MODERATE TEMPO

Tempo is not how fast you swing it, it is how you swing it fast. Tempo will affect how you load and unload the shaft and is a big factor in which shaft will best suit you. A player with a quicker backswing and more aggressive transition will have a faster tempo, while a player with a slower backswing and smoother transition will have a more deliberate tempo.

LOW TRAJECTORY

Trajectory is the flight of the ball and the peak height that the ball reaches. A player who struggles with getting the ball in the air should look towards a higher trajectory shaft, while a player who struggles hitting the ball too high should look for a lower trajectory shaft.

Dynamic Gold X100 Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

The True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shaft is one of the “Tour Issue” shafts in the Dynamic Gold line.

It is made for the experienced and discerning golfer who can notice slight differences in golf club shaft weight.

The Dynamic Gold X100 has been used to great success on the PGA Tour by some of the best players in the world. But does it have anything to offer the everyday golfer? We wanted to see for ourselves so we took our testing team, which consists of both mid and low handicap players, to the links to see how they handled the Dynamic Gold X100.

Dynamic Gold X100 Overview

The Dynamic Gold X100 is a tour-weighted steel shaft ideal for irons.

For the most part, you will need a pretty fast swing to unlock the distance potential that these shafts bring to the table. We’ve heard people say that they have seen players use the Dynamic Gold X100 shafts very poorly, usually citing wide shot dispersion.

After our testing, we have come to the conclusion that erratic shot dispersion is usually the fault of the player and not so much the shaft. How you load and unload the shaft will have a lot to do with how the Dynamic Gold X100 performs. If you have a deliberate tempo, it’s understandable that shot dispersion and distance will be erratic.

Overall, the Dynamic Gold X100 produces a low launch and has a high kick point – a tandem that will surely appeal to better players with fast swing speeds and at least a  moderate tempo.

Why is Dynamic Gold So Popular?

Probably because these shafts are in the bags of tons of pros.

They are also a very common sight in professional fittings. The Dynamic Gold Tour Issue series of shafts, which consists of the Dynamic Gold X100 and the Dynamic Gold S400 are a bit on the heavier side so they appeal to faster swing speed players who are looking for more stability at impact.

Aside from performance, True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts are likely so popular because of the technology and features that go into them. They all feature a firm tip and variable wall technology. These features give the player an incredible amount of club head control – you can really feel the high level of control when you swing. Pros, amateurs and casual players alike have found that the Dynamic Gold series of shafts is ideal for iron play.

How Does the Dynamic Gold X100   Perform?

Almost every tester in our party noted a low, piercing trajectory with the Dynamic Gold X100.

The low handicap testers in our group (all hovering around the 90-96 MPH swing speed mark) were getting very tight shot dispersion. Our mid handicappers also noticed tight shot dispersion; but less consistently.

They mentioned that they can feel when the shaft was loaded awkwardly and that it was on those shots that dispersion was poor. About half of our low handicap testers noted that they were getting about 4 yards of extra difference on average with the Dynamic Gold X100 fitted on their 5-irons.

“Accuracy” was an adjective that we heard over and over again from our testers. These shafts seem to be made for short iron and wedge play. Again, the Dynamic Gold X100 shaft has a high kick point so you are going to gain some ball speed and distance from the low trajectory launch – if you have enough club head speed to counteract the weight of this shaft.

Overall, the Dynamic Gold X100 performed extremely well in  terms of distance and short game accuracy.

What flexes are available what swing speed do they suit.

The Dynamic Gold X100 is a Tour Issue shaft so it is only available in extra stiff flex.

You will need a swing speed between about 88 and 98 MPH at least to get the full distance benefits from this shaft.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speed Do They Suit?

The Dynamic Gold X100 is only available in a 130 gram version which actually isn’t the heaviest Dynamic Gold shaft in the line (see the Dynamic Gold S400).

Again, you will need a swing speed in the mid to upper 90’s to counteract the weight and get the intended launch. A moderate to fast tempo will also help.

Why is it So Good?

The Dynamic Gold X100 is great for low handicap players seeking better stability for their high club head speed.

It affords faster swingers the accuracy they need on the fairway and around the pin.

We actually thought the Dynamic Gold X100 was lighter than 130 grams. It doesn’t feel much heavier than other Dynamic Gold shafts we’ve tested; but then again, none of us are hypersensitive players.

Who Should Buy it?  

The Dynamic Gold X100 shaft is clearly for low handicap to scratch players.

Even our mid handicap testers had a bit of trouble loading the Dynamic Gold X100 for tight shot dispersion. But if you have a fast swing speed and at least a moderate tempo, you will love the distance and accuracy of this shaft.

Introduction.

It’s not too often that a product sneaks up on me, but True Temper’s Dynamic Gold AMT shafts did just that.  Their sister set over at Project X, the LZ, has stolen the headlines with recent PGA Tour domination, but the AMT is no slouch: 5 PGA Tour wins, in the bags of 40+ players, and over $33 million in winnings.  From the first day of testing, I saw why as these shafts made a damn near irrefutable case to go into the bag.

The feel of the Dynamic Golf AMT shafts is identical to the industry-standard Dynamic Gold.  It’s super stable, has very little kick, and a solid impact feel.

Performance

The question you may be asking is, “What’s the point of making each shaft progressively lighter?”  Well, there is no point…unless you like hitting your long irons higher and farther with less effort while maintaining control of your scoring irons .

For me, switching to DG AMT may allow me to put more irons back in my bag.  As someone who hits a fairly low ball with average speed, I gave up my 3 and 4 irons a few years ago, but I still keep them around for shaft testing.  In testing with the exact same iron head, I was getting 5-7 MPH more ball speed from DG AMT than from standard DG.  That’s a direct result of the 3I shaft weighing 114 grams instead of 130.  I also saw gains in my mid-irons, though they were not as large.

It’s important to note that Dynamic Gold AMT is NOT a flighted set .  Flighted sets, like the DG Pro, are a great idea, but the DG AMT provides a different way to solve the problem of hitting long irons too low and short.

Finally, the other question I want to answer is, “What separates Dynamic Gold AMT Tour Issue from standard Dynamic Gold AMT?”  The answer is quality control tolerances.  When you pay for the Tour Issue version of a Dynamic Gold shaft, you’re guaranteed that there will be no more than a +/- 0.5 gram weight tolerance throughout the set.  Plus the stickers are cooler.

If you miss your 3I and want to get it back in the bag, switching to Dynamic Gold AMT may be your best bet.  Though you get to keep the same heavy, consistent feel in your short irons, DG AMT gives you a lighter shaft in your mid to long irons that allows for more ball speed and more distance.  Visit a True Temper Performance Fitting Center to see if Dynamic Gold AMT is right for your game.

Hey, Matt. TX for your nice article. I’m curious to know the difference between DG AMT’s and other newer innovative shafts out there when married with Tour-level heads like the 716 AP2 or Mizuno’s 950 Tour.

What other innovative shafts should I consider?

I couldn’t recommend a shaft outside of the context of a fitting. Being in Illinois, I would recommend that you get a fitting at Club Champion to find out what shaft performs best for you.

How do these dynamic gold amt shafts compare to say the XP 95 both in stiff or regular….Should the XP 95 shafts launch higher then these new dynamic gold amt shafts???? Trying to find a shaft to put into a set of Wilson Staff FG V 6 irons…..Thanks…Ali

I would strongly recommend you work with a fitter to find the right shaft for your irons. On paper, the XP 95 is much lighter than the AMT and should launch higher, but actual performance can vary based on individual swings/preferences.

Hey Matt, can you give me your thoughts on the AMT whites versus the Project X 6.0’s. I hit both in a fitting for 718s, but can’t see a noticeable difference. Am I missing something?

I’m not sure what the differences are among the various AMTs that Titleist is using in the 718s, so I couldn’t give you an educated comparison. Generally, if you’re not seeing or feeling a difference, you’re not missing anything. If it’s not different for you, it’s not different.

Thanx for your input…as an older golfer I thought a sr shaft would work for me. I was wrong!! Now back with amt red r300 and can feel the ball on my club face. Team titleist always.

What differences will you see in S300 vs X100? The wights are the sane. Thank you for your time.

The X100 is going to be stiffer. It will feel different and likely launch the ball lower with less spin.

I’m considering this shaft vs the Modus 120 and $ Taper paired with a Cobra MB/CB. Which do you prefer based on feel, trajectory, and overall performance?

On feel, I prefer the Modus. For performance, I would play the one that my fitter said performed best in the heads I was getting.

Thanks – our pro shop is pretty archaic as for as club fitting (rural Idaho). I hit the Modus on the range and it felt great. Haven’t had the opportunity to hit either of the others (but they come in black which matches the head and looks awesome!)

So now we all need lighter shafts in the longer irons. If a shaft is too heavy it’s too heavy , put the egos away and play lighter shafts or god forbid even try graphite.

It all depends on what you expect to gain from having TI shafts instead of the ordinary DG's. If you're looking to utilize the exacting weight tolerances of the TI's to build a custom set to precision in terms of swingweight - great. If you're expecting a noticeable difference in performance, feel and spin - forget it. They are basically exactly the same shaft - TI's are simply weight sorted to a much tighter tolerance (+/- 0.5g) Does anyone really notice this difference? Only those who believe they can. I humbly urge anyone who isn't in the the sort of need for a weight matched set of 8 irons to just buy OTR DG's and save yourself a small fortune.There really isn't any point in buying TI shafts in any quantity less than 8 - it defeats the purpose of a weight matched set otherwise. If you buy the odd one or two TI shafts (wedge guys take note) then what exactly is the point of having those shafts unmatched to the rest of the set? If it's a case of wanting to look like Joe Pro because of the horrid screen printed labels, you really need to get a life.

So are the TI X100 vs. the OTR X100 like the comparison of PX Satin's vs. regular PX's? I have the Satin's in my J33's now Scott

Well that's another big can o' worms. The difference between the PX satin versus regular PX is the stuff of folklore rather than specific differences. Some may argue the differences in production process makes for two entirely different shafts, but personally I've never seen a miniscule of difference between them. 'Feel' in itself is a subjective quantiity. In the case of the DG v TI feel again is subjective to the point that it really is the placebo effect. Many are convinced they have a better feeling shaft because it costs more. This simply isn't the case. For the record, PX satins and chrome PX shafts are identical IMO - much as DG and TI are identical. Flame away shaft ho's.

I agree whole heartily that the DG X100 and Tour issue X100 play and feel the same. Just go to a club builder who has a bunch of x100's in stock and he can pretty much weight sort a set for you. Project X on the other hand, I thought the Satins felt smoother and not as harsh, but in terms of playabilty, pretty much the same.

[/quote] I've researched this topic pretty extensively and have concluded it is just a way to jack up the price on TT's shafts. The last set of X100 shafts I bought were all within .5 grams of each other any ways- {I weighed them} Here is the skinny- these guys make thousands of shafts and it is pretty rare for one to weigh .5 grams off. If it a little heavy- oila! X200 or S400. In fact, i have bought x200 shafts that weigh exactly the same as x100. It's a way for them to get rid of their 'mistakes' If you look at the diagram on True Temper you can see that the x100 and S300 are the exact same shaft. It is just that the 3 iron x100 is the same as the 7 iron S300. These shafts are all made exactly the same and trimmed to fit either set. 1/2" of Butt weighs the same as 1/2" of tip. {If you buy .370 paralell- you get 8 shafts at 41" and have to trim them your self} Dont' waste your Bucks!!!!!!!! If you are really that anal, buy three sets of x100- weight them out and match them up to within.1 grams and then resell the other two sets. You will be $$$$ ahead - AND you will know for sure they match up.

I will also add that all my regular x100 shafts bought from golfworks were within the .5g sorting spec. I bought two S400 for my wedges and they were .5g difference and the heavier one went into the lob wedge.

What is in 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open winner Stephan Jaeger's bag? WITB explored

S tephan Jaeger claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory at the 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open, held at Memorial Park Golf Course. He used golf equipment from various golf manufacturers to win the event.

Jaeger played with Ping's G430 LST driver with a projected X HZRDUS black 6 TX shaft. Additionally, he employed a Callaway Paradym Ai smoke Triple Diamond Fairway Wood and Ping irons.

"It is insane the amount of progress" - Stephan Jaeger's wife on his win at the Houston Open

Stephan Jaeger won his maiden PGA Tour event on Sunday, March 31, in the presence of his wife, Shelby and his son.

Following the victory, Shelby opened up about Jaeger's win and reflected on his incredible journey. She told the PGA Tour that Stephan Jaeger had made tremendous progress in the last year.

Speaking to reporters about Jaeger's win at the Houston Open, Shelby stated:

"He, on the Kory Ferry (Tour) he just killed it. He was so good. And it took him awhile to get that confidence out here. And I knew once he got it, he would just run with it. So that hard work that he has put in, especially in the last year and a half. Just to watch it, I'm like, 'Oh my gosh.' Like he's been through a lot."

"He's become a dad, he's lost his dad, all within the same timeframe and he's just. He has stepped up and he's....I don't know..like it is insane the amount of progress he's made in a year. And I couldn't be more happy for him," she added.

Stephan Jaeger embarked on his professional journey in 2012. Initially, he competed on the PGA Tour Lationoamerica and then joined the Korn Ferry Tour, before ultimately earning the PGA Tour card in 2017. He has won seven tournaments so far, including six on the Korn Ferry Tour and one on the PGA Tour.

Cowboy Carter is the hotly anticipated follow-up to to Beyoncé's 2022 album, Renaissance .

How long have fans been speculating over the details of Beyoncé 's new album? It depends when you start counting: Some began buzzing over it the second her previous record, the dance-centric Renaissance , was released in 2022 and touted as "act one" of a trilogy. But the chatter has been especially fervent in the past two months, as singles, visuals and other teases popped up during the Grammys, Super Bowl and on the artist's own social media. The Beyhive's busiest bees analyzed clues that pointed toward a country music-inspired sound; they dissected the history of that genre, and how Black musicians have often been written out of it.

After months of anticipation, Cowboy Carter has finally arrived. Is it a country album? In many ways, yes — but it's also a sprawling work filled with disparate influences and references, while remaining a Beyoncé album at its heart. Two NPR Music staffers, reporter Sidney Madden and editor Sheldon Pearce , have been listening since the stroke of midnight. They come to you now with the 10 most important things to know about exactly what Cowboy Carter is, and is not.

1. It's a sprawling Western epic...

Just as Beyoncé's 2022 album, act i: RENAISSANCE , served as a world-building homage to the unsung Black queer youth who created house music, Cowboy Carter continues the lesson plan. In a statement soon after the album's worldwide release, the artist's Parkwood Entertainment shared that each song on the 27-track project is its own version of a reimagined Western film: "She took inspiration from films like Five Fingers for Marseilles , Urban Cowboy , The Hateful Eight , Space Cowboys , The Harder They Fall and Killers of the Flower Moon , often having the films playing on a screen during the recording process."

Each track, whether an interlude, collaboration or poignant solo, rides out like a full-length film full of scenic grandeur, character and conflicts that any Chitlin' Circuit aficionado or spaghetti Western cinephile can obsess over. As a whole, Cowboy Carter serves as a well of discovery, full of samples, sonic Easter eggs, Knowles family callbacks and, most importantly, an appreciation for pioneers in the country world.

2. ... with a searing image of its titular central character.

In the cowboy, Beyoncé finds her ideal figure of the American West and South. She cites the rodeo as the first place where anyone who loved country music and culture could gather and mingle and feel welcome. It's an image that runs counter to the experience that inspired the album: performing her song "Daddy Lessons" at the CMA Awards in 2016, where she has said she "did not feel welcomed ... and it was very clear that I wasn't." The Cowboy Carter character exists in conversation with the history of Black cowboys, the loaded meaning behind the term and its function in the American imagination.

3. It's a country album...

There are plenty of categorically country sounds on Cowboy Carter . String instruments are its sonic heartbeat, and the do-si-do of the slide guitar on "DESERT EAGLE" and "TEXAS HOLD 'EM" feel perfectly matched with Bey's feathery vocals. The jovial wiggle of the accordions on "RIIVERDANCE" tip a hat to zydeco music and the artist's Creole heritage. "PROTECTOR" (featuring Beyoncé's youngest daughter, Rumi) is anchored by acoustic guitar. "SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN' " interpolates "I Fall to Pieces," the shuffling standard made famous by Patsy Cline . Compared to Bey's past work in an R&B world full of glitz and glamor, many moments on the album, even with their layered arrangements, feel like intimate jam sessions straight out of a Nashville writing camp.

4. ... and it's also not.

Across the track list, elements of hip-hop, bluegrass and Chicano rock, with pop, rock, Jersey club music and operatic runs. "YA YA" conjures the charisma of Tina Turner and Chuck Berry , while winking in the direction of Nancy Sinatra and The Beach Boys . "BODYGUARD" is a breezy surf-rock romp with Latin percussion and a little whiskey on its breath. "AMEN" rings to the rafters in true gospel splendor. "SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN' " stacks genre upon genre and yet never overwhelms, instead connecting the dots between them with dusty horse gallops. The production credits stretch far beyond the scope of country stalwarts, making the album a treasure hunt for fans and issuing a challenge to the ways country music has come to be defined.

5. It's got country and Americana icons to set the tone...

Voices from country lore appear throughout the track list, signposts for the album's deconstructions of genre. The outlaw country pioneer Willie Nelson , who once bucked the Nashville sound himself, stands in as the host of KNTRY Radio Texas, Beyoncé's fictional pirate station. Dolly Parton draws a line from Becky with the good hair to Jolene, and turns up again before "TYRANT," encouraging Beyoncé to light up a juke joint. In a prelude to one of the album's most adventurous cuts, "SPAGHETTII," Linda Martell, an undersung, trailblazing Black country star of the '70s, lays out a sort of mission statement: "Genres are a funny little concept, aren't they? Yes, they are. In theory, they have a simple definition that's easy to understand. But in practice, well, some may feel confined."

6. ... and it's flipping some old tropes.

There are covers of country classics here that stand out for how stealthily they're reimagined. Parton's 1973 hit "Jolene" shows up early in the album, but Beyoncé adds her own sauce to flip its storied narrative. A vigilant Bey (flip-flopping between being upset and unbothered) clocks the "bird" chirping round her man; unlike Dolly, who responds to a similar threat with a plea for mercy, she puts her rival on notice: " I'm warnin' you, woman, find you your own man / Jolene, I know I'm a queen, Jolene / I'm still a Creole banjee bitch from Louisianne ." This twist renegotiates the common push and pull of rolling-stone / damsel-in-distress infidelity that's historically been a hallmark in country standards, and has only recently started to shift (see also: Carrie Underwood 's "Before He Cheats").

7. It gives flowers to unsung pioneers.

When Linda Martell shows up in the opening moments of "SPAGHETTII" to pose her question about genres, the slick rhetorical framing cuts to the main conceit of Cowboy Carter and centers Martell herself as a case in point. As a pioneer in the country space, Martell made history with her 1970 album, Color Me Country , and was the first Black woman to perform on the storied Grand Ole Opry. But because of the racist aggression she endured when moving from pop to country, Martell soon left the business. Now, at 82 years old, Martell's getting her due. Her voice is immortalized on both "SPAGHETTII" and "THE LINDA MARTELL SHOW," both tracks that play hopscotch with a range of genres. "I am proud that Beyoncé is exploring her country music roots," the veteran posted on Instagram . "What she is doing is beautiful, and I'm honored to be a part of it. It's Beyoncé, after all!"

8. It shines a light on the stars of country's new age.

A recent study tracking country music programming from 2000 through 2020 revealed that only 29% of country songs played on format radio were by women artists, and of that 29%, 0.01% were Black women. And so along with honoring pioneers, Cowboy Carter platforms new stars in the field who are still working their way through its entrenched gatekeeping and redlining.

Rhiannon Giddens strums her banjo on the album's lead single, "TEXAS HOLD 'EM." Virginia's Shaboozey, whose 2022 release, Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die , offered songs for a post-"Old Town Road" country-rap world, cuts through two tracks with his unforgettable tone. "BLACKBIIRD" features the vocals of four Black women — Tanner Adell , Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts. This soulful cover of The Beatles ' classic about Black women's plights and resilience during the American Civil Rights movement puts its subjects in a spotlight that country radio rarely does, bringing home the reality that opportunities for artists like these have scarcely grown in the years since Martell broke ground.

9. It saddles up over the pop-country middle ground.

On Cowboy Carter , Beyoncé is a pop star actively in conversation with the idea of country music, and traversing the distance between those genres seems to have made her consider the existing relationship between them. In two moments on the album, she enlists singers who have been blurring that binary for quite some time: Miley Cyrus and Post Malone . Miley, of course, is the daughter of "Achy Breaky Heart" sensation Billy Ray Cyrus , and in her own pursuit of a pop identity, fiddled with Mike WiLL trap, Flaming Lips psychedelia, glam rock and country pop before settling on the centering sounds of last year's Endless Summer Vacation , which earned her a record of the year Grammy for "Flowers." For his part, Post broke out as a watercolor trap rockstar and has since shifted toward a sound more in line with his Texas roots. Both seem to resonate with the ambiguity Bey sees running through the music.

10. There's more beneath the rhinestone jewel case.

Beyond the many featured guests, other behind-the-scenes contributors help tell the story. The-Dream , Pharrell , No I.D., Raphael Saadiq , Ryan Tedder, Ryan Beatty and Swizz Beatz all helped produce the record. It also boasts an incredibly accomplished cast of supporting players: Pulitzer-winning folk revivalist Giddens , Grammy-winning soul man Jon Batiste , session luminary Nile Rodgers, gospel pedal steelist Robert Randolph , blues rocker Gary Clark Jr. , hip-hop banjoist Willie Jones and the incomparable Stevie Wonder . The incredible variety of names and skills is the secret sauce behind Cowboy Carter 's sprawling vision.
