Boys Travel Basketball Teams
Fastbreak Sports’ travel basketball program is for players in 2nd – 9th grade who are looking for a competitive and fun basketball experience. Each player will have two opportunities to get better each week (one team practice, one skills session) in addition to games. Practices will be built around concepts that prioritize the development of the individual and the team, preparing for competitive game play on weekends.
Why play for Fastbreak?
- DEVELOPMENT FIRST – Winning matters. But it’s not the only thing that matters. While our teams will strive to win each game they play, our program and coach’s first priority is the development of your child. Their skill set should be advancing day-to-day and week-to-week. Each practice and game should be allowing your kid to use new skill sets that will propel their game forward.
- GAME TRANSFERRABLE EMPHASES – Our travel program is designed to teach principles and skills that make a difference in game play for your child. All skills are nice, but the skills and reads that translate into making a school team or getting more playing time are our main focus. It might take more time to teach, but we are going to emphasize man-to-man defense, offensive motion principles and other concepts that translate in game play situations.
- GREAT COACHES – Your team will be coached by one of our amazing coaches with experience playing or coaching at the highest level. That coach will be with you for the entire season for practices and games. The best teams have continuity and grow together!
- MORE THAN BASKETBALL – It’s about more than just basketball. Playing for Fastbreak means you are also being coached on how to be a great teammate, a great leader and elite competitor.
- THE GEAR – As part of the travel season package ($1,995), all players will receive a full reversible uniform (jersey and shorts) along with additional gear such as: team sweatshirts, shooting shirts, socks, etc.
League Details
- PRACTICES – All players will have two opportunities to get better per week, with team practices beginning on October 28th, and running through early March. Teams will have a Saturday team practice (90 minutes) on the Upper East Side. Additionally, you can choose your weekday skills class, and those will begin in after Thanksgiving Break.
- GAMES – Games will be played primarily on Sundays, with a possible Saturday. All teams are scheduled to play in the 55 Swish League in Manhattan. Game sites will be Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Financial District, and Basketball City (Pier 36).

Team United is a program with a strong history of success in the North Carolina region where the team is well known. Their EYBL team consistently dresses a number of players who will go on to play varying levels of college basketball. Much of that success has been built by creating a grassroots program that develops players at a young age with their winning system. Team United's 2021 team is a part of that system. We were able to catch up with Coach Canty and Coach Gray and ask about their upcoming season and their prospects of winning a IndiHoops World Title.
HWI: What separates the Team United organization from the myriad of other AAU programs across the country?
Coach Canty: Our Mission at Team United is to promote a competitive basketball program, with the objective to teach life skills to youth interested in pursuing basketball as a means of getting a free education.
HWI: What is the back story on how the Team United Organization was created?
Coach Canty: Team United was formed in 2005 by combining two former Charlotte AAU programs that had the same focus in mind by helping the youth of the Charlotte basketball community.
HWI: Who are some notable players who have worn the Team United uniform?
Coach Canty:
- Hassan Whiteside of the Miami Heat
- Jerrell Eddie of the Washington Wizards
- Ian Miller a former Florida State University Standout and current Pro
- Kennedy Meeks a former McDonald's All-American and UNC Chapel Hill player
- Sindarious Thornwell University of South Carolina & SEC stand out
HWI: For your 2021 team, do you expect to have much of your roster in tact from last year, what if any gaps are you looking to fill before next summer?
Coach Obe: The 2021 team has 7 players returning from last year's roster. We needed to add more size and skill in the interior and we managed to get that done this fall.
HWI: Describe the team's 2016 summer season and point out any significant tournament victories or games that stand out in your mind.
Coach Obe: The team made great progress month over month last year and the crescendo was winning the USBA National Championship.
HWI: What is your team's philosophy on offense and defense?
Coach Obe: Our philosophy on both ends [of the court] is that all 5 players on the court have trust and maintain a high level of engagement [while playing].
HWI: Who are some players to watch from your team next season?
Coach Obe: The team has several players with great upside. However, at this moment a couple of players to watch are 6'8 John Butler and 6'6 Josiah Dowd. Both players have high major size with great athleticism.
HWI: How many opportunities has your squad had to play west coast teams? How did you fair against those teams?
Coach Obe: We haven't played any west coast teams.
HWI: What was your record last year?
Coach Obe: We did not keep count.
HWI: What style of play is Team United Known for?
Coach Obe: We play High IQ basketball. We will trust each other defensively We will execute at a high level offensively.
HWI: What would it mean for your team to compete for a national championship next summer?
Coach Obe: Our goals is to improve month over month as a group and individually. If that nets us a championship game this summer, we'll be ready.

The Ultimate Guide To Starting Your Travel Basketball Team
If you are interested in starting a travel basketball team you will definitely need a coach(es), players, equipment, uniforms, a place to practice, funding and of course tournaments to compete with other teams. Travel basketball can be a very rewarding experience for players, coaches and even the parents! If starting a team is something you have been thinking about doing but you’re just not sure how to get started then you have come to the right place.
I have years of experience operating and coaching a travel basketball team and want to help you. In this article, I am providing my list of 14 essential steps to help you start your travel basketball team today!
Before I begin I want to be up front with you. Travel sports can be extremely beneficial for our youth in both developing their basketball skills and providing them with a safe place to grow and mature. However, travel sports can be time consuming because they require careful planning and organization. They can also be expensive. But if this is something you want to do please stick with me as I guide you through the steps you need to start your very own travel basketball team and setting it on the path to success.
Step 1: Vision And Goals For Your Travel Basketball Team
Step 2: assemble a dedicated team to support your travel basketball team, step 3: establish your team’s identity, step 4: budgeting for your travel basketball team, step 5: secure funding and sponsorships for your travel basketball players, step 6: set up travel basketball tryouts, step 7: secure gym space for your players to practice, step 8: register your travel basketball team, step 9: travel team insurance, step 10: develop a training program for your players, step 11: organize a travel basketball team tournament schedule, step 12: foster travel team chemistry and culture, step 13: communicate effectively, step 14: monitor progress and adapt, conclusion:.
Before diving into the logistics, it’s crucial to establish a clear vision and goals for your travel basketball team. Determine the age group you wish to target, the skill level you want to compete at, and the overall purpose of the team. Are you focused on player development, competition, or a combination of both? This clarity will guide your decision-making process throughout the journey.
I started my travel team many years ago when I was coaching my son in a youth recreation league. A couple parents expressed interest in the travel basketball phenomenon so I ventured out to start a team. This was my first time so I really didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t exactly clearly define a vision or goals but I knew that I wanted to start a team to give my son and his friends an opportunity to enhance their skills by playing against some tougher competition and that’s exactly what I got!I
If you are starting your own travel basketball team I encourage you to consider your end goals. Knowing this information can help you determine what kind of team you want to coach, how much of a time commitment is required and the level of competition.
Building a successful travel basketball team requires a committed group of individuals to operate your program. Recruit trustworthy coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, and other supporting staff members who share your vision and have experience in coaching basketball. Additionally, having a reliable administrative team to handle logistics, finances, and communications is essential. I suggest parent volunteers for these roles.
I quickly learned that I needed a team of supporters. My spouse helped me manage the day to day administrative requirements and believe me there are a lot of administrative requirements operating a travel team. I also leaned on my assistant coach. Looking back I wish I had more support which is why I included this very important step.
Create a unique team name, logo, and uniform design that reflects your team’s personality and values. This branding will help create a sense of pride and unity among players, coaches, and supporters. Remember to ensure your team’s branding complies with any local or regional regulations. This is especially important when you are purchasing uniforms.
I always enjoyed reading the schedule for an upcoming tournament and seeing the various and creative team names. Every team needs a good name so this is an extremely important step. Plus, it’s good for marketing to attract players especially as your program grows. Your travel team is a brand so make sure you have a good team name and logo. Be sure to equip your players with matching gear to advertise your team. Believe it or not but this makes you and your team look professional. Don’t forget that your parents will want to purchase team shirts to show their pride in your team during games.
Travel basketball costs money. It is critical to plan for all of your expenses before you start recruiting so you can communicate the individual price per player to the parents and avoid asking for more money during the season.
This is also a good time to talk about setting up a team bank account. Although this isn’t required it will help you keep your team’s funds in a safe place and easier to track.
The basic costs associated with most travel teams include the following:
- Gym cost
- Team registration (for each hosting organization)
- Tournament registration
- Administrative supplies (paper to print rosters, birth certs, report cards for team binder)
- Travel expenses (Fuel, lodging, food)
- Team Insurance
- Background checks
- Equipment (game and practice basketballs, coach clipboard
- Other expenses that are helpful, but optional:
- Personal training
- Training equipment (bands, cones, weighted basketball, etc)
Travel basketball teams incur various expenses as mentioned above. Seek out potential sponsors or partners who can contribute financially or provide in-kind support. Local businesses, sports organizations, or even parents of team members might be willing to contribute. Alternatively, you can organize fundraising events or seek grants to help cover expenses.
Fundraising was easy when my team was in elementary school. I secured a couple days in front of a neighborhood grocery store and the players solicited donations in their uniforms. It was always a hit! But as they got older it got a little tougher. They weren’t as cute anymore.
There are creative ways to fund your team but remember not all of your players or candidates will be able to afford to play travel basketball without being sponsored.
Keep in mind there will almost always be an individual fee per player. This is how I did it most of the time. I got to know my parents and what they were comfortable paying.
To form a competitive team, conduct tryouts to evaluate players’ skills, athleticism, and commitment. Advertise tryout dates, times, and location through local sports organizations, schools, social media, and community bulletin boards. Clearly communicate the expectations and selection criteria to avoid any misunderstandings.
You will need to secure gym space and it will likely come at a cost. You can charge each player a small entry fee to cover your expenses. This is normal.
Depending on your vision you will need to select between 8 – 15 players. Keep in mind the more players you have the harder it will be to get all of them playing time. Having a small number of players on your roster can limit your abilities during tournaments. Players get injured, foul trouble and/or just plain tired. This is why it’s so important to have a vision.
As mentioned above you will need gym space. The middle and high schools in your area are great resources for available gym space. You will need to reach out and will likely need team insurance.
An alternative to gym space are the outdoor courts. I used outdoor courts when I needed additional practice times. The use of outdoor courts cuts down on expenses. A downside is availability because it is difficult to reserve outdoor courts.
You will be required to register your team with each organization that is hosting tournaments. Be cautious about signing up for too many as your costs will increase. Each organization has rules that must be followed so it might be wise to stick to one organization as you start out. This should make it easier for you to manage the team as you learn about the rules.
There are several organizations to choose from but they vary in all areas. The most popular is probably AAU . AAU is pretty much everywhere. USSSA is also popular. There are many more. A quick google search for travel basketball tournaments in your area will get the ball rolling.
You want to protect yourself and your players with some level of liability insurance. This is typically easy to find and is normally offered when you register your team. Review your policy carefully to ensure it is what your team needs. I made the expensive mistake of purchasing more coverage than I needed for several years. If your travel program is connected to a recreation league your team may be covered by that program negating the need for additional insurance.
Craft a comprehensive training program that focuses on individual skill development, team tactics, physical conditioning, and mental preparedness. Regular practices and training sessions will help your team improve and grow together. Consider partnering with local basketball training academies or hiring specialized coaches to provide expertise in specific areas. This will allow you to focus on coaching your team strategy.
I struggled to develop the fundamentals of my players while trying to teach them how to play competitive basketball. Travel basketball is very different from recreational basketball. It’s absolutely essential for your players to know how to work together. I joined forces with several trainers who charged a fee to work on fundamentals so my practice time could be spent on team tactics.
Research and register your team for tournaments that align with your goals and competition level. Develop a schedule that balances local and regional competitions, considering travel distances and costs. Monitor tournament registrations in advance, as they often have limited spots that fill up quickly.
This is where travel basketball teams incur the biggest cost. Most tournaments cost roughly the same amount but the distance from your home base and number of days will dictate your overall cost. If you are starting a team with rookie travel basketball players you might want to be cognizant of what tournaments you enter. There is nothing worse than a weekend playing in a tournament with advanced teams that run up the score and discourage your players from ever wanting to play again!
Building a strong team culture is essential for success. Encourage open communication, respect, and collaboration among players and coaches. Organize team-building activities, create team traditions, and emphasize sportsmanship on and off the court. Establish clear expectations for behavior, commitment, and academic performance.
Your team is a team. Include the player’s parents, if possible. Everyone should be working towards the same goal. A team that works together stays motivated when the games get tough.
Maintain open lines of communication with players, parents, and staff. Regularly share practice schedules, game updates, and any changes to ensure everyone is informed. Utilize communication channels such as team websites, social media, group messaging apps, and regular in-person meetings to keep everyone connected.
Continuously assess your team’s progress and adapt your strategies as needed. Regularly evaluate players’ development, and adjust training programs. Don’t be afraid to reschedule a tournament if you don’t think your team is ready.
Starting a travel basketball team is actually a simple process. The list above is just a guide on what steps you can take so please don’t feel overwhelmed with information. To start the team, you basically need a coach, players, practice location, balls, uniforms, and a couple of tournaments.

Introducing the Des Moines Register's 2024 All-Iowa girls basketball teams
The Iowa girls high school basketball season has come and gone, and just weeks ago, five state champions were crowned.
Several of those teams were led by the best players in the state. Johnston and Clear Creek Amana won their respective state titles with undefeated records.
That is just one example of the level of competition in girls basketball this season, which doesn’t make choosing players for this list any easier.
Some players were selected based on their regular season performances. Others made the cut because of how they played in the state tournament. Team success also factored into the decisions.
And, like with every end-of-season list, some of the top players will be left off.
More: A look at Johnston girls basketball's historic, undefeated run to 2024 state championship
Especially with a list as selective as this. The Des Moines Register’s All-Iowa list features an Elite Team group and first teams for all five classes. There are six players on each team, and athletes chosen for the Elite Team are automatically included in the first team list for their class.
There are 20 honorable mentions selected from all classes.
Here is who made the cut for the 2023-24 season.
Names are listed alphabetically.
- Bailey Birmingham, Jr., Norwalk
There is no doubt that Birmingham is a baller, leading the state – all classes – with 27.4 points per game. That’s nearly three points per game more than the next highest scorer. Her scoring – plus 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.4 assists – is a large part of the reason why the Warriors went from 6-16 last year to 18-5 this season.
More: Norwalk girls basketball's terrific turnaround linked to Bailey Birmingham, new coach Josef Sigrist
- Callie Levin, Sr., Solon
The Iowa women’s basketball signee propelled Solon to a 24-3 record and a state championship. She averaged 22 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.8 steals and 4.5 assists in her senior season. Levin’s 27-point, seven-rebound and five-assist performance in the title game was one of the most dominant of the tournament.

Jenica Lewis, Soph., Johnston
One of the top recruits in the country did all the little things well, but she saved her best basketball for the state tournament. Lewis was the leading scorer in all three of Johnston’s state tournament games, helping the Dragons claim the title with a 26-0 record. She averaged 12.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.3 steals on the season.
More: Who are the best players in the 2024 Iowa high school girls state basketball tournament?
Averie Lower, Soph., Clear Creek Amana
Led the Clippers to a 26-0 record and a state title as a sophomore, including a 17-point performance in the championship game. She averaged 17.7 points, five rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.2 assists per game while shooting 58.2% overall and 49.7% from behind the arc – which is the best success rate by any player with over 100 3-point attempts.

- Payton Petersen, Sr., Dike-New Hartford
One of the best volleyball players in the state is also one of the best basketball players. Petersen averaged 18.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.9 steals en route to the state championship. For those keeping track, that’s four basketball titles and three volleyball titles for Petersen.

- Aili Tanke, Sr., Johnston
The Iowa State women’s basketball signee averaged 15.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals on a Dragons’ roster loaded with college basketball-level talent. Tanke shot 57% from the field, and her 49.6% success rate from 3-point range was among the best in Iowa.

Sports | Westford seventh-graders, Lowell fifth-graders win basketball titles
Lowell fifth-graders repeat as mvyl champs.
The Westford seventh-grade travel basketball team capped a championship season by defeating Reading, 48-41, Sunday, at Jack Ryan Middle School in Tewksbury.
A determined bunch, Westford (9-7) won its last four regular season games to earn the sixth seed in the playoffs. The team opened postseason play by beating Burlington, 49-44, a team that had its number all during the regular season with its size and perimeter shooting.
They advanced to the semifinals, stopping Bedford, 37-22. The game was a defensive battle with very low scoring in the first half before Westford settled in putting some distance between them to move on to the championship game.
Representing Westford were Will Geller, Aarav Choudhary, Gavin Jondro, Colin Baker, Matthew Farley, Connor Adams, John Mangiaratti, Max Adams, Russell Coward, Luke Magnuson and Ryan Curley. The team was coached by Kevin Farley, Jeff Magnuson, Mark Adams and Russ Coward.
Lowell repeats
In a repeat performance, the Lowell fifth-grade boys travel basketball A team won its second consecutive Merrimack Valley Youth Basketball League championship, beating Bedford, N.H., 35-12, Sunday at Wilmington High School.
This marked back-to-back championships for Lowell, which topped Methuen in the finals last year.
Representing Lowell were Devilonne Soopholphady, Drew Durkin, Nolan Mateo, Robbie Gooding, Carter Stephens, Prince Adams Musiige, Wesley McDonald, Grayson Chou, Elias Koko, Jonathan Vargas-Pena, Ethan Vargas and Ryder Swett. The team was coached by Edwin Alcantaro and Elliot Vargas.

Dodgers' James Paxton: Won't travel to Korea with team
Paxton isn't expected to join the Dodgers for their season-opening two-game set against the Padres in South Korea, though he's physically fine, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
Paxton isn't dealing with any sort of injury, but he wouldn't be pitching in any capacity for either of the two games in Seoul, so the Dodgers are opting to have him work on building up at home rather than making the long trip overseas. Though an unspecified health issue resulted in a reduction of the guaranteed portion of the contract Paxton signed with Los Angeles in January, the left-hander has looked healthy while getting in limited work this spring, allowing just one run on two hits with a 7:2 K:BB over four innings. Paxton is lined up for a spot at the back of the Dodgers' rotation for the upcoming campaign.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Inter Miami star Lionel Messi is unlikely to play in Saturday’s road game against D.C. United due to a right hamstring strain, coach Tata Martino said after a 3-1 win over Nashville SC on Wednesday night.
Messi left Inter Miami’s Concacaf Champions Cup second leg match with what is translated from Spanish as “muscle overload.” Martino said Messi would undergo imaging to see the extent of the injury.
Messi attempted to play in the second half of the game against Nashville, but walked off as a surprise substitute five minutes into the half.
“We didn’t want to run a risk,” Martino said about Messi after he scored a goal and assisted another to help Inter Miami advance to the quarterfinal of the Champions Cup.
“We tried to see if he could go a little longer, but we preferred for him to get out of the game.”

Inter Miami has a training session scheduled Friday before traveling to Washington D.C. for Saturday’s 2 p.m. ET match against D.C. United.
Following the match, Messi is expected to join the Argentina national team for two friendlies that will serve as warmups for this summer’s Copa America.
Argentina will play against El Salvador in Philadelphia on March 22, and Costa Rica in Los Angeles on March 26.
Messi could miss two Inter Miami games: Inter Miami vs. New York Red Bulls on March 23, and Inter Miami vs. New York City FC on March 30 for rest purposes.
“I don’t want to risk it, but I would imagine for Saturday’s match he will not be available,” Martino said. “Looking ahead, we’ll evaluate. He’ll get some imaging done. And we’ll see how it develops.”
Inter Miami beat Nashville SC 5-3 on aggregate in their Champions Cup Round-of-16 matchup. The club is also tied with four other teams atop the MLS Eastern Conference with seven points after a 2-1-1 (win-draw-loss) start to the season.
These Tennessee basketball players left a very good team. How's that working out? | Strange
Just for kicks, bear with me a minute and travel into an alternate universe …
Tennessee’s Vols head to the SEC tournament in Nashville this week with several questions to be answered. Is sophomore B.J. Edwards ready to step in at the point if Kennedy Chandler’s ankle injury persists? How will Drew Pember match up against Florida’s mobile big men?
Can Tennessee get adequate scoring in the paint from Brandon Huntley-Hatfield and D.J. Burns? Now that Justin Powell has finally settled in at one school, will his 3-point accuracy hold up over several games?
And can Davonte Gaines be the defensive stopper against high-scoring Alabama and Kentucky?
None of those questions are relevant, of course. You should recognize the names from Tennessee seasons of yesteryear. They, and others, left UT’s roster seeking greener pastures.
It’s amazing in this transfer portal era how many ex-Vols are still out there somewhere. Rick Barnes could fill a 13-man roster with players who would still be eligible this week had they stayed.
I’m not suggesting by any means he would trade his real 2023-24 roster for one made up of ex-VFLs. No, this group is doing just fine.
With the regular season done, let’s see how the players who left Tennessee have fared.
Only two are full-time NBA players and both were one-and-done at UT.
Jaden Springer , the 28th pick of the 2021 draft, has landed in Boston after two-plus seasons in Philadelphia. He’s averaging 2.2 points.
Julian Phillips, a second-round pick in 2023, is getting 7.4 minutes a game as a rookie with the Chicago Bulls.
Keon Johnson and Kennedy Chandler , the other two one-and-dones, both played in the NBA last season. They are currently teammates in the G League with the Long Island Nets.
As for ex-VFLs in the college ranks, no one has thrived like Drew Pember.
Pember spent two years as a gangly reserve in his hometown, never finding a solid niche in the rotation. He wrapped up a third stellar year at UNC-Asheville and was recently named Big South Conference player of the year for a second consecutive season. He’s had three games of 40-plus points.
Olivier Nkamhoua would have been featured in Tennessee’s offense had he returned this season. Instead, he had a nice year at Michigan, averaging 14.8 points and 7.1 rebounds.
The trade-off? Michigan has suffered through a dreadful season, 8-22 at this writing.
Ditto for Brandon Huntley-Hatfield . He’s averaging 12.5 points in his second season at Louisville, but the Cardinals have been as bad as Michigan if not worse.
Davonte “Ticket” Gaines left UT after two seasons, following Vol assistant Kim English to his head-coaching gig at George Mason. After two seasons, Gaines followed English again, this time to Providence, where he averages 8.9 points.
B.J. Edwards was a seldom-seen freshman at UT last year. He jumped to SMU to join former Tennessee assistant Rob Lanier. Edwards starts and averages 3.8 points.
Another onetime Vol, Quentin Diboundje , followed another UT aide, Mike Schwartz, to East Carolina. Diboundje averages 6.8 points as a junior.
Justin Powell did not, in fact, settle down at one school. After a season at Auburn, another at Tennessee and a third at Washington State, Powell turned pro. Undrafted, he’s with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ G-league team.
D.J. Burns redshirted at UT in 2018-19, so this is his sixth year in college – three at Winthrop and now two at N.C. State. He’s averaging 12.1 ppg and scored 15 against the Vols in December.
Finally, another Vol redshirt, 6-foot-11 Handje Tamba , is a sophomore at Weber State, averaging 1.8 points.
