London Heathrow Airport: The Ultimate 3-7 Hour LHR Layover Guide (by a pilot)

One of my favorite short layovers ever : London Heathrow (LHR). Amazing lounges, easy and efficient public transportation, and endless options to eat/sleep/dine/explore. You can always count on London being a great layover.

  • Should I leave Heathrow on a short layover ?
  • What is there do do inside Heathrow ?
  • What are the best lounges at LHR ?
  • Which lounges can I access ?
  • What is there to do close to Heathrow on a layover ?
  • Renting a car to explore London on a layover
  • Best tours to join on a short layover
  • How long does it take to get through security at Heathrow ?

As the busiest airport in the UK, Heathrow offers a vast array of international flights and fantastic connections on over 80 airlines. This means you will likely have the chance to try it out for yourself someday! But don’t worry – whether you have a 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 hour layover in London, there is a lot you can do to have fun.

As an airline pilot flying internationally from New York’s JFK airport , I normally layover in London multiple times per month . Here’s a little foreshadowing, if I haven’t made it obvious already: I love it. It’s an epic city.

And for those not looking to leave Heathrow airport, fret not – the lounges, restaurants, and terminals are world class . You just have to know where to go.

Wondering which suitcase to buy before your epic London layover? Here are 5 Suitcases Airline Pilots Use and Why You Need One .

Should I leave London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) on a short layover?

That depends. There are many factors in play:

  • Is it a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday? These are busy days and security lines will be longer.
  • Are there planned strikes by public transportation workers or taxi workers? These are usually announced ahead of time and cause massive delays.
  • Is the weather bad enough to create chaos with cancellations, delays, and rebookings?
  • Are you arriving on an international flight? Do you need a visa to enter UK territory? If so, going through customs may add time. (US passports are eligible for entry through fast-lane visa-free passport scanners, saving ample time)
  • Do you have bags to collect and check back in? Check-in lines could be long, though you can save time by checking them in at a transfer desk before exiting the secure zone.
  • Are you arriving at night? This may call for a short hotel layover instead of going out and exploring.
  • Do you have Priority Pass and less than 4 hours before your connecting flight? If so, it may make more sense to spend your layover at an excellent free lounge.

This summer is extremely busy, and airports and airlines are suffering from short staffing . Because of this, you can expect long lines at check-in, security, help desks, and more. Plan extra time for this.

What you can do inside London Heathrow International Airport on a layover

For those who prefer not to leave the airport, fret not – there’s a lot to do.

You have 6 terminals to chose from, each offering an array of restaurants, shops, and lounges. Many of these lounges offer free access for Priority Pass members , while others are reserved for business/first class fliers and members. Check below.

Some of the restaurants here are world class, and there’s everything from delicate sushi to fried chicken to feast one.

Many of the lounges have excellent wining and dining, showers, and even spas. The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse has a wonderful outdoor terrace, while the No1 Lounge has a separate TV Lounge room.

And if you really want to get some exercise, there’s miles of corridors and hallways to explore. If your terminal isn’t enough, it’s super easy to take a bus to another one, though you will likely have to pass through security again if you do.

Best LHR Lounges (and what you need to know first)

Most of the lounges at LHR Heathrow are excellent, and some are even world class. Take the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse for example, boasting everything from Peloton bikes to an outdoor terrace – with champagne and fine dining in between. I prefer it over even the flagship KLM Crowne Lounge in Amsterdam !

Priority Pass members can rejoice – there are several wonderful lounges included for free! The No1 Lounge , for example, features a spa, showers, movie theatre, and a very diverse bar. At this time, the showers are still not operating.

AmEx Platinum members have access to the world-renowned Centurion Lounge in Terminal 3, with top notch fare and a comfortable, but slightly cozy environment.

Lounges at LHR included with Priority Pass

The No1 Lounge Heathrow

As a benefit to Priority Pass members , Terminal 3 is home to both the Club Aspire Lounge and the No1 Lounge Heathrow complimentary. Both are excellent complimentary options.

Those transiting Terminal 5 can enjoy yet another excellent Club Aspire Lounge.

Lounges at LHR that allow purchase of a day pass

Unless you’re flying in business or first class, you might be worried about finding a nice lounge to relax in between flights. But luckily, most terminals at LHR have at least one lounge that allows purchasing of a day pass.

Here they are, with their respective prices (which may not be 100% up to date):

Terminal 2:

  • Plaza Premium Lounge (£40/3 hours, £65/6 hours)
  • Lufthansa Business Lounge ($74)
  • United Club ($59)

Terminal 3:

  • No1 Lounge (£36 online)
  • Club Aspire (£35 online)
  • American Airlines Lounge ($59, currently closed)

Terminal 5:

  • Club Aspire (£40 online)
  • Plaza Premium (£35/3 hours, £65/6 hours)

Exclusive airline lounges

Air Canada, American Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa, Qantas, SkyTeam (T4), and United all have their own respective lounges. Most of these are reserved for business and first class passengers, but some offer paid options for those flying in economy or comfort.

There are typically also yearly options available for those who travel constantly (and always with the same airline(s).)

The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse in T3 is particularly worldly, offering multiple restaurants, peloton bikes, showers, a pool table area, and even an outdoor patio with epic views of LHR. Those flying business class on Virgin Atlantic and SkyTeam partners have access.

Catch some sleep at an LHR Day Room

Though there are no hotels inside the secure area at Heathrow Airport (which means you’ll have to exit and go through customs/security), there are some on or near the airport that offer day rooms.

Day rooms are my newest dangled “travel hack”, because there’s nothing more refreshing than catching up on rest and taking a shower between flights. They’re actually my biggest travel hack to beating jet lag .

The best day rooms around LHR include:

  • The Aerotel in T3 arrivals, which offers blocks of 3, 6, and 9 hours.
  • The Hilton Garden Inn Terminals 2 & 3 , step away from arrivals. Note there is another Hilton Garden Inn on Bath Road.
  • Next to Terminal 4, you can stay at the Heathrow Hilton or the Premier Inn just a touch further.
  • By Terminal 5, there’s a Sofitel connected by a covered walkway. The Sofitel is for sure the nicest Heathrow area hotel.
  • The Hilton Garden Inn , just steps from Hatton Cross, one stop away from Heathrow on the Picadilly line.

These hotels and many others offer shuttle service. My personal best way to snag a cheap room is on dayuse.com .

Going out and exploring on a short Heathrow layover

Even after having traveled to over 80 countries , I still have to contend that London is one of my favorite cities. And excellent public transport makes it one of the most accessible cities in the world, even on a short layover.

You have so many options on places to go and how to get to them – you can tailor your layover to any level of exploration. I’ve found that even after many, many layovers, London just does not get old. There’s always more to do.

So whether you see a lot or a little, you’ll be glad you did. Here are my recommendations on what to do during your London layover.

Getting to downtown London from LHR – quick!

Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus, Harry Potter. Whatever your rhyme or reason is for visiting London, you’ll be glad to know there is a fantastically fast way to get downtown from LHR airport.

It’s namely the Heathrow Express , offering direct service to downtown with a journey time of about 15 minutes. Though it’s more expensive than the tube (metro/underground), I highly recommend it. The underground/tube often has delays and many stops, making it a much more tedious way to get to London from LHR.

Renting a car for the day and going more in depth

Though public transportation in London is excellent, you may prefer the flexibility of having your own car. This unlocks the ability to see even more of the area, including:

  • The Royal Observatory of Greenwich, located at the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude)
  • Oxford University and its Museum of Natural History
  • The Windsor Castle
  • The incredible Brooklands Museum, featuring everything from rockets to the Concorde
  • With more time, the coast of Brighton

In my experience, Hertz offers the most reliable and convenient rentals.

Just beware of parking downtown, which is mighty inconvenient and expensive.

Join a free (or cheap) guided tour of the city

London is easily one of the most walkable cities in the world. I would know – I’ve walked close to 100 miles around the city.

But to really learn about the history, culture, and hidden gems of the city, I highly recommend a guided tour – especially if you’re in a hurry.

Otherwise, here’s a sample itinerary I curated for your viewing pleasure:

Some of the sites you won’t want to miss include:

  • Buckingham Palace – you can even visit a State Room from 22 July to 2 October and some dates in winter! Changing the Guard, an amazing show, occurs most days at 10:45AM
  • Go shopping in the historic area of St. James.
  • Hit up Westminster Abbey . Don’t miss out on that giant clock tower they call Big Ben somewhere around there.
  • Visit Churchill’s War Rooms for a chilling and enlightening experience
  • Ride the London Eye for epic views of the city
  • Walk through SoHo and experience London’s most vibrant neighborhood
  • Tour the 900-year old Tower of London and learn about the medieval history of the city
  • Take an elevator to the top of the Tower Bridge
  • Head up the the observation deck at The Shard , that pointy building that rises high above the city skyline

Each of these sites is located near an Underground (Metro/Tube) station, and the order listed above is a good way to do it. Note that it would probably take an entire afternoon (4-6 hours at least) to see all of that in a hurry, so you’ll have to pick and choose.

Eat local, classic British fare

Fish n’ chips, a nice meat pie, bangers n’ mash, Shepherd’s Pie – all nice boring British food for you to try.

The Indian food is where it’s really at. Let’s bring the spice and the taste. There’s no lack of great Indian food here.

My favorite Indian place? Dishoom , a local favorite with several locations across town, is flabbergastingly good. Probably the best in London.

For a great fish n’ chips, the Mayfair Chippy is your spot. And for a local chain with fantastic fare, try The Ivy .

If you want to eat at one of Gordon Ramsay’s excellent dining experiences, make sure to book ahead.

And lastly, great coffee is everywhere. For a unique experience, try Attendant Coffee Roasters , situated in what used to be a Victorian public toilet.

Getting back to Heathrow on time for your next flight

In recent years, we’ve experienced unparalleled travel chaos . That meant dealing with travel disruptions such as delays, cancellations, late bags, and more.

Luckily, staffing is already better as of 2023 and it’s only improving from here.

That being said, you should still plan to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours before any international flight and 1.5-2 hours before a domestic flight. Whether you use an Uber, rental car, the tube, or the Heathrow Express – always plan in extra time.

Best of luck with your London travel plans!

It was such an interesting and amazing experience as a late Christmas present from my grandparents (whom my grandfather is a very big Arsenal fan). We did the Legend Tour with Perry Groves. We managed to touch the pitch, which is very rare. The tour took us though the dressing rooms, tunnel, dugouts, car park and even the very interesting and unique museum. There was some great photo taking opportunities throughout the experience. The even have their own coin mangle machine, which was an added bonus. • MMR19 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Terrific Stadium Tour We visited here in August '23 for our son's 12th Birthday. He and his older brother are big Arsenal Fans. My youngest has a Young Gunner membership so his tour was free of charge and he also received 10% off all purchases (except photos & personalisation on strips) in the official shop so a great bonus. No need to pre-book, just turned up having purchased tickets online in advance. Small queue which moved quickly. Self guided tour with Arsenal logo earphones which you take home. I'd pre purchased the guide book which was really nice quality and full of interesting facts. We were in the stadium for about 1.5 to 2 hours (quite a lot of this was spent in the shop!) and I have to say it was very interesting and impressive. We had access all areas except the press room as they were getting organised for a match the next day. I'm not really a football fan but having done other Stadium tours (UK & overseas) over the years this was by far the best. Unfortunately we didn't know there was a museum at the other side of the Stadium so we missed this - schoolboy error! Be prepared to spend a small fortune on coins, posters/Personalised photos and of course kit in the shop. Read more Written October 6, 2023

tour of heathrow airport

What an amazing thing to do during a layover. We enjoyed learning about the history and seeing the sights, particularly the chance to see Buckingham Palace and the Queen's guards! Appreciated the convenience of being picked up at Heathrow Airport and returned there at the end in time for our flight. Just perfect.

A Behind-the-Scenes Tour of London’s Heathrow Airport

By alastair long.

From Heathrow With Love – Photo: Alastair Long | AirlineReporter

Last month, I attended an ultimate behind-the-scenes airport tour, courtesy of London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR). LHR’s Digital Communications Manager, Chris Loy, welcomed a select group of aviation publications to showcase its daily operations and on behalf of AirlineReporter  I was thrilled to be a part of it.

I always enjoy traveling through LHR, especially Terminal 5 (T5), and revel in what is generally a calm and serene travel experience. This is despite handling more than 75 million passengers and about 1.5 million tons of cargo (the non self-loading variety) per year.

I compare this to the utter chaos that is London’s Luton Airport (LTN) while they undergo extensive construction, or the holiday-maker maelstrom that is Gatwick Airport (LGW) during the summer. That said, I have never transited through LHR. Nor have I ever suffered from any extensive flight delays at the airport.

“Yes, transiting is an operational challenge at Heathrow,” remarks LHR Filming Coordinator and Airside Safety Officer, Joe Audcent. “The airfield is just so big from one end to another.” Chris and Joe would be our intrepid tour guides and I was looking forward to learning more about my hometown airport.

We certainly got the impression of vastness, having ascended 285 feet up the highest air traffic control tower in the UK. It was impressive staring out at the airport’s maze-like strips of grass and concrete encircled by the greater London suburbs in the background and Windsor Castle in the distance. The tiny lift to the summit reminded me of a cross between the Eiffel Tower lifts and Captain Nemo’s Nautilus.

Speaking of suburbia, many of you will know that the UK is currently engulfed in a fierce debate about increasing airport capacity; LHR is at 98% capacity. It is an emotive issue, dividing public opinion quite sharply and has dogged government policy on runway expansion for many years.

I won’t debate the rights and wrongs. However, I personally say build two more runways at Heathrow and one at Gatwick please. I suppose I nailed my colors to more than one mast there – I’m not sure it works, but you catch my drift.

Hmm... which line do we follow? Photo: - Alastair Long | AirlineReporter

The airport celebrated its 70th anniversary on May 31st 2016 and in that time, it has gone from six runways in an approximate “Star of David” formation, to three runways up to the 1980s, and now the two incumbent 09 and 27 runways.

My quick snap of the pictorial timeline in LHR’s airside ops building is crude, but it gives you a good idea of what launching points the hub used to have. Of course, the runways intersected each other and could never have sustained the sort of modern traffic types and volumes that the airport welcomes today. As Joe explained, operating the original third runway was only possible with a decent southerly wind and without operating the other two runways at the same time.

TAP Portugal give us a wave – Photo: Alastair Long | AirlineReporter

From a prime position just in front of a taxiway to the runway edge, we were given ample time to stand, sit, watch and photograph all of the colorful liveries take to the London skies. Think child in a sweet shop and you get close to the level of awe and excitement that I felt. I have never been up so close and personal to these winged beasts in motion while not actually being on board. We even got a wave from TAP’s flight deck to boot! Easily pleased I am.

This was an aviation safari. In fact, Mr Bridges, was so adept at doing circuits around the airfield, racing alongside little and large aircraft as they jostled for position, that it reminded me of the film Jurassic Park when Sam Neill and those two pesky kids run amongst a herd of dinosaurs, trying to avoid getting eaten by the T-Rex. We didn’t get eaten of course, instead we ate a delicious lunch airside at Terminal 2 (the “Queen’s Terminal”).

We were all surprised about how many 747s were milling about, almost like bison grazing. They’re beautiful aircraft, but they don’t give off a roar when advancing. Let’s perhaps change the analogy to lions. Ironically enough, some of the smaller aircraft were noisier than some of the big birds. The Dreamliner moved like a silent predator though, with its distinctive noise-reducing “crinkle-cut” engine nacelles.

The LHR Airside Operations building, including its roof top, was our next stop. We were privy to observing the control room, where a mere scrap of paper on the runway is likely to set off a flashing red FOD (Foreign Object Debris) alarm on the monitor. Again, I was impressed at the calm atmosphere in the building. Yes, had there been an emergency to manage then things might have looked slightly different.

The sheer volume of traffic movements belies any calmness. Joe recounted a story of how an inbound aircraft inadvertently put a number of aircraft into the holding pattern because, upon landing, the pilots got hopelessly lost looking for their exit and effectively blocked the runway. Out came one of those distinctive yellow safety cars to guide these guys home.

Airside Ops Snow Ploughs - Photo: Alastair Long | AirlineReporter

That’s not to say that LHR operations have always been smooth. The airport got absolutely slaughtered by the national press in December 2010 when heavier than expected snowfall caused chaos. In the wake of the storm, airport management were accused of chronic underinvestment. For example, the airport at the time lacked heavy-duty runway snowplows. They do not lack them anymore!

Speaking of cool gadgets, we then live-tested the parking stand apparatus (well, one of our party did). With arms out-stretched and walking carefully along the yellow parking line like a driver demonstrating to traffic cops that he’s sober, Gary Claridge-King from Airliners.net followed the computerized arrows on screen to ensure an accurate and safe arrival.

As if the airport tour was not exciting enough, we had also been invited to explore the outside and then the inside of an empty British Airways  Dreamliner . There to welcome us abroad the aircraft was BA’s Turnaround Manager, Declan Casbon, and Corporate PR Executive, Anya Fisher. Standing underneath the composite beast, we could not resist tapping against the airframe to listen for differing sound resonance.

The onboard tour included a sit down in the flight deck and a peek at the fore and aft crew rest areas. However, I spent most of my time in a front row seat up in first class. It had been an early start and I could feel myself literally starting to doze when Chris came along to continue the tour. I thought he might have had to pry me off the seat. Or call the British Transport Police to do it.

The day nearly complete, it was time for a round-up over a few beers at the “Flying Chariot” in the Queen’s Terminal. A new television series, “Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport” premiered on May 30th on the UK television channel ITV, and new episodes are airing on Mondays. Chris, Joe and many others at LHR have been working hard on this project. This series also provides a chance for a lucky viewer to win an airside tour, similar to this one, through the #votemeairside competition .

I have to say that this was my favorite AvGeek experience. The small group, the ability to take close-up photos, or simply to listen to highly professional individuals talk passionately about something that is more than just a job made it more personal. The day at LHR was the Holy Grail of aviation experiences and I am glad that I could share!

I can understand why LHR might be happy to see gratuitous insults directed at LGW as they plot to further ruin the lives of millions of Londoners. As a mere passenger, I do not recognise that LGW is a maelstrom indeed prefer the experience to LHR. Ideally we should close down LHR which is one of the most polluted, congested, passenger-unfriendly airports on earth. We managed to build a decent airport in Hong Kong but the challenge seems to overwhelm us at home.

' src=

Fair comment, although my experience of both LGW and LTN is my own as a passenger. I’ve used both of them extensively over the last two years, which admittedly has coloured my view somewhat. Out of interest, where would you build or expand in the UK, if LHR was closed? Hong Kong Airport is off the main island. Speaking of which, what did you think of the Boris Island idea?

I first flew into Heathrow in 1960. It was terrible then and is now worse. Expanding it will make it much worse. The Thames estuary is the only sensible place. It is the only location to build a future-proof airport and would allow the only possible semsible sokution for Heathrow, which is to raze it to the ground.

@lefoudubaron

Hard to see airport expansion shifting eastwards to a super-hub on the Thames Estuary, although I heard Daniel Moylan speak passionately about it a few years ago. He made a compelling case, but the Davies Commission vetoed it. There’ll probably be a runway on Mars before a decision is ever taken about UK capacity. Remember Cublington?

Sadly, Davies had only one brief which was to expand Heathrow.

' src=

Great article, I hope to fly into Heathrow someday. I just amazes me how so much air traffic moves using two runways. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Bruce. Glad you enjoyed it! Lifting the bonnet to see the operation in action was remarkable.

FYI, Alastair and other Planeiacs, there’s a NEW ( published in 2016 ) pictorial book about LHR. It’s EXCELLENT – with aboundant historical and current images. It has at LEAST 125 pages ). I bought my copy just yesterday; at AJ Publications ( formerly known as The Aviation Hobby Shop or TAHS ). ( It’s but a short bus ride from LHR; via Bath Road, on the 222 bus ). I don’t have the full details at the moment; as they’re upstairs in my hotel room. However, if you do a Search for AJ Publications ( or close to this ) you can then find details of this book on their web site.

Alternately, you can ask me a question ab out it, via this fórum.

Furthermore, ITV televisión here in Britain had a series of programs dedicated to LHR. The final episode aired just this past Monday night. The staff at “TAHS ” … told me yesterday that it was a NEW series. Maybe it can be found on YouTube???

Thanks Joe. I’ll check that out.

Yes, this tour was a precursor to the second series of Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport on the UK TV channel ITV. The episodes may well be on YouTube. The first series of it was also quite good. Fly-on-the-wall documentaries about airlines and airports are still very popular here. The original Airline series about easyJet in the very late 1990’s is often re-run on non-mainstream channels. I also recommend watching the BBC’s comedy Come Fly With Me. It’s silly, but pokes fun at various parts of the aviation industry. If you’ve worked in the industry, travel a lot or are an Avgeek you can’t help but recognise some of the traits!

Alastair, the new Heathrow book has 169 pages; with mainly colour photos. It’s a pictorial celebrating and commemorating Heathrow’s 70th anniversary. Its quality is EXCELLENT!

Upon your request, I can provide you with details regarding the Publisher. However, I think you’ll find them on TAHS’ web site.

Btw, I bought TAHS’ third – of their three stocked – copies. So, you may do better ordering from the publishing company.

' src=

I just came across this site, and I think its very interesting. While do not travel much, I’ve always had an interest in this kind of thing.

' src=

Great write-up. Did you get any images from inside the airside operations building, by chance?

' src=

An exciting journey, but I mean the aviation security will not like this.

' src=

Loved this article! Brought back many happy memories! Loved all the pictures, but my favorite was of my absolute favorite airline, Aer Lingus! Cute caption, “Which line do we follow?” Thank you, as always.

Maureen I would love to fly into Heathrow someday. A planespotters paradise !!! Take care

Windsor - what is there to do?

Market Cross tea house Windsor

Although the main draw is Windsor Castle itself, there is more than enough to see and experience in Windsor and Eton to last for 2 or 3 days.

Windsor Castle

Of course the main attraction for first time visitors is Windsor Castle and is the 'must see.' Most people will take around two hours to explore Windsor Castle, the largest inhabited castle in the world and in pristine condition.

Detailed Windsor Castle what to expect page

Eton College

Eton College - has educated 18 former British Prime Ministers including the Duke of Wellington, Walpole, Pitt the Elder, MacMillan and Douglas-Holme. The School Dress still consists of a black tailcoat and waistcoat, and pinstriped trousers which dates from the 1850s.

Small group tours (March-October only) of the College are a fascinating experience, which includes the Cloisters, the Chapel, the oldest classroom in the College and the Museum of Eton Life. Eton High Street is full of galleries and restaurants.

Windsor river front

Windsor river front is a good place to relax, Alexandra Gardens, a traditional Victorian park borders much of the River Thames at Windsor. The Thames path can be followed all the way back to London or even Oxford. Feeding the swans, boat trips, rowing boats are just some of the evergreen activities you will find here.

Windsor Old Town

Windsor Old Town is right next to the main Windsor Castle entrance. It can seem bordering on tourist tat at times but the buildings and history are authentic and even the most cynical visitor will be tempted into a photograph or two.

Legoland Windsor

Legoland Windsor has over 50 interactive rides, live shows, building workshops, driving schools and attractions and is set in 150 acres of beautiful parkland, LEGOLAND Windsor is a different sort of family theme park. Shuttle buses run out to the park very frequently from Windsor.

Restaurants, theatre, horse racing, walks and gardens in Windsor

There is just about every every cuisine available in Windsor itself. From expensive, intimate restaurants overlooking the River Thames to McDonald’s and Pizza Hut. wine bars and pubs. You would need a month or more to sample all there is in Windsor.

Windsor has its own theatre with some afternoon matinee performances as well as evenings, a horse race circuit by the river with mostly summer evening meetings, long walks in Windsor Great Park, and much more besides.

Transparent pricing of Windsor stopovers

Below is a 'toolkit' of prices where you can work out how much a personalised Windsor stopover will cost. Below that are some examples.

All prices include all taxes, but do not include admissions to attractions. The standard stopover is for a driver who will drop you off in front of Windsor Castle, in the middle of Windsor itself. If you require guiding whilst in Windsor can can quote for a fully guided tour too.

Pricing Toolkit For Stopover Visit To Windsor / Legoland/Stonehenge (Price per vehicle)

Prices above are for vehicle, driver and include taxes. They do not include any admission charges at attractions.

For guiding please ask for a quote.

Stonehenge prices include 2 hours at Stonehenge. At Windsor you have unlimited time for the same fee.

Example Prices (Per Vehicle Using A Mercedes E Class Car)

Full size touring coaches for large groups.

If you have a large group then that is not a problem either

The largest coaches are 50 seat coaches but we also have access to vehicles half that size.

With large groups if your average passenger is bringing more than one large case and a small item of hand luggage it might be the luggage capacity of the vehicle rather than the number of passengers that drives the correct size of vehicle required. The point being that estimating the amount of luggage you will be bringing is just as important as knowing how many people in your group.

Stonehenge and beyond options too

Stonehenge is about 75 minutes drive from Heathrow, if you have the time and inclination you can combine both or just visit Stonehenge or perhaps Oxford and other attractive options.

The best ways to get from Heathrow Airport into London

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

After a long flight to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR), you’ll probably want the easiest possible plan to get to the hotel and relax before taking in the United Kingdom capital’s world-renowned landmarks.

Heathrow is in Greater London. It’s roughly 16 miles from Central London, where you’ll find the London Eye, the South Bank of the River Thames, the shopping haven of Covent Garden and the famously frenetic Oxford Street, as well as plenty of luxury and points-friendly hotels.

Related: Watch us race to London Heathrow by cab, Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth Line

There are many ways to reach Central London and elsewhere in the city from Heathrow, including taxis, the Tube, a dedicated train service called Heathrow Express and the new, unmistakably purple Elizabeth Line. The best option to get from Heathrow into London depends on what you’re looking for — a low price, ease, speediness, or ample space for luggage.

Here are the best options for traveling from Heathrow to London, so you can start your trip off on the right foot.

London Underground (aka the Tube)

Heathrow is conveniently located on the Piccadilly Line, one of several Tube lines that make up the London Underground. The popular service — run by Transport for London — connects the airport to plenty of Central London locations. So, you may not have to transfer once you’ve made it to the city center.

Taking the Tube from the airport is likely the cheapest option. However, it may not be the most comfortable if you’re weighed down by myriad heavy suitcases, or you’re traveling during peak commuter hours.

Depart from: Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3, 4 and 5 Underground stations.

Possible destinations: The Piccadilly Line directly serves, among other stops, Hammersmith, Gloucester Road, South Kensington, Hyde Park Corner, Green Park, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Holborn and King’s Cross St. Pancras.

When does it run? Typically you can expect Tubes from all terminals from around 5 p.m. until 11:30 p.m.; nighttime services from Terminals 2 and 3 stations and the Terminal 5 station run on Fridays and Saturdays. Check the timetable here .

Transit time: It depends on where you’re headed, but from Terminal 5, it takes approximately 50 minutes to reach Piccadilly Circus or an hour to reach King’s Cross St. Pancras.

Estimated cost: Single journeys to destinations in Zone 1 (such as Piccadilly and King’s Cross) cost 5.60 British pounds ($7) if you pay contactless or with an Oyster card. Buying a ticket to Central London at a machine will cost around 6.70 British pounds ($8.29) per person. Children under 11 travel free with a fare-paying adult.

If you’re going outside of Zone 1 (such as to Hammersmith, in Zone 2), then you’re looking at a smaller fare of 2.10 British pounds ($2.60) to 3.40 British pounds ($4.21) depending on travel time.

Paying for your trip: To pay for your tube journey or get a ticket, you have several options. The most convenient method is to pay using your contactless card by touching it on the yellow card readers found at Tube entrances or before the platforms.

You can also tap in on the yellow card readers using a prepaid Oyster card. You can buy them at all Tube, Overground and most Elizabeth Line stations for 7 British pounds ($8.69). They’re also available at most newsstands and visitor centers throughout London. Once you’ve purchased your Oyster, you can use the ticket machines inside Underground stations to add money to the card for individual journeys or a daily or weekly travel card covering various Zones.

Note the card readers aren’t always connected to gates and are sometimes free-standing. Keep an eye out for them. If you don’t tap in and out at the start and end of your journey, you’ll get charged for traveling through Zones 1 to 9.

Alternatively, you can buy paper tickets from the ticket machines at each Tube, Overground or DLR station. These tickets allow for one-way and return journeys or daily and weekly travel cards. To use the tickets, insert them in the signposted areas on the gates as you head to the line you’re traveling on.

Some stations will also have a staffed kiosk that you can use instead of ticket machines; you can ask for advice here on the best tickets to buy or routes to take.

Elizabeth Line

Opened in 2022, the Elizabeth Line (also run by TfL) is a swift option for traveling into Central London from LHR. It strikes a nice balance of price and efficiency. While not as cheap as the Tube, the trains are newer, roomier and air-conditioned, and they have Wi-Fi. Like the Heathrow Express, these trains stop in Paddington, but there are other destination options, too. It takes a bit longer than the Heathrow Express, but it’s also more affordable.

Depart from: Terminals 2 and 3, 4 and 5 railway stations.

Possible destinations: The Elizabeth Line travels direct from Heathrow to Abbey Wood — serving Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, and Canary Wharf. See the full map on TfL’s website here. There are no longer direct services between Canary Wharf and Terminal 5 except for some early morning and late evening services. Trains arriving at Heathrow from Canary terminate at Terminal 4.

When does it run? Times vary by terminal and whether you’re transiting on a weekday or weekend. Typically, the first trains leave between 5:15 a.m. and 6:05 a.m., while the last trains leave the airport between 11:46 p.m. and 12.13 a.m. Find specific timings here.

Transit time: It depends on where you’re headed. It takes about 35 minutes from Terminal 5 station to Paddington or about 45 minutes from Terminal 2 and 3 stations to Liverpool Street.

Estimated cost :  Heathrow’s website claims any journey to or from the airport that starts or ends in Zone 1 costs 12.80 British pounds ($15.83) per person. Whether you use contactless payment or Oyster, TfL’s single fare finder shows a single journey from Terminal 5 to Paddington on the Elizabeth Line costs 12.20 British pounds ($15). A journey from Terminals 2 and 3 stations to Liverpool Street costs 13.30 British pounds ($16.45).

However, these prices apply to contactless payments or Oyster payments only. Buying a paper ticket via the ticket machines in stations will cost you a small amount more — as discovered by TPG recently when we paid 14.30 British pounds for an off-peak ticket from Liverpool Street to Heathrow via the Elizabeth Line. Generally speaking, although the savings are only minor, it’s better to pay for your travel by contactless or Oyster card.

Children under the age of 11 travel free with a fare-paying adult.

Heathrow Express

Heathrow Express will be the fastest way to get from Heathrow to Paddington Station. It’s a direct train, so there are no extra stops along the way. Also, there are luggage racks and plugs for charging phones, which is always handy. For onward journeys, Paddington is well connected to multiple Tube lines. The downside is that the Heathrow Express can be expensive compared to other rail options.

Depart from: Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 station and Terminal 5 railway station. You’ll need to take a free connecting shuttle service to the station if you land in Terminal 4.

Possible destinations: Paddington Station. For an extra cost, you can change to the Tube lines Bakerloo, Circle, District, Hammersmith & City or the Elizabeth Line.

When does it run? Typically from 5:10 a.m. until around 12 a.m., though it can vary. Trains run every 15 minutes. See the full Heathrow Express timetable here.

Transit time: 15 minutes to Paddington from Terminals 2 and 3 station or 20 minutes from Terminal 5 station.

Estimated cost: Typically, a single Heathrow Express journey from Paddington to Heathrow costs 25 pounds ($31) per person though you sometimes can pay less if you book in advance. If you’re from Great Britain and have a National Railcard, this price could drop down to 16.50 British pounds.

If you don’t have a National Railcard or are not from Great Britain, you can sometimes find discounts online by searching for Heathrow Express vouchers or coupon codes you can use when booking online.

While the Heathrow Express can be a more expensive rail option, it may be a better deal than it seems for families since children under 15 travel free with a fare-paying adult.

If you are returning to the airport within one month of your ticket, then an anytime ticket may be cheaper overall at 37 British pounds ($45.76) or 24.40 British pounds with a National Railcard.

If public transport doesn’t appeal to you, or you’re landing in the middle of the night when no public transportation is operating, you can use Uber to get to and from Heathrow and Central London. Naturally, you’ll pay more than you would for a Tube ride or train ticket.

Depart from: Terminal 2, 3, 4 or 5’s short-stay parking lot. The app will tell you where to go once you’ve requested a ride and your driver is confirmed, but typically pick-up spots will be here:

  • Terminal 2 — Level 4, Row H (Short Stay Car Park 2).
  • Terminal 3 — Level 3, Row A (Short Stay Car Park 3).
  • Terminal 4 — Level 1, Private Hire Pickup.
  • Terminal 5 — Level 1, Row R (Short Stay Car Park 5).

Possible destinations: Direct service wherever you like, which can be a benefit with luggage and tired kids.

When does it run? In theory, you can get an Uber at any time.

Transit time: Varies depending on traffic, destination and other factors. (Pay attention to rush hour and commuting times.) As a rough guide, it typically takes around 50 minutes to reach Paddington by car or one hour to reach Piccadilly Circus from Terminal 5 (on a good day). This means it isn’t necessarily the quickest option during many times of the day as the Heathrow Express makes that trip to Paddington in just 15 minutes.

Estimated cost: The cost of an Uber depends on traffic, your destination and other factors. As an example, it can cost 59 British pounds ($73) from Terminal 5 to Paddington or 63 British pounds ($78) to Piccadilly Circus – both UberX rides, excluding tips.

If you’re traveling in a group of more than four or have more than a small suitcase or two, you’ll likely need a bigger car. Expect to pay more for an Uber Lux or Comfort journey.

Taxis (including black cabs, WeKnow and Addison Lee)

Beyond Uber, numerous other options exist for getting a taxi into London from Heathrow. Options include hailing an iconic London black cab at the taxi rank, pre-booking an electric car from Heathrow’s private hire transfer service WeKnow or arranging a car from a company such as Addison Lee.

The latter two options provide a meet-and-greet service to help get you and your luggage straight into the car. Addison Lee also requires your flight number at booking, which means the company can adjust your ride in case of a delay. Again, this type of transfer will cost you more than rail services.

Depart from: The relevant taxi rank outside Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 for a black cab. For another service, the pick-up location will be specified in your booking, or your driver will meet you at the terminal.

Possible destinations: Again, wherever you’d like.

When does it run? In theory, you should be able to arrange a taxi or car transfer anytime.

Transit time: Varies depending on traffic, destination and other factors. From Terminal 5, it typically takes about 50 minutes by car to Paddington or one hour to Piccadilly Circus. Although, Addison Lee estimates it’ll take one hour and 10 minutes for a journey to Paddington around 6 p.m.

Estimated cost: This will vary, depending on the type of taxi you go for, among other considerations such as traffic. Some estimates are below.

  • Black cab: The meter will start running when your ride begins. TfL, which manages London’s black cabs, says a Heathrow to Central London journey can range from 52 pounds ($64.31) to 97 pounds ($120). Find out more about black cab fares here .
  • WeKnow: Prices are fixed, so you’ll know what you pay when you book. A trip from Terminal 5 to Paddington or Piccadilly Circus costs 70 pounds ($86.57) to 94 pounds ($116.25) depending on the car size you need. A meet-and-greet service costs 14.99 pounds ($18.54) extra. Use WeKnow’s calculator to work out your exact journey price.
  • Addison Lee: Prices are fixed, so you’ll know the price when you book. A sample Terminal 5 to Paddington journey (leaving ASAP) was quoted online as 94.32 pounds ($116.66) or up to 122 pounds ($150.89), depending on the car size needed. The meet-and-greet is included in both prices. For an exact quote, visit Addison Lee’s website and input your flight number and journey details.

Coach (including National Express and Megabus)

Coaches operated by National Express and Megabus drop you off at Victoria Coach Station. They’re usually inexpensive and often have Wi-Fi and phone charging points. They can also carry your luggage in the hold – check Megabus limits  and National Express limits .

However, buses are not the fastest way to reach Central London. How long they take depends on traffic, time of day and other factors.

Depart from: Heathrow Central Bus Station between Terminals 2 and 3 is the quickest departure point for both National Express and Megabus coaches. If you leave Terminal 4, take the free shuttle to the bus station. You can also alight a coach from Terminal 5 (look for arrivals level stops 13, 14 and 15 for Megabus).

Possible destinations: Victoria Coach Station. From there, it is a short walk to the Victoria Line at Victoria Station; the line stops at Green Park, Oxford Circus, Warren Street and King’s Cross (at an extra cost).

When does it run? National Express coaches usually run throughout the day, with a service gap between 1 a.m. and 3.45 a.m. Check the exact timetable for your route here. You can find out more about Megabus times on its website.

Transit time: From Terminals 2 and 3, National Express coaches take anywhere from 55 minutes to one hour and 20 minutes to reach Victoria Coach Station, depending on the time of day you travel. Megabus lists transit times of 45 and 55 minutes for the same journey.

From Terminal 5, National Express coaches can take anywhere from one hour and 20 minutes to one hour and 35 minutes.

Estimated cost: For National Express coaches, a single journey starts from 6 pounds ($7.42) per person. For Megabus coaches , a single journey starts from 8 British pounds ($9.89).

Other travel options

You can take local bus 285 from Heathrow Central Bus Station (serving Terminals 2 and 3) to Feltham train station. It’s 16 stops away. From there, you can hop on a 30-or-45-minute train to Waterloo via Clapham Junction.

London bus “hopper fares” cost 1.75 British pounds ($2.16), and train tickets start from 8.60 pounds ($10.64) per person. This option is on the cheaper side. However, it’s very long-winded, especially since you can reach Waterloo Station from Paddington via the Bakerloo Line and the Piccadilly Line (with a change to Jubilee Line at Green Park).

For those traveling somewhere in Greater London, rather than Central London, there are several local bus routes from the airport. View them here.

Bottom line

The best way to get from Heathrow Airport to London depends on your budget, your amount of luggage, and how much time and hassle you are willing to invest in the journey.

If you want to avoid street traffic and save money, the Elizabeth Line and Tube are our top picks. If speed is your primary concern, it’s hard to ignore the Heathrow Express. Need to get away from dragging luggage around or just want the absolutely simplest path from Point A to B? Consider an Uber or taxi.
