This comprehensive guide to the World Padel Tour explains everything you need to know about the competition. Join us to learn what it is, how it works, and how you can watch it!
What is the World Padel Tour?
The World Padel Tour is a professional padel competition that the International Padel Federation organizes. The WPT is a circuit of international tournaments for both women and men.
It gathers the world’s best padel players and has its headquarters in Spain, where 12 of the 16 events in the calendar of 2021 will take place.
What sport is World Padel Tour?
The sport played on WPT is padel, which is sometimes called padel tennis. Padel is a racquet sport. The sport differs from paddle tennis, which is common in the United States and Canada. On an enclosed court about 25% smaller than a tennis court, you play padel in doubles.
Check out our padel guide if you want to learn more about the sport.
World Padel Tour (WPT) started in 2012 after two years of intensive work. Padel Pro Tour (PPT), the first international competition for professional Padel tournaments, was to be replaced by a new circuit.
Over the past ten years, padel has exploded in Spain, and each event has drawn at least 20 thousand fans in stadiums with a capacity of over 5 thousand spectators.
This number is ever-increasing, as the Estrella Damm Master Finals 2017, with 25 thousand spectators during the five-day competition, was the biggest tournament in the sport’s history.
In terms of popularity, padel finished third in Spain’s top sports list, after football and basketball, and before the more traditional sports of handball and futsal.
International Padel Federation
Founded in 1991, the International Padel Federation (FIP) is the world governing body for the sport. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting all forms of Padel around the world.
The World Padel Tour (WPT) is the official international professional circuit recognized by FIP. It gives the WPT federated standing for its tournaments and the organization is responsible for the global ranking list.
The WPT circuit
As the international popularity of padel grows, so does the professional padel circuit worldwide. The best players are now traveling the world to compete in the padel world tour.
The padel WPT has been played in Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and Brazil. However, as we can see from the World Padel Tour schedule 2021 , an increasing number of countries other than Spain and South America will be participating.
On the circuit, recent tournaments have was held in Sweden, the UK, France, Belgium, and Dubai. In 2017, the professional tour visited Miami, Florida, for its first time in the USA.
The 2021 World Padel Tour calendar includes 26 official competitions in six countries, making it the most extensive season in the professional circuit’s history.
Tournaments
Between 18 and 26 WPT tournaments are held annually, plus a final where the top-ranked pairs compete. The participating players travel to different cities around the world to collect points and qualify for the final tournament, where the top eight ranked pairs compete after the season has concluded.
The padel WPT features both men and women. However, the number of women’s WPT championships has traditionally been about half that of men’s, debated.
Six types of tournaments
World Padel Tour 2021 is hosting six levels of tournaments. From the FIP tournaments, each successive level has higher ranking points and prize money.
The first tiers have a lower entry-level, which is a good way for lower-ranked players to earn points.
Tournaments FIP
Master final, exhibition tournaments.
As part of the branding and reaching out to the world, the WPT organizes exhibition tournaments.
Knokke, a municipality in the Flanders region in Belgium, hosted the first exhibition of the 2021 season in august. It was possible to see some of the top padel players in the world, including Paquito Navarro, Martín Di Nenno, Fede Chingotto, Juan Tello, Las Martas, Paula Josemaría and Ari Sánchez.
They also arranged matches between the WPT players and other Belgians, tests, and shows.
The International Padel Federation and the World Padel Tour have taken an important step toward globalizing the competitive structures of padel.
They added FIP GOLD and agreed to loosen ranking restrictions, allowing more players to participate in the competition to offer a more ambitious competition offering that will enable players to earn more points and increase their revenues.
They have decided to change the Challenger tournaments to improve the competition. As a result, for the first time in WPT history, the six events of the 2021 calendar will be played in both categories: men and women.
As a result of the redesigned Challengers, young players will earn more points, increase income, and gain visibility.
With 14 tournaments scheduled for 2021, the World Padel Tour Open is the most common type. Ten Open tournaments are held in Spain, while the other four take place in Sweden, Mexico, and Italy.
In 2021, there will be five WPT Masters tournaments. There are three in the Spanish cities of Marbella, Barcelona, and Valladolid. The other two WPT Masters take place in Cascais and Buenos Aires.
WPT Master Final is the last event of the season, and it is a special event. Its format and the fact that it brings together the best 16 male and 12 female players of the season make it unique.
Following the draw of pairings, two groups, A and B, will be formed by four male and three female pairings. Everyone will face everyone in groups.
The men’s and women’s top two pairings from each group will take each other on in the semifinals after three rounds. First from Group A vs. Second from Group B and First from Group B vs. Second from Group A.
Four days of world-class padel and 24 matches later, we’ll find out who are the year-end masters.
World Padel Tour ranking
The WPT ranking consists of the top world padel tour players. Since the pairings change during a season, doubles partners on the World Padel Tour ranking list don’t usually have the same points.
Players earn ranking points through their performance at tournaments on the WPT. Rankings are updated each week.

How much does a padel player earn?
Are you curious about the World Padel Tour Prize Money 2021? One of the most frequently asked questions among padel fans is how much money a professional player can earn competing on the professional circuit.
In terms of prizes, the financial retributions differ depending on the type of competition included in the official calendar, i.e., Master, Open, and Challenger.
A player can earn anything from 131€ in a round of 16 Challenger to 10.584€ for winning a Master.
However, you should note that the above figures only take into account the prizes derived from participation in the circuit, without considering what the players get from the sponsors and the expenses involved in having a team of professionals around (coaches, psychologists, nutritionists, etc.).
International wildcards
To compete in a professional and high-level Padel tournament, players must meet specific requirements. To be eligible for a spot in an official event, you must appear in the rankings. There is also an alternative for those who do not meet the qualifying requirements. Padel players may qualify for WPT padel events through a system called “Wildcard.”
A variety of padel tournaments take place outside of the World Padel Tour competitions throughout the year. Wildcards get awarded at certain WPT events from these tournaments. Additionally, independent padel federations grant Wildcards to their best players.
As a result, players from other parts of the world seeking their first official points and participating in the top padel circuit now have more options.
How to watch World Padel Tour
There is a growing interest in padel tennis, and the World Padel Tour YouTube channel has over half a million subscribers.

Who owns the World Padel Tour?
World Padel Tour is owned by SETPOINT EVENTS S.A., a subsidiary of S.A. DAMM, which guarantees the quality parameters of the circuit and the prizes for professional padel players who participate in the tournaments.
What is the difference between World Padel Tour and Padel World Championships?
While the World Padel Tour is a year-round series of tournaments, the Padel World Championship has been an international padel competition held every three years since 1992.
What is the World Paddle Tour?
The correct name is World Padel Tour, and it is a professional padel circuit. The company gathers the best players from all over the world and has its headquarters in Spain, where many of its events are held.

What Is The World Padel Tour?
Padel, I discovered, was one of the most “federated” sports I had encountered in the world. I was curious to find out how World Padel Tour managed to find and establish itself as a major player in this highly regulated sport fraught with “federated” red tape on an international platform.
What is the World Padel Tour? The World Padel Tour (WPT) is the international circuit for professional padel tournaments for both women and men. The World Padel Tour covers all the professional events for the International Padel Federation, except for the Padel World Championships and Continental Championships.
The World Padel Tour (WPT) was founded in 2012. It was a relatively easy entry into what was then an already established, but disjointed circuit of international tournaments hosted by many the Padel Federations as well as the Padel Pro Tour (PPT). The latter being the first international circuit for professional Padel tournaments.
However, World Padel Tour’s arrival on the world tour circuit was not without some controversy. Join me in looking at all of this in greater detail.
A Unified Umbrella for Professional Padel
By the time Word Padel Tour (WPT) made an official entry on the world circuit in 2012, Padel was booming. Many padel federations had already been established in Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay, Paraguay, United States, Canada, and Brazil.
The sport was fast expanding to other countries with the first European federations formed in the ’90s in Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, and Austria.
After having been given the green light by the International Padel Federation, the first World Padel Tour (WPT) started in 2013, which would go on to become the main tour for professional Padel Tournaments. Since then, World Padel Tour has grown to a total of 560 men and 317 women professional players worldwide.
Today, the WPT is the organizing body and brand for top tier professional tournaments around the world. The WPT also houses the official ranking list of professional padel players.
The Padel Pro Tour (PPT) Controversy
In 2012, The World Padel Tour (WPT) had put into place all the necessary requirements to enter the international circuit, including the signing of the 100 best Padel players in the world. But not everybody welcomed this move.
The Padel Pro Tour (PPT), at the time, was ruling the roost. The PPT, founded in 2005, was the dominant player in the field, the first professional paddle tour circuit.
By the time The World Padel Tour (WPT) registered with the International Padel Federation in 2012, the Padel Pro Tour had made its mark on the international circuit and had become the firm favorite with professional players. Soon, the best players in the world joined and played The Padel Pro Tour tournaments in Spain and Argentina.
When the World Padel Tour arrived on the scene it was regarded as “stepping on their turf” kind of thing by the Padel Pro Tour organization, especially when many top players started signing with the World Padel Tour. Padel Pro Tour then, as a preemptive measure, filed a lawsuit to try and stop the first WPT tournament from happening as scheduled in April 2013.
In their affidavit, Padel Pro Tour asked the Court to suspend the WPT. On April 15, 2013, the Madrid Lower Court denied the application because Padel Pro Tour failed to supply evidence to back up their claim. The Lower Court ruling spelled the end of the Padel Pro Tour and at the same time signaled the birth of World Padel Tour WPT).
One of the key innovations that the World Padel Tour brought has been the free worldwide live streaming of WPT tournaments as a way to promote the sport to a global audience. Currently, the live stream is only available with Spanish commentary, but that will change as the padel becomes more popular in English speaking countries.
International Padel Federation (IPF) Approved
From personal experience, one of the first things I learned about doing business in Spain, was that there are many rules. Rules to be adhered to as stipulated by the many levels of governance and ruling bodies.
It’s no different when it comes to sporting events. Everything needs to be “federated.” On national as well regional level. You want to put on an “ Espectacular Publico ” (public event), permissions need to be requested and obtained and don’t you dare try to be smartass and do it your way. You’re bound to hit a brick wall. Seems like the WPT managed to get it right.
The International Padel Federation (IPF), the governing body of Padel, recognizes The World Padel Tour (WPT) as the official professional circuit worldwide. This gives the WPT the “federated” standing, not only for the tournaments but also as the body responsible for the international ranking list.
The Difference between WPT and Padel World Championships (PWC)
Unlike the World Padel Tour that is a year-round series of events, Padel World Championship is a single international padel competition held every three years since 1992. The first competition was held in Spain. The event is organized by the International Padel Federation and has both male and female competitions .
The World Padel Tour Circuit
Historically, the World Padel Tour has been played in Spain, Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. However, of late, many more countries outside of Spain and South America have joined in the fray.
In recent years, France, Sweden, England, Belgium as well as Dubai have hosted tournaments on the circuit. In 2017 the World Padel Tour visited Miami, Florida for the first touch on US soil. Hopefully, the USA will soon become a permanent fixture on the World Padel Tour.
The World Padel Tour Tournaments
The World Padel Tournament has four tiers of tournaments.
- Master Final
Starting at the Challenger, each subsequent tier has higher ranking points and prize money. I.e. the Challenger Tournaments has a lower entry-level. It’s a good way for lower-ranked players to earn points as a way of moving up the ranks. I cover this in more detail in my article on how World Padel Tour rankings are calculated. Click here to read that article .
The WPT Rankings
The WPT ranking is based on the performance of double’s pairings in tournaments and gets updated weekly every Tuesday.
The pairings of the players may change during a season for a number of possible reasons. The most common of these is if one of the players gets a serious season-ending injury. That is why more often than not doubles partners on the World Padel Tour ranking list seldom have the same ranking. For more information, read my article about how the WPT rankings are calculated .
Anti-Doping
World Padel Tour (WPT) is registered with the World Anti-doping Association (WADA). This is part of the checks and balances needed for Padel to become an official Olympic sport. To find out more, here is my article about how padel got classified as a sport and what is needed to become an Olympic sport .
I've been playing padel since 2015, although I first saw a padel court when I visited Spain in 2008. Living inland from the Costa Del Sol means playing padel all year round.
One thought on “ What Is The World Padel Tour? ”
I really enjoy your web site and I have shared it with our players here in Austin Texas. Lake Travis Padel was established last July 2020 and we are excited to be a part of the padel movement here in the USA. I am Canadian and will be investing in padel in Canada in the next couple of years as well.
If there is anything that I can do to help contribute to this amazing sport please know that I am available. I would love to figure out how I can become a part of the “marketing” of padel merchandising line as I would love to bring in WPT etc… to the USA and Canada. I currently purchase BullPadel gear direct in small quantities which is not effective. Any thoughts in helping me build the padel brand in Texas / USA would be amazing. Thanks. BREAKING: Historic agreement between Premier Padel and World Padel Tour
It has been officially announced that Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and Damm have reached a historic agreement, resulting in the unification of Premier Padel and WPT starting from 2024.
Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), owner of the Premier Padel ciurcuit, and Damm, the owner of Setpoint Events and the organizing company behind the World Padel Tour (WPT), have come to a historic agreement for the acquisition of WPT by QSI.
Following this agreement, Premier Padel and WPT will merge into a single global professional padel circuit, retaining the name Premier Padel, and will be governed by the International Padel Federation.
Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, President of Qatar Sports Investments and Premier Padel, stated: "This is a historic moment for the sport of padel, witnessing the two premier professional padel circuits finally unified into a single global circuit, Premier Padel, starting next year. We are very excited about this new chapter."
Ten years of World Padel Tour
The agreement is the culmination of months of negotiations between the parties and will involve QSI acquiring the business assets of WPT. Additionally, the agreement will also resolve pending disputes between the parties, including those involving QSI, the FIP, and professional padel players who have competed in both circuits.
"World Padel Tour is now entering a new phase led by QSI, which will contribute to accelerating the international growth of the circuit. For Damm, it is a source of pride to have contributed to the development of professional padel, making World Padel Tour a global benchmark," stated Demetrio Carceller Arce, CEO of Damm.
Meanwhile, the President of the International Padel Federation, Luigi Carraro, said: "As the governing body of padel worldwide, we are thrilled to see the merger of two great tours into a fantastic global circuit. The International Padel Federation acknowledges Damm for its significant contribution to the sport of padel through the World Padel Tour since its inception in 2013."
Throughout the remainder of the year 2023, the WPT and Premier Padel circuits will continue to operate separately as planned, while efforts are made to unify the competitions for the upcoming year, forming a single global circuit, Premier Padel, starting from 2024.

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
