Visit a travel medicine specialist before your trip

As you get ready to travel to another country, you probably have many details to coordinate and plan. One essential task, depending on where those travels take you, may be to make an appointment to see a travel medicine specialist.

A travel medicine specialist assesses travel-related risks and provides information to ensure your health and safety while minimizing the potential for health-related situations during your trip.

Adding a consultation to your travel to-do list:

A consultation with a travel medicine specialist includes discussing travel-related illnesses, risk factors for infectious and noninfectious diseases, required immunizations, health regulations and drug-resistant organisms you may encounter.

It’s crucial to schedule a pretravel consultation at least 2 weeks — and preferably 4 to 8 weeks — before your trip to ensure you get complete protection from any needed vaccinations. When requesting a travel medicine consultation, be prepared to provide information about your trip, including:

  • All countries being visited
  • Any transportation, accommodation or other circumstances that are out of the usual
  • Dates and duration of travel

A travel medicine specialist will review your itinerary before your consultation to identify country-by-country health risks, such as exotic infectious agents, the potential for altitude sickness or heat exhaustion, as well as appropriate vaccinations and possible need for malaria-prevention medications.

Your opportunity to learn about staying healthy abroad:

A consultation gives you the opportunity to learn about health risks you may face while you’re traveling and once you reach your destinations. Based on your itinerary, the travel medicine specialist may:

  • Explain the risks of infection from mosquito-borne illnesses and the steps for protecting yourself. This includes reviewing medications to prevent malaria, which is a potentially life-threatening illness.
  • Ensure you receive protection against vaccine-preventable illnesses, such as hepatitis A or typhoid fever, and verify that other routine vaccinations are current.
  • Evaluate your overall health for travel and discuss with you how to manage preexisting conditions.
  • Give tips for preventing jet lag, motion sickness, altitude illness and blood clots.
  • Go over how to prevent and treat traveler’s diarrhea, the most common travel-related illness.
  • Help you reduce the chance of becoming ill during travel.
  • Provide a yellow fever vaccination and an International Certificate of Vaccination, also known as a yellow card, if you travel to a country where the vaccine is recommended or required.
  • Review food and water precautions. Contaminated food and water can pose disease risk for travelers, many of which are transmitted via by swallowing or coming in contact with impure water, such as fresh or sea water and swimming pools.

Be sure to ask the specialist any questions you may have about your personal health and raise any safety concerns about your travel itinerary.

Get sick on your trip? Check-in with a travel medicine specialist:

Once you return home, a travel medicine specialist can conduct a comprehensive post-travel evaluation of any illnesses you may have picked up while away, including parasitic infections and other tropical diseases that are rare in the U.S.

No matter the reason for travel, always be prepared to ensure your health and safety.

Lousy receptionists - love my family doctor, but the receptionist experience is HORRIBLE with the exception of my doctor's assistant - she's amazing. I called today to have my head checked - hit it on my bathroom vanity - and the receptionist told me my family dr wasn't free but I could have a waitlist call with another dr between 10am and 2pm - I missed his call at 10:50 am. And then I find out that she had booked me in for 10:50am! So here I was waiting for his call and nothing. I called them and she was all 'dah' then offered another phone call on Sunday with another clinic dr. Here I am with concerns about this head injury - thankful I got an appointment booking online myself with my family dr for a week away. Really unhelpful and inexperienced receptionists are being hired.

Photo of Chris K.

I see Dr. Pearce through the family practice and he is kind and does a great, thorough job. He is also an adept listener. I have found reception to also be good. Many thanks.

Absolutely frustrated. Had an appointment booked for a cyst removal with Dr. Crow and was informed less than 72 hours before the said appointment it was going to be canceled. This is absolutely devastating as I have frequently had cysts before and one got infected last year due to lack of care. I was informed and trusted my care with Dr. Crow and was let down majorly.

I have had problems in the past and went through some of the things Kayla went through, and to be honest I was in tears at times because of the attitude on the other side of the conversation. However, as of late, I have been very lucky when Tammy answers the phone. I feel like a real person and someone respects me. She never makes me feel rushed and does all she can to help me. She cares about her patients and if she doesn't have the answer, she follows through and actually helps you. I no longer feel stress when I call my Dr. as I know there is someone there who likes her job and takes pride in it.

This review is based on the service that I received from the walk-in clinic, so I do not have an opinion on the family practice that operates from the same location. I want to start by saying that I did not have an issue with any of the receptionists that I spoke to, unlike other reviews. Each of them were helpful and offered to double check on my concerns, and were never rude to me. I originally called to make an appointment for the walk-in clinic in early May, and had to wait 5.5 hours for the phone appointment that they put me in line for. This was completely understandable, as I'm sure that walk-in clinics are very busy and have a lot of stress due to the COVID pandemic. Dr. Lewans was the one to call me for my appointment, and I couldn't be more upset with how the call was handled. I was consistently talked over while trying to explain my situation, and the call was so rushed that it made waiting 5.5 hours seem ridiculous. For reference, the phone call to the clinic to arrange an appointment was 4 minutes long, and the appointment itself lasted only 2 minutes. I understand that the clinic may have been very busy, but treating patients like they don't deserve more than 2 minutes after waiting for so long is blatantly disrespectful. During this very brief appointment I was referred to get an x-ray, and was told by Dr. Lewans that I would need to call the separate x-ray clinic and set up an appointment. I looked into this x-ray clinic and their website said that I needed a requisition form from a doctor, which is something that Dr. Lewans never mentioned. This had me feeling like I had been screwed over and would have to make another appointment to receive this form. It turns out that Dr. Lewans forwarded this form to the clinic without informing me of this process. Once I had x-rays taken, the very kind worker at the separate clinic told me that I would receive results from Dr. Lewans in 3-4 days. After 8 days, I called Saanich Plaza Medical Center back to check in on my results, and they still had nothing to show. I then waited for 2 weeks and I had still not heard any results, so I called back again. I was told that my results had arrived in their clinic, but Dr. Lewans had not had the chance to review them yet. Fast forward to an entire month later, where I had still not heard from the clinic. I called back for the final time, and the receptionist told me that there is likely no significant results from my x-rays if I had not heard back by then. I was then told that I was welcome to make a follow-up appointment by calling back tomorrow, which I declined. It would seem that telling your patient that they would only be contacted if there were any significant results would be standard, but I was never told this. Hence, I was left waiting for 6 weeks after my x-ray without any form of communication from the clinic, aside from when I had to call them myself. Despite still having the same pain that caused me to book the original appointment with Dr. Lewans, the lack of clarity and value for the patients has me looking for a new clinic to get a second opinion. I would heavily suggest that anyone who is still looking to visit the walk-in clinic should avoid Dr. Lewans if possible, due to the lack of empathy and constant interruption.

STARS??! I hope you all believe in what I'm writing. For past one week, I've been trying to get hold of the clinic people and I was advised to call as early as 8am. I tried on Thirsday/Friday and waited till 9pm for someone to answer and hung up (probably little impatient but I work 9-5 on weekdays). However, I took a day off Monday and started my call @7:59 when system said wait time is approx 9'. After 9', music stopped and general telephone ring started. I literally waited 2 hours and 11 minutes when a recept answered and very rudely first thing she said that we are full and can't take anymore. I explained her but she wouldn't believe and kept saying that it wouldn't let me wait for this long. So I was accused of lying. uou know what it becomes more frustrating because you are on hold relying on a climic and invested all your hopes and what then a VERY RUDE receptionist will answer to snap at you. I wish I had hung up and tried a different clinic at least to have another option. Well, that seems to be my fault! VERY DISSSPOINTED!

Photo of Don R.

Horrible experience here. Needed a Doctors certificate for insurance, to could take time off and get the rest needed for recovery and to not get fired. A flat refusal to even consider completing the form. As if rest is not a legitimate treatment for illness. Sheesh.

Photo of Crystal S.

Absolutely awful receptionists. They cut you off when you are speaking. Extremely rude. This is at the family practice side not walk in. I believe they know how hard it is to find a dr so they think they can treat the patient's with disrespect.

Photo of Jack C.

HORRIBLE - find somewhere else. Doctors are really rude and too lazy to even try and help you. Don't waste your time; there are too many other places which have Doctors who deserve the title. Doctors are suppose to try and help their patients, not have them leave feeling worst then when they arrived. Waited over an hour and Doctor told me he was too busy to help me.

Photo of Stephen R.

3rd time trying this horrible clinic. No empathy, no care, no help at all. If you were on fire in-front of any of the GP's, they wouldn't care. All 3 times the Dr.'s were short, no eye contact, no empathy, cold and non-caring. I went in today with an un known problem and explained my case. He assumed another dr. was taking care of it and told me to go to someone else or to the emergency. Heavily assumption based and would not see passed his own presuppositions. He did not give me any direct care or help. I'd get better advice talking to a wall. Victoria's Dr problems are similar to a circus and this clown could be the ring leader. I recommend avoiding this clinic at all costs. I would give this clinic a 0 star if possible.

Florida abortion ban prompts two Southern states to prep for an influx of patients

Demonstrators march in the rain during an abortion rights rally

After the Florida Supreme Court cleared the way for a state ban on abortions after six weeks , clinics in North Carolina and Virginia say they are gearing up for an influx of patients.

Once the law takes effect on May 1, Florida will no longer be a refuge for people seeking abortions across the South. The state currently allows abortions up to 15 weeks of pregnancy — a far less restrictive policy than those implemented in many nearby states , including Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi, since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.

More than 9,300 people traveled to Florida from other states to get abortion care last year — more than double the number in 2020, according to data from the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports abortion access.

Around 84,000 abortions were performed in Florida in 2023, representing around 1 in 12 abortions nationwide.

Come May, the closest option for Floridians and some others in the South who seek abortions will be in North Carolina, which allows abortions up to 15 weeks but requires people to receive in-person counseling at least 72 hours in advance. The next-closest option is Virginia.

Abortion clinics in both states are preparing to accommodate more patients by adding staff or extending hours of operation. Providers have had time to get ready, since Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Florida's six-week ban in April 2023. Its implementation was on hold pending the state Supreme Court decision, which came on Monday.

The Bristol Women’s Health Center, which offers abortions in southwestern Virginia, expanded its hours a few months ago to accommodate people from Florida and other Southern states. It has also started offering services in the evenings and sometimes on weekends.

“It is already hard enough for somebody who’s driving 12 hours away,” said Karolina Ogorek, the center's administrative director. “While their reproductive health choices are being taken away by their state, as an abortion provider and a clinic, we want to give them as many choices as possible to be able to access the care that they need.”

The center also plans to work with funding agencies such as The Pink House Fund in Mississippi to help cover travel and lodging costs for patients coming from far away.

A Woman’s Choice, a network of clinics with a location in Jacksonville, Florida, opened a new clinic in Virginia last month in anticipation of Florida's ban. That clinic is working to add doctors, according to Amber Gavin, the organization’s vice president of advocacy and operations.

But even so, she said, demand could be quite high.

“Florida was seeing a huge influx of patients from the Southeast, and I’m very concerned that the neighboring states aren’t going to be able to accommodate all the Floridians and folks in the Southeast,” Gavin said.

Jenny Black, president of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, similarly said that the organization’s North Carolina clinics are making more appointments available. But those clinics already have a two-week wait time for abortions.

“Planned Parenthood health center staff in North Carolina are doing their level best to quickly expand capacity and increase appointment availability ahead of the near total ban in Florida taking effect, but it will not be enough to stem the tide of patients from across the South who have few options left," Black said in a statement.

For many women, traveling to get an abortion isn't an option because of a lack of resources or other circumstances.

Florida clinics anticipated the state's new law so have already trained additional staff to perform ultrasounds and confirm pregnancies. They are trying to see as many patients as possible before the end of the month.

“We’re opening up more ultrasound appointments scheduled for the next 30 days to get people in,” said Michelle Quesada, vice president of communications and marketing for Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida.

Quesada cautioned that, starting in May, patients will need to show up before the six-week mark, since Florida law requires two in-person visits to a clinic, 24 hours apart, ahead of an abortion.

“You’d have to find out you’re pregnant in your fifth week of pregnancy, which is one week after a missed period for someone with a perfect 28-day cycle,” Quesada said.

“I can only imagine in 30 days the sheer volume of patients that are going to be confused, scared, feel like they have no other option when they learn that they’re beyond six weeks,” she added.

Florida’s law allows exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

"I would think that it’s OK to have an abortion if the mother’s life is in danger. This particular law, this six-week bill, does have that — so there wouldn’t be any reason to have to travel," said Ingrid Duran, the state legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, an anti-abortion organization.

Duran noted that Florida's ban sets aside $25 million to expand the Florida Pregnancy Care Network, a group of centers that aim to convince women not to have abortions. Such centers offer pregnant women counseling and supplies like car seats and diapers, but some have been known to provide inaccurate or misleading information .

Duran said the funding may help address a lack of access to health care, counseling and support that she believes could be "some of the reasons why women choose to have abortions."

The fate of abortion access in Florida isn’t set in stone, however: The state Supreme Court also decided that a proposed amendment to its constitution that would enshrine abortion protections can be on the November ballot.

“ What we’ve seen in other states is that when abortion is on the ballot, it wins,” Gavin said.

Medical walk-in clinics can add you to a daily waitlist to see a walk-in clinic doctor as soon as you show up in-person or call. Many clinics listed on medimap.ca offer online check-in so patients can simply submit a check-in request to add their name to the waitlist without physically visiting the clinic or calling ahead.

However, if you’d prefer to schedule an appointment for a future date/time rather than be put on the waitlist for the day, you can contact a clinic directly to book an in-person or virtual visit.

What Services Do I Have to Pay for at a Walk-In Clinic Near Me?

The following is not generally covered at a walk in clinic. Fees will apply if not covered by other health insurance plans (i.e. a work health insurance plan):

  • Doctor’s sick notes
  • Prescription medication
  • Some additional recommended treatments, like physiotherapy or chiropractic clinic appointments (some provinces cover some services)
  • Any tests or medical services not deemed medically necessary

Remember to bring your health card to the walk-in clinic to ensure your services are covered. Those without a health card can see a doctor but will be required to pay a fee. According to the Wellesley Institute , the average cost of a walk in clinic appointment in Toronto without Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) is $60.

In some cases, a walk-in doctor may suggest another diagnostic test, such as an ultrasound. In these cases, they’ll refer you to an appropriate centre or hospital nearby. As long as the tests are deemed medically necessary, they’re covered under your provincial health plan.

Why Do Walk-In Clinics Sometimes Close Early and Turn Me Away?

In some cases, a medical walk-in clinic near you may close earlier than its stated hours of operation. This is because some provinces set a maximum capacity for how many patients a clinic can see each day. Since the office can’t bill the government past a set limit, they shut down for the day.

To avoid being turned away, check walk-in clinic wait times on medimap.ca to see which clinics have already reached capacity and which are still open.

Do I Need to Visit a Walk-In Clinic In-Person to Speak with a Doctor?

Traditionally, walk-in clinics were only offered in-person. The reason they’re called “walk-ins” is that you need to go to a physical location, join a waitlist, and wait your turn to see a doctor. Originally, provincial governments didn’t pay providers who offered virtual services, meaning there was less incentive for virtual walk-in clinics.

However, during COVID-19, virtual services became the norm. Today, every provincial government pays doctors to offer virtual services. As such, you can now easily book a walk-in clinic appointment that takes place over the phone or video chat.

Although in-person appointments are necessary sometimes, many concerns can be addressed virtually. Phone and video chats allow your doctor to verbally assess you or answer your questions. In some cases, a doctor may ask you to send a photo or show you the affected area on video.

Some virtual clinics work with doctors all over Canada. To speak with a local doctor, use the filters to find walk-in clinics nearby that offer in-person, phone, or video visits. Alternatively, you can also speak to the next available doctor via video call by selecting Virtual Care from the medimap.ca homepage.

How Do I Find a Family Doctor?

A family doctor is your primary care provider for continuous care. This is the person you would make an appointment with if you have a new non-emergency health concern. If you don’t have a family doctor, you’ll need to find a family practice accepting patients. Each province has specific ways in which residents should find a family doctor.

To find a family doctor in your area, please visit medimap.ca and enter your postal code or city, and search for “walk-in clinics”.

Then on the search results page, click the link near the left of the screen which says “Are you looking for a family doctor? Click here to find one”. This will generate a list of clinics that have family doctors accepting new patients. You can give them a call to schedule a consultation.

Alternatively, each province has a resource to help people find a family doctor.
