Read on for ideas on where to go in Koh Chang at night.

Kai Bae Viewpoint

Gorgeous sunsets over the sea.

firefly cruise koh chang

The Kai Bae Viewpoint is one of the best sunset viewing spots in Koh Chang. It sits on a hillside between Kai Bae Beach and Lonely Beach, with a viewing platform overlooking the ocean and small islands off the coast, including Ko Mun Nai.

The viewpoint gets a lot of visitors during sunset, so get there early if possible. You’ll also have to be careful of your belongings, as monkeys often loiter around the area. There is a small coffee shop next to the Kai Bae Viewpoint if you feel peckish during your visit.

Firefly cruise

Enjoy a romantic evening illuminated by fireflies.

firefly cruise koh chang

Joining a firefly cruise is one of the most magical ways to spend an evening in Koh Chang. It’s also a romantic setting with natural twinkly lights on a quiet night. The best time to see fireflies is on a full moon, from May to October.

As you look out for the illuminated insects, you can take in Thailand's nature in a more intimate setting. You can find firefly tours and cruises at AANA Resort & Spa or Baan Rim Nam Holiday Home.

Sunset yoga at dutalay hotel, wind down with an evening flow.

firefly cruise koh chang

Sunset yoga is a great way to unwind after a day of sightseeing, especially when accompanied by great views of the ocean. Thankfully, you’ll get the best of both by joining a sunset yoga session on the rooftop of DuTalay Hotel. You can find it towards the northern end of White Sand Beach.

Take in the sunset views and relaxed atmosphere, and wind down as the day draws to a close. The session provides yoga mats. It’s a good idea to bring mosquito repellent and a bottle of water.

White Sand Beach Night Market

Street food along a 100-metre-stretch of stalls.

firefly cruise koh chang

The White Sand Beach Night Market is arguably the most popular street food market on Koh Chang. The open-air venue stretches along the main road parallel to White Sand Beach, attracting hungry patrons from sunset until late. It’s a fun place to try local cuisine and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

You’ll find a mix of food stalls and popular bars at the White Sand Beach Night Market. From snacks like sticky rice and corn to grilled seafood and curries, there’s plenty of variety to suit everyone.

Sing your heart out after dinner in Koh Chang

firefly cruise koh chang

Karaoke is a great after-dinner activity in Koh Chang, especially if you’re with a group of friends. And the bigger the group, the better! You can show off your solo singing skills or belt out together – both best attempted when you’ve got some liquid courage in your system.

Most karaoke places in Koh Chang have English songs, but you could have a go at a Thai song to see how you fare. You can find karaoke rooms in most hotels and resorts on the island. Standouts include Sky Bar and Krok Karaoke.

Bang Bao Beach

Reggae bars and gorgeous sunsets galore.

firefly cruise koh chang

Bang Bao Beach, also known as Klong Kloi Beach, is a good place to go if you want to avoid some of Koh Chang’s rowdier nightlife areas. The beach is quiet, with just a handful of drinking spots on the sand.

You can take in gorgeous sunsets and great photo spots from Bang Bao Pier and lighthouse. There are also a few resorts and reggae bars offering hippie parties and a chilled-out vibe. You won’t find a huge crowd on Bang Bao Beach, so it’s great for a laidback night out in Koh Chang.

Bailan Beach bars

Friendly nightlife and concept bars.

firefly cruise koh chang

Bars on Bailan Beach are great for when you fancy a few drinks and good company, without the loud party atmosphere of Lonely Beach. This area is known for its live music and comfortable lounges. You’ll find reggae music, live bands, cocktails, and happy hours to keep the good times rolling.

All the best nightlife spots are less than 50 metres apart, so you can easily hop from one place to the next if you don't fancy staying still. Of course, the bars are right by the beach, so you can take a break from cocktails and music and dip your toes in the sea.

Ting Tong Bar

Lively bar with house and techno music.

firefly cruise koh chang

Ting Tong Bar is one of the most well-known nightlife venues in Koh Chang. It’s located on Lonely Beach, known as the party beach on the island. Here, you can dance the night away, lounge with a cocktail in hand, or head upstairs for some privacy.

Every evening starts with a live band, followed by a DJ spinning house and techno music. If you’re looking for some good music and drinks in Koh Chang, Ting Tong Bar is the place for you.

Clubs and bars at Lonely Beach

The party beach of koh chang.

firefly cruise koh chang

Clubs and bars at Lonely Beach are must-visits for anyone looking to party in Koh Chang. It’s one of the best places to make some new friends while enjoying strong drinks and all kinds of music. The area isn’t restricted to run-of-the-mill clubs playing EDM.

Lonely Beach has a wide variety of nightlife spots, from lively bars with fire shows and weekly parties to more relaxed lounges with cold beers and local cuisine. Everyone is here to have a good time, so feel free to meet some new people and party the night away.

White Sand Beach beer bars

Lively bars, fire shows and full-moon parties.

firefly cruise koh chang

White Sand Beach has a different atmosphere to the intense party vibe of Lonely Beach, but offers an equally memorable evening in Koh Chang. The southern end of the beach is where you’ll find a high concentration of bars, with live music playing until late.

Each bar has its own signature style. Some might host fire shows and full-moon parties, while others offer live sports and local DJs. Cocktails, happy hours, and barbecues are just a few more of the many things you can enjoy at White Sand Beach.

KOH CHANG’S ABANDONDED CRUISE SHIP AND LAGOON RESORT

Exploring Koh Chang: Trip to the abandoned Galaxy cruise liner and the Grand Lagoona Resort

Tired of endless sunbathing, souvenir hunting and sipping cocktails on the beach? Ready for a little island adventure? Then you might want to add a trip to Koh Chang’s abandoned cruise ship to your to-do list to find out what the hype about this mysterious place is all about.

When visiting Koh Chang back in 2017 we knew we’d come back eventually! 🙂 Koh Chang is one of the biggest and most attractive Islands in Thailand and due to it’s close proximity to Bangkok (It only took us 7 hours to get from Bangkok to our hotel on Koh Chang with the 12GoAsia bus + ferry combo ticket ) it’s the ideal beach getaway when you’re on a tight schedule and don’t have the time to travel all the way to the islands in the South.

The first time on Koh Chang, we had already explored quite a bit of the island on scooter (check out our other post: Koh Chang on Scooter – Exploring the beaches along the west coast ) and thought we had pretty much seen it all. SO VERY WRONG! 🙂

On our second visit we heard about this “GHOST SHIP” in walking distance to our accommodation in the Bang Bao Bay called Bang Bao Paradise Home Stay* and knew we simply could not pass on the opportunity to go and check it out for ourselves. I mean who isn’t intrigued by exploring abandoned places, especially when they come in the form of a gigantic abandonded cruise ship?

The Ghost-Cruise-Ship of Koh Chang Island - Thailand

What’s the story behind the abandoned Galaxy cruise ship?

The Galaxy used to be a real cruise ship that was transformed into a 3*hotel after heaving a leak. Other sources claim that the Galaxy was deliberately sunk on the west coast of Bang Bao beach.

Either way, the cruise liner ended up on Koh Chang and just a few years back you could actually stay on this ship-o-tel during your visit to this island! And it was quite affordable too! According to other blog posts a room would have cost you just 20 EUR / night.

But that wasn’t everything. The Galaxy was actually part of a much larger luxury Resort in the Bay of Ao Bang Bao called the “ Koh Chang Grand Lagoona Resort ” with various artificial lakes, a gorgeous beach and several other types of accommodations to choose from such as wooden lodges, bungalows, chalets and floating houses. There was even a pool house shaped as a boat. It must have looked absolutely spectacular!

firefly cruise koh chang

So was has happened to the Galaxy and the Grand Lagoona Resort? How did this place become abandoned?

Okay so this is where it gets tricky because nobody REALLY knows for sure why the Resort and the Galaxy ship-o-tel were abandoned.

Some say the owners simply ran out of money to properly maintain such a massive resort or didn’t get the paperwork right so were forced to leave.

Others however claim that the closure of the hotel is linked to several deaths that supposedly occurred on the premises such as the accidental fall of a Russian tourist from the last floor of the ship which probably sparked all the “ghost-ship-stories”.

However, when searching the internet for answers we couldn’t find any useful information and the locals didn’t want to share a lot about this place either. So I guess it’s left to everybody’s own imagination which only adds to the mysterious vibe of this place.

How to get to the abandoned cruise ship on Koh Chang?

You’ll find the abandoned Galaxy Cruise ship at the very southern tip of Koh Chang past Bang Bao Bay towards Bang Bai Beach.

On google maps it’s listed as “Sea Star” / “ Boat Chalet Koh Chang” / “Koh Chang Boat Chalet” as well as “ The Galaxy Bang Bai Beach ” (The last one being the most accurate location for the actual cruise ship location)

location the galaxy cruise ship

If you’re exploring the island on a motorbike and want to visit the abandoned shipwreck, simply follow the google maps instruction to the “ KOH CHANG GRAND LAGUNA ” . You’ll basically drive until the road ends and you’re there!

Note that you’ll pass a security guard when entering the resort area where you’ll have to pay a fee which is applicable for all non-resort-guests! (100 THB / Person, October 2019). If you enter on foot through the same road you’ll also have to pay. You can also rent a bicycle for a small fee which will make it easier to explore the grounds.

Money saving tip! How to enter the Grand Lagoona Resort for free

If you don’t want to pay the entrance fee there is another way to enter the resort area – but we only recommend this route if you’re happy to bend the rules on entering private property slightly 😉! Note that this is only available on foot, so you better pack your walking shoes!

Directions:

Coming from Klong Kloi Beach It’s about a 25 minute walk . Follow the dirt road leading through Klong Kloi Cottage passing the colourful Pizza restaurant, “ Big Mamas ” and the “ T Garten Resort ” on your right.

firefly cruise koh chang

Shortly after there is an intersection with the road taking a left turn and a small dirt path going straight. Keep walking straight and follow the path until you get to a locked gate. (That’s the part we meant when talking about “bending the rules”😉 )

No worries though, you don’t need to climb over the gate – you can simply cross the river next to it to get to the other side. There’s not a lot of water in the river – we managed to cross without even getting wet feet.

firefly cruise koh chang

Soon after you’ll reach a small paved road again which is already part of the resort area. Simply turn right and keep walking. You’ll soon be passing some old, rusty motorboats on your left – as if someone had simply forgotten them there.

firefly cruise koh chang

These boats pretty much set the scene for everything you’re about to see in this bizarre resort. Something beautiful that you know has been amazing and really cool at some point simply abandoned and left to rot away.

firefly cruise koh chang

Exploring the Grand Laguna Resort Grounds – What’s to see?

Once inside the resort area you can walk around and explore! But be prepared!

Even on a sunny day the whole thing has a very weird atmosphere and spooky vibe!

Once you’ve passed the battery of abandoned motorboats there is a road going to the left where you’ll enter the lagoon area with several artificial lakes leading you to the first floating boat-style accommodations.

firefly cruise koh chang

We could enter these boats without any problems, sit on the terrace and even explore some rooms that were left open.

We had a weird feeling walking around these floating wooden houses as you can’t stop wonder what had happened. We found remote controls for A/Cs, flash lights and hairdryers simply laying around. Folded toilet paper and towels as if housekeeping had just made their rounds. Yet, everything was a bit moldy and dusty, some things were broken and in desperate need for repairs and there was a strange rotten smell in the air…

Just like if someone or something had sucked the life out of it.

firefly cruise koh chang

If you keep walking, you’ll get your first good look of the abandoned Galaxy cruise ship in the distance – you simply can’t miss this gigantic iron shipwreck parked in the middle of the resort! 😊

There are also these Elephant statues everywhere and you’ll find more accommodation types – from more boat chalets in the lagoon lakes to wooden cabins by the river. Some were locked, some were left open as if they were asking you to have a little look around 😊

firefly cruise koh chang

Some of these rooms were really well cleaned as if new guests were about to check-in any minute. Others looked totally dated and in desperate need for some renovation completely falling apart.

firefly cruise koh chang

It reminded us of those post-apocalyptic movies where everything looks totally normal – only that it isn’t as something terrible has happened forcing people to leave within seconds.

And something else was weird! You’d expect an abandoned place to look a certain way. With plants climbing the walls of buildings, graffiti sprayed, rooms trashed and streets and pathways that are taken over by overgrown plants and so on. But here?

The grass was freshly cut as if the gardener had just made his rounds with his lawn mower. The pathways were recently swept looking all neat with no leaves or dirt. The picture-perfect beach looked spotlessly clean like out of a brochure. There was no graffiti to be seen anywhere and despite some areas looking in desperate need of a little facelift, nothing was broken or trashed.

Someone was clearly maintaining this resort. But who and for whom? There were NO PEOPLE !

firefly cruise koh chang

Visiting the abandoned Galaxy Cruise Ship

The highlight of our visit to the Grand Laguna Resort was, of course, the abandoned Galaxy Gruise Ship which some also simply call “The Ghost Ship of Koh Chang”. If you stand in front of it you’ll know why they call it that! Looking at this massive iron ship, searching window by window you almost wait for some eyes staring back at you.

firefly cruise koh chang

Unfortunately, entering the Galaxy cruise ship is strictly prohibited and the fine amounts to 3000 baht. Reading some older blog posts it used to be possible and actually quite easy to access the abandoned ship just like with the other floating wooden houses however, nowadays there is a big sign along with high-voltage cables, wooden barricades and barbed wire at all entry points making it pretty clear that they want you to stay out.

firefly cruise koh chang

Conclusion – is a trip to the abandoned Cruise ship worth it?

Although we couldn’t enter the Galaxy cruise ship itself, we’d still found this place super fascinating. It let’s your imagination run wild what might have happened here and how it used to look. So if you enjoy exploring abandoned places or are simply tired of visiting yet another temple than a visit of the ghost ship on Koh Chang and the abandoned Grand Lagoona Resort is definitely for you.

Where to stay on Koh Chang?

When visiting Koh Chang in November 2019 we decided to stay in the Bang Bao Bay area which is the less touristy part of Koh Chang. It’s also ideal for a trip to the abandoned cruise liner as you can simply walk there (20 – 30 minutes on foot).

Here you can read everything about our stay on the pier and what to do while you’re there.

We found a cute and very affordable guesthouse directly on Bang Bao Pier which we can highly recommend called Bang Bao Paradise Home Stay This cute family-run accommodation offers cozy bungalows directly over the water as well as a beautiful deck where you can relax, enjoy a delicious breakfast or watch the sunset. Some rooms are very basic with shared bathrooms and no A/C, others come equipped with A/C and ensuite-bathrooms (starting from approx. 20 USD/night). However note that there are only a view rooms available and it’s usually fully booked so be quick! 🙂

Where to stay on Koh Chang island

For visiting the abandonded cruise ship your ideal starting point is Klong Kloi Beach or Bang Bao Bay.

We stayed at the Bang Bao Paradise Home Stay* . which was ideal for a trip on foot to the ship.

* = Affiliate links.

Hey, thanks for the great post. We went there today and actually paid the 100 THB per person not knowing about the other option. There were a few people on the beach and also a small food stand offering snacks and smoothies. On our way back to our bungalow at the nearby Klong Koi Beach, I partially checked out this hidden shortcut that you’re mentioning. I saw locals driving this direction, so I was curious and walked 100-200 meters until I ended up at a crossing. In front of me, there was a gate hidden behind branches and leaves. The left road, I suspect, ends up at a house in the woods that I spotted from the official road in the north. The right road probably leads you to the abandoned resort but I didn’t follow it. Judging by the satellite pictures from Google maps you can kinda guess where this path is. Should be easy to take it next time. The rivers in this area don’t carry any water (at the moment?), so you can just cross them. Note, that there are probably no waterfalls to check out :/

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment; we truly appreciate it. It’s fantastic to hear that this site remains accessible after all these years. We visited back in 2019, and it was quite a rare sight, we haven’t seen anything like it again. How we wish we had a better drone at the time!

There’s a chance that the route we took may no longer exist or is now monitored. However, I believe that 100 THB per person is quite reasonable.

We hope you have an amazing time on Koh Chang – it’s one of our favorite islands in Thailand.

I came across similar “resorts” in the Chiang Rai area and was told by a ” house sitter” that they were the result of an investment boom after the ’79 crash. There are people so rich in Thailand, they do not know what to do with their money and follow any fad going. After a while, when that investment doesn’t catch on and generates noincome, they simply lose interest, abandon their project, and move on to the next thing. Some eery places like that as well in the Malaysian Highlands…

I visited Koh Chang some time back in 2004 (might have been ’05) living somewhere on the west coast of the island. I remember walking the beach and only spotting a handful of (more or less) developed resorts and as I went north they became more and more sparse, ending up with what I remember as a bamboo scaffolding with hammocks here and there.

I was told at this point that Koh Chang was mainly used by Thai people, and of course the odd back packer. On the east side of the island all I remember is an abandoned resort and a demolished / abandoned fishing village where most of (if not all) of the buildings had been built in the water on stilts.

One day we went as far south on the west coast as we could, and ran into this place. Apparently a place in business, everything looked shiny and new, but there were apparently no people, besides the two guards by the gate.

We asked them if we could go inside and see, which they agreed to, after talking to their boss. Inside the resort we were greeted by a guy referring to himself as Mr. O. I assumed he was the owner, or at least the manager at this point. We weren’t looking for a place to stay, but he quickly arranged for us to sail on his personal boat to a small island further south to look at corals. A couple of young ladies appeared or of nowhere with umbrellas to shade us from the sun when walking from the main building to the boat.

Looking back in still not sure if we ever saw anyone else in the resort. There were no cars, and apparently no people at all.

I do remember it as the cruise ship was placed in a small bay, and that we were told it was supposed to be a casino ship that would sail off the cost and to international waters with its residents to be able to gamble.

I still have no clue if this was true or not. But I remember this seemingly grand but very empty resort very vividly from back then, and it’s a recurring wonder what was adversely going on at that place…

Great read btw.

The restaurant on the beach used to be open sometimes, and sometimes not. The pool used to be available sometimes, and sometimes dry.

I used the pool for the last time back in March 2020. Later on during the lockdown they closed up the whole resort. The people at the gate told me that the owner had decided to keep it shut until the “pandemic” was over.

I used to love visiting this place when I was on Koh Chang. There are so many things were were blessed with that future generations will never experience.

now there are staff there. a pool. a bar and you can also spend the night there. about 30 tourists were spread across the area, by scooter and car. the way over the gate/river is now fenced with barbed wire but you can climb over it. however, people drive “patrol” inside and ask for the ticket. I just said my friends had that. All rooms are locked. unfortunately you are no longer alone.

Hi Maex, thanks for your comment and your update about the cruise ship! Seems with high season kicking in they increased staff and checks for tickets with more people visiting the area. The pool and a few staff were already there when we visited in November 2019 but nobody cared and the pool was still empty + bar not yet open. We really enjoyed having the beautiful beach to ourselves but with 30 people spread across the whole area it’s probably still not too bad.

Enjoy the rest of your time in Thailand and safe travels!!!

Tucked away in the Trat Province of Thailand, the island of Koh Chang is one of the most scenic and laidback islands in the country. To help you plan your Koh Chang itinerary while island hopping in Thailand , I’ve detailed the 16 best things to do in Koh Chang. From water sports and waterfalls to massages and sunsets, there is something for everyone on this paradise island.

Beach with palm trees. Klong Prao Beach, Koh Chang, Thailand

This guide is more than a list of the best beaches in Koh Chang, things to do and see. We’ll start with what to do on Koh Chang and once you are already dreaming of your trip there will move to the practical stuff. At the end of this blog post, you will find travel tips like how to get to Koh Chang, where to stay and the best time to travel to the island.

Did you know? Koh Chang translates to Elephant Island. From the sky, you’ll quickly see why; Koh Chang island is shaped just like an elephant’s head.

Best things to do in Koh Chang, Thailand

Unlike Koh Phangan, an island with a “nightlife reputation”, and Koh Tao , an island known for its world-class diving, Koh Chang flies under the radar and is typically missed by most tourists that visit Thailand.

But, with a beautiful national park, aquamarine bays, friendly locals, and nearby islands, it would be a pity to skip Koh Chang.

If you’re planning to visit this side of Thailand , add these 16 best Koh Chang activities to add to your to-do list:

1. Watch Koh Chang sunsets

You simply cannot go to Koh Chang without watching a sunset on the beach. Put on your favorite playlist, bring a drink, and find the perfect spot.

Photo of a woman sitting on Koh Chang Beach watching the sunset.

Here are a few of our favorite places to watch the sunset on the island of Koh Chang:

  • Klong Prao Beach, Koh Chang

Not only is Klong Prao Beach one of the best places to watch the sunset in Koh Chang, but it’s one of the best locations to see the sunset in the entire country. Situated on the west coast of the island, this beach is calm and tranquil, making for a relaxing sunset experience.

The beach is littered with tall palm trees and in addition to a front row seat for the sunset, you’ll also get to see the silhouettes of the rolling hills in the distance. No need to say it’s one of the best beaches in Koh Chang.

  • Lonely Beach, Koh Chang

One of the reasons why we love Koh Chang so much is because unlike other islands in Thailand, Koh Chang’s beaches stay relatively garbage-free; Lonely Beach is one of them.

Sure, Koh Chang Lonely Beach is known for its beach bars and parties, but it is also one of the best places in Koh Chang to watch the sunset. Grab a drink with friends or sit on the white sand beach in solitude while the sun dips below the horizon.

2. Check out Khlong Phlu Waterfall

Along with epic sunsets, Koh Chang is known for its waterfalls.

Khlong Phlu Waterfall is one of the most popular falls on the island, and it’s easy to see why. Not only is it breathtakingly beautiful, but you can swim right beneath it in the natural pool. Don’t forget your swimming suit; the water is cool and clean.

  • How To Get To Khlong Phlu Waterfall

To reach Khlong Phlu Waterfall, you’ll need to enter Mo Koh Chang National Park. For foreigners, expect to pay 200 baht per person (about $6 USD).

From the parking area, a half-mile hike will take you to the waterfall. This is an easy trail that can be completed by visitors of all fitness levels.

3. Go snorkeling in Koh Chang

The island is home to pristine coral reefs and with gentle tides and nutrient-rich waters, it creates a natural habitat for all types of fish. Whether you join a guided tour or you do a self-guided tour, you will love what you can discover in the ocean surrounding the island.

To find the best snorkeling spots on the island, go to Bang Bao Pier and sign up for a Koh Chang snorkeling trip or catch a boat to one of the small neighboring islands: Koh Rang or Koh Wai snorkeling spots are amazing. These islands boast some of the most beautiful reefs in the Gulf of Thailand.

A few sea creatures to look for while snorkeling the island reefs are the yellow boxfish and the moray eel.

Here is a Snorkeling Tour in Koh Chang (click to see it) with good reviews that you can book online via GetYourGuide .

4. Go for a day trip to Koh Yuak

Another one of the best things to do on the island of Koh Chang is to visit Koh Yuak.

This small island is accessible only by boat and has beautiful white sand beaches for soaking up the sun. There are also plenty of opportunities for water sports such as kayaking or paddleboarding.

To get to Koh Yuak from Koh Chang, go to the west side of the island near Kai Bae Viewpoint. Many locals park their boats here and offer rides to tourists.

If you’re struggling to find a boat to take you to Koh Yuak, ask one of the many resorts near Kai Bae Viewpoint and they will easily be able to point you in the right direction.

5. Volunteer with the Koh Chang Animal Project

Any animal lovers out there looking for what to do in Koh Chang?

Koh Chang Animal Project is a worthwhile cause that helps animals in need on the island.

The facility was created by a woman named Lisa McAlonie whose goal was to develop a place that helped locals understand, learn, and care for their pets. They also provide care for stray street dogs and cats that have been abandoned.

Volunteering at the Animal Project is one of the best things to do on the island because not only will you learn a lot about caring for animals, but you’ll also be giving back to the island. You can set up a time to volunteer by going to their website, Koh Chang Animal Project .

6. Happy Hour on Koh Chang beaches

One of the most affordable things you can do on the island of Koh Chang is enjoy happy hour at a beach bar with friends.

Watch the sunset is one of the top things to do in Koh Chang, Thailand. Here you can the legs of a man on a deck in front of the sea. The sun is setting in the background over the water.

Unlike many other destinations in the world, Thailand is wildly affordable and that remains true for this paradise as well. A happy hour drink or two will only cost a few bucks and it’s a great way to relax and enjoy the casual vibe of the island. For more info about Thailand travel costs click here.

But, an important thing to know about enjoying happy hour in Koh Chang is knowing which beach bars to go to. Here are our favorite beach bars in Koh Chang:

  • Mimo Beach Bar

This beach bar remains a hidden gem on the island. Grab a few cheap beers (Singha is our favorite) and exchange stories with the bartender as you wait for the sun to set.

To find Mimo Beach Bar, head to the south end of Lonely Beach.

  • Beautiful Bar

I think the name speaks for itself here… Beautiful Bar is situated right on the ocean, just south of Lonely Beach. Cocktails at this beach bar are delicious and affordable and if you stay long enough, you’ll get to watch an epic fireshow in Koh Chang.

7. Koh Chang dive experience

Sure, Koh Chang isn’t as well-known for its diving as Koh Tao , but it’s still a great place to get your scuba diving fix. There are some amazing dive sites in Koh Chang for both beginner and experienced divers, so spend a day exploring the underwater world.

The best Koh Chang diving spots are:

Whether you come for snorkeling or scuba diving, you’ll be thoroughly impressed by the reef here. Thanks to the national park that protects this area, the sealife is thriving.

Another awesome dive site is the HTMS Chang Wreck, a planned shipwreck for divers. If your current certification permits it, this dive would be an incredible activity to add to your Koh Chang to do list.

Here are three options for Koh Chang scuba diving experiences:

8. Visit a fishing village

One of the most unique things to do in Koh Chang is to visit a fishing village. Salakkok is a fishing village located on the south end of the island and it’s a great place to immerse yourself into the Thai culture. Among all Koh Chang tourist attractions, this is the lesser known, but it’s worth doing it. Watch the locals living and working in this secluded village, as well as take part in some of their day-to-day activities.

A few of the best things to do in Salakkok village include:

  • Firefly Watching

If you decide to visit Salakkok Fishing Village at all, you must stay until the sun goes down. Take a traditional Thai boat into the dark mangroves and watch as fireflies come into view. Soon you’ll be dazzled by thousands of them flying around you. This is truly one of the top things to do in Koh Chang.

  • Explore Mangroves

Take a canoe tour here to experience the quiet mangroves of southern part of the island. This traditional Thai boat ride will expose you to some of the most secluded areas of the island.

9. See the island from above

There’s no better way to see Koh Chang than from above. With its lush jungle, rolling hills, and gorgeous beaches surrounded by bright blue water, catching a glimpse of it all from a viewpoint is one of the best things to do in Koh Chang.

Woman on the top of a viewpoint. You can see one of the best beaches in Koh Chang Island, a few hotels, and many trees.

  • Kai Bae Viewpoint

The first viewpoint I suggest visiting is Kai Bae Viewpoint. From here, you’ll be able to see the Koh Man Nai and the expansive views of the Gulf of Thailand from two separate observation decks.

We really enjoyed this Koh Chang viewpoint because it’s a great place to spend time; they’ve built a small cafe near the viewpoint that is perfect for refreshments and quick snacks.

  • White Sand Beach Viewpoint

Another popular viewpoint in Koh Chang is White Sand Beach Viewpoint. In my opinion, this one doesn’t quite compare to the Kai Bae Viewpoint, but it still offers sweeping views of the sea and the white sand beach below.

My biggest reservation about this viewpoint is that there are plenty of macaques (monkeys) waiting to prey on tourists. Monkeys aren’t my cup of tea, but if you like them, you might enjoy this viewpoint more than I did.

  • Ao Ka Rang Viewpoint

A hidden gem that goes by the name of Ao Ka Rang. Located on the southeastern leg of the island, it is a lot quieter than other areas that tend to attract tourists.

So whether you want a view of the dense jungle interior or a view of the bay filled with tiny islands, Ao Ka Rang is the place to go.

10. Kayak to Koh Man Nai

For adventurous activities in Koh Chang, consider renting a kayak and paddling out to the small island Koh Man Nai.

Woman kayaking in crystal clear sea in Thailand, near some limestone formations.

Koh Man Na island is located just off the west coast of Koh Chang near Lonely Beach. Kayaks are cheap to rent and the island isn’t difficult to reach thanks to its close proximity to the mainland.

Once you reach Koh Man Nai, spend some time on the less-crowded beaches and take a dip in the ocean to cool off before your return paddling trip.

11. Experience Koh Chang’s Nightlife

Sure, Koh Chang isn’t Koh Phangan or Koh Phi Phi (two islands popularly known for their beach parties), but the nightlife in Koh Chang shouldn’t be overlooked.

If you’re a backpacker or simply looking to have a few cocktails while listening to music, there are many bustling bars and nightclubs around the island. I suggest spending time in Lonely Beach, an area known for Koh Chang nightlife, fun hostels and good parties.

After watching the sunset on the beach, head into the town near Lonely Beach and discover glow-in-the-dark parties, cheap buckets of booze, and friendly travelers looking to meet new friends.

12. Take a Boat to Koh Wai

For even more beach beauty, take a day trip out to the island of Koh Wai, located just south of Koh Chang.

Once you get to the island, spend your time wandering around and exploring this little paradise, snorkeling and discovering the incredible reefs, or just relaxing on the beach.

There are two ways to get to Koh Wai: by speedboat or by slow boat. There are several trips to Koh Wai each day from the pier at Bang Bao. Expect to pay more for the speed boat than the slow boat. To be safe, I would budget approximately $15 each way for the boat ride.

13. Hike to the top of Koh Chang

Get off the beaten path by summiting the island’s tallest mountain, Mount Salakphet. From the top of this peak, you’ll see the coast of Cambodia to the north, a sprawling valley to the west, and an expansive view down south.

But before you jump on the trail, it’s important to note that this hike is not for the faint of heart. During your trek, you’ll conquer nearly 2,500 feet of elevation gain in just a few miles. With the heat and humidity, be sure you’re prepared with plenty of water and replenishing electrolytes.

14. Relax on Koh Chang best beaches

You can’t go to a Thai island without spending time at a beach. Luckily, this island has plenty of them and they are some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. So here are two of our favorites Koh Chang Beaches:

Beach on Koh Chang with white sand and turquoise sea. There a palm trees along the beach.

For one of the island’s prettiest beachside vistas, head to the west side of the island to Klong Prao Beach. Whether you’re traveling as a couple or with your family, this beach is the perfect place to enjoy a drink, take in some sun and surf, or just relax for an afternoon.

  • White Sand Beach, Koh Chang

Venture north to another one of Koh Chang’s best beaches, White Sand Beach. This beach stretches over two kilometers and thanks to its pure white sand, it’s popular with couples, families, and backpackers alike.

With plenty of restaurants lining White Sand Beach Koh Chang, you won’t have to go far to find food or drinks, which makes it the perfect place to spend an entire day.

15. See Wat Salak Petch

If you didn’t spend enough time in Bangkok to see the beautiful temples, you’re in luck! There is an incredible temple on the island called Wat Salak Petch.

Ornately decorated, Wat Salak Petch is one of the best things to see in Koh Chang if you want to get away from the crowds and immerse yourself in Thai culture. Bring a little extra money with you during this outing to donate to the temple and to purchase small knick-knacks and bracelets from the locals.

16. Go to Koh Chang Night Market

We can’t talk about the best things to do in Koh Chang without talking about food.

When the sun goes down, head to the White Sand Beach Night Market and indulge in some of the island’s best cuisine. The night market in Koh Chang is open until 11 pm every night and offers a variety of dishes that are sure to please everyone.

Photo of seafood BBQ, a typical food at Thailand night markets.

This is the perfect place to eat in Koh Chang for dinner before returning to your hotel or hostel for the night. You’ll find fresh seafood, BBQ skewers, and a variety of Thai desserts (try a roti, you won’t regret it). Prices at the night market are much cheaper than anything you’ll find in one of the resort restaurants.

Now that you know what to do in Koh Chang, beaches, adventures and viewpoints, let’s talk about travel tips. Below you will find all the info you need to plan your Koh Chang holiday.

How many days do you need in Koh Chang?

How many days should you stay in Koh Chang? Well, that depends!

It’s one of the largest islands in Thailand, so it would take weeks to explore all that it has to offer. That said, Koh Chang is still worth visiting even if you only have a few days.

Ideally, you’ll have at least four days on the island so that you can visit the national park, Koh Chang beaches, and take day trips to the gorgeous islands nearby. Spending four days on the island will also justify the extensive travel needed to get there.

Located near the eastern Thai border, the island might be a good stop on your way to island-hop along the coast of Cambodia .

Getting to Koh Chang, Thailand

There are several different ways to get to Koh Chang but it will completely depend on where you’re coming from. Here are the most common ways to reach the island:

How to get to Koh Chang by Flight

The fastest way to get to Koh Chang is by plane. Although there isn’t an airport on the island of Koh Chang, there is a small airport on the mainland in Trat province.

Direct flights depart daily from Bangkok. Bangkok Airways serves this route, but flight times change depending on the day of the week and the time of year. You can search for the best flights to Koh Chang using Skyscanner or Kiwi.com .

Once you reach the Trat airport, you’ll take a taxi over to Ao Thammachat Pier. At the pier, purchase a ticket to Ao Sapparot Pier in Koh Chang. You’ll pay approximately $2-3 for a one-way ferry ride.

How to get to Koh Chang by bus

Bus in Thailand, traveling from Bangkok to Rayong.

If you need an affordable way to travel to Koh Chang, consider taking the bus from Bangkok. There are many buses that travel from Bangkok to Koh Chang each day from the Ekkamai Bus Terminal or the Mo Chit Bus Terminal.

The buses are usually comfortable and cost between 300 and 450 baht depending on the time of year. It will take approximately 6 hours to get from Bangkok to Ao Thammachat Pier in Trat.

From the pier, take one of the ferries across to Koh Chang. Remember, that ferry ride will cost approximately $2-3 USD one way.

How to get to Koh Chang by minibus

My favorite way to travel in Thailand is by “minibus”. And if you’re new to traveling in Thailand, a minibus is what they call those large cargo vans that can fit 12-15 people.

These minibuses are cheap, comfortable, and a lot faster than riding the bus. Hop on a minibus at the Ekkamai Bus Terminal (conveniently a stop on the BTS) and expect to pay around 450 to 600 baht one way.

Another option is to book a transfer from your hotel in Bangkok (or in any destination nearby) to the island. These services are reliable and you can book in advance, so you don’t need to worry during your trip. Have a look at this option of transfer from Bangkok/ Hua Hin / Pattaya to Koh Chang .

Travel tip:

If you are planning to travel to Koh Chang by bus or minibus, the best bet is to search for transportation options on Bookaway and 12Go .

These two websites offer all modes of transportation in Thailand and Southeast Asia, you can search for routes, timetables and book online. They will be a bit more expensive than going to the bus station to buy your tickets in advance (which is necessary during high season), but it’s fast, easy and reliable.

Where to stay in Koh Chan g: hotels and hostels

As for accommodation on Koh Chang, you have a few options.

Just like anywhere else in Thailand, you’ll find plenty of hostels, but expect to pay more for a dorm room bunk bed here than in other places in the country. For the best hostels in Koh Chang, check out Pajamas Koh Chang or Cafe Del Sunshine .

On the other hand, there are mid-range hotels and upscale resorts in Koh Chang as well. Our favorite place to stay in Koh Chang was at The Chill Resort & Spa , which provided luxury at a reasonable price.

The Chill Resort at Kai Bae Beach, one of the best hotels in Koh Chang!

But if you’re looking to splurge, there’s no better place to stay in Koh Chang than Marina Sands Resort Koh Chang . Expect top-tier service, privacy, and luxury at this beachfront property.

You just found your luxury resort in Koh Chang!

If you are not sure about where to stay in Koh Chang, no worries. Keep searching for your Koh Chang accommodation on Booking.com and Agoda , they usually have the best properties and prices in Thailand. For more tips about how to book the perfect room for any trip read this Accommodation Guide here .

How to get Around Koh Chang, Thailand

Once you reach the island, you can choose from several different transportation options.

By far the easiest way to get around Koh Chang is by motorbike. Renting a motorbike will cost approximately $8 USD per day and there are rental shops on every corner. Be sure to bring your passport because you’ll need to present it to the motorbike rental shop.

Note: If you’re unsure how to rent a motorbike or you need assistance, I recommend asking your accommodation host. They are sure to be very helpful. And don’t forget to buy Travel Insurance before traveling and driving your motorbike in Thailand., SafetyWing and HeyMondo are good options. Also, read Love and Road’s Travel Insurance Guide here .

If you’ve never driven a motorbike before, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend starting in Thailand. Instead, you might consider taking songthaews to get around the island.

Songthaews are truck taxis that can carry many people at once. These truck taxis are readily available, so flag one down, pay the small fee, and reach your destination without having to drive yourself.

When To Visit Koh Chang?

When planning your Koh Chang visit, try to schedule your trip during the dry season. Dry season in Thailand lasts from November until April. It’s the best time to visit Koh Chang and many other destinations in the country.

During these months, you’ll experience more sunshine and cooler weather. Unfortunately, this is also considered “high season” in Thailand, so you can expect more tourists during these months.

Luckily, Koh Chang is far less popular of a destination than other Thai islands like Koh Samui or Koh Tao , so you’ll still get to experience this island paradise without fighting massive crowds during these months.

ThaiFun Sightseeing and Snorkeling Day Cruise

Thaifun boat trip, Koh Chang

Thaifun Day Trip to Islands South of Koh Chang

This is a sightseeing and snorkelling trip that includes a couple of stops for snorkelling and also a couple of stops at other islands.  I total you’ll pass 15 islands during the day trip.  This is in addition to seeing the west coat of Koh Chang from the sea.  Unlike other boat trips, Thaifun picks passengers up on the beach from outside their resort.  There’s no long pick up truck taxi ride down to Bangbao to endure.

Thaifun has friendly, fun English speaking which will also keep you entertained during the day.  Passengers have comfy individual seats with cushions, and deckchairs are also available.  There’s none of the hard wooden bench seating found on the cheaper snorkeling trips boats.  Passengers can opt to sit in the shade on one of two decks or on the rooftop sundeck.  Western toilets and fresh water showers are also available onboard. Needless to say, snorkelling and safety equipment are provided for all passengers.

The pick up time from the beach outside your resort will be around 08:00 – 09:00.  You’ll return around 17:30 – 18:30 .

The trip only runs during the high season.  From early November until early May.

The price for the Thaifun day cruise is 1,490 Baht.  Children under 10 years old are half price.

This doesn’t include the entrance fee for the Koh Chang Marine National Park which is 200 Baht for Adults and 100 Baht for kids.  This fee is payable, in cash, to National Park rangers during the day trip.

Tickets can be bought at any tour agent on the island.

Lunch, snacks, fresh fruit, tea, coffee and drinking water are included in the price.  But bring some cash, not only for the park fees, but also in case you want a beer or coke during the day.

Thaifun day cruise, Koh Chang

What to Expect on the Thaifun Day Cruise

The Thaifun boat moors at the north of the island.  Early morning it will set off, hugging the coastline.  The 24 metre vessel has a tender.  This is used to pick passengers up from the beach outside their resort.

(If you are staying away from the beach Thaifun will provide free transport by minibus from your hotel to the nearest beachfront pick up location).

If you are staying on White Sand beach, you will be one of the first to be picked up and last to be dropped off.  The plus side is that you can grab the best seats.

If you want views of Koh Chang in the morning and a sunset view in the evening, then get seats on the starboard (right hand) side of the boat.  The only downside is that these will also be the sunniest / hottest seats.  Sit on the port (left) side to get the most shade during the day.

As people are picked up, those already aboard can enjoy free tea or coffee and snacks.  Having picked passengers up, the first island that you’ll pass is Koh Klum.  It lies a few kilometres south of Koh Chang.  This is a large island with just one place to stay –   Koom Nangphaya Resort .  By now passengers will be able to see Koh Wai, Koh Mak and the snorkelling and dive spots around Koh Rang.

If the sky is clear, the hills on Koh Kood should also be visible behind Koh Mak.  The boat will then head towards Koh Wai where it makes the first stop of the day.

There’s a coral reef just off the beach on Koh Wai, so this is a great spot for kids to practice snorkeling in shallow water.  Good quality face-masks, snorkels and life jackets are provided for all passengers.   You don’t have to get off the boat.  Some passengers will choose to sunbathe on the roof top sun deck.  Others will disembark but take a walk on the beach or play on the sand.

After around 45 minutes, it’s time to leave for Koh Mak.  Lunch is served during this section of the trip.  Lunch is a buffet style, with a good selection of mostly Thai and Italian dishes and an abundance of fresh fruit.  Dishes are prepared onboard and any specific dietary requirements can be taken into account.  The spiciness of the Thai food is toned down to a ‘tourist friendly’ strength.  So is suitable for kids as well as adults.

Having passed the black volcanic rocks and white sand beach on Koh Kham, the Thaifun will moor in the bay at the north of Koh Mak.  There isn’t much snorkeling here but you can swim or take the tender ashore and enjoy a walk on the 2 kilometre long beach.

After an hour on Koh Mak, the Thaifun will depart for Koh Rang.  This is a large island, to the west of Koh Mak which is surrounded by islets.

This is where the best snorkelling and scuba diving sites are located. You’ll usually see an tropical fish and large undersea fields of soft and hard corals.

When the ship arrives at Koh Rang, National Park rangers will board and collect the 200 Baht  / 100 Baht marine park fee for adults and kids.

Having spent an hour or so exploring the underwater world, it’s time to board the boat again and head north back to Koh Chang.  By now passengers are probably a bit peckish. There’s one more stop on the way, at the peninsula near Bangbao.  There’s a troop of wild monkeys that live there.  They descend down to the rocks to greet passing boats.  Waiting hopefully for some fruit to be thrown their way.   If you’re in luck you can get some great photos of dozens of macaques scurrying around the rocky shoreline.

Having seen the monkeys, the Thaifun will then begin dropping passengers off as it heads home and the sun goes down.

Wonderful Tour today and you see a lot of the islands, three break for snorkeling, (i had a lot of fishes there), the food with lunch and cookies is absolutely ok, for the drinking it is good to take an own bottle for water with you. Thanks to Knock and the whole Team for a very pleasant and interesting day. For the people from White Sand Beach a long day about 10 hours…but everything worth!

I think you should contact Thai Fun if you are disappointed with the quantity and quality of fish swimming around.

Although I’m not sure if they can arrange fish to be in specific locations at specific times. They aren’t easy to train.

We, 3 persons did a snorkeling trip from Koh Chang and did not watch one colored fish. The second stop was advised as very well. Very, very bad for this money. Before I put my statement in all pages like TripAdvisor etc. I ask for a refund of the payment. In this case I will sent you my bank account.

Private Speedboat Trips off Koh Chang

Siem Reap to Koh Kood, Koh Kood to Siem Reap – Private Transfer

Yacht Charter – Sailing around the Koh Chang Islands

sunset yacht

Yacht Charter in the Koh Chang Islands has become one of the more quietly popular Koh Chang activities over the last few years as the sailing community has discovered this wonderful area on the eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand.

The sailing grounds extend out among the 52 inhabited and mostly uninhabited islands which make up the archipelago. There are superb peaceful anchorages along the way and it is all charted and mapped.

You can explore the tiny islands with just a couple of resorts like Koh Wai , Koh Klum and Koh Laoya , the Marine Park area at Koh Rang or lay up at the delightful Koh Ngam .

Those aside, you can also head shore at Koh Mak , sleepy and laid back as ever and of course, Koh Kood, only a bit smaller than Koh Chang but with nothing like the same development.

The yacht charter normally commences from Koh Chang out of Salak Phet bay in the south east corner of the island.

I was wondering if I could get some prices and availability for a Lagoon catamaran 420 bareboat during the month of March for 2 weeks ( any 2 weeks are ok)

Also, what kind of license would I need to provide ??? ICC ok ??

Are there any extra costs associated with the charter, such as National park fees, mooring fees, marina fees etc…….

Also I have never been to Koh Chang, what is the archipelago like for sailing ?? would you have an itinerary for a 2 week charter that you would suggest which I can look at.

Looking forward to hearing back from you

Regards Valerio

Is Koh Chang Expensive? Breaking Down the Costs

The last thing you want indecision on when planning a trip abroad is your ability to cover the costs. Will hotels be too expensive for me? Is there local transport and if not, can I afford to rent a car or bike? What about meals and activities? Will I need to provide my own meals, and if that is the case, are there ample provisions at my destination, and at what price?

Please take a deep breath, and hold it in for a second or two before exhaling: Costs will not ruin your vacation to Koh Chang , regardless of what income bracket you are in, as there is something there for every budgetary consideration . The bottom line is you are going to have a wonderful vacation , and I will hopefully assist via this post:

Vacationing anywhere in Thailand (including Koh Chang) cannot be considered expensive unless you are unreasonable in your approach, choosing accommodation that is above your means. Food is wonderfully inexpensive at all but the most exclusive hotels or restaurants and transportation is dirt cheap.

Located close to the border with Cambodia, Koh Chang is Thailand’s second-largest island after Phuket. It is much quieter than either Phuket or Samui (the third largest island) despite a major increase in tourism, and the benefits of fewer tourists are good news to the tourists that make an effort to visit.

Supply vs. demand is a universally understood concept, and the more you have of something, the less each item is worth. Go to your local fruit wholesalers in the early morning when they have tons of bananas, and you will pay a different price to the one you’d pay if you went later in the day when bananas were becoming scarce.

Choose to travel in-season when many tourists are looking for accommodation and eating in restaurants and just watch the prices soar . The first rule of travel is to do so out of season wherever possible. Airline prices improve , accommodation and food are less costly , and many other facets of travel are directly affected.

Koh Chang is no different, so aim for out of season, but don’t despair if that’s not practical – even in-season, prices are rarely exorbitant , and if you find they are, just try another hotel, restaurant, souvenir stall, etc.

Getting There

Elephant Island – or, more correctly, Koh Chang in Thai – has no airport , so flying is out. Still, Koh Chang is only 30 minutes away (and easily reachable via minibus or private car) from Trat province on the mainland via the roll-on/roll-off ferry. You might need to fly into Trat (TDX) from elsewhere (possibly Bangkok); see below.

Once you land in Trat, there are minivans and cars outside the airport offering door-to-door service from the Trat Airport to your hostel or hotel on Koh Chang . The combined minibus/ferry ticket is usually THB550 per person.

The minivans tend to use the faster, ‘Ferry Koh Chang’ service from Ao Thammachat in Trat Province to the Ao Sapporot terminal on Chang.

Koh Chang From Bangkok

There are four daily flights from Bangkok to Trat (the town in the province of the same name), all operated by Bangkok Airways. The flight takes around 60 minutes .

Suppose you cannot face another flight after arriving in Thailand: Buses and minivans travel from Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) to the pier for Koh Chang and Trat town for those staying over. Collect your luggage and clear customs , proceeding to door number eight on the first level . Look for the service desk of the tour company ‘Suvarnabhumi Burapa Co, Ltd.’

You can choose between a microbus or a 40-seater bus at a strangely similar price . Some buses will proceed directly to Koh Chang , rolling straight onto the ferry

You can rent a car in Bangkok and drive to Koh Chang , but since we are discussing the costs of visiting Chang, that might be a little excessive. However, having your own vehicle on call speeds up your travel times if you are very short of time.

The most budget-friendly way to get there is to take the Skytrain to Ekkamai (Eastern) Bus station and hop on the 999 bus around eight or nine am. (Later buses cost more, so don’t sleep in that morning!) The trip costs THB260 and takes five hours.

Onto the hourly ferry next (another THB80) for the 30-minute sail . A songthaew on the island charges about THB125 per passenger, depending on where you are staying, taking you to your hotel . Bang Bao is a little further, at the southern end of Chang, and will cost THB150 each.

For transportation on the island , use the songthaews or tuk-tuks or even hitch-hike if you care to. Renting motorcycles would be the next best option but would certainly impact your budget.

Bangkok – Koh Chang is THB930 (THB465 in each direction)

Restaurant Meals in Koh Chang are THB1600 (Add THB950 per week for a couple of drinks daily)

Self-catering or street stalls is THB910 (Add THB350 per week for a couple of drinks daily)

Snacks and drinks during the day THB1050

Accommodation is THB2600 for the ‘budgeteers’ or THB11 200 for more luxury.

Transportation on the Island is THB700

Activities (Optional) are THB3000

(All costs are per person/ per week – note that sharing accommodation will be half the costs I have quoted, so make friends quickly!)

Meals on Koh Chang

The biggest mistake westerners make regarding food when traveling to other countries is to make snap judgments regarding the available food and then eat at fast-food joints or fancy restaurants. This is almost always because you are either not sure of the sanitary conditions of the cooks’ workplace or because the food looks unappetizing.

On occasion, you will be correct. However, for 98% of these judgments, you will be very wrong. Simply look at the locals ; are they frequenting the street stall or vendor? Do they seem to be enjoying the meal? If both answers are in the affirmative, do yourself a culinary and educational favor , and sit down (if seats are free).

Locals do not eat at dodgy food stalls and the frequency of meals being both produced and served works in your favor. At a busy spot, food doesn’t have time to sit and spoil , and you have a far bigger chance of picking up a bug at a fast-food joint, particularly in Asia, where people prefer food that has flavor .

Eating ‘on the street,’ so to speak, is an integral part of submerging yourself into the country’s ethos. Try the local cuisine , and if you’re unsure at first, ask to see in the pots. You will usually be welcomed, and you can just point at what interests you .

Street stalls abound on Chang , with Pad Thai, Thai omelets, the ubiquitous fried rice, and Tom Yum soup the norm, but many other dishes are also available. Western-style food, like smoothies and salads with local ingredients, is very popular, and you will normally spend around THB50 for a medium-sized meal .

Avoid fizzy drinks and alcohol if you are on a budget, or create a special spot on your planner list for them, as two drinks might easily cost more than your entire meal . If you decide to eat at restaurants, your meal cost may increase by 50-100%, but the prices will not be high if it’s a simple, locally patronized eatery.

The Austrian/Thai couple that runs the Lucky Gecko in Bailan has a really nice menu with several cuisines at very reasonable prices. Breakfasts might be fried bananas and condensed milk with coffee for THB30 and a lunch of five or six pork satays for THB40. Finally, a fried rice dinner and a salad or seafood for THB60 give you a typical day’s meal spending. Add THB50 if you have a beer, water, or soda. (Or buy these at the local store at lower prices )

Supermarket Prices

  • Milk – one liter = THB50
  • Beer Std size and brand THB80
  • Bottle of wine THB600
  • 1kg of cold meat THB450
  • 1kg of basic cheese THB700
  • 20 x cigarettes THB115 for local brands and THB150 for international brands

Activities on Koh Chang

Continuing our theme of a budget vacation, there is not much on Chang to add to your sightseeing resume, and it’s mainly long hikes, exploring the villages, and slow-roasting your body on the beach for you. Unless, of course, you crack open that piggy bank just a little, in which case you can:

  • Take an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) course
  • Scuba Dive – The Marine Park off Chang provides a wide range of diving, from coral outcrops to shallow, sloping reefs ideal for snorkeling. You can also dive the recently sunk Royal Thai Navy ship HTMS Chang, which has become a second home for a wide range of marine life, including barracuda, eels, and the odd turtle and reef shark.
  • Take in the crocodile/snake’ show’ for THB200
  • Take a boat trip to the National Park. THB 880
  • Elephant trekking is THB800 for an hour, and there are currently six elephant camps on Koh Chang (‘Elephant Island’), which allow you to join the Ellis for a swim, feed, and take a ride on them. The most popular and possibly humane camp is Ban Kwan Chang, reportedly supported by the Asian Elephant Foundation.
  • Snorkeling is very popular in the water off and around Chang, and many operators offer the service at reasonable prices. The ‘five island’ snorkeling tour is the best known, with boats departing from Bang Bao or Kai Bae Beach (on the west coast) and heading into the Koh Chang Marine Park.
  • Thai cooking lessons are great fun, and many single-day courses cost around THB1400, teaching you a starter, main course, and dessert at least, but beware; you’re expected to eat what you create…
  • Hike to Klong Plu Waterfall – Due to it being the easiest accessible waterfall on the west coast, Klong Plu is the most frequented on the island. Near the northern end of Klong Prao, a short stroll through the jungle ejects you at this attractive waterfall. Visit quite early in the morning, thus avoiding the crowds. THB200.

There is also archery , kayaking , and even more. Still, each activity will ruffle the feathers of your budget, so plan accordingly and avoid running into a budget wall later in the trip.

Accommodation on Koh Chang

Starting at around THB300 for a night , hostels on Koh Chang are not expensive , but tariffs can certainly rise sharply to THB4000 at the resorts . If you’d rather splash out a little on sleeping comfortably in a pleasant environment with a few extra amenities, then plan on spending from THB1500 per night.

There is a multitude of resorts and hotel clusters on Chang that give incredibly good value for money – Take the Aana Resort, for example:

Located beside the Klong Praow Beach in Ko Chang, this resort offers contemporary accommodations with views of the river, pool, garden, or mountains. It houses five dining options and a spa, and breakfasts offered are Continental, American, or Buffet.

Aana Resort & Spa’s palatial rooms are equipped with an intimate private balcony and dining area. My room had a daybed and a TV with satellite channels. The modern bathrooms feature all of the standard fittings and are immaculate . Some rooms offer a private plunge pool. (Not at this price, naturally)

Guests are welcome to kayak, swim in the resort’s outdoor pool, or go on a firefly tou r. The resort also has a fairly limited souvenir shop offering personalized gifts.

Thai specialties can be enjoyed onboard the Dinner Boat Cruise. Located by the river, The Cinnamon serves both local delights and international dishes. A variety of cold beverages are offered at the resort’s three bars. All this for only THB1518 (for two guests.)

Want a great night’s sleep ? This property is highly rated for its extremely comfy beds , and the service is sublime . Talk about being treated like royalty …

Aana is just one of a great many wonderful places to spend a week or two on Koh Chang, but if you’re on a tight budget or plan to spend most days on the beach or away from the hotel, there are a vast number of inexpensive options, and for THB300-400 you will not be living in a hovel . Take Paradise Bungalows near Kai Bae Beach, for example:

To the east of the Gulf of Siam, and just a five-minute brisk walk from Kai Bae Beach and a ten-minute drive from White Sand Beach, Paradise is well-named . Set amid coco-palm trees, the bungalows at Paradise offer a private terrace with enticing views of the ocean. Each room has an en-suite bathroom/shower with piping hot water. Some bungalows provide air conditioning at a slightly elevated tariff.

Guests can take fishing or snorkeling trips, and the staff is well equipped to assist with sightseeing and other arrangements. Paradise’s tiny bar serves light snacks and drinks, and there are local restaurants and bigger bars that are a ten-minute (sober) walk from the resort. All for THB370 for two guests.

You get the entire bungalow with a balcony and garden view, and there is a flat-screen TV with cable and satellite channels, and as is now the norm, free WiFi. Floors are hardwood or parquet, and towels and linen are all included , as is a mosquito net.

Rooms are basic but spotless and perfect at the price .

Paradise is just one example – there are scores of others that are just as well-priced and attractive to stay in.

A budget week from Bangkok to Koh Chang (return trip) will cost you around THB6550 , excluding gifts, souvenirs, etc. This is pretty frugal but certainly achievable.

The same week with a relaxing of the purse strings will set you back in the region of THB19500.

Is Koh Chang Expensive? Definitely not…

Nieuw in Koh Chang?

Than Mayom Waterfall in Koh Chang

Mu Koh Chang National Park

Ziplining in Koh Chang

Jungle Hike in Koh Chang

Fireflies in Koh Chang, Thailand

Collecting Trash at Beach

Kai Bae view point in Koh Chang

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Take in the sunset views and relaxed atmosphere, and wind down as the day draws to a close. The session provides yoga mats. It’s a good idea to bring mosquito repellent and a bottle of water.
