Which is the Best Island in Kota Kinabalu ?

Within the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, there are 5 different islands to explore namely Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug Island. The islands are just a few kilometres from the mainland, making them easily accessible from downtown Kota Kinabalu.

While each of the islands in the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park have stunning beaches and spectacular diving and snorkelling sites, they are all slightly different in terms of what they offer. To help you decide which islands to visit while island hopping at Kota Kinabalu , below is a brief overview of each of the islands.

We’ve also provided a map so you can see where the islands are located as well as the different accommodation options we talk about later in this guide.

Kota Kinabalu Island Hopping map

Gaya Island, Kota Kinabalu

Gaya Island is the largest of all the islands in the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park and after Sapi and Manukan Islands is one of the most developed islands. It is also the closest island near Kota Kinabalu, Sabah .

Gaya Island is covered with dense tropical forest and includes over 20 kilometres of light jungle hiking tracks, making it the best island around Kota Kinabalu for those who enjoy hiking. During these walks, you might even be lucky enough to spot animals such as bearded pigs, proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, hornbills an d even a few snake species.

Gaya Island Beach

The island is also fantastic for swimming and snorkelling. For those interested in diving, be sure to stop by the Downbelow Dive Centre.

In terms of accommodation, Gaya Island offers the most island resorts near Kota Kinabalu out of all the islands. Guests can stay at one of two five star resorts, either Gayana Island Resort or Bunga Raya Island Resort. Another option is the Gayana Marine Resort.

Sapi Island, Kota Kinabalu

Known as “Cow Island”, along with Manukan Island, Sapi is located just 200 metres off the tip of Gaya Island. Sapi Island is said to be the best island near Kota Kinabalu for beaches, as well as some of the best snorkelling and dive sites. Other beach activities include parasailing, banana boat ride and sea walking.

Sapi Island In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Perhaps one of the more unique things to do on all of the islands is here on Sapi Island – and that’s to zipline on the Coral Flyer 235 metres from Sapi to Gaya Island! Unfortunately, this is currently closed but hopefully it opens again soon.

While the island features a jetty, picnic shelters, BBQs, changing rooms and toilets, the island doesn’t have any accommodation. However, people are welcome to camp after obtaining permission from the park warden.

Manukan Island, Kota Kinabalu

Beach On The Manukan Island, Sabah, Malaysia.

Manukan Island is one of the most developed islands and is the second largest island after Gaya. It is also one of the most popular islands to visit on an island hopping tour Kota Kinabalu offers, with some of the best coral reefs for swimming, diving and snorkelling and the island also has some great hiking tracks too.

Of all the islands, Manukan Island has some of the best facilities for visitors including luxury accommodation at the Manukan Island Resort, restaurants and a dive centre.

Mamutik Island, Kota Kinabalu

The Mamutik Island, Sabah, Malaysia.

Mamutik Island is the smallest island in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah marine park and also doesn’t offer much in the way of facilities for visitors.  However, the island still has some gorgeous beaches and incredible coral reefs for snorkelling.  Amenities on this island in Sabah, Kota Kinabalu include changing rooms, toilets, picnic shelters, tables and BBQs.

Sulug Island, Kota Kinabalu

Sulug Island

The furthest island from Kota Kinabalu, Sulug Island is also the least developed out of all the islands.  Sulug offers excellent coral reefs and is the best island to visit in Kota Kinabalu for visitors wanting to escape the crowds.

DIY Island Hopping in Kota Kinabalu

Jesselton Pt

If you’re wanting to arrange your own island hopping Kota Kinabalu package , then you’ll need to make your way down to the Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal in downtown Kota Kinabalu – where all the ferries to the islands depart from.

Boats to the islands start leaving at around 7.30 am and leave quite frequently – in most cases every hour until around lunchtime. Given the islands are so close to the mainland, regardless of which island you visit the ferry ride is not more than 15 to 20 minutes.

There are multiple tour operators to choose from, with each charging the same island hopping Kota Kinabalu price (around RM30). Then add around another RM10 for each additional island you wish to visit.

Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal, Kota Kinabalu

In addition to the Kota Kinabalu island hopping prices , you’ll also be required to pay a marine park entrance fee of RM20 (RM10 for Malaysians) on arrival at your first island.  Be sure to keep your ticket to show on arrival at other islands you visit during the day.

If you’re not joining a pre arranged island tour Kota Kinabalu offers, it’s recommended to hire your snorkelling gear from the terminal before reaching the islands as this is cheaper than renting on the islands.

It may also be worthwhile purchasing some food to take with you from the terminal as there are more options here then what you’ll find on the islands – and cheaper.

Most island trip Kota Kinabalu boats depart the islands around 4 pm at the latest.

Click here for the latest ferry schedules and ticket prices.

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo (2024)

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo (2024)

This is your ultimate, up-to-date guide on island hopping in Kota Kinabalu, including how to arrange a tour or go independently, expected prices, best islands to visit, what to bring with you, and much more.

As soon as you arrive in Kota Kinabalu , you’re aware of the South China Sea, stretching hundreds of miles into the deep blue distance. It’s the canvas for a thousand KK views but you’ll also notice something else glistening in the foreground, a cluster of small islands almost within touching distance of the city.

These five islands (Gaya, Manukan, Mamutik, Sapi, and Sulug) form the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, a tropical KK island hopping paradise, where you can swim, snorkel, sunbathe, and even parasail or banana boat around, or just relax surrounded by nature.

If you’re planning a Borneo island hopping adventure, the Kota Kinabalu islands are an easily accessible option. Indeed it’s perhaps the most popular of Kota Kinabalu day trips and a must if visiting Kota Kinabalu with kids . However, as we discuss later, it’s perhaps not the best place to go island hopping in Sabah.

Island hopping Kota Kinabalu map

The below map shows the Kota Kinabalu islands that make up Tunku Abdul Rahman Park.

Note that only the Kota Kinabalu islands of Gaya, Manukan, Mamutik, and Sapi are accessible to tourists.

Sulug has no amenities and tourists are not permitted to visit without permission from Sabah Parks.

The main hub to head for to start your adventures island hopping is Jesselton Point Quay. From here you can choose from a wide range of tour operators, all offering similar tours at similar prices. If you want to travel independently, they can set you up on a private boat, but bear in mind you’ll not get the islands to yourself in any case.

What is included on a Kota Kinabalu island hopping package?

The standard package will include return boat transfers to one or more of the four islands which make up the national park. When we booked, we were offered a choice of one or more islands, but were guided towards choosing two or three, typically Sapi and Manukan, plus one other.

kota kinabalu island tour

On top of the standard package, you can choose from several additional paid activities including:

  • parasailing
  • snorkelling
  • banana-boat

Please note that the zipline between  Gaya  and  Sapi  islands has been closed since the pandemic, with no sign of it reopening anytime soon.

These Kota Kinabalu island hopping activities can be booked onshore before you depart but we also found the tour guide was happy/eager to take cash payment during the tour, usually for a discount. Keep in mind availability is limited so during busier times, book everything you want to do in advance.

Also, try to bring your own snorkels if you can, the quality of the ones we rented were so poor they were unusable, and once you’re out on the islands, you can’t do much about it. We ended up holding our breath to look under the water through the googles.

What is the Kota Kinabalu island hopping itinerary

You can choose what time you want to leave but bear in mind this is Malaysia and, during busy times, the departure area has the feeling of an international airport terminal. Groups sit and wait on wooden benches until they are called; it can feel disorganised but someone was always there to help.

We booked for 9am and got on the boat about 9:30am. It might be better to book for an earlier departure if you are keen to get there before the main crowds (we wish we’d done this), but remember you might need to pay your balance and get kitted out in lifejackets first, so don’t leave it too late to arrive.

It’s about a 15 minute speedboat ride out to the first island (Manukan in our case) and this is a really fun way to start, especially after the crowds at the dock. It’s from here you’ll get the first sense of the beauty of the islands as they grow larger on horizon. It can feel like the start of a race though, as speedboats zoom off in directions. Try to get a seat at the front for a bump and a thrill!

Once on the island, you’ll pay a national park fee and start your first activity, usually snorkelling but you may also be heading off for another activity. Alternatively, try to find a spare patch of sand and relax. Your tour guide should keep you informed as to what you’re doing and when; as earlier, it might seem organised chaos but it tended to work out in the end. You may be given their WhatsApp number which is handy to find out where they are or where you need to be.

After a couple of hours, you’ll be ushered onto another boat and taken to your next island, from where the same process will repeat itself. Note that lunch isn’t provided so either bring something from the mainland (there is a Subway and supermarket opposite Jesselton Quay, as well as lots of little food stalls to grab a takeaway). There are some restaurants on the islands but these tend to be overpriced and variable quality.

In theory, you can specify a departure time up until 5pm but, in reality, you just seemed to be herded onto any available boat. Just try not to be the last ones on the dock, as beautiful as the islands are, you don’t want to be left stranded.

Is Kota Kinabalu island hopping worthwhile?

The answer to this depends slightly on the time of year you visit, the weather, and how big the crowds are. We were there in July and it was peak season and extremely busy. As we approached Manukan island, we soon realised the beach was 70% full (it was 10am) and the dock was overcrowded with other visitors waiting for an onward connection.

The snorkelling around Manukan was terrible although admittedly there had been torrential downpours the day before which would have affected both the visibility and amount of rubbish which was being washed up. We lasted about two minutes before giving up and retreating to the beach, finally finding a small patch of sand to call our own, surrounded by other tourists.

The other activities were a mixed success as well. The boys tried an expensive 3 minutes of parasailing but didn’t really enjoy it, the operator insisted on dropping them into the water every few seconds and the screams we heard weren’t of joy. It was advertised as a 45 minute experience but we soon realised this included boat time and all the other tourists on the boast taking their go; the actual ride felt very short.

We also did a banana boat ride but (and this was our fault), we told the driver we didn’t want to be thrown off, but he took this to extremes and pulled us along at walking pace for about five minutes! In the mean time, several passengers on the boat got seasick and we had to cut the ride short and head home. In hindsight, we should’ve asked for a speedier ride.

kota kinabalu island tour

The previous day’s storm added to the problems because so many people had had tours cancelled and were switched to our day, so it was probably even busier than normal. But, you do need to factor the crowds in, it really didn’t feel like a unique nature experience. At least not until the last island, by which time most tourists had left and we got to do some better snorkelling off Sapi Island.

If your visit coincides with a quieter time, when the weather is (and has been) good, it’s probably a better experience. We still had a fun day but with the combination of crowds, price, poor visibility, littered water, and occasional rain, Kota Kinabalu island hopping wasn’t really a highlight of our 10 weeks backpacking Southeast Asia with kids .

On top of this, some activities (e.g. the zipline between islands) were still closed post-COVID; it was unclear when or if they’d reopen, but keep an eye out if they do as we’ve heard it’s super fun!

How long is a Kota Kinabalu island hopping tour?

The tour lasts a whole day but you can choose your start and end time, within reason.

You need to arrive 30 minutes before the start time to get kitted out and pay any remaining balance. As we’ve mentioned, the timings of departure, transit, and return aren’t set in stone but it’s still best to book the times you think you’ll need.

How much does it cost to go island hopping in Kota Kinabalu?

The ferry (speedboat) prices are fixed at:

  • 1 island: adult RM35 child RM30
  • 2 islands: adult RM45 child RM40
  • 3 islands: adult RM55 child RM50
  • 4 islands: adult RM65 child RM60

Then the National Park fee for Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is paid on arrival to your first island (card only). This is RM25 per adult per day, RM20 per child (17 and under) per day ( click here for up-to-date prices).

We also paid RM10 each for the snorkels which was a waste of money. Try to bring your own or at least check the ones you rent before moving on. If you’re snorkelling anywhere else on your trip, and have space, it’ll work out cheaper to buy a brand new pair.

All in all, our Kota Kinabalu island hopping day cost RM560 (approximately £95) for our family of four. This included, ferry, national park fees, snorkel hire, parasailing and banana boat ride.

Considering our daily spend during our 10 weeks backpacking Southeast Asia averaged at £110 per day (this included everything from food, accommodation, activities, travel), the island hopping Kota Kinabalu day was pretty pricey. Although this is inline with other tour excursions in Borneo, such as the Kinabatangan River (which was incredible).

What’s the best way to book island hopping in Kota Kinabalu?

Head down to  Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal   to book in person. It’s a good idea to do this the the day before you want to visit the islands (before 5pm) to get sorted. Although if rain is forecast, you may want to leave it until the morning of to see if the forecast changes (get down to Jesselton Point between 8am and 9am).

Alternatively, you can prebook online via Klook :

There are four islands to visit and it’s a fixed price to visit 1, 2, 3 or 4 islands in one day (island hopping Kota Kinabalu ferry prices are detailed further up in this article). You can then add on activities at an extra cost (which can be negotiated).

kota kinabalu island tour

You can also book online, we saw some good offers there but the prices are very similar with the added slight complication of printing out confirmations, trying to make international credit cards work, and never been 100% sure the company still exists; it’s probably easier to book in person. Most hotels can book for you as well which is a good middle ground, you will pay a small commission though of course.

Do remember that whoever or however you book, you’re all heading to the same islands and once there, you’ll have the same experience, regardless of how you booked. Keep this in mind if tempted to book a fully private tour; you’ll have more control over timings but it won’t be any more private once you hit dry land.

Can you buy food and drinks on the island hopping trip?

There are restaurants on the islands. The food looked to be quite standard for KK if a little more expensive. They were never very busy, mainly because most other tourists took their own food and ate a picnic on the beach. That’s what we did and would recommend it.

There are also a couple of small shops (i.e. at Manukan Island) where you can buy ice-creams, drinks, and small snacks.

What should you take island hopping in Kota Kinabalu?

As well as some patience, try to take:

  • snorkels if you own them
  • change of clothes for the trip back
  • card for National Park fee payment
  • cash if you want to book activities during your KK island hopping adventure

Check out our Southeast Asia packing list for families

Can you stay on the islands?

There are a few pricey hotels and lodges dotted around the various islands. This is a great option if you can afford it as you’ll get to experience the islands for a few hours without the crowds. Bliss.

These include:

  • Sutera Sanctuary Lodges At Manukan Island
  • Gayana Marine Resort
  • Gaya Island Resort

Final thoughts on Kota Kinabalu island hopping

We had a mixed time island hopping at Kota Kinabalu, partly due to the bad weather from the previous day, and partly due to the sheer number of people sharing the experience. But we knew this in advance, it was Sabah in July and KK island hopping is the one thing everyone seems to tick off when visiting this region.

The tours are well organised if a little hectic; it always feels like it’s about to fall apart but then, out of nowhere, our guide would appear, frantically waving us onto the boat. The paid extras didn’t work for us and felt like a waste of time and money, although we were to blame for the sedate banana boat ride.

In spite of that, there were some magical moments; the speed boat rides were fun, the snorkelling on Sapi was pretty, and we loved being out on the islands when the crowds parted for a moment. At the end of the day, Kota Kinabalu island hopping is a popular activity in a popular region so, if you know what to expect and embrace the crowds, you can get a lot out of your trip. Plus, when you’re back in KK sipping a drink on the waterfront, you can stare out into the distance and say, “we were there”.

What is an island hopping trip?

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu boat

An island hopping trip is usually a day trip where you take a boat to several different islands – usually pretty close together. On most island hopping trips you will have an hour or two at each island with an opportunity to swim, snorkel or sunbathe.

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu beach

Island hopping trips tend to vary massively in terms of the price, quality and what is included. You can either arrange private island hopping trips, which tends to be more expensive or you can arrange group trips which will be cheaper. On a group trip you will be sharing the boat with other customers who have booked the same tour.

Is it worth taking island hopping in Kota Kinabalu?

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu sapi island

Yes, it is worth taking an island hopping trip in Kota kinabalu. However, it is very important to keep your expectations in check. The Kota Kinabalu island hopping trip is definitely not the most inspiring island hopping trip we have been on. Here are the pros and cons of the Kota Kinabalu island hopping trip.

Don’t miss our FULL GUIDE on the best places for Snorkelling in Malaysia

What is good about the Kota Kinabalu trip?

Black tip reef shark

Firstly, the water is pretty clear. The beaches are pretty clean and nice too. You can see some pretty cool stuff. We did see a small reef shark on Mamutik island and we saw a couple of sting rays on Sapi island. There are some sections of nice reef and a good number of fish in the water.

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu Mamutik island

What is not so good about the Kota Kinabalu trip?

The water is clear, however this is not the best option for snorkeling if you are hoping to see beautiful coral reef and sea life. Sadly much of the coral is bleached and dead. The water can be pretty shallow and there are not lots of choices about where to snorkel. We found the snorkeling quite controlled and restricted. There are netted areas to stay in. Some areas also have lots of sea urchins. There is also a risk of toxic stone fish on the seabed. Avoid touching sea life and do not walk on the coral.

Island hopping Kota Kinabalu boat trip

We don’t want to put you off – just help you picture what you can expect. Overall this trip is  great value for money.  Many island hopping trips in Southeast Asia will set you back at least $50 to $100. If you are hoping to take an island hopping trip in Sabah to experience beautiful coral reef and sea life, we recommend heading over to Semporna, Marbul or Sipadan (which is more expensive as it requires a permit)

What is included on a Kota Kinabalu island hopping trip?

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu Manukan island

The Kota Kinabalu island hopping trip includes boat transfers between the islands. They do not include snorkels, masks, food or anything else. They may even try to sell you a life jacket for an additional fee – BUT actually they have to give you one or they could get into trouble with the authorities. So just politely decline renting one and they should give you one on the boat.

Gaya island Kota Kinabalu Sabah

There are 4 islands that you can visit. Once you are on a tour they will give you timings and provide a boat between the islands. Once you have booked your tickets you just kind of need to go with the flow.

  • Gaya island – the biggest island
  • Manukan island – busy and developed
  • Mamutik island – nice small quiet island – nice snorkeling
  • Sapi island – small and lovely island just next to Gaya

kota kinabalu island tour

We recommend seeing 2-3 islands. If you try to visit all 4 islands you wont get long enough on each island to enjoy it properly. You also need to purchase a conservation permit for RM20 per person (you can buy this when you arrive at the first island – keep hold of your ticket for the next islands)

How do you book island hopping in Kota Kinabalu?

The SIMPLEST and most convenient way is to book a Kota Kinabalu island hopping trip on Klook . Alternatively you can book it yourself directly at the jetty. Here is the step by step guide…

  • 2 islands: Adult RM45 Child RM40

You also need to pay an island conservation fee (ONE fee per adult of RM20). Keep the ticket as this can be presented at each island.

Can you buy food and drinks on the island hopping trip?

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu food

The island hopping trip does not include any food or drinks in the cost of the trip. However, you can buy a limited range of food and drinks on some of the islands. The most developed Island is Manukan island and on this island you can buy local food for a reasonable price. We do recommend bringing a bottle of water and it is probably advisable to bring your own food as well.

If you prefer the peace of mind of having it book in advance then we recommend you book your trip on Klook…

Can you stay on the islands?

sutera Manukan

Yes, you can stay on some of the islands. If an island hopping day trip is not enough time, you can find resorts on some of the islands. Check out the very beautiful Sutera Sancturary Lodges located on Manukan island, beautifully situated on the main beach.

The 5 Ocean Pearls – Island hopping At Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu is surrounded by a bunch of small islands offering amazing water sports, sandy beaches, various water sports and coral reefs and more. Island hopping is one of the recommended things for tourists to do in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah . These 5 islands which lie close to each other form the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. A short 15-minute boat ride from Kota Kinabalu takes you there. The boat ride itself is fun and sets the pace for what has to follow. Some of the islands that can be explored in Kota Kinabalu Island Hopping tour includes Manukan Island, Sapi Island Mamutik Island & Sulug Island. An important thing to remember is that the local authorities protect the coral reef & marine life of these islands.

Manukan Island

Manukan Island is the most developed and favored islands with the tourists. The 1500 meter long sandy white beach at the island is perfect for relaxing. Snorkeling, scuba diving, beach volleyball, parasailing, banana boat ride, jet ski, swimming, hiking are some of the activities one can find there. The Manukan Island Resort by Sutera Sanctuary resorts is a wonderful place to spend a night. The beautiful cottages built on the hillside overlooking the ocean are a dream for any couple. Apart from the resort, basic facilities and small tourist shops which sell plastic phone covers, swimming goggles etc. Perahu Restaurant, Arang Barbecue & Koktas Café are a happy sight for hungry travellers.

kota kinabalu island tour

Sapi Island

Sapi Island or Pulau Sapi is one of the smallest islands in that zone. Though small in size, it’s a big favorite with tourist as it offers an amazing snorkeling experience and vibrant and rich marine life. Though small, it is a preferred destination on the Island Hopping Kota Kinabalu tour. The one not to be missed thrilling highlight on this island is the Coral flyer. The 235-meter zip liner that takes you from Gaya Island to Sapi Island in less than a minute, making you want it to last a little longer. Set at 45 meters above the sea, average speed ranges from 50-55 km per hour giving an experience of a lifetime.

Mamutik Island

Mamutik Island, locally known as Pulau Mamutik is part of this Kota Kinabalu Island Hopping tour. It might not be as popular as Manukan or Sapi islands but that means lesser crowds and more privacy, making it less touristy.  This is the one place from where you can view all the islands that form the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The island is at a distance of hardly 3kms from Kota Kinabalu city harbor and gives a great view of Kota Kinabalu city from the island. Like the other islands, Mamutik Island also offers scuba diving, snorkeling, water sports, swimming, camping, hiking and trail facilities. It is also the official training site for Borneo Divers, a PADI certified dive center in Kota Kinabalu.

Sulug Island

Pulau Sulug or Sulug Island as it is commonly known is the least developed or visited island in this group of islands. The island also known as rocky island provides a beautiful white sandy beach and crystal clear water for swimming, snorkeling & scuba diving for those who crave privacy. It does not offer much in the name of facilities but is a haven for those who crave the solitude and peace.

kota kinabalu island tour

How to Begin the Tour

Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal is the starting point of Island Hopping Kota Kinabalu tour is. The beautiful harbor lined with all boats is a delight to the eyes. There are many tour operators in the terminal who can do the needful for you. The speedboats start departing from the terminal at around 8 am and even earlier by 7:30 am on public holidays and weekends. To cover at least three islands in a day, try not spending more than two hours on each. Make sure to confirm the return timings of the speedboats which are generally around 4:30 pm as missing them means spending a night on the island.

Facilities Available on the Islands

These islands see major tourist traffic and so most of the basic facilities can be found there. Restaurants, cafes, and shops offering quick snacks, lunch, soft drinks, drinking water, mobile covers, beach mats, insect repellent, beach slippers, sunglasses, hats & more. Basic snorkeling & diving equipment such as fins, masks and life jackets can be rented quite easily from these shops on the island. Quite a few water sports and other activities are available which include Sea Walking, Scuba-Doo, Parasailing, Banana Boat Ride, Flying Fish and Jet ski to name a few.

Tips to Remember

Safety tips for the tour.

1. “Monitor Lizards” are found very often on these islands. Try not engaging with them.

2. It’s advisable to book these tours with proper tour companies. Borneo trails is one good company to explore.

3. Except for Manukan Island, you can camp at all the other islands. But don’t take forget to take permission from the island main reception. Camping tents are available for rent and can easily accommodate up to four people.

4. Children must be accompanied by adults at all times in the water. Certain areas of the beach have an unexpected 2-3 meters deep incline and can prove dangerous.

The Kota Kinabalu Island Hopping most definitely needs to be included in the itinerary of all tourists to enjoy rich marine life, water sports, snorkeling, scuba diving, or just relaxing by the beach.

Visitors will surely be fascinated by the uniqueness of the landmark.

Visitors can also find several restaurants by the sea that offers excellent food and service.
