Add CarPlay support & Remove Ads!

This App would be more helpful if it supported use in CarPlay. Considering it’s illegal to use a mobile device/phone while driving in WA it’s entrapment that this app doesn’t support use through a car’s onboard systems. Most cars from Hondas to Fords to Toyotas and Audi and Volvo are just a few major brands that support CarPlay now. CarPlay support would make using this type of app safer AND legal while driving!

Want to see chain/up areas...

Well you can't. You can click on individual passes and see what conditions are. And you can see traffic speeds. But you don't know will I need to chain up with 4wd at all, 10 miles out, 25 miles out? how cool would it be to just see a live map layer of chain up areas under different conditons for cars and trucks. How nice would it be for state patrol to know drivers who start from most anywhere in WA will arrive with full knowledge where chain up/off will happen? And guess what, California where it doesn't even snow in most areas, does this so well on web and app. C'mon WDOT, do better! In response to WADOT: with all due respect: consider for just a moment the time and money spent by DOT and delayed drivers because of lack of timely chain information in one place for all state highways. They consider how widespread adoption is of mobile phones, and finally how good mobile services is along all WA state highways. It is not so hard to deploy tools that update real time chain up requirements for big rigs and passenger vehicles on all WA highways. Please take this under consideration to improve safety and efficiency of state roads.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for the inquiry. We have several specific chain up/off areas that are used most of the time, however, these locations and requirements can change at any time. The location of our planned chain up/off areas for Snoqualmie pass are available on the webpage in the bulleted list under the forecast: https://wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mountainpasses/Snoqualmie and are also displayed on VMS signs up on the pass when that requirement is applicable. Posting those locations elsewhere besides the VMS signs isn’t in our best interest as actual chain-up locations are highly variable. As snow squalls pass through; and as snowplows clear, salt, and sand the roadways; the chain requirements change, often quite rapidly. Also, on busy routes like I-90, the chain-up location can change as one chain area becomes full and trucks have to be directed to a different one. The best source for chain up information will always be our VMS signs up on the pass which display real-time information 24/7. Hope that helps explain why!

Very useful but not perfect

I live in the islands, commute to work on another island and use this app several times a week. When ferries are running on time, it’s very useful. When service is disrupted, the app becomes less useful. I agree with other reviewers that real time updates are needed. Also, the booth workers in Anacortes claim that the app is not reliable as far as quotas, which also seems like a gap that needs to be mended. The app still is very useful for making or altering reservations on the go, or checking to see how much space is left on the ferry you’re gunning for. Having the local numbers for ferry landings is a good back up as is knowing how to interpret Vessel Watch. The more fluent you become in “ferry”, the more useful the app becomes.

Weather | denver metro area school delays, closures for march 15, 2024, weather | colorado road conditions: slick, snowy roads reported through foothills, mountain corridor, passenger vehicles can travel between denver and silverthorne.

Treacherous driving conditions are expected to continue overnight as a winter storm could drop up to 14 more inches of snow on the Front Range foothills, according to the National Weather Service.

Interstate 70 was closed in both directions throughout the day as a winter storm dropped several feet of snow along the Front Range mountains and foothills, causing crashes, spin-outs and hazardous driving conditions.

I-70 will remain closed to commercial vehicles between Eagle/Vail and Morrison until noon Friday, the agency announced just before 1 p.m. Thursday.

Interstate 25 over Monument Hill may be closed for safety concerns Thursday evening, according to CDOT.

Citing the current storm track, state officials issued a travel alert around 12:35 p.m., asking travelers to be prepared for highway closures and extended delays and to have food, water, blankets and other needed items in their vehicles.

Drivers can expect hazardous or impossible conditions in the mountains, foothills and Denver metro through Friday morning, according to state transportation officials . Road closures are likely on I-70, I-25 and U.S. 285.

A 33-year-old man was arrested after ignoring a road closure on U.S. 40 over Berthoud Pass, evading police and later crashing into a snow plow, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

The man evaded a Grand County sergeant who tried to pull him over after he failed stop at the road closure. The man later crashed into a snow plow that was attempting to shield other vehicles about 5 miles east of the Berthoud Pass summit, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man tried to flee on foot and was arrested on traffic charges and an unrelated arrest warrant.

Colorado road closures for Thursday, March 14

  • I-70 in both directions between Eagle and Morrison for commercial vehicles until noon Friday;

After lulling Coloradans into visions of an early spring, the month of March worked hard Thursday to live up to its reputation as the state's snowiest month, dumping a foot and more of snow in the foothills and across metro Denver.

Weather | Heavy, wet snow brings much of Denver, foothills to a standstill. Unless you had a shovel. Or a sled.

People who need shelter from this week’s heavy winter snowstorm can find a place to keep warm in the following locations, according to a map produced by the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Weather | Where people seeking shelter can warm up, sleep in metro Denver amid snowstorm

Nearly 82,000 people throughout metro Denver and the Front Range lost power on Thursday after a winter storm dumped heavy, wet snow across Colorado, causing hundreds of outages, Xcel Energy said.

As a major snowstorm buries the Front Range in snow, several school districts have announced closures or delays for Friday.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Road closures for Saturday's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and 5k in DC

by Samantha Carey

Rock 'n' Roll Marathon map. (Metropolitan Police Department)

WASHINGTON (7News) — The 2024 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and 5K will take place on Saturday, March 16.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) issued a traffic advisory for the race, which will cause road closures and parking restrictions in D.C.

When safe to do so, MPD will assist motorists crossing the race route to relieve traffic congestion, but they recommend plans for alternate routes and traveling around closures.

Storm carrying massive 'gorilla hail' hits parts of Kansas and Missouri

ST. LOUIS — Massive chunks of hail pelted parts of Kansas and Missouri on Wednesday night, bringing traffic to a standstill along Interstate 70, as storms unleashed possible tornadoes and meteorologists urged residents to stay indoors.

There were three unconfirmed reports of tornadoes in Wabaunsee and Shawnee counties with reports of damaged structures, but no reports of injuries or homes damaged, according to meteorologist Matt Wolters with the National Weather Service’s Topeka office. Survey teams plan to head out Thursday to evaluate the damage, he said.

There were reports of 4-inch (10-centimeter) hail, nearly softball-size, in the town of Wabaunsee and 3-inch (7.6-centimeter) hail in Geary County near Junction City and Fort Riley, Wolters said.

Descriptions of the hail ranged from the size of golf balls and apples, to softballs and baseballs.

Alex Sosnowski, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, previously said the predicted hail was deemed “gorilla hail” because it had the potential to be so big.

“Gorilla hail” is a term coined by Reed Timmer, a storm chaser who calls himself an extreme meteorologist, Sosnowski said. In this case, the term might fit: Some hail from north-central Kansas into north-central Missouri could be as big as a baseball.

“When you get up to tennis ball, baseball-sized or God forbid softball-sized, that can do a tremendous amount of damage, and if you get hit in the head, that could be fatal,” Sosnowski said.

Traffic came to a standstill for a time on part of Interstate 70 because of the falling hail, the National Weather Service said on X. Images of large hail chunks and at least one cracked windshield were shown on KSHB-TV .

Late Wednesday, forecasters issued tornado warnings in the areas around Topeka and to the north, while severe thunderstorm warnings were issued northeast of Kansas City in Missouri.

“If you are in this warning, get away from windows and shelter inside now!!!” the National Weather Service posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. The weather service said the storm had previously produced “softball-sized hail,” or 3.5-inch (8.9-centimeter) chunks.

The weather service also issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas through Thursday morning, after which forecasters said the storm will move to the east.

While the hail threat lessens Thursday, meteorologists said heavy rain and high winds were still possible from northeastern Texas through central Missouri.

The biggest threat on Friday is for torrential rain — perhaps up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in some spots — in a line from central Louisiana up through central Arkansas, Sosnowski said.

Other parts of the country also were seeing severe weather. A major snowstorm hit Colorado starting Wednesday night, closing numerous schools and government offices and shutting down sections of highways leading to the Denver area. That storm wasn’t expected to wind down until Friday.
