What is Travel Soccer? A Parent’s Guide

' src=

If your child is interested in playing soccer at a more competitive level, you may have heard about travel soccer.

Travel soccer is a step up from recreational soccer and is designed for players who want to take their skills to the next level .

op travel soccer

Is travel soccer worth it? Is it a good fit for your kid, or should they play rec instead? In this article, we’ll explore what travel soccer is, how it differs from recreational soccer, and what you can expect if your child decides to join a travel soccer team.

Understanding Travel Soccer

If you are looking for a more competitive level of youth soccer , then travel might be the right choice for your child! Teams are made up of players who have tried out and been selected based on their skills and abilities. With this said, there may be instances where a child could not make the team.

Travel soccer is different from recreational soccer in that it requires a bigger time commitment and costs more. Players are expected to attend practices and games regularly and may need to travel to games and tournaments that are more regional than local. So, instead of playing in your town every Saturday morning, you may have to travel 45 min. to compete against another town in your state.

Teams are typically more competitive than recreational teams and may participate in higher-level leagues or tournaments. This can be a great way for players to challenge themselves and improve their game.

It is important to note that travel soccer is not for everyone. It requires a significant time, energy, and financial commitment from both the player and their family. Before deciding to join a travel soccer team, it is important to consider your goals, abilities, and personal circumstances to determine if it is the right choice for you.

Benefits of Travel Soccer

If you’re considering travel soccer for your child, you may be wondering what benefits it can offer. Here are some of the advantages of playing travel:

Skill Development

One of the main benefits of competitive soccer is that it provides players with the opportunity to develop their skills more often.

Not always but many travel teams have more experienced coaches who can help players improve their technique, tactics, and physical fitness. Coaches are still volunteers (not paid) but take it more seriously than a rec program.

Players are also exposed to a higher level of competition, which can help them develop their skills more quickly.

Exposure and Opportunities

Travel soccer can provide players with exposure to club soccer coaches and directors.

Players who perform well in these situations may be invited to participate in elite camps or tournaments, which can further enhance their skills and increase their chances of playing at the next tier in U.S. soccer which is playing for a local club team .

Teamwork and Social Skills

op travel soccer

Sports, in general, can help players develop valuable social and teamwork skills. Players must work together to achieve their goals and learn to communicate effectively with their teammates. This can help them develop leadership skills, build confidence, and learn how to work well with others.

In addition, travel soccer often involves traveling to different cities for games and tournaments. This can provide players with the opportunity to meet new people, hang out with their buddies outside of soccer, and develop a sense of independence and responsibility.

Requirements for Travel Soccer

There are certain requirements for travel soccer and we’ll explore them in this section.

Age and Skill Level

Most teams are organized by age group, with teams ranging from U9 to U19. The age group that you will play in will depend on your birth year. Please note that travel soccer tends to be more popular in the younger age groups where there are more opportunities. When you get to U14 and older, there are school teams (middle school and high school) thrown into the mix.

Commitment and Dedication

Travel requires more commitment of time and effort than a rec program. Players are usually expected to attend multiple practices per week, as well as weekend games and tournaments.

Additionally, players are expected to maintain a certain level of fitness and conditioning outside of practice. If you are considering joining a team, it is important to be prepared to make this level of commitment.

Financial Considerations

Travel soccer can also be more expensive than recreational soccer. In addition to the cost of equipment and uniforms, players may be required to pay for tournament fees, travel expenses, and other expenses related to the team. It is important to consider these costs before trying out for atravel soccer team .

In our town, the rec program is $65 whereas the travel program is $250. This is still much lower than a soccer club which could be more than $5,000 when all is said and done.

How to Get Started in Travel Soccer

If you’re interested in joining a team, there are a few key steps you need to take to get started. Here are some things to consider:

Finding a Local Team

Most towns will have a rec and travel program that are associated with each other. Go to your local youth sports website and dig into the information provided.

For the upcoming season, tryouts usually happen in the spring. If you want to play in the fall of 2024, tryouts is probably spring or early summer of 2024. You should not wait until the summer to start figuring it out.

If your local town does not have a travel team, check neighboring towns to join. In most cases, you don’t need to be from that town to play on their team.

Tryouts and Selection Process

Most teams hold tryouts to select players for their teams. As I mentioned, these tryouts are typically held months before, and they give coaches a chance to evaluate players’ skills and abilities.

They’ll be evaluating your technical skills, tactical abilities, physical fitness, and mental toughness. If you’re selected for a travel team, congratulations! You’ll have the opportunity to play against some of the best local teams in your area, and to develop your skills as a player.

Potential Challenges of Travel Soccer

Here are some potential challenges that you should consider before signing up for a travel soccer team.

Time Commitment

Travel soccer requires a significant time commitment. You will likely have to attend several practices a week, as well as games on weekends.

If you play flag football, tackle football, or any other fall sport, it could be tough juggling it all. I would reach out to the soccer director and figure out if it’s doable to play another sport. If not, travel soccer should keep you busy!

Travel Demands

As the name suggests, travel soccer involves a lot of travel. You may have to travel to other cities or even other states for games and tournaments.

This can be expensive and time-consuming, especially for larger families or families who are already strapped for time.

But, since it’s a local team, carpooling is always recommended for practices and games.

Balancing School and Soccer

If a child hasn’t played a competitive sport before, it could be challenging to balance soccer and school . Most practices are in the evening so it’s important they do any homework in the small window they have after school. This will make your and their life so much easier.

To Conclude – JUST HAVE FUN

For players (and parents), it’s important to remember that soccer is a game and supposed to be fun. Try your best and have fun. It’s easy to do both!

It’s also essential to prioritize development over wins and losses. Have a long-term mindset when it comes to getting better. Very little happens in a week but a lot can happen in six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travel soccer is usually more expensive than recreational soccer due to additional expenses such as travel, leagues, and tournament fees. However, the benefits of playing travel soccer include a higher level of competition and more opportunities for skill development. Ultimately, whether travel soccer is worth the extra cost depends on the player’s goals and priorities.

Travel soccer is a type of club soccer that emphasizes competitive play and requires travel to games and tournaments usually within state borders. On the other hand, club soccer is the next tier up and usually has paid coaches and more travel requirements. For this reason, club soccer costs much more than travel soccer.

The travel soccer season typically starts in the fall and spring. However, some clubs may have different schedules or offer year-round play. It’s important to check with your local club for specific season dates.

You can find travel soccer teams near you by searching for your local youth sports organization. Typically, they will have important dates and a registration form for tryouts. You can also get recommendations from other parents and coaches in the community.

Format and Teams Finalized for 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

CHICAGO (March 1, 2024) – U.S. Soccer has finalized the format for the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup which will include 96 teams from across the amateur and professional ranks playing a total of 95 games from March to September.

In a historic shift for the tournament, the upcoming First Round will mark the first time since 2008 that all 32 matchups will be exclusively between amateur and professional teams. Overall, this year’s edition of the tournament will feature the most First Round matchups between amateur and professional teams in the tournament’s 109-year history, more than doubling the previous amount of 16.

U.S. Soccer will be making its largest-ever investment in the tournament in 2024. With new commercial partners – including Marriott Bonvoy, Michelob Ultra, New York Life, and Nike – U.S. Soccer has prioritized enhanced financial incentives for participating teams, including significantly increased travel reimbursement. The Federation’s financial commitment also represents the most significant effort to date towards promotion of the tournament, underscoring U.S. Soccer’s dedication to fostering a more vibrant Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup experience for teams and fans alike.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is U.S. Soccer's Club Championship and has crowned a champion annually since 1914 (with the exception of 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19). The historic tournament is conducted on a single-game, knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer and is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States and the world's third-longest continuously run national cup tournament.

The First Round of the 2024 U.S. Open Cup will consist of 32 games with 32 amateur clubs from the Open Division meeting 32 professional teams from Division III. The Open Division representatives include 11 Qualifying Round winners, 11 USL League Two teams, eight NPSL teams, the USASA National Amateur Cup champion and the UPSL Spring Champion. Division III representatives include 12 USL League One teams, nine NISA teams and 11 MLS Next Pro teams. The winners of the First Round will play each other in the Second Round of the tournament.

The winners of the Second Round will then be matched up against the 16 Division II professional teams from the USL Championship which will enter the competition in the Third Round. The remaining eight USL Championship teams and eight MLS teams will enter in the Round of 32, along with the winners from the Third Round. The eight USL Championship teams include 2023 league champion Phoenix Rising FC and the next seven best teams from 2023 standings enter Round of 32.

The MLS clubs participating in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup, and their MLS Next Pro teams, were excluded from the selection process for the 2024 U.S. Open Cup, which was determined based on results in the 2023 MLS regular season. See below for the full list of participating teams.

"First and foremost, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to all our members for their invaluable input over the past couple of months— sharing with us all of the reasons the U.S. Open Cup is so great, and what we can do to make it even better,” said U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson. “After extensive discussions, we have put together a competitive format specific to the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, promising exciting matchups from the First Round and through the entire tournament. U.S. Soccer values the tradition and importance of the U.S. Open Cup, and we will continue to have conversations with all our members to explore avenues for enhancing future editions of the tournament and how we all work together to grow soccer in every community in the country”.

About the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

Now in its 109 th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has crowned a champion since 1914 in every year except 2020 and 2021. The history-filled tournament is conducted on a single-game-knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.

The 2024 U.S. Open Cup winner will earn $300,000 in prize money, a berth in the 2025 Concacaf Champions League and have its name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy – one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports – now on permanent display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Frisco, Texas. The runner-up will earn $100,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $25,000 cash prize.

Houston Dynamo FC are the defending Open Cup champions, having earned the club's second tournament title thanks to a 2-1 victory over Inter Miami last Sept. 27 in front of a capacity crowd at Fort Lauderdale’s DRV PNK Stadium.

A third of the Arizona House is out of the country. And this is a bad thing?

Opinion: seventeen arizona legislators left for a week-long junket in the middle of the session. the question is, how can we convince them to stay there.

op travel soccer

A bipartisan group of 17 Arizona legislators left on Tuesday, smack in the middle of the legislative session, for an all-expenses-paid five-day excursion to Israel.

Naturally, they’ll continue to cash their per diem checks , the pay we taxpayers provide them to cover their expenses while at the state Capitol.

Or, as it turns out, at the Wailing Wall.

What with 17 members of the 60-member House away on spring break — including House Speaker Ben Toma — work at the Capitol has slowed to a trickle, leaving me to wonder.

How can we get the rest of them to follow?

Yes, the Legislature really passed these bills

Consider the accomplishments of our present pack of lawmakers.

They’ve proposed bills that would make it harder to vote, harder to count ballots and easier to make mistakes. (Unless you’re one of those who thinks that hand counting an estimated 240 million filled-in bubbles is best left to humans rather than machines.)

And just before their trip, the House passed a bill that would end the state’s insanely popular early voting program — the one used by 80% of voters.

They’ve passed bills aimed at providing legal cover to ranchers who kill undocumented migrants crossing their land and parents whose kids run around with guns .

We face a labor shortage in this state, but our leaders’ answer to that is to pass bills making it as difficult as possible for undocumented immigrants — the ones who for years have built our houses and cooked our meals and picked our produce — to continue working here.

The state budget is about a billion dollars in the red, so naturally, our Legislature is busy passing bills to cannibalize Maricopa County and penalize pokey drivers . (Never mind that it’s already against state law to drive too slowly in the fast lane).

They're not exactly solving real problems

Empowerment Scholarship Account fraud exists , but don’t look for the Legislature to tighten controls on school vouchers to at least make sure the kids exist.

Instead, they’re busy passing bills to exempt themselves from the state’s Open Meetings Law and to allow citizens to sue any government agency that promotes “Marxist” ideas . You know, stuff like riding bikes or buses or eating less meat.

They even held a hearing on a bill that would have awarded Donald Trump our electoral votes, months before we even go to the polls. Fortunately, that was too much even for some of our leading lights.

But the fact that a bill like that even rated a hearing?

At least there's a break from the crazy

Then there is the bill to designate Pluto as the state’s official planet. Actually, that may represent some of their best work — though, really, wouldn't Planet Goofy make more sense?

Consider Republican Sen. Justine Wadsack’s bill requiring real-estate agents to tell prospective homebuyers about an area’s political representation.

Can you imagine moving in and finding out the neighbors are ... gasp! ... Democrats?

I could go on. And on. Except now, for one blessed week, I don’t have to.

Our 17 traveling lawmakers have given us all a welcome spring break from the crazy.

Watch Champions League Soccer: Livestream Bayern Munich vs. Lazio From Anywhere

Can the Bavarians turn things around? They face the Italian giants in this last-16 tie at the Allianz Arena.

op travel soccer

The mission is clear for Harry Kane and co. as Bayern Munich look to overturn a one-goal deficit at home against Lazio in the second leg of this delicately poised UEFA Champions League last-16 matchup.

Ciro Immobile's penalty gave Lazio an unexpected win over Bayern in the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome last month.

The Eagles will likely have to quell an onslaught from the home side's attack, with history very much on the side of the German team coming into this decisive fixture. Bayern have won their last six UEFA competition matches at home against Italian clubs and have never lost both legs of a Champions League round of 16 tie.

Below, we'll outline the best  live TV streaming services  for watching every game wherever you are in the world.

Harry Kane of Bayern Munich, looking to his right.

Harry Kane has bagged an impressive 20 goals in Bayern Munich's last 15 matches across all competitions.

Bayern Munich vs. Lazio: When and where?

Bayern Munich play Lazio at Allianz Arena in Munich on Tuesday, March 5 . Kickoff is set for  9 p.m. CET local time in Germany, making it an 8 p.m. GMT   kickoff in the UK, 3 p.m. ET or 12 p.m. PT in the US and Canada, and 7 a.m. AEDT on Wednesday, March 6, in Australia .

How to watch Bayern Munich vs. Lazio online from anywhere using a VPN

If you're unable to view Champions League matches locally, you may need a different way to watch the action, which is where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN can stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you want an extra layer of privacy for your devices and log-ins while traveling and using various Wi-Fi networks.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to access the game. If your internet provider or mobile carrier assigns an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can fix that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. Be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it suspects is circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Paramount Plus

Watch the champions league in the us from $6 a month.

Paramount Plus has two main subscription plans in the US: Essential for $6 a month and Premium for $12 a month. Both offer coverage of the Champions League.

The cheaper Essential option has ads for on-demand streaming. It also lacks live CBS feeds and the ability to download shows to watch offline later. Newcomers can take advantage of a 30-day free trial, while students may qualify for a 25% discount. Black Friday savings are also still available, though we don't know how long for.

Quick tips for streaming UEFA Champions League matches using a VPN

  • With four variables at play (your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN), your experience and success when streaming Champions League games may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the game after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs including Roku don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main sites for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • Remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We recommend  Brave .

Valencia defender Diakhaby to undergo knee surgery after gruesome injury in La Liga

MADRID — Valencia defender Mouctar Diakhaby will travel to France for surgery to repair his dislocated right knee, the Spanish club said on Tuesday.

Diakhaby sustained the gruesome injury on Saturday in the final minutes of the 2-2 draw against Real Madrid. He was carried off on a stretcher after Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni crashed into him inside the area.

Players from both teams immediately called for help and looked distraught after realizing the seriousness of the injury.

The 27-year-old Diakhaby showed up on crutches at the Valencia training center and visited with his teammates on Tuesday. He spent 48 hours under medical observation in a hospital.

Diakhaby said, “Unfortunately, injuries are a part of the game.”

On social media, he added, “The battle will be long but I am ready for it and I will do everything possible to return to the field as soon as possible and even stronger.”

World Soccer Talk

Bellerin says sprawling 2026 World Cup will be hard on fans

R eal Betis defender Hector Bellerin is perhaps one of the more well-versed soccer players in the world. The Spaniard is a quality player in a solid team in one of the top European leagues. However, he also has interests in a series of other ventures as well.

During his time with Premier League club Arsenal , Bellerin became a significant shareholder of Forest Green Rovers. The now League Two side is currently one of the leading teams across the continent on environmental and sustainability concerns. The defender also previously pledged to plant 3,000 trees for every Arsenal victory following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Along with environmental causes, Bellerin also freely discusses politics and social issues as well. The right-back was invited to speak at the prestigious Oxford Union in 2021. The discussion covered a plethora of notable topics. Other high-profile celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Bill Clinton, and Diego Maradona previously made appearances with the group.

Bellerin claims soccer is becoming more ‘elitist’ ahead of 2026 World Cup

Bellerin now recently sat down to conduct a lengthy and wide-ranging interview with BBC Sport . While he was asked a series of questions, the defender made interesting comments regarding FIFA and the 2026 World Cup . Bellerin claimed that the governing body is focusing solely on money, rather than the actual fans.

“Football every day is more about margins, about can we make more money and less about the people that support it and the people that truly make football great,” Bellerin told the news outlet.

As far as the 2026 World Cup itself, the defender does not like how spread out the tournament will be. The competition is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. “It is becoming every day something more elitist, in my opinion, and having it in three different countries makes it more difficult for fans to follow their nation,” continued the Betis star.

“We are losing a little bit of the essence of what football truly is and who are the people that actually make football, which is the people who follow us and watch us every weekend.”

“I understand that football, like every single industry, needs to modernize itself to be able to follow changes in society, but sometimes it can’t go that far.”

Average fans will find travel costly at the upcoming tournament

Bellerin certainly has a point about the sheer distance between the host cities of the upcoming World Cup. Traveling from Vancouver to Miami, both host areas of the tournament, would be over 3,000 total miles one way. This is the same distance as London is from Baghdad.

The lengthy distance does not, however, mean that larger countries such as the United States cannot host a World Cup. Nevertheless, central fixtures in the later knockout rounds could lower overall costs for fans.

The current round of 16 fixtures are in Vancouver, Mexico City, New Jersey and several places in between. The average fan of a team potentially wanting to travel all over these areas could not afford to make the trips.

Money, however, as Bellerin alluded to in the interview, certainly motivates FIFA’s final decisions. This was evident in the organization moving the entire tournament’s schedule to accommodate Qatar in 2022.
