Things To Do

Music | the lumineers’ video for “sleep on the floor” doubles as saddest colorado tourism ad ever.

A screen shot from The Lumineers' new music video which features scenes shot in Colorado.

If you are a human in the United States, you’ve probably heard of the Lumineers, the Denver-via-New Jersey band that sparked a pop-folk movement with its debut album and solidified its status as a songwriter’s band in its second, 2016’s “Cleopatra.”

The band has been releasing a steady stream of music videos from the new album throughout the year, typically featuring a sort of split-life effect where the song’s main character can see what would happen in their life if they decided to zig instead of zag.

Their video for “Sleep on the Floor,” the opening track from “Cleopatra,” is no different. The song follows a girl who glimpses her life if she ran away from home with a boy after a funeral, with all the requisite ups and downs of a road trip with no defined end in sight.

Here's the Perfect Weekend Road-Trip Playlist, Courtesy of the Lumineers

By Alexandra Schwartz

We've waited four long years since the epic foot-stomping anthem "Ho Hey" for new music from the Lumineers , and now they've finally given it to us with the release of their sophomore album, Cleopatra , last month. It was worth the wait: the alluring album is filled with songs of love and longing that draw you in with raw, intimate vocals and guitar strums courtesy of band members Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Fraites, and Neyla Pekarek. It's a heartfelt reminder why we fell hard for this Americana folk trio from Colorado back in 2012—they're smooth, sentimental, and full of soul.

So, on the heels of their world tour (catch them on the festival circuit at BottleRock and Osheaga or at tons of other stops here ), we were eager to hear the music the band has on blast while on the road—so Neyla curated an ethereal weekend list (that includes "tasty treats" and yes, music from Hamilton !) just for you. Listen in!

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, "A Man Alive" "I love everything this band does, but teaming up with Merrill Garbus from Tune-Yards to make this record is just too much love for my heart to handle."

Sylvan Esso, "Wolf" "This whole record is incredible, but this track sticks with me for its unique lyrics and haunting, beautiful vocals that pair perfectly with the underlying super cool beats. And I love those wolfie howls!"

Sunday Lane, "Adderall" "My newest obsession; with hints of Ellie Goulding and something all her own, Sunday Lane has me hypnotized. And the Liza Nelson-directed music video is equally magnetic."

Esme Patterson, "What Do You Call a Woman" "Between Esme's smoldering vocals, delicious guitars, and enticing lyrics, this tune captivates its listener, leaving us wanting to hear the rest of the story."

Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, "SOB" "Couldn't be happier for these fellow Denver friends who have earned some much deserved attention and are forcing their audiences to show off their dance moves—because let's face it: You can't hear this song and NOT dance."

Baltimora, "Tarzan Boy" "I can't make a playlist without putting this song on it. It's just a tasty treat that puts me in an immediate good mood."

Hamilton: The Musical "If I'm being honest, this is pretty much all I've been listening to lately. I'm addicted."

WATCH ‘GLORIA’

The Lumineers release the visual for ‘ Life in the City’ – the last in a trilogy of gripping music videos to accompany their new EP ‘Chapter I: Gloria Sparks’ . The EP makes up the first chapter of the band’s forthcoming full-length visual album ‘III’ , out on 13 th September on Decca/Dualtone .

The album is a cinematic narrative told in three chapters , with the songs from each chapter focusing on one primary character from the three generations of the fictional Sparks Family . Each chapter will be released as an audio EP within the full-length album. The 3-song Chapter I audio EP was released in full on Friday and revolves around the family matriarch, Gloria Sparks .

The stories told, as the chapters unfold, deal with subjects very close to the heart of lead vocalist, Wesley Schultz .

Schultz explains: “Gloria is an addict. Her character was inspired by a member of my family, and no amount of love or resources could save her. She’s now been homeless for over a year. Loving an addict is like standing among the crashing waves, trying to bend the will of the sea.”

Subsequent chapters focus on Gloria’s grandson Junior (Chapter II), and then her son Jimmy Sparks (Chapter III). Each of the songs from The Lumineers’ new album will also be released as individual music videos that collectively tell the visual story of the three generations of the Sparks family . All the videos are directed by Kevin Phillips (known for his indie movies   ‘Super Dark Times’ and ‘Too Cool For School’) and produced by Neighborhood Watch. The videos for ‘Gloria Sparks’   star actress Anna Cordell as Gloria and Josh Close as Gloria’s husband, William.

‘III’ is the third album by two-time GRAMMY-nominated band The Lumineers, whose line up is original members and songwriters Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites plus violinist/vocalist Lauren Jacobson, pianist Stelth Ulvang, bassist/backing vocalist Byron Isaacs and multi-instrumentalist Brandon Miller. ‘III’ follows two platinum albums, their self-titled 2012 debut, which stormed into the Top 10 of the UK Official Album Chart (and was certified triple-platinum in 2018), and their second album, ‘Cleopatra’, released in 2016, which hit No.1 in both the UK Official Album Charts and No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 in its week of release.

The Lumineers have sold out tours across the world, selling over 300,000 tickets on 2017’s ‘Cleopatra World Tour’ which ended with 27 sold out arena shows. Their discography has racked up a total of 4.2 billion streams and 4.6 million album sales worldwide. The band have also supported icons and their musical heroes on the road, including Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers at British Summer Time Festival in London’s Hyde Park in 2017. This year, the band will tour across the US and Europe, with nights at three UK arenas including a date at London’s O2 Arena.

Film / Sleeping On Floors

Edit locked.

In the summer of 2016 we decided to take a little bit of money and go a long way to tell the story of a young couple on a road trip. The idea was to make a feature length film and then release the trailer for that film in the form of the music video "Sleep on the Floor".

Sleeping on Floors in an unfinished film, made by Isaac Ravishankara and the band The Lumineers . It stars Elise Eberle and Adam Lively as a young couple in their 20s on a Road Trip Plot .

  • Agent Mulder : Levi of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Cleo finds this charmingly eccentric, and has an open mind about it, but does not take him seriously , to his annoyance. Levi: This is your first time in New Mexico, right? Cleo: Yeah, completely. Levi: So you know nothing about the aliens here? Tony: What? Levi: Ok, ok, so let me explain. Aliens are real, right? You guys agree?
  • The Alleged Car : They buy the car off Craigslist and pay $400 for it. It has no AC, and they're pretty skeptical of its ability to get to New York.
  • Arc Words : "Smooth sea never made a skilled sailor."
  • The Cameo : The Lumineers appear and play at the house party in Denver.
  • Comforting Comforter / You Must Be Cold : At the very end, Anthony puts his suit coat over a sleeping Cleo and gives her a kiss on the cheek before taking his leave. He also leaves her the car.
  • Darker and Edgier : The core of the plot, really, is about Cleo and Anthony's relationship problems and eventual breakup. This is omitted from the music video, which would have you believe they're a great couple.
  • Differing Priorities Breakup : They always said they'd get married someday, but Anthony seems to really want to, while Cleo doesn't. In the end, they break up.
  • Disappeared Dad : Levi's dad is to him. He asks Anthony and Cleo to visit Levi on his behalf, as a way of reaching out. Dad: He lives with his mom. We haven't really... had much communication for quite a while there, uh... Yeah, tried email, I've tried calling him... not much...
  • Driving Stick : Cleo hasn't driven stick before. Subverted, in that she gets a handle on it pretty quick. Double subverted in that another car trouble follows soon after when they run out of gas.
  • Ending Theme : "Slow It Down" by The Lumineers
  • Foreshadowing : At about the 8 minute mark, a tape of a voicemail plays. Anthony: It's me. Sorry I took 2 days to call you back. I don't know if this is the right time, or whatever. Um. I've been thinking about our adventure that we went on and something. Y'know, I don't know, it just, it kinda sucks, y'know, having this story and not being sure whether or not to share it with other people or keep it all to myself. [ Beat ] How's that car doing? She still running, even? [ Beat ] I'm back in California. I haven't been able to save enough for a plain ticket, you know how much those things are. I miss you. I hope that's ok to say. Um. I have to work early in the morning, but if you get this, I'll be up for a couple hours, so gimme a call back. Tag, you're it.
  • High-School Sweethearts : Anthony and Cleo have been together since high-school.
  • The Kindness of Strangers : Levi is very hospitable to the strangers his estranged father sends his way. Levi then passes them along to his friend Stel in Denver, who invite them to a house party and then give them a place to stay.
  • Metaphorical Marriage : Cleo and Anthony always said they'd get married someday. Upon deciding they they need to break up, they decide to have their wedding right there, tonight, as a sort of one last hurrah. There is no reason to make it legally binding, though.
  • Not Staying for Breakfast : At the end, after their wedding, Anthony leaves before Cleo wakes up, so that their last moment together can be a beautiful one, rather than having to face the pain of ending.

lumineers video road trip

  • Rejected Marriage Proposal : When Anthony proposes to Cleo, she initially thinks he's joking ( My God, You Are Serious! ) and then—when he isn't—she has no words. She doesn't actually say the word "no", but she doesn't say anything else either, which makes it pretty clear. Anthony says they've talked about it, but "it's always something."
  • Road Trip Plot : They set out from Lancaster, California, and go to Vegas, then Albuquerque, then Denver.
  • Viva Las Vegas! : They make a spontaneous detour to Vegas. While they're there, Anthony proposes, perhaps trying to invoke the married in Vegas trope.
  • Welcome to the Big City : They leave from Lancaster, California, and are bound for New York City. Subverted, in that they only get as far as Denver, Colorado.

The Lumineers have today released the music video for their new single ‘ Brightside ’. The four-and-a-half-minute clip is a joyous, heartfelt celebration of romantic love, opening with a variety of people answering the question, “What does love mean to you?”, before going on to showcase the love of couples of all ages, races, and genders. These couples are then seen waltzing around the band as they perform the song.

The poignant video, directed by noted documentarian filmmaker Kyle Thrash explores love and relationships through people of different ages, ethnicity, and orientations. The band also appears in the video, performing at a dance in an American Legion Hall.

The Lumineers - BRIGHTSIDE

“The ‘Brightside’ music video is like a documentary of the American love story,’ says the band’s Wesley Schultz, “It features all real people – none of the people that appear in it are actors.”

‘Frampton’: Peter’s Pre-‘Frampton Comes Alive’ Breakthrough

Heavy metal thunder: the origins of heavy metal.

These visuals certainly complement the song’s subject matter. The band’s singer, guitarist, and co-founder Wesley Schultz describes ‘Brightside’ as “a 15-year-old’s fever dream, an American love story in all its glory and heartbreak. The last couple left, on the run from something, and all alone…”

‘Brightside’ is the lead single from the multi-platinum, Grammy-award winning band’s upcoming fourth album of the same name, which was announced last week. The album will be released on Friday, January 14, 2022 via Dualtone in the US and Canada and Decca Records for the rest of the world.

The Lumineers’ first album of original material in two years sees Schultz and fellow songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jeremiah Fraites at their most joyous and spontaneous, with the two men performing virtually all instrumentation themselves.

Back in May, they released a new live EP, Live From The Last Night Of Tour , which is now available digitally through Decca Records.

Brightside is out on January 14 and is available for pre-order.

Billy Idol - Rebel Yell LP

The Lumineers (Deluxe Edition)

With their playful, rustic indie folk, The Lumineers deftly evoke a nostalgic vision of America. Lyrics about American Bandstand, JFK, and flappers dot the Denver band's debut as vocalist Wesley Schultz adds a Dylan-esque quaver to foot-stompers ("Flowers In Your Hair") and piano-parlor romps ("Big Parade"). Sparse acoustic ballads "Dead Sea" and "Slow It Down" temper the mood with slithering strings and wistful crooning, but it's the shout-along "Ho Hey" that sums up what this album is all about: "Love, we need it now."

‘The Lumineers’ music video filming on Greenville Road

  • Chas Hundley Author

More in Greenville:

lumineers video road trip

GREENVILLE – This week and in early April between Strohmayer/Kansas City Road and Highway 47 on Greenville Road, you may see a man bleeding as he walks down the side of the road. An ambulance and police vehicles may pull into a local driveway, and you may even catch a glimpse of someone burning a piano.

There’s no need for alarm though, though – it’s all part of a music video for The Lumineers’ upcoming album being filmed at a property on Greenville Road this week and into April.

The Lumineers are an internationally recognized folk rock band based in Denver, Colorado, with numerous international hit singles, including “Ho Hey”, “Stubborn Love”, “Ophelia” and “Cleopatra.”

While an air of secrecy surrounds the project, with casting calls removed from social media, web pages taken down and people involved with the production citing non-disclosure agreements when asked for more information, the Banks Post sought public records and used cached web pages to determine much of the information in this article. The Lumineers could not be reached for comment.

lumineers video road trip

According to a permit filed with and granted by Washington County to use the right of way on Greenville Road, filming is taking place from March 25 through April 9, largely at a property owned by Lewis Farm, Inc.

The production, by New York-based film company Neighborhood Watch Productions Inc, will use the Greenville Road right of way on three filming dates, temporarily restricting traffic while that occurs, according to the permit.

On April 1, filming will occur sometime between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with 3-5 minute traffic holds, and on April 5 between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. with 3-5 minute traffic holds. `

On April 8, traffic may be halted for 5-10 minutes at a time between the hours of 5 a.m. and 3 p.m.

According to a casting call by Portland-based casting company Simon Max Hill Casting, the project is a series of dramatic music videos directed by Kevin Phillips following a working-class family, known as the Sparks, spanning multiple generations from 1954, 1980, and 2019. In the film and video permit submitted to Washington County, the Greenville Road property is listed as the “Sparks House” and one character is referred to as Jimmy Sparks. The videos will accompany The Lumineers’ upcoming third album.

The director has worked on Lumineer music videos before as a cinematographer, according to his IMDB page, and also directed his debut feature film, Super Dark Times, a drama thriller that was picked up by Netflix.

The Banks Post could not determine if any of The Lumineer members would be present for filming.

As for the aforementioned piano, Forest Grove Fire & Rescue public information officer Dave Nemeyer says he was contacted by a member of the production team who asked about burning a piano, scheduled for April 3 according to the film permit.

“I said it’s doable by fire code, but would need some fire safety provisions established first,” Nemeyer said in a text message to the Banks Post.

According to Nemeyer, the team plans to send him details on just what “lighting a piano on fire” meant.

The production company says that neighbors have been notified about the project, which includes a brief moment of nudity.

“Nothing of poor taste or sexual in nature from this scene… just a woman feeling the breeze against her skin in a moment of freedom,” the permit read.

The Greatest Road Trip Songs, Ever

50 road trip songs to make the miles fly by..

F inding the right song in the car can be as frustrating as trying to find the right movie on Netflix on a Friday night. As we head out on a weekend trip or a bucket list vacation, we find ourselves mindlessly scrolling through radio stations or hitting ‘pass’ on “Suggested For You” playlists. You need the right soundtrack for your time in the car .

This story contains affiliate links; A Girls Guide to Cars may earn a commission from sales generated by links in this story.

To help you navigate this slight roadblock, these are some of the best tunes to listen to when it’s just you, your family, and the open road. Let’s just start here:

1. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen

During long road trips, one can never go wrong when listening to songs by Queen. Freddie Mercury, the true lyrical genius he was, wrote this nearly six-minute track for the release of Queen’s album A Night at the Opera which took the music industry by storm in 1975. Arguably the most well-known song from the band, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is perfect for jamming out in the car because of its energetic tempo and stimulating verse.

Best car for singing to Queen: Range Rover

2. soak up the sun – sheryl crow.

Looking for a light-hearted and upbeat melody befitting a summer song? Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up The Sun” has got you covered. It’s the type of tune that one would listen to when they want to drive with the windows down in a cool breeze and bathe in the warmth of the sun. It came out in 2002 alongside Crow’s other single “Steve McQueen.” “Soak Up The Sun” is proof that the early 2000s knew how to make music that will last forever.

Best car for singing along with Cheryl: Toyota Sequoia

3. ophelia – the lumineers.

In 2016, The Lumineers became even more popular after their release of “Ophelia,” inspired by William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet . Through it, the alternative band demonstrated their ability to produce yet another hit song (the former being “Ho Hey” in 2012). In the two minutes and forty seconds that “Ophelia” has been recorded, its lyrics will no doubt be stuck in your head for the rest of your drive.

4. mr. brightside – the killers.

Yet another throwback to the early 2000s, The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” is a song to scream to in the car when the road dwindles down to nothing but desert or treelines. If you thought that you heard it everywhere you went in the United States ten years ago then you might be shocked to learn just how much more traction it gained in the United Kingdom. Not only has it gone down in music history as one of the most streamed songs there, it was also selected as the “Song of the Decade” by several U.K. radio stations.

5. cruel summer – taylor swift.

This one is for all of the Swifties out there (especially since her recent embark through the U.S. on her Eras Tour). Based on the brilliance of her lyrics, Taylor has proven herself to be the mastermind of the current music industry. “Cruel Summer” was originally released in her 2019 album, Lover , but is set to be re-released on June 20th as a single. Its exuberant energy is sure to set you basking in the afterglow of the summer sun when cruising down the highway in the fast lane.

6.  party in the u.s.a. – miley cyrus.

This one makes everyone sing along, and makes everyone feel like a teenager (again). Party in the U.S.A. shares emotions we can all identify with – the nerves of being somewhere new, among people we don’t know, looking different, feeling homesick. And then, it gives us the confidence we can find our way, make new friends, find ourselves in this new place. This song is fun and contagious, and none more perfect for a road trip and the destination at the end of the ride.

7. daylight – david kushner.

Perhaps a lesser-known song than the others, David Kushner’s “Daylight” has also dominated the internet with its calming ambiance and powerful vocals. The most recent release on this list (as it came out in April), it has secured Kushner his position in becoming a rising star, one that you should look out for as he grows even more prominent in the industry. Behind the lyrics, Kushner has stated that “Daylight” was inspired by the Bible, specifically that of Paul’s Epistles in the New Testament.

8. beautiful boy (darling boy) – john lennon.

Although “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)” was made public in 1981, there is a 2010 remastered version available across streaming platforms (like Spotify and Apple Music). With such a mesmerizing and soothing melody, it’s not a surprise that John Lennon wrote it as a sort of lullaby for his son, Sean. The boy is even named at the end of the recording as Lennon bids him good night. As a member of The Beatles, Lennon continued to prove his ability to stand alone as an influential and compelling lyricist through “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy).”

9. little talks – of monsters and men.

Of Monsters and Men released their song, “Little Talks,” in 2011 and received a generous reaction from both its American and European audiences. While the track already provides us with something worth listening to, its lyrics go deeper than you might think. Switching between two perspectives, “Little Talks” portrays two lovers being trapped in the same house they lived in after one of them has passed away. The feminine voice is talking to either her deceased soulmate or herself as she slowly loses her sanity (this is up to the listener’s interpretation). In contrast, the masculine voice responds to her from the other side of the afterlife or, perhaps, it’s not really there at all. Telling a tragic story, the song is beautifully and yet hauntingly written.

10. life is a highway – rascal flatts.

Although “Life is a Highway” was originally recorded by Tom Cochrane in 1991, the Rascal Flatts made a cover of the song fifteen years later in 2006. As an exhilarating country rock track, this version is definitely worth the listen. Unfortunately, the group itself is no longer in production as it officially disbanded in 2021 but after nearly twenty years together, they made enough music for you to sing along to in the car for the rest of your drive.

Anthony davis has a big goal for lakers' upcoming six-game road trip, share this article.

With a three-game winning streak under their belts, the Los Angeles Lakers head out on a six-game road trip that begins with a battle against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday.

The Bucks are in second place in the Eastern Conference and have been on a roll since the All-Star break. They’ll also want revenge after the Lakers beat them without LeBron James a the start of the month.

Los Angeles may be without James again on Tuesday; he’s listed as doubtful due to ankle soreness. Regardless, Anthony Davis wants his team to go undefeated on this trip, which will take them into April (at 1:54).

“We just need to continue to play our style of basketball and focus on us and take it one game at a time.” Anthony Davis (36pts, 16reb) on the standings. pic.twitter.com/iU5MCxwj65 — Spectrum SportsNet (@SpectrumSN) March 25, 2024
“Six,” Davis said when asked how many wins he wants on this trip. “ We want to win every game. I think on this trip, we beat everybody. … So we know we’re capable, but it’s the road. It’s going to be tough, but we got the capability of winning each game. We got to approach it that way.”

L.A. has virtually no shot at finishing sixth in the Western Conference (it is in ninth place and is three games behind the sixth-place Sacramento Kings). But it needs to be playing its best basketball heading into the play-in tournament if it is to have a shot at making the playoffs and going on a deep run there.
