The 10 Best Safari Outfitters in 2022

When checking off a major bucket list trip like a safari, customization and convenience are top of mind for Travel + Leisure readers.

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite Safari Outfitters.

Spotting the Big Five is the goal for many safari-goers. But chances of actually getting a glimpse of the elephants, leopards, lions, rhinoceroses, and African buffalos depend greatly on the company guiding the trip — especially its attention to the tiniest of details and its expertise on how to responsibly and carefully navigate on the African fauna's home turf. The best safari outfitters accomplish this with aplomb.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , Travel + Leisure asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

This year, three new safari outfitters entered the top 10 that weren't on last year's list. Deeper Africa (No. 5) is known for going beyond the obvious (a trip to Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo with more than 1,000 mountain gorillas, perhaps?), while Africa Adventure Company (No. 7) is operated by the author of a guidebook on the continent's wildlife who has more than three decades of experience, and Go2Africa (No. 9) is run by people born and raised in Africa . Customization options and personalized service were key for travelers. The "passionate" teams at Extraordinary Journeys (No. 2) took the time to understand what guests were hoping to get out of their safari experience and curate itineraries that were nothing short of "magical." One also called out the thoughtful conveniences — like car services and dayrooms in Nairobi — saying they added an elevated level of comfort that wasn't anticipated but "was a godsend."

The challenges of traveling during a global pandemic were also assuaged by the top companies, which, a reader, said addressed "every single one of [their] concerns and questions…before it came to mind," especially in a destination that can feel "complicated." One traveler complimented Extraordinary Journeys for making all the "intimidating" and "ever-changing rules" so "seamless."

Find the full list of this year's best tour operators, as voted by T+L readers, below.

1. Travel Beyond

After coming in fifth last year, this company — which runs tours in Botswana, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zanzibar, among others — rises to the top spot. In operation since 1975, Travel Beyond consistently impressed readers with its emphasis on putting travelers' needs first, by paying "close attention to all the details," and by working "very hard to get to know their clients' travel styles and interest." Its custom itineraries put responsible wildlife viewing and touring the area's unique scenery first, but also added in experiences like wine tastings and visits to historic landmarks to create "the most incredible adventures." A female solo traveler said they've planned "several once-in-a-lifetime trips" for her.

The best new African safari camps

By Condé Nast Traveller

Swalus Loapi

An African safari is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that every traveller should have. To be among some of the world's most captivating wildlife and untouched landscapes on the planet, just a few feet away from leopards lounging on trees or gazelles gallivanting across the Lower Zambezi, is a feeling far unmatched by a cityscape. And with a host of new African safari camps, there isn't a better time to venture into the wilderness than now…

Wilderness Usawa Tanzania

Wilderness Usawa Serengeti

Given its presence across Africa , safari brand Wilderness has taken its time to arrive in the Serengeti, but last summer it made its move, partnering with local walking-safari pioneer and TV regular Jean Du Plessis. Solar-powered mobile camp Usawa is designed to leave no trace. It was joined late last year by a second camp and, in July, will become part of a trio, all three easy to disassemble and use at any of the nine walking zones scattered across 9,173 square kilometres of park. The concept? Seamless private on-foot access to the Great Migration, Africa’s 1,900-kilometre odyssey of life, death and rebirth. Days at Usawa are a timeless tapestry of wild species amid endless vistas – from lions, giraffes, elephants and hippos to the mega-herds of wildebeests, zebras and elands; and the crocodiles and hyenas who lie in wait. Du Plessis’s knowledge of the terrain curates a Serengeti seemingly devoid of other humans. The six tents were designed by glamping pioneer Luxury Frontiers (Camp Sarika by Amangiri, Nayara Tented Camp) and cater for 12 around a central tent where campfire dining unfurls below sprawling, star-strewn skies. From the tents to the acacia-thorn light fittings, handblown glassware and ebony furniture, everything has been commissioned locally. While the animal kingdom runs through the barks and shrieks of its nightly playlist, guests enjoy a prime selection of mainly South African wines paired with international and regional treats, including the moreish Zanzibari urojo, a coconut- and dhal-rich spiced stew. North Island Okavango

If the name sounds familiar, that’s intentional. Similar to its Seychellois namesake, this retreat occupies its own island, is surrounded by wildlife and has all the starry qualities set to make it a dazzling success. Some of the team who worked on the lauded Indian Ocean launch more than two decades ago have since founded Natural Selection, the management company overseeing this, Botswana’s sexiest new lodge. Set in a community-owned concession on the edge of the Okavango Delta’s panhandle shared with only one other camp, North Island enjoys a degree of exclusivity – although game drives often meander into the neighbouring concession, where Natural Selection also manages Duke’s and Duke’s East. Wild dogs are among the top animal draws here, with several known active dens attracting the likes of BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit, which filmed a sequence for Planet Earth III in the delta area. Spearheading a new trend for micro-camps, the lodge has three suites (with a fourth to follow in March) that horseshoe around a lagoon, fanning from an open-front dining area and marble-topped help-yourself bar – an ideal gathering spot for multigenerational buyouts. Especially glorious at dusk, a decking area snakes into the lagoon, negating the need to head anywhere else for a sundowner, and there’s a well-equipped outdoor gym and hot tub. Shaded by ebony and jackalberry trees, the villas sit on elevated wooden platforms tickled by reeds, with plunge pools, outdoor showers and wraparound verandas perfect for watching elephants munch on fallen fruit. Sarah Marshall

True Travel offers three nights at North Island Okavango from $9,850 per person all-inclusive, with regional flights and transfers.

Onduli Ridge

Onduli Ridge

If the Flintstones were transported to Namibia, this is where they’d live: among the giant boulders of Damaraland in one of the least populated areas of the second-least populated country on earth. The landscape – part dry desert grasslands, part Mars-like miles of stone – is spectacular: scattered with rocks of all morphologies and colours, from black basalt to shards of glittering granite, and dotted with huge boulders and stunted, hardy trees. Ultimate Safaris’ Onduli Ridge sits on a neck between two inselbergs, with views from the rooms at dawn and dusk over wide, flat plains and, in the distance, the purply peaks of the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain range. Every room is spacious and set high up on a deck among the rocks. In some, the showerhead juts from a hunk of granite; in all, bathrooms are partly open to the hills and sky, and the bed can be wheeled onto the deck for stargazing. Ultimate Safaris is renowned for upskilling local workforces, and the cooks, trained from the community, turn out inventive and fresh food, from tapas lunches served on multilayered wooden platters to wood-fired pizzas cooked by the pool under the stars. Local attractions include the  Unesco-protected Twyfelfontein rock-art sites, the Doros Crater, created by a meteorite, a petrified forest and strange geological formations such as the Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain. Plus, if you’re very lucky, desert-adapted elephants and wild-roaming rhinos. Lisa Grainger

Angama Amboseli

Angama Amboseli

In a land where everything is big, the only option is to be bold. Africa’s tallest mountain and some of the continent’s last big tuskers set the scale for Angama’s new camp, close to Amboseli, one of Kenya ’s prime national parks. Here, 10 canvas-roofed suites arc around the base of Kilimanjaro, with bedside views of the semi-dormant volcano rising from a magical fever tree forest. Taking up exclusive residence in the community-owned Kimana Sanctuary, the camp is set on an ancient elephant migratory route, protecting an area increasingly under threat from agriculture. Built in partnership with NGO Big Life Foundation, which leases the land from Maasai communities, Angama’s first project outside the Mara has its biggest conservation focus to date, and the best place to get a grip on the story is the mushroom-shaped observation tower. Sink into a rocking chair with a sundowner and watch elephant herds parade across swamps while lights twinkle below Kili – a reminder of the challenges cohabiting humans and wildlife face. Every design detail of the camp pays homage to the elephants who regularly pass through: exterior walls are made from dung and concrete, curved surfaces resemble their physical form and textured table mats mimic their coarse skin. A proposed new road will make Amboseli National Park accessible within 30 minutes, although there’s enough wilderness and wonder inside the sanctuary. Along with game drives and elephant tracking on foot, this is a place to rest and relax; a safe haven for four- and two-legged guests. Sarah Marshall

Africa Travel can arrange a three-night stay at Angama Amboseli from $7,020 per person all-inclusive, with international flights and transfers.

Muzimu Gorongosa

Muzimu Lodge

For years, Gorongosa National Park offered basic rondavels and tents with the bare necessities, and a campground for the more intrepid. Those who visited the park – which has undergone a two-decade restoration – weren’t seeking private plunge pools; rather, the extraordinary nature and wildlife. Set at the southern tip of the Rift Valley, Gorongosa has a rich and varied landscape, its dense jungles and infinite savannah roamed by lions and wild dogs. But 2023 ushered in a new era of smarter hospitality with the opening of Muzimu, an intimate tented lodge connected via wooden walkways on the banks of a river bed. The property’s six canvas tents are simple and restrained, with locally made wooden headboards and desks, as well as pendant lights and lounge chairs in colourful printed fabrics. Their wooden decks overlook a thick tangle of palms and acacia trees. In the main spaces, extraordinary salads and home-baked breads created by local chef Vália Dimitri (who did a stint at The Pot Luck Club in Cape Town) are served at dining tables scattered across the deck. There’s also a giant fire pit for late-night stargazing and a tempting pool fringed with sunbeds for a post-drive dip. The traditional daily game drives seem almost mundane compared with the other excursions on offer: you’ll be up mountains; visiting local research labs and coffee plantations; on epic bike rides; and exploring deep limestone gorges and waterfalls. Fothergill

Fothergill Island

Lake Kariba is like an inland sea in Zimbabwe: a 1.38-million-acre man-made lake bordering Zambia, fed by the Zambezi river and surrounded by spectacular conservation areas. Two wildlife lovers took over Fothergill Island, within the remote Matusadona National Park, in 2019, and transformed it into the lake’s smartest camp, reopening it in 2021. The five one-bedroom canvas-walled suites, two two-bedroom suites and one three-bedroom private retreat are more like mini villas than rooms, most with an outdoor sala, plunge pool, ponds and pretty gardens protected by electrified elephant-proof fences. A practised team of staff serve modern multicultural cuisine, serious international wines and sundowners around a starlit boma and in upscale safari-style living and dining tents, with views over the pool and lake. The real treats, though, are the activities on land and water: game drives with sunny, well-read guides to track lions, elephants and buffaloes; bush breakfasts on sandy river beds over which gem-coloured sunbirds flit; sunset trips into river gorges teeming with hippos and giant crocodiles; and catch-and-release fishing excursions to try to snag the lake’s famously ferocious tigerfish. For the restless there’s a gym, yoga deck and running track; for children, archery, swimming and wildlife excursions with guides who ooze enthusiasm for this special wild spot. Fothergill has a landing strip for charters, and smart speedboats for whizzing to Kariba airport. Lisa Grainger

Khwai Lediba

Khwai Lediba

Striking the balance between creature comforts and adventure isn’t always easy. But African Bush Camps (ABC), helmed by Zimbabwean former guide Beks Ndlovu, has mastered the art of delivering smart, Champagne-popping safaris without compromising on the thrill of waking up in the wild. Its latest project, Khwai Lediba, in the Okavango Delta, is a prime example, bridging a gap between the company’s portfolio of high-end and expedition-style camps. Hidden in a quieter corner of Botswana’s community-owned Khwai concession – now booming with camps – it neighbours slightly more upmarket sister property Khwai Leadwood, opened by ABC in 2020. Both are a decent distance from the mobile campsites used by self-drivers and Khwai’s main airstrip, though a helicopter can provide faster transfers for an additional fee. Much closer is the Khwai River crossing into the Moremi Game Reserve, where most game drives happen, clocking up sightings of lions, leopards and wild dogs. When four-wheel fatigue sets in, walking safaris and breezy late- afternoon mokoro rides unfold in the concession. Elephants frequently pass quietly through, leaving telltale footprints on sandy paths leading to seven wooden-framed canvas tents, including one honeymoon suite and a family room, both with bathtubs. In the main sitting room, bright murals and thatch-woven lampshades foreground local artists. And shared dinners are the place for the local staff’s storytelling skills to shine. Sarah Marshall

Abercrombie & Kent offers three nights at Khwai Lediba from $5,436 per person all-inclusive, with international flights and transfers.

Swalus Loapi

Loapi Tented Camp

South Africa

Loapi is the newest and smartest addition to Tswalu, South Africa’s largest privately owned reserve, in the arid Kalahari. The reserve has been a 25-year passion project for the South African Oppenheimer family, involving three high-end properties, as well as land restoration and conservation initiatives focusing on animals such as rhinos, pangolins and meerkats. Loapi is the most ambitious arrival yet: a collection of six sustainable standalone homes with private house managers, chefs, guides and trackers. Gapp Architects’ striking glass, steel and canvas houses, spaced at least 165 feet apart, are self-sufficient and can be dismantled and moved, leaving the land untouched. Inside, interiors by Cape Town’s Gregory Mellor are flecked with mohair tapestries, clay sculptures, carved wooden panels and textured umber and cream sofas. But it’s all just backdrop for the main view of golden grassy plains and rust earth that bleeds into distant mountains and a cloudless, electric-blue sky. Tswalu is not for the first-time safarigoer who wants to see the Big Five all in one day. But those searching for rare pangolins or aardvarks, black and white rhinos, wild dogs and cheetahs, may be rewarded. At night, guests eat alfresco – a private chef prepares bright butternut salads, droëwors and biltong, tapas treats or cauliflower soup next to a roaring fireplace – so as to stay in nature. It’s big and bold, and, without another soul to be seen, invites introspection. Mary Holland

Red Savannah offers six nights in South Africa from $10,185 per person all-inclusive, with four nights at Loapi Tented Camp, including international flights and transfers.

1 night  Nairobi | 3 nights Masai Mara National Reserve | 5 nights Serengeti National Park | 2 nights Ngorongoro Crater

TAILORMAKE YOUR STAY

Talk to one of our travel specialists to tailormake you stay to any of our destinations

A taste of what to expect…

Day 1: nairobi.

  • On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be warmly welcomed by a member of the  &Beyond team, who will drive you to your hotel in vibrant Nairobi
  • Visits to Nairobi National Museum and an informative excursion to the Karen Blixen Museum are not to be missed (both at a additional cost)
  • Surrounded by vast acres of indigenous forest, the elegant Giraffe Manor is famous for its resident herd of giraffe, which casually wander around the hotel grounds. Beautifully furnished rooms include comfortable four-poster beds and well-appointed bathrooms

Day 2-4: Masai Mara

  • You will be driven to Wilson Airport, where you will board a flight to Kichwa Airstrip in the Masai Mara. On arrival, you will be welcomed by a member of the team from  &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp, who will drive you to the camp.
  • Experience the beauty of the Masai Mara on a hot air balloon flight (additional cost). Take off at dawn and float in whichever direction the morning winds take you. The flight lasts about an hour and is followed by champagne and a full English breakfast.
  • Game drives in the Masai Mara are unforgettable due to the abundance of wildlife and the spectacular landscapes. These may last from a couple of hours to the whole day, with a picnic breakfast and lunch

Day 5-6: Northern Serengeti, &Beyond Klein's Camp

  • Depart the Masai Mara on a flight from Mara Kichwa Airstrip to Nairobi Wilson Airport where you will connect on to a flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Kilimanjaro International Airport is the gateway to connecting to and from Tanzania. After clearing customs and immigrations, you will board a flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Serengeti Lobo Airstrip.
  • Escape the crowds on this private concession with access to the Serengeti. This strategic wildlife sanctuary borders the Serengeti, with wildlife moving through these areas. With only &Beyond vehicles on sightings, sensitive off-road driving, enables us to get closer to the game.
  • For those looking for an active thrill beyond the excitement of Big Five sightings on a game drive vehicle, a guided bush walk offers an opportunity to connect with the African bush, learning about its fascinating fauna and flora.
  • Add another dimension to your daily game drives and enter the world of Africa’s nocturnal predators on a thrilling night drive.

Day 7-9: Serengeti National Park, &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas

  • Drive back to the airstrip for a flight to  &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas
  • The luxurious tented camps of  &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas move around the park year-round, attempting to anticipate the movements of the Great Migration and exploring the remote and beautiful corners of the Serengeti with excellent resident game
  • Go on a game drive, game drives are tailored to suit your preference, with a choice between shorter, twice-daily drives or one full-day game drive, with a stop for a picnic lunch. The game drives are carefully planned to anticipate the progress of the Great Migration, so you should not have to travel too far to see the vast herds. However, if the Migration has moved off, or the dramatic river crossings are in progress, you may choose to spend more time on the vehicle in order to maximise your chances of seeing this incredible phenomenon.

Day 10-11: The Ngorongoro Crater in Northern Tanzania

  • Take a scheduled  flight to Manyara Airstrip where you will be welcomed by a member of the  &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge team, who will drive you to the lodge
  • The Ngorongoro Crater in Northern Tanzania, once a gigantic volcano, is the largest intact caldera in the world. Some maintain that before it erupted, it would have been higher than Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa.
  • Go on a game drive to search for endangered black rhino, giant tusked elephants wander the forests, big-maned lions and  flamingos which seasonally crowd the soda lakes. An estimated 25 000 large mammals are resident in this bowl of plenty, including a population of approximately 6 000 resident wildebeest, 16 highly endangered black rhino and around 70 lions. Cheetah move in and out of the Crater, while leopard are most often encountered in the spectacular Lerai Forest.
  • Book a Crater Floor Banquet, a gourmet feast served in one of the most unique settings in Africa. Descend into the scenic landscape of the Ngorongoro Crater and enjoy the incredible density of wildlife before making your way to a private picnic spot on the Crater floor

Day 12: Departure

Today, we wave a fond farewell. After a scrumptious breakfast, you will be collected for your flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport from Lake Manyara Aistrrip, where you will board your flight home

Conde Nast's Favorite African Destinations

Why condé nast's list of favorite african destinations matter.

Condé Montrose Nast was an American publisher, entrepreneur, and business magnate. He founded Condé Nast, a mass media company, now a subsidiary of Advance Publications, which publishes some of the world’s best-known magazine brands, including Vogue, Glamour, Gentleman's Quarterly, Architectural Digest, Wired, House & Garden, Conde Nast Traveller, Tatler and Vanity Fair.Known as a reputable publishing company, people from all over the world hold Conde Nast’s content and opinions in high regard; with highly influential brands raking in over 160 million consumers. One of their most successful magazines and most visited website is that of Conde Nast Traveller , which operates worldwide and has won 25 National Magazine Awards to date. Travelers who are interested in luxury travel, generally look to Conde Nast Traveller for accurate and unbiased advice on the best travel destinations, favorable accommodation options, and experiences not to be missed. It’s clear that Conde Nast is a trusted source when it comes to luxury travel. The travel writers report from the ground and showcase their pieces with incredible photography. It’s interesting to see which destinations manage to top the list, considering that the world is dotted with luxurious destinations and award-winning hotels and resorts. The competition is incredibly tight!

Conde Nast - Our Favourite African Destinations for a Safari

Botswana is a favorite African safari

abu camp, botswana

Elephants outside a room at Abu Camp, Botswana Botswana is one of Conde Nast’s favorite destinations for a safari and there are many reasons why. Botswana is known for its dense population of wildlife as well as an incredibly healthy birdlife - which means that wherever you stay you’ll be blessed with incredible sightings of both game, and rare bird species. Botswana is dotted with reserves and luxury 5-star lodges; each concession adding something special to your safari experience. Most concessions boast the likes of the big 5 and many species of mammal, and there are even some areas that are known specifically for certain types of game. For example, Abu Camp is known for the impressive number of elephants that live nearby, over and above the other species that call it home.

okavango delta

An elephant in the world renowned Okavango Delta, BotswanaThe Okavango Delta is one of the prime locations to help make Botswana a favorite African Safari as it’s the wettest part of the country - being one of the few water sources, the animals are attracted to this location, which means there’s a good chance that you’ll spot even the rarest of species. Although the Delta is the wettest area, there are a few other areas with water sources - and as they say 'where there is water there is life'. Other incredible locations which guarantee fantastic game viewings include Chobe National Park, Chief's Island and the Linyanti, Selinda and Kwando concession. Kenya is a favorite African safari

Amboseli Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Amboseli National Park gives you access to the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya.Kenya is home to the world-renowned reserve, the Masai Mara . The Masai Mara is famously known for being home to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth - the Great Mammal Migration. Over and above the estimated 2 million mammals that pass through the open plains during the months of July - September, the Masai Mara is known for its overabundance of wildlife. It certainly is a reserve immersed in life; from the wildlife to the birds and the fauna and flora. The Masai Mara, however, is not the only reason Kenya is one of the best destinations for a safari - it also has many other reserves which are known for their wildlife. Amboseli National Park for example, which is located near the Tanzanian border, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, contains a great number of elephant as well as cheetah, giraffe and zebra - and also boasts many a rare bird species. Other reserves with a varied range of wildlife include Nairobi National Park, Samburu National Reserve, Hell’s Gate National Park and Tsavo National Park. Tanzania is a favorite African safari

hot air balloon safari tanzania

A hot air balloon safari during the Great Migration is a once in a lifetime experience.Just like Kenya has the great open plains of the Masai Mara, so Tanzania has the great open plains of the Serengeti , which the mammals migrate to and from during the Great Mammal Migration . The Serengeti is another world-renowned reserve and is known as the oldest ecosystem on earth. This is yet another area which is deeply immersed in life - from birds to wildlife and a vast range of plant species. Ngorongoro Crater is another favorite in Tanzania; a crater which is known for being the world’s largest inactive and unfilled volcanic caldera. It is now an open piece of land that stretches out for miles and has become a breeding ground for many forms of life. Other fantastic locations in Tanzania for wildlife and birdlife sightings include; Tarangire National Park , Lake Manyara National Park, and Arusha.

Conde Nast’s List of the Most Beautiful African Destinations

South Africa is one of the most beautiful African Destinations

table mountain cape town

Table Mountain stands proudly in the center of Cape TownSouth Africa is without a doubt a magnificent corner of the globe - and it’s fast becoming one of the most popular destinations to travel in Africa and the world as a whole. With the likes of exquisite Cape Town under its belt, there’s no denying it is a country filled with natural beauty - even though there is more ‘city’ than there are open plains. South Africa is indeed more built up than the rest of Africa, however, you’ll be surprised by its hidden gems, which include the Winelands , the mountainous areas which include Table Mountain, Lions Head and the 12 Apostles; as well as the beaches, hiking trails and the private game reserves just outside of the city. Tanzania is one of the most beautiful African Destinations

tanzania beach

Tanzania's beaches are some of the best in AfricaThe Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the many beautiful National Parks and reserves that are scattered all over the country make Tanzania a favorite African destination due to its beauty, untouched and majestic beauty. Tanzania is a popular traveler destination in Africa due to its incredibly diverse ; from the open plains of the wilderness areas to the famous Mount Kilimanjaro - Africa’s highest mountain; and the tropical islands that lay offshore, it’s a fusion of extraordinary landscapes all found in one area. Tanzania is a natural masterpiece, and that's what makes it so moving. It is one of the few places on earth that have not been altered by man but has rather been left in its raw, faultless state. There’s no wonder Tanzania came in at number 8 in Conde Nast’s list of the 40 most beautiful countries in the world . Namibia is one of the most beautiful African Destinations

sossusvlei trees

One of Africa's most photographed scenes is the dead trees in the Sossusvlei. Namibia ’s vast range of red sand dunes makes this destination favorite African destination a rather magical one. Just when you thought Africa couldn’t get any more diverse, the Namib desert - with its bright colors and desert-like terrain certainly surprises us all - even Conde Nast! Namibia was a strong feature in their ‘Most Beautiful Countries in the World’, list. Although Namibia is not known for its wildlife per se, it has a high population of cheetah in certain areas - especially Etosha National Park ; as well as Oryx, Gazelle and Zebra. Namibia attracts those who are moved by awe-inspiring, rare landscapes and one certainly gets more than they’ve bargained for when they visit the likes of Sossusvlei , Swakopmund and The Skeleton Coast. Kenya is one of the most beautiful African Destination

kenya dhow safari

Dhow boat safaris are a favorite activity in Kenya. Kenya is one of the ultimate jewels of the African continent . It has made a name for itself for being the place where travelers can spot the river-crossing during the Great Mammal Migration. Over and above that soul-stirring sight, Kenya is packed with other glorious sights and experiences both in the many reserves as well along the coast where places like Mombasa, and Lamu are situated. Just like many of the other African destinations, so visit Kenya whether you’re looking for a safari in the wilderness or a beach getaway. The diverse activities available, beauty, numerous landmarks are probably the reasons why Kenya made it to number 15 in Conde Nast’s list of the 40 most beautiful countries in the world! After reading the travel reviews published by Conde Nast Traveller, perhaps you are feeling inspired to experience the magic of an African safari, making it an ideal time to contact Safari.com for expert travel advice and some great deals.

Africa's Best Kept Destinations

Celebrated as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, the South Luangwa National Park and the Luangwa River meandering through it are home to a rich ecosystem just waiting to be explored.

Victoria Falls, the Mosi oa Tunya, or the ‘Smoke that Thunders’, is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Perched on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, this roaring waterfall is a bucket list destination like no other.

The Kafue National Park is the largest and oldest park in Zambia, larger even than the Kruger National Park. One of the last great expanses of untouched wilderness in Africa, it is home to over 150 species of mammal and 500 species of bird… and almost no people at all.

Lake Malawi

The idyllic ‘inland sea’ of Malawi, this freshwater lake offers all manner of water-based activities. Also known as the Lake of Stars, Lake Malawi is a beach paradise with deep, clear waters and tropical cichlid fish. Likoma Island sits in the very heart of the lake.

For a mere five months each year a floodplain recedes into the mist in the Kafue National Park and leaves behind the lush Busanga Plains. This makes for some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing in the world; an Eden where there are more lions than travellers.

In the Lower Zambezi National Park, the mighty Zambezi River reigns supreme. As the lifeblood of the valley, the river nurtures a stunning array of wildlife, including four of the big five. Expect endless activity options, from canoeing days to sandbank lunches, long game drives to walking safaris.

Never Experience Africa The Same Way Twice

Experience Africa ghost text

First time safari-goers might ask why we decided to handpick destinations within Zambia and Malawi only. Our answer? Within these two countries, you can experience wildlife, scenery, and activities to rival any of the most famous safari destinations… and you won’t have to fight the crowds to do it.

Every day, Africa generously bestows us with exceptional gifts in the landscapes and wildlife we encounter. By protecting it through sustainable safari practices and conservation initiatives, we ensure that our home flourishes.

Waterside By Royal Malewane , South Africa

waterside lodge at royal malawane thornybush reserve

Entering one of Royal Portfolio’s hotels or lodges, you may well wonder whatever happened to classic safari khaki. Each interior is an exuberant collage of colors, textures, and contemporary African art handpicked by co-owner Liz Biden, whose design motto could well be “Let us entertain you.” The Waterside camp, on a large watering hole in Greater Kruger National Park’s private, game-rich Thornybush Reserve, may have clawfoot bathtubs in fire engine–red (and blue, and yellow), but Biden and her husband Phil aren’t playing around with what truly matters in the bush: their invariably crème-de-la-crème trackers and guides. —Klara Glowczewska

andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge, South Africa

suite bathroom in andbeyond's phinda forest lodge

One of Africa's first luxury safari lodges designed with eco-tourism front and center—seriously dedicated not just to turning a profit but also to supporting the environment, the wildlife, and the surrounding communities—just got a total makeover and is as beautiful to behold as it is elevating to experience. Located in the rare "sand forest" of Phinda Private Game Reserve ( ancient trees growing in sandy soil) in the province of KwaZulu Natal, its 12 stand-alone suites and public areas are have what can be described as a timeless Zulu-Zen style: organic minimalism (lots of wood and grasses) combined with the elegance of traditional Zulu craftsmanship. Pair the pampering (new pool, gym, spa, giant-birds-nest of a firepit, boma, restaurant, and bar) with the Big Five (or Six, or Seven, if you add a day trip to the beaches of the Indian Ocean) and you've got the safari of your dreams: close wildlife encounters (via vehicle, e-bike, or on foot, with expert guides), as well as participation in wildlife research projects with &Beyond's conservation team and visits to nearby Zulu communities with its partner organization, Africa Foundation. It's top level.

To book: Phinda Forest Lodge (and inquire as well with &Beyond , which is also a tour operator, about travel elsewhere in Africa.)

Loapi Tented Camp Tswalu, South Africa

dining deck at laopi tented camp tswalu south africa

These six safari “homes” of glass, steel, and canvas are your entree into another world: a vast stretch of the Kalahari desert being “re-wilded” by the diamond-mine-owning Oppenheimer family. The landscapes are staggering, the comforts total (a restaurant by a Michelin-starred chef, private butlers and trackers), and the experiences extraordinary: Loapi Tented Camp gives you the bush at its rawest, rock art, rhinos, and, if you’re lucky, the elusive, entrancing pangolins.

To book an African safari: Cherri Briggs of Explore, Inc. [email protected]

Angama Amboseli, Kenya

guest lounge at angama amboseli safari lodge, kenya masai mara

Talk about sense of place. In this 10-suite lodge from safari royalty Nicky Fitzgerald and her daughter Kate Fitzgerald Boyd (on a Masai-owned conservancy adjacent to elephant-rich Amboseli National Park), you’ll see snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro from everywhere, even reflected in the mirror behind your vanity. Bravo, too, to the Angama Amboseli's contemporary concrete, stone, and canvas aesthetic: as refreshing (no colonial vibe) as the sundowners.

To book an African safari: Jack Ezon at Embark Beyond [email protected]

JW Marriott Masai Mara, Kenya

jw marriott masai mara kenya twin tented room for families

A safari you can get with your Bonvoy points? Well, yes. No design envelopes are being pushed at the but it’s all an airy, surprising pleasure: A lounge, dining area, and firepit around a giant fig tree; pool and spa; and 20 well-appointed, roomy suites—a medley of neutrals and African decorative objects—along the Talek River. The piece de resistance: savanna sundowners under a lone acacia tree, glistening ice-buckets and all, staffed by red-clad Masai, whose families own this magnificent, Out of Africa land.

T o book: JW Marriott Masai Mara

Shinta Mani Mustang, Nepal

suite at shinta mani mustang, nepal

This stone-and-wood fortresslike structure with floor to ceiling windows atop a high Himalayan escarpment is the first luxury outpost in this remote and staggeringly beautiful region bordering on the Tibetan plateau. Designed by Bill Bensley, the impresario of remote Asian hotels, Shinta Mani Mustang offers a long menu of guided activities (such as hikes and rides to nearby villages, monasteries, and lakes); a wellness center run by a seasoned practitioner of Tibetan medicine; and huge terrace firepits, the perfect spot to be hypnotized by the play of light on the snow-capped peaks of the world’s highest mountains.

To book a trip to Asia: Catherine Heald of Remote Lands , [email protected]

Southern Ocean Lodge, Australia

southern ocean lodge kangaroo island australia pool lounge

One-hundred-mile long Kangaroo Island has been dubbed Australia’s Galapagos for the abundance of its protected wildlife (birds of every feather, sea lions, seals, koalas, wallabies, a breed of kangaroo that evolved only here, and more). Southern Ocean Lodge , its premier place to stay (and one of the first Luxury Lodges of Australia ), burned down in 2020 during the country’s catastrophic “black summer” wildfires and is finally back after a $36 million rebuild by its original architect, Max Pritchard. And better than ever.Poised atop Kangaroo Island’s dramatic limestone clifftops it resembles from the outside a long, low-flying saucer (the great room) with a long train (the 25 suites). Inside, it’s all curvy, cream-colored, glass-wrapped Midcentury Modern, designed to optimize those last-stop-before-Antarctica views over the Southern Ocean.

To book a trip to Australia: Stuart Rigg of Southern Crossings [email protected]

Puqio, Peru

puqio tented camp peru

The rugged Colca Canyon area, with its pre-Inca-descended inhabitants and Spanish colonial towns, has something completely new: Peru’s first African-style tented camp. The artwork and materials at Puqio are local, of course, and the suites have private terraces, wood-burning stoves, and outdoor tubs from which you can watch Andean condors circle in the sky. The camp provides another high-end alternative to the nearby Las Casitas, a Belmond property, though the approach here is very different—stylish but simple accommodations are paired with cultural, gastronomic, and adventure activities.

To book a trip to Peru (and elsewhere in South America): Paul Irvine at Dehouche [email protected]

Our Method: To compile this list of great-looking new hotels around the world, we followed not whimsy but rules: 1) They had to have opened no earlier than 2023. 2) They had to have been nominated by eithe r T&C ’s well traveled editors or our roundtable of 37 globetrotting travel advisors (preferably both). There were 172 nominees, and 53 made it through our vetting process. Bon voyage!

25 reasons to go to Moscow

By Condé Nast Traveller

25 reasons to go to Moscow

The Russian capital is a dazzling mix of medieval churches, Soviet skyscrapers, art galleries, sushi bars, nightclubs and bath-houses. Benjamin Wegg-Prosser selects its 25 most compelling attractions:

1. Turandot

It's easy to believe reports that US$40 million was spent on creating the interior of this restaurant. Spread over 14 rooms, it includes homages to Louis XVI, the Ming Dynasty and imperial Russia. The Asian fusion menu reflects the chinoiserie adorning the main dining room, whose centrepiece is a mechanical golden peacock that rotates as the all-female orchestra plays. The waiting staff wear uniforms that would not be out of place in a BBC costume drama. Tverskoy bul'var 26/5, Moscow (00 7 495 739 0011)

25 reasons to go to Moscow

St Basil's Cathedral

2. St Basil's Cathedral

The recently restored onion domes shine out from the top of the cathedral which marks the eastern border of the Red Square. Napoleon's troops ransacked the building, and it was once scheduled for demolition by Stalin. Today it's the jewel in the crown of the Russian Orthodox Church. The icons inside are well worth inspecting, but even better is the people-watching outside: young couples have their picture taken with the domes in the background on their wedding day. Krasnaya ploshchad (Red Square), Moscow (00 7 495 698 3304); open 11am-5pm, Wed-Mon

Graveyard of the fallen monuments

3. Graveyard of the fallen monuments

Ever wondered where the statues of Soviet heroeswere dumped when Communism collapsed? Many of them can be found in the grounds of the new Tretyakov gallery The most intimidating figure is that of Felix Dzerzhinsky, founder of the Cheka - the organisation that was to become the KGB. His statue was toppled in the aftermath of the failed coup of August 1991 and removed from Lubyanka ploshchad. At the State Tretyakov Gallery, 10 Krymsky Val, Moscow ( www.tretyakovgallery.ru ); open Tue-Sun, 10am-7.30pm

Golden Apple

4. Golden Apple

It calls itself a 'boutique hotel', but with 92 rooms the Golden Apple wouldn't get away with that description west of Warsaw. Given the size of most Moscow hotels, however, the title is deserved. The price of accommodation in the city is hard to stomach, but this one is one of few places where the rates can probably be justified. Five minutes from Pushkinskaya Square (the Piccadilly Circus of Moscow), it is very well located for discovering the city. [i]Malaya Dmitrovka 11, Moscow (00 7 495 980 7000; www.goldenapple.ru );

You'll understand how marking the defeat of Germany in 1945 has become a form of state religion when you visit this stunning museum dedicated to World War II. It's set at the heart of Park Pobedy (Victory Park) and includes an art gallery, a hall of remembrance and some fantastic exhibits. Highlights for any history buff include the Nazi declaration of surrender and the table and chairs used by Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill during the 1943 Tehran conference. Gorky's house

6. Gorky's house

Despite falling in and out with the Communist Party throughout his career, Maxim Gorky was one of the Soviet era's most important authors. He was rewarded with this stunning house when he returned to Moscow from exile in Italy. The Art Nouveau building was originally the home of Ryabushinsky, an oligarch who fled to France as the Bolsheviks took power. Visitors can see Gorky's study and admire the centrepiece of the house: a limestone staircase which seems to melt into the floor. Malaya Nikitskaya 6/2, Moscow (00 7 495 290 5130); open Wed-Sun.

Lenin's tomb

7. Lenin's tomb

Arguably the most influential political figure of the 20th century lies embalmed in a building that is most recognisable as the place from which Communist Party bosses used to watch military parades in Red Square. The authorities maintain that the body really is Lenin's and that its wax-like appearance is due to the embalming chemicals. His clothes are changed every few years so he keeps up to date with fashion, if nothing else. Krasnaya ploshchad (Red Square), Moscow (00 7 495 623 5527); open Tue-Thu; Sat-Sun

The Moscow metro

8. The Moscow metro

Spread across 180 stations, Moscow's underground rail system is a tribute to Soviet engineering and new Russian efficiency. With trains running every 90 seconds and the roads permanently clogged with traffic, the metro is the city's most practical form of transport. The earliest stations are architectural masterpieces, with Ploshchad Revolutsii, Kievskaya and Komsomolskaya really standing out. Visitors are advised to learn a little of the Cyrillic alphabet to help decipher the station names.

9. The State Tretyakov Gallery

These galleries - in two separate locations - house the best examples of Russian art from before and after the revolution. Most of the pieces in the old Tretyakov (at 10 Lavrushinsky pereulok) were in private hands before being nationalised in 1917. Its collection includes 'Rublev's Trinity', said to be the finest remaining Russian icon. The new Tretyakov (at 10 Krymsky Val) showcases all the main Russian art periods that followed the revolution and includes well-known works such as Petrov-Vodkin's Bathing of a Red Horse (pictured). Having opened after the financial crisis, this bar sets a more modest tone than its competitors. But it still manages a few superlatives, including stunning modern art and the longest bar in Moscow, at 30 metres. It's going after the forty-something market, or the 'mature hipster' as the management would have it. The bartenders are reputed to be the best in town. The owners took the brave decision to open this outpost of the Japanese restaurant at the apex of the financial crisis. They have been rewarded for their courage by securing it a reputation as the place for oligarchs to lunch. Since the fall of the USSR, Japanese food has become a staple diet for Muscovites, and the launch of Nobu was a natural next step. The company's owners had been fending off proposals for a Russian branch for more than a decade, so the restaurant's success is no great surprise. This Ultra-Luxury Cruise Whisks Travelers to 40 Countries in 5 Months

By Jessica Puckett

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Imagine spending nearly five months exploring the most fascinating destinations in the world while living in a lavish suite on a luxury cruise ship . From your suite’s private balcony, you can watch the ship pull into secluded islands and alluring ports in Asia, Europe, and Australia. All the while, you have unlimited access to gourmet dining—lobster, filet mignon, Champagne—with every need seen to by a solicitous crew.

It might sound like a travel fantasy, but this is the reality on board Regent Seven Seas’ new once-in-a-lifetime cruise voyage. The line’s just-announced 2027 world cruise will whisk travelers to 40 countries across six continents for an unforgettable adventure over the course of 140 nights.

The voyage is set to depart Miami, Florida , on January 11, 2027, and ends 20 weeks later in New York. Along the way, passengers will travel 35,668 nautical miles, cross 3 oceans, and visit 71 ports throughout the Caribbean, Australia , New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Asia, Africa, and Europe.

The destinations will offer travelers the chance to cross off their bucket lists a whopping 73 UNESCO World Heritage Sites , including natural and cultural wonders such as Australia’s Kakadu National Park, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, and the temples of Mumbai’s Elephanta Caves.

The itinerary offers 14 overnight port stays , so travelers can truly immerse themselves in destinations like Sydney, Australia; Bali, Indonesia; and Aqaba, Jordan. Plus, passengers can choose from more than 480 shore excursions that are included in the cruise fare. There will also be unique shoreside events for all guests in three ports, including a Carnival celebration in Panama City, Panama ; a street festival event in Colombo, Sri Lanka; and a Roaring Twenties-themed night in Málaga, Spain .

The Seven Seas Splendor has all-suite accommodations, each with an outdoor balcony, and can carry up to 746 guests.

Regent is offering the new itinerary as a growing number of travelers are becoming interested in lengthier cruise voyages . “We have seen continued interest and demand to venture further afield and for longer durations and so we are thrilled to announce that our 2027 World Cruise will take place on board Seven Seas Splendor , offering more luxury travelers the opportunity to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience” Andrea DeMarco, President of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, said in a statement.

During their twenty weeks at sea, passengers should be quite comfortable on board the Seven Seas Splendor . The ship holds just 746 guests and offers all-suite accommodations, each with an outdoor balcony. Splendor was launched in 2020, and it offers travelers an atmosphere of fresh luxury. Throughout the public spaces, you’ll find more than 500 crystal chandeliers, two pools, and even a $5 million art collection featuring Picassos and Mirós throughout the ship.

What’s more: Nearly everything on the ship is included in the cruise fare , including the nine restaurants. Among the dining options are specialty restaurants such as Pacific Rim, an Asian fusion concept, Chartreuse, upscale French dining, and Prime 7, a sophisticated steakhouse. Also included? Alcohol and premium beverages like fine wines and spirits.

Nearly everything on the ship is included in the cruise fare, including dining at nine onboard restaurants.

To sustain such luxurious meals, the ship will constantly be stocked with 13,000 pounds of lobster, 14,000 pounds of filet mignon, 3,600 pounds of smoked salmon, and 150 pounds of caviar. Plus, the ship’s bars will stock 58,000 bottles of wine—including 14,000 bottles of Champagne.

Also a part of the all-inclusive pricing is first-class airfare, unlimited valet laundry—including dry cleaning and pressing—and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Prices for the super-voyage, called “ The World of Splendor, ” start at $91,499 per guest for a 307-square-foot Veranda Suite and range all the way up to $839,999 per guest for the massive Regent Suite—a 4,443-square-foot space on the ship’s fourteenth deck with luxurious amenities like an in-suite spa, a personal sauna, a Steinway grand piano, 270-degree ocean views, large wrap-around veranda, and an in-suite Picasso on the wall. Regent says the rate for the Regent Suite is a record-breaking price for the industry.

If 140 nights at sea seems a bit too long, there’s also an option to participate in a shorter leg of the round-the-world adventure, which departs Miami but lasts 126 nights and ends in Rome.

Tickets for the epic world cruise go on sale April 10, 2024, but eager travelers can submit an early reservation request on Regent’s site.
