Stoke travel agent calls on the government to save the industry

Fifteen months of shut down has put the sector on the brink of collapse

Workers in the travel industry across Staffordshire and Cheshire say it's time for the government to be clear on why their industry is still shut, fifteen months on.

An announcement is expected later today - as pressure mounts on ministers to expand the green list and relax restrictions on foreign trips.

Andy Dean is the co-owner of Oasis Travel in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. He said:

"You can buy a pint from a pub, whether you're outside or inside, we can't sell anything, we can't sell holidays, we can't sell business travel, you can sell, obviously, if you England breaks, things like that, but there's nothing that we can do to start our industry back off.

"We just want to be fair, we have no support, really at all, and no other industries have been hit and things bought. People are open now and we can't sell anything.

"There's nothing that we can do to start our industry back off. We're way in front of what we need to be to allow people to get out of the country and with no need for quarantining, there's definitely no need for in my view for any, you know, PCR test, restricting travel and so on. When you actually take the time to look at the data as people have been putting on, it makes for a terrible reading from the government's point of view for the general public. We're way in front of what we need to be to allow people to get out of the country and with no need for quarantining.

"We just want you know, to be heard of where travel is and the needs to get people moving again, not just in the retail industry, you know, business people as well. families need to go abroad, see the families, people buying houses, doing work, a lot of different things, and that's what I travel is really needed at the minute"

Recap: Traffic gridlock across Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire as snow strikes

First Potteries is waring of disruption

  • Updated 21:51, 19 JAN 2023

radio stoke travel news

Motorists are facing gridlock across North Staffordshire this afternoon after the area was struck by heavy snow. A number of side roads have been hit hard while key routes all over Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding areas have been virtually brought to a halt.

Drivers are already reporting problems all over the city, including through Baddeley Green, Smallthorne, Norton Green, Endon, Hanley, Bentilee, Werrington and Chell Heath. And one motorist trying to get through Cheddleton this morning called Radio Stoke to describe the situation as 'absolute chaos - I'm going nowhere'.

Yesterday saw a number of the main roads hit by snow but traffic was still able to move - however today the heavier snow fall appears to have brought bumper-to-bumper gridlock.

Politics latest: 'Exhausted by psychodrama': Senior Tory says mood in party is 'terrible'

"The PM's authority is shot, but there is no big move against him," is how political editor Beth Rigby summarises the current mood in the Tory party.

  • Beth Rigby:  Most Tory MPs have 'lost the will to live' - but no big moves to remove PM afoot
  • Johnson will likely campaign for allies in general election - but no sense he'll help Sunak
  • Tory donor who made Abbott comments 'not racist', minister insists
  • Party willing to accept another £10m from donor
  • What you need to know about Frank Hester and what he's reported to have said
  • Serena Barker-Singh:  A day with Labour MP reveals how she constantly has to think about her safety
  • Live reporting by Ben Bloch

Businessman Frank Hester has been widely condemned after the emergence of comments he allegedly made about Diane Abbott.

Hackney MP Ms Abbott has since responded, saying the Tory donor's reported comments had put her in a "frightening" position.

But who is Mr Hester and what is he alleged to have said about Ms Abbott?

How Mr Hester made his fortune

The 58-year-old healthcare entrepreneur is founder and chief executive of The Phoenix Partnership (TPP).

Based in Leeds, TPP describes itself as "a leading global provider of healthcare technology".

It says it provides "vital clinical IT services in... more than 2,600 GP practices".

During the pandemic, it was reported to have won a six-figure contract to supply data on vaccine uptake levels.

Mr Hester, who was awarded an OBE in 2015 for services to healthcare, made last year's Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated fortune of £415m.

He was a computer programmer when he founded TPP in 1997 and was listed as one of the UK's top 50 innovators in the national health publication Health Service Journal in 2013.

Huge donations to the Tories

Mr Hester donated £10m to the Tories last year, including a £5m donation to Rishi Sunak that came from him personally and another £5m that came from his healthcare software firm in November, Electoral Commission records show.

His ties to the party go back a long way.

In 2013, he travelled to India with David Cameron, the then-prime minister, as part of what was Britain's biggest-ever trade delegation.

The following year, Jeremy Hunt, the then health secretary, visited TPP's headquarters.

What were his alleged remarks about Ms Abbott?

According to The Guardian, Mr Hester made remarks about Ms Abbott in 2019 during a meeting at his Leeds company headquarters.

In an article published on Monday, the publication reported he said: "It's like trying not to be racist but you see Diane Abbott on the TV, and you're just like… you just want to hate all black women because she's there.

"And I don't hate all black women at all, but I think she should be shot."

How has Mr Hester responded?

A spokesperson for the entrepreneur released a statement saying: "Frank Hester accepts that he was rude about Diane Abbott in a private meeting several years ago but his criticism had nothing to do with her gender nor colour of skin.

"The Guardian is right when it quotes Frank saying he abhors racism, not least because he experienced it as the child of Irish immigrants in the 1970s."

It added: "He rang Diane Abbott twice today to try to apologise directly for the hurt he has caused her, and is deeply sorry for his remarks.

"He wishes to make it clear that he regards racism as a poison which has no place in public life."

How Ms Abbott responded

In her own statement, Ms Abbott, the UK's first black woman to become an MP, detailed how "alarming" the alleged remarks were in light of the murder of two politicians since 2016.

"It is frightening," said Ms Abbott. "I live in Hackney and do not drive so I find myself, at weekends, popping on a bus or even walking places more than most MPs.

"I am a single woman and that makes me vulnerable anyway. But to hear someone talking like this is worrying."

She added: "For all of my career as an MP I have thought it important not to live in a bubble, but to mix and mingle with ordinary people. The fact that two MPs have been murdered in recent years makes talk like this all the more alarming."

PM's spokesperson initially refuses to call reported comments racist

Asked about the reported remarks at a regular briefing with journalists on Tuesday, Rishi Sunak's spokesman said they were "clearly unacceptable", but refused to say if they were racist.

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride also told broadcasters the comments were "inappropriate", but added: "I think the critical point here is I don't think what he was saying was a gender-based or a race-based comment."

Conservative MP and former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, however, said that the reported comments were "clearly racist and sexist".

Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch broke ranks on Tuesday, becoming the first minister to say the alleged comments were "racist", but added there should be "space for forgiveness".

Then a statement from Number said the PM thought the reported comments were "racist and wrong".

Calls for funds from Mr Hester to be returned

Sir Keir Starmer, London mayor Sadiq Khan and other political opponents of the Tories have demanded that the party return the money Mr Hester donated.

Business minister Kevin Hollinrake was asked on Sky News this morning if the party was "content to spend" Mr Hester's money, to which he replied: "Well, on the basis he's not a racist and has apologised for what he said, yes."

By Victoria Seabrook , climate reporter

What exactly has the government announced about gas power? Actually rather little.

It said the UK needs to build some new gas capacity, partly to replace old plants, and partly to provide back up in case renewable power is intermittent.

That was long assumed to be the case, and Labour has said it might do the same too - so why the big fuss?

Since the summer, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been carving out a divide between the Tories and Labour over climate action, ahead of the upcoming general election.

Remember when he decided licences for new North Sea oil and gas projects should be given out annually ? And the regulator pointed out it pretty much does that anyway.

Or in September when he pledged to be more "proportionate and pragmatic" on net zero?

But his rhetoric perhaps did more harm than the tinkering.

Given yesterday's announcement was also thin on detail, it seems to follow suit.

In that sense the government's announcement on gas has so far been much ado about little that is new.

But there is something else in the announcement that could impact household bills far more.

The government is proposing wholesale electricity prices could vary by region.

"I get called far-left, I get called far-right, depending on who I'm having a conversation with," Sarah Carter tells me.

We're standing in a self-assembled shack outside RAF Scampton, a disused air base in Lincolnshire, once home to the Dambusters.

For the last year, she - and others - have been protesting against a Home Office plan to house 2,000 asylum seekers in portable cabins on the airfield.

She stays here for days at a time, swapping over with friends to make it a permanent protest site, and has just taken delivery of a new double bed when I visit.

Still, it's cold, and the traffic that thunders past makes conversation hard.

Sarah is a Scampton local who found others from out of town trying to co-opt their cause - the organised far-right.

If you're a regular viewer of Sky News Breakfast, you will have seen that Labour's Jonathan Ashworth placed a £10 bet with presenter Kay Burley last week that the general election will take place May.

Mr Ashworth doubled down on the bet this morning with presenter Wilfred Frost, with proceeds going to the National Association of Children of Alcoholics.

He added on a serious note that the Tory party has "just announced a big £46bn unfunded tax change", which is the pledge to scrap national insurance entirely at some point in the future.

"That suggests to me that there are preparing for an election," he said.

"They need to tell us where the money is coming from to fund that," Mr Ashworth said, also questioning how the government will sever the link between national insurance payments and the state pension.

As a result of the proposal, he said: "I do think an election is coming, and I think we'll be asking... serious questions of Rishi Sunak on his £46bn unfunded plan."

Over the last few days, newspapers friendly to the Conservative Party have been reporting that Boris Johnson will come back and help Rishi Sunak campaign at the general election.

As you probably know, the two men had a spectacular falling out in 2022, with Mr Sunak resigning from Mr Johnson's government and helping precipitate his downfall as PM.

Our political editor Beth Rigby  has been speaking to people close to the ex-PM, and says: "I'm hearing from his allies that he'll likely come on the campaign trail and support some of the those MPs who were loyal to him."

But she adds that there is "no sense at all he'll swing in behind Mr Sunak and the others who helped depose him."

In terms of the timing of the general election, Beth says that most MPs and government figures she has spoken to are still saying autumn is the most likely.

Labour has been critical of Rishi Sunak for taking 24 hours to label a Tory donor's reported comments "racist" ( more here ).

But just a few weeks ago after antisemitic comments by Labour's Rochdale candidate Azhar Ali were uncovered, the party stood by him after he issued an apology before withdrawing support 24 hours later after fresh comments emerged.

So we put to shadow minister Jonathan Ashworth that Labour's criticism seems a bit rich, and that they should not politicise such issues.

Mr Ashworth replied that Labour did suspend its candidate, which had "a political implication for us".

"The Conservative Party here is refusing to take a decision which has a political implication for them - i.e. hand the £10m back. So I do think it's a different scenario."

He went on to say that racism of any form must be challenged, "whether it's difficult for your party or not".

"We've done a lot in the Labour Party to change the Labour Party under Keir Starmer's leadership to deal with the problems that we had with antisemitism.

"That took leadership, that took a strong approach from Keir Starmer - but Rishi Sunak's not doing the same, is he?"

Mr Ashworth also pointed to the PM being slow to act against now Reform MP over "Islamophobic" remarks, and put that down to him being "weak".

"He should, when he's confronted with racism, do the decent thing and hand this money back," Mr Ashworth concluded.

Our political editor Beth Rigby  has been speaking to senior Conservative MPs in the last few hours to get a sense of the mood in the party amid another row that has seen Rishi Sunak criticised for being slow to react.

She says the "mood in the party is terrible", with one senior Tory saying they are "exhausted by the psychodrama".

Beth adds: "The PM's authority is shot, but there is no big move against him."

Ministers break ranks without consequence

Some MPs are furious that Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch broke ranks with the government yesterday to label reported comments by Tory donor Frank Hester "racist" after Downing Street spent the day refusing to say that, Beth says.

She also notes that two serving ministers, Tom Tugendhat and Anne-Marie Trevelyan, broke ranks to demand the PM spend more on defence after no new funding was announced in the budget last week.

And on top of that, another serving minister, Andrew Bowie, publicly spoke out against the PM and chancellor's decision to extend the oil and gas windfall tax.

One minister told Beth: "If he had strength, he'd have sacked Bowie. He's no control and lost collective responsibility."

Could Sunak be removed?

Although "most people have lost the will to live", Beth hears that no big moves are under way to remove Mr Sunak as PM.

She says one senior MP reckons a couple more letters of no confidence have gone into the 1922 committee in recent days, but that MP added: "Still a big gap between perhaps 20+ [letters] and the 50 needed for a [confidence] vote."

It helps there is no obvious successor to Mr Sunak, nor the "talisman" (for some) that is Boris Johnson, who is no longer in parliament.

She goes on to say the May local elections "could be the flash point" if the polling is "very bad".

But she adds: "If there were a roll of the dice by MPs at that point, it would probably more be accidental than by design."

Beth concludes some senior Tories think agitating against PMs - as was done against Theresa May - has to end and they "don't want to fan the flames".

She concludes: "The view is that it is Rishi Sunak who has to fail and own the general election loss so there's a clean sheet for the new leader."

By Serena Barker-Singh , political correspondent

Zarah Sultana starts every event she attends the same way.

She has to log the date, location and time into a little mechanical device at each destination so security teams know where she is.

That way, if any danger were to occur, her colleagues and the parliamentary authorities can send support as quickly as possible.

She's the Labour MP for Coventry South and the youngest Muslim MP ever elected in this country and believes this is partly the reason why this year - according to parliament's own records - she's the most at-risk MP online.

Since the 7 October attacks by Hamas on Israel, there has been a noticeable uptick in the hatred and abuse she receives online and she says, ever since she has started talking about Palestinian rights, the abuse has come thick and fast.

Often when talking about abuse, out of politeness, we risk sanitising the words that people direct towards her. So I cautiously ask her whether she would mind being open about what life is like for her on an average day.

She candidly whips out her phone and rattles off some of the types of abuse she has to deal with.

"'You should be deported b***h," the first one reads.

"Go home to Pakistan," another abuser writes.

Read the full eyewitness report here:

We've just been speaking with Labour's Jonathan Ashworth, and we started with the length of time it took for Rishi Sunak and the government to label reported comments by Tory donor Frank Hester "racist" ( more here ).

He said it was "absolutely staggering it took Rishi Sunak 24 hours to condemn these racist, reprehensible comments about Diane Abbott".

Mr Ashworth said it "shows how weak Rishi Sunak is", pointing to how long it took him to deal with comments by the now Reform MP Lee Anderson for "Islamophobic" comments about the London mayor.

He went on to say the Tory party and the PM have taken £10m from Mr Hester, which means "every Tory MP and candidate" is funded my a man who has "made these deeply, deeply racist comments".

"If Rishi Sunak had anything about him, if he had any backbone, he would pay that money back today," he added, and expressed outrage that the Tories would be willing to take more money from him (see previous post).

Mr Ashworth added that Labour would return money in such a circumstance and would not accept any more in future.

Of the Tory party, he added: "The decent thing would be to pay this money back. Are they really that desperate for their leaflets in an election campaign that they need this man's money?"

A short while ago, a government minister said the Conservative Party would be willing to accept another £10m donation from Frank Hester, who reportedly made comments the PM has described as "racist and wrong".

In case you missed it, Mr Hester reportedly said that suspended Labour MP Diane Abbott made him "want to hate all black women" and that the politician "should be shot" ( more here ).

Asked on BBC Breakfast if the Tories would accept another £10m from Mr Hester, business minister Kevin Hollinrake replied: "On the basis that we don't think Mr Hester is a racist, yes."

Asked to clarify that the Tories would accept additional money from the businessman, the minister said: "As I now understand the situation, yes."

Mr Hollinrake added he thought there were "bigger issues at play here that we need to focus on, in terms of probably greater priorities" for the government than the story surrounding Mr Hester.
