The 16 Best Cruises to Book in 2023, According to T+L's Expert

Travel + Leisure hand-selected 16 different types of on-the-water adventures to consider in the year ahead.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

Cruising is in the midst of an epic comeback . Travelers are turning to trusted lines to help minimize the hassles of country hopping and maximize relaxation time in each destination. With 2023 poised to be a big year for both new and frequent cruisers — thanks in part to an abundance of new ships and itineraries — Travel + Leisure has hand-selected 16 different types of adventures to consider in the year ahead.

The Nile on Viking Osiris

Alastair Miller/Courtesy of Viking

Viking Osiris is the line’s newest on the Nile, with just 41 suites and staterooms, a pool deck, and cool Scandinavian design. The ship sails between Aswan and Luxor, with pre- and post-sail touring in Cairo included with the 12-day itineraries.

Alaska on Ocean Victory

The Alaska trips on Ocean Victory , a fuel-efficient, 93-cabin ship from American Queen Voyages, come with the opportunity to kayak past glaciers and spot bald eagles and grizzlies. The vessel, which first debuted in 2021, represents an evolution in ship design for American Queen, with its cutting-edge X-Bow design (which helps reduce fuel burn) and chic suites, including many with private verandas.

The Galápagos Islands on Quasar Expeditions’ Evolution

In June, Quasar Expeditions is offering a Galápagos cruise on the 32-passenger Evolution for children with autism spectrum disorder, hosted by an expert in supporting families with special needs. The trip, which departs June 24, is a seven-night expedition that takes in many of the most notable sites on the islands, with programming specially tailored for both kids and adults.

Cruising Antarctica on Silver Cloud or Silver Endeavour

Adrian Wolodarczyk/Courtesy of Silversea

Silversea gives Antarctica travelers the option to skip two days of sailing the often-rocky Drake Passage. Instead, they can fly in comfort over the waters separating South America from the continent, then hop aboard the 127-suite Silver Cloud and 100-suite Silver Endeavour for trips along the frosty coastline.

The Caribbean, South Pacific, and Australia With Windstar Cruises

Windstar has a series of 2023 itineraries on the 156-cabin Star Pride and 171-suite Wind Surf that hit yachty Caribbean ports like Jost Van Dyke, in the British Virgin Islands, and Anguilla. The small-ship line, which is known for both its sleek “Star Plus Class” ships and its classic vessels with their dramatic sails, also has an array of itineraries along the coast of Australia and in the South Pacific.

Cold-weather Cruises on Le Commandant Charcot

A game changer in lowering emissions, Ponant’s brand-new hybrid-electric Le Commandant Charcot can operate on less-carbon-intensive battery power and liquefied natural gas and has room for 245 guests. The game-changing ship, which has already hosted eclipse watchers on a trip to Antarctica and sailed to the geographic North Pole, also offers adventures in places such as Iceland and Svalbard.

Cruises Closer to Home With American Queen Voyages

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of American Queen Voyages

American Queen Voyages will offer the longest trips in the line’s history in 2023, with two 23-day river itineraries on the Mississippi and Ohio aboard the 123-stateroom American Countess . “The ship will sail more than 1,700 miles from Minnesota down the Ohio River and Upper Mississippi River , calling on more ports and offering more guided tours than ever before,” as T+L reported in August .

The South Pacific on Paul Gauguin

Just refurbished, the 165-cabin Paul Gauguin will be exploring the Pacific in 2023, with trips to the Cook Islands, Fiji, the Marquesas, and the Society Islands. The single-vessel brand was voted the very best small-ship cruise line in the World’s Best Awards 2022 , as T+L readers gave particularly high marks to the Paul Gauguin ’s on-board staff.

Mystery Cruising With Uniworld

Courtesy of Uniworld

Next year, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises will offer two nine-night “mystery cruises ,” with the European destinations revealed only as guests depart: similar trips in 2022 sold out. Travelers on the June 2023 trip will meet in Amsterdam, while the July 2023 sailing rendezvous in Nice, France — from there, the itinerary is anybody’s guess.

Expedition Cruising With Seabourn

Courtesy of Seabourn

Seabourn Venture , the luxury line’s first 132-suite expedition ship, launched in late summer with itineraries in northern Europe; trips in Japan, the South Pacific, and Antarctica are on tap for 2023. Seabourn Pursuit , which will be a sibling ship to Venture, is scheduled to arrive in 2023, the second in Seabourn’s growing expedition fleet.

Seeing Europe’s Gems by Small Ship

Slated to launch in the spring, the 228-passenger Scenic Eclipse II will visit ports from Dublin to Lisbon, as well as both polar regions, in 2023 and 2024. The innovative vessel, which is similar in design to Scenic Eclipse , will have luxurious suites complete with butler service and all sorts of extras, including helicopters (plural) and a submarine.

Visiting Wild Places With Fewer Impacts

Aurora Expeditions, whose newest vessel is the 71-cabin Sylvia Earle , guarantees that all operations are carbon neutral, pledging to offset all emissions. The newly launched ship, with its fuel-saving X-Bow design, doesn’t skimp on expedition necessities: guests on Antarctica expeditions can explore by Zodiac or snowshoe and even, when conditions allow, go scuba diving in polar waters or camping on the ice.

Solo Cruising With a New Line

Upstart cruise line Atlas Ocean Voyages offers all-inclusive fares on its two 98-suite vessels, and, in a departure from industry norms, the brand doesn’t charge solo travelers a single supplement. The line’s second ship, World Traveller , launched in November 2022 . It will sail nine-, 10-, 11-, and 12-night round-trips from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Antarctica through March 2023 before heading to the Mediterranean to hit Spain, France, and Portugal.

The Galápagos Islands on Celebrity Flora

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Another ship that sails the Galápagos, the Celebrity Flora , has 50 suites, many with large verandas, plus a stargazing deck and a fleet of comfortable tenders. Two itineraries are available, the first of which is a seven-night “northern loop” that visits the volcanic island of Santiago and has guests spotting red-footed Boobies on Genovesa Island, a place sometimes called Bird Island thanks to its famed animals. The line’s “outer loop” also includes plenty of wildlife watching, plus a stop at the less-frequented Daphne Island.

Doing Wine Country on Seadream II

SeaDream Yacht Club has two Wine Voyages in 2023, which include vineyard visits in Greece, Italy, and Spain and a winemaker-hosted dinner on the 112-guest Seadream II . The highly regarded intimate-ship line wins frequent accolades from T+L readers for its on-board service and well-appointed vessels.

Simple Flying

Inside jet2's massive summer 2023 expansion.

The British leisure airline announces new routes from 3 of its hubs.

Package holiday operator Jet2 yesterday announced its updated 2023 schedule with more destinations and more flights. More services, holidays, and destinations are now available from Bristol, East Midlands, and Glasgow. This announcement is in response to a significant increase in passenger demand for holidays in Europe.

Brand-new destinations for Summer ’23 include Girona, Malaga, Chania (Crete), and Santorini - all from the airline's bases. Additionally, a seventh based aircraft will operate at Bristol, East Midlands , and Glasgow to support this significant expansion.

In a statement, Steve Heapy, the CEO, said,

“We always knew that when international travel returned to normal, customers and independent travel agents would respond by flocking to book our award-winning flights and holidays.”

A clever business plan

Jet2, one of the UK’s most significant package holiday operators and leisure airlines, has an expansive network connecting the UK to Europe’s major holiday destinations. Jet2’s whole business model is to bring UK's population on holiday, and it has been succeeding at this for decades. With bases in Leeds, London Stansted, and Bristol, it knows how to make a holiday memorable.

Stay informed: Sign up for our daily and weekly aviation news digests.

Jet2 describes itself as “the UK’s leading tour operator.” Other holiday operators included the now-defunct airline Thomas Cook . Thomas Cook went into compulsory liquidation back in 2019, leaving Britons stranded abroad.

Recovering from the pandemic

Jet2 and Jet2holidays did not find the pandemic easy. Nor did other British airlines, for that matter. It temporarily suspended operations during 2020. In August of that year, it announced that it would be letting 120 pilots go due to the pandemic.

However, things at Jet2 are getting back to pre-pandemic levels. It has recently ordered more A321neos - bringing a change to its mostly Boeing fleet. Furthermore, Jet2 has also announced that it will be dropping its mask requirement onboard.

Jet2 is seeing massive growth in demand. This announcement proves that Britons want to fly again.

“We are experiencing strong demand across all seasons, and with Summer 23 looking so popular, we are in the position to respond with a massively expanded programme from Bristol, East Midlands and Glasgow Airports.’

Jet2.com and jet2holidays announce major expansion for summer 2023.

Jet2.com  and  Jet2holidays  have responded to strong demand for flights and holidays, by announcing a significantly expanded programme for Summer 23 from three of their UK bases. The companies are today announcing more flights, more holidays and brand-new destinations for next summer from  Glasgow ,  East Midlands  and  Bristol Airports , with an additional aircraft coming into operation at each of the three bases to support the extension.

The leading leisure airline and UK’s leading tour operator to many destinations across the Mediterranean and Canary Islands have added  brand-new Girona   (Costa Brava)  from  Glasgow Airport, Malaga  and  Chania (Crete)  from  Bristol Airport ,   and  Santorini  from  East Midlands Airport.  Overall, the companies are offering customers and independent travel agents a choice of 52 sunshine destinations from across their network of ten UK bases for Summer 23.

Strong demand for flights and ATOL protected package holidays means  Jet2.com  and  Jet2holidays  are significantly expanding their existing programmes from the three bases to sunshine favourites such as the  Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Mainland Spain, Greece, Malta  and  Turkey  for Summer 23 too – giving customers and independent travel agents even more choice and flexibility when booking their next getaway.

Jet2.com  and  Jet2holidays  have reported the unlocking of enormous pent-up demand from holidaymakers on the back of international travel returning to normal. The assurance of an ATOL protected package holiday is also proving to be popular with customers, as is booking through a reputable provider that has looked after customers during the pandemic.

Jet2.com  and  Jet2holidays  have been widely praised and commended for their handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, including swiftly refunding customers who have had their flights or holidays cancelled. Most recently, both companies were once again awarded with  Which? Recommended Provider  status for the way they have looked after customers and independent travel agents. The Institute of Customer Service recently ranked  Jet2holidays  as the best UK tour operator and  Jet2.com  as the best UK airline for providing customer service.  Jet2.com  and  Jet2holidays  were also ranked as the  Best Travel Firms for providing refunds  according to a survey of respondents by Money Saving Expert, and the UK Civil Aviation Authority has recognised  Jet2.com  as the only UK airline to provide prompt refunds.  Key Summer Sun highlights for 2023 from  Glasgow, East Midlands  and  Bristol Airports  include:

As such, we are experiencing strong demand across all seasons and with Summer 23 looking so popular, we are in the position to respond with a massively expanded programme from Bristol, East Midlands and Glasgow Airports. Such an expansion would not be possible without customers choosing to travel with us in huge numbers, so I would like to sincerely thank our customers and independent travel agent partners for their continued support. I can promise them that our unwavering focus will continue to be on delivering the VIP customer service that has made such a swift and significant impact.”

U.S. travel alert: Do not travel to this Caribbean nation, popular spot for cruise ship stops

Haiti jailbreak

The State Department is warning travelers not to go to the Caribbean nation of Haiti even as American military forces are being brought in to shore up security at the U.S. Embassy in Port-Au-Prince.

The Travel Advisory for Haiti remains at level four, meaning all travel to the country is discouraged. Other level 4 countries include Russia, Syria and Burkina Faso.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous. We are aware that there are few or non-commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them,” the US Embassy said in a statement issued this week.

Travelers who are in Haiti are advised to avoid crowds and being outside after dark, keep a low profile and be aware of their surroundings.

Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic sharing the island to the east. The Dominican Republic is under a level 2 advisory with visitors urged to exercise increased caution.

The U.S. military presence will protect the embassy and allow non-essential American personnel to leave the area, which has been taken over by violent street gangs, the AP reported.

A do-not-travel alert for Haiti was issued in July 2023 for what the State Department described as “kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and poor health care infrastructure.” Later that month, the U.S. ordered all family members of U.S. government employees and non-emergency personnel to leave the country. American government personnel have been limited to only confined areas around the Embassy and are not allowed to walk in Port-au-Prince, use any public transportation, visit banks or ATMs, drive at night or travel between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Despite the security issues, which included a mass prison break last week, cruise ship lines continue to stop in the country.

Royal Caribbean ships continue to call on Labadee, the cruise company’s property located on a peninsula about six hours drive away from Port-au-Prince, CNN reported. The area is only available to ship guests and visitors do not leave the resort. No security issues have been reported at the resort.

The company said it is monitoring the situation in Haiti.

“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area. At all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore and follow all State Department guidelines. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told CNN.

Travel trends for 2023

Make sure you’re on the travel front foot in 2023 by checking out these hot-off-the-press trends…

If you like travel and you like trends, then this is the perfect place for you! The clever bods at ABTA have done some heavy digging to predict what plans you lovely holidaymakers have on the cards for next year in their Travel in 2023 report. From ‘hibernation’ stays to savvy spending, here’s the lowdown on next year’s biggest holiday hits…

1. Get great-value all inclusive

Yep, we all know all inclusive is a fab way to make your money go further. But with so many of us feeling the pinch right now, it’s more popular than ever, because it means you can stay in control of your costs. The real beauty of it is that what you pay upfront is pretty much the total price of your holiday – no need to take extra spends while you’re away thanks to three meals a day, drinks and snacks all rolled into the price. And you can choose budget or blow-out – the range of accommodation and destinations on offer really is varied, so there’s something for every type of sun (and saving) seeker.

2. Say hello to the ‘hibernation' holiday

Which do you prefer – gloomy grey skies or bright blue ones? Yep, we thought so! It’s no wonder then that more and more of us are looking to ditch the drizzle and head south to sunnier climes to recharge our batteries over the winter months . And lingering for a little longer is also thought to be a key trend for the season ahead. Plus, the rise in remote working means that more people have the flexibility to pack up their laptops and work from warmer spots too! New to winter sun? How about the colourful and classic Canary Islands ? Maybe the Costa del Sol’s mix of modern attractions and authentic flavours? Outdoorsy types, make it the lush island of Madeira for a trip with a twist. And Turkey is always a good idea in our book…

3. A slice of escapism

One of the wonderful things about a holiday is that it can offer a much-needed change of scene. And with the mounting pressures of everyday modern life, people are looking to get away to improve their wellbeing more than anything else. Holiday heavyweights such as Spain , France , Greece and Italy have been firm favourites for years, but it looks like many of you sun-seekers are set to stick to these hotspots thanks to their familiarity, comfort and ease. Sun, sea and simplicity = a great way to switch off.

4. The early bird catches the worm

After a turbulent few years, one of the last things we want to miss out on again is our well-deserved holiday. Which is why ABTA’s research shows a high level of early bookings. Many of you are locking in the price to protect it against any future hikes in cost, as well as making sure you have something in the diary to look forward to. It also means you can spread the cost into manageable payments to suit you. You can even be super-organised and get your Summer 2024 holiday sorted!

5. Conscientious travel

They say it pays to plan, and when it comes to holidays, it really does. And that’s what a lot of us are saying we’re going to do more of next year, just for that added peace of mind. But there are companies who can do that for you, which is why the good old package holiday is proving to be more popular than ever. Trusted travel experts, great-value inclusions, everything in one place and being kept in the loop are just a few of the many reasons why booking with an ABTA-protected package holiday pro is a no-brainer.

Since their releases on the same day in July, Barbie and Oppenheimer have dominated the box office, the awards circuit, and countless essays and op-eds. At the Oscars on Sunday, Oppenheimer is expected to sweep most of the major categories, including Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey, Jr.), and Best Director (Christopher Nolan), and Best Picture.

But even with those two blockbusters— Barbie grossed $1.4 billion worldwide and Oppenheimer was just shy of $1 billion—there were still plenty of hours left in the year for other entertainment. And if Netflix’s annual engagement report reveals anything, it’s that many people spent an astronomical amount of time watching Adam Sandler movies.

Since signing his first $250 million four-picture deal with the streamer in 2014, the 57-year-old Sandler has starred in eight movies for Netflix and produced several more through his Happy Madison production company. The majority of his back catalog of comedies are now licensed to the platform as well. In the first six months of 2023 alone, Netflix subscribers spent more than 500 million hours watching Sandler’s movies.

Or, as Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos explained when he re-upped the collaboration in 2020, “There’s no such thing as too much Sandler.”

Accordingly, Netflix has rewarded the prolific funnyman with not only one of the most lucrative contracts in the entertainment industry, but one with enormous creative freedom. Sandler’s three movies in 2023 included Murder Mystery 2 with Jennifer Aniston (who is ranked No. 6 this year), filmed in Paris and Hawaii as is his “ paid vacations ” custom. He also released You’re So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah starring his wife and daughters, and the animated movie Leo . Combined with his 44 stand-up comedy shows across the country, Sandler earned an estimated $73 million last year (after paying fees to his agent, manager and lawyer). It’s enough to make him the highest-paid actor of 2023 by a comfortable margin.

DON’T MESS WITH THE SANDMAN

For the first half of 2023, netflix viewers streamed more than 500 million hours of adam sandler movies. here’s what they like to watch.

In total, the 10 highest-paid stars combined to earn $449 million in 2023. They come almost exclusively from movies, rather than television, thanks in part to the writers’ and actors’ strikes that shut down Hollywood for half the year and delayed (or shortened) a number of TV seasons, and partially due to the now decades-long precedent that top movie stars can command up to $20 million up front for a single movie plus a percentage of its profits.

In the long run, starring in a hit movie at the box office remains Hollywood’s golden ticket. Unlike Netflix, which pays actors a premium fee up front and buys out their back-end profit participation over the next two years, a hit theatrical movie can continue to generate money in perpetuity—meaning actors with profit participation have no cap on the amount they can ultimately earn.

For example, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the stars of Barbie , are ranked No. 2 and No. 4 respectively on this year’s top 10 based solely on their estimated earnings from box office, video on-demand and the movie’s first streaming window. Their total compensation for starring in a cultural phenomenon will be considerably higher.

“I promise, Margot Robbie will be receiving Barbie checks for the rest of her life,” says one agent.

Robbie’s success is an outlier in another way. At 33, she is the youngest person on the highest-paid actors list by a decade, with the average age of the other nine north of 52. Older actors benefit from decades of residuals from past hits—such as Aniston with Friends —and also because Hollywood salaries are established by precedent, meaning the going rate for top stars is expected to match or rise from whatever they made for their last picture.

This grandfathering of salaries often makes it difficult for younger actors to break into the upper echelon. The same is true for actors of color, of whom only one is represented in the top 10 for 2023 (Denzel Washington at No. 10). Admittedly, it was a year in which many of the perennial highest-paid Black actors did not release a major movie. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson focused on his entrepreneurial endeavors such as Teramana tequila and the XFL, while his frequent on-screen collaborator Kevin Hart devoted more time to his stand-up comedy. And Will Smith, once the king of summer blockbusters, was still rehabbing his image in the wake of the 2022 Oscars slap . Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson did most of their work on streaming services, where upfront fees are high but potential upside is capped. Still, blockbuster movies fronted by Black, Asian and Hispanic actors remain few and far between.

“The bottom line is, Hollywood is still a white-dominated industry,” says Darnell Hunt, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost at UCLA and the author of the Hollywood Diversity Report. “There are a few actors of color who can command those salaries, and they’ve established a track record to command that. But the problem is, how many actors have been given the opportunity to develop that track record?"

Looking at the current release calendar, it’s quite likely that 2024’s ranking of the highest-paid actors will look very different. Most movies take years to develop, so while Robbie, Tom Cruise (No. 3 this year), and Leonardo DiCaprio (No. 7) set off to their next projects, 2024’s theatrical slate will feature Smith in Bad Boys 4 , Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3 . Several members of the impressive young cast of Dune 2 are also fronting multiple movies in the coming year, including Zendaya, Austin Butler and Anya Taylor-Joy. Plus, blockbuster TV shows like Yellowstone , Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Bear will have stars in the earnings mix.

Beyond the hefty salaries, what’s truly been earned by this year’s highest-paid stars is greater power within the industry, particularly the ability to negotiate for even more favorable deal terms on their next project. In an industry where pay can rise or fall based on each performance. this list represents a snapshot of who has the most leverage in Hollywood in 2024.

1. Adam Sandler • $73 million ($97 million gross)

In the first three months after Murder Mystery 2 was released on Netflix, the streamer reported that it was watched for a total of 173 million hours across the world and ranked in the Top 10 in 90 different countries. The sequel was part of a very busy year for the Sandman, who did more than 40 stand-up comedy tour dates in 2023 to go with three Netflix film projects.

2. Margot Robbie • $59 million ($78 million gross)

The cultural phenomenon that was Barbie took off last July and never really slowed down, grossing $1.45 billion at the worldwide box office and untold millions more in licensing and partnerships. As both the producer of the movie and its star, Robbie cashed in on roughly 12.5% of all back-end profits, which Forbes estimates will more than $60 million. Her now red-hot production company LuckyChap was also behind last year's much-buzzed-about satire Saltburn , and in February Robbie signed a new exclusive first-look deal with Warner Bros., the studio behind Barbie .

3. Tom Cruise • $45 million ($53 million gross)

The 61-year-old action star not only defies conventional wisdom when it comes to his outrageous stunt work, but also the evolving norms around how an actor gets paid. Cruise is one of the last, if not the very last, movie star who can still command the vaunted "first-dollar gross" deal, meaning he gets paid a percentage of box office and other revenues beginning the day it’s released, before the studio even recoups its money. In 2023, he cashed in on the latest Mission: Impossible movie and continued receiving streaming and on-demand profits for 2022's Top Gun: Maverick . And studios still clearly want to be in the Tom Cruise business—in January, he signed a new development deal with Warner Bros.

4. Ryan Gosling • $43 million ($50 million gross)

He may be just Ken, but the supporting role in the year's biggest movie was good enough for an Oscar nomination and one of the biggest paydays of the 43-year-old Gosling’s career. As an added bonus, his power ballad from the movie, “I’m Just Ken,” has been streamed over 100 million times on Spotify.

4. Matt Damon • $43 million ($50 million gross)

Many around Hollywood are rooting for Affleck and Damon's upstart Artists Equity studio to succeed, given its promise to help crew members and other below-the-line talent share in movies’ profits. Their first project Air —which starred Damon and was directed by Affleck—sold to Amazon before it ever went into production for an estimated $130 million. That figure was well above the movie's budget, ensuring there would be plenty of money to go around. In addition, the 53-year-old actor took a mere $4 million salary for his supporting role in Oppenheimer , far below his normal rate, in exchange for a small slice of the movie’s substantial profits.

6. Jennifer Aniston • $42 million ($56 million gross)

Friends residuals ensure that the artist forever known as Rachel Green doesn’t have to “go get one of those job things” ever again—yet the 54-year-old actress continues to star in both TV and movies. Aniston reportedly makes as much as $2 million for acting and executive producing each episode of The Morning Show on AppleTV+, and appeared alongside Adam Sandler in Murder Mystery 2 for Netflix, all while promoting brands like Uber Eats, Pvolve Fitness, Vital Proteins, and her own haircare line, LolaVie.

7. Leonardo DiCaprio • $41 million ($48 million gross)

The 49-year-old Oscar winner may have been snubbed by the Academy for his performance in Killers of the Flower Moon , but he’s doing just fine on the balance sheet. His starring role in the Martin Scorsese epic included a hefty salary as well as a buy-out of his theatrical profit participation once the movie hits AppleTV+.

Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP

7. Jason Statham • $41 million ($48 million gross)

Statham has been throwing punches, kicks and quips at every man, megalodon or Rock in his path for the last 20 years, and the 56-year-old actor’s earning power has never been higher. In 2023, he fronted three major big-budget franchises— Fast X , Meg 2: The Trench and Expend4bles —plus the Guy Ritchie spy caper Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre . And he’s currently the star of the highest-grossing movie of 2024, The Beekeeper .

9. Ben Affleck • $38 million ($45 million)

When he’s not busy hawking donuts and plugging his new boy band in commercials for Dunkin’, Affleck serves as CEO of the studio startup Artists Equity (to Matt Damon’s chief creative officer). The 51-year-old multihyphenate directed and co-starred in Air , which grossed $90 million at the box office before moving to Amazon Prime Video.

10. Denzel Washington • $24 million ($28 million gross)

Tom Cruise isn’t the only sixtysomething movie star who can open a movie. The third installment of the Equalizer franchise was released in 2023, with all three entries crossing $190 million at the box office for one reason: Denzel Washington. In addition, the two-time Oscar winner’s robust back catalog going back nearly 40 years also produces a steady stream of cash each year for the 69-year-old actor.

METHODOLOGY

Estimations were calculated through interviews with agents, lawyers, managers, executives and industry experts, as well as data sources such as IMDBPro and Polestar. The figures represent pretax earnings for the calendar year 2023, minus fees for representation – 10% to agents, 10% to managers and 5% to lawyers, per industry standard, although some actors do not have all three.

Actors were credited for compensation on projects in the year they were released, despite the fact that often up front fees are paid when a movie is filmed, which could be years in the past, and back end participation is often paid several years into the future.

Additionally, the ranking only includes earnings related to entertainment—acting, producing, directing, or other forms of performance (such as stand-up comedy). Entrepreneurial endeavors not related to entertainment, such as beauty or spirits brands, were not counted.

Is it safe to travel to Haiti right now? What travelers should know

do jet2 do cruises 2023

The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Haiti amid fresh gang violence in the country, which declared a state of emergency last week.

While neither the warnings nor violence are entirely new – Haiti has been a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination in State Department travel advisories since even before the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse – a spate of recent high-profile attacks, including an attempt by armed gangs to seize control of the country’s main international airport, has sparked renewed urgency.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. Embassy in Haiti said in a security alert issued Sunday. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is severely limited.”

The U.S. military stepped in to airlift American personnel “into and out of the Embassy” to augment security, U.S. Southern Command said Sunday in a statement to USA TODAY. Meanwhile, U.S. citizens in Haiti can fill out crisis intake forms and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program program for updates.

Here’s what airlines and cruise lines are doing about trips to Haiti:

Haiti violence: Military airlifts American personnel out of embassy as Haiti spirals into violence

Are there direct flights to Haiti?

Three U.S. airlines typically operate direct flights to Haiti: American, JetBlue and Spirit. However, all three have temporarily suspended service and issued travel waivers for the Caribbean destination.

◾ American Airlines customers with flights scheduled to, through, or from Port-au-Prince (PAP) through March 15 may modify flights without paying change fees. Changes must be made by March 15 with the same origin and destination cities as the original booking.

◾ JetBlue Airways is waiving change and cancellation fees for travelers with flights scheduled to and from Port-au-Prince through March 22. Customers must rebook by March 27.

◾ Spirit Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences on travel to, from, or through Cap Haitien (CAP) and Port-au-Prince through April 15. Travelers should rebook by April 30. After that, the airline said change fees would still be waived, but fare differences may apply.

Do cruise ships still go to Haiti?

Royal Caribbean and its sister line Celebrity Cruises stop in Labadee, Haiti , a private destination about six hours away from Port-au-Prince by car.

According to Celebrity’s website, it doesn’t look like the line has any sailings scheduled there until fall, but Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas all have stops scheduled in Labadee over the next month. So far none have been canceled.

“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area, and at all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly.”

The cruise line is aware of the travel advisory and has private security in the area. Only employees and guests are allowed on site. Guests are not allowed to leave the resort, partly for their safety.
