  • Things to do

Located along the fertile slopes of the Poás Volcano, Doka Estate has been growing and roasting award-winning coffee for three generations. This tour allows visitors to gain an intimate understanding of how coffee is grown, harvested, processed and produced in both Costa Rica and around the world.

From the seed to the cup, the Doka Estate Coffee tour will teach you everything you need to know about how coffee is grown and made. The tour begins in the seedbed, where expert guides will speak about the varieties and growing habits of coffee plants, as well as the local history and geography of coffee production.

The next stop is the processing plant, which is very old and was, in fact, declared to be an Architectural Heritage for Humanity site in 2003. Here you’ll observe the process of de-pulping and fermenting the grains, which readies them to be peeled and then exported or roasted in the country. Finally, you will visit the roasting plant Café Tres Generaciones and learn about the various roasts that are offered before finishing at the gift shop with the option of sampling the eight different blends made at Doka Estate.

Monday through Friday, tours leave at 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm. On Saturdays and Sundays tours times are at the same with, except there are no 3:30 pm tours.

Traveler Comments

The entire experience at Doka was great. I only wished I purchased more coffee!

Mario was an excellent driver. He even arrived early and once again, the van was immaculate. The tour of Doka estate was well worth the effort. The tour was very informative and our docent spoke English very well. He guided our group through the various stages of coffee production. We stopped here on our way to La Fortuna. The tour took about two hours. Following the tour, participants had the opportunity to sample coffee, and of course, make some purchases.

Very relaxed and well paced tour. Informative and it was great being able to sample the coffees.

Doka Estate - El Veradero Coffee Tour

Free vacation planning.

The Doka Coffee Estate is an award-winning, internationally known coffee producer and farm that sits just outside of San Jose. If you are a coffee lover or an agricultural enthusiast, this tour is for you. You will learn all aspects of the coffee production process from bean to cup.

Your tour will begin when you are picked up from your hotel and driven to the Doka Estate in the beautiful Central Valley of Costa Rica. Coffee grows extremely well here because of the climate and growing conditions within the valley. Upon arrival, your bilingual guide will give you a brief history of this family-run business and show you around the farm while explaining the importance growing coffee has had in establishing Costa Rica’s role in the world economy.

The Vargas family, owners of the Doka Estate, has been growing coffee since the 1940s. It is interesting to hear how they first started and how their business began to boom with the development of the internet and the onset of tourism. They have won the World’s Best Coffee Award for two years in a row and continue to export their beans all over the world.

Do you know where your coffee comes from? Have you ever seen a coffee plant before? It can be hard to imagine for those who live outside the tropics, and it can be super interesting to discover what goes into crafting your morning “cup o’ joe”.

You’ll learn about three main aspects of coffee production - germination, harvesting, and roasting. It seems that Doka has their own “secret” recipe that is tailored to the particular climate and growing conditions of their farm. They also explain how roasting and harvesting play a big role in the way your coffee tastes.

Of course there are plenty of opportunities to sample the coffee throughout the tour to see if it is indeed the “world’s best coffee”. When the tour comes to an end you will have a chance to explore the gift shop, where they sell bags of coffee to take home and other souvenirs.

Loved the in depth tour from fruit to package. Fascinating to see the complicated process that we take for granted when we pour a cup of coffee! Our guide was so informative!

So enjoyed learning and walking the plantation. Coffee is delicious treat at the end.

Too expensive compared to other tours. The driver was caught in the traffic and got delayed, but he called the hotel lobby and kept us informed, he apologized many times for this, even though it was not his fault, so nice of him.

A novel experience for true coffee lovers.

I'm a specialty coffee lover and this was a great experience. We were welcomed with multiple blends of coffee on arrival, learned a lot about processing, growing, and the coffee economy, then had 6 or 7 blends of coffee to try at the end. For the price, this was a great experience.

As a coffee lover this was such a great experience! Right when you get in you get to sample different coffee types then another coffee before the tour. Never thought I’d say this…. But for once in my life I had to say no at the end to all the coffee haha! Very generous and nice. The guide Adriana was super sweet and answered all our questions. I enjoyed her presentations of the different coffee beans we could hold and touch and display of machines used. P.s. on the way to the tour we met Jimmy Roman who is an independent tour guide. Jimmy was so sweet, kind and helpful. He helped us with advice on places to go, places to eat and even stopped at breakfast and showed us a cute coffee spot on our way to the tour. I am so glad we met Jimmy and I look forward to booking him on a future tour and also sharing his info with others. Very genuine great guy!!

We took this tour while on tour with Caravan and it was very good. We enjoyed learning how coffee if grown, harvested, cleaned and roasted. Most of their coffee is processed using electricity but they still have a turn-of-the-century water powered coffee mill in operation. After the tour we sampled coffees and coffee candies in the company store. As part of our Caravan tour we were fed a great lunch! Thanks Doka family.

I did the more elevated tour that included a private guide to the Volcán Poás national park first, followed afterwards by the coffee tour and tasting at Doka estate. Seeing the Poás volcano was incredible, I cannot recommend enough. Our guide was named Jimmy Roman (hired by Doka estate, he’s an independent guide), and he really made the experience fantastic. He was kind, knowledgeable, and so personable. Seeing an active volcano crater was incredible. Jimmy had a nice car and drove us to the park, and afterwards we stopped for fresh strawberries at a local market. Going back to Costa Rica, I plan to hire him again as a private guide for other parts of the country. The Doka tour was great. Not too slow paced. Got a great overview of how coffee is grown, picked, and made into the beans you buy. I enjoyed tasting all their coffees, delicious! The estate is beautiful and well manicured. Gorgeous plants and flowers everywhere.

The drive to the plantation itself was very worthwhile as we observed many coffee bean pickers in action. We took the guided tour which started off with a little taste of the goods. Tour very informative and interesting - from plant, harvest and the age-old manufacturing methods still used today. The tour ended at the new and very nice gift shop where sampled what we ended up purchasing. Happy we chose this local plantation for a tour.

Beautiful views, friendly staff. A very knowledgeable guides with passion for coffee and the whole process,

Nice coffee plantantion, the tour guide was very professional and friendly. You can see several birds in the trails. The food can improve.

Great coffee experience. Our knowledgeable guide helped us understand the whole process- from where the plants originated, how they are planted, how harvest occurs, the cleaning process to the roasting.

As a Coffee Lover, your reviewer was really looking forward to this tours and it was lone of the highlights of our 2 week trip to Costa Rica. From the beautifully laid out grounds with all the wonderful wildlife that CR has to offer, to the excellent & informative guided tour, who would have thought they used a very early form of 'Hydro power' in the preparation of the beans! And yes, there are still dried outside in the sun. Once done, you get a chance to sample the various blends in the large and well stocked gift shop. There is also a large restaurant, serving good food. Highly Recommended.

The tour was great! We loved it so much that we bought coffee in the gift shop. We took advantage of their offer of free shipping. That was February 18th. Over a month later, our coffee has not arrived. I emailed asking for an update on my order last week. They responded right away saying it was a supply issue that was resolved and my order was being shipped that day. However, they were unable to provide a tracking number. A week later, they stopped responding to my emails and I still don't have my coffee. Dealing with this has ruined my experience.

In-depth look at traditional Costa Rican coffee production. Guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Lots of opportunities to sample different roasts and preparations of coffee. So good we ordered for free delivery to the US.
