These Holiday Getaways Come With Private Chefs so You Can Actually Relax This Year

Sign us up.

private chef trip

While some people love hosting holiday celebrations for friends and family, it's undeniably a ton of work to prepare for the festivities — especially if you plan on cooking by yourself. So this year, rather than take on the burden, why not book a getaway? Especially one that comes with a private chef, so you can enjoy a gourmet meal that you don't have to cook.

That's an actual possibility if you book a stay via Edge Retreats , a vacation rental platform for some of the most over-the-top villas around the world. Here, discover two vastly different properties — each of which comes with a private chef — to cater to all different kinds of travelers, whether you're looking for a glacial retreat in Alaska or something a little more far-flung (say, a Turks and Caicos getaway).

Hawksbill Estate, Turks and Caicos

Craving a beach retreat for the holidays? Head to Hawksbill Estate in Turks and Caicos. Yes, the eight-bedroom manse is staffed by a private chef to cook all your meals, but the real star of the show is the white sands of world-famous Grace Bay , which run right up to the property. There are also two pools, a hot tub, a movie theater, and a tennis court. A beach escape might not offer you a white Christmas, but what better place to spend the holidays with your family?

Sheldon Chalet, Denali's Ruth Glacier, Alaska

For a truly unique holiday experience, consider venturing out into the wild, on the Ruth Glacier. That's where you'll find Sheldon Chalet , a five-bedroom villa, deep in the Alaskan wilderness . The rate for this remote property includes all meals cooked by a private chef, not to mention gear for the extreme environment outside. Professional guides will take you on excursions — hopefully you'll be able to see the Northern Lights.

For more holiday season vacation rental options, visit Edge Retreats' website .

Hiring a Private Chef for an Unforgettable Vacation

Are you planning a vacation but dread the thought of staying in a hotel? If so, you’re not alone. Nowadays, more and more people are opting for vacation rentals instead of traditional hotels. And there are plenty of good reasons why.

Vacation rentals offer more space, privacy, and amenities than a hotel room, which can be especially beneficial if you travel with kids. Plus, they are usually equipped with kitchens, so you can cook meals instead of always eating out.

Another great reason to consider a vacation rental is that you can often hire a personal chef to cook for you. A personal chef can make your trip more relaxing and enjoyable, as you don’t have to worry about food planning or cooking. They can cook whatever you like, accommodate any dietary restrictions, and even help you plan your meals, allowing you to make the most of your time exploring your destination.

Not only will having a private chef make your vacation more relaxing and enjoyable, but it will also be an incredible culinary experience. You’ll get to sample local dishes you would never have found on your own, and you’ll have the opportunity to learn about new ingredients and cooking techniques.

If you’re interested in hiring a private chef for your next vacation, read on for more information.

Hiring a private chef can make your vacation more enjoyable

When planning a romantic getaway, the last thing you want to worry about is what to cook for your partner. After all, part of the appeal of a vacation is being able to relax and enjoy each other’s company without the stresses of everyday life. That’s where hiring a private chef comes in. A personal chef can take care of all the meal planning and preparation, so you can focus on spending quality time with your partner. They can also customize the menu to suit your dietary needs and preferences, ensuring you both enjoy every meal. In addition, a private chef can add a touch of luxury to your vacation, making it truly unforgettable.

How to hire a private chef for your vacation rentals

You’re finally taking that dream vacation you’ve been planning for years. You’ve rented the perfect villa by the beach, and you can’t wait to spend lazy days lounging by the pool with a good book. But there’s one detail you haven’t yet planned – FOOD. Sure, you could dine out every day, but after a few days, you might start to crave a home-cooked meal. Luckily, it’s easy to find and hire a private chef for your vacation rental. Here are a few tips to get you started.

First, decide what kind of food you’d like to eat during your vacation. If you’re looking for gourmet dining experiences, you’ll want to look for chefs specializing in fine dining. However, if you’re looking for simple, home-cooked meals, then any experienced cook should be able to meet your needs.

Next, determine your budget. Be realistic about what you can afford to pay for food during your trip. Once you know how much you’re willing to spend, start searching online for chefs in your area who fit your budget and cuisine preferences.

Finally, don’t be afraid to negotiate. Chefs are usually open to negotiating their fees, so don’t hesitate to ask for a discount. With these tips in mind, finding and hiring a private chef for your vacation rental should be a breeze.

What to expect from a private chef you book for your vacation rentals

A private chef can be a great addition to your vacation rental. They can take care of meal planning, grocery shopping, and cooking, so you can focus on relaxing and enjoying your time away. But what should you expect from a private chef? First, they should be able to work with you to create a menu that suits your tastes and budget. Second, they should be able to shop for groceries and prepare meals promptly and efficiently. Third, they should be able to clean up after themselves, so you don’t have to worry about the kitchen being a mess for the property owner/manager when you leave.

Also Read: 5 Tips to Plan a Perfect Get-Together

The benefits of having a private chef on your vacation rentals

If you’re looking to add an extra touch of luxury to your vacation rental, consider hiring a private chef. A personal chef can provide you with gourmet meals tailored to your specific dietary needs and preferences, ensuring that you have a memorable dining experience. In addition, a private chef can take care of all the hard work involved in meal planning and preparation, freeing you up to relax and enjoy your holiday. And because personal chefs can often source ingredients at a lower cost, they can also help keep costs down.

So, whether you’re looking to impress your partner or treat yourself, a private chef can help make your vacation rental feel like a true home away from home.

Questions to ask when hiring a private chef during your vacation in a rental property

If you’re planning a vacation and considering hiring a private chef, there are some basic questions you’ll need to ask to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

First, be sure to ask about the chef’s training and experience. You’ll want to ensure they’re qualified to prepare the type of food you wish to have.

Next, ask about their availability. You’ll need to make sure they’re able to cook during the dates of your vacation.

Finally, don’t forget to ask about their rates. Be sure to get an estimate of the total cost before making any final decisions.

By asking these questions upfront, you can be sure that you’ll hire a private chef best-suited to your needs.

Tips for working with your private chef during your vacation on a rental property

  • Get to know your private chef before your vacation – If you’re spending a week or more in a rental property, getting to know your personal chef beforehand is a great idea. This way, you can discuss any dietary restrictions or preferences, and they can create a custom menu that everyone will enjoy.
  • Communicate with your private chef throughout the vacation – Once you’re on vacation, communicate with your private chef regularly. Tell them how you’re enjoying the food and if there are any changes you’d like to make to the menu. They should be able to adjust accordingly and make sure that you are happy with the meals.
  • Don’t hesitate to try new things – A private chef is an excellent opportunity to try fresh foods that you might not otherwise have the chance to taste. However, be sure to ask about the ingredients in each dish if you have a food allergy.
  • Enjoy yourself! – Ultimately, the most important thing is to relax and enjoy yourself on vacation. Your private chef will take care of everything else, so all you need to do is sit back and savor the delicious meals they prepare for you.

Hiring a private chef for your vacation in a rental property with your partner can be an excellent way to make the most of your time holidaying. You’ll be able to customize your dining experience, save time and effort by having someone else take care of the groceries and cooking, and add a touch of luxury to your vacation rental. So why not give it a try? You might find that hiring a private chef for your vacation rental is what you need to make your next holiday unique.

Guide to Traveling as a Private Chef

Last Updated on November 28, 2023

Working as a private chef who travels the world is a dream for many. However, like any job, it also comes with challenges, especially when traveling regularly. As a traveling chef, your responsibilities will depend on your type of work. Some accompany their bosses whenever they travel to different places to provide personal meal services. There are also those working as freelance chefs, taking up jobs as they travel to various places.

Regardless of the type of travelling chef you are, it’s worth knowing some tips to help make travelling less hassle-free. So, here’s a guide to travelling as a private chef.

Table of Contents

Planning is Key

Planning is crucial when working as a traveling private chef . There will be days where you will be cooking the entire day, and on some days, you will be doing a lot of preparation and setting up for future events. Unlike working in a commercial kitchen where you’ll have somebody else to help you, you only have yourself to rely on. Therefore, you must plan accordingly.

While most chefs work in a fully staffed kitchen, it’s more of a “one-man show” when you work as a private chef. It is like being the sous, commis, pastry, and head chef rolled into one. While it is not easy to be solely accountable, some chefs enjoy the challenge and freedom of working as a private chef. The key is to prepare. In fact, being a good planner is an essential skill that you need to have.

Some things to plan include the menus depending on their client’s diet preferences, whether vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc. You also need to plan the storage of food and ingredients, time of cooking, cleaning up, sanitizing, and more. The list of tasks can vary depending on your client’s needs and the type of food you need to prepare for them.

Create Strong Relationships with Your Clients and Suppliers

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Julian Sisofo (@juliansisofo)

Establish positive relationships with your clients and suppliers, so much so that they will refer you to others. Networking can go a long way when working as a private chef, and you have to be mindful of the image you portray to your clients and others. Plenty of things can come out of a mere handshake.

Building a good relationship is more than just preparing a nice meal. The real value comes from your impact on your client’s everyday life, such as creating a personalised menu or making the dish more appealing to elevate the overall dining experience.

Establishing a relationship with your clients takes time, effort, and skills that only come naturally to some chefs. The key is knowing your client’s likes and dislikes. Do not hesitate to ask questions to ensure that the food you prepare and cook for them exceeds expectations. Doing so can help establish trust with your client and confirm they made the right decision to hire you.

Supplier relations are as essential as client relations, especially in a competitive world. Most clients will be willing to hire a chef who knows the right people who can supply fresh and high-quality ingredients, which can go a long way in improving your professional reputation.

Understand Food Safety

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Serkan akgül (@culinarychefs)

Proper food safety and food hygiene practices are crucial in food preparation. As a private chef, you are responsible for your client’s safety by following proper food handling and preparation practices. Thus, taking food hygiene courses is crucial as a private chef. It offers an excellent way to equip yourself with all the information you need to prepare and make food safely. If you do not have adequate training on food safety, you can present health risks to your client.

For anyone who handles food, appropriate food safety training is a must. Therefore, as a private chef, you must prioritise food safety training. Everyone who prepares and cooks food should know the safety hazards and how to minimise and prevent contamination. The best way to educate yourself on food safety is by taking appropriate training, covering all food safety basics, including food safety hazards and best practices.

The content of the food safety training course will vary depending on the level. But it generally covers safe practices in food preparation, cooking, and handling. It also helps you to understand food safety terminologies and local regulations, recognise hazards, the right food temperature, clean, sanitising, allergens, and more.

Create an Experience for Your Guests

Impress your client by creating a memorable dining experience . There are various factors to consider to achieve this, from menu planning to presentation and service. By focusing on these elements, you can create an experience that will leave a lasting impression on your client.

When planning the menu, it’s crucial to understand your client’s dietary restrictions or preferences. These include allergies and special diets like vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free. By accommodating these needs, you can ensure your client will have a great dining experience, free from worries.

The presentation is as important as the overall taste. Thus, one of the best ways to create an experience for guests is to use creative plating techniques to elevate the dishes’ visual appeal. You can use specially designed dishes or unique utensils to make the food stand out.

Pay attention to small details, such as the decorative elements and garnishes, which can affect the overall presentation. Arrange and present the dishes appropriately, and ensure the foods have the right portions.

Be Sure to Get Out and Explore on Your Days Off

The opportunity to travel and explore new places is the biggest perk of working as a private chef. So, take full advantage of this by getting out and exploring on your days off. Immerse in the local culture and discover the cuisines by going on a food tour or visiting local markets. On your market visit, you may even discover some local ingredients you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Being able to travel with your client opens you to the opportunity to explore a vast variety of cultures through gastronomic delicacies. As a chef, you know that food is almost always more delicious and authentic when you enjoy it in the country or place of origin.

private chef trip

The advice I'll offer is be crystal clear about the menu and get it in writing. Double check the day before or day off.

I had a very nice conversation with the chef about the type of menu I wanted (fresh, local flavors, local style, West Indian inspired) He offered some great ideas and I said "yep, that all sounds great" We ended up with frozen (Asian) lobster tails, white rice and sauteed asparagus, not the meal I expected. $135+tip per person.

Know your group. Some groups just want the luxury of not having to cook. Some groups want a better meal than they could cook themselves. Some groups want a better meal than they would find at a local restaurant. Figure out which group(s) your's falls into and start from there.

Try Ted’s Supper Club. My husband and I have had Chef Ted cook for us several times. Delicious food. Always a highlight of our trip.

I’ve read great things about Teds Supper Club.

We had Mayathon on one trip and he was fantastic. Haven’t read much about him since storms so not sure if he’s still around or not.

We also had Kent once (from Aqua Bistro). Fantastic but I’m not sure if he private chefs anymore

It’s a real treat having s chef one night.

Thanks so much. Ted's had also been recommended elsewhere, so good to hear other favorable reviews.

https://stjohncatering.com/ Mathayom comes highly rated. He closed Lucky Chops, but is still apparently doing his full moon parties, special events and private events as before.

Julie recently recommended Faye and I might look into ordering from her on an upcoming visit. I think he also does private dinners in addition to her gourmet meal delivery, breakfasts, etc.

Highly recommend Ted Robinson and his Supper Club service. Ted ran the successful restaurant Tage for years and continues his great cooking as a private chef. We recently stayed at the rental unit that is part of his home. We found him to be so very friendly and warm.

We brought some first-timers with us in 2017 and hired Mat for our post-charter dinner. In discussing our 2020 trip with the same group, the first thing everyone asked for is that we make sure to have at least two dinners planned this time around.

Snorkeler and Julie - I LOVE that Chef's concept and that is a service I will absolutely use next trip to STJ.

I meal plan, shop and cook from scratch most meal at home and its the last thing I want to do on vacation yet I am a food snob and want great food. Faye has exactly the type of service I have been dreaming about for years.

We had Pasdion Fruit cook for us in May, can’t say enough about them, the food was excellent as well as the experience!

Cleo, I know!! We are only there 7N next trip, coming in Tues, so it might not work out, bit I might try to do something. She did tell me we could do 4 meals instead of 5 as well. We still have faves on STJ we would want to visit. Might try to do breakfast provisioning too.

I was thrilled when we found Sam and Jacks premade dinners that were always great, this is the next level:)

Exclusive: Former Uchi chef opening Italian restaurant in Austin. Here's what to know.

F or a minute there, it seemed like Austin was going to drown under a wave of Italian restaurant openings. But the water has calmed, and a chef with a significant Austin pedigree is ready to jump in.

Here’s what you need to know about forthcoming Italian restaurant Casa Bianca.

What’s the concept?

Casa Bianca is an American-Italian restaurant and lounge that intends to put equal emphasis on food and drink. The owners hope it can be a place where you can enjoy a snack and cocktail on the rooftop bar or a 10-course tasting menu in the spacious dining room.

Who’s behind it?

Executive chef Joseph Zoccoli was a 9-year veteran of Hai Hospitality, where he ascended to the role of chef de cuisine at Uchi. But the longtime chef has a passion for Italian food. Zoccoli ran the popular Italian pop-up series with the NSFW-Italian name, Che Cazzo, in 2021 and 2022, setting up temporary shop at venues like Kitty Cohen’s and Austin Winery. He has also worked as a private chef in recent years.

Zoccoli has partnered in the project with co-owner and beverage director Richard Thomas, who founded boutique cocktail service Cantaloupe Island Cocktails in 2021 and served as beverage director for the launch of Bill’s Oyster downtown last year. This is the first restaurant for the co-owners.

What’s on the menu?

Given Zoccoli’s background at Uchi, diners can expect elegant raw bar offerings, alongside a roster of handmade pasta dishes. The beverage menu will feature takes on Italian classics, a wide selection of amari and a wine list featuring natural wines from emerging producers.

Where is it?

The restaurant is located in the former Eastside Tavern space at 1510 E. Cesar Chavez St. and features indoor and outdoor dining areas, as well as a rooftop bar. But don’t expect the same look as the previous tenant. Casa Bianca will feature a modern Texan take on art deco design by Magic Architecture.

When is it opening?

Open date is to be determined, but owners hope for an April opening.

Want more details?

Casa Bianca is online at casabiancaatx.com and on Instagram @casabiancaatx

Frequently asked questions

Below you can find the most common questions about Private Chefs in Rhode Island.

A Private Chef service includes everything necessary to enjoy the experience, from the customization of a menu to the purchase of ingredients, the mise en place prior to the service, the preparation of the menu at the guests' home, the complete table service, and lastly the set up and cleaning of the kitchen and the spaces used during the experience. Tableware and glassware are not included. Gratuity is entirely up to the guests' discretion.

The price of a private chef service depends essentially on the number of people. On average, for bookings of 2 people, the price of a Private Chef in Rhode Island is 198 USD per person. Between 3 and 6 people, the average price is 172 USD per person. Between 7 and 12 people, the average price is 135 USD. For 13 or more people the average price is 145 USD. It is important to point out that, depending on the destination, Private Chef reservations may be more or less seasonal and, therefore, the price may fluctuate. This also applies to last minute bookings, where prices may also vary.

To hire a Private Chef just select a date, number of people, let us know your food preferences and intolerances and share with us a few details about your kitchen. In a matter of a few hours, you will receive four tailor-made menus and will be able to review the chef's profile, reviews and pictures of their dishes. You will also be able to speak directly with each chef through the messaging area on the platform and ask for menu modifications, price changes, and generally discuss any questions you may have. Once you have chosen your favorite chef and menu, you can finalize your reservation on the website. Once the reservation is confirmed, you will receive the chef's direct contact information to finalize the details.

In Rhode Island there are currently 90 Private Chefs available. To find the best chef, you only have to fill in the form and the 4 best local chefs available on the chosen date will send you their menu proposal. You will be able to check in detail their professional profile and choose the chef/proposal you like the most.

There is no maximum number of people, although a Private Chef service is usually carried out in a more intimate level along with friends or family, and usually in homes where space is limited. Even though there is no maximum number of people, generally the groups do not exceed 15 people.

A Private Chef always prepares the menu at the client's home, as it is an inherent part of the experience. However, depending on the complexity of the menu, the chef may prepare a mise en place before going to the client's home, as some dishes take several hours to prepare and it would be impossible to execute all the steps at the client's home.

Absolutely! Usually, there are always several food lovers among the diners who take the opportunity to share some time with the chef, learn some tricks in the kitchen and the step-by-step of each of the dishes on the menu. For those diners who really want to get hands on, they can of course join the chef and cook!

Every Private Chef gives the utmost importance to the freshness of the ingredients used in their menus. The main difference between a restaurant and a private chef is in the personalized treatment of each diner. The chef personalizes the menu, and based on that menu, makes the necessary purchases to develop the menu chosen by the customers. Therefore, the freshness of the ingredients is one of the key elements of a Private Chef service.

Drinks are not included by default. However, you can reach an agreement with the chef in order to add drinks as an "extra" to the menu proposal.

Each guest can freely decide the tip he/she wishes to give to the chef, as it is up to their discretion. On average, based on the tips given by 1449 guests in Rhode Island, guests usually tip 14,72% of the total amount to their Private Chef.

Baltimore bridge collapse wasn't first major accident for giant container ship Dali

Propulsion failed on the cargo ship that struck the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday as it was leaving port, causing it to collapse into the frigid Patapsco River. Its crew warned Maryland officials of a possible collision because they had lost control.

“The vessel notified MD Department of Transportation (MDOT) that they had lost control of the vessel” and a collision with the bridge “was possible,” according to an unclassified Department of Homeland Security report. “The vessel struck the bridge causing a complete collapse.”

An official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed to USA TODAY that the DHS’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is working with federal, state, and local officials “to understand the potential impacts of this morning’s collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.”

Clay Diamond, executive director, American Pilots’ Association, told USA TODAY power issues are not unusual on cargo ships, which are so large they cannot easily course correct.

“It’s likely that virtually every pilot in the country has experienced a power loss of some kind (but) it generally is momentary,” Diamond said. “This was a complete blackout of all the power on the ship, so that’s unusual. Of course this happened at the worst possible location.”

The ship in Tuesday's crash, Dali, was involved in at least one prior accident when it collided with a shipping pier in Belgium.

That 2016 incident occurred as the Dali was leaving port in Antwerp and struck a loading pier made of stone, causing damage to the ship’s stern, according to VesselFinder.com, a site that tracks ships across the world. An investigation determined a mistake made by the ship’s master and pilot was to blame.

No one was injured in that crash, although the ship required repair and a full inspection before being returned to service. The pier – or berth – was also seriously damaged and had to be closed.

VesselFinder reports that the Dali was chartered by Maersk, the same company chartering it during the Baltimore harbor incident.

The 9-year-old container ship had passed previous inspections during its time at sea, but during one such inspection in June at the Port of San Antonio in Chile, officials discovered a deficiency with its "propulsion and auxiliary machinery (gauges, thermometers, etc)," according to the Tokyo MOU, an intergovernmental maritime authority in the Asia-Pacific region.

The report provided no other information about the deficiency except to note that it was not serious enough to remove the ship from service.

Why did Dali crash into the Baltimore bridge?

Officials said Tuesday they’re investigating the collision, including whether systems on board lost electricity early Tuesday morning, which could be related to mechanical failure, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Accidents at sea, known as marine casualties, are not uncommon, the source told USA TODAY. However, “allisions,” in which a moving object strikes a stationary one with catastrophic results, are far less common. The investigation of the power loss aboard the Dali, a Singapore-flagged vessel, will be a high priority.

In a video posted to social media, lights on the Dali shut off, then turned back on, then shut off again before the ship struck a support pier on the bridge.

Numerous cargo and cruise ships have lost power over the years.

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea requires all international vessels to have two independent sources of electricity, both of which should be able to maintain the ship's seaworthiness on their own, according to a safety study about power failures on ships , citing the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

The Dali's emergency generator was likely responsible for the lights coming back on after the initial blackout, Diamond said.

“There was still some steerage left when they initially lost power,” he said. “We’ve been told the ship never recovered propulsion. The emergency generator is a diesel itself – so if you light off the generator, that’s also going to put off a puff of exhaust.”

Under maritime law, all foreign flagged vessels must be piloted into state ports by a state licensed pilot so the Dali's pilot is licensed by Association of Maryland Pilots .

Diamond described the incident based on information from the Maryland agency that licensed the pilot aboard the ship. His organization represents that group and all other state piloting agencies in the US.

“The pilot was directing navigation of the ship as it happened,” he said. “He asked the captain to get the engines back online. They weren’t able to do that, so the pilot took all the action he could. He tried to steer, to keep the ship in the channel. He also dropped the ship’s anchor to slow the ship and guide the direction.

“Neither one was enough. The ship never did regain its engine power.”

How big is the Dali ship?

The Dali is a 984-foot container vessel built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. With a cruising speed of about 22 knots – roughly 25 mph. It has traveled the world carrying goods from port to port.

The ship, constructed of high-strength steel, has one engine and one propeller, according to MarineTraffic.com.

The Dali arrived in Baltimore on Sunday from the Port of Norfolk in Virginia. Before that, it had been in New York and came through the Panama Canal.

It remains at the scene of the collapse as authorities investigate.

Who owns and operates the Dali?

It is owned by the Singapore-based Grace Ocean Pte Ltd but managed by Synergy Marine Group, also based in Singapore. It was carrying Maersk customers’ cargo, according to a statement from the shipping company.

“We are deeply concerned by this incident and are closely monitoring the situation,” Maersk said in the statement.

Synergy, which describes itself as a leading ship manager with more than 600 vessels under its guidance, issued a statement on its website acknowledging the incident and reporting no injuries among its crew and no pollution in the water. There were two pilots on board and 22 crew members in all, according to Synergy, all of them from India.

USA TODAY reached out to Synergy on Tuesday, but the company did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

People pay a $200K initiation fee and $15K a year to join the Aman Club, the most expensive private members' club in NYC. Take a peek inside.

  • Interest in private members' clubs has soared in the US with the rise of remote working.
  • In New York, the most exclusive and expensive is the Aman Club, which opened in 2022.
  • Look around the ultra-luxury club that members pay a $200K initiation fee and $15K a year to join.

Insider Today

In an era where working from home is the overwhelming first choice in the US but where people still crave community, it's no wonder many are reporting a rise in interest in private members' clubs .

These clubs are not a new phenomenon in the US. In New York alone, the first opened their doors in the Gilded Age . Unsurprisingly, members were often men with deep pockets.

Fast-forward to 2024, and most private members' clubs in the city are gender-inclusive. But it still doesn't hurt to have money.

Soho House and Zero Bond are among the most popular clubs in New York. Members are charged upwards of $5,000 and $3,000, respectively.

But that's nothing compared to what members pay to join the Aman Club — a private members' club opened by the ultra-luxury hospitality resort chain of the same name in 2022.

Here's a sneak peek inside.

The club is situated within the Aman Hotel on Fifth Avenue.

The Aman in NYC is in The Crown Building on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street. The hotel is located within a building that has long been a fixture in midtown Manhattan.

It's over 100 years old, comprised of 26 stories, and screams luxury with its golden ornamental facade.

Besides the 83 suites and 22 private residences, two lounges are dedicated to club members.

Joining the Aman Club comes at a steep price. Members pay a $200,000 initiation fee and an annual recurring fee of $15,000.

Let's not beat around the bush: ultra-luxury comes at a price. How much, you ask? Well, a representative of the Aman Club told Business Insider that the global membership includes annual dues of $15,000 and an initiation fee of $200,000.

If it's any consolation, members can also "add up to four additional family members as registered members to enjoy the Aman Club membership benefits," a representative told the New York Post .

In 2019, Aman Resorts CEO Vlad Doronin told Bloomberg the membership grants access to two bars, restaurants, a private wine library, the cigar terrace, a subterranean jazz club, and the wellness area.

Amenities include the 25,000-square-foot heated indoor swimming pool.

The pool, located within the three-story wellness center, is bordered by lounging areas and glass-covered fire pits.

Upstairs, a 7,000-square-foot garden terrace with panoramic city views is only accessible to members, hotel guests, and residents.

The expansive garden terrace has a retractable glass roof, meaning members, hotel guests, and residents can relax and dine there year-round.

They can also enjoy drinks at the corner bar, which overlooks Fifth Avenue and 57th Street.

Suites at the hotel start at around $3,200 a night.

A representative for the club declined to share whether members receive a discount on hotel suites when asked by BI.

However, Tatler Asia reported they have access to a "private office" — staff members available 24/7 to look after their personal and travel needs.

Members get a 10% discount on food and beverages at the four exclusive dining areas.

private chef trip

An Aman Club policy sheet reviewed by BI states that members can settle monthly bills from dining and drinking at the club through their "House Account." If they spend $10,000 in a month, the bill will automatically be processed with the credit card on file.

But there is a perk: members receive a 10% discount on food and nonalcoholic drinks at the four dining areas at the hotel.

These include Arva, an Italian restaurant; Nama, a Japanese restaurant with an omakase dining experience; the garden terrace; and the lounge bar.

Members use a digital card to access the club and other exclusive spaces, such as the 25,000-square-foot wellness area.

private chef trip

When they arrive at Aman New York, members use a digital club card to access the exclusive facilities — including the restaurants, terraces, lounges, and, of course, the three-story, 25,000-square-foot wellness area.

Within the space are several different facilities, including the indoor pool, two distinct spa houses, a fitness center, a yoga and pilates studio decked out with reformers, a cryotherapy chamber, an InfraRed zone, a hair salon, and a nail salon.

The wellness area offers treatments like custom IV drips, electrolyte therapy, and acne management services.

private chef trip

Aman Club members don't just have access to a spa with massages, saunas, hot tubs, and pools; they can also take advantage of an array of treatments offered within the wellness area by in-house doctors, though they still have to pay for it.

The website names a few of the "non-invasive treatments" available, including custom IV vitamin drips, electrolyte therapy, acne management, and microneedling.

Perhaps the best benefit of the Aman Club is that members likely rub shoulders with A-listers who can't get enough of the luxury hotel chain.

private chef trip

The Aman Club remains silent on how many members it has and their identities. But in 2022, The Times of London reported that there was talk that all 600 membership slots had been filled.

Taking photos and videos inside the club is forbidden. Still, given the price of joining, it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine that many of the members enjoying the swanky facilities are high profile in some way or another.

But even if a member isn't a celebrity, they'll likely brush shoulders with them.

BI previously reported that a few A-listers who have stayed at an Aman hotel include George and Amal Clooney, Bill Gates, and the Kardashians.

Can Reed Hastings Disrupt Skiing?

The Netflix co-founder bought Powder Mountain, in Utah, and is turning half of it into a private club for wealthy homeowners who pay a hefty annual fee. Will the public-private model fly?

On a Monday morning in early March, Reed Hastings, the billionaire co-founder and former chief executive of Netflix, clicked into the bindings on his snowboard and started off down one of the slopes at Powder Mountain, a ski area in Utah’s northeast corner. He quickly veered off the groomed trail into some well-spaced trees, and as he made turns over bumpy snow, you could hear his edges scratch against patches of ice.

“Not as good as I was hoping,” he said at the bottom. “But still not bad.”

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Mr. Hastings, 63, seemed to be enjoying the perks that come with his new gig: ski area owner. “I used to snowboard about 10 times a year,” he said. “Now getting out is part of the job.”

Last September, Mr. Hastings, bought a controlling interest in Powder Mountain for an undisclosed sum, inheriting more than $100 million in debt.

A small figure can be seen skiing down a snow covered ridge with a large snow covered mountain in the background.

Not long after, he announced that he was adopting a business model never before tried in the ski industry: He would make 2,000 acres of the mountain’s terrain private, accessible only to people who owned homes in an enclave atop the mountain and who paid a membership fee expected to run between $30,000 and $100,000 per year. The rest of the ski area would remain open to the public, underwritten by the private operation.

The move, he said, was a way to compete with the multimountain passes like Ikon and Epic, without drawing the crowds that come with them. “All of the independent ski areas are looking for ways to survive,” he said. “Going boutique, higher end, private, is probably where they need to go.”

Mr. Hastings, embraces the notion that he can disrupt the ski industry the way he disrupted entertainment, though he admits he’s learning the ski business on the fly.

Will it work?

“We’ll have to wait and see,” said Rick Kahl, 71, the longtime editor of Ski Area Management, a trade publication. “But I wouldn’t bet against the guy who started Netflix.”

Rickety chairlifts and charm

With 8,464 acres of skiable terrain, Powder Mountain, which averages around 360 inches of snow each season, is one of the largest ski areas in the United States. All of that terrain is on private land; most ski areas either lease their land from the U.S. Forest Service or operate on a patchwork of public and private land. Powder has rickety chairlifts and aging day lodges that imbue the place with a certain air of nostalgia. Adding to the charm is that, upon descending some runs, getting back to the lift requires hopping on an old bus.

And, because PowMow (as it’s affectionately referred to) is a bit off the beaten path and has very limited nearby lodging, there are never any crowds.

But the ski area — like many other independently owned resorts — has never been able to make money. Summit, an event-hosting group, bought it in 2013 and had huge plans to build a village with 500 homes, restaurants, bars and possibly even a neuroscience lab and high-altitude performance center. But it failed to sell many of the homesites, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for as little as a quarter acre of land, and the ski area continued to lose money.

Mr. Hastings, fed up with crowds at heavily developed Park City, had built a home at Powder in 2021. When Summit decided it wanted out, he swooped in.

“I felt I had to do it to preserve the experience here,” he said.

Mr. Hastings, whose net worth is $5.98 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index , immediately invested $100 million of his own money in the ski area, paying off a portion of the debt and purchasing four new chairlifts, which are set to be installed this summer.

He is also planning to build two day lodges with restaurants, private rentals and retail stores for the mountain’s private side, and a 40,000-square-foot lodge will serve as an afternoon and evening hub for members and feature a state-of-the-art spa.

Shortly after the announcement, Mr. Hastings pulled all existing lots on the mountain off the market. When he relists them, he said, the starting price will be $2 million. On Friday he announced that he had also purchased 2,400 acres of terrain adjacent to the ski area’s existing boundary, which will also only be accessible to members.

His bet is that if he can sell all the homesites, membership fees for the private portion of the ski area will pay for overhead and improvements on both the public and private sections.

The private experience

Mr. Hastings isn’t the only ski area owner with the notion that privatization might be a means toward profitability.

In 2022, the owners of Homewood Mountain Resort in Homewood, Calif., announced plans to restrict season pass and day ticket sales to certain Homewood homeowners. After public outcry, that plan was scrapped, according to a spokeswoman for the resort.

The new owners of Windham Mountain Club, in New York, announced in October that they would charge a membership fee starting at $175,000 that would give members access to special amenities and let them ski the slopes in the mornings before they open to the public.

The Yellowstone Club, which was founded in 1997, in Big Sky, Mont., is perhaps most similar to Mr. Hastings’s model. Club members have access to more than 2,700 acres of private ski and snowboard terrain, and if they have also have a pass to Big Sky Resort, which shares a border with the club, can ski directly onto Big Sky’s 5,800 acres of public slopes.

Before skiing together, Mr. Hastings and I sat on brown leather sofas in his Powder Mountain Village home — a cylindrical-shaped modern house with a concrete kitchen island, an impressive looking espresso machine and panoramic views of the Wasatch Mountains and Ogden Valley — as he explained to me why the changes at the ski area were necessary.

“I’m investing a lot of money in Powder Mountain but my plan was never to subsidize it,” he said. “My passion is the charities that I work with, but I never saw this as a charitable endeavor.”

As he looked at the mountain’s finances, he said, “it became clear that we needed to do something significant.”

In the end, that something was leveraging the mountain’s available real estate. “We decided that we needed to lure people here by offering a private experience that they can’t get anyplace else,” he said.

If his plan pans out, Harris Sondak, the former mayor of Alta, Utah, and a professor at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business , said that more ski areas might adopt a public/private model to increase revenue. “Running a ski area is expensive, and any new way to make money is often embraced,” he said.

In addition to taking part of the mountain private, Mr. Hastings is raising the price of a season pass to $1,399 from $1,259. A season pass for seniors 75 and older, which used to be free, will now cost $1,049. The number of season passes sold, which had been capped, will no longer be limited, though the number of day tickets will.

Much of the ski community, particularly locals, was upset by the changes. “I’m very concerned,” said Aaron Vexler, 48, who has owned a condominium at Powder Mountain since 2012. “They’re severely limiting the terrain, raising prices, and also selling more passes. How do you sell more passes and keep the ski area uncrowded?” Others, feeling as though Mr. Hastings is only interested in making money, gave the new owner a nickname, “Greed” Hastings.

During our conversation, Mr. Hastings pointed out that three of the new lifts he is putting in will provide access to public terrain. As part of the announcement of the new private terrain, Mr. Hastings also said that more than 1,000 acres of terrain will be added to the public side of the ski area, opening in 2025. “All the new terrain will help spread people out and help keep the ski area uncrowded,” he said.

Checking out the new terrain

After my runs with Mr. Hastings, Kevin Mitchell, Powder Mountain’s general manager, and I hopped in a small snowcat to explore some of the new private terrain in an area known as Davenport, which is currently used for guided cat skiing.

After a 15-minute ride, we got out and put on our skis to descend a steep slope, making smeary turns on untouched snow through the trees. I was impressed. But when we got back into the cat and headed around the bend, I was astonished.

Above us I saw steep, craggy pitches — terrain that’s so challenging it has garnered attention from the professional snowboarder Travis Rice, who has created a series of extreme snowboarding competitions known as Natural Selection . Mr. Mitchell said Mr. Rice was considering holding one of his events there. A lift is planned for the area, though for next season, members will ride a snowcat to the top.

Before venturing into Davenport, I’d wondered if the existing slopes that were becoming private were appealing enough to entice well-heeled skiers and snowboarders to throw down on $2 million lots and high membership fees. With Davenport, the private offering is the total package.

“The overall experience for the private community will feel integrated but elevated,” said Alex Zhang, Powder’s chief creative officer. “The homeowners have access to premium conveniences — such as ski-in ski-out housing, upscale lodges and private lifts — resulting in untracked powder that last for days.”

A few days later, we checked out the new public terrain. A large portion of it is known as “Don’t Mention It,” or DMI for short. It was named by backcountry skiers who found the descents there so good that they didn’t want anybody else to know about them. After a short hike beyond the ski area boundary, I was able to get a full view of the slopes and could see why they so coveted them.

Dozens of steep, long runs and chutes wind down the vast expanse, with huge boulders jutting out of the land like prehistoric monuments. A big open bowl makes up much of the new terrain, but extreme skiers and snowboarders will drool over the north-facing slopes, which trump the skiing in Davenport and, when they open, will likely be considered some of the best skiing in the country.

“There will be a lift back here and maybe two lifts,” Mr. Mitchell said. “We have a year’s worth of planning to do.”

Fortunately, I didn’t have to wait that long. I dropped onto a slope and skied through well-spaced trees, descending the length of nearly seven football fields. It hadn’t snowed much in about eight days, but the run still held light powder that drifted over my boot tops. At the bottom, my legs were burning and I had a frozen grin on my face.

Traditions unchanged

One day after skiing, I grabbed a stool at the Powder Keg, a bar at the mountain that’s famous for its greasy burgers and its old-school ambience. I drank a beer and listened to a local woman strum her guitar and belt out folk tunes. None of that will change.

Though Timberline Lodge, the building that houses the Powder Keg, will get an upgrade, Mr. Hastings said he is intent on keeping many of Powder Mountain’s sacred spots and traditions unchanged. When finishing runs in the area known as Powder Country, for example, you’ll still get on a bus back to the lifts.

“You can’t just tear down a building, put up a new one, call it the same thing, and expect people to feel the same way about it,” Mr. Hastings said.

Mr. Hastings said it’s that old-school vibe that makes Powder Mountain special. “We’re building a luxury experience on the private side of the mountain,” he said. “But many of the homeowners will still ski the public side and want to experience the parts of Powder Mountain that you won’t be able to get in the village.”

At the time of my visit, Mr. Hastings had college friends visiting.

“I sent them to the Powder Keg for lunch,” he said. “It’s one of my favorite places to eat.”
