Shore Excursions for Every Traveler - South Island
TranzAlpine, Christchurch - Canterbury
By Tourism New Zealand
Taking a New Zealand and Australia cruise? Then we have got some tips on what you can see and do on land in the South Island.
Whether you are swimming with the world’s smallest dolphin in Akaroa or discovering the Scottish heritage of Dunedin, the South Island offers a vast array of exciting shore excursions for cruise passengers. Enjoy wildlife, history, amazing scenery, coastal walks, train journeys and 4WD adventures; meet the friendly locals and experience our famous kiwi hospitality. Heading ashore on the South Island a must!
From Picton and Marlborough Sounds
- Visit the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in Blenheim, a 25 minute drive from Picton, where the stories of pioneer aviation heroes of WW1 are brought to life.
- A good way to see the Marlborough Sounds is to hire a kayak and get out on the water. For those who want to stay dry, walking or cycling part of the Queen Charlotte Track is a good option. Bikes can be hired from tourism companies in Picton.
- Visitors can take a boat cruise to learn about the Marlborough Sounds and visit a Greenshell Mussell farm. Greenshell Mussels are native to New Zealand and grow well in the sheltered sounds.
- Visit one of Picton’s waterfront cafés or join a wine tour to taste some of the regions world-famous Sauvignon Blanc.
- Picton tourism operator’s offer dolphin cruises and dolphin-swimming experiences.
From Christchurch, Lyttelton and Akaroa
- View penguins, learn about the icy continent, experience 4D Theatre and ride an all-terrain Hagglund Antarctic vehicle at the Antarctic Centre.
- Akaroa mixes French colonial architecture with art galleries and modern cafés. It’s also home to the world’s smallest and rarest species of dolphin – the Hector’s dolphin.
- Jet boat on the Waimakariri River or take a white water rafting trip to the Rangitata River.
- Relax on a small wooden punting boat as an Edwardian punter glides you down the Avon River, past Christchurch’s botanic gardens.
- Take a ride on the iconic TranzAlpine train journey to Arthurs Pass in the stunning Southern Alps.
- The Willowbank Wildlife Reserve houses a variety of New Zealand wildlife, including the kiwi bird. A simulated Māori village provides a unique cultural experience.
From Dunedin and Port Chalmers
- Central Dunedinis a treasure trove of architectural gems. Tours are also available to Larnach Castle, built by a merchant baron in 1871, and historic Olveston House, built between 1904 and 1906.
- Visitors can indulge in tour of the Speights Brewery. Tours include tasting sessions, of course.
- Climb Baldwin Street, the world’s steepest street.
- A trip on the historic Taieri Gorge Railway allows travelers to see the scenic Taieri Gorge. The journey includes refreshments and cruise passengers can board the train at Port Chalmers.
- Dunedin’s Otago Peninsula is home to a colony of yellow-eyed penguins, the world’s only mainland breeding colony of the royal albatross, and other wildlife, including New Zealand fur seals and rare Hooker’s sea lions.
From Fiordland
FiordlandNational Park is the largest National Park in New Zealand and a World Heritage site. It’s a place where jagged peaks rise up from the water’s edge and waterfalls can be seen tumbling hundreds of meters into virgin forest. These scenic riches, combined with an abundance of wildlife such as seals, penguins and dolphins, has made Fiordland one of New Zealand’s most famous destinations.
Milford , Doubtful and Dusky Sound
Most cruise ships visiting Fiordland travel to the fiords of Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound or Dusky Sound allowing passengers to enjoy the varied scenery. Most cruise ship stopovers in Fiordland do not include shore excursions.

Our happy clients
David C | Tripadvisor
The tour company was very flexible as the ship had problems with their tenders. It helped people who were late and gave us extra time in Christchurch. Our driver Scott was very informative about everything we passed on the way there and back as well as about the city and the earthquakes.
Yogesh | Expedia
We landed on shore in Akaroa from the ship by tender. We pre-booked this tour and glad we did as we have great time in this tour and learnt so much about Akaroa and Christchurch in limited time. Very Pleased to say it was well worth the trip and good value for money.
Michael | Google
A very easy way to enjoy the sights of Christchurch and the scenery along the way. Extremely well organised with a set meeting point and a representative there to ensure that boarding the coach went smoothly. Good commentary from the coach driver along the way with enough time to see the city centre and museum.

- New Zealand - Cruise Ports
- Akaroa-Christchurch
The small enchanting settlement of Akaroa is a 90 minute drive from Christchurch and is still a port of call for some ships. Please note that tour places are very limited so you should book your activity as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
A bustling city of 1.4 million people, Auckland offers many things to see and do. Cruise Ships berth in the centre of town so its easy to get around, by foot or taking one of the tourist buses. Join a tour to see more of the area or explore the harbour on one of the many ferries or sailing trips.

Settled in the 1840s by Scottish immigrants, Dunedin retains its Gaelic character, with impressive stone buildings and is home to Otago University. The cruise ships berth at Port Chalmers, a short distance from the city centre. Wildlife sanctuaries on the Otago Peninsula and New Zealands only castle - Larnach Castle - are popular tour destinations.
Gisborne is located at the northern end of Poverty Bay on the east coast of New Zealands North Island. Cliffs at the southern end of the bay were the first part of New Zealand sighted by the crew of Captain Cooks ship Endeavour and were named Young Nicks Head after the crew member who saw them. A memorial to Captain Cook stands on the foreshore, where he stepped ashore in 1769.
Few places in the world can boast of such natural wonders as those offered by land and sea in Kaikoura. The seaside settlement is the most northern district in the Canterbury region located on the east coast of the South Island. Now famous for its whale watching operations.
- Lyttelton-Christchurch
Lyttelton, the oldest settlement on Banks Peninsula has a variety of shops and cafs to discover and is just a 20 minutes drive from Christchurch. On cruise ship days there will be dedicated shuttles from the cruise berth to both Lyttelton and Christchurch. There is no walk off access from the cruise berth.
Famous for its Art Deco architecture, Napier sits at the heart of the Hawkes Bay wine region. Devastated in 1931 by Earthquake and a subsequent fire, the city was rebuilt in the architectural style of the day, Art Deco. Always one of the most popular stops on any cruise, Tauranga has a great climate, golden sand beaches, an extensive harbour and an amazing outdoors lifestyle. Cruise ships berth in Mount Maunganui, a popular beach suburb with shops and cafes only a short walk from the ship. Rotorua and Hobbiton Movie Set are both only an hours drive away!
- Tauranga-Rotorua
Always one of the most popular stops on any cruise, Tauranga has a great climate, golden sand beaches, an extensive harbour and an amazing outdoors lifestyle. Cruise ships berth in Mount Maunganui, a popular beach suburb with shops and cafes only a short walk from the ship. Rotorua and Hobbiton are both only an hours drive away!
Capital of New Zealand and one of its first major settlements, Wellington is now a bustling commercial centre being the seat of the Government and many other institutions. Its dramatic location, clinging to steep hillsides along the harbour edge, gives it a unique character, often referred to as the Windy City. The Cruise Ships berth a short distance from the city.
Which side of the road do you drive on?
New Zealand drives on the left side of the road, just like England.
What currency is accepted in New Zealand
The local currency is New Zealand dollars. Some tourism destinations accept other currencies [usually just US dollars or Australian dollars, but this is rare. Credit cards can be used for all transactions though. Local currency can be bought at the local banks or ATM machines.
Are there any things i should know when taking a taxi?
All passengers services are heavily regulated in New Zealand for the benefit of the client. A taxi can only charge you the rate as shown on his taxi meter, this is for the whole trip, not per person. They can charge extra for airport collection or drop off, payment with credit cards, or service on public holiday. If you have any issues take a note of the drivers ID card [which must be on display] and also the cab number, your complaint can then be taken up with the New Zealand Transport Agency. All tour and shuttle vehicles also have similar rules to follow.
I see that some companies display a Qualmark logo, what is this?
Qualmark is the official organisation in New Zealand that monitors the quality of any business involved in the tourism or accommodation industry. It is not compulsory but companies can apply for this and will only be issued with the certification if they pass an annual assessment which covers all aspects of their business. So its a good idae to use a Qualmarked business if you can as you should be assured of good service.
The cruise lines are always saying not to use independant tour providers, why?
The cruise lines want to dissuade their passengers from booking with other tour providers as they are obviously loosing business, they say that there is no guarantee the ship will wait if you get back late. More and more passengers are now finding smaller independent Tour providers who can provide great tours in smaller groups and usually at much lower cost. Its down to you to find a reputable company, in our case we have runs tours for 18 years and never missed a boat.
Are we expected to give gratuities to guides or in restaurants?
Its not expected in New Zealand to offer gratuities, but if you feel the person has offered exceptional service it is fine to offer a gesture of thanks. If you do or don't, nobody will be offended either way.
We have just been awarded a "Certificate of Excellence award for 2019 by Trip Advisor , confirming our position as a quality provider here in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui.
If you are looking for a place to store your luggage before or after you cruise while you take one of our tours or have a look around the city, then check out The Luggage Hotel link we have at the bottom of our Standard tour options.

SEABOURN ANNOUNCES WESTERN KIMBERLEY TRADITIONAL OWNERS, WUNAMBAL GAAMBERA, AS GODPARENTS OF SEABOURN PURSUIT
Seabourn Makes Milestone Moment as First Cruise Line to Appoint Aboriginal Traditional Owners as Godparents
VIEW VIDEO HERE
SEATTLE, April 18, 2024 – Seabourn , the leader in ultra-luxury cruises and expedition travel, is thrilled to announce the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners as godparents of Seabourn Pursuit , the line’s newest ultra-luxury, purpose-built expedition ship.
Seabourn is the first cruise line to appoint Traditional Owners as godparents of a ship. The naming of Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners as godparents of Seabourn Pursuit serves as a symbolic gesture of stewardship and responsibility toward the environment and the communities that Seabourn visits, as well as Seabourn’s commitment to sustainable tourism. The naming ceremony will take place on Seabourn Pursuit’s June 22-July 2, 2024 voyage in the Kimberley region of Australia.
“We believe no one can give a better blessing to our ship than the communities we visit. We truly believe in the transformative power of travel, and when we visit local communities, we are able to both celebrate their culture and drive positive sustainable change in the places they call home,” said Natalya Leahy, president of Seabourn. “When we set out to name the godparent for Seabourn Pursuit , we knew we wanted to do something that celebrates this special moment for the ship and also allows us to drive long-term sustainable positive change in line with the values Seabourn and our guests stand for.”
The Wunambal Gaambera people are the Traditional Owners of a region in the Kimberley that includes the sea country of Ngula Jar Island (Vansittart Bay) and Yirinni (Hunter River), and the freshwater country of Ngauwudu (Mitchell Plateau).
Christening the ship is a symbolic event that bestows blessings upon everyone who will ever sail on board. The godparents bring good luck and protection to the vessel with this maritime tradition. Godparent to the Wunambal Gaambera people can be described as garrangarru – which is a word used to describe a mother or listener. Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC), its country and people, embody ideal ambassadors or godparents for Seabourn Pursuit . Their rich cultural history and deep connection to the land and sea, alongside their established sustainable tourism initiatives along the Kimberley Coast, make them a natural fit for Seabourn Pursuit’s inaugural season in Western Australia.
Representatives from the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation will be at Ngula Jar Island on the Uunguu Coast to welcome Seabourn Pursuit guests and to participate in the inaugural dedication ceremony on June 29, 2024.
A Lasting Partnership: Investing in Sustainable Tourism
As part of this appointment with the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners, Seabourn will make a donation to assist Wunambal Gaambera to develop a self-sustaining industry, producing authentic works of art and craft by Wunambal Gaambera artists to sell. In addition, Seabourn will also supply the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation with pearl shells and various art supplies and polishing materials to foster sustainable, commercial arts and craft initiatives year-round for Wunambal Gaambera artists and craft producers.
Seabourn intends to work alongside Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners as they share their unique Uunguu Experience – the sharing of their Wanjina Wunggurr culture through welcome and smoking ceremonies; rock art tours; junba song and dance; and art and stories from the Uunguu Rangers looking after and keeping the country healthy.
“We, the Wunambal Gaambera people, have a communal need and responsibility to look after and prosper from our country. Seabourn’s contributions will assist us to be on country, look after and keep our land and sea country healthy, strengthen our Wanjina Wunggurr culture, and create economic opportunities for our people,” said Catherine Goonack, Chairperson of the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation. “It is important we are looking after our country in the way of our Wanjina Wunggurr law. We are happy when we and our future generations are living and working on our healthy Wunambal Gaambera Country. We appreciate Seabourn’s support to us in these efforts and look forward to sharing our unique Uunguu Experience with Seabourn and their guests as the garrangarru or Godparents of the Seabourn Pursuit .”
Seabourn's monetary contribution, along with funding already received from the State Tourism Authority, Tourism Western Australia, will contribute to Wunambal Gaambera’s development of tourism facilities and products for Traditional Owners to live on their country during the dry season when tourism operators can access the vast coastline of the Kimberley region. Seabourn congratulates Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation’s implementation of their Uunguu Visitor Management Plan to reconnect with their country, to manage visitor access and take leadership in the tourism industry, and to engage with water-based visitors who arrive on their land, thus participating in the value chain that operators like Seabourn offer. Ngula Jar Island will be featured on all Seabourn itineraries in the Kimberley, ensuring consistent visitation to Wunambal Gaambera Country.
“This is a wonderful collaboration of Wunambal Gaambera and Seabourn that is augmented by Tourism Western Australia, demonstrating our shared values and the promise of greater opportunities for Traditional Owners in the Kimberley region. We are proud to support Wunambal Gaambera’s Ngula Jar Island development as we strive to position Western Australia as the leading Australian destination for authentic Aboriginal experiences,” said Carolyn Turnbull, Managing Director of Tourism Western Australia. “We know visitors to Western Australia — the Dream State — are seeking immersive Indigenous experiences and the work we are supporting on Ngula Jar Island will enable this to happen. The ongoing visitation fueled by premium cruise tourism operators, like Seabourn, provides the necessary market to make this initiative successful and sustainable.”

Princess Cruises Rolls Out Fleetwide Dining Revolution: Traditional, Reservable, Open Seating, and Anywhere Service Now Available for Every Guest Preference
New options follow successful debut aboard new sun princess.

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., (April 13, 2024) – Princess Cruises today announced it is making a significant enhancement to the main dining options found across its fleet, designed to give guests the ultimate in flexibility and choice when it comes to their dining experience by offering three table service options – Traditional, Reservable, or Walk-in Anytime - coupled with the brand’s industry exclusive OceanNow location-based “anywhere” service.
With a dedication to personal preference and individualized service, Princess will designate separate dining rooms aboard every ship in the fleet* to the three table service options – one dedicated to traditional dining offering an early and a late seating every evening; one offering reservable dining times; and a third with open seating to support walk-ins anytime. The three table service options integrate with the line’s unparalleled OceanNow, which provides guests the convenience of ordering anything, anytime, and receiving it anywhere onboard, making Princess uniquely positioned to accommodate all guest dining preferences.
Making all dining formats available fleetwide follows the resounding success of this new approach already implemented aboard the new Sun Princess. With the stunning introduction of the new next level Love Boat came the debut of three-story dining room with one floor dedicated to traditional dining, another serving guests with a flexible reservation and a third for anytime walk-ins.
“Our guests have been delighted with the dining flexibility aboard Sun Princess and we’re pleased to extend the concept to all the other ships in our fleet,” said Sami Kohen, Princess Cruises vice president of food and beverage. “Now whether guests prefer an early seating every evening, or change things up every night, or even change their mind, these flexible dining options ensure that their dining preference is effortlessly accommodated.”
Starting on April 15, 2024, the new approach will launch on Princess voyages departing September 14, 2024 and beyond. To support these changes and the transition to the new system, main dining reservations that already have been made for voyages sailing September 14 and beyond for any ship except Sun Princess will be cancelled. Main dining reservations for guests sailing through September 13 will not be affected.
Starting June 17, booked guests will be able to use the app ahead of their voyage to opt for traditional seating in a dedicated dining room with the same waiter, same table and same time each night, or flexible dining, allowing them to enjoy dinner at any available time and table size of their choosing in either the Reservable or Open Seating dining rooms.
This change does not affect guests booked in specialty dining restaurants or suite or reserve collection accommodations, who enjoy a dedicated dining room on Princess ships, where no reservations are required.
