Classic Games to Play on a Bus
Not sure where to begin? Get the fun started with these classic road trip games that the entire family will enjoy.
Everyone already knows it, but itâs an age-old classic that never loses its charm. Take turns describing something you see using the phrase, âI spy with my little eyeâŚâ and then have everyone guess what it is.
To make things more interesting, choose an I Spy theme (i.e., signs, animals, or colours) or set a time limit for everyoneâs guesses.
2. License Plate Hunt
Prepare a list of states or countries, and have your group mark off each one they spot on passing license plates.
Turn it into a friendly competition to see who can complete their list first. You could also try to spot themed license plates or plates that begin or end with a certain letter or number.
3. Twenty Questions
Perfect for long bus rides, the skyâs the limit with what you can do with 20 Questions. Simply choose a person, place, or thing, and give your travelling companions twenty opportunities (using âyesâ or ânoâ) answers to guess who, what, or where youâre thinking of.
If no one has figured it out after 20 questions, they must take their best guess. Award points to the winner and then itâs their turn to think of something next.
4. Miniature Board Games
You might not have space for a gigantic board game, but youâll have no problem playing the miniature version during your bus ride.
Before you depart, stock up on the miniature (and preferably magnetised) versions of your favourite games â chess, checkers, Scrabble, Monopoly, or Battleship, to name a few. Donât forget an old-fashioned deck of cards too!
5. The Chain Game
Pick a category like celebrities, cities, food, movies, or TV shows. The first person gives their answer, and the next person must continue the chain by selecting a word that begins with the last letter of the previous answer.
For example, âOttawaâ could be followed by âAthens,â then âSacramento,â and so on. If someone takes too long to answer, they lose their turn.
6. Name the MostâŚ
In this game, everyone takes turns naming as many things as they can think of in a specific category.
Depending on everyoneâs age and interests, you could use categories like âDisney princesses,â âStar Wars characters,â âclassic cocktails,â or âAfrican animals.â
Whoever can name the most things in a set amount of time (i.e., 60 seconds) wins the game.
If you are in search of games to play on the bus with your group of friends, Here they areâŚ

Travelling with a large group? Get the entire bus involved with these fun bus games for groups of friends.
7. Fictionary
Pull up an online dictionary or a list of obscure words and get ready for some serious laughter with a game of âFictionary.â
Pick an archaic or little-known word like âcalcivorousâ or âscotophobiaâ but donât reveal the actual meaning.
Instead, have everyone write down and share their made-up definitions â the one who gets the most laughs wins.
8. Name That Tune
Queue up your favourite playlist and play the first few seconds of a song. Or, if youâre feeling really daring, try singing or humming the tune instead!
The first person to correctly guess the song then gets their turn to choose a song and have others guess.
9. Bus Stop Gourmet
If youâre tired of the same boring snacks, make breaks more interesting by turning them into your own brilliant version of a food competition!
Before you arrive at the next bus stop diner, gas station, or convenience store, give each âplayerâ a set budget.
The goal is to create the most interesting meal possible with the food options available at that location.
10. Actors & Actresses
Start by choosing a well-known movie or TV show. The first person must then name an actor or actress who plays in it.
The next player must name a different actor or actress, and so on. The first person to get âstuckâ is out!
11. Kiss, Marry, or Avoid
Youâll be rolling in the bus aisle laughing when everyone joins in this funny bus game for families or groups of friends.
The premise is simple â pick three well-known famous people (alive or dead, real or fictional).
Then everyone takes turns naming which of the people they would kiss, marry, and avoid.
12. Fortunately, Unfortunately
In this game, youâll tell a story one line at a time alternating between fortunate and unfortunate events.
For example, the first person may begin by saying, âFortunately, this will be my first time visiting Disney World.â
The next person adds to the story by saying, âUnfortunately, it was raided by pirates last weekend.â
The story could continue with, âFortunately, the pirates left behind a chest of buried treasureâŚ.â and so on.
Next up: some bus games for kids to prevent boredom from a long bus ride.
Fun Bus Games for Kids
Tired of hearing, âAre we there yet?â Keep the youngsters entertained with these fun bus games for kids.
13. Story Building
Start telling a story with an opening sentence, then have the kids take turns adding to the story one sentence at a time.
If youâre having trouble getting started, try choosing three nouns at random, such as âturtle,â âflower,â and âice cream.â
Then build the story around those three items (and get ready to laugh, because things will get silly fast).
Print out some road trip bingo cards before your travels or make handwritten bingo cards while youâre on the bus.
Think of objects youâre likely to pass on your trip â for example, a blue car or a yellow house.
Give each member of the family a bingo card and see how long it takes to tick off each item. The first one to spot every item wins when they shout, âBingo!â
15. Word Association
Hereâs a creative game that requires everyone to put on their thinking caps (and gives some interesting insight into how our minds work).
Start with a random word and have the next player say the first word that comes to their mind.
It could be something predictable â i.e., âboyâ and âgirlâ â or you might get some funny and unexpected surprises.
16. Scavenger Hunt
Before you leave for your trip, think about some things youâre likely to see along the way.
Create a scavenger hunt list for the kids (and the adults) to use during the journey.
For example, you could collect silly souvenirs or regional snacks from convenience stores.
Or you could make an âI Spyâ type of list of things to watch out for, like a spotted dog or a man in a blue hat.
17. Alphabet Storytelling
One person chooses something that starts with the letter âA.â The next person must recite that word while adding something that starts with âBâ and so on.
Itâs easy in the beginning, but by the time youâre halfway through the alphabet, it can be tough to remember all those items!
For an added twist, choose a common theme for the words (i.e., animals, foods, cities, etc).
18. Cows on My Side
Easy to play but tons of fun, those miles will fly by when everyone in the family is actively looking for cows out the window.
Every time someone sees a cow and shouts, âCows on my side!â they win a point. If someone calls out, âCows on your side!â before someone on that side sees them, they steal a point.
19. Hypotheticals
Parents, you can keep your kids entertained for hours by asking a list of fun hypothetical questions.
For example, âIf you could turn yourself into any animal, what would you be and why?â or, âIf you won a ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you want to go?â
Last but not least, here are party bus games for adults that you must try!
Party Bus Games for Adults
Boarding a party bus with your besties or cosying up for a long bus ride with your partner?
20. Movie Line Marathon
If you and your friends love films, youâll all love this funny bus game!
Recite a line from one of your favourite movies and have everyone guess which movie itâs from.
Donât just stick with lines everyone knows â try to think of obscure lines from lesser-known films to make it more challenging.
21. Two Truths and a Lie
How well do you know your travelling companions? Youâll find out soon enough with this game that requires some serious creativity (and the ability to lie).
Think of three things to share about yourself â the funnier or more outrageous, the better â keeping in mind that two are actually true while one is a lie.
Then have your friends guess which one is the lie.
22. Would You Rather
Break the ice by posing a funny, gross, thought-provoking, or outlandish choice to your travel companions.
For example, âWould you rather win the lottery but lose all your friends or lose all your money but find your soulmate?â or âWould you rather wear someone else’s dirty underwear or use someone else’s toothbrush?â
Youâll be amazed not only by everyoneâs answers but also by the hot debates these questions can spark!
23. Tell Me a Story
Can you build a story four words at a time? Youâre about to find out with this hilarious game thatâs perfect for big groups!
One person begins a story using just four words â for example, âI went to theâŚâ or âI opened the doorâŚâ â and the next person continues the story with four more words.
Keep going around the bus to build your (usually hilarious) story four words at a time.
24. Never Have I Ever
This is usually a drinking game, but you can easily adapt it to a road trip setting by having everyone hold up 10 fingers. (Of course, if youâre riding on a party bus, go ahead and have a drink in hand!)
The first person must state something theyâve never done â something as crazy as skydiving or something as mundane as dyeing their hair.
Everyone in the group who has done that thing puts down a finger until someone runs out.
25. Guess the Time
The itinerary claims youâll be at your destination in seven hours, but will that really be the case?
Make things interesting by having everyone write down their guesses for the arrival time before your bus departs.
Whoever correctly guessed the time (or is closest to it) should win a special prize when you reach your destination.
26. While You Were Sleeping
If everyoneâs on board, this hilarious game will create memories youâll be laughing about for years to come!
Wait until someone on the bus falls asleep, then concoct a funny story about something that happened while that person was asleep.
When they wake up, your goal as a group is to get the person to believe that your made-up story actually happened (and they missed it).
Whatâs Your Favourite Funny Bus Game?
As you hit the road, remember that these bus games are not just about passing time.
They’re about creating bonds, making memories, and enjoying every moment of your journey.
So, gather your travel companions, unleash your inner child, and let the games begin!

And donât forget these games work equally well in a car, truck, RV, or whatever else youâre hitting the road in.

Top 10 Travel Games: The Best Road Trip Games for Adults
Traveling is a blast, but let’s be real, long journeys can test our patience. If you’re on the road with kids or family, you know the struggle of the endless “are we there yet?” questions. That’s where road trip games swoop in to save the day! But guess what? Adults can get bored too. Of course you know that. So, to keep the trip from turning into a snooze-fest, let’s load up on some awesome travel game ideas!
What are road trip games?
Road trip games are travel games you play to make time go by faster. They can stimulate your memory, jolt your creativity and implicate one, two or more people. H ereâs why fun road trip games make it worth putting your phone down during the journey:
- Theyâll help you bond with your travel buddies.
- Theyâll occupy your mind with something else than passive entertainment (such as social media or streaming).
- Theyâll make time pass by so much faster.
- Theyâll most likely make you laugh (which is good for your health!).
- Youâll pay more attention to the scenery and notice things you would have never seen, what with your head riveted on your smartphone screen.
So, which are the best road trip games?
Here are our top 10 favorite road trip games for adults. The cool thing is they work as bus travel games or car games, and you can even take some ideas with you for a plane or train ride.
#1 Best classic travel game: the I spy road trip game
Although you may have played this game when you were small, weâre pretty sure youâll still enjoy it! The I spy road trip game. It is one of our favorites because it forces you to look around and search for rarities or detail. Remember how it goes? Itâs quite simple.
The goal of this classic travel game is to guess what object or thing the spy has in mind!
- Designate one person to be the spy.
- The spy starts the game by finding something they can see out the window, in the bus or vehicleâand says, âI spy with my little eye, something thatâŚâ.Â
- Take note that the spy cannot change objects during the game.
- âSomething that starts with the letter ___.â Giving out the first letter is the most common way to play the gameâand the hardest for people to guess.
- âSomething that is the colour ___.â A colour clue is more commonly used if playing with kids, since it makes the guessing easier.
- Another variant is to give out other clues in relation to shape, composition, texture, material, weight or height. But again, this makes the guessing game easier.
- âIs it larger than a bus?ââto which the spy could answer âyesâ or ânoâ.
- âIs it a tree?â
- The spy can answer âyesâ if the guess is accurateâor with âhotâ (close) or âcoldâ (not close) to give indications whereas to how close that guess was to the spied object.Â
- If the guessing game has been going for a while, the spy can encourage the other players to guess again and give more precise feedback, by responding with âwarmâ (closer but not close) or âfreezingâ (totally off-topic).
- Each player takes a turn asking a question or taking a guess and the first person who guesses the correct object wins the game.Â
- For the next round, the winner becomes the spy!
Number of Players
You need at least two players to Play I Spy⌠No maximum!
#2 Best travel board game: road trip bingo for adults
Who doesnât like bingo? The cool thing about travel bingo is that there are at least two ways to play when youâre on the roadâso if you donât have a pen and paper handy or if you havenât thought ahead and purchased a card game, you can still play.Â
Travel Bingo Game with a list
Equipment needed: pen and paper.
Make sure you have a pen and paper handy. First, solicit everyoneâs help to make an exhaustive list of car brands. Then, look out the window and shout (or whisper if youâre on a bus!) BINGO every time you spot a brand that is on the list! Keep count of your findings! The first player to find every brand on the list wins the game.Â
Travel Bingo Cards
Equipment needed: travel bingo cards & a pen for each player.
If you like to plan ahead, youâll love this version of road trip bingo. To play, print out several cards in advance (several websites offer downloadable bingo cards for free!) and simply set up in the bus to play with your friends, just like a normal bingo game! The goal? Checking off items as you see them in your surroundings (hence, the pen) until all the items are checked in one same row of your card⌠at which point you can discreetly scream, âBINGO!â
#3 Best long drive game: the license plate travel game
With the license plate travel game, you can step up the game and increase the difficulty level as you get better at it. And, if youâre on the road for a long time, this road trip game will definitely provide entertainment for a while.Â
The Easy Licence Plate GameÂ
The easy version of the license plate travel game is to interpret the letters for each license plate you see from your window. Depending on which state or province you travel through, this could be more or less challenging. For instance:
- BN2Â Y679 could stand for Barry Never Yells
- 2848 EB could stand for Early Bird
The Licence Plate Travel Game: Expert Version
If you want to step it up a notch, you could incorporate numbers too, and interpret the full license plate. The interpretation could go something like this:
- C84 0UV could stand for Catherine Ate (8) Four Ugly Vermicelli Â
License Plate Search
If you get bored with the first two versions of this road trip game, you can change it up and turn your licence plate game into a competition! The goal? To find the most licence plates from different states. To play this last version of the game, youâll need a pen and paper to jot down your states!
#4 Most poetic road trip game â the rhymes travel game
Youâre a poet and you know it? This game is for you! Rhyme away as the road rolls by, playing this fun rhymes road trip game.
Find the most words that rhyme.
- The first player comes up with a one-syllable word and says it out loud.
- Then, the second player has three seconds to come up with a one-syllable word that rhymes with the first word.Â
- Watch out, you canât repeat the same word twice!
For example:
- The first person says âseaâ.
- The second person says, âpeeâ.
- The third person says âsheâ.
If a person hesitates for more than four seconds, they are eliminated. The last person standing wins. If the game is too easy for you, you can also play with two-syllable, three-syllable and more words!
Although itâs often more fun when youâre playing with four or more people, you can still play if youâre traveling as a duo!
#5 Best verbal games to playâthe many versions of the alphabet travel game
There are several ways to play the alphabet game! If the road you are travelling is full of signs (cityscape) or is really stimulating visually, you might want to play the version where the goal is to find objects, words or buildings in your surroundings. If not, youâll want to pick themes.Â
The goal of the alphabet game is to find words for every letter in the alphabet, from A to Z.
Version A: Picking out stuff around you
- Start with the letter A and work your way down to Z.
- A, for Animal
- C, for City
- One word cannot be repeated twice.
- The first player to call out a word that begins with Z wins the game!
Version B: Picking out a theme
This version of the Alphabet Travel Game works if youâre traveling with friends and some of you can see too well out of the window.
Decide on a theme with your travel buddies. To make it fun, think of unconventional themes, such as âpartyingâ, âbody partsâ or âtravel destinationsâ.
- A for Arizona
- B for Buffalo
- C for California
- Words cannot be repeated and players who canât come up with a word are disqualified.Â
- The first one to make it to Z wins!
This game works starting with two people but can be played in a larger group, too. The more, the merrier!
#6 Best fortune telling game: the superlatives game
The superlatives game is really cool to play if youâre traveling with a group of old friends. What with your history and the diversity of profiles, youâre sure to laugh a lot!
The goal is to find a person to fit every superlative category.
- Most likely to invest in a Ponzi Scheme
- Most likely to get food poisoning
- Then, for each item in the list, vote for which friend fits the bill most.
Equipment : Youâll need a pen and paper to make a list of superlatives.
Itâs the most fun to play this game if youâre at least four people traveling togetherâand ideally 6 to 8!
#7 Best game to test your limits: the âwould you ratherâ game
The Would You Rather Game can be funny, super gross â or both! And if you really want to get the most out of this travel game, ask players to justify their choices. Interesting debates will take place â and youâll surely have a good laugh.
The goal is to stump other players by giving them an impossible choice.
- Each player takes a turn asking a âWould you ratherâ question.
- Think of incredibly funny and try to make the choice so difficult that the other players wonât be able to decide.Â
- Read a few tough questions to inspire you.
- Every other player has to answer the question.
- If a player canât answer, they are disqualified.Â
Equipment : You donât need any specific equipment to play the game per se, but you can purchase Would you rather cards .
The more people play, the more fun youâll have! At least two players are needed.
#8 Best game to play devilâs advocate: the fortunately/unfortunately trip game
This travel game will encourage you to think outside the box and awaken your optimistic or pessimistic side. Quite simple to play, it can lead to some exciting dialogues! And, if youâre feeling a little frisky, you can launch the first âfortunatelyâ in an absurd or daring direction.
The Goal of the Fortunately/Unfortunately Game is to build a story from beginning to end, by alternating optimistic and pessimistic statements.
- The first player starts with making a âfortunatelyâ statement.
- The next player has to reply with an âunfortunatelyâ statement.
- And so on, until the story reaches a conclusion.
- The first player says: âFortunately, the bus was on time.â
- The second player says: âUnfortunately, we took the wrong one.â
- And so on, alternating with âfortunatelyâ and âunfortunatelyâ.
This game can involve two or more people. If there are only two of you though, we recommend imposing the âfortunatelyâ statements to the most pessimistic person!
#9 Best word game: the ârelated wordsâ travel game
This word game encourages your brain to make links between things and words. If you play with a couple of friends, youâll quickly notice that some are really good at looping back to their initial idea, while others get distracted easily. If youâre one of the latter, you can secretly practice playing the related words game on your own time to become better at finding links and looping back!
The Goal of the Related Words Travel Game is to make the quickest link between words to loop back to your initial word.
- To launch the game, a starting word is chosen.
- All participants then think of words that relate to this first word.
- The player with the shortest list of words looping back to the initial word wins the game.
- The starting word could be: âbusâ.
- Player #1 could make the following list: âbus, travel, walk, hostel, restaurant, sleep, busâ.
- Player #2 could do: âbus, bus driver, bus station, passenger, bus tickets, busâ
- In this case, Player #2 would be the winner, since he only used 4 words (vs. 5 for Player #1) to loop back to the word âbusâ.
Equipment : y ou can play this game by using only your memory, but sometimes itâs easier to make a list and count the number of words using a pen and paper.
Although the game becomes more interesting when three or four people chip in, you can manage with only two players.
#10 Most shocking travel game: the Never Have I Ever Game
The goal of the Never Have I Ever game is to guess if the statements are true or false. And of course, to try and surprise your friends with the most shocking true statements!
- Each participant starts off with their 10 fingers up.
- One by one, each player makes a statement that starts with âNever Have I Everâ. For instance, this could go something like: âNever Have I Ever eaten a frogâ or âNever Have I Ever jumped from a planeâ.
- All the other players who have done this thing take one finger down. So obviously, the point is to come up with crazy or funny things your friends may have doneâbut you havenât.
- If you wish, you can ask the players who have put a finger down to tell their back storyâyou might hear some pretty interesting things!
- The last person to have any fingers up wins the game.
The game requires at least two people, but there is no maximum number of players. Itâs more fun if there are at least five or six people playing, to get a good rhythm going.
Now that you know how to entertain yourself and your friends on your next road trip, visit Busbud and book your bus tickets!
Nice list, i love most of the games. Sometimes when i am bored i open this website and play bus games all ride long!
You forgot to mention the best gangster game! The best game for road trip for me is Ace Gangster 2 game .
I like the story game you shared where we alternate with statements of “fortunately” and “unfortunately.” I’m helping to find a charter bus service to handle the tour for my son’s school group next year. These tips should help everyone have fun on the bus, so I’m excited to use them when the time comes!

About the main element of bus games - the buses
Paragraphs above summed up everything necessary related to bus games, but, what actually the buses are? According to Wikipedia , A bus is a road vehicle designed to carry many passengers. Buses can have a capacity as high as 300 passengers. If we would look at the origin of the word "bus", it's probably clipped from the Latin adjectival form omnibus ("for all"). Conversely, full name for bus in French would be voiture omnibus = "vehicle for all". This name is assigned with a significant personality of bus transport - Frenchman Stanislas Baudry who started mass-transport service in 1823. At this time, a bus was a waggon pulled by horses which transport people from the city centre of Nantes to his spa establishment. Next development on the field of buses was driven by invention of new technologies and methods of propulsion - such as steam buses, electric buses (trolleybuses) and motor buses, quite similar to historical development of cars , only with one reason - electric buses survived in a mass production as trolleybuses thanks to different kind of energy transport and storage for their movement.
There are many types of buses developed specifically for certain purpose, environment and distances. We can find many similar concepts of buses regardless of location as well as specific busses for every country. At cities we can most often see convenient low-floor buses in single-decker and classic or articulated ('bendy') variant, alternatively quite unique bi-articulated buses designed for large passenger capacity. Some cities operate also open-top buses and double-decker buses. Outside cities, usually travel in buses with rigid chassis or low-floor buses in a smaller size. Historically buses capacity was extended with a passenger-carrying trailers, however most trailers today is used to increase cargo space, especially in a case of coaches designed for longer-distance travel to vacations.
Because of diversity of bus games, you have an opportunity to drive most current bus concepts. Which one is your favourite? Vote for it by playing a game with your favourite bus.

Our Review Process Â
The best portable travel games are compact and light enough to take on a road trip or flight, can be contained in a case, and are still fun after multiple rounds of play.
Size: Â Travel games shouldnât be large and heavy. They should be small and light enough to fit easily into suitcases and carry-ons.
Multiplayer: Games for two or more players are best, since the whole point of travel games is to keep everyone entertained. Â
Fun-factor: Travel games can help stave off boredom between activities, while youâre in transit, or during travel delays. So make sure you choose games that appeal across ages, interests, and have enough variety for the long haul. Â
Tips for buying games for travel
Size of the game
When it comes to the best travel games, size matters, whether you travel with just a carry-on suitcase or donât want to bulk out your checked baggage. Look for games that are contained in a case small enough to fit into a backpack. On road trips, you can get away with larger games, especially if youâre driving your own vehicle. Â
Game ratings and popularity
A gameâs ratings and popularity can give you a good idea for whether or not it will work for your needs. A sure-fire tip is to look for reviews by customers with similar travel styles and companions as your own. Â
Playersâ ages
It goes without saying, but youâll maximize fun by packing travel games that are appropriate for everyone in your group. Consider bringing a couple of gamesâone for spending time with the kids and another for adults. Â
Time it takes to play a round
When shopping for the best travel games, keep in mind that some people can take longer to finish a game than others. Consider your travel companionsâ attention spans and choose accordingly. Â
Frequently asked questions
Are there travel-sized board games?
Yes, many classic and unique board games come in travel sizes. Some even have travel-friendly modifications, such as magnets to prevent pieces from sliding off the board and carrying cases that keep everything contained. Â
How do you know if a game is good for traveling?
Some games are better suited to travel than others. Card games with a carrying case and board games that donât have too many loose parts (or are magnetized) tend to be good options for the road. What are the best travel games for an airplane?
Since space is limited on an airplane, look for games that donât take up more room than a typical airplane tray table. Youâll also want travel games that can handle turbulence and that you can quickly and easily pick up, in case you need to get out of your seat for a neighbor. Â
