AT&T Cruise Package versus Disney's Wifi?

First time going on a Disney Cruise , and wondering if anyone can give any advice. Before the 'turn your phone off crowd' comes in, the reason for needed the internet onboard is to run payroll for clients. Little difficult to tell clients that they won't be able to pay their employees for a week! Anyways, I've read some horror stories here about the internet on the ship being awful. Wondering if anyone knows firsthand if the AT&T internet packages are any better. We're going to be on the Disney Magic. Our wireless plan already includes unlimited everything in Mexico, so we're good when the ship is near shore. However for our 3 days at sea, trying to figure out our best option for reliable internet access. Ideally will only need it for like an hour, but will need to VPN into a work computer. Thanks!

Following - having my own debate internally about using the ATT cruise package or spending $ for the DCL wi-fi... We cruised to Mexico on DCL a few years back and the ATT coverage there was meh... Might be better now, but just throwing that out there for you. My understanding is the ATT cruise package only works when on-ship, at-sea, and >11 nautical miles form shore.

My understanding is they both use satellite and thus are both subject to weather or poor reception depending on location. I can't say whether one is better than another. There were some recent posts about poor wifi. Also keep in mind that whatever he needs to do -- may take longer than usual due to slower/poor connection. Does he need to run payroll every day? Or could he plan to use a coffee shop in port one day? Often Starbucks or such will give free wifi to cruisers who stop in for a cuppa.

So a couple things to keep in mind from a fellow AT&T customer. The cruise ship plans only include either 100MB or 1GB of data which gets eaten up QUICKLY and the overage charges are insane. It's like $10 per 100MB over. Both the cruise wifi and the ATT internet likely will be similar speeds and will depend on a lot of factors. When I've used it, the internet was pretty slow and hard to get anything done. So, depending on how complex the systems he is running I'd be trying to find a plan B for payroll. Like can he run it a day early so he's in port or have someone from home run it for him? I'd just make sure you have a plan B ready to go in case you get on the ship and aren't able to do what you need to do with the internet.  

I think ATT partners with https://www.wmsatsea.com/ for, ag least, cellular services (and it may very well be that ATT (WMS) provides cellular access to the Internet aboard ship, not via wi-fi. I think Disney may use SES out of Maryland as a satellite provider for Disney-sold wi-fi. I don’t know if/who WMS uses as a contracted satellite provider. Some cruise lines/ships have converted to StarLink. I haven’t seen one way or the other what Disney has/is planning to do.

Disney is charging by day now right, instead of by MB? That could make a difference. Have you tried to VPN into the machine away from home before? I ask, because my husband had issues trying to get the VPN gateways for his job to work in Europe. This wasn’t a wifi issue; it was happening on land too. Since it’s your machine, it might be easier. For anyone curious, the premium Star link wifi on Celebrity in Europe was otherwise pretty good. He actually did some video calls.

I can’t say what will work better but I’d just caution you about doing anything with confidential financial information over the Disney wifi. It’s not very secure. I know from experience after being hacked. I never check bank balance or do anything requiring a credit card through wifi, except when I‘m home On my own secure system. I’m sure you have all sorts of safeguards built in already but just a cautionary tale.

AT&T Cruise Package vs. Voom?

We will be on the Explorer pretty soon. I have hear the Voom Surf & Stream isn't that great on Explorer. We don't really plan on streaming but want the availability to use text, wifi calling and check emails. For our trip 1 device is $112 and 2 devices is $199.

In addition to the above Voom it would also be nice to use the AT&T International Day Pass while at our 4 port stops St. Maarten, Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire. We have used this before and only get charged if you actually use your phone for calls, text or data. It is $10 per day for first line and $5 for additional lines so would be $60 for both my husband and I to have phone access at port however, if we don't end up using it we won't get charged that day.

AT&T also has a cruise package that we could get instead of the above.  For $100 for the whole trip you would get unlimited talk, unlimited text plus 200 MB data OR $50 for just unlimited talk and text, no data.

Has anyone every used the AT&T cruise package on a ship?

Any insight would be great. Thanks!

We just got off the Oasis on 2-6-22. My DH called ATT to add the on ship package. After we got on the ship we found the you can’t use the ATT phone. You have to get a VOOM package and use Wi-Fi calling.

Voom for on board.  Only a handful of ships have 4G on them and some you might get stuck with a 2G connection.

We used to always get the ATT&T cruise pkg. Recently off Explorer only having the Voom Surf-n-Stream and easily put my iPhone on air plane mode and used wifi calling for texts. Worked out well. 

Just so you know, unless you both plan on using wifi at the same time you only need to buy for 1 device.  You sign off 1 device and then sign onto the 2nd device.  No problem.  You may not need to pay for 2 devices.

I don't think the AT&T plan is a good deal. If you are only going to talk and text it might work out for you. That means no using your web browser and no social media. Make sure to turn off data roaming or you will have an unexpected bill. Could be huge. With those plans you would not want o surf the web as the data would be used up in minutes.

You can definitely use Cellular at Sea on Oasis with an AT&T cruise package. Someone gave you wrong info.

It really depends on if you want data or not. 200mb won't go far. But if you only want talk and text, the cruise package is the way to go because it will also cover you in many ports while you're on land.

Thanks everyone! We have decided to do the Vroom 1 device package which is what we have used in the past. We have the International Day Pass on our phones with AT&T so if we need to make a phone call or use our phones for any reason while in port we can just do that. It's $10 per day only on days we use it.

We have previously written about using your cell phone on a cruise . While several of the major carriers offer some form of cruise packages, the AT&T cruise packages are generally the most extensive and reliable. You also have other easy communication options that take advantage of the ship’s wifi.

( Editor’s Note: This is not intended to be a promotional plug for AT&T. Rather, it is based on the sad first-hand observation that it is possible to sign up for a cruise package with one of the other major carriers (which shall remain nameless) and discover that it doesn’t actually work — while your travel companion who has AT&T seems to never encounter any access problems. This happened on three separate cruises! — E.W. )

If you need to rely on actual cell phone carriers (for work reasons, for instance), then this is what you need to know.

AT&T offers two cruise packages to stay in touch with your connections while on a cruise and when you’re in port. These packages are available on more than 175 cruise ships. Both charge a once-off fee, which gives you 30-day access to talk time and texting. The more expensive deal offers a specified amount of data too.

How To Use AT&T Cruise Packages

AT&T has two offerings in the category of cruise packages. The first is a $100 option; the AT&T Cruise Talk, Text, & Data package . It gives you unlimited talk time, texts, and 200MB of data. Overage fees are $2/MB.

The other package is the AT&T Cruise Talk &Text , which costs $50, providing you with 50 minutes of talk time with an overage cost of $2/minute. It also includes unlimited texts . 

You need domestic wireless service and a compatible device to use either of these packages. Your package is valid for 30 days from the chosen date, even if it overlaps two bill cycles. It will automatically expire at the end of the period. 

You will pay a once-off fee for each device you wish to use on the cruise. AT&T will charge you the full amount for a cruise package canceled on or after your effective date, but it won’t cost you anything if you cancel before the effective date.

What About Coverage?

The two AT&T cruise packages provide you with coverage while onboard specific ships traveling in international waters. You also get coverage in Canada, Mexico, and most Caribbean islands at no extra cost.

When your device is linked to the ship’s cellular network , you will find one of the following codes displayed on your screen:

When the ship comes within 12 nautical miles of land, it is required to switch off its cellular network. Your phone will then connect with the closest country’s networks.

What Is The AT&T International Day Pass?

If your travels take you to countries not listed for AT&T cruise packages, you can add an AT&T International Day Pass (IDP) to your device before traveling. Alternatively, AT&T can add it to your line if you have no international features attached to it.

 This will give you coverage for any in-country use. The IDP only applies when the ship is docked, if you’re on land in a foreign country, or if you’re being ferried to shore on a smaller boat. It costs $10 per day per line and provides you with data, texts, and talk time identical to your home package, and you can use it in 210 different countries. You are only charged for days that you use the IDP.  

AT&T caps your bill at $10 per day on a single line. Using another line on the same account within the same 24-hour period will cost $5.

When Would You Need Pay-Per-Use Rates?

AT&T offers coverage on 175 different cruise ships. However, if you’re on a cruise ship that doesn’t support AT&T, the pay-per-use rates apply. This rate also applies when you haven’t bought a package, or when it expires. Pay-per-use rates are typically more expensive than cruise plans. 

• Talk time costs $3 per minute. 
• Texts cost $0.50 per message and $1.30 for a picture or video message
• Data charges are $4.10 per MB

How To Manage Your AT&T Cruise Package

Here are some tips for managing your usage if you’ve purchased an AT&T cruise package. 

• Switch off your data roaming in the device’s Settings.
• Disable any applications operating in the background
• Disable your email auto-check.
• Avoid streaming because it uses too much data. Rather download content before leaving the country (or buy a streaming package offered by the cruise line).
• Use the AT&T IDP if you plan to use a lot of data while in port or Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean islands, and your domestic package doesn’t provide data in these countries.
• Remember that each cruise package you buy is for one device only. If you need multiple devices, each one will need its own cruise package.

Using Your Phone Internationally

If you’re not used to communicating internationally, follow these guidelines to get your business done:

• If you need to call or text someone in the US, select +1 and add the 10-digit phone number.
• To communicate with someone in another country, choose + (country’s code) and the local number.
• Switch on data roaming if you want to utilize cellular data. 

The Pros And Cons Of AT&T Cruise Packages

These cruise packages have their benefits and their downsides. 

Benefits Of AT&T Packages

These cruise packages offer discounted cellular service onboard more than 175 ships. They are compatible with the IDP, which is cheaper than international roaming rates. It saves the passenger from exorbitant pay-per-use charges. You also don’t have to purchase a wifi plan (but there are reasons you may want to do so anyway-particularly if you will be using large amounts of data). 

The Downside Of AT&T Cruise Packages

If you’ve bought the $50 package, it includes no data. You must be very careful about data usage because it costs $2/MB. If you don’t turn off your data roaming or put the device in airplane mode, you could end up with an almighty data bill. 

Although the $100 cruise package includes unlimited talk time and texts, it only gives you 200MB of data, which doesn’t last very long. The plan automatically permits you to access more data when needed or when applications use it to operate in the background. This could also set you up for a huge bill. 

It could be cheaper to purchase a ship internet wifi package (such as Royal Caribbean’s Voom) which gives you constant access to the internet and supports wifi-calling.

Closing Thoughts

If you need to stay in touch through text or foresee needing to make many phone calls while on your cruise, an AT&T cruise package may be just what you’re looking for. The flat rate fee will allow you to budget accordingly and not worry about paying per use. However, keep in mind that these plans do not include data and if you plan to be calling or texting others on the cruise, they will need their own coverage.

AT&T Cruise packages (brochure terms):

Eligibility: Compatible device with eligible domestic postpaid wireless service required. Charges: One-time charge of $60 per line for Cruise Basic package or $100 per line for Cruise Plus package. Package is valid for 30 days beginning on the chosen effective date, may cross 2 bill cycles, and expires automatically. Package charge will not be prorated if canceled on or after the effective date. If package is canceled prior to the effective date, the line will not be charged. Coverage: Package applies to cellular use onboard select cruise ships listed at att.com/cruise when sailing in international waters. When the device is connected to the ship's cellular network, "cellularatsea", "wmsatsea", "901-18" or "NOR-18" displays on the device. The ship turns off its cellular network when it is within 12 nautical miles from land and docked or tendered in port, at which point cellular service is provided via the nearest country. Travel tips for your AT&T Cruise package

Your device will display  Cellular at Sea, 901-18 , or  NOR-18  when roaming on the ship’s network. When roaming on a land-based carrier, it will display the land carrier's network information. Cruise ships are required to turn off their wireless networks when they are 9 - 12 nautical miles from land and while in port.

What is the difference between a cruise package and other international roaming packages.

Is my usage covered regardless of the cruise ship I take?

AT&T cruise packages only apply to select cruise ships. If you're traveling on a non-qualifying ship, any cellular usage will be billed at pay-per-use rates . For more info, see our cruise ship guide for available services.

Will data used while on shore be included in the cruise packages?

No, the Cruise package only includes usage incurred onboard select cruise ships listed at att.com/cruise . For usage on land/in-port, add an available international business mobile plan. Go to att.com/internationalforbiz for options.

Can I have a roaming package along with a cruise package?

Yes. Cruise packages are compatible with all other international roaming packages including International Day Pass for Business.

How can I tell if I am on a ship’s wireless network versus a wireless network in an international country?

Be aware that cruise ships are required to turn off their wireless networks when they are 9-12 nautical miles from land and while in port. Also:

How long is the AT&T Cruise package effective?

Cruise packages are effective for 30 days and expire automatically. Pro-rated charges are not provided for cruises less than 30 days. The package will automatically drop off after 30 days, so there is no need to contact Customer Care to remove it.

Will one AT&T Cruise package cover all the devices on my account?

No. AT&T Cruise packages are added on a per-line basis. If you are traveling with multiple wireless devices that you wish to use during your cruise, each device must have its own cruise package.

Are you planning for a cruise voyage? The first thing that you should consider is Internet connectivity. 

In Today’s modern world, everyone is connected through social media, and during sailing, you can’t be cut off from your friends and family. 

Who wouldn’t want to share their snaps while sailing, right? And who wouldn’t want to have a video call with their loved ones while cruising? I can’t imagine going on a cruise without staying connected online.

The solution is the AT&T cruise package, allowing you to stay connected with your loved ones during the voyage. You can make calls, send SMS, and share your stories on the Internet without hassle.  

In today’s guide, I will discuss two major cruise packages offered by AT&T and compare this service with the cruise ship’s Wi-Fi. By the end of this, you’ll have the lowdown to decide which option is right for you.

What Is AT&T Cruise Package?

One of the biggest hurdles on cruise ships is cellular connectivity; to overcome this, the AT&T cruise package saves your day. 

The American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) cruise packages offer reliable cellular connectivity onboard, so you can make calls, send SMS, and use the Internet while sailing. 

If you are a phone addict and live mostly on phone calls to run the business, AT&T is the best bet for you

AT&T covers over 175 cruise ships, so whether you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean , Carnival , Norwegian , or any other cruise line, AT&T has got you covered. 

On top of that, AT&T offers just two major packages, so you don’t need to immerse yourself in confusing cruise packages. Plus, cruisers can enjoy unlimited calls and SMS. The only restriction comes to data. 

On my last Royal Caribbean cruise, I snagged their Voom Internet package —it’s cool, but no international calls or texts. That’s why I opted for the AT&T cruise package that allows unlimited call minutes and SMS. Game-changer!

Types Of AT&T Cruise Package 

AT&T offers two main cruise packages for smooth cellular connectivity. Both packages are available at reasonable prices and last for 30 days– which is a huge plus. 

1- AT&T Cruise Basic 

The first is the AT&T Cruise Basic package, which costs you $60 for 30 days. This one is a lighter package and the best option for those who just are phone-detox sailors. 

With this basic package, you will get 100 minutes for calling and unlimited texts to stay connected with your family. 

Unfortunately, the AT&T Cruise Basic package has only 100 MB of Internet, which is scant. So, once you open any streaming app, the MBs will fly in the blink of an eye. And if you forget to turn off data roaming, your account might take a hit with some extra charges. Watch out for that!

This package is not for you if you’re a heavy internet user. Instead, you can opt for the cruise wifi package along with the AT&T cruise basic package. 

2- AT&T Cruise Plus Package

The second one is the AT&T Cruise Plus package. It costs you $100 for 30 days and is the best companion for sailors, offering unlimited test calls and SMS. 

So, if you’re a business person who talks and texts with your clients daily, this package fits you perfectly. With unlimited call minutes, you don’t need to worry about draining minutes. 

Regarding the Internet, it offers 1GB of data, which is insufficient for Internet buddies. But you rarely use the Internet; the 1GB of data is sufficient to update WhatsApp status, send streaks on Snapchat, or check emails. 

Again, streaming with 1GB of internet data is not the best deal, so you must stay away from streaming services to secure your MBs. Remember that for an extra 100MB of internet usage, you will be charged $10. 

How AT&T Cruise Package Works?

AT&T operates over a satellite, so you don’t need to worry about lagging during the sailing. 

AT&T works on “Cellular at sea”– a ship’s cellular network that uses a satellite or VSAT connection. Almost every cruise ship has “Cellular at sea,” so when you embark on the cruise, the phone automatically gets connected to the network. 

You should turn off your data roaming when you’re on a cruise because the cost of using the “Cellular at sea” is too high. But you need to fret if you have got the AT&T cruise package. 

Your AT&T cruise package will automatically start working after 9 – 11 nautical miles from the shore. And you can use your phone for making calls and send SMS right after that. There is no lagging in their service because now your cruise is the mobile hub; whether you’re on a top deck or in your stateroom, the AT&T network works seamlessly.  

Can I Use AT&T Cruise Package On a Port?

No, the AT&T cruise package won’t work outside of the cruise. So, if you’re on a port excursion, you have to consider other alternatives. 

The AT&T cruise package only applies while sailing; the standard international roaming charges are steep if you use it at ports. The best solution is to go with the AT&T International Day Pass, which costs you $10 and offers unlimited calls, text, and Internet. 

The good news is the AT&T International Day pass is applicable for 210+ destinations. So Whether you’re strolling in Cuba , Puerto Rico , or the Bahamas , you can stay connected with the world. 

Alternatively, you can use free Wi-Fi at cafes, hotels, and restaurants. But I suggest you go with the A&T day pass for 

Can I Use AT&T Outside Of The USA

AT&T services work seamlessly in more than 210 countries, and their data coverage is available in more than 190 countries. So, if you’re outside the USA and sailing somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean or Caribbean Sea, the AT&T network will work smoothly. 

Even though the data speeds and coverage might vary by destination, performance remains smooth throughout the voyage. 

So, it’s a good idea to go for the AT&T International Day pass because it will allow you to stay connected while enjoying the unforgettable sea views.

AT&T Pay Per Use Rates?

AT&T has a very steep pay-per-use rate. You will get overcharged if you don’t have any international or cruise package and you’re still using AT&T services. 

That’s why turning off data roaming is recommended if you didn’t subscribe to the AT&T cruise package. 

Also, you must know the AT&T pay-per-rates before subscribing to their international and cruise packages. You will have to pay extra charges for overusing their services. 

AT&T charges $1/minute for extra calling minutes in Canada and Mexico, $2 for European countries, and $3 for the rest of the world. For extra text, you have to pay $0.50/message; for the Internet, the charges are $2.05/MB, which is very high. 

Is AT&T Better Than Cruise Ship’s wifi?

Almost every cruise ship offers Internet packages to stay connected. Among all the cruises here, I would prefer to talk about Voom– the Royal Caribbean Internet Package. 

I’m a big fan of Royal Caribbean and frequently book their cruises for fun. The Internet package that RC offers is called “Voom,” and we usually go for this package. 

For $26/day, you will get the “Voom Surf & Stream” package to let you enjoy the Internet without any barriers. But most cruisers go for the Voom. That’s why its speed is slower at certain spots on board. 

During sunrise, the speed is quite high, and you can stream in 4k. But the speed gets slow after the evening, and you will sometimes face lagging issues. 

In contrast, AT&T has very fast Internet because few people opt for this option. But unluckily, AT&T doesn’t offer enough Internet to fulfill the needs. 

And if you’re an Internet guy, you should subscribe to Ship’s wifi package. 

Some Tips To Save Your Data Usage 

If you have subscribed to the AT&T cruise package, you must face the scarcity of Internet MBs. So, the first thing that you should do is saving. Here are some tips to save your data usage onboard. 

• Avoid Streaming: Streaming is like a killer of MBs, so totally avoid streaming if you’re on an AT&T cruise package. 
• Disable Unused apps: Try to disable the functionality of unused apps; these apps also use data to update their information. 
• Use Wi-Fi When Available: If you also have the cruise’s Wi-Fi package, use that. And don’t forget to turn off data roaming to save MBs. A few cruise lines offer free Wi-Fi in some spots to consider using. 
• Turn off the Data Roaming: When you’re not using cellular data, turn off the data roaming. 
• Beware of Data Usage: Keep an eye on the usage of your MBs. The iMessage will let you know about the status of your AT&T cruise Internet package, so keep an eye on that. 

Is AT&T Worth Its Option? 

AT&T is a good option for those who love to make phone calls every time or deal with their clients on phone calls. You will stay connected with your business partners, clients, and love with unlimited calls, minutes, and SMS. 

However, the AT&T cruise package’s dark side is a lack of Internet MBS. It offers 1GB of data in the premium plus package, which is not enough for you if you’re a heavy Internet user. 

In a nutshell, I suggest you go with an AT&T basic cruise package and also purchase the dedicated ship’s wifi package for better connectivity and internet experience.
