BARRY MANILOW

NATIONWIDE ARENA

COLUMBUS, OHIO | AUGUST 25, 2023

By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

From his humble beginnings as a youth in Brooklyn to selling out Carnegie Hall to performing on American Bandstand and to maintaining an extensive Las Vegas residency, renowned, legendary singer-songwriter Barry Manilow continues to lead a healthy career in music as was proved last night in front of a packed house in Columbus.

Here are five takeaways from last night:

—If you’ve been to a Barry concert you might have heard him tell the same stories (including the story about his Grandpa and the “Happy Birthday” song) but the reflective memories from his younger years have a much different tone today, hitting different now that he’s 80.

—His ability to consistently sing in tune and maintain extended sustained notes with a melodic tone is remarkable.

—Manilow’s endurance and stamina is physically and mentally inspiring—singing songs back-to-back, briefly jogging off stage to change into a new jacket (adding up to at least nine different jackets) and his in-synch, hip thrusting dancing.

—Between songs his hilarious comedic comments made the entertainer’s sense of humor and light-hearted personality shine. (He joked: as long as there are elevators and dentist offices, his music will have longevity.)

—Each of the 20 hit songs performed was an event in itself with 70’s-esque images on a backing video wall, an extraordinary backing band and supporting singers. A few times Barry played piano on each side of the stage. During “Made It Through The Rain,” fans interacted and waved green glow sticks that were provided.

Barry Manilow has performed 15 times in Columbus throughout his career and it’s been eight years since his last stop in the capital city. Barry’s first album, self-titled, was released five decades ago in 1973.

Great review for the BEST entertainer & man!!!

I was transported back to my days as a pre teen and teenager.Barry sounded wonderful and the energy was so incredible.

Barry Manilow Live in Savannah, Georgia —  The Concert Review

Barry Manilow Live in Savannah, Georgia —  The Concert Review post thumbnail image

I traveled to see Barry Manilow’s Savannah, Georgia date of the “Hits 2023!” Tour.  Does a concert consisting of only hits work? If your Barry Manilow it does. As you’ll read in this review, seeing the show increased my appreciation for Barry Manilow. The songs he sings are hits for a reason.

I was in a melancholic mood that Sunday. There was a chill in the air, but the night had plenty of promise. Why? I maybe felt the blues, but was about to put myself in the hands of a professional. Not a therapist or even a bartender, but rather an entertainer named Barry Manilow.

As someone who has seen a great many musical performers take the stage, I can verify that Manilow as an artist is a man alone. He’s one of those people you see bathed in the bright lights and you think: “he was meant for the stage.”

Manilow on stage: “the highest calling”

His friend and longtime songwriting partner Marty Panzer put it so passionately and directly:

“When I watch Barry on the stage in Vegas, you think, there just is no greater thrill than being on that stage!  It doesn’t matter what you do behind the scenes.  When you see Barry glowing on stage, you think, that is the highest calling!”

And Marty is right, Barry does glow on stage. And a funny thing happens to the audience. They start glowing too. It’s kind of a miracle.

Barry Manilow first performance in Savannah since 1985

Barry Manilow was performing in Savannah, Georgia. It felt poetic to travel there to see his show, especially for a lover of the American Songbook. It would be Manilow’s first performance in Savannah in 38 years (1985).

Whenever in Savannah, I always remember and pay respects to the late Johnny Mercer, by visiting his statue in Ellis Square. Mercer was one of the greatest lyricists ever and had a mutual admiration for Manilow. After his passing, Johnny’s widow sent Manilow some of his unfinished lyrics to hopefully become songs. Manilow composed a gorgeous, but brooding melody that fit one of Mercer’s lyrics perfectly and it became somewhat of a standard: “When October Goes.”

Although the original version from Manilow’s “2:00 AM Paradise Cafe” is sublime, you’ll also enjoy the interpretation Tamela D’Amico recorded.

However, Barry Manilow’s concert wouldn’t focus on the obscure, yet remarkable songs like “When October Goes.” This tour was entitled “Manilow Hits 2023!” Whereas some great performers only have one or two, Barry has always been long on hits.

“It’s a Miracle,” a stalwart opening song

The opening song was “It’s a Miracle.” As Marty Panzer told me more than 10 years ago: “You know, it’s been his opening number for thirty-two years?  For as long as he’s been on the road, it’s been his opening number.  He’s tried a hundred other numbers as the opening number, but the one number that gets the audience excited in a familiar, friendly, comfortable, approachable way is “It’s A Miracle”, and it was our first hit single, too.”

It’s a tried and true opener. The song had the entire arena in full-on festive mood. By the end of the tune, I was singing along, full of smiles and feeling great about my decision to make the sojourn.

Hits, hits and hits

From there, Manilow and his band, who he described as some of the most talented people you’ll ever meet, mesmerized the crowd with hit after hit. What the audience was promised, they got. They played these hits like their life depended it. Some of the songs Manilow wrote, some he didn’t: “Daybreak,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” “I Made It Through the Rain.” In Barry’s hands, he made them his own. Do you know what I mean?

The songs that night captured every facet of human emotion. To quote an old country song, “cry a little, it’ll be good for you.” For me, that was a part of the show too. It happened during “Even Now,” and I can be quite certain I was not alone.

Barry Manilow’s concerts are a confluence of greatness

Barry Manilow is a perfectionist, as anyone who saw the show in Savannah could attest. Eventually there was the last song: “Copacabana.” As I stood alone in the crowd I marveled at what had transpired.

It was the confluence of a lot of great things. All of the light and sound crew shining at their expertise, then the skilled instrumentalists and the excellent backing vocalists. Of course we can’t forget the top lyricists and composers, Barry included, who crafted these songs.

Then there was the man himself: Barry Manilow. Barry from Brooklyn is always worth the trip no matter where he goes.

Frank Sinatra Jr. expressed his appreciation for Manilow

Almost nobody did a better job of describing Manilow than the late Frank Sinatra, Jr.

“Barry Manilow is one of the biggest musical talents to hit the recording industry in decades and unfortunately we’re talking about the ’70s. I wonder, if Barry Manilow were 35, 40 years younger, right now, and just getting started, if anybody in the quote ‘music community’ unquote, would even pay attention to him.

His songs have melodies, they have harmonic changes, they are intelligent, they are musical, and this is the kind of thing that no longer seems to matter anymore.”

Jeff Pike describes the appeal of Barry Manilow

A versatile, seasoned performing and recording artist Jeff Pike has bonded with me for years over a lot of great music. Barry Manilow has always been a part of our friendship. Jeff described Barry’s appeal:

“The first time I saw Barry Manilow live was in 1982 at the Omni and I will never forget it. Since then I’ve seen Barry countless times and I have a wide variety of music I enjoy and I’m a rock and roller too. A lot of people wonder why I would go see a Barry Manilow concert and then make fun of me. And I still get it. I’d say: ‘You don’t understand. There’s good musicians and there’s good entertainers regardless of what genre of music you’re in.’

I have seen hundreds of concerts in my time. And I have rarely seen an entertainer give a well-rounded show like Barry Manilow.

He’s personable. He’s likable. It’s show biz. It’s Las Vegas. It’s cabaret. It’s club. It’s pop. It’s rock and roll. It’s theatre. It’s everything. And you smile all the time. You walk into his theatre and you leave smiling. And you leave dancing. And all of the songs, whether you know them or not, they stick in your heart and they stick in your head.

And all I can say is, no matter what kind of music you like, you owe it to yourself to see Barry Manilow at least one time. Whether you like his music or not, you will have a great time. And you’ll walk away with a respect for him you didn’t have going in. Barry Manilow is the man.”

Listening to Barry Manilow is to be in a good place

For those who have seen a Barry Manilow concert, you understand. If it has to be explained, maybe you won’t ever understand. But, being grouped in club Manilow is not a bad place to be.

Frank Sinatra considered himself a fan, just like his son did. But, Bob Dylan sang Barry’s praises too. If you’ve never seen him, as Jeff Pike said “you owe it to yourself to see him.” For those who have seen the man in concert, “Why don’t you see the show again?”

P. S. Driving to Savannah, I had the clever and humorous Robert McCready on the phone to keep me company. Thank you Mr. McCready, for the food for thought and all of the laughs.

Barry Manilow performs on his "Hits 2023" tour at Amway...

He writes the songs that make the whole world sing, and Tuesday night in Orlando’s Amway Center , Barry Manilow showed that’s still the case.

“Disney World is down the block but tonight, this is the happiest place on earth,” he greeted the crowd during a stop in his “Hits 2023? mini-tour of just seven cities.

With a twinkle in his eye and a spring in his step, Manilow celebrated 50 years of hitmaking — his first record was released in 1973 — during a 90-minute concert that never flagged. Nearly 80 — his birthday is in June — Manilow could be expected to come across as some pontificating elder statesman of pop. But he doesn’t.

That’s just not his style.

barry manilow tour review 2023

Instead, he appears to be just as he is: Happy to share his music, grateful for his success and in slight disbelief that the youngsters today are making up TikTok dances to his songs. He’s often accused of being schmaltzy — the “sultan of schmaltz” proclaims a Sydney (Australia) Morning Herald headline, while London’s The Guardian goes for “titan of schmaltz” — but is it really schmaltz if it’s sincere?

Manilow’s tale of his grandfather’s encouragement, culminating in a moving performance of “This One’s for You,” touched the heart.

And he’s well aware of his rep.

“I must have a ballad somewhere,” he cracked at one point.

“Weekend in New England” was delivered simply and effectively, emphasizing what makes Manilow’s songs both of their time and yet strangely timeless. He creates a sense of drama in the lyrics and orchestrations so that each song feels like an emotional journey.

barry manilow tour review 2023

Of course, the most obviously dramatic is “Copacabana,” which was given a fun finale with the requisite gaudy costumes.

Other up-tempo numbers also offered enjoyment: a swirling mix of “Could It Be Magic” evoked the disco age while “”Jump Shout Boogie” offered kicky 1940s flair. He turned “Can’t Smile Without You” and “I Write the Songs” into singalongs.

The sound mix improved as the show went on, with the 10-piece band and three backing singers adding to the show’s vitality.

Of course, Manilow couldn’t help but show his age occasionally.

“Have you noticed the lack of melody on the radio today?” he asked the appreciative audience, though to be fair, he praised today’s “good music” for its use of rhythm.

And he knows his audience; in fact, his rapport with the crowd is part of what makes him such an enduring showman. He still has an ongoing residency at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, owned by Central Floridians David and Jackie Siegel.

“Ever hear of TikTok?” he queried Tuesday night before performing the upbeat “Dancing in the Aisles,” a newer song that has inspired youngsters to create their own choreography seen in videos they post on the social-media platform.

Barry Manilow played 90 minutes of hits on an Orlando tour stop at the Amway Center on Jan. 17.

He featured those videos on his own big screen, which also occasionally flashed album covers from days gone by — including an image of him with the quintessential 1970s feathered hair. “Really? Really?” he exclaimed. “Take that down!”

The walk down memory lane culminated neatly in a video of an early performance of “Mandy,” segueing sweetly into his crowd-pleasing live rendition.

Lake Howell High School director of bands José Eslava was recognized as the winner of a contest run by Manilow Music Foundation to promote music education. Eslava won $5,000, and an additional $5,000 was donated to the school for instrument purchases.

Opener Gordie Brown had a tough row to hoe, with an audience eager for the main event. The Las Vegas impressionist-comedian pulled out a lot of voices — he imitates everyone from Katharine Hepburn to Willie Nelson to Louis Armstrong to country singer Josh Turner in rapid succession — but his goofy, scattershot set was a mere distraction until Manilow took the stage.

Barry Manilow, shown at the Amway Center on Jan. 17, released his first album in 1973.

It has been 30 years since the last time I saw Manilow in concert; I was a college student and took a date to his show. I remember a romantic walk back to campus in the rain, and I remember being impressed with how well Manilow connected with the audience and how well his smartly crafted pop held up.

Times change, but some things do not. Manilow’s still got it.

Entertainment | barry manilow, at 80, still has the drive to play live.

The last time Barry Manilow came through these parts he was on his One Last Time! Tour, promising it would be his last major road trip.

“But I didn’t want to retire,” the man who writes the songs that make the whole world sing (though, ironically, not THAT one), says by phone from his home in California. “I just had to get off the road. After awhile it just got to me — the hotels and airplanes and bad room service. I was in some locker room that was a dressing room and I looked at my manager Garry (Kief) and said, ‘I think I’m done.'”

As he noted, Manilow, 80, has found other ways to occupy his time. He’s released two albums since then and had an expected hit in 2020 when his 1989 song “When the Good Times Come Again” was renewed during the pandemic. He also got “Harmony,” his stage musical about the Comedian Harmonists in Germany during the 1920s, bound for Broadway, where it opens during October.

And he’s continued to perform, with a regular residency at the Westgate Resort & Casino in Las Vegas and occasional short-burst forays to “some of our favorite cities.”

“It’s perfect because I can still do my thing on stage and not be away from home the way I used to,” Manilow explains. “I still have the passion and the edge. I’ve got this great catalog of songs and this great band and it’s just a wonderful experience. I still love performing but I love being home as well as I love being on stage. So the way we’re doing it now is perfect.”

Manilow’s current show is titled Hits! 2023, and that’s exactly what he delivers. And he has the goods; 17 Top 20 singles on the Billboard 200 chart since his debut album came out 50 years ago, and 15 of those hit No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart — including pop staples such as “Mandy,” “It’s a Miracle,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” “Looks Like We Made It” and “I Write the Songs.” (“Copacabana (At the Copa)” was Top 10.)

“The audience now wants to hear the stuff that they know,” notes Manilow, who through his Manilow Music Project also honors a music teacher in each municipal area he plays (Michael Steele of Lake Orion High School will received a $5,000 prize and another $5,000 to buy instruments for his program).

“Every time I try to put an album cut in I can feel the air go out of the room — not every time, but overall they want to hear the stuff they know, and I am one of the lucky guys who has enough familiar songs that I can fill out the whole evening. So I give that to them, and I’m happy to do it.”

Manilow was, nevertheless, caught off guard that “When the Good Times Come Again” has jumped onto the list of songs fans know.

“I had forgotten totally about that song when it jumped on the charts,” he says. “We were all surprised. I guess it was very appropriate for where we were at that point — and I think it’s appropriate any ol’ time. That’s a wonderful lyric, wonderful melody. Most of my songs have a lot of feeling to them, but that one was right on the money. It said what we were all feeling at the time.”

Manilow will be adding music to his canon as well. He’s “just finishing” a new pop album, though he quips that, “you tell me how to sell one of those now.” He’s also working on a Christmas album, while the upcoming Broadway run of “Harmony,” which premiered 26 years ago in San Diego, will bring greater attention to the songs he wrote for the piece.

“That feels unbelievable,” Manilow says. “I was raised with this attitude of ‘Don’t get your hopes up because it’ll never happen,’ about so many things. But as it’s gotten closer and closer to actually happening, it was thrilling. We hit a lot of brick walls, but we always came back…and now, here we are.

“Like I said, I still feel the passion. I still feel the edge. And the day that I don’t, that’s when I actually will hang it up. But I’m still there. I still have a head of hair. I don’t have a big pot belly. I’m still able to run around on stage without limping. So far nothing seems to have changed drastically yet. I know it will, because I’m a man of a certain age…but not yet.”

Barry Manilow performs at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22 at Little Caesars Arena, 2645 Woodward Ave., Detroit.  313-471-7000 or 313Presents.com.

Barry Manilow’s calling his latest tour Hits 2023! And as we know, he has a lot of them to choose from.

The guy who wrote the songs that make the whole world sing (although not THAT song, ironically) has 17 Top 20 singles -- 15 of which hit No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart -- dating back to his debut album in 1973. That came after Manilow (born Barry Allen Pincus in New York and raised in Brooklyn) famously wrote advertising jingles (State Farm Insurance, Band-Aid, Pepsi, McDonald’s and more) and was Bette Midler’s accompanist and producer, and he went on to helm albums by Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughan.

At 79 years old, Manilow remains one of the most prolific performers in contemporary pop music. Since emerging in the mid-'70s, Manilow has dropped over 50 chart-performing singles, 13 of which reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Some of his most magical hits include “Looks Like We Made It,” “I Write the Songs,” “Could it Be Magic,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” and “Copacabana (At the Copa).”

Manilow released his self-titled debut album in 1973. The record comes after Manilow spent the later part of the ‘60s writing jingles for major brands and TV commercials. He also served as a producer for Bette Midler’s debut and sophomore album. In 1973, Manilow’s debut album made an immediate breakthrough into the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at number 28. The album, which spawned the hit “Could It Be Magic,” sold over 500,000 copies, earning gold status in the U.S.

The following year, Manilow released the massive hit single “Mandy.” The song, a cover of the original hit “Brandy” by Scott English, topped the Billboard Hot 100 and two other Billboard charts. Besides the U.S., the gold-certified single also dominated the charts in three other countries and entered the top 20 of five others. The single brought Manilow’s sophomore album, Barry Manilow II, commercial success. The album soared to number 9 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified platinum in 2020 after selling over one million copies. For the rest of the ‘70s, Manilow dropped several more platinum-selling records, including Tryin’ To Get the Feeling, This One’s For You, Even Now, and One Voice. All these albums entered the top 10 of the Billboard 200 and spawned several iconic hits, including “I Write the Songs,” “Looks Like We Made It,” and “Can’t Smile Without You.”

Over two next decades, Manilow continued to drop several highly-acclaimed albums. Some of his more notable releases include his 1998 cover album, Manilow Sings Sinatra, and The Greatest Songs of the Fifties, released in 2006. The record featured several popular songs during Manilow’s youth, such as “Unchained Melody,” “Moments to Remember,” and “It’s Not For Me to Say.” Moreover, the album topped the Billboard 200 and later sold over one million copies in the U.S.

Manilow’s exemplary works have earned him multiple accolades, including two Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, a Special Tony Award, and two American Music Awards. In 2003, he received the Society of Singers Lifetime Achievement Award. Furthermore, Manilow has been inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and earned a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2009, Manilow’s early works as a jingle writer were commemorated with an Honorary Clio Award.

Live reviews

My husband and I attended the concert in the KFC Yum Center Friday June 5, 2015.

I am a die hard Barry Manilow fan of 40 years. It was a bucket list item for me to see him. My husband, on the other hand appreciated Barry's music but never considered himself a "real" fan. So, I will give you a review from both sides of the spectrum.

For the die hard fan this concert was nothing short of fantastic! I was carried back to my teenage years listening over and over to Barry's album's. I sang, I cried, I applauded until my hands hurt and I danced!! Never in my wildest dreams did I expect such a concert....If you don't have tickets to one of the remaining shows then please go and get them now. You will not regret it! My favorite moment...."Looks Like We Made It" and "Copa Cabana" have to tie but they were opposite ends of the spectrum.

For the person who knows Barry's music but not a die hard fan....my husband was blown away by this concert. He has said over and over that he is so glad that we were able to experience this. And he counts it as a highlight experience. He was amazed at the Broadway quality of the show as well as Barry's ability to entertain even at 71 years of age.

Believe me when I tell you this is something you will not regret! But, be prepared to be transported back in time and to experience a huge variety of emotions. As his music tends to lend itself to a huge range!

I hope this will convince you to attend this concert. Enjoy :)

A Barry Manilow concert has been on my wish list since I was a child. I was so happy when I had the opportunity to see him live, at the Pensacola Bay Center, in January, 2014.

Always the gentleman, Manilow isn't one for tacky outfits, instead performing in a suit with a shiny pink vest and matching pocket handkerchief. Now well into his golden years, Manilow proved himself to be the consummate entertainer, hitting the stage with the same energy he had when he began is five decade career.

Manilow's first song, "It's a Miracle," had the entire audience on its feet, singing, dancing, and clapping, and set the tone for the rest of the evening. He even did a little dancing himself, shimmying right alongside of his back-up singers as they joined him at the front of the stage. The hit list contained all time favorites, “This One’s For You,” “Mandy,” “Copacabana (At the Copa),” “I Write the Songs," without shorting the audience out of the need for ballads, sitting at the piano and singing "Even Now" and the deeply touching "I Am Your Child."Fortunately, Manilow left Las Vegas in Las Vegas and there wasn't any glitzy or tacky Vegas show to be seen.

It was simply Barry Manilow, his back-up singers, and the instrumentals, which was all the show needed. If you're not a Barry Manilow fan now, make it a point to see one of his shows and you will be.

Despite now being in his 70s, Barry Manilow performs with the enthusiasm of a singer half of his age. The celebrated star has been a frequenter of the charts for over four decades and has achieved commercial and critical success on both sides of the Atlantic. So there is a clearly a demand to see the veteran performer live.

An endearing and warm showman, Barry never fails to build a real connection with his crowd and despite often selling out arenas he has a way in which to make the whole experience feel rather intimate. As he sits at the piano and performs classics such as 'Could It Be Magic' you could hear a pin drop as the audience are transfixed. However by the conclusion the roar from inside the arena is deafening and no matter how many rounds of applause he must have received over his career, he still appears incredibly grateful.

Barry regales the audience with tales of his past experiences and the meanings behind certain hits throughout the gig before teasing the introduction to mega-single 'Mandy' as his slick backing band begin the opening bars. A wonderful experience and a fantastic performer who really could not be living the simple life of a pensioner.

We saw Barry last night in Philadelphia. He still has it, put on a very good show. Only thing is I wish that he would have played longer, maybe have a 30 minute intermission then come out for a second segment. Show started 7:45 and was over at 9:15. Needless to say it was an early night, I realize he played 1 1/2 hrs, but there was no opening act and I thought if he played another 45 minutes to an hour it would have been much better, especially for the cost of tickets.

The show was unbelievable! He was amazing even at the age of 73! I never sat down and I sang every word to every song. I had the time of my life. At the end of the concert a Choctaw employee asked me to go to stage right. He presented me with a poster that Barry had signed and he said, "He signed this poster and told us to give it to the biggest fan we saw." It was and honor to be able to receive the poster and I wouldn't trade those memories for the world!

Radiators fail once more: Moscow suburbs residents appeal to Putin

R esidents across the Moscow suburbs are besieged by a heating problem, for which they plead direct intervention from President Vladimir Putin. These individuals have yet to experience any semblance of home heating since winter started due to a dwindling supply of heating oil. The issue, one largely avoided by local authority communication, has left residents desperate to the point of directly appealing to the president.

While plots have been uncovered to disrupt Ukraine's infrastructure for a second consecutive winter, thus depriving civilians of heating, it seems Russians are now mired in their crisis. Irony drips from the fact that those under Putin's leadership are looking to cause turmoil in Ukraine, yet at home, they face a similar predicament.

Many dwellings within the Moscow agglomeration are presently without heat. The capital's residents are desperate, directly appealing to President Putin due to a perceived lack of alternate avenues for assistance. The absence of suitable heating functionality since winter commenced pushes them towards desperation with no relief in sight.

This seems improbable, but in Russia, it appears that anything can happen.

It remains uncertain if Vladimir Putin is actively addressing the heating crisis. Some experts suggest that Russia's heating oil reserves are depleting, which negatively affects residents' quality of life. Plagued by cold radiators and plummeting winter temperatures, these citizens have directly addressed their pleas to their head of state.

This heating crisis is happening in Elektrostal, a town approximately 71 miles from Moscow.

Ironically, Russia has constantly aimed to destroy the Ukrainian infrastructure since war broke out, deliberately trying to leave Ukrainians without heating during the harsh winters, aiming to break their strong will. It's an irony they now struggle with a domestic heating crisis, particularly near Moscow, their largest and most pivotal city.

Desperate individuals are reaching out to Vladimir Putin. They question his knowledge of the heating infrastructure conditions in the Moscow suburbs and the dire situations residents face there. Sundown brings no relief from the harsh Russian winter and without heating, their houses turn cold. With elections nearing, more and more residents find themselves reaching out directly to their president.

"Since winter's start, we've been without heating. This has been a yearly occurrence for the past three years. Despite paying for heating, we don't have enough. We implore you, help us!" - these are the desperate pleas from the heavily dressed populace dealing with the Russian winter conditions.

Experts attribute the heating oil shortage to international sanctions and surging demands for diesel fuel, pivotal to military operations. Russia now grapples with a dearth of raw materials essential for boiler and heating plant operation. As supplies dwindle, houses grow cold with little hope of any immediate corrective intervention.

It would be adequate if the war ceased, residents were prioritized, and attention accorded to their welfare.

MONINO AVIATION MUSEUM

A superb visit with a very organised, friendly and accommodating company. I could not go at regular departure time so Maria reorganized my tour to later in day. All the advice she gave prior to departure very worthwhile and excellent. Museum itself is superb but having her very knowledgeable Father who is both an expert on Russian aircraft and has a great passion for aviation made the tour extremely interesting. Cannot give enough phrase and credit to both this company and people there. Very highly recommended.

We had been nervous about going on our very first tour but we ended up wishing we'd booked for longer. Svetlana knows her subject, has the gift of communicating with people not lecturing at them and as a bonus, she is excellent company. We gained an enormous amount of interesting knowledge and thanks to her, an understanding of this fascinating city. Also a big thanks for tailoring the tour both to our interests and my wife's mobility level. No easy task but Svetlana handled it all with efficiency and kindness.

Even before we finalized our tour, Svetlana was prompt and patient in answering every questioned we had about her tours. She showed up in lobby of the hotel with a big smile and friendly demeanor even way earlier than our agreed upon time and gamely started our tailor fit walking tour in freezing weather. Part of our private tour is a foodie break over lunch where she gladly introduced and explained a typical Russian/ Ukrainian meal which for us is part of the experience when traveling. Lunch included discussions of Russian history and current affairs that were truly enlightening. There was also the instance when she had to elbow our way to get very limited slots for the Bolshoi theater tour which only showed her commitment as a tour guide, Svetlana was able to impress upon us her love of what she does for a living and I would like to think we ended the day as friends.

Third tour I did with Maria - this fact alone speaks for itself. Most importantly for any tour to be enjoyable, you need to have a fun, knowledgeable and dedicated tour guide. Don't look any further than Maria. She is a true Muscovite, really passionate about her city and knows all and everything about this megalopolis! Highly recommend the 'hidden gems' tour but you can customize anything, last one we decided on an 'architectural neighbourhood' walk and drive tour! See you soon Maria!

A day tour with HappyMoscowTours.Ludmilla was terrific. She picked us up from our hotel and we caught a train into the city. She was interesting with excellent english. Very accomodating and showed us some fascinating places including a mini market which sold authentic souvenirs.

On July 25th 2016 I booked a tour of the Moscow Kremlin. My guide Svetlana Shubina met me prompt at the appointed time and on entering the Kremlin gave me a short but instructive summary of the history of the place. During the tour Svetlana continued to enlighten me on historical and architectural aspects of the churches and other buildings. I found Svetlanas desriptions of the various Tsars, their doings and those of people in power during the communist era both informing and interesting. I found Svetlanas presentation to be delightful and would recommend her services as a guide to other tourists. Yours sincerely Donald Johnston

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.
