Gravel Rides in Italy

The best bike rides along italy for your gravel adventure..

Gravel Rides in Italy

Gravel bikes are the new big trend in adventure cycling. Why? Because of the huge variety of routes they let you ride. With a versatile gravel bike and the right equipment you can build your riding itinerary the way you want. With a gravel bike, it’s easy to leave the tarmac and experience a real adventure!

Whether North to South or in the central regions, Italy offers infinite possibilities for those looking for a holiday to mix sports, adventure and the discovery of magnificent landscapes and cities. Here are some of the most beautiful bike trips you can take, highly recommended for all gravel lovers. From magnificent mountains, to endless white roads, and expansive hill ranges. The Bel Paese has countless dirt paths, ideal for trekking and also for cycling with a gravel bike, an MTB, or even an e-bike !

ITALY NORTH

This loop starts at Lake Iseo and crosses the vineyards of Franciacorta in a succession of paved climbs at gradients of up to 18%, as well as flats along the valley of the Oglio river. The route touches Val Trompia, reaching the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Stella with off-road climbs and steep ascents. The descents are also not to be underestimated, often taking you over dirt roads, stones, and roots. The route features plenty uphill sections, the most impressive being the one that leads to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Corno overlooking the Parco delle Torbiere and the entire Franciacorta. You can start the 115 km loop from any point on the track. Considering the steep climbs, our suggestion is to tackle the route with a light gravel bike, such as the Grail CF SL.

Recommended bike: Grail CF SL Franciacorta Gravel – Strade Brute

This gravel bike route is a real adventure through the Veneto region in north-eastern Italy, starting and ending in Piazzola sul Brenta. Covering 690 kilometers, you’ll pedal through the magnificent Venetian cities of Bassano del Grappa, Belluno, Conegliano, Treviso, Padua and Verona and experience the Venetian lagoon. If you wish to take part in the unsupported bike adventure event, now in its fifth edition, you’ll need to take the right equipment and bike bags. As for the bike itself, we recommend a light and fast carbon model, such as the Grail CF SLX. But you can tackle this route whenever you want. The path is 50% asphalt and 50% off-road, so it’s the perfect choice for bikepacking with a gravel bike. If you are time-limited, or if you want to have maximum fun on the technical sections, the new Grail:ON e-gravel bike with pedal assistance makes travelling the 700 km easier, and lets you carry more gear with you. Whether you’re preparing for the next edition of the event or you’re just going to ride with your friends, this is an absolute must.

Recommended bikes: Grail CF SLX, Grail:ON Veneto Gravel

The Via degli Dei is a historic road that connects Bologna and Florence through the Apennines, used since Etruscan times. It starts from the beating heart of Bologna, Piazza Maggiore, and alongside the characteristic arcades, climbs steeply up to the sanctuary of San Luca. Alternatively, you can follow a cycle path alongside the river Reno leading directly to Casalecchio. The route is mostly unpaved with a few singletrack sections and short asphalt parts. It is possible to split the itinerary into two or three stages, and if you opt for the shorter alternative, you can enjoy an overnight stay at the inn of the Passo della Futa, very popular with pilgrims. The path is physically demanding, with steep climbs and unpaved descents with some technical sections. It is possible to pedal the entire route with a gravel bike, if are careful to follow the bike-specific variant, available on specific guides and tracks. Alternatively, you can consider a hardtail mountain bike such as the Canyon Exceed, for more control in the downhills. From Florence, you can take a train back to Bologna – they run frequently, and you can, of course, take your bike with you.

Recommended bikes: Exceed, Grail Via degli Dei

ITALY CENTER

The Costa d’Argento is best known for its beaches – but if you explore the area with your bike, you’ll discover many other treasures that this land has to offer. The tour starts and ends at the Orbetello railway station and comprises multiple stages: the lagoon, the Etruscan-Roman city of Cosa, the charming medieval village of Capalbio, Lake Burano, and the Feniglia Forest Reserve. It is possible to follow route 23 - Orbetello - Capalbio e la Costa d'Argento of Fiab Grosseto. This loop route, a one-day ride, crosses the Maremma hills to arrive on the blue sea of the Argentario. The track includes off-roads, cycle paths and tarmac sections and you can easily ride it with a trekking bike with a suspension fork, such as the Pathlite, for maximum comfort even on off-road sections.

Recommended bike: Pathlite Maremma e Costa d’Argento Gravel

The permanent route of l’Eroica covers 209 km between the Terre di Siena through the Chianti, the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Orcia. On this tour, you’ll experience characteristic Tuscan landscapes with an ideal track for touring. You can split the route into 3, 4 or 5 stages, and it’s well signposted along the entire route with permanent signs. To take part to the historic cycling race it is strictly necessary to have a vintage bike, but if you decide to organise a bike tour to enjoy the magnificent hills of Chianti, you can also ride a road bike like the Canyon Endurace, at home on the white roads that have made the Tuscan countryside famous all over the world.

Recommended bikes: Endurace, Grail L’Eroica

Gravel Rides in Italy

ITALY SOUTH

This wonderful route crosses the Cilento National Park between the sea and the mountains. On The Silent Way, you will ride surrounded by silence, rugged nature, and barren landscapes: this is a true adventure. The route is suitable for everyone, just plan your stages and take at least a couple of weeks to complete the itinerary. 70% of the route is on tarmac, so it’s suitable for trekking bikes, or a gravel bike if you want to tackle steep climbs faster and easier – although these can be circumvented with short detours. More adventurous riders can face the trip with the Grail and a specific set of bags for bikepacking. Cyclists who wish to have even a few hours to relax and swim in the sea can opt for the Pathlite:ON, the motor assistance will allow you to travel the stages in less time and tackle the uphill sections with less effort. By mounting the specific bags on the rack, it is be possible to gear up with everything you need.

Recommended bikes: Grail, Pathlite:ON La Via Silente

The Apulian Aqueduct Cycle Route follows the route of the historical aqueduct pipes. 500 km long, it crosses three regions of Southern Italy and connects the most characteristic and fascinating places of Campania, Basilicata and Puglia. The route can be split into six separate stages, all with a distance between 70 and 30 km and elevation gain between 800 and 150 meters. The official route is still not completed; access is forbidden in many places. It is therefore necessary to plan separated stages; the recommended ones are Alta Irpina, Vulture Melfese, Alta Murgia, Valle d'Itria, Terra d’Arneo and the hinterland of Salento. This tour is perfect for a bikepacking adventure with our gravel bike, the Grail. If you prefer to travel with your bike and discover the beauties of the Mezzogiorno, you can choose an electric trekking bike equipped with a double battery for greater range and a practical rack to easily mount bike bags, such as our Pathlite:ON.

Recommended bikes: Grail, Pathlite:ON Apulia Aqueduct’s Bike Path

An epic bike route along the southern coast of Sicily, from Trapani to Siracusa. The itinerary will let you to discover Mediterranean landscapes, archaeological sites, small fishing villages and large towns, long sandy beaches and white cliffs. Pienza & Montefollonico

Highlights: Rennaissance Pienza, Bike fitting and test ride, Montefollonico

Meet and greet in Pienza. Known in Italy as "the purest renaissance town", Pienza is a remarkable example of Renaissance-era town planning. If you have even the least appreciation for beautiful architecture, it is a treat to stroll around its cobblestone streets. For those arriving early enough in the afternoon, you can go on a test bike ride to Palazzo Massaini and Montefollonico. Daily Distance: 25km (15 miles) - 12 km asphalt and 13 km gravel Elevation Gain: +558/-565 m (+1837/-1854 ft) Accommodation: Relais Il Chiostro di Pienza , or similar.

Montepulciano & Bagno Vignoni loop ride

Highlights: Val d'Orcia, Montepulciano, Monticchiello, Bagno Vignoni

Your tour starts with a loop ride from Pienza. Spring brings red poppy blossoms to the vibrant green wheat fields of Tuscany, and nowhere is the bloom more brilliant than the hills of the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As we pedal through these corridors of proud cypress trees, the scenery may look familiar from such films as Gladiator and The English Patient. Follow the gravel tracks off the beaten path through a timeless slice of Tuscany. You'll come to hilltop Montepulciano, the jewel of southern Tuscany, full of Renaissance palaces. Enjoy the lovely, picturesque lanes of this hilltop medieval town, before setting off on a breathtaking and challenging gravel section that brings you to Monticchiello, the quintessential Tuscan hill town. Back in the valley, the next destination is Bagno Vignoni, a thermal spa town that dates back to Roman times. Be sure to visit the Madonna di Vita Leta chapel on the way back to Pienza. Daily Distance: 52km (32 miles) - 17 km asphalt and 34 km gravel Elevation Gain: +872/-875 m (+2861/-2871 ft) Accommodation: Relais Il Chiostro di Pienza , or similar.

Cycle Pienza to Montalcino

Highlights: Pieve a Salti, the lands of Brunello wine, Montalcino, Lucignano d'asso

To get from Pienza to Montalcino we've selected the sections of L'Eroica called Lucignano d'asso and Pieve A Salti. You leave Pienza and after 6 km of pavement, the white roads begin toward Cosona and reach the little hamlet of Lucignano - a caffe espresso at Emporio bar is a must here! Once you reach the paved road you ride only one km and start the other Eroica gravel section known as Pieve a Salti, where you'll be surrounded by beautiful Tuscan rural landscapes. We recommend lunch in Buonconvento, where you'll prepare for the famous climb to the famed wine town of Montalcino, a total of 10 km (half paved, half gravel) through enchanting vineyards and wineries. Once in town we suggest a visit of the hilltop fortress dominating the valleys below, where you'll be provided breathtaking views of the routes you've cycled today. Daily Distance: 41km (26 miles) - 17 km asphalt and 24 km gravel Elevation gain: +855/-807 m (+2805/-2647 ft) Accommodation: Hotel Giglio , Vecchia Oliviera , or similar.

Cycle to Siena

Highlights: Castiglione del Bosco, Siena, Passo del Lume Spento

L’Eroica—meaning “The Heroic”—is a celebration of the golden age of cycling. The event takes place every October when thousands of hardened cyclists travel back in time to ride these gravel roads on primitive machines of the past. The heavy lugged-steel bikes with down-tube shifters and impossible gear ratios are no match for the red wine in the participant’s water bottles and the racer's spirit. Today, we’ll have our own taste of cycling’s heroic origins as we join one of the most beautiful gravel sections of L’Eroica. From the heart of Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany’s most celebrated wine region, ride to the top Passo del Lume Spento. Wonderful gravel cycling continues, arriving at Castiglion del Bosco, the biggest brunello winery and farm, which belongs to Ferragamo, the famous Italian fashion designer. Once in Bibbiano, you'll tackle the Piana section and and reach Murlo, another caffè stop must! Shortly you will face another legendary Eroica section to Radi, with some steep yet short ups and downs. At Ville di Corsano you deserve a light lunch. From here you have the last 12 km on secondary paved roads to marvelous Siena, one of the highlights of the tour. Daily Distance: 56km (35 miles) - 32 km asphalt and 24 km gravel Elevation gain: +1015/-1229 m (+3330/-4032 ft) Accommodation: Villa STR , or similar.

Gaiole in Chianti, the Eroica town

Highlights: Gaiole, Chianti vineyards, Siena

Today's destination is starting point of the Eroica race. After breakfast, head out into magical land of Chianti. Exiting Siena via an Eroica gravel section, making your way through wheat fields before entering the vineyards of this celebrated wine region. After reaching Pianella, you'll being a long, glourios section to Canonica a Cerreto, Vagliagli, always cycling through Chianti Classico vineyards, counting castles and old hilltop hamlets! You'll make it to Radda in Chianti for lunch time after cylcling gravel most of the day. From Radda, it's only 8 km to Gaiole still on the Eroica itinerary, including the breathtaking landscsapes near San Donato in Perano and Vertine. Daily Distance: 46km (29 miles) - 16 km asphalt and 30 km gravel Elevation Gain: +923/-874 m (+3028/-2867 ft) Accommodation: Castello di Spaltenna , or similar.

Chianti hills and Castello di Brolio loop ride

Highlights: Chianti Senese hills, Castello di Brolio, Castelnuvo Berardenga

On today's loop ride you'll explore the villages and hamlets of the Chianti Senese region. Start from "your" Spaltenna castle in Gaiole, reaching Castello di Brolio afer 10 km, a joyous cappuccino stop, after which you'll get on gravel sections of L'Eroica. Castelnuvo Berardenga, San Gusmé, and Villa a Sesta, are some of the small Tuscan hamlets you'll cross on today's glorious ride. On the return to Gaiole you'll have two options, including a challenging uphill to Castagnoli. Daily Distance: 54km (34 miles) - 44 km asphalt and 10 km gravel Elevation Gain: +1013/-1012 m (+3323/-3324 ft) Accommodation: Castello di Spaltenna , or similar.

Tour ends in Giaiole in Chianti

If you are feeling stronger and full of energy at this point, this morning you can tackle a 20km loop ride to Badia a Coltibuono, ending back in Gaiole where you will leave bikes. Or choose to end your tour after breakfast. Frequent buses to Siena are available, from where you can take fast train to your next destination. Daily Distance: optional 21km (13 miles) Elevation Gain: +395/-420 m (+1296/-1378 ft) PLEASE NOTE : The final itinerary, including hotels and/or activities described here, are subject to changes according to availability. Strade Bianche Bike Tour

A Week of White Gravel in Tuscany

Our Levels range from 1-4. Learn more .

Tour Highlights

Tuscany’s famed white gravel roads have gained notoriety among professional cyclists and fans alike because of one race—Strade Bianche. Between the undulating terrain, unpredictable spring weather, and unpaved gravel surfaces, the event has reached iconic status in its short history.

DuVine opens doors to the cycling-crazed enclave in and around Siena as only we can: with five-star accommodations just steps from the race village, rides along some of the most thrilling sections of the parcours one day before the pros , access to roadside action on race day, and the opportunity to join the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche.

All week long, you’ll ride our custom Cannondale Synapse Di2 bikes equipped with Vittoria Terreno Dry gravel tires and enjoy pro-level treatment before, during, and after your rides, thanks to a dedicated support team of guides, soigneurs, and mechanics.

Hand-rolled pici pasta, pecorino cheese, truffles, fava beans, artichokes, chestnuts, porcini mushrooms, Chianina beef, and cinghiale (wild boar)

World-famous wines made from native Sangiovese grapes including Brunello, Chianti Classico, and Vino Nobile; international blends known as Super Tuscans; and—in classic Italian fashion—espresso and cappuccino

Ciao Bella Toscana!

Your guides will meet you at the Chiusi train station for a transfer to our first hotel in the Tuscan hilltop hamlet of San Quirico D’Orcia. Enjoy a light lunch in town before getting fitted to your bike. We won’t waste any time hitting the famous white roads of Tuscany—the strade bianche —starting just three miles into our first ride. It feels like a return to the 13th century as we course along ancient paths, passing through the Orcia Valley and Pienza. Here, do as the Italians do and stop for a coffee in the town’s oldest bar, then return to our hotel on routes known only to local cyclists. Tonight we dine at our hotel and learn the true meaning of buon appetito .

Meals: Lunch / Dinner Destinations : San Quirico D’Orcia, Pienza Accomplished : 26 miles / 42 km (16 km of which are on gravel roads) , elevation gain: 2,253 feet / 687 meters Accommodations : Palazzo del Capitano

A Taste of L’Eroica Montalcino

L’Eroica—meaning “The Heroic”—is an event that celebrates the golden age of cycling. It takes place every October when thousands of hardened cyclists travel back in time to ride these gravel roads on primitive machines of the past. The heavy lugged-steel bikes with down-tube shifters and impossible gear ratios are no match for the red wine in the participants’ water bottles and the hardman (and hardwoman) mentality. Today, we’ll get our own taste of cycling’s heroic origins as we join one of the toughest gravel sections of L’Eroica Montalcino: a 14-kilometer climb where the maximum gradient is a challenging 12 percent. Ride through the heart of Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany’s most celebrated wine region, and stop for lunch at a winery owned by a passionate local and former pro cyclist whose business honors the region’s rich cycling history. We’ll continue through the town of Castiglione d’Orcia before returning to our hotel, where our soigneurs are waiting to reward us with well-deserved massages. Tonight, we’re invited to a very special farm-to-table dinner, prepared with ingredients that are crafted completely by local hands.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Buonconvento, Castiglion del Bosco, Castiglione d’Orcia Accomplished: 56 miles / 90 km (33 km of which are on gravel roads) , elevation gain: 6,400 feet / 1,951 meters Accommodations : Palazzo del Capitano

Strade Bianche Pro Race Recon

All the professional teams have arrived in Siena, ready to test their legs on tomorrow’s race course. We will do the same, previewing the final 54 kilometers of the men’s pro course which also appears on Sunday’s Gran Fondo route. Team cars and pro riders will cross paths with our peloton as we pass through the mythical Monte Sante Marie gravel section dedicated to Fabian Cancellara—the only rider to win the race three times. We arrive in Siena via the infamous Santa Caterina climb, emerging into the iconic Piazza del Campo where lunch is waiting. In the afternoon, our pro soigneurs will prepare our legs for the big cycling weekend ahead. Tonight, explore Siena on your own for dinner—your guides can share their favorite trattorias or where to find the best truffle dishes in town.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch Destinations : Asciano, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Siena Accomplished: 55 miles / 88 km (28 km of which are on gravel roads) , elevation gain: 5,206 feet / 1,587 meters Accommodations : Grand Hotel Continental Siena

All the Action of Strade Bianche Race Day

The excitement of race day is in the air! Wake up at the center of the cycling world and walk to see the women’s race depart, then mingle at the buzzing team buses before we take a spin of our own. It’s a short ride to lunch at our friend Serena’s house and in true Italian fashion, she’s spent days at the stove in anticipation of our arrival. This afternoon, witness firsthand the speed and fury of the Strade Bianche race, in which professionals like Tadej Pogačar, Wout van Aert, and Julian Alaphilippe battle over the same gravel roads we’ve been riding. We’ll practically touch the action as it speeds past Serena’s house— don’t be rattled if the pros take one of the steepest gravel sections a bit faster than we did. After the race breezes by, take a lift in the van to our hotel in the heart of Siena. Tonight’s dinner at the best pizzeria in town will fuel us for the challenge that awaits us tomorrow.

Meals:  Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Pieveasciata, Pianella Accomplished : 24 miles / 39 km, elevation gain: 2,007 feet / 612 meters Accommodations : Grand Hotel Continental Siena

The Gran Fondo Strade Bianche

Now that we’ve feasted on fine food and wine, tested our legs on some of the region’s precipitous climbs, and refined our technical skills on gravel roads, it all culminates in the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche. The annual big ride includes some of the most challenging sections of gravel in Bella Toscana! Wake up in the medieval walled city of Siena—our hotel is mere meters from where the legendary route begins and ends hours later, after the brutal climb up Via Santa Caterina and the finish in Piazza del Campo. After the race, we’ll regroup in the city center and have lunch before recovering at the hotel with another treatment from our soigneur. Tonight, reflect on a fabulous week of riding as we indulge in a celebratory dinner at one of Siena’s best restaurants.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Siena Accomplished (Medio Fondo) : 54 miles / 87 km (22 km of which are on gravel roads) , elevation gain: 4,176 feet / 1,273 meters (545 meters on gravel) Longer Option (Gran Fondo) : 86 miles / 139 km (55 km of which are on gravel roads) , elevation gain: 6,668 feet / 2,033 meters (1,285 meters on gravel) Accommodations : Grand Hotel Continental Siena

Arrivederci

Our last morning in Tuscany presents plenty of options: sleep in, savor a slow breakfast, or take a final stroll around Siena. Your guides will return you to the Siena train station, bidding you farewell before you depart for your next destination.

Meals: Breakfast Destinations: Siena, Chiusi

Strade Bianche of Tuscany

The Strade Bianche of Tuscany is truly something special due to the region’s rolling vistas and fine wines make this a must-see destination if you love gravel cycling. Strade bianche  is Italian for “white roads,” and it comes from the color of the dry limestone gravel that lifts into a fine white dust that lingers along the race course.

These white, dusted roads are home to one of pro racing’s biggest dates, with steep climbs and full-blown attacks at every bend:   Strade Bianche professional race

After the successful of our self guided Bike Tour in 2021 we decided to offer the guided version  selecting the more appropriate sections from  that race, from the Eroica itinerary that often coincide with Francigena path The Permanent Route  of L’Eroica is a unique experience that allows you to live the adventure of L’Eroica all year round,  anyway we offer the tour from March to November. Traditional L’Eroica course  starts in the town of Gaiole on the first Sundays of October, anyway we love the Montalcino spring edition.

Gravel Rides

G ravel is considered one of the hottest new style of bicycle travel. Why? Gravel riding is popular because of the variety of adventures you can do and it because it increases route options and finally our gravel routes have often zero cars on them.

The white gravel roads, strade bianchi , characteristic of the  Italian countryside, provide the unique character of our gravel rides. They are usually country lanes and farm tracks, called  strade bianche  or  sterrati  in Italian, twisting through the hills and vineyards of the  Chianti  region. Some of the dirt roads are flat, other sections include steep climbs and winding descents, testing riders’ climbing abilities and bike handling skills. Others like our Via Francigena are historic gravel rides that follow historic pilgrimage routes

How to Say It

Strada  is road in Italian but it’s   strade  “ stra -day” in the plural and  bianche  is “bee-an- kay ”. The term  strade bianche  is a poetic licence and locals call the roads  sterrati .

Our participation on The Eroica , the ultimate Gravel ride

At the end of the 8 day ride Vintage Tuscany and LEroica , we join over 2000 cyclists on the L’Eroica .   L’Eroica , which   means heroic , is an amateur  gran fondo  with a special twist of history, passion, traditional specialties and passionate cyclists from all over the world.  Participants  ride bikes that are at least 25 years old so it is retro fest of cycling. It’s also close to Italy’s “slow food” movement as the race takes time to appreciate the scenery and the  rifornimento  food stops supply chianti wine, bread and prosciutto.

The ride has soared in popularity and entries are now hard to come by but Ciclismo Classico every year has secured spots for all our riders. This once in a lifetime experience is an immersion into cycling’ s most beloved era of wool, steel and leather. Most cyclists dress up in retro kits, have bikes that are at last 25 years old, some come with bikes that are even much older.

Gravel riding takes you off the main roads and directly to your cycling adventure. Ciclismo Classico was born from a desire to show off parts of Italy by bicycle that were outside the radar of the local tourist destinations so our expansion into riding on.

Gravel biking lets us take that mentality one step further. You will leave the typical paths on well-traveled roads, to seek a new off-road adventure. And you’ll get to do it on a Bianchi Gravel bike.

Gravel Bike in the Dolomites

Gravel bike in the dolomites.

We offer off-road itineraries designed for gravel bikes.

In the Dolomites you will not find the Strade Bianche of Tuscany.

All our routes are made roughly 70% of gravel roads, 20% of mule-paths and singletracks, 10% of paved roads.

Some itineraries have some non-cycling sections and for a short while you will have to walk your bike . Sometimes is really necessary to pass from one valley to the next without loose all you have gained climbing. The higher, the better: you will fully enjoy the drama of Dolomite's peaks.

Use proper shoes , with a stiff sole but good for walking in off-the-bike sections (including to reach the bar of a mountain hut for istance).

Which gravel tire to cycle the Dolomites?

Your wheels will taste all sorts of things.

Fit tires with the widest section and most aggressive tread pattern possible. 700x45C & 650B/27.5x2.1 are both great solutions. Tubeless is highly recommended.

Extreme slopes, endless climbs, uneven surfaces: the ideal gearing for Gravel Bike in the Dolomites is undoubtedly Mullet. A mixed drivetrain, with a single chainring crankset in front and a rear derailleur and mtb cassette . A 38-tooth chainring and a 12- or 11-speed mtb cassette will make you ride better, especially if your gravel bike is carrying gear for a multi-day tour.

With 2X in front, always mount the cassette with as many teeth as possible compatible with your rear derailleur .

A gravel bike in perfect shape

The Dolomites are a very severe test for your gravel bike. Materials and components are put to the test.

It is essential that the bike is in perfect condition , with new brake pads, brake bleed done, tires with intact tread, chain and transmission checked by an experienced mechanic.

Carry a spare pair of brake pads, the repair kit, pump and a spare pair of inner tubes. Remember that bike shops are only found in the valley floors.

The Dolomites are not a land rich in water: the calcareous nature makes it porous and the water often finds sunlight only in the valley bottoms, when it forms streams of a certain flow.

Summer in the Dolomites can be very hot and it is important to pedal with at least 700cc of water.

In the high mountains there are springs and small seasonal streams fed by melting snow from where you can drink without fear, without filtering or boiling the water. During the gravel bike tours in the Dolomites we always indicate in the roadbook where the water is. All the refuges and huts touched by the tours serve excellent draft beer while the towns in the valley floor have fountains (with water) where you can refuel.

During the gravel tours in the Dolomites you will always find opportunities to stop and buy food .

There are numerous huts and refuges that offer restaurant services, while each town has its own supermarket, bakery, bar and restaurant.

In Trentino Alto-Adige the presence of these refreshment points is widespread, it is less so in Veneto and in Friuli Venezia-Giulia.

Always carry your favorite snacks, dried fruit, honey with you during your gravel bike day and refuel when you can so you never pedal without .

The season for gravel biking in the Dolomites is conditioned by the opening period of huts, refuges and hotels. The opening period varies from the end of May to the beginning of June and the season ends at the end of September, beginning of October .

Late April and May as well as the whole month of October and the beginning of November are ideal periods for cycling: just keep in mind that the only open restaurant services are located in the valley floors

Planning a gravel bike trip in the Dolomites means considering that you will be pedaling in a mountain environment at altitudes between 800 and 2400m . Snow can persist in the northern stretches until the beginning of June. From May to the whole month of July, short but violent thunderstorms are frequent in the second part of the day. Summer nights in the Dolomites are cool (10-15 degrees) and the days are hot and characterized by stable weather (20-25 degrees).

Consult the weather forecast on: www.meteo.provincia.bz.it for Trentino Alto-Adige wwwold.arpa.veneto.it/previsioni/it/html/meteo_dolomiti.php for Veneto

Wear proper outdoor gear . You’ll often cycle well above 2000mt and a summer storm can turn into hailstorm or snow. Ride safe . Remember that mobile phone signal is not available in many of the mountain areas crossed by our tours. Plan your day , bring food and drink with you. Respect the environment, respect pedestrian and cattle along the trails.

We mainly work with mountain huts but also inns and small family-run hotels . We offer structures with the best quality-price ratio where you can enjoy authentic experiences in a surprising environmental context.

If you have a tent on your gravel bike, we will tell you where to position yourself or in which cavity to sleep in the rock. We remind you that camping in the Dolomites is forbidden and Dolomiti Gravel does not encourage this wonderful expression of individual freedom. The use of open flames is absolutely prohibited.

Mountain Biking along the Sacred Routes of Tuscany

Testimonials.

This was a fabulous experience in every sense – majestic 13th century towns, incredible vistas, wonderful caring guides, amazing farmhouse accomodation, a world class chef, a genuine family with local knowledge and a generous spirit wanting you to feel and live the Tuscan way. We felt like we had the privilege to be brought into their world and didn’t want to leave. The cycling was outstanding and cooking lessons encouraging and informative – I highly recommend you do this!

Beautiful landscape, unique boutique hotels, great food and wonderful biking, basically describes our experience with Bike Tour Sardinia. We went from Alghero to Oristano, exploring the medieval towns and coast. Mauro arranged a relatively seamless and fabulous self-guided adventure, being consistently available, helpful and responsive. We had both e-bikes and standard, but for me, the e-bike added ease and the ability for further exploration and smiles. I highly recommend Bike Tour Sardinia as a way to explore this beautiful island.

Mauro and his excellent crew provided us a most memorable bicycle tour from Alghero to Gergei. He is truly a veteran and arranged excellent hotels, restaurants, food and wine tastings, cooking classes and a week cycling through back roads of gorgeous land and seascapes through this charming island. Delectable antipasti, the most succulent roast pig you’ll ever eat, seafood, lamb and lots of Vermentino were a gourmand’s dream. The level of professionalism could not have been greater. Beyond this, all three of these men were just exceptional people, sensitive to our needs as a group of 15 and very caring when small problems would occur. I cannot recommend this company more highly. Furthermore, Mauro is more than willing to arrange varios trips including self-guided brief or longer tours through much of Italy and nearby islands. The prices are very fair and the experience unforgettable! E un viaggio favoloso!

Thanks Mauro and team. We had an excellent trip. The organisation and attention to detail was beyond expectation. The selection of places we stayed in exceptional. I can highly reccommend Bike Tours Sardinia. Thanks again.

Exceeded expectations, beautiful coastline rides in Sardinia. Good communication from a member of the office staff meant we were confident everything was ready for our trip. Good standard throughout and we enjoyed the accommodation, especially the excellent food! Delicious food throughout at accommodations, lunches provided were superb! Electric bike was brilliant, much more power than the ebike I use at home. Hybrid bike was also good. Our tour leader was lovely; caring, sympathetic, enthusiastic and also a firm and decisive leader. She was very efficient and hard-working and made sure we had everything we needed for a wonderful holiday. She catered for the differing abilities of the group effortlessly and her knowledge and personality made cycling with her an absolute pleasure.

What an opportunity to see the Tuscan countryside in such an intimate way as cycling / mountain biking. How else could we get a guided tour – the best trails, lodging and meals all figured out for us?

When one guest lacked stamina the first day, Skedaddle got him an e-bike and for the rest of the days he did great. When another guest needed stitches a guide took her to the hospital in the van right away. These are examples of good service.

More about Italy bike tours

Italy is not only fantastic for biking — it’s considered one of the top cycling destinations in Europe, and for good reason. Here’s why:

  • Diverse landscapes: From forested hills and dramatic peaks to sparkling coastlines and charming villages, Italy offers a wide range of bicycle tours to explore on two wheels.
  • Variety of routes: Italy has something for everyone. You can find flat paths along the coast, gentle rolling hills through vineyards, or challenging mountain passes that test your limits.
  • Cycling culture : Italy has a rich cycling culture, and cyclists are welcomed and respected on the roads. You’ll often see locals out for a bike ride in Italy, and there are many cycling events and festivals held throughout the year.
  • Delicious food and wine : No cycling trip in Italy is complete without indulging in the delicious food and wine the country is famous for. After a long ride, you can enjoy a hearty pasta meal, a refreshing gelato, or a glass of local wine.

So, if you’re looking for your next cycling destination, add Italy to your bucket list.

Defining the “best” cycling location in Italy is subjective and depends on your preferences. However, some regions consistently top bucket lists highly due to their diverse landscapes, challenge-to-reward ratios, cultural richness, and epic scenery. Here are a few top contenders:

  • The Dolomites: This mountain range in northern Italy boasts iconic scenery with snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and challenging climbs that have tested professional cyclists for decades. Popular cycling routes in the Dolomites include the Stelvio Pass, considered one of the toughest climbs in Europe, and the Maratona dles Dolomites, a mass bike event with breathtaking views.
  • Lake Garda: This large lake in northern Italy is surrounded by mountains and offers beautiful scenery and a variety of cycling routes. You can choose from flat paths along the lakefront, rolling hills in the surrounding countryside, or challenging climbs like the Monte Baldo.
  • Tuscany: Located in central Italy, this region is known for its rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, and charming villages. Tuscany offers a variety of cycling routes suitable for all levels, from gentle family-friendly paths to challenging climbs like the Cipressa and the Poggio a Caiano.
  • Sardinia: Last but not least, this large island off the coast of Italy boasts a diverse landscape, from dramatic coastlines and rolling hills to rugged mountains and charming villages. Sardinia offers a variety of bike routes suitable for all levels, including scenic coastal paths, challenging climbs in the Gennargentu National Park, and historic routes that wind through ancient towns and archaeological sites.

The best single-day bike tour in Italy is, of course, a very subjective matter. Here are some of our top recommendations:

Tuscany Bike & Wine Tour: Immerse yourself in the rolling hills of Tuscany, famed for its vineyards and olive groves. Explore charming villages, savor delicious local food and wine, and enjoy breathtaking scenery. Tuscany bike & wine tours are generally moderate in difficulty and cater to a range of fitness levels.

Cortina d’Ampezzo E-Bike Tour : Discover the beauty of the Dolomites with the assistance of an e-bike. You’ll explore off-the-beaten-path trails, conquer moderate climbs with ease, and witness breathtaking mountain scenery. This tour is ideal for cyclists who want to experience the Dolomites’ beauty without tackling challenging climbs.

Cinque Terre: Manarola to Monterosso al Mare Tour: Experience the famed Cinque Terre coastline on two wheels. Cycle along the cliffside paths overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, taking in the colorful villages and dramatic landscapes. This route is moderate in difficulty with some climbs and is ideal for cyclists comfortable with moderate inclines and stunning coastal views.

If the V4Rs is the Formula 1 car in the Colnago stable, the C68 series is the Ferrari California.

It’s a succinct explanation from Colnago marketing consultant Manolo Bertocchi, invoking the legendary Italian automaker to describe the offerings of arguably the most famous Italian bicycle brand.

But it’s a comparison that aptly hits at the heart of why a lugged carbon construction frame, handmade in Italy down the street from the home of founder Ernesto Colnago, continues to exist when monocoque frames superseded this technology for most other bicycle brands years ago.

Colnago C68 Gravel Bike

The C68 exists to be the foil to Colnago’s all-out race bikes; it’s still high performance, but a little more focused on everyday riding — and arguably is better looking while doing it. It’s as much for enjoying a climb as it is being seen at the café afterwards.

And now, there are not one, not two, but three C68 models in existence as Colnago unveils the C68 Gravel, joining the Road and Allroad models. (Well, make it four models with the limited C68 Titanium version of the Road model).

The C68 Family Expands to Three

So Colnago just took the C68 Road and made it fit 42mm tires? Not so fast.

The C68 Gravel is a completely new frame made with its own unique tube set, Colnago head of research and development Davide Fumagalli assures me. In fact, the only shared thing between the Road, Allroad, and Gravel models is the seatpost. Each model is made from six pieces bonded together at Colnago’s factory just outside of Milan.

Colnago C68 Gravel Bike

(Side note: Colnago uses the same size post for each frame size, which might necessitate cutting it down a touch for riders on smaller frames)

The C68 family now consists of the Road model with 32mm of tire clearance; the Allroad with 35mm of clearance; and the Gravel with 42mm of clearance.

With each new model, from Road to Allroad to Gravel, the geometry becomes a touch more relaxed, and Colnago incorporates slightly more flex into the carbon build for comfort.

As you might expect, the weight increases marginally with each model: an extra 40 grams for the Allroad version, and an additional 20 grams on top of that for the Gravel version. A size 485 C68 Road weighs 925 grams, making the Allroad and Gravel versions in a similar size about 965 grams and 985 grams respectively.

Colnago points out that chasing the lowest weight is not the point of the C series. That’s more the wheelhouse of the V series road bikes raced by Tadej Pogačar and UAE Team Emirates, which is sub-800 grams.

So then, why choose the C68 series?

Why Carbon Lugged Construction in 2024?

A lugged carbon frame may seem antiquated, but it still holds some advantages over monocoque frames. Those benefits include durability, especially for heavier riders; custom geometry; and, this may be some bias on my part though I know I’m not alone, a more aesthetically pleasing look.

Colnago C68 Gravel Bike

Officially, Colnago lists the max rider weight for this bike at 110 kg (243 lbs). Fumagalli points out, however, that that’s only because other components on the complete Colnago builds max out at that weight; the frameset is far from the limiting factor in this equation. Riders north of 110 kg have a frame here that they could ride, so long as the wheels and other components they choose are built to match.

With this construction method, Colnago also has an advantage that few major bicycle brands can offer these days: custom geometry. Can’t find a size that’s quite right for you? Colnago will make you a one-off frame.

At the end of the day, Colnago is proud of being the last major Italian bike brand still making bikes in Italy. That’s reason enough to still do it, even if the brand admittedly sometimes loses money on the C68 series.

A Handlebar That Impresses

The C68 Gravel features a gravel specific version of the Colnago CC.01 integrated cockpit called the CC.01 Wide. It has a wider flare along with a 72.5mm reach, a 120mm drop, and a stem angle of 82 degrees.

Colnago C68 Gravel Bike

In a world of wide gravel bars, it offers just the right amount of flare, and I especially enjoyed the compact shape of the drops, which provide easy access to the hoods. The tops don’t have too long of an airfoil shape either, offering a comfortable place to rest your hands.

Colnago C68 Gravel Bike

It’s available in 80mm, 90mm, 100mm, 110mm, and 120mm stem lengths, but each handlebar width is set at 40mm.

Colnago C68 Gravel Bike

Should you want to swap in a different handlebar, that is possible, and there is an alloy stem available from Colnago as well.

Colnago C68 Gravel Bike

From a geometry standpoint, Colnago used its existing G3-X gravel bike as a jumping off point for the C68 Gravel. While the G3-X is meant to be a hard-charging gravel bike for racers like Colnago sponsored rider Nathan Haas . The C68 series is meant to be a touch tamer and more comfortable.

To that end, the C68 Gravel gets slacker with a 70.5-degree headtube angle on every size, and more stability from an increased BB drop and lengthened wheelbase.  Additionally, there is a shorter reach, more stack, and room for 42mm tires.

gravel bike tours italy

The C68 Gravel is available in five frame sizes, all with sloping geometry: 450, 480, 510, 540, and 570.

That’s down from Colnago’s peak of 22 (yes, really) frame sizes, which was confusing for customers and dealers alike and also meant enough overlap that many frame sizes could fit a single rider. If none of those five sizes quite fit right, the option for semi-custom remains, though Colnago says there are fewer orders these days.

There are 0mm, 15mm, and 30mm offset seat posts available, with 15mm being standard.

Builds, Pricing, and Availability

The Colnago C68 Gravel frameset (with seatpost and Colnago CC.01 Wide integrated cockpit) retails for $7,100 USD / €5,935 / £5,269

For now in the United States, the C68 Gravel will only be available as a frameset.

In Europe, these complete build options are available:

  • SRAM Red XPLR, ZIPP 303S wheels costs €12,010 / £11,100
  • SRAM Force XPLR with Fulcrum Rapid Red 500 wheels costs €8,690 / £8,100
  • Shimano GRX 822 1X with Fulcrum Rapid Red 900 costs €7250 / £6,900

There are two colors available at launch: HGGR (green) and HGBK (black). Both look great in person, and the black version includes a white accent on the headtube (on smaller sizes there is not enough visible tube available for the accent color). I wish there were more colors because great paint is a department where the C68 series really shines. However, the two paint options available at launch are still nice.

Groupset Compatibility: No 2x Mechanical

The bike is compatible with most groupsets except for one major exception: 2x mechanical groups — which essentially just rules out Shimano GRX mechanical 2x groups.

That still leaves the option for Campagnolo Ekar and SRAM Apex, which are both 1x; any 1x mechanical Shimano GRX groupset; GRX Di2 1x or 2x; and the entire family of SRAM AXS groups, both 1x and 2x.

Blockchain for Authentication

Colnago has made one of the best and simplest uses of blockchain technology I’ve seen, embedding an NFC tag on every frame that allows customers to register the bike as theirs and theirs alone on a public database.

It helps with authenticating frames, especially important for resale value (potential buyers can know instantly whether it’s a genuine Colnago product by scanning the tag), and especially for buyers of the brand’s one-off builds that sell at auction for multiple times more than standard Colnagos. Gold and diamond encrusted C68, anyone ?

It also helps Colnago prove that a specific bike was used by Tadej Pogačar to win a Tour de France stage, or that any other pro rider rode a specific race on that specific bike.

That’s valuable to a company so serious about its history that it has hired a historian who did a PhD on the brand, and is developing an archive with at least one image of every pro win ever on a Colnago.

First Ride Impressions

Colnago C68 Gravel Bike

I got a small taste for the C68 Gravel over two days of riding in San Diego, taking it for a 30-mile flat coastal cruise and a 30-mile gravel ride with a few thousand feet of climbing and plenty of single track punctuated by mud pits and water crossings.

Despite not being Colnago’s most performance oriented gravel bike, it still impressed me with its ride quality on and off road.

It’s expectedly tamer than the road-race bikes in Colnago’s fleet. Even still, it’s not out of place on fast rides. Did I feel bad casually passing hunched over triathletes with my knobby tires? A little. But the C68 Gravel certainly didn’t. In a straight line, it goes fast, and offers a pleasant stability while at it — just don’t expect it to be a super reactive bike in a sprint or attacking on a climb.

Off-road, this bike can handle a lot more than simple fire roads. Unleash it on single track and it can tear through moderately technical sections. Plus, for a gravel bike, it is lightweight on climbs.

Succinctly put, the C68 Gravel is fast, smooth, and stable. While it’s not specifically meant for racing, it would do plenty well in a competitive environment.

Where it lacks is in versatility. It has only one additional mounting point, on the toptube. The tires max out at 42mm, which is enough for most gravel riding, but less than I would expect for a brand’s non race oriented gravel bike. It’s definitely not meant to be a primary tool for adventure riding.

So in many ways, it’s a little bit stuck in the middle as far as gravel bikes go. That Ferrari California comparison comes to mind once more here: it’s cool, high performance, and more comfortable, but not the absolute highest performance machine out there. Oh, and it’s Italian through and through, with a price tag that reflects its exclusivity.

Colnago C68 Gravel Bike

I’ve ridden plenty of high-end bikes, and the Colnago C series continues to stand apart for me. It’s one of those bikes that I just like, both in the way it rides and looks.

The C68 Gravel is going to be for a self selecting crowd. If you try to think too hard about it, you’ll find plenty of reasons not to buy it. There are numerous really, really good gravel bikes out there for a lot less money than this one. There are gravel bikes that due to greater tire clearance and storage options will be able to take you to more places. Or ones that will be a little more reactive in race situations. But there is an elegance to the Colnago that other bikes can’t match.

“It’s a bike that’s made for the pleasure of riding,” says Colnago marketing consultant Manolo Bertocchi.

I couldn’t agree more, and I wish I had one in my fleet.
