the Great Canadian Bungee, just south of Wakefield.

Montreal, Quebec: Urban Excitement

R.M. Nunes / Getty Images

If you’re looking for an eclectic, buzzing day trip destination with an incredible food scene, myriad museums and art galleries, leafy parks and Instagram-worthy architecture, Montreal might just be the place you’ve been searching for. Foodies will want to head straight for Marché Jean-Talon to browse everything from cheese and produce to freshly baked bread. Parc du Mont-Royal, located high above the city, is a great spot for views and trails for jogging and walking. And make time to explore the historic cobblestone streets of Old Montreal, filled with cute cafes, shops, pubs, and restaurants.

Getting there : It’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Ottawa to Montreal, but if you want to leave the car at home, you can hop on the train. VIA Rail offers regular service between the two cities with a travel time of two hours or less.

Travel tip: Open year round, rain or shine, La Grande Roue de Montréal is the highest observation wheel in Canada. Each 20-minute rotation affords sweeping, 360-degree views spanning 17 miles on a clear day.

Jones Falls Lockstation

Walk the trail to the Jones Falls locks and the Stone Arch Dam in a clockwise direction. Leave the car at the Parks Canada parking lot on Road 11. The loop is about 1.5 kilometres and a nice way to spend an hour or the morning. Walk west on Kenney’s Road, past the hotel. From the bridge the powerhouse is visible to the north. The trail passes 2 sets of Rideau Canal locks, Sweeney House, the penstocks and the Stone Arch Dam. Beyond the dam, the trail turns right through a woods back to the parking lot. The blacksmith shop is on the other side of the waterway. There are trails from both sets of locks.

Sign showing buildings at Jones Falls Lockstation

The four locks at Jones Falls are Rideau Canal Locks 39 to 42 . The first 3 locks are in a single flight and the fourth is a short distance away.

The 1843 Blacksmith Shop is the small building on the other side of the waterway visible from both sets of locks. With its thick stone walls and metal roof, it was defendable against an armed attack. The hearth, in the centre of the shop, is an unusual position for a blacksmith’s forge. A blacksmith operated at Jones Falls until 1933.

Sweeney House , just east of the upper lock, was both the lockmaster’s home and a fortification. Built in the late 1830s, it also has thick walls, a metal roof and gun slits on all sides. Security was always on the mind of the British Army as tensions with the Americans continued after the war of 1812.

Three, huge, wooden tubes, the Penstocks , carry water from Sand Lake, above the dam, to the powerhouse below. The powerhouse, constructed in 1947, provides power to the regional power grid.

The 20-metre high, Stone Arch Dam is about 100 metres across.  It was the highest dam in North America when it was completed in 1831. Setting the blocks vertically, rather than horizontally, increased the stability of the dam. Oxen carts carried the blocks from the quarry to Jones Falls over muddy cart roads. These early 19th-century roads made the 10-kilometre journey a difficult, strenuous trip.

Chaffey’s Lock

Samuel Chaffey set up an extensive milling operation starting in 1820 at the current location of Rideau Canal Lock 37 . Chaffey died in 1827. The British Army purchased the operation, demolished the mill and built the lock in its place. The low dam, in line with the lock gate to the west of the main channel, helps regulate the flow of water especially during the spring flood season. The 1872 mill, beside the dam, is a private residence.

At the Lockmaster’s House Museum , learn about the history of the lock and the village. The house was built around 1845 as fortified housing for the lockmaster and his family. The second storey was added in the late 19 th century. It was a residence until the 1960s.

On our road trip to Ottawa, Perth is the perfect spot to stop for the night. There are plenty of restaurants. Enjoy a walk around the pretty downtown and see many beautiful stone buildings which have stood the test of time.

Perth began as a military settlement of emigrants from Scotland, England and Ireland and discharged soldiers after the War of 1812. By 1816, the population was 1500 people and, in 1822, the town became the county seat. Learn more about the town’s founding and the development of the Tay Canal from historical markers and plaques around town.

Perth Museum also Matheson House

Matheson House, on Gore Street East (the main street) just southeast of Foster, is the home of the Perth Museum . The exhibits highlight the history of Perth. Roderick Matheson had the sandstone home built in 1840. The parlour, dining room, drawing room and kitchen are restored and furnished reflecting the Matheson’s 1840s lifestyle.

The old Fire Hall and Tower are on Herriott Street, northeast of Gore. They are part of the local library. The engine house was built in 1855. The second storey and tower were added in 1883. From behind the library, look across Colbourne Street to the Mammoth Cheese , commemorating the cheese Perth dairy farmers sent to the 1893 Chicago World Fair.

The beautiful 1863 Town Hall , at Market Square in the centre of downtown, is open daily for town business. The bell and clock tower were added in 1874.

Perth Town Hall

Stewart Park is a great place for a picnic or to just stretch your legs. The Stewart family donated the land for this park behind the town hall in the 1920s. The slow moving waters of the Tay and Little Tay Rivers meander through the park, creating mirrors for amazing photographs.

Reflection of bridge and trees in river

On the north side of the park, Code’s Mill is an events facility with a restaurant, pub and specialty shops. In the late 1800’s, T.A Code operated a very successful woollen mill from the building.  He built the nearby Edwardian mansion, Kinivie , in the early 1900s. Steam, carried through underground pipes from the mill, heated the home in winter.

Water access was the key to a town’s prosperity in the early 19 th century. Perth residents funded the construction of the first Tay Canal in 1834 to connect Perth to the new Rideau Canal. This canal fell into disrepair by the 1870’s due to the high cost of maintenance and was abandoned.

Local mining and manufacturing interests petitioned government for a proper shipping canal. Their successful lobbying led to federal funding in the 1880s to alter, deepen and widen the Tay Canal. It rejoined the Rideau system in 1890. There are trails and parks along the Tay Canal and throughout town. Canoe and kayak rentals are available.

The Tay River Trail follows the Tay River along a former portage route. Walk upstream toward Bobs Lake or downstream to where the river meets Lower Rideau Lake at the Lower Beveridges lockstation on the Rideau Canal.

The 27-acre Last Duel Park , along the Tay River, has a number of serviced campsites, a public boat dock and launch and a picnic area with a shelter. The campground is generally open from mid-May to mid-October weather permitting. The last fatal duel in Upper Canada, occurred here in 1833.

Smiths Falls

The first land grant in the area went to Lt. Thomas Smyth in 1786. Smyth capitalized on the close to 11-metre in the Rideau River and built a small mill. The vibrant town of Smiths Falls grew around his mill. The falls were a major obstacle to boat traffic on the river. The original mill was purchased, demolished and replaced by a flight of 3 locks and a dam. The dam created a basin and a separate lock was added upstream at the end of this basin.

New hydraulic lock beside old locks

The Rideau Canal Combined Lock 29a at Smiths Falls is one of the few automated locks on the Rideau Canal. Most of the canal’s locks continue to be operated manually. A new low level bridge was built across the canal in the early 1970s. The combined lock was built just north of the old flight of 3 lock to allow boat traffic to pass under the bridge.  The old locks remain in place beside the new one. It’s interesting to see the differences.

The original grist mill was demolished to build the canal locks. It was replaced in 1830 with the mill which is home of the Rideau Canal Visitor Centre . There are 3 floors of displays and artifacts about the canal.  Get a panoramic view of the canal and Smiths Falls from the top floor.

Boat mooring is to the southwest of the combined lock adjacent to Victoria Park and a small serviced campground. Enjoy the gardens, paths, wading pool, children’s playground and picnic areas. The mounted aircraft is a Harvard Trainer.  It is a memorial to RCAF members who died in WWII.

On the northwest side of town, the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario is housed in the former Canadian Northern Railway’s 1913 station. The museum displays railway memorabilia and the adjacent rail yard holds a collection of historic rolling stock. The museum opened in 1985, 6 years after the railway abandoned the track.

Across town, on the southeast side, the Smith Falls Heritage House Museum offers exhibitions, art shows, day camps, educational programs and more. Some rooms are decorated to reflect Joshua Bates’ 1860 home’s heyday.  His grist and saw mills were nearby, built in the 1850’s adjacent to the Old Slys locks.

Merrickville

Merrickville is yet another cute town near Ottawa. The area’s first mill was built around 1790. The town didn’t begin to prosper until the mill was purchased by William Merrick who set up both grist and lumber mills. The plan for the canal locks bypassed Merrick’s mills so, unlike other owners on the canal route, his mills continued to operate long after the locks were in operation.

With the improved transportation provided by the canal, by 1851 Merrickville had developed into the area’s industrial centre. When the railway arrived in nearby Smiths Falls, the fortunes of Merrickville began to slow but a woollen mill operated in town until 1954.

Rideau Canal Locks 21 – 23 are separated by small basins. The engineers used the natural landscape and minimized the amount of trenching needed, saving both time and money.

The local historical society operates the Blockhouse Museum . The building was the largest blockhouse built on the Rideau Canal. It provided a defendable mustering point for local militia and acted as a supply depot. The military used it in the late 1830s and again in 1846, when tensions with the Americans were high. There was never an attack on the canal. The blockhouse was also the lockmaster’s home.

The Merrickville Mill Ruins , on the small island beside the locks, are all that remain of the mill buildings.

The water power that ran the mills provides power to the regional power grid today. The current hydroelectric generator was installed in 1993.  The first generator is on display by the mill ruins. Starting in 1915, it provided the electricity for the mills, a foundry and the village.

Be sure to tour town, often called the Jewel of the Rideau, to see the many beautiful heritage buildings and fun shops.

Prince of Wales Falls and Hogs Back Lockstation

The Rideau Canal and the Rideau River each follow their own path from the falls to the Ottawa River. Multi-use paths follow both all the way. There are walking trails around the locks, falls and dam.

Still water canal with side paths

Beautiful Prince of Wales Falls looked very different two hundred years ago.  The area was dense forest and the falls were spectacular with 3 sets of rapids. One ridge looked like the back of a pig so the falls were named Hogs Back Falls. When the ridge could no longer be seen, the falls were renamed Prince of Wales Falls but the nearby lockstation kept the name.

Prince of Wales Falls Ottawa

The construction of the canal completely changed the structure of the falls and their width narrowed. The dam controlled the flow of water over the falls. Every decade between 1840 and 1940 saw changes made to the structure of the dam due to damage from ice, drifting wood and flooding. The last major reconstruction was in the 1970’s until the swing bridge and roadway were rehabilitated in 2019/20. Even with the many changes over the generations, the falls remain impressive.

The city of Ottawa is a sprawling municipality formed in 2001. Ottawa has lots of things to see and do. These are several sites along the canal and the river in the city that are worth a look.

The Rideau Canal Skateway is a 7.8-kilometre skating rink created and maintained each year by the National Capital Commission. Every winter the canal’s water level is lowered. When a solid 30 centimetres of ice forms, the world’s largest and second longest skating rink opens for everyone’s use and enjoyment. Warm up at rest areas along its length, where there are toasty fires, hot drinks and tasty snacks. Winter 2019/2020 was the skateway’s 50 th season. Hartwells Locks are at the southern end of the famous Rideau Canal Skateway.

Rideau Canal Locks 1 to 8 are the 8 locks at the Ottawa River, the highest and longest single flight on the Rideau Canal. The total height change is 24 metres. The locks are in the valley between the beautiful Chateau Laurier and the Canadian Parliament Buildings.

Learn about the history of Ottawa at the Bytown Museum beside the locks. The Museum’s permanent and temporary exhibits have Victorian timepieces, tools used to build the Rideau Canal, even antique children’s toys and much more. Activities for the whole family explain Ottawa’s Bytown beginning, its lumberjack past, choice as Canada’s capital and evolution into today’s vibrant city. The building is the oldest stone building in Ottawa. It began as a storage depot for supplies, gunpowder and materials for constructing the Rideau Canal and for the canal’s administration offices.

At Rideau Falls , the Rideau River drops 9 metres over beautiful, twin waterfalls to the Ottawa River. Green Island separates the two falls. The falls and the island are part of the almost 3 hectare Rideau Falls Park. The park is the home of several monuments including the Commonwealth Air Force Memorial and the National Artillery Monument. Many embassies as well as the residences of the governor general and the prime minister are nearby.

In the 1800’s, mills and industry used the water’s power, producing products including flour, timber, woollen cloth and liquor. The power generated today at the falls is provided to the regional power grid. The factories and mills were demolished when Rideau Falls Park was developed in the 1950s.

Rideau Canal, UNESCO World Heritage Site

The canal runs from Kingston to Ottawa, linking 16 lakes, the Rideau and Cataraqui Rivers and 19 kilometres of man-made waterway. There are 24 lockstations controlling 47 locks, all open for visiting. Most of the locks operate by hand-cranking, as they have since the canal opened in 1832.

The canal was awarded a UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2007 in recognition of being the only 19 th -century canal in North America operating along its entire original length with most of the original structures still in place.  Boats still cruise leisurely up and down the 200 kilometre-long canal.

In the 1820s tensions continued between Great Britain and the United States over control of North America. The canal, built between 1826 and 1832 as a secure military supply route, included many fortified buildings. Many of them still stand and are open to the public for tours.

Rideau Canal Locks and Bytown Museum

Rivers and lakes were the highways of the 19 th century and the canal prospered in that role. The waterway became very busy, carrying settlers to their new homes and transporting products to market from the business enterprises along its route. When the railway arrived in the area, in the mid to late 19 th century, the canal’s use by industry slowed significantly.

Parks Canada maintains and operates the Rideau Canal for everyone to enjoy, whether by water or by land.

Know before You Go

What is the best time to visit the rideau canal.

Take this scenic road trip any time. All locks are accessible by road. A summer visit will ensure that you see boats using the locks with the lockmaster and personnel turning the hand cranks to raise and lower water levels and open lock doors.

Can I cruise the Rideau Canal by boat?

Waterway with boats docked at sides

Is there camping at Rideau Locks? Can I stay at a lockstation?

Yes. Most, though not all, offer some form of accommodation. Some have tent campsites, restored historic accommodations, or a one-of-a-kind oTENTik, a cross between a tent and a cabin. For details see the Parks Canada Camping and Accommodations page. Reservations are not required. Space is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis at the discretion of the lockmaster.

Are there hiking trails along the Rideau Canal?

Yes.  A 387-km network of interconnected hiking trails, called the Rideau Trail, runs between Kingston and Ottawa generally following the canal and its tributary waters. See the Rideau Trail Association’s Trail Map page for more information.

The Best Things to Do in Canada

8 of the Best Ontario Road Trips

Ontario Road Trips to Algonquin Park

With over a million square kilometres of terrain to explore, there’s no shortage of things to do in Ontario . Canada’s second-largest province is home to everything from lakes and rivers, to cities and culture. One of the best ways to see all that Ontario has to offer is to take one of the many incredible Ontario road trips, whether that’s exploring major cities like Toronto and Ottawa, or getting out into the wilderness and exploring one of the millions of lakes around the province.

So without further ado, here are the 8 best Ontario road trips for you to take this summer.

Niagara Falls is the most popular attraction in Canada.

Table of Contents

Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake

British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill visited Niagara Falls in 1943 and is quoted as saying that the Niagara Parkway is the “prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world.” Now that tells you something!

Niagara Falls is certainly no secret. In fact, it’s one of the top attractions in all of Canada. However, considering its beauty, and the fact that it’s only 30-minutes from Toronto, we couldn’t leave it out as an incredible road trip. To make the most of this Ontario road trip, extend your trip to spend a day (or two or three) in the Niagara-on-the-Lake region as well, taking the Niagara Parkway, which follows the Niagara River through beautiful wineries, parks, historical sites, and more. There’s plenty of places to try delicious food, snacks, and of course, wine! Plus, each season presents new scenery, such as blossoming flowers in the spring, hot weather in the summer, and winter festivals during the colder months. You can even extend your trip down to Fort Erie, which is south of Niagara Falls.

The Niagara Parkway is a short scenic drive running parallel to the Niagara River from Fort Erie at the bottom to Niagara-on-the-Lake at the top. It’s only 55 kilometres (34 miles) in length and takes just over an hour without any stops. Of course, doing the trip without stops would defeat the purpose, as you’d miss all the villages and attractions along the way, such as Old Fort Erie, Queen Victoria Park, Niagara Falls, the Butterfly Conservatory, a variety of wineries, and much more.

This short road trip can easily be made into a full day or a full week depending on what you want to do. For example, you could spend a day learning about the history of the area at Fort Erie, spend a few days in Niagara Falls to enjoy the beautiful views and the variety of attractions, and then spend a couple of days peddle-biking around wineries or catching one of the many performances during the Shaw Festival. After all, biking is so much better after a few glasses of wine.

Popular things to do include:

  • Wandering through the Historic District
  • Taking a food tour in Niagara-on-the-Lake
  • Touring the many wineries
  • Watching a performance at the Shaw Festival
  • Taking a Hornblower Cruise at Niagara Falls
  • Flying over Niagara Falls in a helicopter

Staying in Niagara Falls but wanting to explore the wineries without the worry of driving? The Niagara-on-the-Lake Shuttle offered from May 5th until October 29th is only $7.00 one-way for an adult ($5.00 for a child) and runs every 60 minutes from 10:30 am until 5:30 pm, departing from the Floral Clock.

Algonquin Park is a great Ontario Road Trip destination.

Ottawa to Toronto via Algonquin Park

When it comes to visiting Canada’s capital city and Canada’s largest city, there’s no shortage of things to do in Toronto and Ottawa . However, far too many people take the major highway that connects both cities instead of opting for the much-more scenic route through Algonquin Park. Known as the Highway 60 Corridor , this road trip cuts through the south end of the park from the east gate to the west gate, taking you through lush forest, while providing many opportunities to explore hiking trails, beautiful lakes, lookout points, campgrounds, and even an art centre.

Think of it like a massive oasis right in-between two of Canada’s most famous cities. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of Ottawa, take a few days to get back to nature in Algonquin Park, and then get right back into the action in Toronto. If you still have time, continue down to Niagara Falls and the stunning wine region for even more relaxation and sightseeing.

Algonquin Provincial Park, established in 1893, is the oldest provincial park in Canada and a national historic site. It’s about 7,653 square kilometres (almost 3,000 square miles) and is a great place to spend a few days outdoors. It contains more than 2,400 lakes and more than 1,200 kilometres of streams and rivers. Due to its location, it can be busy but is still a great opportunity to go hiking, canoeing, camping, wildlife viewing, or to simply see where the northern coniferous forest and southern deciduous forest meet.

Hamilton, Ontario is known for more than 100 waterfalls.

Hamilton Waterfalls

Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls may have been a hit song but we don’t advise listening to the lyrics when in Hamilton. This is, after all, Ontario’s waterfall capital , and we highly recommend you do go chasing them. Hamilton is only an hour’s drive from Toronto, making it one of the best day trips from Toronto, but also an excellent road trip as well. Rather than a long-distance type of drive, this one is more focused on seeing as many of the 100 waterfalls as you can.

All around the region, there are hiking trails and parks that allow you to see the thundering beauty of many different waterfalls, including the very popular Devils Punchbowl Falls, which is a 37-metre ribbon waterfall. Many of the waterfalls are located around the Bruce Trail Conservancy, but what makes this area unique is that you can easily combine some easy hikes through nature with urban charm as well, such as shopping for antiques on Locke Street, sightseeing at Dundas Peak, or learning about the city’s history at Dundurn Castle or the Steam and Technology Museum. Hamilton is also known for its thriving arts scene and the Supercrawl Festival, which is a great time to taste local food and craft beer.

Thousand Islands National Park is a wonderful Ontario Road Trip from Toronto or Ottawa.

Thousand Islands National Park

Perhaps one of the most beautiful and unique places in Ontario is Thousand Islands, which is just a short road trip from Ottawa or Toronto. Someone miscounted because there’s actually more than 1,800 islands residing around the St. Lawrence River, but either way, this is a gorgeous place to go for a road trip and then a water trip as well. Not only is it a stunning place to take a boat tour or to go kayaking and canoeing, but it’s also a great place to check out extraordinary lighthouses, historic castles, and learn about the unique history, which includes pirates and smuggling.

This national park straddles the American border and offers a range of things to do on land and on the water. If you had one of those cars that can also float in the water, this would be the trip to take!

Prince Edward County

If you love wine but are looking for something different than Niagara-on-the-Lake, consider visiting charming Prince Edward County in-between Toronto and Ottawa. A favourite amongst wine and cheese lovers, this vacation destination is the home to many passionate winemakers, giving you the chance to drink the province’s best Pinot Noir before walking the white sand beach of Sandbanks Provincial Park. But there’s more than Pinot Noir as well. The region is home to more than three dozen wineries, as well as two local cheese producers. In fact, if you really want to indulge, make your way here in June when the Great Canadian Cheese Festival comes to town. This can easily be a day trip from Toronto or Ottawa, but it’s much better to book a stay at a cottage or a local bed-and-breakfast and just relax.

Ontario road trips almost always include beautiful lakes.

Oxford County Cheese Trail

Want even more cheese? Then this road trip is for you. In Oxford County, near London, Ontario, you can follow a specific route to explore all 98 cheese factories in the area. Okay, maybe not all of them. That’s a lot of cheese! However, along the Oxford County Cheese Trail , you’ll find eight different companies showcasing their products and teaching you about the agricultural industry of the county. The nice thing about doing your own road trip tour is that you can make it as short or as long as you wish. Go for a few hours or stay for a few days. It’s not like it’s just cheese either. You’ll also find artisans, entertainment, and nature as well.

The entire trail consists of 24 stops featuring cheese, dairy, and other offerings that make for a unique road trip that’s not too far from both Toronto and Niagara Falls. It’s even close to some U.S. cities such as Detroit and Buffalo.

Downtown Toronto to Newmarket

While this 83-kilometre stretch of road may not be your typical road trip, it’s kind of a cool thing to do in Ontario. After all, it’s proclaimed to be the longest road in the world and is in the Guinness Book of World Records. It’s mostly situated on Yonge Street, taking you from the bustling downtown core of Toronto all the way north to Newmarket. You can visit the suburbs of Richmond Hill and North York, enjoy a glass of wine at Holland Marsh Winery, stroll the Newmarket Riverwalk Commons, or learn some history at the Elman W. Campbell Museum. In fact, the road itself is quite historical as it was part of the infrastructure that established Upper Canada in the 1790s and provided access to the Great Lakes in case of invasion from the U.S. after independence. If you want to continue North, you can visit places such as Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay.

The Lake Superior Circle Tour is one of the best road trips in Ontario.

Lake Superior Circle Tour

Last but certainly not least, the Lake Superior Circle Tour is by-far the most adventurous Ontario road trip of them all. In fact, it’s on our bucket list of road trips in Canada. We’ve technically done half of the route but only did it to get from point A to point B, missing out on all the beautiful sights in-between. There are essentially two Lake Superior road trips you can do. The full Lake Superior Circle Tour takes you through the Canadian side on the northern half and the American side on the South. You will cross the border twice and should aim to spend a couple of weeks to fully enjoy it. The shorter version is the Lake Superior Half Circle Tour, which sticks only to the Canadian side, comprised of the area in-between Sault Ste Marie and Thunder Bay. This stretch of the road trip is over 700 kilometres in length and can take anywhere from a really rushed-day to a multiple-week adventure. Please keep in mind that if you only do the Canadian version of the road trip, it’s one-way, which means you’ll have to come back the same way or continue on to other provinces such as Manitoba.

Popular places to visit include Thunder Bay, Ruby Lake Provincial Park, the Terry Fox Memorial, Rossport, Terrace Bay, Pukaskwa National Park, White River, Wawa, Lake Superior Provincial Park, and Sault Ste. Marie.

Toronto's Yonge Street is known as the world's longest street.

Road Trips in Ontario

While Ontario may not have those classic road trips like the Icefields Parkway or the Viking Trail , it does have a ton of interesting, fun, and beautiful destination that can easily be turned into a fabulous road trip. Whether you’re looking for a day trip from one of the major cities or looking to truly get into some adventure along the shores of Lake Superior, there’s no shortage of cool Ontario road trips for people of all types. We hope this article inspires your next trip and if there’s a road trip we missed, please let us know in the comments!

Road Trip From Toronto To Ottawa

If you want a quick yet impossibly scenic adventure connecting two of Canada's most iconic cities, then the road trip from Toronto to Canada is one you won't want to miss out on - scenic parks, beautiful lakeside views, and gorgeous towns are all waiting to be explored!

The 450-km road trip from Toronto to Ottawa takes 4 hours 20 minutes of driving. Key stops include Cobourg Beach and Boldt Castle, Sibbald Point, Charleston Lake, and Algonquin Provincial parks, as well as Kingston, Oshawa, and Kawartha Lakes.

There's a lot to remember when it comes to this amazing drive, so keep reading until the end to get an idea of what the routes are all about.

How far is Ottawa from Toronto and how long will the road trip take?

Taking the quickest possible route, the road trip from Toronto to Ottawa covers 450 kilometers of ground and takes around 4 hours 20 minutes to drive. This means you can take off later in the day and still make it to Ottawa in time for a night out.

That said, the route takes you along the beautiful Lake Ontario, which is ripe with amazing waterside attractions at every step. With that in mind, consider taking at least a full weekend, if not a full week, to enjoy the drive as much as possible.

Another way of approaching this trip is by taking a more 'inland' route, just south of Algonquin State Park. This extends your driving time by about 1 hour 30 minutes and adds about 30 kilometers to the trip.

One thing to keep in mind is, if you're traveling at an unorthodox time (outside the holiday season), you can expect a fair bit of traffic pulling out of Toronto and into Ottawa. Keep a traffic monitoring app handy to avoid getting stuck in a traffic jam.

Best road trip route from Toronto to Ottawa

There is no 'best' route for the road trip from Toronto to Ottawa - the two routes have practically no overlap, so you're highly encouraged to take one on the way to Ottawa and the other on the way back.

How to drive from Toronto to Ottawa

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between Toronto and Ottawa. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

The Lake Ontario Route

Leave Toronto via Don Valley Parkway, and at Parkwoods, hop onto Route 401, following it east past Morningside Park and Rouge National Urban Park. Past Greenwood Conservation Area, be sure to visit Ajax Waterfront Park and Kiwanis Heydenshore Park.

South of Courtice, visit Darlington Provincial Park, detour to Clarington and visit Jungle Cat World Wildlife Park. Back on the main route, pass Port Hope and stop at Cobourg Beach, then past Colborne, move toward the lake to visit Brighton and Presqu'ile Provincial Park.

After visiting Trenton and Belleville, visit Springside Park in Napanee, then be sure to spend a day or two in Kingston. Once you're done, visit Charleston Lake Provincial Park, then get back on the main route and follow the St Lawrence River through Brockville and Prescott.

From Johnstown, take Route 416 north over the Rideau River, then take the time to explore Manotick. Not long after passing Jack Pine Trail, drive out to Andrew Haydon Park, then follow Route 417 the rest of the way to the heart of Ottawa.

The Inland Route

Leave Toronto via Route 404, and past Newmarket, get on Routes 32 and 48, following the latter to Lake Simcoe. Visit De La Salle Park and Sibbald Point Provincial Park, then follow Route 48 east to the Trans-Canada Highway.

Just south of Gamebridge, take Route 48 again and follow it past Balsam Lake Provincial Park. At Indian Point Provincial Park, hop onto Route 38 and along Shadow Lake to Route 45. Drive out to Gooderham via Route 503, then detour to Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park.

Back in Gooderham, drive between Silent Lake Provincial Park and Algonquin Provincial Park via Route 118, then follow Route 28 to Denbigh. You can detour to Weslemkoon Lake and Bon Echo Provincial Park, then visit Bonnechere Caves in Eganville via Route 41.

Just before reaching Dacre, get on Route 132 and follow Route 417 on the Ottawa River, visiting Fitzroy Provincial Park and Morris Island Conservation. Follow the route past Diefenbunker and stay on it the rest of the way to Ottawa.

Best places to stop between Toronto and Ottawa

Although the drive is relatively short, the road trip from Toronto to Ottawa is best enjoyed over the course of several days. These are some of the best hotel options you can find along the way:

Feel like royalty in in Kingston

Located just past the halfway point of the Lake Ontario Route, Kingston makes for the perfect spot to call home for a few days during this trip. The best hotel in town is definitely the stunning All Suites Whitney Manor , housed in a beautiful 200-year-old limestone mansion.

You will feel like you are spending the night in a castle; the property features original pine or marble flooring with cathedral ceilings. The suites at this self-catered lodging boast elegant decor and luxurious amenities. Each suite has a fantastic full kitchen and some have balconies.

You might not be looking to leave any time soon, given that you might want to spend your time at the property. If you want to venture out and explore, though, downtown Kingston is only a five-minute drive away.

You will also be located a short drive away from Gananoque and Old Fort Henry National Historic Site during your stay.

Get the royal treatment in Ottawa

Ottawa is the crowning jewel of the Ontario experience, so to make your stay unforgettable, you'll want to book the best hotel money can buy - try to land a room in Fairmont Chateau Laurier Gold Experience for some of the fanciest accommodation in all of Canada .

It can be hard to even leave the five-star room once your head hits the pillow, but if you do, you'll be rewarded with two spectacular on-site restaurants. If you want to burn some calories afterwards, be sure to hit the fabulous on-site gym.

Another way of getting active is to get a bicycle and go exploring - places like Peace Hall and Parliament hill are only a short bike ride away.

For a more relaxing day, you can always dive into the swimming pool or even meet some fellow tourists on the shared terrace. After a long day spent outdoors, though, nothing beats a relaxing massage, and you can get an amazing one on-site.

Needless to say, the price of the hotel is on the high side, but it has anything you could possibly need and much more for the ultimate Ottawa stay.

Best time to go on a road trip from Toronto to Ottawa

The best time to do the road trip from Toronto to Ottawa depends on what you're after - certain parts of the drive are more scenic at different times of the year.

If you want to make the most of Lake Ontario, you might want to avoid the drive in the winter. On top of that, the abundance of provincial parks look best in their spring and summer attire.

As far as Ottawa goes, summer is the peak season owing to the mid-20s temperatures - with the city being so close to the American border, lots of tourists who are unaccustomed to Canada's chilly winters like to anchor down here between June and August.

The problem with visiting in the summer is that the crowds can make it hard to find a hotel room in the heart of the city. If you decide to visit around this time, be sure to book your room well in advance.

For the quintessential Canadian experience, you can always visit in the winter - the low temperatures deter most foreign travelers from visiting this time of year, but this makes it easy to get a good bargain on accommodation and explore the city in peace and quiet.

If you want to strike the ideal balance between good temperatures and modest crowds, late spring and early fall are amazing times to do the trip as well. Still, keep in mind that winter temperatures can linger out of season too, so be sure to pack some warm clothes.

At about 650 miles, it's the longest route in California and the second longest in the US. Beginning in the charming seaside town of Dana Point, just outside Los Angeles, and winding up to San Francisco (or vice versa), this spectacular drive offers an endless array of jaw-dropping coastal vistas, sun-soaked beaches, and must-see stops.

As you travel north to Santa Barbara, stop at the Santa Barbara Zoo and take in unobstructed sunset vistas at Ellwood Mesa. Continue to San Luis Obispo, where you can choose from 65 hiking trails, explore the children's museum, or stroll through the infamous Bubblegum Alley. And don't miss out on other notable destinations like Big Sur, the charming seaside town of Carmel-by-the-Sea and its crescent-shaped beaches and storybook-like architecture, or Monterey, home to the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium .

Once you reach San Francisco, take an exciting ride on the city's famous cable cars. Then visit the California Academy of Sciences, an all-in-one planetarium, aquarium, and natural history museum in Golden Gate Park. And no matter how often you visit San Francisco , you must visit the Golden Gate Bridge, on foot or at vantage points like Battery Spencer or Fort Point.

Travel the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia to North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway, affectionately known as "America's Favorite Drive," meanders nearly 500 miles through Virginia and North Carolina. Connecting Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this scenic route boasts 272 magnificent overlooks and more than 100 hiking trails , including the famed Crabtree Falls.

Roanoke, the largest city along the Parkway, offers families a multitude of outdoorsy activities, like mountain biking at Explore Park and hiking to the famous Roanoke Star in Mill Mountain Park. A bit farther south, near Meadows of Dan, VA, my family had a wonderful time at Primland Resort. We stayed in one of its 22 spacious lodge suites; they also offer unique treehouses and villas, an observatory for stargazing, guided nature walks, thrilling ATV rides, and a fun-filled game room .

Near the end of the Parkway lies the mountain town of Asheville, which is close to several family-friendly hiking trails , including Graveyard Fields. There, my family enjoyed panoramic viewpoints, toured the iconic Biltmore Estate, and visited the River Arts District, Asheville Museum of Science, and North Carolina Arboretum.

The centrally located Grand Bohemian Asheville, located next to the Biltmore Estate, is ideal for exploring the city's bustling downtown area, which is known for its arts, crafts, and delicious local cuisine. The region also has several excellent glamping options, including the cabins at Asheville Glamping.

Take a road trip through Arizona

From majestic mountains to captivating canyons, Arizona's glorious scenery cannot be fully realized by visiting just one destination. You must explore it through the open road. Start your journey in the Phoenix area, which has an abundance of kid-friendly attractions, like Legoland Discovery Center, Butterfly Wonderland, and the i.d.e.a. Museum.

As you venture just two hours north, stop in Sedona to explore the vibrant art scene and mesmerizing red rock formations. Admire the area's stunning beauty on a thrilling Pink Jeep Tour , and retire to campgrounds like Chavez Crossing RV Park and Rancho Sedona RV Park. Another economical accommodation option is the two-bedroom suites at Los Abrigados Resort and Spa. Families looking to splurge should stay at the Enchantment Resort in Boynton Canyon for relaxation and endless family-friendly activities, including hiking, stargazing, and cultural activities at Camp Coyote.

Spend several days exploring the west, north, and south rims of the Grand Canyon, marveling at panoramic vistas at the Skywalk at Grand Canyon West, and kid-friendly hiking trails, like the 1.8-mile South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Aah Point. For a rush of adrenaline, set out on a whitewater rafting excursion with companies like Advantage Grand Canyon.

To make the most of your time, pitch a tent at one of six campgrounds within Grand Canyon National Park, reserve an RV spot at Trailer Village, or stay at one of the nearby hotels like El Tovar Hotel, Under Canvas Grand Canyon, and the historic Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams, where you can take a fabulous train ride to the canyon's South Rim.

Last but certainly not least is a trip to Page, where short hikes lead to the marvelous Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. Families can also take a boat cruise on Lake Powell and visit the Glen Canyon Dam.
