Live reviews

It was a complete joy to hear the new wave rockers, The Cars, reformed in 2010 to release their new album, Move Like This, and to hear that they were touring in support of the album was an even greater joy.

The Cars are such an interesting band due to their abilities to mix different genres to create an edgy sound. They have taken influence from pop, garage rock, protopunk, and even rockabilly. Greg Hawkes use of synthesizers in the music also gives their sound a unique quality. When performing live the band still dresses up in 80’s new wave attire wearing sunglasses and skinny ties. They seem to be restrained from any stage antics, but their performance is always tight and on key. Each band member is very talented and has an integral role in the band. Ric Ocasek plays a steady rhythm on the guitar and sings in an almost futuristic and robotic kind of way. Elliot Easton plays catchy, angular riffs on the guitar to create an edge to the sound. David Robinson plays a tight rhythm, being sure not to miss a beat on the drums, and Greg Hawkes plays all the crazy futuristic sounds and catchy leads on his synths.

The lights are usually spectacular during their performance, flashing bright entrancing colors across the stage while The Cars rock out to their futuristic pop-rock music. The crowd is usually enthusiastic during their performances, dancing to all the catchy songs, and singing back the choruses to songs like, “Just What I Needed” and “Let’s Go”. The Cars play a wide variety of songs that will be sure to please the crowd, which include songs from their old recordings as well as quite a bit from their new album.

Cars tour announces expanded 2023 schedule.

The largest schedule in the history of the Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour was unveiled to competitors shortly before the start of the season-ending North-South Shootout.

Late Models

Racing america headshot

A total of 19 race weekends comprises the 2023 season for the series. Of these events, a record 16 races will be contested for the CARS Late Model Stock Car Tour championship, while the Pro Late Model Tour will have 13 dates in their second season.

The 2023 schedule features the return of many tracks that were not a part of the CARS Tour calendar in 2022, starting with the season-opening race at Southern National Motorsports Park. The facility has not hosted the CARS Tour since 2020 and will welcome both divisions on March 11.

Other tracks returning to the CARS Tour schedule in 2023 are Florence Motor Speedway, Dillon Motor Speedway and Wake County Speedway. Florence and Wake County will each hold separate weekends for the LMSC and PLM Tour, while Dillon will only hold a PLM Tour event in April.

North Wilkesboro Speedway makes it grand return to the CARS Tour schedule following a successful debut in 2021 that featured NASCAR Hall-of-Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. Instead of being run in August, the North Wilkesboro date is now part of NASCAR’s All-Star week at the facility and will see both CARS Tour divisions run their features on Wednesday.

All-Star week at North Wilkesboro will not be the only time the CARS Tour runs an event on a weeknight. Caraway Speedway is set to host a doubleheader for the LMSC and PLM Tour on Wednesday, June 28, with the track’s prestigious North-South Shootout once again serving as the season finale for the CARS Tour in November.

The other crown jewel races for the CARS Tour are also returning for 2023. The Throwback 276 will maintain its normal place at Hickory Motor Speedway’s second date, while the $30,000-to-win Old North State Nationals will move from Caraway to a different location that will be announced later.

Additional details about the 2023 CARS Tour schedule are forthcoming. Below is the full schedule for both CARS Tour divisions:

  • March 11- Southern National Motorsports Park (LMSC/PLM)
  • March 25- Florence Motor Speedway (LMSC)
  • April 15- Dillon Motor Speedway (PLM)
  • April 22- Hickory Motor Speedway (LMSC/PLM)
  • May 5- Ace Speedway (LMSC/PLM)
  • May 17- North Wilkesboro Speedway (LMSC/PLM)
  • May 27- Tri-County Speedway (LMSC/PLM)
  • June 3- Langley Speedway (LMSC)
  • June 17- Dominion Raceway (LMSC)
  • June 28- Caraway Speedway (LMSC/PLM)
  • July 8- Wake County Speedway (PLM)
  • July 29- Hickory Motor Speedway (LMSC/PLM)
  • Aug. 11- Ace Speedway (LMSC)
  • Aug. 26- Wake County Speedway (LMSC)
  • Sept. 9- Goodyear All American Speedway (LMSC)
  • Sept. 23- Florence Motor Speedway (PLM)
  • Oct. 7- South Boston Speedway (LMSC/PLM)
  • Oct. 21- Tri-County Motor Speedway (LMSC/PLM)
  • Nov. 4- Caraway Speedway (LMSC/PLM)

Short Track Question: What Could a CARS Tour National Schedule Look Like?

As the 2023 Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour season winds down, the wait has begun for the announcement regarding the 2024 schedule. Many of the tracks on the schedule presumably will stay the same but others are in constant rotation and the series is always looking for new growth.

Earlier this week, the series retweeted a trending tweet asking where the series should go in 2024, and as one would expect there were a variety of answers.

Hmm we’re listening https://t.co/UUSbP8yWbf — CARS Tour (@CARSTour) September 11, 2023

Some suggested local tracks to the series like a return to Kingsport Speedway in Tennessee or Orange County Speedway in North Carolina. However, others suggested tracks outside of the southeast region that the CARS Tour calls home, like Slinger Speedway in Wisconsin, Anderson Speedway in Indiana and Stafford Speedway in Connecticut.

In case anyone didn’t know before, there is no true national touring late model stock series. The CARS Tour is widely considered the premier late model stock series of the southeast, and the NASCAR weekly series crowns a late model national champion, but that champion is decided based on points earned at driver’s home tracks, not against each other.

So, what if the CARS Tour branched out and created a national touring series for the late model stocks? Well, here is my idea for what that could look like, if it were to ever happen.

First and foremost, the series wouldn’t have to do away with the late model stock schedule it has now and rather could create this as an entirely separate thing. Another thing to note before I get into format and tracks is that these teams are often family run or simply much smaller than your typical NASCAR teams, so a 20-25 race schedule would not be logical for teams on a smaller budget.

Instead, a better idea would be a 17-race schedule, broken down into four regional segments with a grand finale at the end, these regions being the West Coast, the Northeast, the Midwest and the Southeast.

The West Coast

To begin the season, the series would start out on the West Coast for the first four races of this national series. There are multiple reasons you can start out west, the weather and the starting points of regional series to name a few. With many regional series not getting going heavy until the spring, the teams could possibly afford more time to be away from home if they’re not from the area.

To go along with that, the weather isn’t too hot during the early months of the year out west, whereas the Midwest and East Coast are often still pretty cold in the early months of the year. As for the tracks, my picks would be Evergreen Speedway in Washington, Tucson Speedway in Arizona, Kern County Raceway Park in California and The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada.

Evergreen is the premier track of the Pacific Northwest, home to a 0.625-mile, relatively flat oval that is no stranger to late model racing. As the only NASCAR-sanctioned home track in the region, the track contributes to the program that crowns NASCAR’s weekly late model national champion. In addition, the track also hosts the ARCA Menards West Series.

As for Tucson, the track has long been one of the staples of asphalt racing in the Southwest, even hosting the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series early on in the series’ existence. To this day the 0.375-mile track holds well-known super late model events such as the Turkey Shoot and the Chilly Willy 150.

Over in California, KCRP is one of the newer tracks, opening up just 10 years ago in 2013. The facility itself is top notch, hosting regional late model events as well as the ARCA West on the half-mile, high-banked track. The track was also recently scanned to iRacing, giving sim drivers the opportunity to race the California half-mile as well.

Lastly, the addition of the Las Vegas Bullring could potentially allow for a collaboration with NASCAR’s spring weekend at Las Vegas early in the season, providing a chance for some of the nation’s biggest stars to jump in a late model and race while also meaning that the series could potentially gain more publicity from being joined up with NASCAR.

The Southeast

The series could then take some weeks off and travel home before starting up the second portion of the schedule in the Southeast region of the country during late spring.

This would provide many of the regulars in the Southeast a chance to stay close to home while also visiting some of the best short tracks in the country. All across Florida, the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee and more are some of the most competitive late model tracks in the country, including many of the staple tracks for late model stock racing.

For the four tracks in the Southeast, I would say Five Flags Speedway in Florida, Tri-County Speedway and North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina and Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway in Tennessee would be my picks, although there are plenty of others to choose from.

Five Flags in Pensacola is no stranger to big events. The half-mile track hosts the ASA Stars National Series, the ARCA Menards East Series and of course, the Snowball Derby, one of the most prestigious super late model races in the nation. Five Flags is abrasive and would be a perfect fit for late model stock competition.

As for the two North Carolina tracks, both provide the opportunity for a combo race with the current Late Model Stock schedule, should this hypothetical national series be a separate schedule from the late model stock regional schedule we have now.

The CARS Tour event being jointly with NASCAR at North Wilkesboro draws fans and drivers alike from all over and having the event be part of a national championship would add even more to it.

Likewise, if the Old North State Nationals were to stay at its scheduled spot of Memorial Day weekend at Tri-County, this would provide the opportunity for the CARS Tour’s biggest money race to be part of a national schedule as well.

Lastly, Nashville Fairgrounds has long been one of the most storied short tracks in the Southeast, sitting in downtown Nashville in its current configuration since 1958. The track, like many others on this list, is no stranger to big late model events, hosting the annual North South Challenge and the All-American 400.

The Northeast

The series could then head up to the Northeast in the summer months, where late model stock competition is no pushover to super late models. The Northeast is home to the ACT (American Canadian Tour), another regional late model stock competition, and would provide a chance for the northern teams to have some home-track advantage.

Four tracks I would choose for the northeast are Stafford Speedway and Thompson Speedway in Connecticut, Thunder Road Speedbowl in Vermont and White Mountain Motorsports Park in New Hampshire.

Both Stafford and Thompson are outstanding facilities that put on big events, with Stafford sitting at half a mile and Thompson at .625 miles. Stafford is home to the modified crown jewel Spring Sizzler, while also hosting the ACT as well as the Camping World SRX Series four times in the series’ history. Thompson hosts the NASCAR Whelen Modifieds and the ACT, as well as the Icebreaker for the Pro All Star Series.

Up in Vermont, Thunder Road Speedbowl is one of the most well-known quarter-mile short tracks in America, as well as one of the nicest. The high-banked quarter-mile was founded by Ken Squier and is home to some of the biggest late model stock races in the Northeast.

Along with hosting the ACT series itself, Thunder Road is also home to the Memorial Day and Labor Day Classics, as well as the biggest of them all, The Vermont Milk Bowl.

Finally, White Mountain Motorsports Park is also home to multiple ACT events, as well as their own Late Model Stock track championship. White Mountain typically runs their programs on Saturdays while Thunder Road runs theirs on Thursdays, providing the opportunity for a doubleheader weekend and one less week on the road for the out-of-town teams. Not to mention, the backdrop of the New Hampshire track is beautiful.

The Midwest

In the final section of the schedule, the series would head to the northern part of the Midwest to some of the finest short tracks in America. Although this region of the country is typically considered to be super late model country, not late model stock car country, many of the tracks in the region would put on a show with late model stock cars.

Four that come to mind are Berlin Raceway in Michigan, Slinger Speedway in Wisconsin and both Anderson Speedway and Winchester Speedway in Indiana. All four host big-time late model events and all four are household names in the late model and short track community.

The Battle at Berlin, Slinger Nationals, Redbud 400 (Anderson) and Winchester 400 are some of the biggest races of the year for super late models and always put on great racing, so there’s no reason the late model stock cars couldn’t duplicate that.

Slinger and Anderson are both high-banked, quarter-mile bullrings that put on great nose-to-tail racing, while Winchester is one of the fastest high-banked, half-mile tracks in the country. Throw in Berlin, which comes in as a unique 0.4375-mile oval that is anything but a typical oval with its odd shape and multiple diverse grooves and you have a great four-race stretch of racing.

The Championship

Finally, to finish off the season, the series could head back to the Southeast for one last race. Virginia is considered by many to be the late model stock car capital of the country, home of the Virginia triple crown between Langley, South Boston and Martinsville speedways.

South Boston would be my pick for a CARS National grand finale, as the track has history, puts on great racing and is right in the heart of late model stock country as we know it for the CARS Tour.

Now, for all of this to be worthwhile for the teams, there would have to be a significant increase in purse and with that will have to come publicity and sponsorship, but with the new ownership group of the CARS Tour, who knows what the future holds.

One can only imagine big things with the big names in charge, but time will tell. This is just a glimpse of what a national schedule could look like, not what it will, as it may never happen. For now, we wait on the 2024 schedule and wonder what else the future holds.

That would be a lot of travel expense for all the teams because of limited budgets.

SHAKE IT UP: EXPANDED EDITION

SHAKE IT UP: EXPANDED EDITION features the original album – remastered in 2016 – expanded with rare and unreleased bonus tracks. An illustrated booklet accompanies the music and contains liner notes written by renowned rock journalist David Fricke, who details the history of the album with a new interview by band member, David Robinson. Ric Ocasek, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Benjamin Orr and David Robinson recorded Shake It Up in 1981 at Syncro Sound, the group’s new studio in Boston, with producer Roy Thomas Baker. Working in their own space afforded them the time to perfect the sound of the album, which became their third-straight Top Ten hit and sold more than two million copies. It features the unforgettable singles “Since You’re Gone,” “Think It Over” and The Cars’ single, “Shake It Up.” Several unreleased tracks make their debut on SHAKE IT UP: EXPANDED EDITION, including an early version of “Since You’re Gone,” the demo for “Shake It Up” and an unreleased song called “Midnight Dancer.”

HEARTBEAT CITY: EXPANEDED EDITION

HEARTBEAT CITY: EXPANDED EDITION features the original album – remastered in 2016 – expanded with rare and unreleased bonus tracks. An illustrated booklet accompanies the music and contains liner notes written by renowned rock journalist David Fricke, who details the history of the album with a new interview by band member, Ric Ocasek. Available on CD, 2LP, and digitally on March, 30, pre-order your copy now.

In 1984, the band returned with Heartbeat City, an album produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who’d worked previously with AC/DC, Foreigner and Def Leppard. The album, which peaked at #3 on the charts, went on to sell four million copies, making it the band’s fifth consecutive platinum album. An amazing success, the album launched five tracks that reached the Top 40, including the Top Ten hits “Drive” and “You Might Think.” Videos for the songs received heavy airplay on MTV, including “Hello Again,” which was directed by Andy Warhol, and “You Might Think,” which won the inaugural MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year in 1984. Among the seven bonus tracks included on HEARTBEAT CITY: EXPANDED EDITION are unreleased versions of “Why Can’t I Have You” and “I Refuse,” as well as the demo for “Drive.”

CANDY-O: EXPANDED EDITION

CANDY-O: EXPANDED EDITION, available now, goes beyond the original album’s 11 tracks with seven bonus tracks. Among the highlights are unreleased alternate mixes of “Let’s Go” and “Lust For Kicks,” as well as the previously unissued song, “They Won’t See You (The Northern Studios Version).” Digital remastering was supervised by Ric Ocasek and the album’s liner notes were written by David Wild, including a new interview with guitarist Elliot Easton. Presented in gatefold sleeves, the vinyl version includes music on three sides with an etching on the fourth.

The Cars teamed up once again with producer Roy Thomas Baker (Queen) to record CANDY-O. The album was released in the summer of 1979 and became a huge hit, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Album Chart and eventually earned quadruple-platinum certification in the U.S. alone. One of the singles, “Let’s Go,” was the band’s first Top 15 hit on the Billboard singles chart.

PANORAMA: EXPANDED EDITION

PANORAMA:EXPANDED EDITION, available now, builds on the original album’s 10 songs with four bonus tracks. They include the B-side “Don’t Go To Pieces,” as well as unreleased songs like “Shooting For You,” and “Be My Baby.” Digital remastering was supervised by Ric Ocasek and the album’s liner notes were written by David Wild, along with reminiscences from keyboardist Greg Hawkes. Presented in gatefold sleeves, the vinyl version includes music on three sides with an etching on the fourth.

The Cars returned in the summer of 1980 with PANORAMA, which became the band’s third consecutive platinum album and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Album Chart. The album became a fan favorite thanks to songs like “Touch And Go,” “Up And Down,” and “Gimme Some Slack.”

The Elektra Years 1978-1987

THE ELEKTRA YEARS 1978-1987 includes six studio albums, each one presented in a replica sleeve with original artwork. Ric Ocasek oversaw digital remastering for the set, while drummer David Robinson – who helped create The Cars’ iconic album covers through the years – served as art director. The six-disc collection is available now on CD and digitally. On Tuesday June 7, a limited edition vinyl version of the boxed set will be available with each 180-gram LP pressed on a different color vinyl. On Monday afternoon, zMAX CARS Tour officials unveiled their 19-race schedule for the 2024 season, which will kick off at Southern National Motorsports Park in March, and end at the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway in mid-October.

“There is a lot to unpack and a lot to be excited about this season – two trips to North Wilkesboro and adding Orange County to the schedule,” said CARS Tour co-owner, Dale Earnhardt Jr. “It’s going to be tough competition for the drivers and a great show for our fans in the stands, and for those watching on FloRacing. Our partnership with FloRacing has helped tremendously in building exposure and excitement around the zMAX CARS Tour. I’m looking forward to that continuing.”

CARS Tour Announces New Title Sponsor

As Earnhardt Jr. eluded to, the CARS Tour will visit the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway twice in 2024, first in mid-May, and again in mid-October. The Pro Late Model division will kick off NASCAR’s All-Star week on Tuesday, May 14, and the Late Model Stock Cars will headline racing action on Wednesday, May 15.

The zMAX CARS Tour will return to North Wilkesboro on Saturday, October 19 for the season finale where the champions for both divisions will be crowned.

The zMAX CARS Tour will also return to Rougemont, North Carolina’s Orange County Speedway on Saturday, April 20 following a year away from the schedule. Orange County Speedway had been on the calendar every year since the CARS Tour’s inception in 2015 until 2020. It returned to the calendar in 2021 as the host of that year’s Old North State Nationals, which was won by Josh Berry.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
