haida gwaii guided kayak tours

Happy Anniversary! In 2024, we will be celebrating our 35th season of exploring Haida Gwaii.

We guarantee that you will escape the everyday and enjoy some of the most exciting kayaking in Gwaii Haanas, with over three decades of experience to draw from. Our tour is designed with you in mind. It is perfect for families, beginner kayakers, or the all-out adventurer, as the itinerary is adaptable to each group’s goals and objectives, while offering a variety of kayak routes to choose from.

To start your trip off right, we will take you on a tour of the Haida Totems at K’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans), an abandoned village that tells stories of the ancient past through its standing poles and multiple house pits. After a day of kayaking, you can enjoy a relaxing soak in the natural thermals of Gandll K’in Gwaay, yaay (Hot Springs islands) or walk amongst the giants at Hik’yah GaawGa (Windy Bay), where one of the largest Sitka Spruce trees is found. This location is also where the stand-off between the Haida, local residents, and environmentalists with the forestry industry took place, leading to the creation of Gwaii Haanas.

Our area boasts some of the best nutrient-rich waters and sea life in Gwaii Haanas. It is home to Gwaii Haanas National Park’s second Marine Ecological Reserve.  You may even spot humpback whales and the occasional pod of transient killer whales in the surrounding waters of Juan Perez Sound.

This 6 Day Haida Gwaii Tour is guaranteed to satisfy your desire to get away from it all and experience the best of Haida Gwaii.

Reviewing the Tour Map allows guests the opportunity to get familiar with the highlights, wildlife, and geographical locations of the tour. The goals of our Haida Gwaii kayak trips are to be fun, engaging, educational, and relaxing.

haida gwaii guided kayak tours

Below is an itinerary, created from over two decades of travel thru Gwaii Haanas, that guests have enjoyed. That said, it is your tour, and you may have your own personal bucket list to check off, so OSK will try to facilitate any deviations from the below schedule.

One of the greatest features of this tour is flexibility.  Ultimately tides, weather, the general interests of the group, along with the guides, will set the agenda.  This is a self-supported kayak tour, which uses a mixed fleet of kayaks for your convenience, confidence and enjoyment.

Ocean Sound Kayaking, Co.

Designed to be educational, fun, and relaxing, your vacation will begin from Sandspit, BC, the location of the island’s airport. Our friends from Moresby Explorers will pick you up from your accommodations in Sandspit at 7:30 a.m.  They will transport you to Moresby Camp, where you will have short zodiac ride to K’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans), located on the Eastern shores of Louise Island .

The Village of Skedans is one of the highlights to this tour.  The Haida name for this village is K’uuna Llnagaay , which means Grizzly Bear Town.  Abandoned well over a century ago, the remaining standing totem poles tell the stories of past ancestors .   Though the site is outside Gwaii Haanas, it is co-managed by Parks Canada and Haida Heritage Sites.

From a remote camp in Gwaii Haanas, a trip to Gandll K’in Gwaay, yaay (Hot Springs islands) allows you to rejuvenate in the natural pools.   Composed of many islands and islets, the shoreline offers a new experience every day from Haida cultural sites, seal haul outs, bird colonies (Ancient Murrelet, Blue Heron and Peregrine Falcons), old growth forests, and hopefully a whale or two.

Whether it is playing with a sea star or a nudibranch in a tidal pool close to camp or enjoying the marine ecosystem while paddling along the shore at low tide, you   are guaranteed to enjoy the intertidal life that Haida Gwaii is known for.

This nutrient rich corridor also provides feed for whales such as Minke, Humpback and the occasional pod of Orcas.   Feeding on krill, and small fish, Humpback whales which often visit the area will consume over 1.5 tons of food a day.  While the females are slightly larger than the males (45- 50 feet), these whales are capable of breeching their 40 tons completely out of the water – a sight never to be forgotten!

haida gwaii guided kayak tours

Haida Gwaii is known for BIG trees!  The provincial tree of BC is the western red cedar (Thuja Plicata) and is also known to the northwest natives as the “Tree of Life”.  There will be opportunities to view these giants and reflect on how the resourceful Haida used this tree for housing, canoes, totem poles, and clothing.

Ocean Sound Kayaking, Co.

One of the largest recorded Sitka Spruce trees can be enjoyed at Hik’yah GaawGa (Windy Bay), the stand-off location which led to the creation of the Gwaii Haanas Agreement , and Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site, or as we like to say Gwaii Haanas.

Besides big vistas and amazing sunsets, you can have the opportunity to fish from a kayak.  Yes, fishing is often a highlight to a trip, as you have the chance to provide yourself with a freshly caught meal- something no restaurant can offer.

The afternoon of the final day will be spent travelling back to your accommodations in Sandspit but the adventure does not have to stop there! There could be opportunities, weather dependent, to stop while travelling back to Moresby Camp and visit T’aanuu Llagaay (Tanu) and the resting place of Haida artist Bill Reid .

We look forward to sharing the many cultural treasures and natural wonders with you.

Below is an overview, created from over two decades of travel through Gwaii Haanas, that guests have enjoyed.  Kayaking Gwaii Haanas – Haida Gwaii is a true wilderness and requires a flexible mindset to travel safely in a self-propelled kayak.  The success of the tour depends on the weather, tides, guests’ interests, and the overall ability of the group.  No one person, including guides, has no control over such variables.

The perfect vacation looks different for everyone, so it’s important to ask yourself some initial questions when planning a trip to Haida Gwaii.

  • Reviewing our Trip Planner can help navigate your next steps when preparing for a trip to Haida Gwaii.

Please note that Ocean Sound Kayaking doesn’t accept direct online bookings.

Instead, we prefer to speak to our guest over the phone, when possible, to answer any questions you may have and design the perfect trip for you. This is what sets us apart, the OSK difference.

Connect with us!

haida gwaii guided kayak tours

We have been introducing people of all ages, abilities, from around the world to Haida Gwaii for the past 30 years, and we want to ensure that all our guests have a clear understanding of our trips before we start, so that your expectations are met.

Personal Fitness

First and foremost, it’s important to note that age is just a number to us. We see that you are an adventurous soul who seeks intrinsic wilderness experiences, and that’s exactly what we aim to provide. If you’re in good physical condition and willing to share in occasional camp chores, you’re welcome on our tours.

We travel in a self-propelled mix fleet of single and double sea kayaks, without any support boat on any of our kayak tours. Kayak experience isn’t required, but we ask that guests feel comfortable around water. More important than your paddling skill is your past camping experience, which will assist you greatly in ensuring your comfort in a remote wilderness setting like Haida Gwaii.

Lifting and Carrying

To make any trip successful, all guests must participate in the daily chores and contribute to the overall team environment, such as food cache, meal prep and clean up, setting up camp, collecting firewood, and drinking water. We can accommodate guests with physical limitations in this department, but we expect guests to be able to carry up to 20-30 pounds, as kayaks must be placed above the high tide line nightly in teams of 6-8 people.

There are no outhouse facilities throughout Gwaii Haanas. We use low-impact practices such as the “intertidal flush,” which is a standard set by Parks Canada for all kayakers in Gwaii Haanas. Your guide will brief you on this practice and present a private area for the group washroom at each rest stop and campsite.

Bathing and Water

Many of our chosen camps have a freshwater source to collect water and take a bath. Your guides will create the boundaries along with a private location for guests. The kayak tour can carry 110 liters of water to sites that do not have a suitable or reliable water supply. Non-scented wet wipes are handy items around camp as they are convenient and easy.

OSK Principles

Our goal is to offer a wilderness experience that will remove you from your everyday distractions, replacing cell phones with solitude, and streetlights with stars. Let’s keep the wild, “WILD.” With this in mind, it’s our responsibility to travel through Haida Gwaii with an ethical approach. Haida Gwaii is known as the “Galapagos of the Pacific Northwest” and can offer some incredible wildlife experiences. Your guide will provide you with a trip orientation on day one, a Parks Canada requirement for all Gwaii Haanas guests. The orientation is to offer insight into the Haida Culture, the sensitivity of Ecological Reserves, and to deliver awareness of how our tours will practice industry standards regarding low-impact camping and wildlife encounters.

CENTRAL GWAII HAANAS EXPLORER – EXPEDITION KAYAKING

If your idea of a perfect vacation involves kayaking every day, backcountry camping in lush rainforests, having meals on isolated, pristine beaches, and visiting a scenic, natural hot spring along the way, then there’s no better place to indulge than five dreamy days in Gwaii Haanas.

Haida Gwaii is an ecological marvel; isolated from the mainland by over 100 kilometres of open ocean, this unique area boasts at least 39 unique subspecies of plants and animals. It’s also home to the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site —or, as National Geographic calls it, “the premier wilderness park destination in North America”. It’s a place that has long beckoned adventurous souls with awe-inspiring panoramas, pristine natural landscapes, and immersion into the vibrant Haida culture.

Nestled in the heart of Gwaii Haanas is one of Canada’s most scenic hot springs at G andll K’in Gwaay.yaay, or Hotspring Island. On our Central Gwaii Haanas Explorer kayak tours, we spend five days navigating the gorgeous waters around this island at a leisurely tempo—an ideal introduction to Gwaii Haanas without the extensive time and energy of our longer excursions.

The central sector of Gwaii Haanas offers a huge variety of paddling scenery, from sheltered channels and hidden bays to wide-open crossings and exposed coastlines.

Despite its laid-back pace, don’t be fooled into thinking this tour skimps on kayaking! Instead, this tour allows you to indulge your curiosity—delving deeper into the nooks and crannies of bays and channels and exploring the coastline and all its various wildlife.

Our itinerary typically includes camping at three distinct sites, offering the option of exploring over a hundred kilometres of coastline and islands along our winding route. The tour’s highlights include the rejuvenating natural pools at G andll K’in Gwaay.yaay (Hotspring Island) and paddling through the wildlife-abundant waters of Juan Perez Sound. Time permitting, we may have the opportunity to explore the ancient Haida village site of K ‘uuna Llnagaay (Skedans), with its impressive house remains and solemn standing poles, on our zodiac boat journey in or out of Gwaii Haanas.

Quiet, leisurely paddling along the shores has other advantages: careful eyes may spot sightings of Sitka black-tail deer, Haida Gwaii black bears, and pine martens. Juan Perez Sound can be a haven for humpback whales, and with over 750,000 nesting seabirds and an unparalleled density of bald eagle nests, Gwaii Haanas is a birder’s paradise.

To round off your journey, we’ve joined forces with the illustrious Raincoast Breads in K’il Kun (Sandspit) for a memorable, grand finale dinner. Raincoast Breads is the first restaurant in Canada authorized to forage wild ingredients, and they bring it all together in an extraordinary, hyper-local, and seasonal tasting menu that melds the flavours of the forest with the bounty of the sea. It’s the perfect way to end any vacation! This dining experience is included in all of our Gwaii Haanas Explorer kayak tours—it’s a core part of the Kingfisher difference!

We know organizing expeditions in remote locations can present its own logistical challenges—but that’s where we step in! With each of Kingfisher’s Gwaii Haanas Explorer tours, you can expect:

  • Convenient booking for accommodation before and after your tour *
  • A smooth start—meet one of your guides in Sandspit the evening before departure for an orientation and handing out gear
  • A fully equipped tour: we provide tents, sleeping pads and bags, drybags, splash-proof paddling jackets, and all other essential kayaking, camping, and safety gear
  • A fully catered menu and plenty of snacks— contact us here  to discuss how we can meet your dietary needs!
  • Smaller group sizes: at most, our groups consist of eight guests and two guides for a smoother, more intimate experience
  • End your tour with an unforgettable meal at  Raincoast Breads , the first restaurant in Canada permitted to forage wild ingredients. Their seasonal, hyper-local menus offer an unprecedented connection with the landscape through your taste buds!

A Kingfisher tour is an all-inclusive experience—all you need to bring is your personal clothing, toiletries, and a smile! A  guest information page  is provided with a guest handbook, that includes a list of suitable clothing and other items, plus videos on how to pack, waivers, and participant detail forms.

*Understanding that accommodation options in Sandspit are limited, we’ve reserved a number of rooms at the Seaport B&B for the night before and after your tour. These rooms can be conveniently booked through Kingfisher at the time of your kayak tour reservation for a seamless travel experience from start to finish.

This tour is suitable for a wide range of abilities. Previous kayaking and backcountry camping experience is beneficial. A certain level of physical fitness and mobility is required as well as the ability to enjoy what can sometimes be less than ideal conditions, like wind and rain. Below is a bit of what you can expect on this tour.

  • Expect a 2-4 hr open Zodiac water taxi transit at beginning and end of tour.
  • Paddle a fully loaded single and/or double kayak for 4-6 hours per day for multiple days.
  • Expect to spend time in a double kayak during your tour. With advance notice we can often accommodate guests who want to spend their entire trip in a double kayak but we cannot accommodate guests who want to spend their entire trip in a single kayak.
  • Paddle into wind (up to 20 knots) and waves up to 1 meter ( 3 feet)
  • Climb on and off our zodiac water taxi to the beach at the beginning and end of the trip.
  • Assist with loading and offloading of gear and supplies from water taxi.

If you have physical limitations that may make this difficult contact our office before booking to ensure this can be accommodated.

  • Beaches vary from sand, to pebble, to small boulders, to jagged rocks. At low tide, beaches can be covered in slippery seaweed. The upper reaches of the beach are often covered in logs and seaweed Some beaches may require landing through small surf. This is often the most physically demanding part of the trip.
  • Back-country camp for four consecutive nights
  • Break-down, move, and set-up camp for a minimum of 2 of the 4 nights.
  • Carry heavy kayaks and gear up and down the beach (this is often the most physically demanding part of the trip)

If you have physical limitations that may make this difficult contact our office before booking to ensure this can be accommodated.

  • Use the inter-tidal area for low-impact toilet use. This is a wilderness area and there are no facilities, including outhouses in the areas we visit.
  • Recognize that wildlife does not operate on our schedules. Our guides are very knowledgeable and attempt to provide as many wildlife viewings as possible. However, there are no guarantees when it comes to viewing specific species.
  • Stay upbeat and positive in various conditions. We are in a rainforest and we may encounter all kinds of weather imaginable.

Recognize that there are certain realities in joining a public tour.  The abilities of other tour participants may not be the same as yours. You may need to push yourself outside your comfort zone or need to scale back your expectations so the group can function in a productive manner

Even with little or no kayaking experience, you can join our Base Camp tours. Our Vancouver Island Explorer tours are suitable for beginners with a sense of adventure.

Due to the length of our Haida Gwaii tours and their remote location they are also best suited to people with some previous kayaking experience.

Our Great Bear Rainforest expedition is designed for kayakers with a moderate amount of previous kayaking experience and is our most challenging trip.

While whales are often viewed on all of our kayak tours, the Base Camp and Whales and Wildlife Explorer kayak tours have by far the most reliable sightings of both orcas and humpback whales.

Please keep in mind that while these tours offer great viewing opportunities we are still dealing with wildlife and we cannot guarantee any particular sightings.

The northern resident (fish-eating) orcas are most reliably seen around northern Vancouver Island from mid-July through September. They may be seen in June and early July, along with the transient (mammal-eating) orcas, however, sightings become more consistent later in the summer. As they are wild, we cannot guarantee any particular sightings.

There is a lot of different wildlife along the British Columbia coast year round. However, we find that the greatest and most diverse wildlife is often found off northern Vancouver Island from mid-August through September.

The Base Camps feature roomy canvas tents raised off the ground on wooden platforms, are situated throughout the forest with views of the ocean. The tents provide ample room and are outfitted with wooden beds with the thickest and widest Therm-a-rest mattresses available. Sheets, fleece blankets, full-size pillows, warm barrel-style sleeping bags, and hot water bottles are all provided. A recharging station for digital cameras, an extensive library of natural history books, a safari style bucket shower, and a large covered kitchen and dining area made from locally milled red cedar make for a very comfortable camping experience.

For our base camp tours, the camps have two out-houses made from locally milled cedar. The outhouses incorporate a holding tank and cedar sawdust to cover the waste. The tank is replaced every few days. Guests often comment on the cleanliness of our system. We pack out all holding tanks to be properly disposed of at a sewage disposal station. When away from camp during the day we use the inter-tidal area for low impact toilet use.

We pride ourselves on small group sizes, allowing close personal attention and minimal impact on the environment and the wildlife we view from our kayaks. Our base camp tours have a maximum of ten guests and three guides, while our explorer tours have a maximum of eight guests with two guides.

In addition to minimizing our impact on the land we find the smaller group size allows us to better manage our groups around wildlife giving us better viewing opportunities.

You’ll spend a full six days travelling in one direction only through Gwaii Haanas National Park & Haida Heritage Site, either southbound from Cumshewa Inlet to SGaang Gwaay or northbound from SGaang Gwaay to Cumshewa Inlet. Each trip will either begin or end with a spectacular seaplane flight over Gwaii Haanas from Queen Charlotte City to (or from) the M.V. Island Bay.

Why choose a one direction only “Fly In / Out” Mothership Kayaking trip?

  • You’ll spend more of your valuable trip time paddling, hiking and exploring.
  • You’ll enjoy calm waters and a higher safety margin.
  • Travelling in one direction only means less distance to travel which means greater flexibility for choosing optimal sea conditions.
  • Spend more time in the remote, rugged and spectacular southern portion of Gwaii Haanas
  • Enjoy a great “flight–seeing” experience through the beautiful southern Charlottes.

This Includes: Meals, a "night on the town" at Chez Susan’s in Rose Harbour, use of the kayaks and a spectacular seaplane flight over Gwaii Haanas while travelling to or from the vessel. (See Tour Prices for details and conditions)

Haida Gwaii from space

The Haida people have flourished on these islands known as Haida Gwaii - "Islands of the People", for 10,000 years. An amenable climate and rich natural resources allowed them to develop a complex and creative culture in harmony with their environment. You will get to know the Haida Gwaii Watchmen - guardians and hosts at several long abandoned but still vibrant Haida villages, including the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nans Dins village on SGaang Gwaii (Anthony Island).

From Our Guest Log:

Thanks to all the kind and generous people that I’ve so liberally quoted. And thanks, of course, to all of our guests over the past few years. You were all wonderful shipmates and gave more than you got in terms of sharing your own knowledge and understandings of the mysterious workings of the world.

2019 Many thanks, our trip with you was spectacular!  Beginning with the beautiful float plane ride over the islands to Rose Harbour, to the incredible whale and dolphin shows, to the great fishing, prawning, crab trapping, to the serene kayaking, to the old Haida village sites and watchmen, to the delicious food and excellent company.  We could not ask for anything better!          Ron and Sandra, Richmond B.C.

2018 Trip of a lifetime!  Thank you Archipelago Ventures for providing day after day of magical, unforgettable, most amazing experiences.          Melissa, Victoria BC

2017 I wish I’d done this trip sooner so I could remember it for longer.          Horst, Ottawa

July 16 – 22nd, 2013 We have had a wonderful six days in this beautiful place. All aspects of the trip were marvelous - the crew, Barrett, Ryan, the food, the kayaking and wildlife sightings were a amazing. I was very impressed at the patience and enthusiasm that Barrett and Ryan displayed and their knowledge of so many things - the history and sea-life especially. Being on a boat with four strangers was a completely new experience for us and it was made enjoyable by the crew. Thank you for making this experience memorable for us. All the best for the remainder of this year trips.          Paige and Kevin

Awesome trip guys! So much to explore, so much to do. We barely put a dent on the islands and had six full days of fun. I will be back. Thanks to Barrett and Ryan          Dana

Exploration every day was terrific - new sites, new sounds, great company. The calm waters at night were amazing on the ocean. Thank you for sharing some of your special spots.          Julie

July 22 - 27th, 2013 Coho, ling cod, snapper, halibut, prawns. Sea lions, humpbacks, bears and millions of sea stars. Puffins! Culture and good friends! And not to forget the amazing hidden forest walk. Thank you for an amazing time.          Ande

All best wishes to our superb captain, Barrett and his trusty assistant Ryan, who made this week as wonderful as it could ever be - utterly unforgettable. Warmly,          Mary

A fine boat, good people, excellent food, and a spectacular place. Thanks especially for providing an entry pass to several of the many cultural layers in these islands. So long and thank you for all the fish.          Kelly

July 28 - August 2nd, 2013 Many thanks to Barrett and in Ainsley for a great week in Haida Gwaii. Not only did you run a tight ship, safe and efficient, but you also took care of and entertained our three sometimes needy kiddos. You  launched us on great kayak outings, took us on great hikes, swam with us, got a few hundred prawns and more halibut than we are quite willing to admit. You are born great guides and we are lucky to have had you with us.          Scott

Memories for a lifetime! Thanks for making this trip possible and for sharing your love of Haida Gwaii. We will treasure these memories and share them as part of our oral history in good Haida style.          Michelle

Barrett, thank you for the friendship and all that you taught us. I learned a lot just watching. Ainsley, thank you for joining us and for sharing all of your knowledge of the area. All the best to you both.          Andy

Aug 3 – 9th, 2013 Thank you so much Barrett and Ainsley for satiating our senses to the max in body, mind and spirit.  We have a far better sense and respect for the ways of the Haida and all that surrounds them - “Awsome” as Christian and Duck Soup say!  Your culinary skills are outstanding, especially the fish and the desserts.  Great energy of camaraderie; like one long big hug. Love this group of people and you. Be well on your future endeavors. Hugs.          Deb and Joe

Great company; great scenery; great food, paddling and fishing.  A privilege to get to know this place and this crew!  Thank you for your caring, attention and showing us how to relax.           Franke and Dieter

An experience of a lifetime shared by a great group (who will likely remain good friends), and of course our courageous crew – calm and cool at all times.  We had an adventure.  It couldn’t have been better.          Geoff

So many thank-you’s to be said – there are hardly words for them all.  Thank you for all of your good work, terrific skills, and gracious generosity.  This trip was “awesome” as Duck would say.  You gifted us with a set of memories that will be indelibly etched in my minds eye.  Nothing could have been better than the adventure we had here in Gwaii Haanas.           Lynne

August 9 -14th, 2013 What an ideal way to get introduced to the country – on a working boat, in great weather, with guides who have an amazing amount of local knowledge.  Thanks to Rob and Lexy for a great time.           Duncan

Still waiting for the “down hill”!  This has been a truly awesome experience.  Thanks Rob and Lexi for all you did to make the trip so memorable.           Emily

Haida carvers, Haida culture, paddling, birds, whales, paddling, sea lions, sea urchins, seaweed, paddling, sea-everything, oh yeah, and bush whacking.  Thanks for showing us such a diverse and stunning part of Haida Gwaii.  I enjoyed learning about jigging, trolling, and crabbing too, not to mention eating, oh yeah, and paddling!!!  Thanks Rob and Lexi for being special.          Cheryl

August 15 - 21st, 2013 An experience of a lifetime!  Thank you for sharing your knowledge of this diverse paradise.  Words cannot describe the joy of each day and adventures – paddling, fishing, eating, paddling, fishing, eating.  The visits to your hidden gems were so appreciated, as well as the visits to the cultural sites and the stories given by the watchmen.  I loved the wind, the rain, and the thunder and lightning (even if I didn’t sleep).  We will treasure these memories forever.           Chris and Dale

Thank you for the opportunity to experience Haida Gwaii to the fullest.  We enjoyed all it had to offer – rain, rain, thunder, lightning, wind, calm and of course sun!  I think that pretty much covers the weather!  The meals were fabulous Lexi, as well all of your expertise, knowledge and hospitality.  I am very grateful we were able to experience this trip with you both.           John and Lesley

It has been a dream to return to Haida Gwaii and experience “the south island.”  We have loved our experience, the amazing kayaking, the scenery, the wonderful Lexi and her absolutely delicious cooking, and the experience of all weather patterns.  The wildlife has been so exciting and the wonderful heritage of the villages at rest – it is a pristine and special part of the world to be treasured by all.          Bruce and Prue

August 22 - 28th Barrett, thank you from the bottom of my heart for making a 17 year old dream come true and getting me to see the poles.  I’ve had a great week here on the Island Bay.  Thank you for (in no particular order) 1) my first fish, 2) my first bear, 3) my first ocean trip without throwing up, 4) yummy food… the plane is here so I’ve gotta go!  It’s been fabulous!           Becky

Island Bay, thank you for being my home for six days.  Barrett – trust you man.  Thanks for being the captain for a trip of a lifetime.          Tony

When Blake and I moved up to Masset for four months, we knew we had to go to Gwaii Haanas.  Thankfully the stars aligned and we had the privilege of spending an amazing week with Barrett on the Island Bay.  Our trip was far beyond what we had imagined.  Gwaii Haanas is truly a magical place and we feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to experience the life of these island.  From breaching whales from a mama bear and her cubs, sea lions and seals coming within arms reach, to swimming alight with bio-luminescence… the list goes on.  Every day was full of surprise and adventure.  We can’t thank you enough Barrett for hosting us.  You are an incredible chef, fisherman extraordinaire (jigging up cod and rock fish before breakfast), and an ever-patient leader.  Thank you for sharing your love and knowledge of this special place with us.  It will be a week that we will be recanting for years to come.  Many thanks.          Celia and Blake

Coming all the way from Munich Germany to make this wonderful trip, was a wonderful and great experience.  Barrett, our captain during the trip, took great care of us and then some.  We have relaxed from the daily grind, to enjoy nature, the sea, wildlife.  Barrett reduced our life to the max!  Thank you so much.          Jana and Kai

September 2 - 7th, 2013 The voyage comes to a close. A week of unexpectedly great weather, blue skys, calm seas: a week of gracious company, confident seamanship and high adventure.  Grateful thank yous to Captain Rob and First Mate Ryan.  Haida Gwaii was everything it was built up to be and much more than the sliver we got to see.  Hope to be back on the sea again.  We’ll try to bring the weather… you bring the boatful of good cheer and further adventures.  Your warmth and energy, patience and shared stories, leave us both looking forward to a second chapter.  Thanks from both of us.           Max and Anne

This week has been one I will never forget.  Day after day it got better and better, from the beautiful weather to the amazing food, stunning sites, and of course the unbeatable company.  Thank you Rob and Ryan for sharing with us such an incredible place.  Your hospitality was incredible.  I am already planning my next trip into the park.  Remember if you ever need an onboard nurse/halibut fisher lady, I am your girl.  Thank you so much, looking forward to seeing you again!           Sarah

This has been a magical week.  My goal was to see the life and history of Gwaii Haanas.  I saw and experienced so very much more.  Thank you to captain Rob for fist, having an honest website and complete instructions to prepare, then – for the most varied and flexible time each day – accommodating all of our wishes and not promising anything!  I enjoyed everything (understatement). A little challenge was good. A lot of viewing and time to just absorb was good too.  Thank you Ryan for awareness, skills in so much, and care.  Kayak coaching was good for me – brought me to a higher level and inspired me to keep learning.  I do appreciate it!  Thank you to the “Island Bay” for being such a comfortable and working boat.  I will miss this boat too.  I cannot think of a better way to experience this area.           Anna Lee

September 8 -13th, 2013 Where to begin? Words cannot express what our experience with you has been… your vast knowledge and willingness to share, your enthusiasm, the organizing of our days for us… meals, visits, paddles, hikes, fishing, etc. and the best food!!!  Thanks Rob and Ryan.          Tineke

Thanks for a great trip. I was happy to bring along a sun for the last week of the season.  Ship and trips are run like a well oiled machine, as are chef Ryan’s meals.  Rob seems to have prepared for every possible mishap. Would love to return one of these days.          Wim

Monica Lewinsky for Reformation, foraged dining in Haida Gwaii and family suites at a Toronto airport hotel

Monica Lewinsky, Gen Z and Zillennial icon?

haida gwaii guided kayak tours

Reformation’s new workwear collection campaign with Monica Lewinsky. Handout

Few in Reformation’s 27- to 32-year-old target demographic would have been tuned in to the news in the late nineties when Monica Lewinsky faced scrutiny for her affair with former president U.S. Bill Clinton when she was a White House intern. But the clothing brand’s new campaign featuring Lewinsky, now 50 and an anti-bullying activist , as the face of their new workwear collection has been a hit among that demographic on social media. Lewinsky models pieces that range from $58 to $798: A-line dresses, sleek suiting, a leather trench coat and a bold red two-piece. But this campaign is not all about the look, the brand makes clear in its messaging about “giving you the power” ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election in November. “Voting is using your voice to be heard, and it’s the most defining aspect of democracy,” Lewinsky says on the campaign website’s landing page, which features a “voting hub” in partnership with the non-partisan organization Vote.org . “If you wanna complain for the next four years, you gotta go out and vote.” Reformation has two Toronto stores, in Yorkville and Yorkdale. – Aruna Dutt

A dining adventure in Haida Gwaii

haida gwaii guided kayak tours

A new culinary offering from restaurant Raincoast Breads allows diners to delve into the wealth of wilderness from the 150-island B.C. archipelago of Haida Gwaii. Ian Harland/Kingfisher Wilderness Adventures

In the 150-island archipelago of Haida Gwaii , off the coast of northern British Columbia, vast rainforests, beaches and hot springs host at least 39 distinct subspecies of plants and animals. A new culinary offering from Raincoast Breads allows tourists to dive into this wealth of wilderness by bringing it to their plates. Chef Kevin Hennig’s tasting menu, priced at $225 at the Raincoast Breads restaurant, will also be served during Kingfisher’s Gwaii Haanas kayak and backcountry camping adventures from mid-June to the end of August. At the end of the five-, eight-, or 15-day trips, guests will get a first-hand look at how foraged ingredients make up North Oceanic dishes such as a forest vegetable salad made with claytonia, springbank violets, woodruff, burdock root, redwood sorrel leaves and blossoms. This “grand finale dinner” is served in a private dining room in the village of K’il Kun (Sandspit). Raincoast Breads also offers foraging tours for guests who are interested in learning more. Upgrade a YYZ layover

haida gwaii guided kayak tours

The Sheraton Gateway at Toronto International Airport now offers family suites. Handout

For many Canadian travellers, changing planes in Toronto is an unavoidable nuisance. The longer the layover, the more desperate the urge to escape the airport. If you’ve got kids in tow, consider the new family suites at YYZ’s Sheraton Gateway Hotel – great for naps and overnight sleeps. Two have just opened, with two more on the way. The gaming suite turns one bed and a seating area into a kids-only zone complete with a gaming chair, a PlayStation 5 console, gamer-themed bedding and wall art. The second – a “world of wonders” suite – appeals to younger kids with adorable cartoon animal bedding, a pop-up safari tent to sleep in and hopscotch rugs. But if your kids are enthralled by enormous jets taking off and landing on the next-door runway, book a room with a view of the tarmac instead (the new family-themed suites only have city views). Travellers with a daytime layover (and no access to airport lounges) might try Sheraton’s $60-a-day pass for its private Club Lounge (meeting spaces, all-day snacks and non-alcoholic drinks) that also includes use of the hotel’s snazzy Peloton studio, fitness centre and runway-view indoor pool. – Catherine Dawson March

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
