Visa-Free Travel To Malaysia For Indians From December 1. Details Here

Malaysia has become the fourth country, following Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Thailand, to announce visa-free entry for tourists.

Visa-Free Travel To Malaysia For Indians From December 1. Details Here

Malaysia is removing entry visa requirements for citizens of China and India.

The Malaysian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, has announced a significant policy change regarding entry visas for Chinese and Indian citizens. Starting from December 1, Malaysia is removing entry visa requirements for citizens of China and India . Prime Minister Ibrahim made this announcement during a speech at his People's Justice Party's annual congress in Putrajaya.

What will change for Indian travellers?

Visa Elimination: Indian citizens visiting Malaysia will no longer need entry visas starting from December 1.

Visa-Free Stay: Indians can stay in Malaysia for up to 30 days without obtaining a visa.

Security Screening: While visa requirements are lifted, there will still be security screening for Indian nationals visiting Malaysia.

Why did Malaysia take this step?

Prime Minister Ibrahim had previously revealed plans to enhance visa facilities in the coming year to further encourage the influx of tourists and investors, particularly from India and China.

China and India are crucial markets for Malaysia, ranking as the fourth and fifth-largest sources of tourist arrivals, respectively.

Between January and June of this year, Malaysia recorded a total of 9.16 million tourist arrivals, out of which India contributed 283,885 during the same period, solidifying its position as a substantial source of tourists for Malaysia.

The government is hopeful that by simplifying the entry process, it can attract more tourists and increase their spending within the country, thereby contributing to Malaysia's economic development.

From November 10, Thailand has removed the requirement for a visa for Indians, offering a generous 30-day stay. This policy is scheduled to remain in effect until May 10 of the following year, with the possibility of an extension based on demand, as indicated by the Thai government.

Sri Lanka has also adopted the visa-free entry initiative in October, for visitors from seven countries, including India, China, and Russia. Launched as a pilot project, this initiative took immediate effect and extends a warm welcome until March 31, 2024.

Johor ready for tourist surge

J OHOR BARU: The 30-day visa-free entry for Chinese and Indian nationals has provided a boost to local tourism, with the hotel association here saying it expected business to keep improving.

Malaysian Association of Hotels Johor chapter chairman Ivan Teo said more rooms were being booked for the festive season here.“With Singapore also implementing the same visa-free initiative for China, we expect to see more tourists from China crossing over to Johor during their visit to Singapore,” he said.

“Usually, Johor is rather quiet on Chinese New Year and the crowd will only be here in the days leading up to the festival.

“However, this year, we are seeing a lot of bookings for the first two days of the festival. This includes non-Chinese from Singapore who want to spend their holidays here,” he said.

Tourism Johor director Sharil Nizam Abdul Rahim said the move by the federal and state governments to improve public facilities would help in efforts to woo tourists.

“There are several ongoing projects initiated as part of our preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

“I believe the upgrades, coupled with the visa-free initiatives, will allow us to see more tourists coming to Malaysia,” he said.

Malaysian Tourist Guides Council president Jimmy Leong said the 30-day visa-free initiative for China and India, which kickstarted last December, has yet to result in a surge in arrivals from both countries.

“A possible factor could be because there are segments of tourists from both countries who are still recovering from the economic impact of the pandemic.

“Besides, other countries in the region are also offering visa-free programmes to these tourists. So while we have joined the trend, we also have to compete with the others,” he said.

Leong said in previous years, Chinese New Year was the period when industry players would see a spike in the number of tourists, mainly from China.

“We should have already seen a large crowd coming from China by now. We have told the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry that we are prepared to assist if the need arises,” said Leong, who is also the Johor Tourist Guides Association chairman.
