Yellowcard Ocean Avenue 20th Anniversary Tour in Seattle
Posted by Logan Westom | Aug 6, 2023 | Concert Review | 0 |
Yellowcard w/ Mayday Parade, Anberlin, This Wild Life WaMu Theater, Seattle, WA 08.04.23
Seattle Concertgoers at the WaMu Theater in Seattle were treated to an unforgettable night of music on August 4th, 2023, as Yellowcard’s Ocean Avenue 20-Year Anniversary Tour took center stage. The crowd was comprised of fans of all ages, from younger new fans to older ones whose love for Yellowcard spans decades, and viewed this concert as embracing an old friend.
Celebrating two decades since the release of their iconic album “Ocean Avenue,” the band effortlessly transported the audience back to the early 2000s. The stage was adorned with images from the album cover, setting the nostalgic backdrop for a night of hits that defined a generation. The night started with the opening two tracks from the “Ocean Avenue”, Way Away and Breathing. Lead singer Ryan Key’s vocals sounded as powerful and evocative as ever, while the band’s chemistry and instrumental prowess were on full display.
Between songs, Ryan Key took a moment to reflect on the band’s journey and express gratitude for the unwavering support of their fans throughout the years. Playing the largest headlining show of their careers in Seattle and numerous other tour dates on the whole tour has left the band with a new sense accomplishment. The emotional connection between the band and the audience was palpable, creating an intimate atmosphere in the midst of a large venue.
From “Only One” to “Way Away,” each song was met with uproarious cheers and passionate sing-alongs. Along with “Hang You Up” when Derek Sanders from Mayday Parade joined the band on stage.
The night reached its crescendo during the encore, with Yellowcard delivering the song everyone had been waiting for. The song written 20 years ago that launched Yellowcard into the mainstream. The song the album and tour was named after. After some final thoughts and thank you’s Yellowcard launched into that chunky opening line of “Ocean Avenue” everyone loves. As the final notes of the night rang out, the crowd erupted into applause, honoring not only the band’s incredible performance but also the memories and emotions tied to their music.
The Yellowcard Ocean Avenue 20-Year Anniversary Tour in Seattle was more than just a concert; it was a celebration of a pivotal album and an era that continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many. During the many moments of thanks and moments of revelation from the band they ask if they continued as a band and wrote more music if people would continue to come out and support them. An astounding cheer erupted from the crowd. Take that as a yes Yellowcard.
With an impressive lineup featuring Mayday Parade , Anberlin, and This Wild Life as opening acts, the evening promised a nostalgic trip down memory lane for fans of the early 2000s pop-punk and alternative rock scene.
Kicking off the festivities, This Wild Life set the tone with their acoustic melodies and heartfelt lyrics. While they are self proclaimed as the “discount dashboard confessional”, “hot topic Mumford and sons” and “second rate second hand serenade” their sound uniquely their own. Another popular 200’s band, Anberlin took the stage and brought a wave of energy with their anthemic hits. The crowd’s response was immediate, as they sang along to familiar tunes and embraced the collective energy of the moment. They noted how much Seattle feels like a second home after recording many albums on Capital Hill. The third and final opener was Mayday Parade who unleashed their signature emotive performance, evoking memories of teenage heartaches and dreams. Their dynamic setlist showcased a blend of fan-favorites and newer tracks, reminding everyone why they’ve remained a staple in the alternative music scene.

Yellowcard Return, Announce Summer U.S. Tour
The band is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album ‘Ocean Avenue’
Yellowcard are returning to the road this summer. The band is touring for the first time in almost seven years to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their watershed album Ocean Avenue . The trek kicks off on July 5 at the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore and wraps up on August 8 at the Levitt Pavilion in Denver. Throughout the run, the band will be performing in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, and more alongside This Wild Life. Additional special guests Mayday Parade, Story of the Year, and Anberlin will appear on select dates.
“Announcing a Yellowcard tour is something I never thought we would get to do again,” says frontman Ryan Key. “Much less, a tour with bands of this caliber made up of such amazing people and good friends. Being given the opportunity to play music together again is truly a gift that we are not taking for granted. We are going to make these shows extremely special for all of the fans who we have missed so much these last six years.”
Tickets start at $29.50 and VIP packages will be available beginning with an Artist pre-sale on Wednesday, February 15 at 10am HERE . Additional pre-sales will be available throughout the week before general on sale starting on Friday, February 17 at 10am HERE .
Yellowcard retired as a band six years ago. They released their tenth (and final, for now) studio LP, Yellowcard , via Hopeless Records in 2016. They returned to the stage at Riot Fest in Chicago last September.
“When we stepped away in 2017, all of us thought it was truly the end,” the band said at the time. “However our journey together continues to surprise us.”
Certified double platinum in the US by the RIAA, gold in Canada, and silver in the UK, Ocean Avenue solidified Yellowcard’s indelible mark on the music world. The undying esteem that the album owns has not diminished in the twenty years since its release. With signature singles “Way Away,” “Only One,” and the title track “Ocean Avenue” among the 13 tracks, it not only marks their entrance into the mainstream but also the stratospheric success of the band whose subsequent albums cemented the band’s legacy in the history of alternative music.

Yellowcard Reunite for 20th Anniversary ‘Ocean Avenue’ U.S. Tour Dates
" If I could find you now, things would get better ." Well, Yellowcard fans, you'll be able to find the band back on the road, reuniting for their first concert tour in over six years, and it comes while supporting the 20th anniversary of the band's breakout album, Ocean Avenue .
The four-piece of Ryan Key, Sean Mackin, Ryan Mendez and Josh Portman first got together last fall, playing a headlining slot at Chicago's Riot Fest. From there, they felt there was some unfinished business and here we are in 2023 with the band celebrating the 20th anniversary of Ocean Avenue .
“Announcing a Yellowcard tour is something I never thought we would get to do again, much less, a tour with bands of this caliber made up of such amazing people and good friends,” says Key. “Being given the opportunity to play music together again is truly a gift that we are not taking for granted. We are going to make these shows extremely special for all of the fans who we have missed so much these last six years.”
Ocean Avenue was Yellowcard's fourth studio album, but it gave them their big break thanks to the title track, as well as the singles "Way Away," "Only One" and "Believe." The album has been certified double platinum in the U.S.
The tour gets underway July 5 in Baltimore, Md., with dates keeping the group on the road through Aug. 8 in Denver. Joining them on the run will be a wide variety of support acts. Mayday Parade, Story of the Year, Anberlin, The Wild Life and Emo Night Brooklyn will all spend time warming audiences up on select dates. See the full itinerary and who is playing with Yellowcard on what night in the tour listing toward the bottom of this post.
Tickets and VIP packages will be offered via a Yellowcard presale starting this Wednesday (Feb. 15) at 10AM local time. Additional presales will also be offered in the lead up to the Friday (Feb. 17) general public on sale, which also starts at 10AM local time. Visit Ticketmaster for your ticketing details.

Now they've revealed that they are heading out on tour across the US this Summer, as a celebration of their classic album Ocean Avenue . Released in 2003, Ocean Avenue saw the band ascend from scrappy Florida upstarts into bonafide pop-punk superstars.
