How To Draw India

Let’s be honest – India is a vast, ancient, and really beautiful country. Rendering it in a drawing is going to be intimidating to some, but don’t worry! It doesn’t have to be complicated – you don’t need to be a professional artist to make a gorgeous sketch of India. So let’s dive right in and show you how to draw this amazing country.

Step 1: Start with the Outline of the Indian Subcontinent

Start by drawing an outline of the Indian subcontinent – it’s easy! Think of it like a large triangle, with its tip pointing towards the north and its legs extending down to the bottom. Use a pencil to draw the basic outline, and then you’ll be ready to start adding some details.

Step 2: Start Drawing in Some of the Major Landmarks

Now you can start adding in some of the major landmarks in India. Start with the most famous one – the Taj Mahal. Then draw the outline of the Himalyas in the far north, and the Ghats in the south. You can add in the other mountains, the rivers, and any other landmarks that you’d like.

Step 3: Add in Some Color

Now it’s time to start adding some color to your masterpiece. Use colored pencils, paints, or whatever medium you’d like to add some life to your drawing. Start with the ocean, and then color in the Himalayas and the Ghats with a bit of green and brown. You can also add in some deep reds and yellows to depict the deserts, or some blue colors to represent the cities.

Step 4: Finish Up

How To Draw India

When you’re satisfied with the colors you’ve added, you can start finishing up your drawing. Try to add in some little details like trees or clouds to make it extra special. And then go over the entire drawing with some white chalk, to help give your creation some texture. And that’s it! You’re now done with your drawing of India.

Step 5: Show Off Your Masterpiece

Now that it’s finished, it’s time to show off your work of art! You can proudly hang your drawing up in your room, or share it with your friends. You can even frame it, if you’d like. So go ahead and show off your amazing drawing, and you’ll surely get some compliments from everyone who sees it.

Step 6: Practice and Improve

Drawing India is no easy task, but with some practice and patience, you’ll be able to hone your skills and make your drawings even better. Try out different techniques, explore different mediums, and experiment with different colors. You’ll soon be an India drawing pro, and you’ll be able to draw this amazing country in no time!

India's general shape is very similar to that of a kite, with its border made of lots of different curved lines. To draw the general outline, you'll need a ruler and pencil to make the first marks. Give your map some necessary details by adding the curved edges of the border, marking the main cities, and drawing the important landmarks. With some practice, you'll be able to draw the map of India in no time!

Example Map

Step 1 Read the guide below to learn how to draw this map!

Forming the Outline

Step 1 Use a ruler...

  • For your line to be off-center slightly, begin drawing it roughly two-fifths of the way across the top of the page.
  • Draw the line lightly so that you can erase it later on.

Step 2 Make a dot on your line at the 4.5 cm (1.8 in) mark.

  • Your lines will form a rough cross shape.

Step 4 Orient the ruler diagonally going from the top left to the bottom right.

  • Once you’re finished, your new line will slope straight downwards.

Step 6 Make a diagonal line going in the opposite direction.

  • This line should form the other half of an "X" shape from the first diagonal line.

Step 7 Use the sketched lines as a guide for where to draw the edges.

  • While India will have lots of complex curves when you draw it in detail, this is its simplified shape.

Step 8 Use curved lines to create the border of India.

  • For example, the bottom portion of India looks like a V shape while the portion of India farthest to the left looks like a backwards 3. While these are the simplified shapes of each section, they all have small curves.

Adding the Details

Step 1 Draw the states and union territories of India to show boundary lines.

  • When figuring out how large or small to draw each state, use the eraser on your pencil or the tip of your finger as a measuring tool. For example, you might measure and find out that the length of India is 27 pencil erasers, and the first state that goes along this length is 3 pencil erasers long.
  • If desired, label each state after you’ve drawn them all in, writing each state’s name. For example, you might label Andhra Pradesh, which is on the coast of India to the southeast, or Punjab, which is towards the northernmost tip of India.

Step 2 Create dots or stars to mark the main cities in India.

  • Kolkata is located near the eastern tip of India, and Bangalore is in the middle of the bottom tip of India.
  • Hyderabad is roughly three-quarters of the way down the middle of India going vertically.

Step 3 Illustrate the topography of India to show land contours.

  • For example, color in the Himalayan mountains area, which is the northernmost point of India, a dark purple to show a very high elevation.
  • The entire coast of India with the exception of the Himalayan mountains is a very low elevation.
  • The middle of India and the southernmost area of India both have mountain ranges of average elevation.

Step 4 Draw small pictures to show important landmarks.

  • Consider putting the pictures of the landmarks in a key to the side of your map so you don’t need to write the names of each landmark directly on the map.
  • For example, you might draw a simple outline of the Taj Mahal and place it 1–2 cm (0.39–0.79 in) above the center of India.

Step 5 Label any rivers or oceans to show the bodies of water.

  • You might label the Arabian Sea to the left of India, the Bay of Bengal to the right of India, and the Indian Ocean at the bottom of India.
  • The Ganges river flows diagonally along the upper right section of India.
  • The Narmada, Tapti, Krishna, and Kaveri rivers all flow horizontally across India.

Step 6 Make a key for your map so people can read it easily.

  • In your key you might draw a picture of the Taj Mahal and write “Taj Mahal” next to it, or draw dotted lines and write “state boundary” next to it.

Step 7 Color your map to make states, landmarks, or bodies of water stand out.

  • For example, color the states using colors like red, yellow, purple, and green.

To draw the map of India, draw a large square on a piece of paper, then lightly draw 3 vertical lines to divide the square into quarters, and number them 1-4 from left to right. Draw a horizontal line to divide those quarters into top and bottom sections. Use these guidelines to help you as you sketch the map. The largest portion of India will be drawn in the top and bottom halves of the second section, with the majority of eastern India residing in the third section. If you are drawing to scale, small sections should extend into the first and fourth sections as well. To learn how to mark the 29 states and 7 union territories, read on! Did this summary help you? India is a land of many identities, each exquisite in its own way. From Kashmir valleys to the ocean depths at Kanyakumari, the country diverges into an array of cultures and traditions. In spite of harnessing such diversity, we find unity in the art our land festers. Art has been a prevalent form of expression and communication right from prehistoric times. In fact, every community uses its own individual style of art to represent it’s cultural traditions. The tribal communities of India are known for their repository of creative arts. Indulging in these indigenous art forms is agreeably the best way for art enthusiasts to explore the heterogeneity of Indian culture. So here we bring to you a list of 10 tribal art forms from India, for beginners to scout.

Warli Folk Art

Warli art originates from the North Sahyadri range of Maharashtra, tracing back to the 10th century A.D. This classic tribal art form was born from the artistic pursuits and need for traditional preservation of the tribal community. The gifts of nature and wildlife have a strong influence on Warli art. Owing to this influence, simple geometric shapes are used to depict elements of nature and mankind. Additionally, the picturization of their tribal dance – ‘Tarpa’ is a prominent feature. Formerly, the Warli only used their ochre-red clay huts as a canvas for their paintings. The tint for painting is a liquid mixture of rice flour, water and gum. Warli paintings are a means of passing on the tribe’s traditions and folklore for generations to come.

Santhal Paintings

This style of art belongs to the Santhal tribe populated in the bordering states of East India. Santhal paintings are another effortless and alluring form of tribal art. They are a fine representation of the everyday life of the tribe. Made with tints derived from natural elements, Santhal paintings are vibrant, lively and conform to no particular colour palette. They bring out the integration of humans and nature with enchanting depictions of farming, fishing, hunting and merry making. Contemporary artists use synthetic colours to create the paintings on scrolls and cloth. In essence, Santhal art is minimalistic and enchanting to say the least.

A hidden gem found adorning the hut walls of tribal villages in the Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand. Khovar art is a unique style of tribal paintings, practiced primarily by the women (Mother-in-laws & Daughter-in-laws) of the region. The word ‘Khovar’ stems from two words – ‘Kho’ (cave) ‘Var’ (husband). In effect, Khovar art is a ritual followed by the tribal women during their marriage season. The women paint captivating motifs on their hut walls to create exquisite murals.‘Dhudhi mitti’ (white in colour), ‘lal mitti’ or red oxide, ‘kaali mitti’ or manganese black and ‘peeli mitti’ or yellow ochre mixed with water and gum are used as the paint. Notably, intriguing tools such as broken combs, cloth swabs and twig brushes are used to create Khovar paintings. Wildlife has a strong influence on Khovar art. It is seen as a sign of celebration and good luck with marital and sexual symbolism.

Pithora Tribal Art

tribal art, tribal art forms, indian tribal art

Pithora art is more of a ritual than recreational art. The Rathwa, Bhil, Nayak and Tadi tribes of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh practice this tribal art form. The tribes perform this ritual as a way of thanking god or for seeking the fulfillment of a wish. Traditionally, only the men of the tribe create the motifs. They use a mix of sprightly natural and synthetic colours to create the paintings. Moreover, this form of tribal art is characterized by painting the wall at the threshold of the house and its adjacent walls. The walls are first layered with cow dung and chalk powder and then worked upon. The art work illustrates their tribal activities and strong mythological beliefs. Prominent elements in Pithora art are figures of deities, horses, the sun and the moon. In it’s contemporary form, artists now create Pithora on cloth, canvases and cardboard.

Phad Painting

Phad paintings are a 700 year old legacy originating in Shahpura, Rajasthan. It is a style of scroll painting that alludes to the folklore and religious stories of the local deities, especially – ‘Pabuji’ and ‘Devnarayan’. Phad is a form of storytelling for the local priests who unveil the Phads and accompany it with song and dance to narrate the stories of their deities. The paintings entail brilliant attention to detail. Phads are made on hand woven cotton cloths stiffened with starch. Vivid hues derived from flowers, leaves, mud and stones make the paint for the art. Overall, it is the intricate detailing in this tribal art form that makes it stand out.

Gond art is native to the Gond tribal community, inhabited in Madhya Pradesh. An age old practice, Gond art is their sacred form of preserving the cultural heritage of their tribe. The paintings unveil stories around the life of the tribal people and the deities they worship. They also recreate scenes from the popular myths and legends of India. A distinguishing factor is the use of geometrical lines, spirals and dotted lines in tune with human figures and elements of nature. Each piece of art has a unique sense of movement. Naturally extracted vivid colours are used as dyes for the paintings. Like most other tribal art forms, in modern times Gond art has shifted from traditional wall paintings to paper and canvas with the use of synthetic paint.

Paitkar Paintings

Paitkar paintings are a form of scroll painting hailing from tribal communities in Jharkhand. The culture and ethnicity of their neighbouring state – West Bengal, shape the undertones of the art. These paintings are popular for their representations of the eminent Indian epics like the Ramayan and Mahabharata. Consequently, figures of deities and humans predominate the artwork. These figures are created with elongated eyes for dramatic effect. Paitkar artists only use natural dyes mixed with a special gum derived from the Wood Apple tree. As a result, the paintings are rich in primary colours and neutral muted shades.

Bhil Tribal Art

tribal art, tribal art forms, indian tribal art

Bhil Art belongs to the second largest tribal community in India – the Bhil tribe. Their primeval art is rather distinct. Bhil paintings use large unlife-like figures and shapes painted in natural and earthy tones. In essence, their art portrays the life of the Bhil tribe and their natural environ. Then the painted figures are overlaid with various dotted patterns. These patterns give the Bhil paintings a uniqueness of their own. Moreover, the dotted patterns symbolise various rituals and beliefs of their tribe and have an individuality owing to their artists.

Saura Painting

tribal art, tribal art forms, indian tribal art

Saura painting finds its roots in Odisha’s Saura tribe. These paintings hold close visual resemblance to Warli art. Yet, they have stark differences in terms of the style and treatment of the art work. Saura paintings, also known as ‘Ikons’ draw immense inspiration from Indian mythology. The tribe dedicates the art to their deity ‘Idital’. Dyes extracted from ground white stone, tamarind seeds, vermillion, flowers and leaves are used to create the wall murals. The artists use frayed bamboo brushes to paint concentric geometric patterns and stick figures. In contrast to Warli art, Saura paintings don’t follow physical differences in denoting male and female figures.

Kalamezuthu

tribal art, tribal art forms, indian tribal art

A popular form of tribal temple art in Kerala, Kalamezuthu is a fascinating style of art expression. The artwork of this school adorns temple floors as a ritual and means of pleasing the presiding deity. The art follows a focused linear pattern – from top to bottom. Kalamezuthu artists use white rice powder to outline the design and fill in the colours with turmeric, charcoal powder and red manjadi powder. Significantly, the artwork consists of figures of various Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

India Design System aims to be an exhaustive catalogue of freely downloadable signage ranging from government logos to common public symbols, hospital signages, and traffic signs that are essential to social infrastructure in India. Why should the traffic sign for U-turn be different in different Indian states? Why do people stretch Aadhar logos to use in their presentations? Why don't we have a common design language and system in our country. Our endeavour is to help make the task of designing for the people in India, easy and time-saving for designers and creative professionals, consultants, printers and agencies designing communication material for public. This database, available in scalable templates for commercial and non-commercial use, is developed by Bombay Design Centre. Our mission is to design a better India. Learn more about us .

5 Simple Steps to Draw an Indian Easily: A Beginner's Guide

1. gather your materials, sketch pencils, drawing paper, colored pencils, 2. learn basic shapes, 3. start drawing the outline, draw the head, draw the body, draw the arms, draw the legs, 4. fill in the details, draw the eyes, draw the nose, draw the mouth, draw the clothing, 5. color your drawing, color the skin, color the eyes, color the clothing, color the background.

If you've always wanted to sketch a portrait but felt overwhelmed, don't worry. We're going to break it down into manageable steps, making it easy to draw an Indian figure. This guide is perfect for beginners and will make drawing feel less intimidating and more enjoyable. So, grab your sketching tools and let's get started.

Before we dive into drawing, it's important to have the right tools at your disposal. This will make the process smoother and the end result more satisfying. Here's what you'll need:

Sketch pencils are your main tools for this task. They come in a variety of hardness levels. A good starting set for a beginner includes soft pencils like 2B, 4B, or 6B for shading and a harder pencil like 2H for creating outlines. Remember, don't press too hard with the pencil—let the pencil do the work for you.

Don't forget a good quality eraser. This isn't just for correcting mistakes—it's also a drawing tool in its own right. You can use it to lighten areas of your drawing, create highlights, or clean up your outlines. A kneaded eraser is a great choice as it can be molded to fit your needs.

The choice of paper is just as important as the choice of pencils. You'll need a good quality drawing paper that can handle the pressure from your pencil without tearing or smudging. Look for a medium weight paper—like a sketch pad, which has a slight texture that helps grab the graphite from your pencil.

Lastly, you'll need colored pencils to bring your drawing to life. There are many brands to choose from. You'll want a set that offers a wide range of colors, including various shades of skin tones for your easy to draw Indian figure. Prismacolor or Faber-Castell are good options for beginners.

Now that we've got all our materials ready, let's move on to the next step—learning the basic shapes. This will be the foundation of our drawing.

Every drawing starts with basic shapes. These shapes help you to structure your drawing and maintain proportion. By breaking down a complex figure into simpler shapes, it becomes much easier to draw an Indian—or any figure, for that matter. Let's explore these foundational shapes.

Let's start simple. The circle is a key shape in drawing the human figure. It's used most prominently for the head but can also be used to sketch the joints. Practice drawing circles of different sizes. Remember, no need to get it perfect—your circle doesn't need to be the next Pieta.

An ellipse, or an elongated circle, is useful for representing 3D shapes on a 2D surface. This shape will come in handy when drawing parts of the body viewed at an angle, like the arms or the torso. The secret to drawing a good ellipse? Keep your hand loose and let it flow.

The rectangle is another essential shape in figure drawing. It helps create the main body structure, like the torso and limbs. These rectangles can be long, short, wide, or narrow, depending on the perspective. So, grab that 2H pencil and sketch out a few rectangles. See? You're already getting the hang of this easy to draw Indian figure.

Last but not least, the humble triangle. This shape is useful for sketching the nose, the shape of the face, or the folds in clothing. It's all about noticing where these shapes appear in the human body. So, keep your eyes open and your pencil ready.

With these basic shapes under your belt, we can start constructing our Indian figure. Ready to move on to the next step?

Now that you've mastered the basic shapes, it's time to start sketching the outline of your Indian figure. Just remember, every great piece of art starts with a simple sketch, so don't fret if your drawing doesn't look like a masterpiece just yet. We're focusing on making it easy to draw an Indian figure and having fun in the process. So, let's get started!

Start by drawing a circle for the head. Keep it simple—there's no need for intricate details at this stage. Remember that circle practice from earlier? Time to put it to use! Just draw a simple circle for the head, and we'll add features later on.

Now, let's tackle the body. Draw a rectangle beneath the head to represent the torso. The length and width of this rectangle will determine the overall proportions of your Indian figure. No pressure, just keep it roughly in proportion to the head.

Next up? Arms. Draw two ellipses extending from the upper part of the torso. Remember, these are just the underlying shapes—don't worry about muscles or details just yet. And if it helps, imagine you're drawing the arms of a beloved action figure or doll.

Lastly, let's draw two more rectangles for the legs. Position them directly beneath the torso and try to keep them roughly the same length for balance. You're well on your way to creating an easy to draw Indian figure!

Now that we have the basic outline, it's time to add some details. Are you excited to proceed to the next step?

With the basic outline finished, let's dive into the details that will transform these shapes into an easy to draw Indian figure. If you're thinking, "Wait, am I really doing this?" Yes, you are! And you're doing great. So, let's keep going.

Let's start with the eyes. Draw two ellipses within the circle that forms the head. Position them where you think the eyes would naturally be. There's no perfect way to do this, so feel free to experiment! After all, each artist has their own unique style.

Now, for the nose. Draw a smaller ellipse in the middle of the circle. You can make it as wide or narrow as you want. Remember, this is your drawing, and it's your unique interpretation of an easy to draw Indian figure.

Next, let's draw the mouth. This can be as simple as a curved line beneath the nose. You can also add a smaller line beneath it to indicate the lower lip. Again, remember that we're going for simplicity here.

Finally, let's draw the clothing. Indian attire is diverse and beautiful, so this is a chance to have some fun. You could draw a simple kurta and dhoti, or go for a saree if you want a challenge. Just remember to keep it simple and follow the outline of your figure.

There you have it! You've filled in the details and your easy to draw Indian is starting to come alive. Ready to add some color?

Alright, let's move on to the final step—coloring. This is where your easy to draw Indian truly comes to life. Grab your colored pencils and let's add some hues!

First, let's color the skin. Choose a shade that feels right to you. Indian skin tones vary greatly, so there's no single correct choice. The only rule here is to color within the lines you've drawn. Or hey, go outside the lines if you feel like it—this is your masterpiece, after all!

Next, let's move to the eyes. Brown is a common color for Indian eyes, but you can choose whatever color you like. Remember, this is your interpretation. Don't forget to leave a small white spot for the reflection that adds life to the eyes.

Now, let's color the clothing. Here's where you can really have fun! Indian attire is known for its vibrant colors and beautiful patterns. You could go for a simple solid color, or dive into intricate patterns. Go with what feels right for your easy to draw Indian.

Finally, let's color the background. This part is entirely up to you. You can either choose a simple color to keep the focus on your figure, or create a vivid landscape. Whichever you choose, make sure it complements your easy to draw Indian.

And voila! You've just created your own easy to draw Indian masterpiece. See, that wasn't too hard, was it? With practice, you'll get even better. So, what are you waiting for? Grab those pencils and start drawing!
