2014 Dodge Journey review: Our expert's take

What is the 2014 dodge journey.

The 2014 Dodge Journey is a mid-size SUV that competes with the Ford Edge , Honda Pilot , Honda CR-V , Toyota RAV4  and Toyota Highlander . It seats up to seven and comes in SE, SXT, Crossroad, Limited and R/T trim levels, all of which are available in front- or all-wheel drive.

What's New on the 2014 Dodge Journey?

The 2014 Dodge Journey Limited replaces the previous Crew trim, and satellite radio is now available in all trim levels.

How Does the 2014 Dodge Journey Compare to other Mid-Size SUVs?

The Dodge Journey has similar features to the mid-size Toyota Highlander at a lower starting price, and it also costs less than the compact RAV4, CR-V and Escape. The seating position is lower, and handling is less SUV-like than that of the Ford Edge. A standard four-speed transmission results in poor fuel economy compared with its competition, and legroom is narrower as well.

What Features in the 2014 Dodge Journey Are Most Important?

Standard performance features include a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, a four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The four-cylinder engine supplies 1,000 pounds of towing capacity. Opt for the available 283-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 engine and the towing capacity increases to 2,500 pounds. It's paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive.

Significant standard features include a crosshair grille, flared fenders, power heated side mirrors, 17-inch wheels, fabric-covered seats, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, manual air conditioning, second-row floor bins, a 4.3-inch touchscreen stereo, an MP3 jack and a USB port.

Available features include LED taillights, fog lights, dual exhaust tips, 19-inch aluminum wheels, roof rails, a power moonroof, leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, built-in second-row booster seats, an 8.4-inch touchscreen system, Infinity premium stereo, automatic air conditioning and a storage compartment inside front passenger seat.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes, side curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, side-impact airbags for the front seats, front active head restraints and an electronic stability system with electronic roll mitigation and trailer-sway control. A backup camera and rear parking sensors are available.

Should I Buy the 2014 Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey is worth your money if you value a smooth ride, great maneuverability and less body roll than other SUVs. Inside the vehicle, the available 8.4-inch touchscreen is easy to use. However, the six-speed automatic transmission included with the V-6 engine can downshift abruptly, the brakes tend to be mushy and unresponsive and the dashboard buttons aren't as classy as the rest of the interior.

Love my dodge journey crossroad.

Bought new 2014 and have lifetime warranty that only costs me $100.00 to fix it. I have already paid for the warranty and more. Knock on wood. Only 80,000 miles on it and looks great!

Beware of the head gasket!!!

We bought our 2014 Journey used in 2016 and had it for nine years. The driveability is great, very comfortable. The ergonomics of the seats and the interior are really nice. Roomy rear cargo with fold down seats was useful. It has decent power and overall we were happy with it...until....We had the dreaded head gasket leak and are told by the dealership that this tends to happen on these cars at age 9 or so. Now we are told that it would cost over 2K to fix it and it would likely have a crack in the engine which would require another 9K to replace the motor. For this reason Journey.... Yer fired!

Love my 2014 Journey Limited

I brought my 2014 Dodge Journey limited 2 years ago, absolutely love it. I take it in for regular maintenance and everything runs great. It is speedy and feels like you are floating down the interstate. Love the 2 row seating, the back row that folds down and the HUGE trunk area. There is also soo much storage in this thing. Only issues I have had with it is my rear tow just went out and I have a small exhaust leak. But I will not trade this thing in until she dies. This is the best car I have owned. Heated steering wheel and seats, outlets in back, power seats, rearview backup camera and the sunroof are all awesome. For the price you pay you really get more than what you think. Put new tires, rims, brakes and rotors and now it looks even better. So happy with it

2014 dodge journey sxt 3.6l v6

  • The Crossroad builds on the well-equipped success of the mid-level Journey SXT Plus, and includes Chrysler's excellent 8.4-inch UConnect infotainment system with Bluetooth and satellite radio, as well as dual-zone climate control.
  • While the Crossroad doesn't add any new tech to the package, it butches up the looks of the mostly inconspicuous Journey body with off-road-inspired front and rear fascias that give the model more of a crossover look (the standard model can still look a lot like a minivan or wagon). That newfound attitude is furthered by the inclusion of 19-inch black-finish five-spoke wheels, dark chrome grille surrounds, smoked taillights and black headlight housings.
  • The Crossroad's cabin includes leather seats with "sport mesh" inserts, while liquid graphite trim pieces add some flash to the plasticky cabin. While they're largely from the Chrysler parts bin, the addition of a leather-wrapped wheel and gearshift knob (both part of the Crossroad trim) help elevate the cabin to a somewhat more premium feel.
  • Dodge offers a prehistoric 2.4-liter engine and four-speed automatic on the Journey, but we feel confident in saying you really don't want this. Instead, upgrade to the aforementioned 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 ($1,700 on the front-wheel-drive model, or $3,400 for the all-wheel-drive six-cylinder). This V6 sings to the tune of 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, which is plenty of grunt for the 4,238-pounder. Adding the Pentastar also adds a six-speed automatic. The downside of this package, though, is that you'll be netting mediocre fuel economy – the best the Pentastar/AWD Journey can hope for is a dismal 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 on the highway.
  • We shouldn't be surprised, but the Pentastar/6AT combination is still very good to drive several years after its debut. Power is abundant, and the V6's revvy nature makes it a surprising bit of fun. It sounds quite nice, too. The six-speed is quick on upshifts, although we found the Crossroad's unit to be slower than we remember on downshifts.
  • The ride isn't too objectionable. Secondary impacts (body shuddering and whatnot) can be present, but they only really popped up on some of the worst roads we came across. On smoother thoroughfares, there is nothing terribly offensive about the ride, aside from a excess of vertical movement, and the addition of 19-inch wheels has done surprisingly little to hurt the ride much, either.
  • The Journey's driving environment is a fairly typical one for the CUV market. The driver rides high, and the range of adjustment on the six-way power driver's seat is just fine. The seats themselves aren't heavily bolstered (a plus for easy ingress/egress), but we still think they'd be quite comfortable for long hauls.
  • Of course, the folks who buy the Journey aren't likely to be too interested in dynamic driving impressions. As a family vehicle, there's little reason to think that the Crossroad wouldn't make a suitable companion for those who need two rows everyday, but who appreciate the additional utility provided by an extra pair of seats. Space in the second row is certainly manageable for the longer-legged, although not surprisingly, the optional third row is somewhat cramped. Opting for the third row, though, does add a tilt/slide function to the second row and a recline function to the third, both of which are rather nice.
  • The third row does, however, have a big impact on cargo volume, as it shrinks from 37 cubic feet to just 10.7 cu ft when the back seats aren't stowed.
  • Prices for the Journey Crossroad start at a very reasonable $24,995 for a front-drive model, although the sticker will read at least $28,395 if you want something like our all-wheel-drive, V6-powered tester. From there, things can increase quickly. There are eight different optional packages that add everything from the aforementioned third-row seats, to a backup camera, upgraded stereo and heated seats. In our case, we had all of that, and then some.
  • With an as-tested price of $32,315, our Journey included a sunroof ($1,095), upgraded 368-watt, six-speaker stereo ($395), a navigation and backup camera pack ($995), a Popular Equipment package (heated seats and steering wheel, plus automatic headlamps for $995), a rear-seat entertainment system ($1,195) and the optional third-row seats, which added a tilt and sliding function for the second row ($1,500). As we mentioned earlier, we'd strongly recommend opting for the $3,400 AWD/Pentastar combo.

Chrysler 3.6L V6 Pentastar Engine Specs, Problems & Reliability

2014 dodge journey sxt 3.6l v6

Chrysler 3.6 Pentastar Info

The 3.6L V6 Pentastar is a 3.6-liter six-cylinder gasoline engine introduced first at the New York Auto Show in 2009 for the 2011 model-year Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles. This new V6 is one of the most technologically advanced engines to date, created by Chrysler. This V6 is used in popular vehicles around the world such as the Dodge Challenger, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, and Ram 1500. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 for three years in a row was among the top ten engines in the US market. Let's take an in-depth look at the 3.6 Pentastar engine design, its common problems, reliability, and longevity.

3.6L Pentastar Engine Overview

The new 3.6 V6 engine is 38% more powerful, consumes 11% less fuel, and 42 lbs (19 kg) lighter than its 3.5-liter predecessor. It is also smaller in size: 94 mm shorter than the 3.7 and 34 mm than the 3.5 V6. The engine has a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block with a 60-degree V angle between cylinder banks. It has an open-deck design that saves material, lighter and cheaper to produce, and has cast iron cylinder liners for increasing longevity. The engine block is equipped with three piston oil cooler jets. Each oil jet cools two pistons, preventing detonations by managing heat. There are forged steel connecting rods, the nodular iron crankshaft, and cast aluminum pistons with low-friction rings and reduced skirt area for less weight and friction. The engine uses a chain-driven, vane-type variable displacement oil pump. Engineers removed all brackets for the engine accessories. The alternator, air conditioner compressor, and belt tensioner are bolted to the engine block. They are driven by a serpentine belt as well. This arrangement has significantly reduced the level of vibration and noise.

The 3.6L Pentastar has sand-cast aluminum cylinder heads made of T7 heat-treated aluminum. The cylinder head features 4-valve per cylinder and dual overhead camshafts with roller finger followers with hydraulic lifters. The intake and exhaust camshafts are chain-driven (there is a separate timing chain for each head). Timing chains are a "silent chain link" design. All four camshafts come with torque-actuated phasers. The intake valve has a single-piece design and is made of forged heat-resistant (martensitic) steel; the intake valve diameter is 39 mm. The exhaust valves have a two-piece design, with a forged austenitic head welded to a martensitic stem. The exhaust valve diameter is 30 mm. Cylinder heads feature high-flow intake and exhaust ports and an integrated exhaust manifold. On top of the engine, there is a lightweight composite intake manifold fitted with a 74 mm throttle body and an electronically controlled multipoint port fuel injection system.

90% of maximum torque is achieved in the range of 1800-6350 rpm. Thus, the engine can provide excellent driving dynamics without requiring high-octane (premium gasoline). While Pentastar engines are not demanding on fuel quality and sufficiently simple to maintain, they feature exceptional fuel efficiency, low emissions, and smooth operation. Pentastar V6 engines are popular both in the United States and beyond. They meet Federal Tier 2 BIN 5 emission requirements, Ultra-low Emissions Vehicle II standards, and Euro6 standards. It is also designed to meet stringent future standards, including LEV III and PZEV California standards.

2016+ Pentastar Engines

In 2016, FCA released an upgraded Pentastar engine family and a new version of the 3.6L V6 for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. The revised engine now has a two-stage variable valve lift (VVL). The VVL system provides low and high valve lifts. Low-lift settings at low speeds save fuel (up to a 2.7% increase over the previous version), while high valve lift turns on when power is needed. Unfortunately, the manufacturer was forced to install a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The modified engine also features a new plastic intake manifold with longer runners, increased torque, high-tumble intake ports inside cylinder heads, new valve springs, and low-tension piston rings. The fuel system received new eight-hole injectors. And the good news is, the engine has kept a port fuel injection. The variable valve timing (VVT) system was recalibrated. The compression ratio was increased from 10.2:1 to 11.3:1. These improvements help to produce more power and torque together with better fuel efficiency and emissions.

In recent years, the Pentastar V6 engine successfully competes with the more technologically advanced 2.0L turbo four - 2.0-liter Turbo Hurricane .

Engine Specs

3.6 v6 pentastar common problems and reliability.

Is the 3.6 Pentastar a good, reliable engine? Well, this 3.6-liter V6 has been around for a long time (almost 11 years), and for a good reason. The 3.6 Pentastar has high power for the V6 NA engine and is efficient and reliable. However, owners of these engines may face some common problems. Let's take a look at these issues in this article below.

The Most Comon 3.6L Pentastar Problems

Here is the list of the most common Dodge/Jeep 3.6L V6 Pentastar engine problems:

  • Cylinder head failure
  • Rocker arms problem
  • Cooling and oiling issues

Pentastar 3.6 Cylinder Head Failure

The left side cylinder head problem had been found in about 0.5% percent of 2011-13 vehicles with 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar engines. Engines with cylinder head failure can be easily recognized by a ticking sound from the left side. Sometimes they had other symptoms, including a check engine light illuminated, misfires, and power loss. The failure was caused by excessive wear. In August 2012, Chrysler made the design upgrade. Revised heads come with hardened valve guides and seats, and the problem is rarely reported now. All 2011, 2012, and some 2013 model year vehicles with 3.6L Pentastar engines have extended engine warranty on the left side cylinder head to 10 years or 150,000 miles.

Problem with Rocker Arms

Very often, this problem is confused with the one described above. The most common symptoms are very similar - a ticking/tapping sound from the upper engine area and a cylinder misfire. You can also find a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating misfire. To address this issue, the FCA issued a service bulletin in March 2014. However, some newer Pentastar 3.6 engines still experience rocker arm failure, and there are no any additional warranty periods for this problem from the FCA.

Cooling System Issues and Oil Pump Failure

Some owners complain of problems with clogged-up radiators and frequent replacement of water pumps, thermostats, oil cooler, and oil pumps. The problem may lie in the production and preparation of an individual engine before assembly. The heads are sand-cast and undergo serious inspections for cleanliness before reaching assembly plants. But any residual sand that remains from the casting process inside the engine can also circulate through the vehicle's cooling systems, causing clogs in the radiator and oil cooling system. Fortunately, this problem is not as common as the ones listed above, but it is very annoying since many stories on the internet from owners who went through these same repairs multiple times.

3.6L V6 Pentastar Reliability Summary

So, is the 3.6L Pentastar engine reliable? Summing up, we can say the Pentastar 3.6 reliability is way above average. It is time-tested well enough, and over 10 million Pentastar engines were produced to date. Despite that they had some issues early on, the 3.6L V6 Pentastar is great, durable, one of the most reliable engines available on the market right now. With proper maintenance, the 3.6 Pentastar engine longevity is around 250-300k miles (there are even a few cases of the Pentastar last up to impressive 500,000 miles).

2014 Dodge Journey Performance Review

Critics say that buyers should skip the 2014 Dodge Journey's underpowered four-cylinder engine and go for the V6 option, which they say delivers ample power in most situations. Both models receive subpar fuel economy estimates, but the V6-powered Journey’s numbers are only slightly less than those of the four-cylinder model. Most auto reviewers say the 2014 Dodge Journey has adequate handling around corners, but that it doesn't quite live up to the sporty driving dynamics of some rivals.

  • Performance 6.8

2014 Journey Photos

2014 Dodge Journey Angular Front

  • "If you want to spruce up the Journey's performance, the R/T model's more responsive suspension and powerful standard V6 make shuttling the kids to school quite enjoyable." -- AutoTrader
  • "Accordingly, we'd avoid the four-cylinder entirely and step up to the 3.6-liter V6, which feels potent in any situation. Unfortunately, fuel economy is still below average, and the six-speed automatic transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift is needed." -- Edmunds
  • "Although the 2013 Dodge Journey might look as though it would ride and handle like a tall SUV, the feeling we experienced seemed more in keeping with a well-mannered wagon." -- Kelley Blue Book (2013)

Acceleration and Power

The 2014 Dodge Journey comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and a four-speed automatic transmission. A 3.6-liter V6 engine that puts out 283 horsepower and a six-speed automatic transmission are available on upper trims. The base Journey trails the class in fuel efficiency with an estimated 19/26 mpg city/highway. Rivals like the Nissan Rogue and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport earn significantly better numbers.

The four-cylinder Dodge Journey receives criticism from automotive journalists who say its acceleration is dull. Test drivers say that buyers should opt for the V6 engine, which has plenty of power for typical driving conditions. Reviewers note that the V6 Journey doesn't sacrifice much fuel efficiency for its more potent performance. The front-wheel drive V6 model gets 17/25 mpg city/highway, which is still poor for the class, but only slightly less than the four-cylinder Journey's estimates.

  • "A lackluster four-cylinder engine is by far the weakest link on the 2014 Dodge Journey. Not only is acceleration sluggish on this version, fuel economy is well below average for this class mainly due to Dodge's continued use of an outdated four-speed automatic transmission." -- Edmunds
  • "Most buyers will want to skip the anemic four and opt for the strong 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, which serves up 283-horsepower and 260 lb-ft. Mated to a six-speed automatic, the Pentastar returns almost the same mileage as the smaller mill - 17/25 mpg - in front-wheel-drive form, while an optional all-wheel-drive system lowers efficiency to 16/24 mpg." -- Left Lane News
  • "A big plus is the Journey's optional 3.6-liter V6 engine, which is one of the best on the market and delivers generous power with smooth operation and noteworthy fuel economy." -- Kelley Blue Book

Handling and Braking

Some reviewers say that the 2014 Dodge Journey has a soft, car-like ride, and that it cruises over uneven pavement and rugged roads with ease. However, others write that while the Dodge Journey's handling is adequate, buyers should consider compact SUVs like the Mazda CX-5 for sportier handling.

  • "The Journey's high driving position and angled steering column may bring school buses to mind. Fortunately, the Journey's dynamics are much better, as this car-based crossover has no trouble navigating rutted roads and tight streets. Underneath, the Journey is related to the Dodge Avenger sedan, and it shares that car's soft, quiet ride on the highway." -- AutoTrader
  • "On the move, the Journey is competent for the class, with a smooth ride and secure handling. That said, we'd steer you toward a CR-V, Santa Fe or Sorento if ride comfort is your priority, while the Mazda 5, CX-5 or Escape would get our vote if you're looking for a utility vehicle with a sportier handling feel." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2014 Dodge Journey certainly looks like an upright SUV, but the first time behind the wheel will prove it drives like a very competent car. The suspension has the compliance to deal with all sorts of bumps and bad pavement yet, on those curving mountain roads or even just freeway onramps, it has a level of firmness and control that keeps the Journey cornering securely and with a minimum of bobbing and weaving." -- Kelley Blue Book

Four Common Problems With the 3.6L Pentastar V6 Engines that We Can Repair

2014 dodge journey sxt 3.6l v6

The 3.6 L FCA  Pentastar  V6 Engine is an overwhelmingly durable and reliable engine. That’s why it’s been used in in more than ten million Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles since 2010. With proper maintenance the 3.6L Pentastar engine can provide years of reliable service. However, no product is perfect, and the 3.6-liter Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s (FCA) Pentastar V6 engine is no exception. Unfortunately, problems with this type of engine can be challenging to diagnose, unless you take it to a shop that is highly experienced with these types of engines. At  Nerger’s Auto Express , we’ve repaired countless 3.6L FCA engines in vehicles ranging from Jeep Wranglers to Dodge Chargers, and our experience means that we can diagnose and repair common and complicated engine problems quickly.

Here’s a look at four common problems that we frequently repair with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine.

  • Pentastar V6 Engine Problem:  Misfire/Check Engine Light

If your car misfires, the check engine light will also come on, and the most common cause of a misfire or check engine light is a cylinder head failure. A cylinder head failure is caused by valve seats on cylinder #2 overheating. This is particularly common in Jeep Wranglers. However, depending upon your vehicle’s year and mileage, this problem is potentially covered under an extended warranty.

  • Pentastar 3.6L Engine Problem:  Ticking Sound in the Engine

If you hear a ticking sound in your Chrysler, Jeep, or Dodge, it’s often a symptom of a 3.6 Pentastar rocker arm failure, also known as a cam follower failure. Although the cost of the parts isn’t too steep, this problem requires a highly experienced auto technician to repair, so the labor costs can drive the price up.

  • 3.6L Pentastar Engine Problem: Overheating

If your engine is overheating, or if you’re having problems with coolant leaks, heating problems, or a/c problems it’s possible you have a cooling system failure. This is due to a water pump or radiator problem that is preventing the coolant from properly flowing through the engine the way it should. In some cases, this may also prompt a check engine light, or a default code, depending on your vehicle.

  • 3.6L FCA Pentastar V6 Engine Problem: Tapping, Knocking, Rattling

Tapping, knocking or rattling in your 3.6 Pentastar engine may be a symptom of an oil pump failure. However, before you panic, these noises may not indicate a complete failure, but instead are warning you of a drop in oil pressure. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but it is often due to sand deposits left behind in a cylinder head. Our expert technicians at Nerger’s Auto Express will be able to quickly diagnose and repair problems with your oil pump.

transmission fluid

This video shows you how to add transmission fluid to your 2014 Dodge Journey. Before contemplating a transmission fluid change and searching for the transmission fluid change cost on a Journey, see if you need to add transmission fluid. How to add transmission fluid? First, make sure that your engine was running when you checked the fluid level. If the transmission fluid level on your Journey is low, you need to add fluid through the dipstick tube or the check plug. Dodge has developed sophisticated transmissions through the years and it is critical that you add the exact type of transmission fluid stipulated by your owner's manual (typically in the back of the manual in a section titled Fluid Capacities.) The manual will likely call for a specific type of Dodge transmission fluid. It may state a type such as Dexron, Mercon, Allison, Type-F or CVT transmission fluid. If you are going to use a different brand of fluid such as Valvoline transmission fluid, be sure it matches the type specified in the owners manual. When adding transmission fluid to your Journey, be sure to add it slowly as the transmission fluid capacity is reached quickly and it can be difficult to remove excess fluid if you overfill.

When to add transmission fluid to a Journey? If you are having problems with the transmission in your Journey, such as clunky shifting or hesitation, check the transmission fluid level first - it is amazing how many drivers pay thousands of dollars for transmission work when a half quart of transmission fluid would have fixed the problem.

Full Edmunds Review: 2013 Dodge Journey SUV

For 2013, the Dodge Journey Crew trim boasts a stronger value proposition, as Dodge has added a few more standard features (such as leather upholstery and heated front seats) and reduced its price.

Edmunds says

Though not an obvious choice, the 2013 Dodge Journey has many positive attributes to make it worthy of consideration.

Vehicle overview

When it debuted four years ago, the Dodge Journey crossover didn't have much in its favor. We used the comment "Needs Improvement" so frequently on its report card that we were certain its fate as a back-of-the-class entry was sealed. Yet two years later it was more like "Most Improved" as the Journey underwent a complete under-the-skin makeover that put it on the honor roll. Yes, the 2013 Dodge Journey may look the same as that original '09, but they're as different as a scholar-athlete is from the class clown.

Always in its favor has been the Journey's interior versatility. Roomier than your typical compact crossover SUV, the more wagon-like Journey offers a small third-row seat that can accommodate a couple of small kids. That added flexibility, along with its reasonable dimensions, makes the Journey the just-right choice for an ideal family vehicle without the added cost, fuel appetite and parking hassles of the larger three-row crossovers.

Under the hood, it's a tale of two engines -- one desirable and one not. The base four-cylinder is underpowered and its fuel economy isn't that great. The 3.6-liter V6, on the other hand, is one of the most potent engines in this segment, yet it still provides decent fuel economy. Underway, the Journey boasts composed handling and a supple ride, while inside is a stylish cabin fitted with high-quality materials and stocked with user-friendly high-tech features. Other attributes include hidden storage compartments and optional integrated child seats.

Thanks to its well-rounded nature, the 2013 Dodge Journey earns our approval. Of course, there are other impressive choices available as well. We also like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento ; both boast a small but usable third-row seat, better four-cylinder performance and available V6 engines. If a third row isn't a priority, models like the Ford Escape or Honda CR-V are also excellent. But overall the Journey is a respectable pick for a small crossover, particularly with the optional V6.

2013 Dodge Journey models

The 2013 Dodge Journey is available in five- and seven-passenger configurations. It is available in American Value Package (AVP), SE, SXT, R/T and Crew trim levels.

The American Value Package comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, dual-zone manual climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining second-row seat and a six-speaker sound system with a compact touchscreen interface, a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.

The SE adds privacy tinted glass, side roof rails and LED taillights.

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, unique front/rear fascias, a cargo cover/net and satellite radio. A premium sound system, sunroof and 19-inch wheels are optional.

The Crew adds a V6 engine, remote start, 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a six-way power driver seat (with four-way lumbar adjustment), dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 115-volt power outlet, a premium audio system, Bluetooth and a fold-flat front passenger seat (with hidden storage bin).

The R/T includes all the Crew features (minus the roof rails) and adds a monochrome exterior treatment, special 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and black perforated-leather upholstery with red stitching.

Some of the higher trim's features are available on the lower trims via option packages, while other available features (depending on trim) include rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a folding/reclining third-row seat, three-zone automatic climate control (with rear air-conditioning), integrated second-row child booster seats, a rear seat entertainment system and a navigation system with an 8.4-inch display.

2014 dodge journey sxt 3.6l v6

Performance & mpg

The 2013 Dodge Journey AVP, SE and SXT are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. Its EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined – not great given its anemic acceleration and thriftier competitors.

Optional on the SXT and standard on the Crew and R/T is a 3.6-liter V6. It's good for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft and is matched to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. At the track we recorded a 7.5-second 0-60-mph time for a Journey V6 FWD, an average time for the class. Fuel economy stands at 17/25/20 with front-wheel drive and 16/24/19 with all-wheel drive; both are a little below average for V6-powered small crossovers.

Every 2013 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats are optional on every Journey. In Edmunds brake testing, a Journey V6 FWD came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average performance for its segment.

In government crash tests, the Journey received four out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars awarded for frontal-impact protection and five stars for side-impact protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Journey received the top score of "Good" in the frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests.

The 2013 Dodge Journey's four-cylinder engine just doesn't have enough power to get this heavy crossover moving. It also doesn't provide enough fuel economy to justify its lackluster performance. As such, we'd avoid it and step up to the 3.6-liter V6. This engine is used throughout the Chrysler/Dodge lineups, and for good reason: It offers smooth, robust power and decent fuel economy. Unfortunately, its six-speed automatic transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift (or two) is needed.

On the move, the Journey is competent for the class, with a smooth ride and secure handling. The latter feels especially confident, boasting precise steering with a light yet still nicely weighted feel to it. That said, a Ford Escape or Honda CR-V likely will feel more agile around town, while the Chevy Equinox provides an even more comfortable and quiet ride on the freeway.

From both design and execution standpoints, the Journey's interior rates as one of the best in the segment. The materials are high in quality, the design is clean and modern and the up-to-the-minute technology is pretty easy to use. We especially like the extra-large touchscreen interface available on most models.

Other strengths for the Journey include its clever storage bins and available integrated child seats that make it decidedly family-friendly. Also helping that cause is a versatile seating arrangement. While the Dodge's sliding and reclining second-row seat is now the norm for this class, its optional third-row seat is not. Like the one in the Toyota RAV4, this seat is far from adult-friendly, but if you need to take a couple extra kids to a T-ball game, it should come in handy.

In terms of hauling cargo, the Journey offers a total capacity of 68 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. That's a few cubes smaller than the RAV4 and CR-V, but bigger than the Chevy Equinox. For smaller items, the Journey provides storage bins hidden under the second-row floor as well as under the passenger seat.
