How to Reset the “Oil Change Due” Light on a Dodge Journey

2013 journey reset oil life

Here is a super quick guide on how to reset the “Oil Change Due” light in your Dodge Journey!

If you buy through links on my site, I may earn a commission – at no cost to you. Every click helps; thank you for helping me keep this site active!

The “Oil Change Due” light comes on every 5,000-10,000 miles after being reset (depending on type of driving). This is a nice reminder that you need an oil change, but can be a bit annoying as well! Luckily it is very easy to reset this light. It is in the owner’s manual as well, but usually it is easier just to Google the solution! Here are the steps to reset the light.

Oil-Change Supplies:

  • Mobil 1 Full-Synthetic 5w-20 Motor Oil
  • Mopar Oil Filter – Dodge Journey (2009-2019) (both 4 Cyl 2.4L and 6 Cyl 3.5L)
  • Oil Change Kit

Step by Step Instructions:

Reset the “Oil Change Due” Light using these steps:

  • Start with the vehicle off. Do not press any foot pedals.
  • Press the start button twice to get it to the “On/Run” setting.
  • Press the gas pedal all the way to the floor 3 times within 10 seconds.
  • Press the start button again to turn the vehicle to the “Off” setting.

Detailed Steps with Pictures:

Start with the car in the off position. Normally you would press the brake with your foot and press the start button. In order to reset the “Oil Change Due” light, DON’T press the brake pedal with your foot.

Simply press the “Start” button twice, slowly, to get it into the “RUN” position.

I’d wager those it’s not working for are stoping at the accessory position and not going to the run position. Press the start/stop 2x without your foot on any pedal- the car won’t crank without your foot on the brake. Then press accelerator 3x within 10 seconds then start stop again. It works, I promise!

Thanks for the comment, good tip!

We’ve tried this a million times, different speeds and it isn’t working, any other options?

Hi Michelle, sorry it’s not working for you.

Some other things to consider are that other factors can also play a role. For example, if the headlights are on, it may not work. Also, the emergency brake. Try to think of things like that, that could be affecting it.

Wish I had a better answer for you! Good luck!

Doesn’t work. Tried it 5 different times

Thanks. Very simple to do.

You’re welcome, glad to help!

I have been trying this and it will not go off. I just had an oil change. Is there any other tips on how to get it to turn off

You all missed 2 major steps. For push starts, you press TWICE without pressing brake pedal. The car’s run light should be on. You press the acceleration down 3 times as stated. And THEN, while car is still on the run light, you press the Brake and then it should leave.

I followed the steps as shown on my 2018 Journey and it worked perfectly.

I followed these states and it worked perfectly.

For PUSH-BUTTON start models (mine is 2014) ……follow Camille’s correction above.

Thanks Camille for the correction.

About Dodge Journey

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by FCA’s Dodge brand since model year 2009, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. With styling by Ryan Nagode, the Journey is marketed globally in both left and right hand drive. In many markets, the SUV was marketed as the Fiat Freemont. (source:wiki)

The 2011 reworking brought a much nicer interior and a better V6, but the lack of agility and still-mediocre fuel economy keep it out of the top ranks. Plus it was more expensive than many better rivals.

How Often to Change 2013 Dodge Journey Oil

Not sure how or where to get your Dodge Journey’s oil changed? Get the advice you need at Firestone Complete Auto Care! Our expertise goes beyond tires. Oil and lube services are also our specialties. After all, like our maintenance technician Brianna says, “Oil is the blood of the engine. It’s the #1 thing you can do for your car.”

Your 2013 Journey’s oil should be changed according to Dodge’s recommended oil change intervals. See mileage and month specifics in the above table. Your Journey may need an oil change right away if your check engine/oil change light is on, you hear engine knocking, smell oil inside the vehicle, or notice excess vehicle exhaust. You might need an oil change more frequently than what’s recommended by Dodge if you regularly haul heavy loads, frequent dusty roads, go off-roading a lot, or drive at low speeds for long distances. In general, being extra-diligent about oil changes won’t damage your Dodge Journey. Each oil change is actually another chance to check and resolve other car issues, such as worn brake pads or tire treads.

What Kind of Oil Should I Get for My Dodge Journey?

Whether it’s synthetic, conventional, or a blend of both — your local Firestone Complete Auto Care has the right oil for your Dodge Journey. Dodge has specifically identified either synthetic or conventional as the best oil for 2013 Dodge Journey vehicles. Motor oil reduces friction between engine components, regulate engine temperature, and prevent the build-up of harmful substances within the engine. In an oil change service, one of our techs will change your Journey’s oil, replace and recycle the old oil and filter, check all of your other filters, top-off essential fluids, and visually inspect the rest of the vehicle. You can rest assured knowing that we seek to do what’s best for your Journey by considering your driving style, and mileage.

Types of Motor Oil for Dodges

Wondering if we carry the right motor oil for your Dodge? We stock outstanding motor oils because that's what your engine deserves. Talk with a teammate and consult your owner's manual before picking a motor oil. At Firestone Complete Auto Care, you can choose from the following oils: Quaker State® Advanced Durability™ conventional oil, Pennzoil® High Mileage Vehicle® motor oil, Pennzoil Platinum® Full Synthetic motor oil with PurePlus™ Technology, and Shell Rotella® heavy-duty engine oil. There are plenty of motor oils on the market today, so why do we prefer these brands? They are proven winners. For instance, Quaker State was shown to provide 2x more protection than the industry standard when tested in taxi fleets across the country. [1] And Pennzoil? Pennzoil Synthetics are the most technologically advanced, fully formulated motor oils available and exceed current industry and manufacturer requirements. For heavy-duty engines, there's Shell Rotella. It's made for gasoline and diesel engines that need to withstand rugged conditions, and is fortified to deliver heightened performance in extreme temperatures, increased wear protection, and better oxidation resistance. For help picking the correct motor oil for your 2013 Dodge Journey, refer to Dodge's recommendations first.

  • Why check the motor oil level in my Dodge Journey? Engine oil lubricates moving parts in your engine. If your oil runs low, these parts can grind together, overheat, and cause your Dodge Journey engine to fail. That’s why it’s best to check your oil levels and get your oil changed regularly.
  • How hard is it to change Dodge Journey oil at home? Changing your own oil isn't as convenient as you might think. It requires special tools and old oil must be disposed of properly. Having your oil changed professionally can not only reduce the risk of something going wrong during the service, but also help your car perform down the road.
  • Why is my Dodge Journey exhaust smoke grayish or blue? Your engine could be burning oil due to a leak. It may be time for a pro to take a look. The leak could be the result of worn valve seals, damaged piston rings, or damaged cylinder walls.
  • Where can I get Dodge Journey oil changes? Firestone Complete Auto Care performs Dodge Journey oil changes and more! Our technicians also replace oil filters, troubleshoot oil leaks, and advise on the right oil for your ride.
  • What does it mean if my Dodge Journey oil light comes on? Your Dodge Journey oil change reminder light might illuminate if it’s been too long since your last oil change. On the other hand, the oil pressure light might illuminate due to a clogged oil filter, a faulty oil pressure sensor, low engine oil levels, or a malfunctioning oil pump.
  • Do I need to replace my Journey’s oil filter when changing my oil? Every time you change the oil in your Dodge Journey, you should also replace the oil filter. Otherwise, you risk contaminating your brand-new oil with the dirt and debris built up in your old filter.

  • The “Oil Change Due” light is an indicator that illuminates on the dashboard of your Dodge Journey to remind you that it’s time for an oil change.
  • This light serves as a helpful tool to ensure the proper maintenance and longevity of your vehicle’s engine.
  • The light typically appears after a set number of miles or a specific duration has passed since your last oil change.

Why Does It Light Up?

  • The “Oil Change Due” light lights up to notify you that the oil in your Dodge Journey needs to be changed.
  • This light is triggered by the vehicle’s internal computer system, which monitors various factors such as mileage, engine operating conditions, and the type of oil used.
  • Once the predetermined threshold is reached, the light is activated to let you know that it’s time for an oil change.

Importance Of Regular Oil Changes

  • Regular oil changes are crucial for maintaining the overall health and performance of your Dodge Journey.
  • Oil acts as a lubricant for the internal components of the engine, reducing friction and preventing excessive wear and tear.

Choosing the right type of oil:

  • Refer to your Dodge Journey’s owner’s manual to find the recommended oil viscosity and performance rating.
  • Look for oils that meet or exceed the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Consider factors like climate, driving conditions, and your vehicle’s age when choosing the appropriate oil type.
