Where to store a fishing rod in an RV?

Some of the ideas in this article are commercial products intended for fishing rod storage, and some of them are clever DIY ideas devised by RV’ers like you.

1) Store in the Shower

A lot of people in the Facebook groups I’m in say they store their fishing rods in their shower. They just prop them upright against the shower wall.

2) Lay on the Bed

This is another easy option for storing your fishing rod. I read a man’s comment in an online group where he said that his fishing rod was too expensive to store anywhere else. 🙂

3) Store your fishing rod in zippered rod bags…

Lixada Fishing Rod Case Three Layers Oxford Fishing Bag Portable Folding Fishing Rod Reel Tackle Tool Carry Case Carrier Travel Bag(130cm/150cm)

There are tons of fishing rod storage bags out there. (My telescoping rod came with its own storage bag.)

The above fishing rod storage bag is just one of several I found on Amazon. It is available in 2 different sizes depending on your needs.

It is available in a 130cm size (just over 51-inches), and a 150cm size (59-inches).

If you have minimal fishing gear a compact case like this could double as your tackle box too. It has 3 main interior compartments, and 2 pockets on the outside for extra tackle and gear.

4) Fly Fishing Rod Storage Tubes

Clear Creek Fly Fishing Rod Tube - 9' (Three Piece) - Easy to Carry Complete Protection Storage Case - Interior Divided Organizer and Works with Fresh + Saltwater Rods and Top Brand Name Fishing Rods

This fly fishing rod storage tube has a simple tube design with a zippered end.

This tube comes in two size. It is intended to hold a 9-foot long fly fishing rod , but which storage tube you buy will depend on your particular rod.

Does your fly fishing rod separate into 3 pieces or 4 pieces? ( Some rods break down into 2,3,4 and more pieces!)

The company Clear Creek makes this in a version to store a 3-piece fishing rod , and they make a version that holds a 4-piece fly fishing pole.

It is a popular option for storing your fly fishing rod.

5) Inside a PVC tube mounted in RV basement

DIY PVC RV hacks are everywhere on the internet. And using a PVC pipe to store a fishing rod is just another way to use this plumbing material. Mount the PVC pipe in your RV basement (AKA the pass-through…or storage area), and then insert your fishing rod into the tube . You may have to remove the reel depending on the diameter of the pipe, or you could cut a notch in the pipe to accommodate the reel.

6) Inside your RV Bumper or Bumper Storage Tube

Valterra A04-5094BK RV Adjustable EZ Hose Carrier with Lockable Door Cap, Black

If your RV already has a hollow bumper for storage, you could potentially store your rod in there. You may to have to remove the reel and just put the fishing rods inside the bumper. (Many people already have their blackwater hose in here though.)

If your RV doesn’t have a storage bumper, the company V alterra makes the above adjustable storage tube that you mount to the bumper of your RV. It is intended for RV sewer hoses, but you could use for fishing rods too.

Because your rods will bounce around inside these tubes or bumpers, you should wrap your rods in cloth or foam or prevent damage during travel days.

7) Berkeley Fishing Rod Holders (horizontal or vertical storage)

Berkley Black Horizontal Rod Rack

Lots of RV’ers use these in their trailers. But do you travel over really rough roads?

The product shown above is the horizontal 6-rod holder by Berkley . You can get creative with these and mount them as it suits your particular RV.

  • Some people mount them to the walls of their storage area (the pass-through compartment)
  • You could try mounting these to the “ceiling” of the RV basement area (pass-through) to prevent them from getting damaged on the floor by tools or other equipment.
  • You could potentially even mount them to a wall inside your RV

They also make a vertical fishing rod holder that you can find on Amazon . (It is shown below.)

Berkley Black Horizontal Rod Rack

8) Mount a Broom and Mop Holder to the wall of RV basement

This is a DIY idea that mimics what you can accomplish with the Berkley fishing rod holder shown above.

But instead of a dedicated fishing rod holder you use a broom holder mounted to the wall.

Place the handle of the rods into the broom-holder clips, and on the other end use hooks to hold up the tips. (So the rod is suspended horizontally along the length of the wall.)

9) Fishing rod holder with straps

attwood 12761-7 Vertical Mount Fishing Rod Holder, Set of 2

Once again this is similar to the RV fishing rod storage ideas I just mentioned but this one has the benefit of a strap to help keep your rods in place . This may be especially helpful if you traverse really bumpy roads in your pursuit of catching the big one.

It is made by attwood. It comes as a set of two. You mount them on the wall so one holder will hold the handle of the rods, and the other holder will hold the tips.

You can click here to check out more details on Amazon.

10) Wall-mounted, or ceiling-mounted Wooden Fishing Rod holder

Old Cedar Outfitters Solid Pine Horizontal Ceiling Rack for Fishing Rod Storage, Holds up to 9 Fishing Rods, CPR-009

The company “Old Cedar Outfitters” makes this attractive fishing rod holder. You can mount it to your ceiling (as shown above), or on a wall.

It wouldn’t be great for travel days, but it would work well for once you’re set up at your campsite.

Just grab your fishing rod off the rack and you’re ready to go.

On travel days you could tie your rods into place, or lay them on your bed like we saw earlier in this article.

If you’re handy with wood, you could create your own wooden fishing rod holder. Creating a wooden DIY solution like this (with slight modification) could also give you a spot to hang a broom, fire pokers and wiener-roasting sticks. But you’ll probably want to have some eye-hooks on the ends of the wood so you can use a bungee cord to strap your fishing rods in place.

11) Hang your Fishing Rods Using Fabric Straps

Overhead or Wall Rod Storage System. Two Sizes to Choose From. 6 Rod Positions or 9 Rod Positions. (6 rod)

This could be a good RV fishing rod storage idea for people that don’t want to screw into their walls.

You could use a strong Command Hooks to hold the metal D-hooks on this fishing rod storage webbing.

Such a cool idea. But would it work for your RV?

This version shown is the 6-rod holder, but they also make a 9-rod holder if you go fishing with a large family.

If you were handy you could make something similar using a stapler and nylon strapping (like the packaging that comes around appliances). Staple the strapping to a piece of wood leaving pockets to hold your fishing rod.

I hope one of these RV fishing rod storage ideas will help you on your next camping adventure.

One thing I want to point out is that NOT every idea will work for every RV’er.

You’ll need to analyze your needs and find one that works for you. Find an option that suits your RV and the dimensions of your fishing rod too!

Fishing is more than just a hobby for many; it’s a passion. And with that passion comes a collection of fishing rods and gear that can quickly take up space in our homes, garages, or vehicles. To keep things organized and accessible, it’s essential to have efficient storage solutions for our fishing equipment. Thankfully, there are numerous innovative and practical ideas available to help streamline our fishing gear storage, making it easier to keep everything in order and, ultimately, enhancing our fishing experience.

From fishing rods storage ideas for the home to portable and mobile options, as well as outdoor and boat storage ideas, there’s no shortage of ways to keep our fishing rods and gear neat and tidy. Organizing and maintaining our gear is not only useful for better access, but it also helps preserve the life of our equipment. Whether you’re looking for DIY projects or top-rated products, there’s a wealth of information and inspiration out there to help you create the perfect storage setup for your unique needs.

Key Takeaways

  • Efficient storage solutions help organize and preserve fishing equipment.
  • Numerous ideas are available for home, portable and outdoor storage.
  • Proper organization enhances the overall fishing experience.

Fishing Rod and Gear Storage Fundamentals

fishing rod storage ideas

As a passionate angler, I know firsthand the importance of properly storing my fishing equipment. In this section, we will discuss some effective storage ideas and techniques that will help to extend the lifespan of our fishing gear and keep it organized, ultimately saving us time and effort when we head out for our next fishing adventure.

To begin, it’s important to clean our fishing rods and gear thoroughly before storing them. This includes wiping down the rod with a damp cloth, cleaning the reel, and removing any dirt or debris from the line. By doing so, we reduce the chances of corrosion and other damage that can occur during storage.

One simple and effective fishing rod storage idea is to use a tall bucket. By standing the rods upright in the bucket, they remain organized and easily accessible. This method is particularly useful for those with limited storage options and works well for both short-term and long-term storage.

Racks specifically designed for fishing rod storage provide a more structured solution. Vertical or horizontal racks that hold multiple rods are useful for keeping equipment organized and separated to prevent tangles and other potential damage. Many racks can accommodate up to 12 rods and can be placed in the garage or other storage spaces. Ceiling-mounted rod racks are another useful option for those looking to save floor space.

For those with larger boats, incorporating built-in rod storage is an excellent way to keep fishing gear organized and protected. Many types of boats have designated rod storage compartments that allow for easy access to equipment while also keeping it secure during transit.

Overall, it’s essential to find a storage system that works best for our specific needs and keeps our fishing gear protected, organized, and accessible. With proper care and storage, we can ensure our fishing rods and gear remain in top condition for many fishing trips to come.

Storage Ideas for Home

Diy fishing rod racks.

One simple way to store fishing rods at home is by creating a DIY fishing rod rack. This can be done using PVC pipes or even a foam pool noodle. To create a PVC pipe rack, measure the length of your fishing rod and cut the PVC pipe to size. Drill holes on the side of the PVC pipe, about an inch from the top, and insert screw hooks. Line up the spots for screw hooks on the wall and hang your fishing rods.

If you prefer using a foam pool noodle, simply cut it to the desired length and make slits at regular intervals that can hold the rods. Attach the noodle to the wall using screws or strong adhesive.

Wall-Mounted Storage

Another option for storing fishing rods are wall-mounted racks, which can effectively use the vertical space while keeping your rods secure and organized. Commercially available wall racks come in various materials like wood or metal that can easily match your home’s decor. Wall racks provide easy accessibility, and some even have built-in holders for other fishing gear like fishing net or tackle box.

Using Doors and Drawers

To maximize space at home, you can use your doors and drawers as additional storage areas. By attaching hooks or holders to the back of closet doors, you can easily mount your fishing rods and keep them off the floor. Similarly, large drawers can store smaller rods, reels, and other fishing equipment. Just make sure to cushion and organize the interior to prevent any damage or tangling.

Adjustable Shelves and Cabinets

Lastly, adjustable shelves and cabinets are an efficient way to store your fishing rods and other gear. You can customize the spacing and height between shelves according to your specific storage needs. Cabinets provide additional benefits of protecting your equipment from dust and accidental damages, while also keeping your space looking tidy.

Remember, proper storage of your fishing rods not only helps maintain the quality and longevity of your gear, but also keeps your home neat and organized.

Portable and Mobile Storage Solutions

Vehicle storage.

When it comes to vehicle storage options, I find that the SUV Sportsman Cargo Cabinet is an excellent solution. This cabinet fits in the back of most SUVs and provides an efficient way to store and organize my fishing gear when I’m on the go. It even features a five-button combination lock (optional) and a pull-out workstation, allowing me to securely store my fishing rods and tackle while also having a convenient workspace.

Canoe Rod Holders

For those who enjoy canoe fishing, canoe rod holders are essential. These rod holders allow me to securely place my fishing rods, preventing them from falling overboard and freeing up my hands to paddle or manage other gear. Most canoe rod holders can easily be mounted on the sides or crossbars of my canoe, keeping my rods easily accessible while I’m out on the water.

Portable Fishing Rod Holders

In addition to vehicle and canoe storage, I find that portable fishing rod holders are an indispensable tool for my angling excursions. These holders provide a stable and secure place for my fishing rods, whether I’m on the shoreline, a dock, or even on ice. Some portable rod holder options include:

  • Collapsible rod holders : These holders conveniently fold up for easy storage and transport. They typically have adjustable angles to provide optimal positioning for my rods.
  • Ground stake rod holders : These stakes can be pushed directly into the ground, allowing me to set up my fishing rod securely wherever I choose to fish.
  • Clamp-on rod holders : These rod holders can be clamped onto various surfaces, such as boat railings or dock posts, providing versatile and stable support for my fishing rods.

With these portable and mobile storage solutions, I’m able to securely store my beloved fishing rods, keeping them organized and protected no matter my fishing environment.

Outdoor and Boat Storage Ideas

Boat rod storage.

As a fishing enthusiast, I understand the importance of keeping my rods organized and protected on a boat. For boat storage, I recommend investing in a rod holder for easy access and organization. Tube units are a great option as they store fishing rods vertically and may have additional storage holes for items like fillet knives and pliers. To further keep rods safe from saltwater or freshwater damage, try utilizing a spinning rod holder, specifically designed for easy transport and protection on a boat.

Fly Rod Storage

Storing fly rods can be tricky, especially outdoors, due to their delicate nature. I suggest creating a designated fly rod storage area, using rod racks designed specifically for fly rods. These racks often come with dividers to keep individual rods separate and prevent tangling. If you’re going to store your fly rods outside, ensure they are placed in a dry and shaded area to avoid any damage from sunlight and moisture.

Lure and Reel Storage

Organizing lures, reels, and fishing lines can significantly improve your fishing experience. For reel storage, I recommend using padded reel cases to protect your reels from any damage during transport. These cases are available in various sizes to cater to different types of reels, such as spinning reels or heavy boat reels.

As for lures and fishing lines, consider investing in lure storage pockets. These double-sided pads store plenty of fishing lures and can come in small and medium sizes. They’re perfect for keeping lures organized and easily accessible, while also protecting them from damage. To store fishing lines separately, you might want to use a spool box that keeps lines neatly rolled and prevents tangling.

Remember that proper storage and organization can ensure your fishing gear’s longevity and make your overall experience more enjoyable.

Organizing and Maintaining Fishing Gear

Keeping my fishing gear well-organized and maintained is essential for having a successful and enjoyable fishing experience. In this section, I will share my experiences and advice on how to properly organize and care for fishing rods, reels, and other gear.

First and foremost, proper storage of fishing rods is crucial. I recommend storing them vertically in a tall, sturdy bucket or using a wall-mounted rod holder. This allows me to easily see and access my rods while preventing them from getting tangled with each other. I also make sure to loosen the drag on my reels before storing them. This prevents tension in the fishing line and helps extend the life of my rods and reels.

I make use of my workshop area for organizing any additional hunting gear that I may have. By creating designated storage spaces, such as shelves or racks, I can keep my gear organized, clean, and ready for my next fishing trip.

Rinsing off my fishing gear is a simple step to minimize wear and tear. I always make sure to rinse my rods, reels, and other gear with fresh water after each use to remove any salt, dirt, or debris. This practice helps prevent rusting and damage, especially to sensitive parts like guide rings.

Sun protection is also important for my fishing gear. When not in use, I cover my rods with protective sleeves and store them in a cool, dry place. This helps prevent any potential UV damage or premature breakdown of my equipment.

In summary, by properly organizing and maintaining my fishing gear, I can be confident that my equipment will last, perform well, and be ready for my next fishing adventure.

Top Fishing Rod Storage Products

Rush creek creations.

I have the 11-rod holder from Rush Creek Creations range of fishing rod storage products, and I’m pretty impressed. I use two of these on the ceiling of my garage to keep them out of reach from my kids. They offer a variety of options, including free-standing, wall-mounted, and ceiling-mounted racks. They’re also quite affordable and durable due to their construction from solid pine or steel. One popular option is the 14-rod freestanding round rack, which looks great and is easy to assemble. For those with limited space, their overhead rod storage rack is excellent, especially as it holds up to 11 rods.

SUV Sportsman Cargo Cabinet

For anglers on the go, the SUV Sportsman Cargo Cabinet is a fantastic fishing rod storage option. This cabinet is designed specifically for storing and organizing all your fishing gear in the back of your SUV or truck. The system features:

  • Rod Storage : Dedicated spaces for up to 8 fishing rods.

  • Capacity to store up to 10 fishing rods in an upright position.
  • Additional Storage : Space for your tackle boxes, accessories, and other fishing gear.

The discreet camouflage-design is an attractive bonus and can add a personalized touch to your fishing storage setup.

By employing these storage solutions, you can keep your fishing gear organized, protected, and easily accessible, letting you focus on what you love most – fishing!

Tips for Transporting Fishing Rods

As a fishing enthusiast, I understand the importance of properly transporting my fishing rods to keep them safe and ready to use. So, I’d like to share some tips for transporting fishing rods, whether it’s for a weekend canoe trip or traveling overseas.

First and foremost, invest in a sturdy rod case or tube. The case protects your rod from any damage during transportation. Remember, the length of the rod case should be appropriate for the size of the fishing rod. If you’re unsure of what size to choose, consult the manufacturer for recommendations.

If utilizing a canoe or kayak for your fishing trip, you can attach the rod case to the vessel using bungee cords or straps. This way, your rods remain secure during the journey. Alternatively, some canoes come with built-in fishing rod holders to make transportation even easier.

When transporting multiple rods in a vehicle, consider using a fishing rod rack. These racks can be mounted on the vehicle’s roof, inside the car’s trunk, or in the bed of a pickup truck. Align the rod holders evenly, ensuring the rods are adequately spaced to prevent them from rubbing against each other.

For those who need secure storage solutions, locking drawers are an excellent option. They can be installed in truck beds or SUVs, providing a safe space to store fishing rods along with other valuable fishing gear. DECKED® offers some fishing gear storage options worth considering for this purpose.

While flying with your rods, it’s essential to know airline policies for carrying fishing gear. Typically, you can check in the rod case or tube as luggage, or some airlines allow them as carry-on items. In either case, make sure your rods are well-protected and labeled with personal information.

Finally, before storing your rods, it’s a good idea to loosen the drag to keep the fishing line from pulling on the rod or breaking. Additionally, consider using rod sleeves when taking your rods apart to keep all the parts together and prevent damage.

With these tips, you can confidently and safely transport your fishing rods to your desired destination, ensuring they remain in top condition and ready for action.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some space-saving options for storing fishing rods.

There are various space-saving options for storing fishing rods. I can use ceiling-mounted racks, which help keep the rods out of the way and free up floor space. I can also install wall-mounted holders that keep the rods aligned horizontally or vertically. Additionally, vertical rod racks can save space in tight areas while still providing easy access to my gear.

How can I organize my fishing rods to keep them tangle-free?

To keep my fishing rods tangle-free, I can invest in rod storage racks with individual holders for each rod. This way, I ensure the lines don’t get tangled, and each rod has enough space to rest securely. I can also choose storage systems with built-in reel slots or spool holders for better organization.

What materials should I consider for a durable fishing rod storage solution?

For a durable fishing rod storage solution, I might consider materials such as wood, metal, or heavy-duty plastic. Are there any DIY fishing rod storage ideas that I can create at home?

Yes, there are many DIY fishing rod storage ideas I can create at home. For example, I can use a wooden pallet to build a wall-mounted rod holder, or repurpose PVC pipes and construct a stand-alone rack. Another option is to create a ceiling rack using a simple wood frame and eye hooks. With a little creativity and some basic tools, I can tailor my rod storage system to fit my specific needs, while also showcasing my personal style.

What factors should I consider when choosing a fishing rod storage system?

When choosing a fishing rod storage system, I should consider factors such as available space, the number of rods to store, accessibility, and durability of the materials. Moreover, I need to ensure my storage solution effectively prevents damage to my gear from factors like sunlight, moisture, or accidental knocks. Additionally, personal preferences such as budget and aesthetics will also guide my decision.

Creating Family Connections One RV Adventure at a Time

September 6, 2016 by: Jarrett

The “reel” deal

When we decided earlier this year not to take the boat out of storage, the kiddos were disappointed about missing out on our family’s fun fishing trips. They were quickly appeased by the news that they would instead be able to do some fishing on our camping trips this summer. The only problem was that I didn’t have a really secure place to store the poles during our travels. On our first trip of the summer they were just stashed along the side of the storage compartment and, unfortunately, one pole ended up with a broken eye. So before we left for our second trip of the summer I decided it was time to find a better space saving strategy and create a camper fishing pole holder.

fishing rod storage travel trailer

  • Three 4″ PVC pipe couplers (you could use bigger or smaller based upon your needs)
  • Three dryer vent pipe clamps
  • Self-tapping screws (I use these because our frame is aluminum; if you have a wood frame, then any screw will do the job.)
  • Small drill bit to put holes in the dryer vent pipe clamps

fishing rod storage travel trailer

Step 1: Determine how long your fishing poles are and find a location in the top of a storage compartment where they will be “out of the way.” You will be anchoring the three pipes in a row approximately the length of your rods. Be sure to pick a location where it will be easy to get the poles in and out of the compartment. I put them over my hitching supplies and grill (stuff that I can’t stack) so that there is less likelihood that something will fall or slide during transport and hit the pole holder.

Additionally, I arranged the holders so the tips of the rods go through two PVC holders and then the handle area of the rod (below the reel) sits in the third PVC pipe right next to the sidewall of the camper. (Important note: I positioned it this way because the sidewall helps hold the rods in the pipe holder amid all the bumping and jostling as we are driving down the road.) To remove the rods, I have to slide them forward a bit so that the handles are free from the pipe and then angle them out of the other two pipes.

Step 2: Pre-drill small holes in the dryer vent pipe clamps about 2-3″ from where the end of the tightening slots are, then use the self-tapping screws to attach the clamps to the camper frame (see picture). I had to use two screws for each to make it secure, but each camper will be different so you may only need one. I also found it was easier to attach the clamp to the frame by unthreading it.

fishing rod storage travel trailer

Step 4:  If needed, rethread the clamps and start to tighten them up. Insert the PVC pipe and finish tightening the clamps down securely around the pipe. Repeat the process for the second and third pipe, remembering to position them so they are all in line with each other.

fishing rod storage travel trailer

And that’s it! This little camper modification was a really quick storage solution (it took me about 30 minutes), and it only cost about $20 to provide a safe place to keep the fishing rods. And I can confirm that it worked great this summer!

fishing rod storage travel trailer

So what do you think: Would this camper fishing rod holder work for you? How do you store your fishing poles when you go camping?

An overlooked gem: Exploring Cedar Breaks National Monument

For many families planning a trip to the Utah region, their itineraries often center on hitting the high points of iconic stops like Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, and Arches. Several lesser-known parks are also worth the stop, though, and for families looking for ways to escape the crowds, Cedar Breaks National Monument should be on …

Fishing Rod Storage Ideas For 2021

fishing rod storage ideas - featured

You can’t call yourself a real fisherman if you don’t take care of your gear. And if you’re a real, real fisherman, you have a lot of gear to take care of. Keeping your fishing rods and gear clean, organized, and securely stored is essential. Whether you need at-home storage or on-the-go storage solutions, we’ve got some organization ideas to keep your fishing reels shiny, your rods straight, and your lines untangled. Let’s reel ’em in! Here’s what we’ll be going over:

Benefits of Proper Fishing Rod Storage

Fishing Gear Storage Tips

Forget that old fishing pole you had when you were eight. You remember. It’s the one you leaned against the back wall of the garage with your brother’s and dad’s rods, behind the bike you outgrew last year? It’s time to buy a rod that matches who you are now! But these grownup fishing rods can get incredibly pricey, and all the gear you need can eat up your budget. Oh, not to mention it can also mortally tick off your wife—unless she’s into fishing, in which case…you have married well, sir.

Don’t get me wrong, more power to you if you’re buying $20 rods at Walmart—plenty of people do and get along just fine. But if you’re that guy and you stumble on one of those Oyster Bamboo Fly Rods , do yourself a favor and don’t pick it up. You want something right in between; something functional, beautiful, easy to maintain and easy to store. The point is, if you’re serious about fishing, you need to get serious about storage. Be it the $20 rod or the $5,000 rod, taking care of it should be a top priority. Whether you have a fly rod or a saltwater rod, you should be able to store them using any of the ideas in this post.

Speaking of different types of rods, let’s go over some of the most common fishing rods. Once we know what we’re dealing with, it’ll be easier to store them away properly.

Fly Rods – As the name suggests, fly rods are rods primarily used for fly fishing. They’re typically lighter in weight and much thinner than traditional rods. Modern fly rods come in various sizes and shapes and are made of high-quality materials such as fiberglass or graphite.

Conventional Spin Rods – Your standard fishing rod for most all-purpose fishing and target fish species. Lightweight, flexible, and with a spinning reel, it’s a great option for most beginners.

Saltwater Rods – These rods are typically made of corrosion-resistant materials to withstand higher saltwater concentrations. These materials include stainless steel, carbon, or titanium.

Freshwater Rods – You can use these the same way you would saltwater rods; the biggest difference is that they might not last as long because they’re not made with the same corrosion-resistant materials.

Now that we’ve covered some of the basics, here’s a look at why it’s essential to store any rod safely.

You’ll Avoid Breakage

Fishing Gear Break

Throwing your fishing rods into the corner of a garage or room leaves them susceptible to bending or breaking. (Only things acceptable to throw into the corner of your garage is that old treadmill and Bowflex.) If you have multiple rods, placing them all together can cause the ones on the bottom to break underneath the others’ weight. Storing them in an upright position with proper spacing can make all the difference when it comes to keeping your rods intact and in perfect working condition.

They’ll Last a Long Time

We already talked about cost. How often do you want to replace a rig that costs hundreds just because you didn’t take care of it? Keeping your fishing rods stored safely will give them a much longer lifespan than just placing them wherever you can fit them.

The Parts Won’t Rust

The guide rings and other components on practically every fishing rod are made of metal and should be thoroughly rinsed and dried before storing away. This will prevent rusting!

They’ll Be Protected From the Elements

They may be outdoor gear, but constant exposure to the sun can be brutal. Imagine that back-of-the-neck sunburn you get every Fourth of July on your rods. Yeah, safe to say it’s best to just keep them tucked away from the sun’s fury. Keeping your fishing rods out of direct sunlight will help them last longer and maintain their sturdiness. Make sure to keep them in a dry, shaded area.

Fishing Rod Storage

Avid fishermen have two storage scenarios to consider: when they’re at home and when they go on fishing trips. Let’s start with a shop or garage storage.

Garage Storage Solutions

You know what they say—there’s plenty of fish in the sea. The same is true for fishing rod storage racks. There’s plenty of ‘em out there. Here are some great commercial and DIY garage options.

  • DIY Overhead Rack – Running out of storage for all your different rods? Believe us, we get it. Luckily, this overhead DIY fishing rod holder keeps your rods separate and supported, and it’s pretty simple to put together with just a few things you can find at any hardware store. It’s an inexpensive way to get your rods out of the way and still have plenty of space for shelving and storage. Naturally, you want to make sure an overhead rack doesn’t interfere with the garage door.
  • DIY Wall Rack – This genius hack from Familyhandyman uses PVC pipe for fishing pole holders and—wait for it—a pool noodle to make a standing rack. That’s right. This PVC fishing rod holder utilizes a pool noodle.
  • Fancy Wood Rack – If you want to dress up your man-cave and have some basic woodworking skills, this wall rack is functional, wall-mounted to maximize space, and even looks good enough to hang proudly inside the house. If you want something decorative and don’t know your way around a workbench, check Etsy for a handmade fishing pole storage solution with a little extra style.
  • Commercial Racks – If you’re not into DIY projects or just want quick garage organization solutions, the Rush Creek Creations store on Amazon has a great selection of rod storage options. Their shop includes a wheeled, freestanding cart with fishing rod racks on the sides, fishing tackle storage shelves, vertical or horizontal wall racks, ceiling racks, or round racks.

Fishing Trip Storage

Fishing Trip Storage

All those options sound nice for when you’re home, but you run into a whole new set of problems when you hit the road. Not only do you need to stay organized, but everything needs to be portable, accessible, and secure. We might be a little biased, but we think the DECKED drawer system is the best solution out there.

DECKED drawers are the perfect storage systems for your fishing trips. Since they fit in the bed of your truck and easily slide all the way out, you can use our organization components to create your own custom storage solutions and compartments. Find ways to store your massive collection of fish paraphernalia: tackle, bait, reels, waders, rigs, jigs—whatever you might need. And if you catch a ton of fish, you’ll still have plenty of room because our drawer system has a 2000lb payload (that’s a lot of tuna fish sandwiches). They’re also fully waterproof, so you can hose out the bed when you get home, and your gear will be safe and dry.

Want another way of transporting your rods? Consider a vehicle roof rack carrier specifically made for rods to be kept out of the way. These are a great option unless you already have a kayak up there or if you’re concerned about theft. If that’s the case, you may want to find another solution, like this innovative portable rod storage idea for anglers, the Rod Caddy by Castek . It mounts to the wall using brackets, so when you’re ready to roll, you just lift the whole dang thing out and can carry up to four rods. The entire rod organizer assembly is compact enough to fit in one of our drawers, so you don’t have to worry about theft, damage, or stabbing a passenger in the eye with an interior roof rack. A fishing pole rack inside your vehicle just seems like a problem waiting to happen. This sort of caddy would be easy to load several rods onto a bass fishing boat for a day on the water. You can also hold them in place while you’re boating, so they don’t get stepped on.

Fishing Tackle Storage

fishing tackle storage

The DECKED Crossbox is an excellent way to organize your fishing gear. The boxes come equipped with their own compartments and are perfect for keeping your fishing gear. Crossboxes are also waterproof. Your equipment will be protected from saltwater or hose spray. You can confidently hose off the fish scales when you’re done and in just minutes, you’re ready to go.

Crossboxes fit snugly inside the DECKED drawer system, transforming your truck bed into the ultimate storage space for everything you could need regardless of your adventure. The coolest thing about the DECKED system? At the end of your fishing trip, you can take your fishing tackle Crossboxes out and put your tool storage Crossboxes in, changing your fishing truck to a well-organized work truck in seconds. Voilà! Now you’re a fisherman and a magician.

Small specialty containers will also help you keep everything separate inside larger carrying boxes. You’re likely to need:

  • Spool boxes
  • Lure storage
  • Tackle box for hooks, bobbers, and sinkers
  • Bag to carry small tackle. Our DECKED D-Bag holds a ton of small containers, it’s practically indestructible, and it’s easy to carry.

Here are a few fishing gear storage tips to extend the life of your gear and be ready for the next fishing season.

  • To keep the fishing line from pulling on the rod or breaking, loosen the drag before storing your fishing rods.
  • If you take your rods apart, use rod sleeves to keep all the parts together.
  • Make sure everything is clean and dry before storing or putting away. You don’t want the smell of last season’s catch wafting from your tackle box after it’s aged for a few months. You also don’t want to find all your hooks rusty and unusable.
  • Dissemble your reels to clean and oil them before storing for the off-season.
  • Repair or replace damaged, corroded, or rusty equipment at the end of the season.
  • Fishing knives should be cleaned, sharpened, and coated with oil after every use.
  • Keep your fishing rods and gear in one place for easy access and to do some quick rigging before setting out to fish.
  • A dedicated fish station workbench to clean fish and equipment is a clever idea if you have a place for it.
  • If you’re looking to buy or sell fishing equipment, check out The Hull Truth fishing forum.
  • Last but not least: don’t forget to bring a phone charger for those great fly-fishing pics. You know the drill—pics or it didn’t happen.

Whatever storage solution you go with for your fishing rods, make sure you double-down and get some DECKED accessories to cover all your bases. Don’t be some fish out of water without the proper gear out there. Go ahead, take the bait.

DIY Rod Holder for RV & Truck Camper – No Tools, Cheap & Easy

This post contains affiliate links.

One massive advantage of our truck camper for fly fishing trips is being able to hang our made-up rods from the ceiling, saving time and effort whenever we want to fish.

The solution to hanging fly rods in the camper ceiling was easy with purchasing two simple items from the local hardware store.   We paid less than $15 to secure our fly fishing rods and installed them in less than 10 minutes – without needing any tools!

Now we can safely store our rods and move to the next fishing site instantly.

Step-by-step instructions for installing a rod holder – without tools

Purchase these two items.

  • Command Cord Bundler
  • Spring clamp

(Affiliate links below.)

Like many Command products, the Cord Bundlers are self-adhesive for easy application to the ceiling.

The plastic spring clamps help secure the rods without any fear of damage.

Find a location on the ceiling of your camper where the rod, complete with reel, can hang without obstruction.

Two things to note:

  • You need to be able to get your rods in and out of the camper without turning any corners.
  • Be careful to find a place where you will not hit the tip on any hard surfaces as you enter.

Be aware of things that might get in the way:

  • Open cupboard doors
  • Fridge door
  • Light fittings
  • Dropdown beds

Secure one Command Cord Bundler onto the ceiling to hold the rod tip.

(Follow the instructions for applying the self-adhesive tape and bundler clip.)

The rod tip should slide through the loop, about 12-24 inches from the tip. (Our rod tip holder sits in a space between the cupboard and the smoke detector.)

Secure a second Command Cord Bundler onto the ceiling at the heaviest spot of the rod grip, near the reel.

The Cord Bundlers will be set cross-ways to the length of the rod, so the loop wraps around the rod.

Add a third Command Cord Bundler loop halfway along the rod for a heavy rod or extra safety.

(Wait 30 minutes before putting the rod in the Cord Bundlers so the self-adhesive tape can set fast.)

Carefully insert the rod into the tip loop, secure the rod grip by wrapping the other cord bundler loop around the handle near the reel.

Finally, apply the Spring Clamp around the cord bundler loop and the rod grip – to stop the rod or loop from working lose while driving.

Rod holder Command Cord Image

You are done!   Our rods have never come loose using this method, even when taking our 4-wheel drive camper over very rough riverbank tracks.

Alternatives for hanging a fishing rod in an RV?

I’ve given instructions for hanging a rod on the ceiling, which is often the best because that is where you’ll find a space without obstructions, such as windows or cupboards.  But, there are options.

In a large camper, you may have a wall with enough space to hang a rod horizontally using this method.

The shower could be a good option for storing rods, vertically.  Simply apply the Command Cord Bundler at 90 degrees to the rod.RV storage garage

Many RV’s have a large storage area or garage under the bed that is ideal for hanging rods.

Some men are so in love with their rods that they like to store them on the bed.  That’s an option, but don’t forget it’s there when you lie down after a long day on the road!

Extra tip for hanging your rod in a small space

If the walls or shower do not have a long enough open space, consider breaking the rod (with reel attached) into two parts at the middle ferrule.

Wrap a hair tie or cable tie around each end to keep the two parts together.

Now secure the rod on the wall or ceiling with Command Cord Bundlers.

Why is it essential to secure rods when traveling in an RV?

Breaking the tip of a fly rod is the most common accidental damage.  (That’s why you can buy rods that come with a spare tip.)

Rods made of carbon fiber are highly efficient for casting, but it is precisely those qualities that make them very easy to break.

Also, rods are damaged easily by unintentional impact.  An impact can create a weak point that may not show up initially.

Only when you are landing a big trout, your rod might suddenly give way.

Lastly, how many rod tips have you broken by sitting or standing on them?

Alternatives to Command Cord Bundler and Grip Clamp

An alternative is the Command Broom & Mop Gripper ; however, the extra security provided by using the combination of Command Cord Bundler and Spring Clamp means you never have to worry about your rod falling out of the holder.

The Broom and Mop Gripper is a good option if you wish to store your rods vertically on the walls or in the shower – combined with a Cord Bundler to hold the rod tip.

There are lots of fishing rod holders on the market.  Some hold multiple rods hanging across the roof of your SUV, while others need fixing to walls with screws and brackets.

Check out the many rods holders available on Amazon here . (Affiliate link.)

The best and quickest solution for storing your rod without tools

What I’ve given you here is a super, simple rod holder for less than $15 that only takes 10 minutes to fit.

Now, you can get out and enjoy more fishing.

Fishing Rod Storage At Home And On The Road

Save your sticks from becoming useless

S nap! That’s the sickening sound of my favorite fishing rod turning into two worthless sticks. Fishing rods are one of the most expensive and least hardy tools in the sport, yet I abuse my rods at home, in the truck and on the water. To keep my rods and reels safe, I’ve found surefire storage and transport solutions. New racks, lockers and stands keep my rods out of the repair shop and ready to fish.

Fishing Rod Storage Solutions

Storage ideas for your garage.

Fish for a few years and a forest of fishing rods will grow in the garage. I currently have rods hanging from the ceiling, wall and sticking out of old kayak crates and vertical rod racks.

There are plenty of options for ceiling and wall mount fishing rod racks , but many anglers fashion DIY racks out of PVC pipe and scrap wood.

For the rods I use most, I have a vertical rod rack on wheels. I can move the rods around the garage to keep them untangled and out of the way.

The rods I’m prepping for immediate use are stored in surplus kayak crates with vertical rod holders . I’ve attached a single rod holder to the leg of my work bench to hold the rod I’m rigging.

[ Read more: Guide To Kayak Rod Holders—Mounts, Brands, Reviews & More ]

I thought I had used every inch of storage space in the garage until I saw the Cobra Garage Door Storage Systems . Two NASA engineers worked for years to develop a system securing fishing rods to the inside of the garage door. When the door is lifted, the rods dangle from above.

Car or Truck Fishing Rod Storage

Most rod damage occurs on the way to and from the water. Car doors, bumpy roads, shifting gear and tangled lines can snap a fishing rod like a dry stick.

Fishing Rod Storage for Cars and SUVs

Inside an SUV or hatchback, rods should be stored hanging from the ceiling. In my first car, a Jeep Cherokee, I bolted rod racks to the headliner. The bastardized system held my rods tight, but seriously diminished the resale value of the car.

My next car, a bigger SUV, I stepped up to RodMounts’ ROD-UP Interior Rack for SUVs, Wagons and Vans . The system uses an extendable pole, like a shower curtain rod, to fit inside any vehicle. The rod rack hangs from the pole so reels can swing without banging. The racks come in different configurations to accommodate any type of fishing rod or vehicle.

Fishing Rod Storage for Trucks and Trailers

Recently, I moved into a full-size pickup truck. The truck offers plenty of room for transporting kayaks and gear , but no space for fishing rods. After snapping off tips and gouging my upholstery with fish hooks, I banned fishing rods from the truck cab.

About the time I decided to transport the rods on my utility rack, Yakima released the new TopWater rod rack . At first, I was skeptical. The eight-foot rod locker looks like a coffin on top of my truck. Overkill, I thought. Now, I can’t figure out how I lived without the TopWater.

I often carry my kayak to work so I can fish after office hours. Locking my rods in the TopWater keeps them from overheating in the truck cab and safe enough from theft. If I stop at the grocery store or grab a bite to eat on the way home from the water, I don’t worry about my rods.

[ Kayak Angler Buyer’s Guide: See all transport and storage accessories ]

The box supports up to eight rods with room for tackle trays below. Installation and removal is quick, with four oversized wing nuts holding it to my Yakima HD racks . The TopWater fits any rack system, so I can move it to my trailer and even store rods at home. As I shuffle fishing into my busy life, I never realized how much I needed the TopWater until I had it.

Video Review of the Yakima TopWater Rod Rack:

Properly Stored Rods Will Serve You Well

Since I changed how I store and transport rods, I’ve suffered less damage and spent less time untangling lures and lines. Keeping the rods safe and secure, they stand ready to use whenever I’m ready to fish.

Here’s What Makes a Great Fishing RV

Off-Grid Living

Most RVs these days come with battery and propane hookups. But if you bought an old converted camper like us, you’ll want to know the basic power sources for off-grid living.

If you’re able to boondock or disperse camp near your fishing spot, make sure you have a big deep cycle battery with an inverter . If you power anything other than LED lights, you’ll want at least a 100 amp hour battery and an 1800 watt inverter. We usually run lights and the water to the pump/toilet when we need to.

When it starts to cool off in the evening, you may want to run the furnace so make sure you have a full 20-pound propane tank, as well as a backup tank. If propane isn’t an option, a generator can also power an electric heater. Here are some ways to keep your camper warm.

If your secret fishing spot is off the beaten track, you’ll probably be dodging potholes, winding through dirt and gravel roads, or even rolling over snow and ice-covered paths. Look for an RV with raised suspensions, offset wheels, off-road tires, and a roof rack for storing watercraft like canoes and kayaks . There are camping trailers specifically designed for off-roading like the Forest River No Boundaries 10.6 – a durable off-road trailer for rougher terrain that can withstand all four seasons.

Truck campers also offer higher clearance since it’s an RV that sits in the bed of a pickup truck so the clearance depends on what truck you drive. Truck campers can have all the features of a typical travel trailer or fifth wheel but are often designed for one to two people. It’s compact, self-contained, and can have pop-tops or hard sides.

Some RV manufacturers, like A-Liner, will offer greater off-road capability through an off-road package option.

The Kitchen Sink

A kitchen sink makes all the difference in determining whether we eat freshly caught fish for dinner. Most campgrounds and boat launches don’t offer fish cleaning stations, so I usually clean our catch in the RV sink. Cleaning fish can get messy so having an area where you can fillet and rinse fish with clean water is convenient. Most modern campers have a sink attached to an electric pump with a pressurized water tank, but a sink can be as basic as a manual foot pump that pumps water out of a five-gallon freshwater jug through a spigot, draining into a five-gallon grey water jug.

Even better for cleaning fish is an outdoor kitchen. Our friends, Chase and Lindsay of We’re Out N’ About, have a lot to say about why they love their outdoor kitchen.

Pass-Through Storage

Surprisingly, many RVing anglers store their fishing rods in the shower or on top of their beds. But with bumpy roads, that can be risky – especially if you like to travel with hooks already tied to your rods. Pass-through storage is the safest and most convenient place for rods. You can mount PVC pipes or a fishing rod storage system to the ceiling of the pass-through storage to secure rods in rough road conditions. It’s also a place that’s easily accessible when you’re headed out the door to your next fishing spot.

I’ve only recently discovered the convenience of having a toy hauler. It’s a fantastic camper, but is also the best RV for carrying large items. If getting on the water is important to you, consider a toy hauler for transporting kayaks, canoes, small boats, and other water sports equipment. A toy hauler garage is an enclosed area, sectioned off from sleeper quarters, that keep watercraft from getting damaged or dirty while on the road.

Toy Hauler Garage Open with Anderson Family

If you like to fish year-round like our family, an ice house or a fish house is designed for that exact purpose. It’s an RV that also serves as an ice fishing house, complete with holes in the floor with removable covers, winter-rated insulation, a hydraulic or winch cranks to bring the frame down to the ice, a more powerful heater for those bitter cold days, and all of the amenities you’d find in a typical RV. It’s luxury on ice but can also serve as a camper for spring , summer , and fall .

There are other add-on components to convert a fishing RV to ice house, including rattle reels – fishing reels that attach to the walls so that the fishing line goes directly into an ice hole. Our fish house will have a fish camera and monitor this year – a fun addition for the kids (and adults) to watch what’s happening below the ice in real-time. We also store our ice fishing fish finders in one of the cabinets to grab it as soon as our first hole is augered and see if there are fish in that particular location.

An icehouse is sometimes called a fish house, ice shack, ice fishing shack, wheelhouse, darkhouse, or permanent house.

At the end of the day, the perfect fishing RV fits your lifestyle. The only non-negotiables for successful fishing while camping is your rod and reel, line, tackle, bait, and at times, a bit of luck.

Fishing Rod Storage Ideas: Reeling In The Mess

You love fishing, but you don’t love when your fishing poles are a muddy, tangled mess when it’s time to join your buddies on a fishing trip.

Now, we hate to break it to you, but if your rods are in less than perfect condition every time you go to cast a line, it might be a sign that you’re not properly storing them. However, the good news is that it’s actually quite easy to learn how to store your fishing rods !

In our guide below, we offer the best advice on how to organize your fishing poles . We start with some tips on preparing them for storage, and then we dive into our favorite fishing pole storage ideas . Whether you’re looking for a place to temporarily keep your rods between weekly trips out to the pond or a longer-term solution, like during the winter months, our tips and tricks can help!

Why Proper Fishing Rod Storage is Important

If fishing is your favorite pastime, then your fishing poles are likely your pride and joy. You’ve spent years collecting them and acquiring all the right equipment to reel in the perfect catch. But if you don’t take good care of them, they might not have the long lifespan you initially expected. That’s why it’s so important to find a proper fishing rod storage space.

When you take the time to find an appropriate fishing rod storage solution , your poles will be in tip-top condition the next time the fish are biting. You won’t have to worry about dealing with rusty lines or moldy poles because you will have taken the time and effort to properly care for them when placing them in their storage spot. And the best part? You won’t have to waste time running all over your home trying to remember where you placed your poles because they will be sitting in their designated fishing pole storage spot.

What You’ll Need to Know Before Storing Your Fishing Pole

The whole point of figuring out how to store fishing rods is so that you can keep them in prime condition and they’re ready for whatever fishing expedition comes your way. However, there’s more to storing your rods than just tossing them in a rack or wall mount and calling it a day.

To help ensure your fishing roles are up for the task, follow these simple steps before placing them in storage, and they’ll be all set for your next deep-sea fishing adventures.

Clean Your Rods

After an afternoon on the water, your rods have probably seen better days. Whether they’re covered in mud and muck or drenched in saltwater, you definitely don’t want to put them into storage looking that way because that could lead to mold, mildew, corrosion, and more!

To clean your poles, rinse them off with fresh water and wipe away any dirt and gripe. You can even use a toothbrush and gently scrub any stubborn spots. Once your poles look brand new, be sure to dry them off completely before placing them in storage.

Loosen the Line

Next, it’s important to loosen your line. This helps prevent the line from pulling on, stressing, and breaking the rod. While you’re at it, be sure to cut off any old line so you’re not left with a tangled mess.

Lubricate the Parts

Since you’ve already cleaned all the parts of your fishing rod, you might as well lubricate it for good measure. Lubricating it with light oil helps prevent rust and corrosion while keeping all the moving parts in working condition. Be sure to oil the reel, bail and spoon, reel handle, and rod body.

Use Sleeves

No matter if you’re storing your rods for a day or months at a time, we recommend picking up some sleeves to place over each one. Not only do these give them a little extra cushioning, but they also keep out dirt, dust, and moisture.

Furthermore, it’s a good idea to use sleeves when transporting your rods from one fishing hole to the next.

Find a Dry Place with Temperature Control

The best place for storing your rods is one that is dry with consistent temperatures. This is because moisture and fluctuating temperatures can do a number on your rods, causing them to rot, grow mold, and rust. If you don’t have an appropriate place for storing your rods in your home, consider renting a storage unit with climate-controlled features to help maintain the integrity of your rods.

Select a Suitable Storage Spot

If you are wondering where to store fishing rods , there are actually quite a few suitable storage options. Some people like to find storage solutions in their trucks, cars, or even boats so their fishing rods are right there when they want to drop a line. However, other people like to keep them in their homes, such as their basement, garage, rec room, shed, or even spare bedroom. But if you don’t have enough space at your property, you can always keep them in your storage unit.

Whatever place you choose, just be sure you follow our above tips to help keep your rods in prime condition.

Clever Fishing Rod Storage Ideas

Once you’re all prepped for storing your fishing rods, it’s time to find the perfect storage solution for your needs. Below, we’ve listed out our top fishing pole storage ideas to help inspire you!

fishing rod storage travel trailer

When it comes to the best fishing rod storage ideas , racks tend to top the list. With this option, you have so many different choices. There are ceiling racks, which let you conveniently hang your rods from the ceiling of your garage or basement, but there are also horizontal racks and vertical racks, too. Of course, the horizontal racks are designed for you to lay your rods parallel to the floor, while the vertical options allow you to stand them upright.

Rod Holders

Rod holders are similar to racks, but they usually have individual slots for each fishing pole. Again, when it comes to this f ishing rod storage option, there are so many varieties. For example, you can find some fishing rod holders that stand flush against the wall, but there are also round ones that invite you to place your rods upright in the shape of a circle. With so many choices, you’re sure to find one that suits your needs and matches your decor.

Wall Mounts

Another similar option is the wall mount. When you install these mounts along an open wall space, you can easily hang your rods. Some are like hooks, while others are more like slots that let you store a specific number of rods at a time. The beauty of this storage option is that you can keep your rods up and off the ground and conveniently out of the way.

Bungee Cord Rod Holder

If you’re looking for a DIY fishing rod storage idea , consider using bungee cords to make your own storage solution. Simply hang up two or three bungee cords on your ceiling, car roof, or wall, and then place your rods in the space between them. It might be simple, but it sure does work!

When it comes to fishing rod storage , you don’t have to get all fancy with contraptions designed for your poles. Sometimes, something as simple as an ordinary shelf will do the trick! Search for a metal or wooden rack that’s long enough to accommodate your poles, install it along an open wall, gently place your rods on top, and ta-da—you’ve got yourself an easy and affordable storage solution.

Car Seat Holders

If you’re searching for a fishing rod storage solution for your vehicle, look into the car seat storage options. These rod holders strap onto the back of your car seats, offering you a place to strap your poles when you’re on the go.

Prefer a minimalist option? Invest in some wall clips, which are basically small loops that you can attach to your wall. When you’re ready to hang your poles, just snap them into the clip, and you’re all set!

Portable Racks

A portable rack is another handy fishing pole organization idea . This is a compact rack that usually holds a handful of rods that you can conveniently grab and go whenever it’s time to head to the fishing hole. It’s portable, which means it is light and easy to transport, whether you’re hopping in your truck or heading out on your boat.
