Texas State Railroad – East Texas

The Texas State Railroad , built by inmates long ago, is a heritage railroad between Rusk and Palestine, TX. There is an hour layover at the Rusk Depot, where each passenger will get a box lunch to enjoy outside on the depot grounds.

My mom and I got tickets for the Dogwood Lunch Train Excursion and enjoyed the view, talking with other passengers, and feeling the breeze outside the caboose.

Palestine has many attractions to boast about and is also a fabulous town for a mother-daughter trip .

Texas State Railroad

train trips in east texas

The Texas State Railroad takes you on a relaxing tour of the Piney Woods of East Texas aboard a vintage train built at the turn of the 19th century.

You'll wind through dense green forests, over rolling fields, and above scenic rivers that make up the Piney Woods’ beautiful scenery.

Along the way, you'll find yourself seeing, touching, and feeling the same things that people experienced more than a century ago.

Established in 1881, the railroad was built by inmates of the nearby Rusk Penitentiary to bring materials in and out of the prison. Its use was eventually extended to include transport of goods and passengers. In 1976, the railroad opened as a tourist line, running sightseeing tours between Palestine and Rusk.

Today, the Texas State Railroad is the official railroad of Texas offering a range of different rides that just about anyone would enjoy. For example, the railroad’s Piney Woods Train Excursion is a four-hour experience that takes you through the gorgeous East Texas countryside and offers the chance to see two historic steam trains switch tracks and pass each other at two different times during the ride. Order a box lunch in advance or feel free to bring your own. Half-way and one-way tickets are also available. The Piney Woods Train Excursion runs from March through mid-November.

In addition to the Piney Woods Train Excursion, several special event trains operate throughout the year, including holiday tours, themed trips, brunch and dinner trains, and the railroad's popular Christmas adventure, THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride.

Both the Palestine and Rusk depots are located on US Highway 84, approximately 2.5 hours from Dallas and three hours from Houston.

Come aboard for an unforgettable experience at the Texas State Railroad, a great option if you’re looking to go on a train ride in Texas.

Texas Railroad Museums, Railway Depots & Train Rides

The railroad has played an important part in the history and development of Texas over the years. Companies like the Texas & Pacific Railway and the Cotton Belt Route were dominant transportation giants in the area.

Today, interest in railroads remains high with residents, and tourists, as witnessed in August of 2021 with the tour of the Union Pacific 4014 "Big Boy" train through Texas.

Included on this page are highlights of some of the more popular railroad museums, train rides and historic railroad depots across Texas, with an emphasis on East Texas.

Whether you are touring in East Texas, North Texas, West Texas, or elsewhere in the State, there are many interesting railroad displays to explore!

The Tyler Tap Railroad began operations in 1877, and later became part of the Cotton Belt Railway. The Cotton Belt train depot in Tyler was opened in 1905. Today, the depot is the home of the Cotton Belt Depot Museum , and the Tyler Transit offices.

Included in the museum's collection are four large model train layouts, photographs, uniforms, hats, etc. that have been donated by former employees of the railroad, and friends of the depot. The Depot Museum has received visitors from all 50 states and 38 foreign counties, and is staffed by volunteers from the Cotton Belt Rail Historical Society.

The historic Texas & Pacific (T&P) Railway depot and museum is a major tourist attraction in Marshall, as are many other historical sites that showcase Marshall's long and varied history.

Located at 800 N. Washington Street, this ornate two-story brick station, once a major interchange point and division office for the T&P, has been restored to its former grandeur.

To get to the museum located in the Ginocchio National Historic District, visitors must pass through a tunnel below the still-active Amtrak line and enter the depot, where an impressive collection of railroad artifacts awaits. Items include memorabilia from early passenger trains, exhibits detailing the large-scale manufacturing functions at the shops, and hands-on displays including a model train and pull whistle.

The Nacogdoches Railroad Depot was built by Southern Pacific Railroad in 1911 after the original wooden depot burned to the ground following a lightening strike. In August of 1954 Southern Pacific terminated passenger services through Nacogdoches. The depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

It is now home to the SFA Center for Regional Heritage and features rotating museum displays such as the Loblolly Model Train exhibit, history of railroading in Nacogdoches, and others.

The depot is administered by the City of Nacogdoches and functions to collect, preserve and interpret artifacts and oral histories relating to the history of the depot and railroads of Nacogdoches City and County.

Located at 101 Old Tyler Road in Nacogdoches.

The Union Pacific Railroad paid tribute to President George Herbert Walker Bush with a custom-painted EMD SD70ACe locomotive. Incorporating colors and elements of the Air Force One used during Mr. Bush's presidency, the Union Pacific locomotive bears the number 4141, in honor of the 41st president.

On December 6, 2018, Union Pacific was honored to participate in President Bush's funeral train, led by No. 4141, from Spring to College Station, Texas. No. 4141 now sits in front of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum on the Texas A&M campus

Union Pacific 4014 "Big Boy" Visits East Texas in 2021

No other railroad in the United States has retained its historical equipment and honored its past as much as the Union Pacific. The preservation of its fleet speaks to the high value UP places on its heritage and its role in America's history. The fleet itself dates back to 1912, but most of the passenger cars are closer to a half-century old, built during the height of passenger train travel. Each car is unique and chronicles a different chapter of Union Pacific's past.

The Union Pacific Railroad built twenty-five of the massive 4-8-8-4 steam locomotives early in the 1940s. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds, and served primarily on the route from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Ogden, Utah. Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were articulated to allow them to negotiate curves.

The engines were originally going to be called the "Wasatch" series, but a worker at the locomotive works wrote "Big Boy" in chalk on the front of one ... the name stuck!

Only eight of the "Series 4000" engines survive today, and only one, 4014, is operational. Union Pacific also operates Northern No. 844, with its 4-8-4 configuration, the last steam engine built for the railroad.

The UP excursion train pulled by 4014 left Cheyenne, Wyoming on August 5, 2021. It traveled south through Fort Worth, Waxahachie, Hearne and down to Houston. After a visit to New Orleans, it headed north to Shreveport, east to Marshall and north again up to Jefferson on August 25. After stops in Texarkana, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Denver, the route took it back to the steam shop at its home in Cheyenne on September 7, 2021. Read more about Union Pacific heritage

We had the thrill of watching it and hearing the sounds of the engine and its whistles three different times on the segment from Marshall up to Jefferson!

When we saw the train, the engine was pulling 12 cars, some of which are shown below. The last three cars on the consist were removed in Kansas City, for movement to their home base in Council Bluffs, Iowa: UPP 9005, Walter Dean, dome lounge; UPP 5011, City of Denver, diner lounge; and UPP 119, Kenefick, business car.

Also included in the consist was UP 4015, an EMD SD70M, for backup power and dynamic braking.

I love to ride trains. My great-grandparents saw travel evolve from horse-drawn carriages to electric street cars, urban subways, and passenger trains.

Today, we seek fast travel by jet or a sleek car, but what about turning back the clock to railroad transit and passenger trains? There is something about the golden age of train travel that’s fun for all ages. It’s a time to slow down, relax, and let the landscape flow past us. Let’s explore train rides in Texas, great fun for the whole family. All aboard!

5 Epic Train Rides In Texas for an Amazing Experience

1. palestine to rusk, texas state railroad.

Step aboard a refurbished train car at the Texas State Railroad and feel like you have stepped back in time 100 years, where time slows down and tensions disappear. Relax and enjoy a 4-hour roundtrip train excursion from Palestine to Rusk and back, with vintage steam and diesel locomotives gliding through the piney woods of East Texas as the fall leaves begin to turn shades of golds, oranges, yellows, and reds.

At the depot, learn about the railroad communities, savor a bite to eat with family at the Rusk Mail Car Cafe, and shop the gifts and keepsakes at Roundhouse 1909 in Palestine. Ride comfortably, enjoy a historical narrative, meet friendly and entertaining staff, and sample food and adult beverages on your journey. The four-hour train ride breaks down to a 1.5-hour 25-mile trip to the destination depot, a one-hour lunchtime, and a 1.5-hour return trip.

In October, the Pumpkin Patch Express leaves from Rusk, a 30-minute round trip train ride, including hayrides, spooky music, a bounce house, concessions, and trick-or-treating on Trick or Treat Street. Each child picks out a pumpkin to take home for carving. Fall is a fabulous time to take a train trip through the U.S .

Make reservations now for the Polar Express for November and December. The Presidential Class car seating is limited where a ride with Santa, keepsake Polar Express mugs, hot chocolate, and cookies make for a magical experience.

Camping facilities at the Rusk Campground offer a stay onsite at a historic railroad, with access to depot amenities including lunch, gift shop, and movie theater access on train departure days. Movies filmed on the Texas State Railroad are featured, with stars like Denzel Washington, George Clooney, John Goodman, and Sam Elliot.

This was definitely one of my favorite U.S. train rides .

2. Cedar Park To Burnet

Austin steam train association.

All aboard! Take the historic 6-hour, 66-mile roundtrip Hill Country Flyer from Cedar Park, north of Austin, and just east of Lake Travis, to Burnet with a brief layover there for lunch and shopping. There are at least four classes of service : excursion coach, first-class coach, first-class lounge, and adults-only first-class lounge.

The Bertram Flyer is a shorter trip, traveling from Cedar Park to Bertram, with a 15-minute layover in Bertram and enough time to tour the 1912 train depot there. The train runs from March through November on Saturdays and Sundays.

The North Pole Flyer 2021 with Santa leaves from Bertram and is a 2-hour roundtrip. Arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure and be in your seat no later than 10 minutes before the train leaves. Read the Terms and Conditions about no refunds and restrictions.

Enjoy hot chocolate and the elf’s reading of the North Pole Flyer book.

Bring the little ones for a Day Out With Thomas , presented by Mattel. Ride the train with the classic storybook engine and have fun with “trains, games & miles of smiles!”

Mattel and the Museum of the American Railroad helped sponsor this event. I took my grandchildren for a train ride right after Christmas on the Grapevine Railroad Stockyards Trinity River Excursion . We traveled from the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards, through Trinity Park to the 8th Avenue historic railyard, then returned to the stockyards.

You’ll see the Great Train Heist, with greedy outlaws and the railroad detectives close behind.

5 Must-Do Scenic Train Rides in Texas

Posted by Cindy Brzostowski August 25, 2022 Updated September 14, 2022

Forget about planes and automobiles…all aboard on one of these Texas train rides!

If you’ve ever traveled around Texas, then you know that the car is king. Just look at that one infamous section of I-10 in Houston that has 26 lanes if you need any further proof.

Driving may be the most common way to get from destination to destination and city to city, but that’s not to say that it’s the only way to explore what the state has to offer. How about a cool train ride, for example?

While Texas doesn’t have nearly as extensive of a rail network as say the East Coast, it does have a handful of tourist train rides that offer fun journeys for the whole family.

And while the trains may be more for entertainment than for actually traveling from point A to point B, they offer far more than those mini train rides you see at zoos and amusement parks.

Whether you’re a local looking for something to do in your home state, a visitor interested in a unique experience, or an avid locomotive enthusiast, you won’t soon forget your time on one of these train rides in Texas.

1. Austin Steam Train

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kelly | DiscoveringATX (@discoveringatx)

Based in Cedar Park, the Austin Steam Train Association is putting in work to preserve the experience of historic railroad travel and offer that experience to the public.

It all came together after this one steam locomotive, Southern Pacific No. 786, was retired from operation and donated to Austin in 1956, and then two decades later, Southern Pacific sold miles of track through the Hill Country to the city.

Some rail aficionados with a vision of recreating historic passenger railroading put two and two together and thus the Austin Steam Train Association was born.

Currently, ASTA has three historic locomotives: two of which are in the process of being restored and one which is currently in use for rides. It’s not just the locomotives that are worth nothing though. The vintage train cars are something special—each with a distinct personality and story.

For example, there’s the Nambe, an adults-only, first-class lounge passenger car, which dates back to the 1930s and has seating arranged like a diner with tables and chairs. Then there’s the Buckeye Lake all-ages coach, which was built in 1949 for operation in New York and has funky blue seats.

The ASTA’s signature ride is the Hill Country Flyer which takes you through the Hill Country with a two-hour layover in Burnet and then returns you to their Cedar Park Depot.

For a fun family activity, consider joining the North Pole Flyer ride where Santa makes an appearance. For a unique date idea, there’s the Speakeasy Train during which you can pretend it’s the 1920s while drinking champagne and enjoying live entertainment.

2. Texas State Railroad

texas train rides - Texas State Railroad

Running between the cities of Rusk and Palestine over in East Texas, the Texas State Railroad offers a trip back in time—a scenic four-hour long, 50-mile round trip to be exact.

In one of their refurbished train cars, which date back to the early-1900s, you’ll make your way through the countryside of the Piney Woods region. Settle in as you listen to fun facts about the railroad’s history and lore and old-timey tunes.

Throughout the journey, you’ll cross over 24 bridges, and in the middle, there’s a one-hour layover for lunch at the depot. Getting peckish before the lunch stop? Just pick up some snacks in the concession car.

If the Christmas season is your favorite time of year, then you’ll want to climb aboard the Texas State Railroad’s Polar Express ride.

It’s easy to get in the holiday spirit as you’re served hot chocolate and cookies while listening to someone read out the classic The Polar Express. There’s also some Christmas carol singing too, so this is one experience that young kids are sure to love.

Attention campers: You actually have the chance to set up camp near the Rusk train depot, which itself butts up against a 15-acre lake with loads of different fish to try and catch.

Not only does that mean you get the experience of staying by a historic railroad but you’ll also get access to the depot’s amenities (there’s a movie theater!).

3. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad

texas train rides - Grapevine Vintage Railroad

Make your way over to Grapevine near Dallas, to check out the Grapevine Vintage Railroad . Depending on the day, you’ll either be pulled along by a steam locomotive from 1896 or a diesel locomotive from 1953, and the cars are 1920s Victorian coaches, so it’s history all around.

The train’s main route, the Cotton Belt Route, starts in downtown Grapevine and then takes passengers through a few different cities in the county until the Fort Worth Stockyards. You’ll get a couple of hours to wander around for a bit, and then it’s back on the train to return to Grapevine.

All in all, it’s about a six-hour experience. If that’s too long for you, consider doing the 30-minute Grapevine Bear Creek Short Line ride or the 45-minute Trinity River Train Excursion instead.

When booking a ticket, it’s up to you how classy you want to ride. There’s the economy class with wooden benches for seating, the touring class with floor-to-ceiling windows, first class with gorgeous upholstered seats, and the ambassador class where there’s extra roomy table-style seating and complimentary snacks.

The train runs 10 months out of the year (there’s a break in January and February for maintenance), and throughout that time, you can catch different special event trains. Love wine? Go fo the Jazz Wine Train, which features live jazz music onboard and tastings from local wineries.

And seeing as Grapevine is called the Christmas Capital of Texas, you know it’s going to be a good time on the North Pole Express where Mrs. Claus will be your host for all the festivities. Wearing your holiday pajamas is encouraged!

4. Historic Jefferson Railway

texas train rides - Historic Jefferson Railway

Have you ever been on a train ride that includes an alligator feeding as part of its journey? Say hello to the Historic Jefferson Railway .

Chugging through the woods and wetlands, this train ride, powered by a gas locomotive, takes about 40 minutes and includes a stop at the Diamond Don Gator Pit where you’ll get to watch a feeding. Unlike the other trains on this list, this train features open compartments so you can feel the fresh air and better take in the scenery as you go along.

You can catch a ride every Saturday either at 12:30 pm or 2:30 pm, and along the way, you’ll be treated to some interesting facts with the onboard historical narration. Along with that regular Saturday schedule, the railway does have various special events throughout the year.

In the past, they’ve done a spooky Friday the 13th train in the evening, which takes you through the dark woods. They’ve also done a special Mother’s Day Express and Father’s Day Express where the mom or dad being celebrated gets a 10% discount.

While you’re in the city of Jefferson, keep the train-themed fun going by heading a few blocks down the road from the railway to the Jay Gould Railroad Car that’s on display outside.

This historic train car was the private parlor car of the railroad magnate and is just across the street from the Excelsior House Hotel, which opened in 1858 and is the oldest continuously operating hotel in the state.

5. Bonus: Amtrak

texas train rides - texas eagle amtrak

Okay, we know Amtrak isn’t necessarily a tourist train ride like the others we’ve mentioned here, but we’d be remiss not to include some mention of it when talking about train rides in Texas.

If you’ve ever spent time traveling around New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., or Philadelphia, then Amtrak service may be old hat to you, but it’s not something your average Texas makes use of (remember what we said about car being king).

It is, however, good news for anyone who’s not into flying or driving, since Amtrak does offer some options for traveling through Texas with its passenger railroad service.

There are three Amtrak routes in the state and 19 Amtrak stations, including all the major cities of Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio.

One of the routes is the Texas Eagle , which get this, is the longest train route in the whole country! It runs from Chicago to San Antonio, and if that’s still not long enough for you, you can connect to Amtrak’s Sunset Limited in San Antonio to get all the way to Los Angeles.

Wondering how comfy or not you can get on such a journey, which takes between 30 to 32 hours? Well, pretty comfy if you decide to book a bedroom suite where the seats convert to beds and you have an in-room bathroom with a shower.

Anyone traveling in a private room gets additional perks like complimentary meals and lounge access. Now that’s some modern-day train travel for you.

You can walk your dog, rent a bike, try your hand at paddleboarding or just sit and admire the skyline. By this time, you might be ready for a short trip out of the city to hit the wineries on the  Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail . The vineyards won’t disappoint.

From there, grab your trail mix and head up to  Sam Houston National Forest  for a retreat into peace and pine trees. As the city skyline disappears in your rearview mirror and the woods start to surround you like a blanket, feel yourself relax and soak in the scenery. This beautiful stretch of land hosts an abundance of wildlife and natural lakes for fishing or canoeing. For the hikers among you, the Lone Star hiking trail provides 129 miles of beautiful scenery to explore. Feel free to stay all night if you like. There are some great camping options available in the area.

Less than two hours of driving directly north, you’ll find yourself in  Palestine, Texas , a small town famous for its wonderful old-timey train ride. When you arrive, grab a bite from Switch Brick Oven Pizza & Wine Bar will set you on the right foot for the adventure ahead. Your train adventure will leave from the  Texas State Railroad train depot  for a four-hour round trip that will transport you to a simpler time. Before heading out of town, check out  Bralys Ace Hardware . You might not need a new socket wrench, but the converted 1938 school building is worth a look around. The old lockers and bookshelves are still in operation—except now they hold merchandise.

Next, head east toward  Nacogdoches , Texas’ quintessential Piney Woods town. If you’ve got the time, be sure to hit the  Caddo Mounds State Historic Site , which is on the way, and take in the history of the Hasinai natives from over a thousand years ago. Originally a ceremonial space for ritual purposes, the site is a great place to learn all about the area’s Native American culture.

Nacogdoches is commonly thought of as the oldest town in Texas, and when you’re there, you’ll feel the history in the charming downtown and historic landmarks. For our nature lovers, we recommend meandering through the  SFA Gardens  and admiring the gorgeous collection of native plants.  Millard’s Crossing Historic Village  is another great option for those who want to be immersed in the history of the area. Stroll through the town center filled with real 19 th -century buildings for a unique opportunity to see a bygone era up close.

Just a 15-minute drive from Nacogdoches, you’ll find  Angelina National Forest , a great place for quiet and secluded camping or just sightseeing on a few short, pleasant trails.  Bouton Lake  is one great scenic option for fishing or a simple lakeside lunch. There is an abundance of hiking trails to choose from, but  Sawmill Hiking Trail  is a great option. It’s a short, moderate trail that goes right by the ruins of the Aldridge Sawmill, abandoned in 1923, which is now covered in greenery – striking amid the wilderness surrounding it.

If you’re up for one more nature park, this is a good one: Head south to  Big Thicket National Preserve , a complex and beautiful combination of nine different ecosystems with a diverse medley of plant and animal species. Camping here is “primitive,” meaning you’re on your own. Get a permit and you’re good to set up almost anywhere. The Neches River area provides miles and miles of scenery to enjoy by kayak or canoe, and there are 40 miles of Big Thicket trails to choose from for any level of hiker.

The Neches River runs all the way down to your final stop:  Beaumont  (although we recommend you travel there by road). Here you can find  Gator Country , a large alligator sanctuary. The kids will likely never forget the feeding show they put on here. For gators in their natural habitat, check out  Cattail Marsh . There’s always a plethora of activities being put on at the marsh, including Saturday morning yoga for a good stretch to end a long journey.

This trip is best when you slow down and take your time, listening to the sounds of the native birds, discovering the wonders of the flora and fauna and finding the perfect rock to balance your lunch on. What an adventure! So hit the road and remember to drive friendly, the Texas way.
