Skandagiri Trek: On the Other Side of Fear

Skandagiri Trek

Have you ever been afraid of being alone in an unfamiliar place you’d never been before? the response could be Yes or No.

What was it like to be alone in a lonely location, afraid and helpless? I’d never had anything like it till I went on the Skandagiri Trek by myself.

Skandagiri is a mountain 70 kilometers from Bangalore with a fortification at its summit. The peak is roughly 1350 meters above sea level.

Before You Begin Your Journey:

While reading several of the internet posts about this location, I noticed that night treks were prohibited, residents were unpleasant, and police would detain hikers, among other things. Even before we started the walk, it had become a terrifying prospect. The terror that these thoughts instilled in me made me reconsider going there for a hike.

But, for some reason, I convinced myself that all of my fears were unfounded, and I chose to go ahead and do it anyway.

The Adventure Begins:

I found a train from Bangalore to ChikBallapur because I’m usually on the lookout for a cheap excursion. It will just cost you 20/- to travel from Bangalore to Chik

●     Skandagiri is reached by train.

The train was scheduled to leave Bangalore city Junction at 08:30 a.m., but it arrived late. And the train, which was expected to arrive at ChikBallapur at 11 a.m., arrived at midnight.

I walked into town from the railway station and had my Bruch at a nearby nice restaurant

●     To get to the base from Chickballapur Town:

In broken Kannada, I asked a handful of people how to travel to Skandagiri, but I didn’t get any satisfactory answers. So, as is customary, I chose to rely solely on Google Maps.

According to maps, the base is 5 kilometers from the town, which takes an hour to walk. So, around 1:00 p.m., I began trekking towards Skandagiri’s base, following the charts. And I took a stroll down the village road, taking in the scenery without the glare of the sun.

●     Skandagiri is reached via the village.

I arrived at the bottom of the slope around 14:00 hours. I discovered the temple mentioned in previous blog articles, confirming that I had not taken any false turns.

According to Google maps, the peak was 3 kilometers from the base, which meant another hour of hiking.

From the base, the first view of Skandagiri

When I first started trekking, I was a little confused about where the trails were because Google maps didn’t indicate my specific location on the map. But, with no other option, I simply followed the path until I came across a few arrow marks on the rocks signifying the beginning of the trekking track.

On the rocks, there were similar markings.

There was no one else in the area. It was two o’clock in the afternoon. The sun shone brightly and to its full extent. There was only a sliver of a breeze to provide some relief. But, sooner or later, some clouds arrived to assist, and things began to improve.

view of Skandagiri

The hiking trail was indicated. As a result, it wasn’t difficult to follow. When I first started hiking, I even turned off Google Maps.

●     Skandagiri’s Trails

After a long trek, I was able to glimpse a portion of the stronghold.

●     The first sighting of the SkandaGiri fort wall.

It was a fraction of an hour. So I thought I was moving quickly. However, as I approached that area of the stronghold, I noticed another similar fortress a little higher up. In actuality, they were a series of fort walls, stacked one on top of the other at various levels.

●     There are no shortcuts in life, and there are none in trekking! :

I considered taking shortcuts when I spotted the fort walls. I decided to walk towards the fort walls because the straight line between them was the shortest distance between them

●     The Pursuit of Happiness Is…:

Finding plastic waste thrown aside by someone can be a source of joy (even though it is a sad scene)

Conclusion:

To Conclude, The trekking route provides some spectacular views, so taking breaks to enjoy the scenery is always recommended. Don’t miss the vantage points from which you can get awe-inspiring views of the lush green landscape.

Description

Skandagiri, also historically known as Kalwarbetta or Kalavara Durga is a mountain fortress located around 70 km from Bangalore. This tiring yet much rewarding trek takes you through a spectacular journey amidst the wilderness. Starting by 11 pm from Bangalore, reach the base point by midnight and hereby begins the night trek. The serene and sublime atmosphere around Skandagiri will definitely boost up your adrenaline. This 8km trek can easily be completed within 4 to 5 hours of ascending and descending.

Tried and tested both by amateurs and professionals, this trek is a must for thrill seekers. The climb gets tedious as you reach the Papagni Temple, hereby offering treacherous terrains amongst the dense shrubs around. Thereafter the steep slopes may require tricky footwork till the summit. The ruined remains of Tipu Sultans fort and an abandoned fort remains at the top of the hill.

Skandagiri is famous for walking above the clouds, literally! As you reach the top, enjoy the bonfire in the starry night . Wake up to experience the morning winds caressing you, as you open your eyes to get the most magnanimous sight of the sun rising above a bed of clouds, a sight so rare. The misty valley of Skandagiri is bound to leave an everlasting impression in your mind.

The guide was very coordinating throughout the trek and was always available for any kind of help. At last but not the least complementary breakfast which was very nice and timely drop added more feathers to the hat of a wonderful trek. Thanks for the travel partner for such a smooth experience.

Harshil P Raval

We were going on a track for first time, and were unable to cope with the pace of guides. They should divide themselves among to beginner and experienced groups. We had to return from from the trek after 80% of distance. Also the time alloted to much more for overall trekking. The whole trek could have completed in less time and we could have returned to Bangalore early.

Nice, Awesome experience

skandagiri trek review

The trek wasn't guided, everyone trekked by their own. No proper washroom facilities were made available and also no briefing was given regarding the itenary for example time of descent/ come back to base by 9 Am or so due to 2 people the rest 27 odd people had to wait for 1.5 hours.

Not worth the money spent for this trek - We do not get any basic facilities arranged. Guide is no where to be found after the start of trek. No toilets available atleast for women.

skandagiri trek review

Overall the trek was good. It was organised well, but one thing I would like to highlight that there was a kind of waste of time during the beginning. The pick up can start late.

skandagiri trek review

Organised a very nice trek to skandagiri. The guides were supportive and helpful during the trek. Would recommend the group to everyone.

It's a nice trip to skandagiri hills and the guide is very helpful and kind....and I am suggesting this to explore the trekks with this community...😊😊

skandagiri trek review

This is my second trek with escape2explore, the first being Kunthi Betta. Skandagiri trek was a lifetime experience. Arranged well. Well coordinated guides. Especially Mr. Ayan, who had a great patience in helping & to take care till the last trekker. One of my memorable trek. Kudos to escape2explore 😁👍👏👏

Nayan Nakhate

@escape2explore Thanks for this amazing experience. This was one tiring trek but it is totally worth it after reaching the peak. I totally enjoyed the beautiful view at the top of the hill , the sunrise and was literally in the laps of those beautiful clouds. Just enjoyed every bit of it. I highly recommend the trekkers to wear trekking shoes with a good grip. It was overall an awesome experience. To all the trekkers out thr..Go for it 🙂

It was good experience traveling with Escape2Explore. Very supportive Guides and friendly. ✌

skandagiri trek review

It was an awesome experience but wasn't easy as expected. It'd be a challenge for the first timers for sure but the key is one has to keep going. We missed the sunrise due to clouds but the journey was beautiful. Breakfast was good while coming back to Bangalore. Get a good torch for the trek and a normal winter jacket which will be required on the peak. Would surely recommend for the trek lovers!

skandagiri trek review

A very well-organized and extremely well-planned trip was organized. I went alone and made friends during the trip, as we had a fun session of introducing ourselves while on our way to Skandagiri Hills. mubarak and rock were our trek leaders, and they were as friendly and accommodating as one gets. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the much-hyped sunrise, as the weather was very cloudy. But our trek leaders made sure we wait and have fun at the hilltop as long as there's still a chance to watch the sunrise. Going back down the hill was another good experience, as we stopped at certain points and took pictures with the beautiful background. It was my first trek, and it went really well

skandagiri trek review

It can be a really good experience for the people who are interested in night trekking. But must say it's not an easy one for the people who are not in practice of any kind of physical activities or exercise. It's at least 4 km climb which people need to complete in 1.5 hours. Please keep enough water and snacks with you, people usually feel hungry while climbing down. The vendor who conducted the activity was punctual while picking up people from pickup points. They guided well while climbing up in dark. Also, they provided a good breakfast at a nice place - Ground Zero. People who are interested in night trek, need not think twice before booking this trip.

skandagiri trek review

It was a well planned trekking ,except for the fact that they picked us up a little late . Very friendly .Swamy(Organiser head) was very friendly and co-operated with us all through the tour. It was a well week-end relaxation for all the trekkers .

skandagiri trek review

. It was a very good experience for me walking in the middle of the night in wilderness, wow i always wanted to do that. Need to appreciate the guide's patience as our group was struggling and the last one to reach the top but he was there to guide us back and fro. Looking forward to have more such experiences with "escape2explore". For me its complete paisa vasool:-)

skandagiri trek review

Skandagiri night trek was an amazing experience... 6 out of 7 participants were 1st timer (from perspective of trekking)... na manojs been the 1st point of contact at escape2explore... he is an amazing partner and ensures that his customers are well informed and he goes out of his way to help... He even surprised us by joining us for the trek just to ensure that we had a glitch free time... Swamy - our guide was a fantastic resource... he knew his area and subject... great point to share is that all of us came back in-hurt considering it was the 1st time

Awesome experience. Travel:- If you are opting for a bike it will cost you around 500rs. But you need to travel for 140km up n down. Else opt for the Traveller 1350rs. Level of trekking:- Depends on person to person. For me it was moderate. But if you are a newbie in trekking I will say it's difficult. You will get tired for sure. It is worth going place. Far far better than Nandi hills. This is overlooked. Required things:- Carry a torch or mobile torch is more than enough. Carry something to eat. Raincoat, water bottle. Zenith:- This is a beautiful experience you will have once you reach. Can't explain in words. You need to go there to experience it :)

It was exciting to go on trekking and it was a really beautiful place. It was a nice experience although you tend to get really tired if you have no experience whatsoever, so I would recommend to do a bit of physical activity before. The trekking guides were super supportive and enthusiastic. Once u reach the hilltop, you feel a real established sense of calm. Try to make the most of it as you don't get enough time. Although it was tiring, it was worth it once you reach the top.

skandagiri trek review

The thrill of excitement on your first trek is amazing. This trip was the first ever trek for all of us. The trek is of medium difficulty at some points and also it is a night trek so torches are a must, without torches it is very difficult to trek. There are steep slopes at some places but people call out those spots and help each other to get over it. For me the trip was amazing very nice view of sunrise and decent in daylight was delightful. First timers should go on this trek as it's not that hard and it is hard for a day so u won't feel too tired after the trek. They provide delicious breakfast after coming down in a local restaurant too. :)

Hello everyone, I am more than happy to share my experience of my first night trek. This trek gave me a lot of new friends, walk in nature in the night with so many people around me having a good experience together. This being my first trek I am happy to tell these experiences & moments were possible because of all the coordinators who helped us.I am going to get more of my friends in the future events.

skandagiri trek review

like to go on more such trips. One of them even took some good snaps of/for us :). The bonfire was very much necessary at the peak and we had fun keeping the fire on nullifying the effect of strong winds :P. Overall the trek was fun and memorable except for some constant unnecessary noise created by a bunch of people who were part of the trekking group

skandagiri trek review

This can be a great trek for people who are just starting off. Swamy and Team followed all the standard operating procedures of a trek.Gave directions, One lead , one was with the group and the other towards the end. Overall, they did a decent job managing the group though it almost became a 'crowd'. They were also very tolerant to some noisy people and handled the whole thing with ease. Swamy's Team was very energetic and chatty which made the trek back down all the more interesting. We stopped at a decent hotel for breakfast on our way back. Food was great for the starved stomach! The cost of 1150 includes the breakfast. However, I feel Swamy & Team can work towards a better pricing. Not to forget, The only downside would be that Swamy & team weren't punctual. Me and my friends were waiting for over 1.5 hours at Hebbal from the stipulated time! If they improve on the punctuality quotient , they can be great! Overall a nice experience!

skandagiri trek review

We were 3 girls and it was our first night trek to skandagiri hills. It was a great experience. Shahid and Rock led the whole trek well..they took care of each and every person in the team and also helped the people who were not able to climb up the hills by carrying their bags I guess nobody in the other trip organizers will help this much. Thanks a lot for making us feel comfortable and we enjoyed this night trek.

I went on Skandagiri sunrise trek and had very good trekking experience. Pickup was on time and guides were friendly.Breakfast after the trek was much needed and it was good.Went on Antargange night trek and cave exploration and had a very good experience. The crew was very supportive during the trek.

. Skandgiri the place itself indicates the hill and that too 1350 altitude range and trek of 5km one side. It was one of the best treks in my life. Our guide rock is too good and simply awesome guy. He has been with us throughout the trek and guided nicely. I enjoyed the trip superbly.Highlights of trip:11.20 we have started from BTam layout to Skandgiri. Mrng 2 we have reached and waited till the gates of the forest has been opened. Forest gates opened at 4 in the morning and we started our trek. Reached around 5.30am to the top of the hill and waited for sun rise view(Bad Luck it was cloudy till 8 Am), we couldn't make the sunrise view. Later we reached to the bottom/trek start point by 9.Had very nice breakfast and return to BTM my home stop by 12.30.

I went to skandagiri trek with these guys and it was really a great experience. All I thought was missing was the participant bonding that usually is coordinated by the guides of the organizers.

skandagiri trek review

Skandagiri trek was good experience. But trek could have been better managed if guides stayed with us during the trek. Many times we lost way and were not clear on which way to go. Also we had to wait one hour before starting the trek after reaching the destination.

skandagiri trek review

We (7 friends) booked the trek to Skandagiri hills with this site. The trip was exciting along with 33 members and 2 guides. They had made a good communication before the trek about the necessary steps and items. On the entire trek we were guided by them. One at the beginning of the group and one at end. We had a great time at the entire trek. The transportation facility provided by them was really well managed with multiple pickup points on the designated route. Even they have done multiple drops. It was mostly convenient for people who live in Banshankari to Hebbal route. Breakfast was also served post trek completion at a nearby hotel. They had served 1 idli, 1vada 1/2 masala dosa, 1tea/coffee with chutney and sambar. The food was good and the hotel was neat and clean. It was my first trek and we really enjoyed a lot.

We went for sunrise trek to Skandagiri - treked on Jan 18-19 2019. It was an amazing experience. Very well organised & guides were very helpful & supportive (Ayan & saqib). Breakfast was good & sufficient in very good restaurant.Kudos to organizers & team. Worth the money spent

This is undoubtedly one of the best sunrises I have seen ever. When you stand at the top of the mountain and see the sun rise in front of your eyes, I don’t think anything else can parallel that. Forest charges are included in the package cost so you don’t have to pay for it additionally while on the trek, it is taken care of by Escape2Explore. Skandagiri for me was an unknown place before I found it on the Escape2Explore website. So, there must also be many such places which are waiting to be explored. I will definitely try and check out more such spots around Bangalore and visit them along with my friends. The price of the whole outing is just Rs. 1150, it is truly the best deal one can get for this destination. Once if you visit the place, I am sure you will be delighted to visit more of them.

Shreya Soni

This is one of the best treks I have ever been to, it is something totally different and mind-blowing. I must admit that this one is specially for the ones who have been to treks several times and not first-timers or amateurs, so to say. The journey is long, tiring and consumes you totally. But the moment you witness the sunrise from up above, it will be worth every ounce of effort you have put into this lovely trek. This is surely the best sunrise I have ever seen in my life. You can literally witness a bed of clouds and the sun rises above those clouds. It seems totally surreal in the morning and this is the hour for which you take so much efforts to climb this peak. No matter how difficult it seems, complete this trek because at the end, there will be something you have never witnessed before. Also, I would like to thank the team from Escape2Explore who guided us throughout the journey and looked after us in all conditions.

Mesmerizing view above the Clouds

Here’s how the Skandagiri Trek Itinerary goes:

As the place is near to Bangalore based in Kalwara village,  in the nearby town of Chikballapur (around 60 kilometres from the city), it doesn’t take us more than 2 hours to reach there on a good weekend even from the farthest pickup point.

  • 2 am : Pickups Locations from Skandagiri can be Hebbal, BTM or Silkboard Junction and Marathahalli.
  • 4 am : Reach the starting point of the trek, near papagani mutt in Kalawara village. The enjoyable early morning trek commences which feels more like a night trek as the day break is yet to occur.
  • 6 am : The trek group reaches the hilltop and the view unfolds according to the day’s prediction of sunrise which is around 6ish early morning in winters when the view from Skandagiri’s hill peak is the best to experience.
  • There’s ample time to explore the temple, fort ruins and enjoy the beautiful view in peace.
  • 8 am : We start our descend downhill which is yet another experience as visibility is much better due to sunrise and we get to view an incredible surrounding view of the valley form this dilapidated hill fort’s trek trail.
  • 10 am : We reach the starting point of the trek and have marked a great end to a worth the while morning experience.
  • From here, we hop on to our vehicles and leave for the city. It is recommended to have some scrumptious breakfast in any of the famous highway dhabas on you’re way back.

Good Place for Night Trek

I planned to do this night trek since a long time but never found interested people. As it is usually a night trek so was skeptical of going alone. Finally I came to know about BMC and convinced my partner to join the organized trek with me. I must say I had a very good experience. The trek itself is quite steep and will tire you out if you are not fit enough. My partner literally had leg cramps the entire next day. Some places I remember we literally crawled up. Try to pack your backpack as lightly as possible and carry sufficient water and energy bars. For first timers the trek might appear pretty challenging but it is doable with proper rest. Its best to go in a group of people so that people can help each other in times of need....though you dont need any technical help at any point. The top part is super windy and take utmost caution in roaming around that part. The spectacular sunrise view which is advertised for Skandagiri is rarely visible due to the clouds and we too could not see the sunrise. But the overall experience of the night trek was fun. I would recommend if you want to attempt Skandagiri do it as a night trek only. (However the lack of sleep that night can make you really tired) Overall I would recommend people to try it only if they enjoy trekking. People should not expect a leisure trip there like Nandi Hills.

We trekked to skandagiri from mahasamsthana math side (three hills away) in hot summer. This will be a supurb trek after rainy season. Please note that it is not a well marked route and without mobile connectivity, so keep a track of your bearing. I will call it a mild trek, but a very long one. Nature is amazing and one need to figure out route based on general direction. Keep a compass or GPS, or you are sure to get lost. Also, there is nothing to eat or drink so carry enough food/water. The only place you can eat is on the way back at temple

Night trek at Skandagiri, reaching the peak to view the Sunrise, is an amazing experience. Starting at around 3:30am from the foothill, looking for where to put your next step in the torchlight, and climbing sometimes easy to sometimes very difficult rocks, completes the magic. While it’s mentioned as moderate difficulty, many a times it seemed quite difficult for non-regular trekker. Do practice caution if it’s drizzling or raining, as loose sand & rocks get slippery. It’s worth all the trouble, when you reach the peak while it’s still dark, and then watch the sky changing the colors before it culminates Sun rising in the horizon. With the exhaustion of trek and the chill in wind, nothing you’d enjoy more than a cup of tea in hand with gaze fixed eastwards (carry the flask yourself :-)). Summary, must visit for trekking enthusiasts.

Located 60 km from Bangalore its a trekking spot and for night trekking as well.On the way up we have caves as well.Carry water and torch

Awesome experience of skandagiri trekking with torch light and on the hill top it was full of heavy wind and mist, when we visited in month of july

A wonderful place for trekking with moderate difficulty level. The view from the top and the relaxing time on peak of Skandagiri under sky roof is worth the trek.

Everything You Need To Know About Skandagiri Trek

A highly regarded an early morning trek , Skandagiri trek is an epic journey through strenuous terrains that is as rewarding as it is tiring. Nothing compares to the sunrise that you witness among clouds at the summit. It is an ideal one day trip very close to Bangalore.

Best Time For Skandagiri Trek

View of the clouds atop the hill

Anytime is a good time for this trek. Winter, that is from November to January, is usually considered the best time to go on this trek. On a winter’s night, nothing quite beats the stargazing after a difficult climb and in monsoons, the flora and fauna provide a fresh appeal to the trek. Summer trek to Skandagiri is doable if you have the stamina to withstand the treacherous summer heat of South India.

How To Get There

Skandagiri Forest Reception Counter

You need to reach the village of Chikkaballapur first.

  • Road: You can take a bus from Bangalore to Chikkaballapur. From there you could take a 15-minute auto-rickshaw ride to the base point in Kalawara village or walk on foot. Or hire a cab from Bangalore to drop you to Chikkaballapura. You could take your own car/bike and arrange for parking in Chikkaballapur village only if you know someone you trust or if you’re taking a driver along who will remain in the car as you trek. It’s best not to take your own vehicle to avoid fraudulent parking assistant.
  • Rail: Bangalore to the nearest railhead and multiple trains run to Bangalore. From Mumbai, you can try the Udyan Express or from Delhi, you can book Bangalore Rajdhani.
  • Flight: Fly to Bangalore airport which is connected to major cities in India and then take a cab to Chikkaballapura.

Trekking Route

Sunrise at Skandagiri

When to begin

You should begin your trek at around 4 in the morning since it is a relatively shorter trek. The trail is well-marked throughout the trek so finding your way to the top would be easy.

The trek starts from Papagni Temple near the village of Kalwara. The first few minutes is a semi-dry trail but soon after lush greenery begins. You can see the Kalwarbettar fortress right ahead of you during your trek. After walking through some dense foliage, you will reach the fortress, but the fun has just started. There are six such ruined fortresses which lead to the ancient temple at the top. The view throughout is glorious and along the trail, there are small samadhi caves where you can rest for a bit.

The route is safe and no snake attacks have been reported. After a 4 to 5-hour hike with intermittent fort ruins marking your way, you will reach the summit and witness the majestic sunset.

Descent & Return

Sea of clouds

The trek is especially undertaken for its appeal at night and most people camp overnight to enjoy the breathtaking sunrise, however, there are a few who begin their trek early in the morning and return by sundown. We recommend night camping under the stars and nature as it makes for a more rewarding experience. To return, you can follow the same trail back, visit Nandi Hills nearby if you like or proceed to Bangalore.

Abandoned Temple looks haunting at sundown

  • Travel: Bangalore to Chikkaballapur bus fare (one-way) is Rs 600 if you choose a private operator. KSRTC bus fare is around Rs. 350. From there to the base point in an auto will cost around Rs. 50. Self-drive cab (return trip) will cost around Rs. 5600.
  • Food: Food will cost around Rs. 300 to Rs 600 for a day.
  • Accommodation: You can camp overnight in your own tent at the summit campsites.
  • Other: Recently, the government has started charging Rs. 450 for the Skandagiri trek. This decision was made after certain irresponsible trekkers would litter the place and treat the area with disrespect and neglect.
  • Skandagiri Trek Package: Trek operators will charge around Rs. 1000 and above for the trek. But the trail is really simple, you don’t need a guide.

Places To Stay

Camping overnight

If you’re booked with a trekking operator, staying arrangements will be made for you overnight. Otherwise, you can take your own tent and camp there. If you’re choosing not to do the night trek, you can stay in budget hotels (tariff starts at Rs. 1500) in Nandi Hills, which is close by. Try Mount Palazzo or Discovery Village.

There are several shacks and tea stalls on the trek trail that sell snacks, cookies, tea and cold drinks/ water. You can also have lunch at quite a few restaurants in Chikkaballapura such as Kamat Upachar Restaurant, Chandru Hotel, Hotel Babuji and Swathi Restaurant.

Skandagiri Hills

By Meenakshi Gupta Also known as Kalavara Durga, Skandagiri hills famous for their gorgeous sunrise and sunset views hold historical significance as the ruins of the 18th century Tipu Sultan fort can be seen at the top. Trek up the hills for a mesmerising sunrise over the floating clouds or trek during the day and witness the breathtaking sunset. A moderate to challenging level trek is quite popular amongst aspiring trekkers and seasoned as well. The night trek to view the sunrise is something that one is looking for that adrenaline rush. Crossing the treacherous trails, steep inclines, and rocky boulders will give you an experience of a lifetime.

Skandagiri Hills

Skandagiri is one of the most sought treks around Bangalore for its spectacular misty views and the clouds over the hills. The night trek is a dream come true for trekkers, and nature lovers and is a paradise for photographers. Climb up the hills through the wilderness and lush green dense forest to reach the top of the hills. Skandagiri stands tall at a height of approximately 1350 mts overlooking Nandi hills and Muddenahalli. Trekker’s paradise and a delight for nature lovers, Skandagiri takes about 6-8 hours to complete the 8 km trek distance. The ruins of the fort and a Shiva Temple on the top of the hills will leave you awestruck. Just 70 km away from Bangalore, Skandagiri is famous for its sunrise views and hence the night trek. The picture-perfect sunrise views after the strenuous trek are worth the effort.

Kalavara Durga

Built by Tipu Sultan, the fortress has been abandoned since 1791 after he lost the Anglo-Mysore war. However, the beauty and charm of the place have increased over time even more. This is what makes the trek, the most popular sunrise trek near Bangalore. One needs to take permission from the forest department and the trek can be booked online at Karnataka Eco-tourism.

Best Time to Visit

There is also an ancient temple which is located at the top of the hills that you will only get to see once you complete the trek. The view from atop the hills is breathtaking that will leave you with your mouth open. DIY Hiking Guide To Skandagiri Hill

Ever wanted to start trekking but had trouble finding a solid amateur trek destination? Well, you’re now in luck, as Skandagiri is one of the more beginner-friendly must-do treks in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It is a popular trekking destination among the Bengalurians. The uphill journey on the challenging terrain of boulders and rocks ensconced within the surrounding scenic landscape at the hilltop makes it worth a hike.

Situated approximately 70 Km from Bangalore city, Skandagiri (also known as Kalavara Durga) is one of the Navadurgas around Bengaluru .

The trek also offers you a great opportunity to visit the Papagni Mutt, an ancient temple situated near the parking lot at the base of the hike. A 5-minute walk from here will take you to the checking gate, which also serves as the starting point of the hike.

Table of contents, skandagiri forest guard official contact, network availability, atm availability, languages spoken, parking availability, restroom facilities, best time to visit, things to do in skandagiri, hiking details, important things to remember, essential things to carry, frequently asked questions, related posts.

Check post at the trek starting point

Forest Guard, Srikala – 9686347164

Receptionist, Gurunatha – 8722571516

Keep in mind that it is mandatory that you are subject to a comprehensive check by the forest officials. The forest guards will check your bags and your online registration. Following this, they will appoint a reliable guide to accompany you on your trek.

Airtel. Jio and BSNL offer decent network and cellular coverage throughout the hike.

There are no ATMs available in close proximity to the entire trek trail. You can find the nearest ATMs in Chikkaballapur town, approximately 3 Km away.

Kannada is the only language spoken by forest officials and people in the region.

There are safe and sufficient parking spaces available near the ancient Papagni Mutt temple. You can also fill your water bottles here from the nearby water tank.

Parking fee – Rs.30 for a two-wheeler & Rs.50 for a four-wheeler.

You can find clean and well-maintained restrooms near the hike-starting gate.

Best time to visit Skandagiri hills

Skandagiri can be visited all year round. So the timing of your travel is dependent on what you wish to enjoy.

If you visit in the winter, the view will be enclosed in a blanket of mist, making the entire scenic landscape invisible. However, this does make for a very romantic journey as you walk between the clouds.

During the monsoon and the rainy season, the rocks and boulders are very slippery, making for a less-than-desirable trek.

During the summer, you get the best sunrise view(s), but you have to ensure that you return well in time to ward off the scorching heat.

How To Reach Skandagiri From Bengaluru?

The Chikkaballapur railway station (Station code: MKL, 2 Km) is the only nearby railway station. There are trains (not so frequent) from Majestic railway station, Bengaluru. The train journey is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

If you have your own vehicle, search for Papagni Math or Skandagiri parking on Google Maps. It will lead you straight to the parking area of the trek. You can further navigate from there using the clearly visible signboards that lead you to the checking gate.

If you are dependent on public transport, you can hop on the frequent BMTC buses available from the Majestic bus terminus to Chikkaballapur. From Chikkaballapur, you can hire a tuk-tuk from the station to Kalavara Village (the starting place of the trek), or you can also walk for 3 Km.

Where To Eat

There are no restaurants or snack shops at the base or summit of the hike. Bring food or snacks, especially if you are planning for a sunrise 4 AM hike as no shops would be open at that hour.

After descending down, you can refresh yourself by buying coconut water, just after the forest checking gate. He accepts both online payments and cash. Restaurants can be found after a 15-minute ride from the base.

Hiking Route:

Hiking route marked on the rocks along the trail

The trek starts from the Kalavara village and ends at the Shiva temple on the hilltop, which is surrounded by fort ruins. The trek route is marked with red arrows, but owing to the weather and harsh environments, the trail markers are not visible at about 40% – 50% of the journey. However, this is only a mild inconvenience, as the trail is paved in a manner where there is no way to get lost in this hike, as the path guides you straight to the top.

At The Skandagiri Summit:

Temple at the Skandagiri summit

You can inspect the historically significant Lord Shiva temple with ‘Nandi.’  At the hilltop, you can also marvel at the 18th-century architecture that seems to still be very viable through the fort ruins. The Nandi hills and the other nearby settlements can be seen from the summit of the Skandagiri.

About Skandagiri betta

Standing proudly at approximately 4430 feet, Skandagiri Betta emerges as a beloved trekking hotspot near Bangalore . Dubbed Kalavara Durga Betta, this natural marvel rests within the scenic expanse of the Chikkaballapura district, a mere 60 kilometres away from the bustling city of Bangalore.

Among the cluster of five prominent hills in Chikkaballapura, collectively known as the Panchagiri, Skandagiri holds its place alongside Nandi Giri (Nandi Hill), Chandra Giri, Brahma Giri, and Hema Giri. While the allure of Skandagiri beckons adventurers to its slopes, a day trip to Nandi Hills from Bangalore remains an equally popular pursuit among locals, adding to the region’s vibrant outdoor appeal.

Skandagiri betta

Renowned for its breathtaking sunrise vistas, the hill attracts night trekkers eager to witness nature’s spectacle unfold. Offering panoramic views of Muddenahalli Village and Nandi Hill, Skandagiri’s allure is undeniable. However, its fame comes at a price—the trail remains bustling with activity at all hours. Commencing as early as 4 AM, the initial trekking groups aim to conquer the summit by 6 AM, just in time to greet the sun’s majestic ascent.

Views of sunrise Skandagiri

At the pinnacle, you’ll discover a stone temple honouring a Hindu deity, accompanied by remnants of an ancient fort. Honouring the site’s religious sanctity by removing your shoes before entering the temple premises is essential. Respecting these sacred beliefs adds reverence to your trekking experience and ensures harmony with the spiritual essence of the surroundings.

Temple at the peak Skandagiri

While the trail remains accessible year-round, it’s prudent to steer clear during rainy seasons when the rocks and boulders turn treacherously slippery. Opting for a morning trek is advisable, as the rising temperatures throughout the day can make the journey arduous and uncomfortable.

How to Get to Skandagiri Base?

The trek commences at the forest checkpoint in Kalawara village, approximately 60 kilometres from Bangalore city. Accessible via a road journey of about 1 hour and 20 minutes, heading towards the airport, Kalawara (also spelled as Kalavara) village serves as the gateway to this adventure. Ample parking facilities are available at the Papagni temple in Kalawara village, although it’s worth noting the presence of numerous monkeys around the temple premises.

While some concerns about locals attempting to puncture car tyres have been voiced, it’s reassuring to observe the considerable number of cars and bikes safely parked in the lot, indicating a prevalent sense of security among visitors.

Trekkers embark on this exhilarating adventure amid nature’s splendour, starting and finishing at the forest checkpoint, conveniently situated just 800 meters from the Papagni temple in Kalawara village. Prepare for a rigorous yet rewarding trekking experience amidst Skandagiri’s rugged landscape.

Trekking Agency

My return to the peak marked my second ascent along this trail. My initial trek, undertaken with friends many years ago, predated the trail’s commercialization and the requirement for permits.

Today, securing permission from forest officials is a prerequisite for embarking on this journey, with the first batch setting off at 4 AM. On this occasion, I opted to join the expedition organized by Plan the Unplanned , who meticulously coordinated the entire trip from Bangalore. Priced at INR 1448, the package included transportation to and from Bangalore, ensuring a hassle-free experience. The trek leads were exceedingly amicable, adding a delightful touch to the adventure.

While a trekking agency facilitated my second trek, tackling the trail independently remains feasible. Permits, obtained online for INR 300 per person, grant access to the straightforward path devoid of complexities requiring guidance. However, should assistance be desired, local guides are readily available at the checkpoint, offering their expertise for hire.

Important Information

  • For those embarking on this trail independently, securing forest permission online before reaching the starting point is essential, as only 200 trekkers are permitted daily.
  • Ensure you carry a valid photo identification (hard or soft copy).
  • Opt for comfortable and sturdy footwear to navigate the potentially slippery terrain.
  • Pack a small daypack and include extra socks for added comfort.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the trek by carrying at least 2 litres of drinking water.
  • Don’t forget to bring small snacks to fuel your journey and enjoy at the peak.
  • Pack a first aid kit and a jacket to prepare for unforeseen circumstances.
  • Expect crowds on the trail and at the peak, and exercise patience and respect for fellow trekkers.
  • Beware of monkeys at the Papagni temple in Kalawara village; refrain from feeding them.
  • Respect the environment by disposing of garbage properly. Carry your trash with you and dispose of it in designated bins.
  • Toilet facilities are available at the base of the trek.
  • While no shops are along the trail or peak, you may encounter a tender coconut vendor selling biscuits.
  • Exercise caution on the trail by maintaining a slow and alert pace. Take small steps and avoid rushing. Safety should always be a priority.

Is Skandagiri Night Trek Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

The Skandagiri trekking trail offers a safe environment for solo female trekkers, thanks to its straightforward path leading to the peak and clear markings. However, having a trekking buddy is advisable, particularly considering the presence of rocks and slippery sections that may pose challenges.

Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.

The journey to Kalawara village can also feel isolated and daunting, especially at night. Having a companion adds an extra layer of security and peace of mind, ensuring a more enjoyable and secure trekking experience.

Closing Notes

Undoubtedly, the Skandagiri night trek is one of the most remarkable treks near Bangalore . The journey is rewarding, offering breathtaking views from the summit that make every step worthwhile. However, brace yourself for the crowds that flock to the trail and gather at the peak, as this popular trekking destination attracts numerous adventurers seeking its scenic beauty.

What to pack?

Since this is a night trek, it is good to carry a jacket or sweater to keep warm. Other trekking essentials like flashlights with extra batteries, enough water (at least 2 L) and high calorie snacks, emergency medications and a basic first aid kit, bandages, sunscreen, cap/hat and a light weight bag to carry everything in. Wear good quality trekking shoes with breathable socks to have a comfortable trekking experience. Phone connectivity can be difficult past the Papagni temple.

The Skandagiri Night Trek

The trek to the Skandagiri betta covers approximately 4 km (one way), and it take around 3-4 hours to complete the ascent. It can be considered to be of moderate difficulty and anyone with a basic fitness level can do this. The Skandagiri Night Trek starts at the Papagni Temple located at the base of the Skandagiri Hills in the Kalavara village. The trek can be a bit difficult, especially if it is your first time, since there is no well laid out trail to follow. But you will find many signs and signboards that point you towards the right direction all through the trek.

skandagiri night view

The Skandagiri sunrise trek starts with an easy walk to the Forest Checkpost from the Papagni temple which is about 800 meters. The next stretch is mostly hopping over boulders and rocky terrains, followed by a very steep climb to the hilltop in the final stretch. Stepping over huge and sometimes slippery boulders will be the main part of your trek. The trail can get quite dusty and the vegetation are mainly shrubby along the way. But the entire journey up is just as refreshing as you walk listening to the sounds of the nature and chill of the night with stars shining above you. Bring your flashlights (with extra batteries) as there is no other source of light along the dark trail. Make sure to take enough breaks and pack up enough snacks and water to keep yourself energized and hydrated.

Take care to wear comfortable fitted clothes to avoid any discomfort during the trek. Avoid resting near any vegetation to avoid insect or reptile bites. One should be extra careful while resting or stepping on loose boulders.

Skandagiri Peak

Namma Trip usually assigns a guide per group to help you throughout the trek and keep everyone together. It is wise to stay with your group since sightings of wild animals in the area is not unheard of! The trek will get steeper at some points along the way, so make sure to watch your step and take help when necessary. This is where a pair of good quality trekking shoes would come in handy – they will give you good grip and a strong step.

Once you reach the peak, find a spot for yourself to view the sunrise! The splash of reds and oranges on the sky as you witness the sunrise are some of the best ever. So, make sure to capture the memory well. This point will also give you a great 360° view of Chikkaballapura village and the surrounding hills (if the day is not too cloudy).
