What You Didn’t Know About The Cars From The Grand Tour: Eurocrash Special

The cars from The Grand Tour: Eurocrash are some of the strangest Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond have ever driven.

The Grand TourThe Grand Tour : Eurocrash is the latest special to come from Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond , and James May. And it is perhaps one of the best they have ever starred in, featuring a fantastic drive from Poland to Slovenia, in some of the most unusual cars they’ve ever driven. A Chevrolet SSR, a Mitsuoka Le-Seyde, and a Crossley CC Convertible. The brief was to get the three most inappropriate long-distance cars, and they certainly did that.

Despite the problems that May suffered with his Crosley being too slow, and his driving experience in the “Titties and Beer” hotrod, all three cars made it to the end of the trip. Showcasing just how good a drive through Central Europe can be.

Clarkson’s Mitsuoka Was The Ugliest Car On The Eurocrash Special

Mitsuoka le-seyde engine specs.

The Mitsuoka Le-Seyde that Clarkson chose for the special was perhaps the ugliest of the three cars the presenters had. The fact it even exists is a remarkable fact, but exist it does and amazingly 500 units were sold. As Hammond remarks in the special, it “is too many.” But Mitsuoka, a company renowned for ugly cars , claimed that they were all sold four days after they went on sale. The car uses a Nissan Silvia S13 from the 1990s as its basis. Then transforms it with an all-new body design that harks back to cars from the early 20th century.

Specifically, the Le-Seyde looks like the Zimmer Golden Spirit, which wasn’t built in the 1930s but in the 1980s along with other Zimmer models . Clarkson on the special however mentions that the Le-Seyde was meant to look like the Mercedes SSK. There are one or two minor similarities, but for the most part the two cars look nothing alike. While the hilarious exterior might look like something from the 1930s, the interior is anything but that. Mitsuoka did pretty much nothing to the original Nissan interior. The Le-Seyde looks the same inside as the Silvia S13 did, and in fact, the center portion of the car is still Nissan.

Under the hood the Le-Seyde still uses the same engine that the Silvia S13 did. This was a 1.8-liter CA18DE engine, used in the Nissan up until mid-1990. Remarkably, two more versions of the Le-Seyde were actually built. There was the Dore, introduced in July 1991, a convertible version based on the 1979-1993 Ford Mustang Fox Body. It also used the Windsor 4.9-liter 302 ci V8 engine that the Mustang did. A redesigned Le-Seyde, simply called New Le-Seyde was introduced in late 2000, and this time it was based on the Nissan Silvia S15. Not that you’d notice any differences between the old and new Le-Seyde as they were nearly identical .

Hammond Brought The Heavy Chevrolet SSR To The Party

Hammond’s vehicle for the special made a little more sense than Clarkson’s, but still fit the ethos of the special nicely. His vehicle was a Chevrolet SSR, the retro-styled two-door convertible pickup truck. A great idea that Chevrolet would perhaps rather forget than remember. The styling was certainly quirky, and a 5.3-liter 300 hp Vortec V8 under the hood promised plenty of power for what was quite a small truck. Chevrolet upgraded the engine to a 390 hp LS2 V8 in 2005.

However, the good vibes were not there to stay. The proportions of the finished SSR were somewhat awkward , and it wasn’t a thin pickup truck by any means. The V8 was powerful, but a 0-60 mph time of 7.7 seconds was never going to set the world on fire. While it wasn’t a great sports car, it was also a terrible pickup truck as the ‘bed’ was effectively only there to store the folded-down roof from the truck. The reality was it wasn’t anywhere near as practical as a regular pickup truck.

Perhaps the biggest problem however for the lumbering SSR was the weight of the truck. The SSR, with all the bodywork and big V8 motor under the hood, came in at 4,700 lbs. Or just over 2 tonnes. The weight of the vehicle was a topic of conversation between Clarkson and Hammond on Eurocrash, as they awaited the rival of May and his Crosley. Chevrolet then priced the SSR at a spectacular $42,000 which rose up another $1,000 in 2005. As such, very few people ever drove the SSR as Hammond joked in the special, and with extra options the price could be pushed up to $50,000.

May’s Crosley Was The Worst Car On The Eurocrash Special

May however surely wins the award for the worst car on the special. He chose a 1947 Crosley CC Convertible, a model that was actually one of the first mass-produced slab-sided cars in history. Under the hood of his CC was a 700cc engine, limiting May’s top speed on highways to around 40 mph. Crosley was the brainchild of Powel Crosley Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio. He believed that cars had become too big and cumbersome , even as early as the 1940s, which was incredibly forward-thinking.

He set up Crosley in 1939, and it lasted until 1952. Developing a variety of microcars aimed at creating affordable, mass-market cars that could navigate roads easier than their larger counterparts. There was a huge array of vehicles offered, ranging from sedans, to pickups, convertibles, and even a sports car. But the most popular version of the Crosley’s were the station wagons, produced by the company from 1947 to their demise in 1952. In the special, May’s gave him all sorts of problems. Apart from being too slow even for Captain Slow , the Crosley kept cutting out on him as well as overheating.

May had a rather unfortunate mishap at the start of the special , driving into a barrier as they left the port in Poland they started from. A little later in the special, May decided to drive the backup car on the special just to keep up with the other two presenters, but he hated that even more than his Crosley. Having sent the backup hotrod down a ski slope, May was almost relieved to be able to finish the trip in the Crosley. It is safe to say that the presenters certainly chose three interesting cars for the adventure.

RELATED: Hemmings Find: 1951 Crosley Kiddie Fire Truck Amusement Park Ride

The Backup Car Was Worse Than May’s Crosley

With its terrible slogan on the side, the backup car for the trip was a makeshift hotrod. A Jaguar engine was under the hood, as well as a tiny steering wheel and a horrible accelerator pedal. It was even worse to drive than the Crosley, so chucking it down the ski slope was perhaps the best thing for it . It took Nigel Mansell’s slightly melted wax figure with it, in one of the funniest scenes of the entire special. Eurocrash has to be one of the best specials the trio has ever appeared in, and we can’t wait for their next adventure.

The Grand Tour: Eurocrash

Jeremy, Richard and James have a problem. Every country they want to visit is either a trouble hotspot, or has banned them from entering. So instead, they head to Central Europe, on a road trip nobody has ever thought of, in cars nobody would ever dream of using. This epic 1400-mile journey, in an outrageous Japanese Al Capone gangster car, a pickup that thinks it’s a convertible, and G 75 year old American micro mini, takes them from Gdańsk in Poland through Slovakia, Hungary, on to their final destination of the stunning Lake Bled in Slovenia. In Poland they cause havoc at a spectacular motor race featuring Soviet made Formula 1 cars, before heading to the actual prison camp where the Great Escape took place. In Kraków they recruit, a famous Formula 1 world champion to the team, before heading to Slovakia to sample a stunning Eastern European hypercar, a hidden racing Škoda classic, and the world’s most advanced flying car.

With James as broken as the car he’s driving, the trio plus their new recruit head into Hungary, where for their troubles, they end up in a time loop and have to run the gauntlet of the world’s deadliest archers.

The team then make a dash for the finish line, which involves yet more peril in a spectacular Fast and Furious finale at a military airbase.

Why does James’s car keep moving itself as if by magic? Why does Richard’s car keep telling him he’s terrible in bed? Why does Jeremy’s car keep spouting chandeliers? Watch and learn, on the Grand Tour Road Trip that nobody has ever thought of doing….

The Grand Tour: Eurocrash Review – the Top Gear trio tackle Central Europe

Prime Video series The Grand Tour: Eurocrash (Season 5, Episode 2) Review

Here is our review of the Prime Video series The Grand Tour: Eurocrash (Season 5, Episode 2), which does not contain spoilers.

Controversy be damned, Jeremy Clarkson is back on our screens once again whether you like it or not, returning for yet another instalment of the motoring reality TV series The Grand Tour .

Although this may be one of the last episodes from the series as Prime Video looks to cut ties with the controversial journalist. Current affairs aside though, this is another highly entertaining, yet standard offering from the Top Gear trio as they travel through Central Europe in weird, comical cars.

The Grand Tour: Eurocrash Review

The fifth season of The Grand Tour continues with its second stand-alone special, after 2022’s A Scandi Flick . In the latest episode, Richard Hammond , Jeremy Clarkson, and James May take part in a road trip that no one has ever thought of doing before.

Travelling from Gdansk, Poland, through the countries of Slovakia and Hungary, before ending in Slovenia, where they’ll conclude at the scenic Lake Bled.

This unconventional road trip is then made all the more hilarious with the addition of those aforementioned ‘weird’ cars. Richard Hammond is first on the scene, driving a yellow convertible pick-up truck for the entirety of the 1400-mile journey.

Whilst Jeremy Clarkson can be found in a hideous, limited-edition Japanese gangster car, which looks like something Cruella de Vil would drive. And James May is there, bringing up the rear in a 75-year-old micro mini that is four feet wide and struggles to reach its top speed of 40 mph. This of course becomes a clear hazard on the European motorways.

As the they travel through Central Europe, the presenters enjoy some gorgeous sight-seeing diversions, they take in the history and the culture of each individual nation, whilst performing elaborate practical jokes on one another, as you’d expect.

There’s room for some car analysis as well in between all the pranks, with the trio using their standard sarcastic wit to inform viewers of their peculiar cars and the many other vehicles specific to those four countries.

This is all topped off with some action-packed races and a truly captivating grand finale.

Is The Grand Tour: Eurocrash good or bad?

Eurocrash is a lot of fun. The trio get up to their usual scripted shenanigans, deploying their trademark irreverent humor wherever they go, as they plough their way through Europe. It’s painfully staged at times, but the old formula still works an absolute treat anyway. This special is sure to put a smile on your face at some point during its feature-length run time.

There’s nothing new or original to the latest instalment, yet the trio are comforting and consistent nonetheless. Fans of the series and the trio’s previous work will not be disappointed.

This is an entertaining road trip, including rebellious, silly comedy, detailed car analysis, and a cracking soundtrack.

Is The Grand Tour: Eurocrash worth watching?

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson, and James May have been performing these sorts of specials for nearly two decades now and very little has changed with regards to their style or delivery in all that time.

Yet even with such an overwhelming history of content behind them, the tried and tested formula still succeeds. It just feels a little dated now is all.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May drive notoriously ugly cars in new Grand Tour trailer

Clarkson has mitsuoka le-seyde. hammond drives a chevy ssr, and may pilots the crosley..

The Grand Tour Eurocrash Trailer Hosts

The Grand Tour Eurocrash special will take former Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May across former Soviet countries in Central Europe in some absolutely absurd cars. The new trailer offers a great glimpse of the automotive action and antics. The show premieres Friday, June 16.

The theme for the hosts' cars for this special appears to be picking the weirdest vehicle possible. Clarkson has a Mitsuoka Le-Seyde , which is a particularly baroque-looking automobile with underpinnings from an S13 Nissan Silvia. Hammond has a Chevrolet SSR, which is a retro-modern combination of a pickup and a roadster. Finally, May has a Crosely convertible, which he admits he bought while drunk.

Gallery: The Grand Tour: Eurocrash

The Grand Tour: Eurocrash

The stunts this time include driving these vehicles onto a cargo plane while the aircraft is speeding down the runway. They also check out some Soviet-era open-wheel race cars, and Hammond crashes.

The guys also sample some other, odd machines. May drives the Praga Bohema  with a Nissan GT-R-derived twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 making around 700 bhp. Clarkson gets behind the wheel of the little Skoda 1100 OHC sports car that weighs a mere 550 kilograms (1,212 pounds), and only two of them still exist. We also see the Klein Vision AirCar deploy its wings and take flight.

A few stunts are also on display in the trailer. The hosts drive through an off-road course while horseback-mounted archers shoot arrows at their vehicles. In addition, a car goes down what appears to be a ski jumping hill. Plus, a bunch of guys carry away May's Crosely.

If You Missed Them, Here Are Earlier The Grand Tour Specials:

grand tour scandi flick rallying episode

The lone bit of non-automotive action involves the guys stealing a wax statue of Nigel Mansel. Although, the figure barely resembles the 1992 Formula One driver's champion.

The Grand Tour allegedly ends in late 2024 because the show's distributor Amazon no longer wants to work with Clarkson. The massive retailer and streaming company reportedly doesn't plan to commission any more episodes of the show or Clarkson's Farm  beyond what it already has orders for, according to the show business publication Variety . The alleged reason for this decision stems from Clarkson's controversial statements about Meghan Markle in a newspaper column in December 2022. Clarkson apologised for the remarks.

Watch Richard Hammond Crash Another Car In New Grand Tour Trailer

Hammond doesn't suffer serious injuries. the new special premieres june 16..

grand tour crash video

The Grand Tour released an extended clip from the upcoming Eurocrash special that showed Richard Hammond crashing once again. He was racing a Soviet-era open-wheel race car when a part fell off, which led to the engine blowing up. Other than a hurt leg, he was fine. The episode premieres June 16.

Hammond has a successful start by immediately getting ahead of some cars ahead of him. We see him quite the battle with a bright blue car.

Gallery: The Grand Tour: Eurocrash

The Grand Tour: Eurocrash

Then things go wrong. After looking closely at the video, it appears that a bolt and washer fall off from the front of the engine. However, Hammond doesn't notice. Then, oil starts spraying behind him. This makes the track very slippery, causing many of the cars behind Hammond to spin.

The engine goes up in a puff of smoke, presumably from oil starvation. Hammond spins, and then the scene cuts to Jeremy Clarkson and James May hearing about the crash. Maybe in the final version, we actually get to see the impact to get a better idea of what goes wrong.

Then, the jokes start. May outfits his Crosely as an ambulance with an emergency light and stretcher. He drives off to rescue Hammond, but the old car keeps stalling.

It looks like some cinematic magic might be happening. For example, the oil slick is no longer on the track. Also, it's hard to imagine the crew waiting so long to take care of Hammond if he says his leg hurts after a car crash.

Previous Grand Tour Specials:

grand tour scandi flick rallying

Eurocrash has Clarkson, Hammond, and May driving across  former Soviet countries in Central Europe in some very weird cars. Clarkson has a Mitsuoka Le-Seyde. Hammond is behind the wheel of a Chevrolet SSR, and May picks a Crosely convertible.

Those vehicles aren't the only weird machines in the special. An earlier trailer shows May driving a  Praga Bohema supercar . Clarkson barely fits in a Skoda 1100 OHC sports car. The Klein Vision AirCar that combines an aircraft and an automobile also takes flight.

The stunts in the special include driving their cars through an off-road course while horseback-mounted archers shoot arrows at them. The guys also steal a wax statue of 1992 Formula One driver's champion Nigel Mansel.

Hammond has experienced quite a few crashes, some of which have been potentially deadly. He suffered a broken leg and brain injury in his Vampire jet dragster wreck . Another incident resulted in a Rimac Concept One bursting into flames and completely burning up.

The Grand Tour: Eurocrash – Richard Hammond Crashes In Upcoming Episode

In the forthcoming special episode of ‘ The Grand Tour: Eurocrash ‘, Richard Hammond encounters a heart-stopping incident. Filming within the cockpit of a high-speed F1 car, this segment promises a hefty dose of thrill and suspense.

The hosts of the show – Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson , and James May – charted a journey across Europe, spanning 2,000 kilometres. Their expedition, starting in Poland and concluding in Slovenia, takes an exhilarating turn at the Tor Poznań race track in Poznań, Poland.

cars in grand tour euro crash

An amusing exchange ensues between Hammond and Clarkson, wherein Clarkson, struggling to fit into an F1 car, queries Hammond about how to navigate this issue. The answer, delightfully candid and cheeky, suggests Clarkson should “be less fat!”.

For those familiar with the show, Hammond’s reputation precedes him – he has experienced terrifying crashes before on Top Gear and The Grand Tour . The 2006 incident, which put him in a coma, and the severe Rimac crash in 2017 are still fresh in the memories of many viewers. So, to see Hammond settling into the seat of an F1 car in the trailer surely raised quite a few eyebrows.

In the teaser trailer, we witness Hammond take on the race track in the formidable F1 car, before an apparent mishap occurs. While the actual crash is left unseen in the trailer, viewers are left on the edge of their seats, bracing for the inevitable impact.

Adding to the surge of excitement is the official announcement of the air date for this electrifying episode – and it’s closer than fans may have anticipated. Be sure to mark your calendars for 16th June 2023, to witness the high-octane shenanigans of ‘The Grand Tour: Eurocrash’.

Bad weather may have been a factor, authorities said.

MOSCOW -- Russian investigators examining the fiery crash landing of a passenger plane at a Moscow airport that killed 41 people, said on Monday they were focused on pilot error, failings among ground staff, bad weather and technical faults as possible causes.

The Aeroflot flight carrying 78 people was engulfed in flames as it made an emergency landing at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport on Sunday, careening down the runway streaming a huge trail of fire.

Authorities said 37 passengers managed to escape down evacuation slides as the aircraft's rear was entirely consumed. But the other 41 passengers, including at least one child, are now believed dead.

Russia’s transportation minister, Yevgeny Dietrich, told reporters on Monday that 41 bodies have been recovered from the charred wreckage that was still laying on the runway.

The State Department confirmed reports that among the dead was one American. Friends named him as Jeremy Brooks, a 22 year-old from New Mexico. According to his former boss, Ivan Valdez, Brooks had traveled to Russia to take on a job as a fishing guide.

"I think it was more of a state of shock for all of us," Valdez told ABC News. "To us Jeremy was invincible."

Russian investigators on Monday pressed on in trying to establish what caused the crash.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which handles major crimes, said the plane’s flight recorders had been found sent the from analysis.

Russian investigators said they are examining several theories about what led to the disaster, including a mishandling of technical inspections by the ground crew or air traffic controllers, inexperience among the pilots, an aircraft malfunction or poor weather conditions.

The plane, a Russian-built Sukhoi Superjet 100, took off from Moscow bound for the northern city of Murmansk, but had to turn back after running into unspecified "technical difficulties" less than 30 minutes later, with the pilot requesting an emergency landing.

It was not until the plane reached the runway, however, that the fire broke out, the committee said in a statement. CCTV footage broadcast on Russian state television showed the plane's fuselage bouncing off the runaway high into the air before slamming back down, seeming to cause its left engine to explode.

It was unclear what forced the pilots to attempt the emergency landing, but there were a number of reports suggesting the plane ran into bad weather and had been struck by lightning.

A popular Russian social media news messenger, Baza, published an audio interview with who it said was the plane's pilot, Denis Yevdokimov, in which he described losing radio communications and partial autopilot control after being hit by lightning.

"The fire was after landing, as far as I understand. Probably the cause is in that," Yevdokimov said in the audio interview. Yevdokimov did not explain why the plane had landed so hard, saying he had believed it had come in at a usual speed.

The interview could not be authenticated, but a stewardess aboard the flight, Tatiana Kasatkina, also told Russian television the plane had run into hail and lightning. Another passenger, Pyotr Egorov, also said the plane was struck.

"We were flying and lightning struck the plane," Egorov told the tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda. "The plane turned back, there was a hard landing. We almost lost consciousness from fear. The plane jumped off the runway, like a grasshopper."

The plane’s flight attendants have been praised for helping people escape, guiding them to the evacuation slides despite the terrifying scenes. Russian media has hailed Maksim Moiseyev, a 22 year-old flight attendant, after it was reported he died having stayed aboard fighting to open the rear doors of the plane, trying to get more people out.

Questions also quickly focused on the model of the plane. The Sukhoi Superjet 100, the first new Russian passenger jet developed since the Soviet Union, has a troubled history and has struggled to find buyers outside Russia, amid worries about its reliability and safety record.

In 2017, Russia’s aviation authority ordered inspection of all Superjets in the country over problems with the plane’s horizontal stabilizers. Recently, the largest foreign user of the Superjets, Mexico’s Interjet, reportedly sought to return the planes after it had to ground several.

The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal probe into the crash to examine whether there were any safety violations.

Russian investigators continued to examine the wreckage on Monday; a large crane later lifted the broken shell of the plane to allow the runway to reopen.

Sheremetyevo Airport was largely operating as normal Monday, despite the closure of one runway for most of the day. Dozens of flights were delayed or diverted the night before.
